‘Stop crying your heart out’: City on brink as Real pull off epic comeback in spicy CL clash

One of the best rivalries in modern football produced another classic, or you might even say “clásico”, as a 92nd minute Jude Bellingham winner handed Real Madrid a 3-2 win in the first leg of their Champions League knockout playoff against Manchester City.

The Etihad Stadium was left stunned as English star Bellingham tapped into an empty net to steal victory for the Spanish giants.

Vinicius Junior set up the decisive goal with the Brazilian stealing a pass from Mateo Kovacic that was intended for Rico Lewis, drawing City goalkeeper Ederson out and lobbing him, but the ball was sailing wide before Bellingham got their in time to finish off his teammate’s brilliant work.

It was the first time Real have claimed victory in regular time away at Manchester City – they won on penalties after the second leg of last year’s quarter-final – and they are well-placed to eliminate Pep Guardiola’s side, and book their own place in the Round of 16, in the second leg at the Bernabeu next week.

City led twice, through superstar Erling Haaland on both occasions, and the home crowd were jubilant when his 80th minute goal from a penalty, won by Phil Foden who was brought down just inside the box by a clumsy Dani Ceballos challenge, made it appear as if they may head to Madrid with a lead.

But one of their own academy products that came back to haunt them.

Brahim Diaz, who left City for Real Madrid back in 2019, and had a four-year loan spell at AC Milan, came off the bench to score an 86th minute equaliser.

Diaz pounced on a ball that spilled off Ederson’s chest after a Vinicius Jr. strike, and the 25-year-old slotted it into the far corner, and in a classy touch opted not to celebrate.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said pre-match that his side’s clashes with the Premier League giants “seems like it’s a clásico” due to the quality and frequency of their meetings, like the La Liga leader’s rivalry with Barcelona.

It is only the fourth time that two teams have met in the Champions League in four successive seasons – after Deportivo v Juventus (2000-04), Liverpool v Chelsea (five in a row from 2004-09) and Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid (2013-17) – but this battle was arguably Real and City’s spiciest.

It was their first meeting since Real’s infamous Ballon d’Or boycott last October, and the home fans were eager to remind them of it.

A massive banner with a picture of City’s Spanish maestro Rodri kissing the trophy accompanied by the words ‘stop crying your heart out’, in reference to the song by big City fans Oasis, was unveiled in the terraces before kick off.

Rodri, who is sidelined with an ACL injury, was even spotted capturing a photo of the banner on his phone, while Real’s sensational forward Vinicius Jr., who they believe was the deserved winner, was met with boos and jeers every time he was involved in play.

The noise did not seem to bother the Brazilian however as he was superb all night, but went without the reward of getting on the score sheet despite his impressive creativity.

He released Kylian Mbappe in the 11th minute but Edersen pulled off an excellent save.

One minute later he again almost had an assist but Nathan Ake cleared Ferland Mendy’s shot off the line, and shortly after he may have been awarded a penalty if not for the offside flag being raised, and later in the half a deflected shot of his hit the crossbar.

Real’s electricity in the front half made them look the more threatening of the two sides early, but it was City who scored first through who else but Haaland in the 19th minute.

Jack Grealish, who was subbed off after a half an hour with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, lobbed an excellent ball into the box to Josko Gvardiol who chested it down to Haaland and the Norwegian goal scoring machine calmly put the ball over Thibaut Courtois with his left foot.

There was a lengthy VAR check for offside, but the video referee eventually awarded Haaland his first goal against Real Madrid, in his fifth attempt.

Completing a brace later also added further to his remarkable Champions League record with 49 goals from 48 matches.

City took a 1-0 lead into the break but there easily could have been more goals as a Manuel Akanji header from a Kevin De Bruyne corner hit the bar, and Mbappe squandered a late chance by launching a shot over the bar.

The French superstar made up for it in the 60th minute, however, as a complete miskick sailed into the back of the net to equalise.

Federico Valverde blasted a free kick into the City defensive wall, but the ball rebounded to Dani Ceballos who put a superb dink pass over the top to Mbappe inside the box and his acrobatic volley came off his shin, but a wrongfooted Ederson could only watch as it slowly looped into the far corner.

