‘A beautiful moment’ as Luton and Bournemouth fans unite for Tom Lockyer

Adrian Durham has hailed the ‘beautiful moment’ that Luton and Bournemouth’s supporters united in support of Tom Lockyer.

It has been confirmed the Hatters’ captain suffered a cardiac arrest as he collapsed on the pitch 60 minutes into the Premier League encounter at the Vitality Stadium, leading to the game being suspended with the scores level at 1-1.

Rob Edwards, the Luton boss, then ran onto the pitch with the players ushered away as the 29-year-old received treatment on the pitch.

The teams made their way down the tunnel to the dressing room as Lockyer – who also collapsed during the Championship play-off final in May – was stretchered off the pitch, with the match ultimately being abandoned with the player’s welfare being the main priority.

Lockyer was reported to be ‘alert and responsive’ before being taken to a local hospital, with the player sitting up and talking to his wife in the tunnel area.

With the game called off, both Luton and Bournemouth‘s players emerged back out of the tunnel and took to the pitch to applaud the fans in attendance.

Hatters manager boss Edwards looked emotional as he expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those in attendance who chanted Lockyer’s name.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Durham said: “The Luton players are applauding fans all around the ground, the Bournemouth fans as well, and they’re getting that applause back.

“There’s a mutual appreciation and the Bournemouth players are now out for exactly the same and it’s a beautiful thing, actually.

“Tribal rivalry and all that, it’s just swept aside, because all we’re bothered about is that Tom Lockyer is okay.

“None of us really know Tom Lockyer but all we’re bothered about is that he’s okay and that’s the main thing.

“It was the right decision in the end [to suspend the game].”

Perry Groves added: “It’s a massive relief. This is about 11,000 human beings coming together and just being worried about the welfare and health of Tom Lockyer.

“You have to think about the Luton players as well because they’ve been through this before, so they’ll be unbelievably relieved.

“This has been an unbelievably emotional 20 minutes because for that space and time we didn’t know what was happening and Tom was stretchered off the pitch, but I could see that he was conscious, which was brilliant.

“I think that the right decision has been made, 100 per cent. There are things that are far, far, far more important than what football is and that’s what we’ve seen today.”

Edwards looked emotional as he gave a heartfelt thankyou to both the Luton and Bournemouth fans

    “Absolutely right,” added Durham.

“Rob Edwards has gone in close to the Bournemouth fans, making sure they sense his appreciation for their patience, their support, their understanding.

“It’s actually a beautiful moment what’s going on here at the Vitality, a truly beautiful moment.

“He’s a great man, a man of the people, a man of understanding and a man who appreciates humanity, and that’s clearly showing here as we walks around – it’s like he’s individually applauding every single fan.”

  • Manchester United boast unbeaten Bournemouth record as they close in on Man City

Manchester United boast unbeaten Bournemouth record as they close in on Man City

Manchester United will look to go level on points with rivals Man City when they host in-form Bournemouth this afternoon.

The Red Devils claimed a huge 2-1 victory over Chelsea in midweek to ease the growing pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

    4

United’s Champions League struggles followed by a dismal defeat to Newcastle had suggested the wheels were coming off at Old Trafford.

However, United answered many critics by sweeping aside Chelsea to move up to sixth meaning defeat to the Toon remains their only blemish in their last five Premier League matches.

The club now have the chance to go level on points with City, who face Luton Town on Sunday.

The remarkable turnaround would have been unthinkable before that five-game run, with United’s 3-0 defeat in the Manchester derby leaving them nine points adrift of their neighbours.

Man United v Bournemouth: Rashford revival

Marcus Rashford will be feeling the pressure as he desperately bids to kickstart his faltering season.

Rashford was omitted from Erik ten Hag’s starting XI for Wednesday night’s clash following his anonymous display during Man United‘s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Some boos were heard at Old Trafford as the 26-year-old was introduced late on against Chelsea with the Red Devils 2-1 up.

Rashford, who was criticised by Ten Hag earlier this season, is set to return to the starting line-up for the visit of Bournemouth and the Cherries fixture could be just what he needs.

Arsenal are the only current Premier League side Rashford has more top-flight goals against than the south-coast outfit.

The England star has scored in four of his last five league games against Bournemouth, including his last three at Old Trafford.

