Arsenal’s right didn’t look right without the talismanic Bukayo Saka.
Gabriel Martinelli switched flanks but never convinced as Saka’s understudy in this 1-0 success over Ipswich Town at the Emirates.

Martin Odegaard was less influential without Saka’s clever movement and immense work ethic outside him. Arsenal’s attacking right-back, Jurrien Timber, played well but there was none of that instinctive understanding with Saka, none of those quick wall passes with Mr Right Side.
The expected victory was delivered but not in any resounding fashion that will alarm the Premier League leaders, Liverpool, who are six points clear with a game in hand.
Without Saka, Arsenal are less potent at set-pieces as well as in transition.
His 52 goals and 45 assists in 186 Premier League appearances highlight his contribution. Arsenal fans will also attest to his work ethic and selflessness.
This could be a domestic season shaped by Rodri’s ACL and Saka’s hamstring as well as Arne Slot’s decisive sharpening of Liverpool.
Saka is expected to be out for two months. Contrary to many thoughts he has been rested and rotated more often by Mikel Arteta this season but Arsenal’s heavy reliance on him means a heavy workload during games, inevitably putting his sinews at risk.
If Arsenal made heavy weather of dispatching promoted Ipswich without him, they face far greater challenges in forthcoming weeks, including Newcastle United, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Blessed with a far stronger bench, Liverpool can cope with absentees, even Mohamed Salah.
If Slot was deprived the elite services of his celebrated right winger, he has options in the form of Harvey Elliott or Federico Chiesa able to step up from the bench. Neither is close to Salah’s level but at least Slot doesn’t have to alter other parts of his attack.
Arteta moved Martinelli from left to right, and the Brazilian was soon running at Leif Davis. Indeed, from the kick-off, Martinelli grappled with Davis as they ran down the wing. Davis, socks rolled down, accepted the challenge and did well against Martinelli.

But the news that Saka could be out until March could cost Arsenal in the title raceCredit: Getty
Saka is such a persistent threat, able to go right and left, willing to take the knocks, and would have troubled Davis more.
Martinelli tried to replicate Saka’s movement, drifting inside and indicating Timber to stay right briefly.
Then Gabriel Jesus briefly went right, and Martinelli inside. But it all lacked the kaleidoscopic movement of the triangle involving Saka, Odegaard and Timber (or Ben White).
Another weapon missing in Arsenal’s armoury was Saka’s strength in the air. He has a good spring, and a determination to fight for crosses not always properly appreciated.
Martinelli failed to impose himself aerially on Davis, who climbed above Arsenal’s No.11 to clear a Leandro Trossard cross after 20 minutes.
Arsenal did break through the massed ranks of Ipswich’s defence three minutes later, and Martinelli did play an early role in the move.

His cross was headed out by Luke Woolfenden but only to Trossard on the left. Ipswich’s defenders were fractionally too slow in their reactions, and a fraction is all it takes to be punished at Premier League.
As Trossard collected the ball, Ben Johnson should have guarded more against the run to the dead-ball line, knowing that Dara O’Shea was tucked inside, covering the cutback. Johnson was caught out as Trossard accelerated and drove towards the line. Now it was Jacob Greaves getting caught out.
The left sided of Kieran McKenna’s three centre-backs was marking space, not checking on Kai Havertz’s arrival. Davis also failed to push inside. Havertz darted in ahead of the pair to score from close range.
Havertz’s 12th goal of the season drew a roar of joy, and plenty of singing from Arsenal fans.
But it continued a theme of Havertz scoring against the less taxing opponents, also including Crystal Palace, West Ham, Southampton, Leicester, and Wolves, as well as Bolton and Preston in the Carabao Cup.
Arsenal need Havertz to score more consistently against the bigger sides.
Simon Jordan & Martin Keown CLASH over Mikel Arteta’s progress at Arsenal
The lead secured, Arsenal should have kicked on again. Saka would have led the hunt for a second but he was beginning his rehab. His understudy, Martinelli, kept looking for the ball but didn’t receive the ball enough.
He would wait until Declan Rice received possession and then move, targeting space between Davis and Greaves and also between Greaves and Woolfenden. He threw up his hands in half-frustration when Rice delayed his delivery at one point.
Arsenal’s attack was even less threatening after the break.
Odegaard’s free-kick failed to clear the wall. But the Norwegian’s ability to manipulate a dead-ball did almost bring reward. Saka curls in a beautiful corner from the right.
Here, taking corner duties for that side, Odegaard did deliver a gem towards the edge of the area. Gabriel was again engaged in a rugged rumba with Liam Delap but this was a ploy by Arsenal, another from Nicolas Jover’s box of tricks.
As Arsenal’s set-piece guru watched on, Gabriel manoeuvred Delap out of the way, Rice caught Odegaard’s ball on the volley and only O’Shea’s block saved Ipswich conceding a second.
6
Arsenal move up to second in the Premier League table but are six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have played a game less too
But Arsenal ran out of ideas and energy, inviting Ipswich to believe they could equalise.
Odegaard even stooped to some time-wasting, going down holding his face after taking a tap on the chest from Jack Clarke. Ipswich were breaking upfield, and Darren England, mindful of head injuries, stopped the attack, much to the visitors’ frustration.
Odegaard did eat up some time as Arsenal held out. If there was any celebration afterwards, it would have been a toast to Havertz’s goal – and to an absent friend.
“They had come through the academy, were quite close to our age as well, and we got to go to a lot of games at Emirates Stadium so we got to see them play a lot.
“Obviously Jack at the time was really, really flying – he was a joy to watch. We all loved watching him, and we saw a lot of ourselves in him too because he had come through the way we wanted to. The same for Alex and the same for Chuba.”
The trio all played for England youth level during their time at Arsenal, with Saka also sharing Nigerian heritage with Iwobi, who opted to represent the Super Eagles in 2015, and Ajax’s Akpom.
Saka has lifted the FA Cup with Arsenal like Wilshere and Iwobi yet it was the one who never won any silverware at the club that made the biggest impression.
Akpom joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of six and was handed his Premier League debut against Sunderland at 17.