The second half momentum was mainly with the visitors as Bellingham also had a couple of near misses, and having had almost double the amount of shots, 20 to 11, they could not help but feel like they should be returning home with a lead.

But they were eventually rewarded for their persistence with Diaz and Bellingham’s late goals.

    – Clinical PSG, Juve and Dortmund lead –

PSG put one foot in the Round of 16 with a dominant 3-0 victory away at fellow Ligue 1 side Brest.

The hosts were always up against it with the Parisian giants boasting a 31 game unbeaten run against them, Brest’s last victory came in a league match in 1985, and the visitors put the foot down from the start.

Vitinha converted a penalty in the 21st minute to open the scoring before Ousmane Dembele continued his stunning recent form with a brace either side of half time.

The Frenchman has now scored 18 goals in his last 11 games in all competitions for PSG, making him the most prolific goal scorer in Europe’s big five competitions since the start of December.

The second leg will be held at Paris’ Parc de Princes next week.

Elsewhere, a 82nd minute Samuel Mbangula winner handed Juventus a 2-1 win in Turin against Dutch outfit PSV.

Weston McKennie opened the scoring for the Italian giants, but Ivan Perisic levelled shortly after half time.

Borussia Dortmund had a comfortable win away in Portugal against Sporting CP with a 3-0 victory courtesy of goals to Serhou Guirassy, Pascal Grob and Karim Adeyemi.

‘New Alex Ferguson’ arrives with shock City rout; rockstar’s surprise commentary gig — CL Wrap

Oasis star Noel Gallagher made a bizarre commentary appearance as his beloved Manchester City went down 4-1 to Sporting CP in Ruben Amorim’s farewell match ahead of taking over at Old Trafford.

The new Manchester United manager immediately endeared himself to his new fans as his Portuguese side inflicted a third defeat in the space of a week on City to maintain their standing in second position on the Champions League table with ten points from four games.

Amorim said pre-game that Red Devils fans might believe that “the new Alex Ferguson has arrived” if his team beat City, and he has poured fuel on the fire that is the Manchester derby.

LISBON, PORTUGAL – NOVEMBER 05: Ruben Amorim, Head Coach of Sporting CP, is thrown into the air by his players to celebrate his last home match as manager at the end of the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD4 match between Sporting Clube de Portugal and Manchester City at Estadio Jose Alvalade on November 05, 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal. Pep Guardiola will get his chance for revenge on Amorim in the 39-year-old’s first Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on December 15, but he has glaring issues to fix first.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for City in the fourth minute and it appeared they were back on track after a shock Premier League loss to Bournemouth at the weekend after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham mid-week.

Lifelong City fan Gallagher was even crowing about how easy things were on the pitch for his side, but almost as soon as the words came out of mouth, Sporting front man Viktor Gyökeres fired home their first goal in the 38th minute.

From then on despite City dominating possession (73%) and having more than double the amount of shots (20-9), Sporting had all the momentum on the counter and they rolled with it.

No more than 30 seconds into the second half they grabbed the lead courtesy of a great through ball picking out Maximiliano Araujo who was in on goal and smashed it home.

Former Brighton striker Gyökeres piled on the pain by slotting two second half penalties to ensure he took home the match ball.

At the other end, Erling Haaland had a chance to keep the game alive when City were 3-1 down but he blasted his penalty straight into the bar.

City’s injury issues still persist in defence and it was the first time they had conceded four goals in a Champions League match since Barcelona put four past them in 2016.

It was a painful return to Portugal for Lisbon-born Silva, who conceded City are mired in a damaging slump.

“It’s disappointing because we’re a bit in a dark place right now. Everything looks to be going in the wrong way,” he said.

“Even when we are playing well we don’t score our chances and we concede too easily.

“We need to get better very quickly otherwise it will be very difficult to come back from these losses.

“It’s difficult to find reasons for what is happening to us. It just looks like this team is going the wrong way now.

“Our injured players need to come back because we need them and it’s just not good enough tonight.”

Ruthless Liverpool spoil Alonso’s return to Anfield

Xabi Alonso endured a miserable return to Anfield as Liverpool thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 on Tuesday, thanks to a Luis Diaz hat-trick, to go top of the Champions League table.