Rashford's performance in his last Premier League start left a lot to be desired

    4

Rashford’s performance in his last Premier League start left a lot to be desired
    • Only against Leicester City (8) and Arsenal (6) does Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford have more Premier League goals than he has against Bournemouth (5). Rashford has scored in four of his last five league games against the Cherries, including his last three at Old Trafford.
    • Bruno Fernandes created five chances for Manchester United in their 2-1 win over Chelsea, the 22nd different time he’s done so in a Premier League game since his debut in February 2020. In that time, only Kevin De Bruyne has achieved it more often in the Premier League (23 games).
    • Bournemouth’s Luis Sinisterra has been involved in four goals in his last five Premier League starts, scoring three goals for Leeds United in April and assisting Marco Senesi’s goal last time out for the Cherries away at Crystal Palace.

Man United v Bournemouth: Team news

Man United XI: Onana, Dalot, Maguire, Shaw, Reguilon, McTominay, Amrabat, Fernandes, Antony, Garnacho, Martial.

Subs: Bayindir, Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Varane, Pellistri, Rashford, van de Beek, Mainoo, Hojlund.

Bournemouth XI: Neto, Smith, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kerkez, Cook, Christie, Semenyo, Tavernier, Kluivert, Solanke.

Subs: Travers, Mepham, Brooks, Ouattara, Kilkenny, Rothwell, Billing, Sinisterra, Moore.

Bournemouth have three wins and one draw from their last four games

    4

    • Bournemouth have won their last two away Premier League games, beating Sheffield United and Crystal Palace. The Cherries have only won three in a row on the road once before, doing so in April this year; in between these two runs, they picked up just one point in seven away games (D1 L6).
    • Manchester United had 28 shots in their 2-1 win over Chelsea, only exceeding that total in one Premier League game in their last seven seasons, having 29 against Everton in April.
    • After winning just three points in their first nine Premier League games this season (D3 L6), Bournemouth have picked up 13 points in their last six games (W4 D1 L1), winning three of their last four games (D1).

Man United v Bournemouth: What has been said?

Scott McTominay was United’s hero against Chelsea as he scored twice to continue his fine form and secure a vital victory.

“He had a very important role. I admire the player,” Ten Hag said.

“He had an important role to pick them up, defend them, and press them but also, in possession, take benefit.

“He did several times and he came several times into good scoring positions.”

McTominay has provided unexpected firepower for Man United this season

    4

McTominay has provided unexpected firepower for Man United this season
    • Since the start of October, only Arsenal (19) have won more Premier League points than Manchester United (18), with the Red Devils winning six of their eight games in that time.
    • Bournemouth have won three of their last six Premier League games against sides that finished in the top four the previous season (L3), beating Liverpool in March, Tottenham in April and Newcastle in November. It’s as many wins as they’d managed in their previous 33 such games (D4 L26).
    • Bournemouth won their first Premier League game against Man Utd in December 2015, but have since picked up just four points in 11 games against the Red Devils (W1 D1 L9).
    • Manchester United have never lost a home game against Bournemouth in 10 previous meetings in all competitions at Old Trafford (W9 D1). They have only played more home games against Reading (12) without losing at home.

Man United v Bournemouth: How to follow

This Premier League clash will take place on Saturday, December 9.

Kick-off at Old Trafford is scheduled for 3pm.

Unfortunately, this fixture will not be televised on UK screens due to the 3pm blackout in English football.

However, highlights will be available on the Sky Sports website and app shortly after the end of the match and then later on Match of the Day.

Kieran Trippier is dragged away after confronting Newcastle fan following defeat

Kieran Trippier had to be dragged away by his teammates after confronting a Newcastle fan.

The exchange happened following the Magpies’ 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium where two goals from Dominic Solanke earned a crucial win for the Cherries.

    2

For Newcastle, it was a day to forget as defeat was compounded by an injury to Miguel Almiron on a day where they were forced to play without star men Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali who missed out through injury and suspension.

Having suffered back to back defeats this week following the loss to Dortmund in the Champions League, Newcastle are struggling for momentum and find themselves in seventh position in the Premier League.

With fans expecting a top four finish this term, tempers boiled over after the match with Trippier exchanging words with one supporter, a conversation that the defender explained post-match.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Trippier said: “The fans are emotional, of course they are.

“They have travelled a long way, they spend a lot of money to come and watch us. I was just having a chat with one of them, I said we are giving everything.

“There is no need to panic, we are still in a good position in the league, we are still in the Champions League, Carabao Cup quarter-finals, there is no need to panic.

“We got beat, we do apologise for that result, but the most important thing is that the lads are giving everything.

“We are giving more under the circumstances.”

  • Man United to offload Martial and Maguire, Gallagher set for new Chelsea deal

Man United to offload Martial and Maguire, Gallagher set for new Chelsea deal

Manchester United are ready to cut their losses on Anthony Martial when the transfer window reopens in January.

United are actively looking for ways to offload the injury-plagued French striker, whose only goal this season was in the EFL Cup victory at home to Crystal Palace.

    3

Martial scored against Palace but that could be his final goal for the clubCredit: Getty

Martial is one of United’s highest earners and his contract is due to expire at the end of the season, so the Red Devils are willing to accept a minimal fee.

He joined United from Monaco in 2015 in a deal worth up to £57m, a world record for a teenager at the time, but in nine seasons at Old Trafford has failed to justify that hefty price tag.

talkSPORT understands Martial had interest from the Saudi Pro-League in the summer.

    Harry Maguire to Milan?

Harry Maguire could be offered the chance to follow in the footsteps of Chris Smalling by relaunching his flagging club career in Italy.

Maguire rejected interest from West Ham to stay and fight for his Manchester united future.

But the England defender hinted in a Three Lions press conference last week that he would reconsider his position unless he can command a regular place in manager Erik ten Hag’s team.

West Ham would remain interested in signing Maguire but sources in Italy have suggested AC Milan are among a host of Serie A clubs monitoring the situation.

Smalling has enjoyed an amazing revival since moving to Roma from United in 2019.

    New contract for Conor Gallagher

Conor Gallagher is open to signing a new contract at Chelsea after becoming a key player under Mauricio Pochettino.

England international Gallagher’s future of Stamford Bridge was uncertain throughout the summer as clubs including Tottenham were eager to prise him away.

At one stage Chelsea were open to the idea of cashing in on their academy product after placing a £50m price tag on his head.

But Gallagher has been a mainstay of Pochettino’s midfield and has even donned the captain’s armband and the Blues are now expected to open talks over a new deal.

    Cherries chilled on winless start

Bournemouth are relaxed about the future of manager Andoni Iraola despite his winless start to life in the Premier League.

Spaniard Iraola is still waiting for his first victory since replacing Gary O’Neill in the summer.

But talkSPORT understands the Cherries were prepared for the prospect of struggling to pick up points early on after being handed a daunting fixture list.

Ironically, Iraola has the chance to get off the mark at the ninth time of asking when Bournemouth welcome O’Neil’s Wolves to the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth LIVE: Reds back home as Cherries remember humiliation

Liverpool welcome Bournemouth to Merseyside as Premier League football returns to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds kicked off their season with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea last weekend while Bournemouth shared the points with West Ham.

Jurgen Klopp’s side now return home and will be hoping to claim their first win of the season with memories of this fixture last campaign fresh in the memory.

The hosts humiliated the Cherries, winning 9-0 in a historic victory that saw Scott Parker sacked three days later.

Andoni Iraola will be hoping his side can get revenge for that defeat and that he won’t experience a similar fate to Parker this time around.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth: What has been said?

With Liverpool being turned down Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, the Reds are in a desperate situation in the transfer market and according to former star Carragher, their current predicament is ‘a joke’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: “It leaves Liverpool in a pretty difficult place.

“They need to sign someone in midfield and people know that they’re desperate. They put a bid in for Lavia today for £60million when they refused to pay £50million just four or five days ago.

    “It’s been an absolute mess – it’s a joke.

“The biggest problem is that Liverpool have known they need midfield reinforcements since August last year, so 12 months ago.”