Cody Gakpo was also on target as the Reds maintained their 100 per cent record in Europe after four games.

Alonso, a Champions League winner during his playing days in the Liverpool midfield, turned his back on succeeding Jurgen Klopp to remain at Leverkusen after leading them to an unbeaten German league and cup double last season.

Liverpool, though, are not left wondering what might have been as Arne Slot continued his stunning start as manager with a 14th win in 16 games in all competitions.

Leverkusen remain on seven points from their opening four Champions League matches after another sobering night for their ambitions to match the heights they hit last season.

Alonso’s men sit fourth in the Bundesliga, seven points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich, and failed to master what Alonso described pre-match as a “beautiful challenge”.

Absurd scenes as Fulham pull off heist | 01:02

The Spaniard cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as his side struggled to get into the slick passing rhythm they have become famed for during his tenure.

The German champions, though, created the best of what chances there were in a first half short on goalmouth action.

Jeremie Frimpong saw appeals for a penalty waved away when he went down with a clear sight of goal under a challenge from Kostas Tsimikas.

Frimpong also had the ball in the net just before the break but handled before racing through to finish.

Liverpool’s best opening of the half came seconds later when Curtis Jones’ excellent pass finally found some space for Gakpo, but his powerful effort was repelled at his near post by Lukas Hradecky.

Just like in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Brighton that took Slot’s men to the top of the Premier League, it took until the second half for both Liverpool and the Anfield crowd to come to life.

Mohamed Salah should have done better when he sliced wide after a jinking run through the Leverkusen midfield by Ryan Gravenberch.

A cagey tactical battle was sparked into life on the hour mark by a moment of stunning quality.

”Ange Postecoglou blew my mind” | 01:18

Jones spun his marker before splitting the Leverkusen defence with a pinpoint pass for Diaz, who nonchalantly chipped the advancing Hradecky.

Moments later, Liverpool had killed the visitors off with another flowing move. Salah’s driven cross was headed in at the back post by the flying Gakpo. The linesman raised his flag to momentarily silence the celebrations, but a VAR review showed the Dutch forward was onside for his sixth goal of the season.

Victor Boniface headed wide with a huge chance to bring Leverkusen immediately back into the game.

Instead, Liverpool pulled further clear seven minutes from time when Diaz controlled Salah’s looping cross and fired home.

The Colombian then rounded off the scoring with his ninth of the season in stoppage time with another clinical finish after Darwin Nunez’s blocked shot fell into his path.

Liverpool’s return of 12 points means they are almost certainly already assured of a place in the knockout phase, but are closing in on sealing direct progression to the last 16 via a top-eight finish in the 36-team league.

AC Milan topple Champions League holders Real Madrid

Champions League holders Real Madrid fell to a 3-1 home defeat by AC Milan on Tuesday in the group stage with striker Kylian Mbappe unable to find the net again.

The 25-year-old France captain has scored once in his last six matches for Madrid across all competitions, including three losses for Los Blancos.

Malick Thiaw headed the Italian side ahead before Vinicius Junior levelled from the penalty spot for the hosts.

Alvaro Morata struck against his former side to restore Milan’s lead before the break and Tijjani Reijnders netted the third to secure Milan’s victory.

Madrid were unable to bounce back strongly from the 4-0 thrashing by Barcelona in late October, their last outing after Saturday’s La Liga match at Valencia was postponed because of devastating floods in the east of Spain.

‘Goal of the season’ secures Victory win | 00:57

Players from both sides wore t-shirts before the match reading “We are all Valencia” while in one stand a giant Valencia regional flag was unfurled for a minute’s silence.

Carlo Ancelotti, who won the Champions League twice as a player and then twice as a coach with Milan, only made one change from the Clasico humiliation, bringing in Luka Modric for Eduardo Camavinga.

Madrid may have been keen to set things right in front of their fans at the Santiago Bernabeu but fell behind in the 12th minute.

Thiaw’s near-post header from a corner flew past the helpless Andriy Lunin to earn the Serie A side the lead.

Mike Maignan saved from Mbappe at the other end as Madrid hit back, with Vinicius winning a penalty as he fell under a clumsy tackle from Emerson Royal.

The Brazilian, who finished as runner-up in last week’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris when he had been favourite to win, coolly dispatched it with a cheeky dinked Panenka effort.