    Liverpool vs Bournemouth: Match facts

    • New signing Dominik Szoboszlai created more chances (3) and made more off-the-ball runs into the box (6) than any other Liverpool player on his debut against Chelsea on MD1.
    • Patrick Kluivert scored for Newcastle away against Liverpool in December 2004. If his son Justin Kluivert scores for Bournemouth here, they would be the second father/son duo to score a Premier League goal against the Reds at Anfield after Ian Wright and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
    • Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has scored eight goals in eight Premier League appearances against Bournemouth, though he didn’t score in either meeting with the Cherries last season.
    • After a run of failing to score in six out of seven Premier League home games between January and March 2021, Liverpool have now only failed to score in one of their last 42 at Anfield – a goalless draw with Chelsea in January last season.
    • Bournemouth had the second lowest possession average (40%) and the lowest shots-per-game average (9.4) in the Premier League last season. On MD1 against West Ham, the Cherries had 14 shots while enjoying 63% possession.
    • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League games, the longest current run in the division (W7 D5). However, each of their last three matches have finished level, with the Reds last drawing four consecutive league games in January 2008.
    • Liverpool haven’t lost their first Premier League home game in any of the last 19 seasons, since a 2-1 loss against Chelsea in 2003-04. In fact, Liverpool haven’t lost any of their 19 home league games in August/September under Jürgen Klopp (W16 D3).
    • Bournemouth have kept just one clean sheet in their 12 Premier League meetings with Liverpool, conceding 36 goals in the process (3 per game). However, that one shutout was in a 1-0 victory in their most recent meeting with the Reds in March.
    • Bournemouth have never won away against Liverpool in any competition (D1 L8), with a 2-2 draw in April 2017 the only time they’ve avoided defeat at Anfield.
    • Liverpool have won five of their six home league games against Bournemouth (D1), including a 9-0 victory in this exact fixture last season.

Tottenham and Liverpool have spent big, despite Klopp claim – but Arsenal to gazump rivals

Premier League clubs have wasted no time in splashing the cash as they gear up for what promises to be another hectic campaign.

Usual suspects Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have already made their mark, but it is Tottenham that have spent the most so far.

    6

Spurs have forked out £121million on four new players as they look to give new boss Ange Postecoglou a squad capable of finishing back inside the top seven.

James Maddison was brought in from Leicester for £40m, while goalkeeper Guglielmo Viacario has been signed for £17m from Italian outfit Empoli.

Meanwhile the north Londoners have turned Pedro Porro [£34m] and Dejan Kulusevski’s [£30m] loan deals from Sporting Lisbon and Juventus into permanent stays.

Liverpool follow Tottenham having spent £95m on two players – Dominik Szoboszlai for £60m from RB Leipzig and Alexis Mac Allister for an initial £35m from Brighton.

Ex-Arsenal star Ramsey in shock talks over return to Cardiff on free transfer

That is despite boss Jurgen Klopp hinting that funds were tight earlier this year after the Reds missed out on Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid.

Chelsea, who finished 12th in the previous season, have made it their mission to sell players to raise funds for a huge spree later this month and in August.

But they have still spent £85m after bringing in Christopher Nkunku from RB Leizpig in a £53m deal, while splashing £32m on striker Nicolas Jackson from Villarreal.

Arsenal then sit in fourth spot having paid Chelsea an initial £60m for versatile German Kai Havertz.

Mikel Arteta’s side stand to be the Premier League’s top spenders this summer as they close in a club-record £105m signing of West Ham skipper Declan Rice.

And the Gunners are also expected to announce the £40m arrival of defender Jurrien Timber from Ajax in the near future.

Newcastle – back in the Champions League for the first time since 2003 – have forked out close to £60m on two players.

Midfielder Sandro Tonali has joined from AC Milan for £52m, while young winger Yankuba Minteh, who is now on loan at Feyenoord, was signed for a fee of around £5.8m from Odense Boldklub.

Brentford missed out on a European spot last season, but they are trying to build a squad capable of cracking into it having broken their club-record transfer fee twice.

The Bees recently announced the arrival of defender Nathan Collins from Wolves for £23m, while they turned Kevin Schade’s loan from Freiburg into a permanent deal for £22m.

And they have also brought in goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Freiburg for around £11m, with David Raya facing an uncertain future.

Brighton have also been active in the market as they prepare for Europa League football for the first time in their history.