Melbourne City snatch win from Glory | 00:53

Milan regained the lead in the 39th minute through former Madrid striker Morata, who reacted quickly to fire home after Lunin saved from Rafael Leao.

Mbappe, yet to find top form in a Madrid shirt since his move from Paris Saint-Germain and particularly frustrated in the Barcelona defeat, broke in again before half-time but Maignan saved his low effort.

Ancelotti took action at half-time, bringing on Camavinga and Brahim Diaz, and it opened up the second half for an end-to-end affair.

Lunin made a superb flying save from Leao’s header and the Portuguese forward wasted a couple of opportunities on the break.

Leao made amends by teeing up Reijnders at the end of a superb solo run to turn home for Milan’s third after 73 minutes.

Antonio Rudiger smashed home for Madrid after a poor Maignan punch but the goal was disallowed for a tight off-side against the defender.

Maignan made a fine late save to deny Diaz and it killed any Madrid hopes of a comeback, like in their previous Champions League outing against Borussia Dortmund.

Madrid have now lost two of their four matches and are in the middle of the table, provisionally 17th, one place above Milan.

Security ‘considerably reinforced’ as Champions League hit by terrorism threat

It is one of the most anticipated sports events in the world but the UEFA Champions League has been hit by a dark threat as the competition’s quarter finals began overnight.

Security was reinforced at matches on Tuesday and Wednesday after a communication outlet supporting the Islamic State group published threats against stadiums.

The outlet showed images of the host stadiums in Paris, Madrid and London and urged terrorists “recreate the glory of the 2015 Paris attacks” which killed 138 people.

European football’s governing body UEFA said all four games would go ahead despite the jihadist threat.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said security would be “considerably reinforced” when Paris Saint-Germain take on Barcelona in the first leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Darmanin said there had been “a clear threat publicly expressed by the Islamic State”.

“The police, whom I spoke to very early this morning, have considerably reinforced the security measures,” the minister told reporters.

PSG coach Luis Enrique said in his pre-match news conference: “I hope it is a thing we can control and that they are just threats and that nothing will happen.”

A French source close to the issue told AFP: “IS has threatened the Champions League quarter-finals, not specifically in France, through one of its communication outlets.”

Two games are taking place this week in Madrid — Real Madrid hosted Manchester City on Tuesday, while Atletico Madrid face Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Pilar Alegria, speaking for the Spanish government, said more than 2,000 police would be deployed “to guarantee total security”.

“We are going to have an exceptional deployment of security services, in line with the level of alert set out by the intelligence services,” Francisco Martin Aguirre, the government’s delegate for Madrid, said in a video message.

    Police aware of plans

In London, where Arsenal took on Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police said it was aware of the calls to target matches.

“However, I want to reassure the public that we have a robust policing plan in place for tonight’s match and we continue to work closely alongside the club’s security team to ensure that the match passes peacefully,” Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said.

UEFA said all the matches would be played.

“UEFA is aware of alleged terrorist threats made towards this week’s UEFA Champions League matches and is closely liaising with the authorities at the respective venues,” the statement said.

“All matches are planned to go ahead as scheduled with appropriate security arrangements in place.” The pro-IS channel that published the calls for violent attacks featured images of the Emirates Stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu and Metropolitano stadiums in Madrid, as well as the Parc des Princes in Paris.

A French expert on the online communication of jihadist groups told AFP they came from Al-Azaim, the mouthpiece for Islamic State’s branch in Afghanistan (ISKP), which is suspected of being behind an attack on a concert venue in Moscow last month which killed more than 140 people.

However the expert, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said the posts were aimed at inciting others, rather than detailing a specific attack.

Many European countries are on their highest possible terror warning level after the attack in Moscow.

Real Madrid and Champions League holders Manchester City shared a pulsating 3-3 draw in a rollercoaster quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

Bernardo Silva put City ahead with a low free-kick but Ruben Dias’ own goal and Rodrygo Goes helped Madrid dramatically and swiftly fight back.

Manchester City’s own quick-fire double in the second half through Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol stunned the record 14-time winners, but they snatched a draw through Fede Valverde’s scorching volley.