Premier League clubs’ spending so far

    1. Tottenham – £121million
    2. Liverpool – £95million
    3. Chelsea – £85million
    4. Arsenal – £60million
    5. Newcastle – £57.8million
    6. Brentford – £56million
    7. Brighton – £46.3million
    8. Man City – £30million
    9. Bournemouth – £29.5million
    10. Burnley – £20million
    11. Nottingham Forest – £15million
    12. Wolves – £9.5million
    13. Luton – £3million

The Seagulls have signed Brazilian striker Joao Pedro from Watford for a club-record £30m, while also bringing in shot-stopper Bart Verbruggen for £16.3m from Anderlecht.

That is in addition to the free transfers of James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud.

Treble winners Manchester City have only made one signing so far – midfielder Mateo Kovacic in a £25m deal rising to £30m from Chelsea.

Though they will be right up there with Arsenal come September as they look to bring in defender Josko Gvardiol from Leizpig for £86m.

And Pep Guardiola remains determined to bolster his midfield following Ilkay Gundogan’s departure to Barcelona with the club seemingly missing out to Arsenal in the race to sign Rice.

Bournemouth, with new manager Andoni Iraola, have made two signings, bringin in Hamed Junior Traore and Justin Kluivert for £29.5m to bolster their attack.

Last season’s Championship winners Burnley have made a promising start to the window – spending £13m on Jordan Beyer after his impressive loan from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux has also joined on a free transfer, with the ex-Leyton Orient man to potentially play back-up to James Trafford after the Clarets had a £19m offer accepted by City for the England Under-21 international.

Vincent Kompany’s side have also paid West Brom £7m for the services of Irish defender Dara O’Shea.

As for Nottingham Forest, their only signing so far has been turning Chris Wood’s loan from Newcastle into a permanent £15m transfer.

It is the same story for Wolves, whose only deal this window is triggering Boubacar Traore’s £9.5m buyout clause after he joined on loan last year from Metz.

Premier League newbies Luton have signed centre-back Mads Andersen from Barnsley for an undisclosed fee, thought to be £3m, while also bringing in Chiedozie Ogbene after his Rotherham contract came to an end.

And as it stands, Manchester United, West Ham, Everton, Fulham, Sheffield United, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace are yet to spend any cash.

Though the Villans have signed Youri Tielemans on a free transfer, while they are also set to announce the signing of defender Pau Torres from Villarreal for £35m.

Casemiro has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo following his stunning acrobatic effort against Bournemouth.

The Manchester United star has proven himself as a key man for the club since joining from Real Madrid for a fee of £70million last summer.

With his all-action midfield displays making him a real fan-favourite at Old Trafford, the Brazilian has now added stunning goals to his list of attributes following a wonderful overhead kick against the Cherries.

With Christian Eriksen clipping the ball into the box, Casemiro oozed class as he acrobatically slammed home from close range to put United 1-0 up at the Vitality Stadium.

Speaking on talkSPORT 2 commentary, Nigel Adderley described the goal, saying: “Casemiro with an acrobatic volley and what a goal for Manchester United!

“Of all people, it’s Casemiro who comes up with the sort of finish made famous by Cristiano Ronaldo and United remain firmly on course for the Champions League.”

Former Arsenal star Perry Groves was on co-commentary duty and couldn’t hide his pleasure after seeing the quality of the goal.

He said: “What a finish from Casemiro. You think that’d be the other way around with Casemiro being a little bit deeper and Eriksen making the run into the box but Casemiro makes a blindside run from deep in the midfield.

“He got away from his marker and it’s a great little chipped ball from Eriksen.

“There’s no pressure on him whatsoever, he just takes a little touch off Senesi and as the ball goes into the air Casemiro acrobatically is there with his overhead kick.

“It’s fantastic athleticism and gives Neto no chance. What a finish!”

Premier League relegation run-in details as Leeds, Leicester and Everton do battle

The Premier League relegation battle has been one of the most exciting in years, with five teams locked in a desperate survival bid.

Demotion to the Championship is not only a terrible thing for fans and players to experience, but it can lead to job losses and huge cuts to playing and non-playing staff.

But three teams have to go, and with three points separating 16th to 19th, we are in for an incredible final three games of the season.

With Southampton all but down already, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds and Leicester are locked in as the four teams fighting for their lives during the run-in.

Here, talkSPORT.com looks at the 2022/23 relegation battle in detail…

    7

    Nottingham Forest – 16th

Nottingham Forest have endured a strange season back in the Premier League that started with a crazy summer.