Meanwhile, Arsenal rescued a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich as Leandro Trossard’s late leveller stopped Harry Kane making a triumphant return to north London in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Trossard came off the bench to equalise in the closing stages at the Emirates Stadium after former Tottenham striker Kane put Bayern 2-1 ahead with a first-half penalty.

Arsenal had taken an early lead through Bukayo Saka before former Gunners winger Serge Gnabry put Bayern back on level terms.

Kane scored a north London derby record 14 goals against Arsenal during his time with Tottenham, making him an inevitable target for taunts for Gunners fans.

When Kane bagged his sixth career goal at the Emirates — and his 39th in all competitions in his first season with Bayern — it seemed the England captain would have the last laugh.

But Trossard’s dramatic intervention leaves the tie delicately poised ahead of the second leg in Munich on April 17.

Former goalkeeper Mark Bosnich hospitalised following heart scare

Popular Australian football great Mark Bosnich had a health scare this week that left him in hospital.

The 52-year-old made the quick decision to get himself checked out and was admitted to hospital in Sydney.

Bosnich was missing from Stan Sport’s Champions League coverage on Thursday and his on-air colleagues Max Rushden and Craig Foster explained what had happened.

“For those of you who don’t know, he (Bosnich) had chest pains, he’s had a stent put in,” Rushden said during coverage of the match between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Sociedad.

“He was making a lot of noise … and he said ‘I’m going to get it checked out’.

“He did, he’s OK. He’s back tomorrow but we are sending you our love Boz, it is very quiet without you.”

Fellow Socceroo Foster added: “We miss you buddy. I hope you’re well and feeling OK.”

In an excellent development, Bosnich posted a photo on X from his hospital bed late on Wednesday night with a grin and a thumbs up.

Clearly a company man, the larrikin former keeper posted a message along with the time and a load of information of the matches to come on the streaming platform.

“Will not be able to see you all tomorrow morning,” he wrote.

“But will be fine by Friday … but join us here in Oz from 6.35am (aedt).”

Bosnich received a huge number of well wishes after his post and then took to X again on Thursday morning for another post, this time showing himself tuning into the Champions League action on a tablet.

Rushed was keen for any men watching to heed the warning from the man known as “Bozza”.

“If you’re not sure about anything, health-wise, get checked,” Rushden said.

“Men are useless at talking about it and doing anything about it.

“The sooner you find anything is wrong, the better it is. That is our message and that is Bozza’s message too.”

Newcastle United willing to pay £50m to sign Real Madrid midfielder in January: Reports

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to snap up Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz when the transfer window reopens in January.

Diaz, 24, has made 17 appearances across competitions this season, starting eight, contributing four goals and two assists. The arrival of Jude Bellingham from Real Madrid in the summer has affected Diaz’s game time at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spaniard is contracted with Los Blancos till 2027, but his reduced game time has attracted the interest of Newcastle. As per Chronicle Live (via Madrid Universal), the Magpies are prepared to dish out £50 million to sign Diaz.

However, the Premier League club are not alone in the fray for the winger’s services, as they have Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan, West Ham United and Aston Villa in the competition.

Diaz has made the most of Vincius Jr.’s injury-enforced absence in the last two months, making four goal contributions in his last appearances across competitions. However, once the Brazilian returns to the starting XI, Diaz is likely to be relegated to the bench.

It remains to be seen if the former Manchester City winger fancies a move back to England in search of regular football.

    Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti

Real Madrid have had a fabulous start to the season despite injuries to several first-team players.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defenders Eder Militao and David Alaba are seemingly out for the season after injuring their ACL. Nevertheless, Carlo Ancelotti’s side have fared well across competitions heading into the new year.

After 18 games, Los Blancos lead the La Liga standings with 45 points, ahead of second-placed Girona on goal difference, with defending champions Barcelona seven points adrift in fourth.

In the UEFA Champions League, Ancelotti and Co. enjoyed a flawless group-stage campaign, winning all six games for the third time in the European competition. They play Bundesliga side RB Leipzig away in the Round of 16 first leg on February 13 before the return leg on March 6.

Los Blancos return to action after the ongoing Christmas break with a league clash at home to Real Mallorca on January 3 before travelling to Arandina for their Copa del Rey opener three days later.