Steve Cooper’s men saw a huge influx of players, leading to some disjointed performances, particularly away from home.

The World Cup break helped settle everything down, and they have been impressive at the City Ground but have the league’s worst away form.

After defeat to Leeds last month, things looked bleak for Forest but crucial wins over Brighton and Southampton have massively boosted their survival hopes.

However, their run-in looks tough with games against Chelsea and Arsenal followed by a trip to Crystal Palace.

One more win should be enough to secure safety but with teams below them in worse form, they may be able to survive with just a point or even no more at all.

    Predicted finish – 17th

Forest's win over Southampton could be enough to keep them up

    Nottingham Forest’s remaining fixtures

    Chelsea – A – May 13

    Arsenal – H – May 20

    Crystal Palace – A – May 28

    Everton – 17th

Everton looked doomed under Frank Lampard, but they acted quickly and decisively to replace the Chelsea legend with Sean Dyche.

Dyche worked wonders on a limited budget at Burnley and has won four games as Toffees boss, picking up a shock emphatic victory away at Brighton last time out.

The superb result may well be enough to secure safety by building some momentum heading into the final games.

Man City are their next opponent so that will likely end in defeat but the games against Wolves and Bournemouth are more important.

And any sort of performance like at the Amex is likely to lead to more points which will be enough to survive in the top flight.

    Leicester – 18th

From title winners to relegation candidates in seven years, it’s been a strange journey for Leicester and it looks set to end badly.

Brendan Rodgers was replaced by Dean Smith, and despite having a squad packed with quality players, including James Maddison, poor defending has seen them lose 21 times this season.

And with three games to go, the Foxes are staring relegation in the face with three tough fixtures remaining to survive.

A draw at home to Everton preceded a heavy defeat to Fulham last time out which has sunk morale at the club to an all-time low.

Liverpool are the Foxes’ next opponent before they face a trip to Newcastle, with hopes in those fixtures looking bleak.

Smith’s side are two points from safety so will need to find results from somewhere to stay up, and as it stands, chances of that are slim.

    Liverpool – H – May 13

    West Ham – H – May 28

    Leeds – 19th

Leeds are embroiled in a relegation battle for the second consecutive campaign.

The west Yorkshire side survived on the final day of the season last year after a win over Brentford that relegated Burnley.

But Jesse Marsch wasn’t able to build on that and was sacked earlier this year, and ex-Watford manager Javi Gracia was given the chance to save the club.

The Spaniard made a good start, but after a terrible run of results, relegation specialist Sam Allardyce was called upon to replace Gracia.

Allardyce’s side were beaten by Man City in his opening game in charge but they will take some positive out of the 2-1 defeat.

Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham are their final fixtures of the season and they are two points inside the relegation zone, so demotion to the Championship is a real possibility unless Big Sam can pull off the great escape.

    Southampton – 20th

Southampton have been bottom of the Premier League since New Year’s Eve and are onto their third manager of the season in Ruben Selles.

Ralph Hasenhuttl and Nathan Jones failed to get much from this group of players and Selles seems to have had the same issue.

The Saints are eight points from safety with only three games to go, with relegation all but confirmed already.

They are likely to have their relegation finalised this weekend unless they can pick up their first win since March.

If they do win that game, they will give themselves a small dose of hope but in reality, their fate is already decided.

  • The expiry date of every Premier League manager’s contract with six deals almost up…

The expiry date of every Premier League manager’s contract with six deals almost up…

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery had negotiated the longest deal in the Premier League until Brentford gave Thomas Frank new terms. Six managers are currently only contracted until the summer.

Here’s every top-flight manager and the expiry date of their current deals…

    Arsenal: Mikel Arteta – 2025
A year ago, Arteta extended his deal to the end of 2024/25, keeping him under contract for two more years. After the progress he’s made this season, they will be talking again very soon over an extension and a pay-rise.

Aston Villa: Unai Emery – 2027
Emery signed the longest deal ever given to a Villa manger when last November he inked a contract at least four and a half years in length, according to The Telegraph‘s John Percy. It looks an astute move.

    Bournemouth: Gary O’Neil – 2024
O’Neil stepped up from a caretaker role to sign a one-and-a-half-year contract last November, though the Cherries have the option to extend those terms for a further 12 months. They surely will if he maintains his side’s current progress.

Brighton: Roberto De Zerbi – 2026
The Italian is tied down for another three years after signing a contract that Brighton have denied contains a release clause. It was claimed that De Zerbi could be bought out of his deal for £11.5million but Paul Barber says the Seagulls don’t use such clauses in staff contracts.

    Brentford: Thomas Frank – 2027
After a fine start to life in the Premier League, in January 2022, the Bees gave Frank and assistant Brian Riemer contract extensions until 2025. Then, last Christmas, they gifted the Dane a two-year extension and improved terms.

Chelsea: Frank Lampard – end of the season
Just five games to go for Lampard. Five too many, while Mauricio Pochettino sits idly as Chelsea stumble from one shambles to another.

Crystal Palace: Roy Hodgson – end of the season
Hodgson remains in caretaker charge until the summer when Palace will try again to replace him. This time, there is talk of a role upstairs for the 75-year-old. Presumably in a nice, cosy chair.

    Everton: Sean Dyche – 2025
Dyche signed for two and a half years when he put pen to paper back in January on a contract that reportedly contained a clause that stipulates he won’t be sacked if Everton go down, or the Toffees will have to pay up the two years in his deal. So it could cost them £10million if they are relegated and see fit to make another change.

    Fulham: Marco Silva – 2024
The Fulham boss only has a year remaining on his current deal and talks have reportedly stalled over a renewal as the vultures circle around the Craven Cottage dugout.

Leeds United: Sam Allardyce – end of the season
Jesse Marsch’s deal still has two years left to run; Javi Gracia’s just under two months. So it’s possible Leeds are currently paying three managers, with the latest refusing to rule out staying beyond the end of the original four-game arrangement.

Leicester: Dean Smith – end of the season
It took Leicester a while to sack Rodgers owing to the size of his pay-out, but his replacement is only in place until the summer, when the Foxes will look again for a manager depending on what division they are playing in next season.

    Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp – 2026
It was widely thought Klopp would walk away from Liverpool in 2024 when his contract was due to expire before he signed an extension to summer 2026. “When the owners brought the possibility to renew to me, I asked myself the question I’ve mused over publicly. Do I have the energy and vibe to give of myself again what this amazing place requires from the person in the manager’s office? I didn’t need too long to answer in truth. The answer was very simple… I’m in love with here and I feel fine!”

Manchester City: Pep Guardiola – 2025
Pep’s deal was due to expire this summer but City used the World Cup break in the winter to tie the manager down for another two years beyond the end of the current season. He is the second-longest serving Premier League manager behind Klopp.

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag – 2025
United have the option to extend Ten Hag’s deal for a further 12 months but it seems likely that new terms will be agreed since the Dutchman’s current salary, agreed when he moved from Ajax a year ago, is considerably smaller than the likes of Klopp and Guardiola, as well as what Spurs were paying Antonio Conte.

    Newcastle: Eddie Howe – long-term beyond 2024
Wor Eddie was given a two-and-a-half-year contract until 2024 when he was appointed in November 2021. Those terms were renegotiated last summer but neither the club nor Howe have been willing to elaborate on the length. “It’s a ‘long-term’ deal –  that was the wording, I think,” said Howe when asked directly.

Nottingham Forest: Steve Cooper – 2025
Just when it was thought Cooper might be axed, Forest instead gave him a new contract. Even that deal, awarded in October with Forest bottom of the Premier League table, hasn’t stopped speculation circling as recently as last month about his job security.

Southampton: Ruben Selles – end of the season
Selles took over until the end of the season when Nathan Jones was axed just 94 days into a three-and-half-year deal until 2026, which Saints have had to pay up.

Tottenham: Ryan Mason – end of the season
Spurs’ second attempt at appointing a temp to replace Antonio Conte will be in charge until the summer, when he’ll most likely return to his assistant role once more. Until Daniel Levy needs him to step up again.

West Ham: David Moyes – 2024
The Hammers gave Moyes some long-term security in 2021 when he penned terms for three years. The fact he’s reportedly on £5million a year perhaps saved his skin when he was facing the axe earlier in the season.

    Wolves: Julen Lopetegui – 2025
The Spaniard confirmed he signed a three-year deal when he took over last November which, since it was agreed mid-season, has been interpreted to be until 2025.