However, Akpom struggled to nail down a regular place in his 239 senior minutes and was sent out on loan to Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull, Brighton, and Belgian side Sint-Truiden.
The last of his 12 senior Arsenal appearances came in a 4-2 defeat to Forest in an FA Cup clash in January 2018 – ten months before Saka made his debut.
Nevertheless, Akpom left a lasting mark on the 23-year-old after one of his cameo appearances at the Emirates.
Saka added: “I will always remember, in fact, when I got Chuba’s shirt after a game once. It was after he came on in a game at Emirates Stadium.
“He knows, because he was at Hale End, and I know because I was there too – we know where the Hale End boys sit in the stadium. So afterwards, when he heard us all screaming his name, he threw his shirt to us and I was the one who got it!

“I remember being so happy that day – I think I even DMed him on Instagram afterwards to tell him I got it! I was about 13 and it’s a great memory to have.
“Stuff like that sticks with you, so that’s why, after the games at the Emirates, if I see the Hale End boys I always try to give them my boots or my shorts or something, because I know what it means. For us it might be a little thing, but as a kid it can mean everything.”
Akpom was sold to Greek club PAOK in 2018 before returning to England to play for Middlesbrough where he soon flourished after a slow start.
The striker starred under Michael Carrick and scored 28 goals in 35 Championship games in 2022/23 to earn himself a move to Ajax.
Saka meanwhile has been consistently credited for his role in nurturing academy duo Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, who have both broken into Mikel Arteta‘s side this season.

His injury will come as a big blow, with talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams revealing on commentary duty that Saka looked emotional as he walked towards the tunnel against Crystal Palace, describing him as ‘distressed’.
A key player for Mikel Arteta‘s side, the Gunners will be fearing the prospect of being without the England star for more than five weeks and with that, Arteta must find a viable replacement to keep their title charge on track.
But according to Arsenal legend Keown, it’s the club’s 17-year-old sensation who could provide a surprise solution.
Speaking to talkSPORT.com, Keown said: “I don’t know of a player that has created more chances for his colleagues in the Premier League this season, so he’s obviously going to be a really big miss.
“It’s up to someone to step up, maybe [Ethan] Nwaneri, who has been playing in the [Martin] Odegaard role, maybe he could come in to the front line and give us something different.
“Jesus has suddenly scored five goals in a week, that’s been a long time coming, so he needs to sustain that.
“But it’s in that final third where there needed to be more creativity and it could be less now as you’re losing one of the best players in the Premier League.”
Nwaneri has played for Arsenal 16 times this season, with just three of those coming in the starting lineup.
However with four goals to his name the 17-year-old has looked more than comfortable lining up the Gunners.
But replacing Saka for Arsenal will be no easy task.

Arsenal have a number of important fixtures between now and February
Providing an update on the 23-year-old, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told reporters on Friday: “It is not looking good. He will be out for many weeks.”
Saka has been in incredible form this season having scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in 24 games so far.
Arsenal’s quest to win a first Premier League title in 21 years is still on – Bukayo Saka’s injury doesn’t change anything.
That’s the view of Gunners Invincible Martin Keown, who believes – or possibly hopes – that ‘nervousness could creep into Liverpool’s game’.
7

The Gunners currently sit six points behind leaders Liverpool, who boast a game in hand over Mikel Arteta’s men.
Back-to-back draws with Fulham and Everton threatened to end Arsenal’s title challenge, but an impressive 5-1 win away at Crystal Palace on Saturday has fans holding onto hope.
But Saka’s knock – which is expected to keep him out until February – has Gooners fearing the worst.
Liverpool, meanwhile, went one better than Arsenal in the final weekend before Christmas – scoring six goals away at Tottenham – to rack up their 12th top-flight win from 16 fixtures.
Keown acknowledged Liverpool are the best team, but has insisted there are still plenty of games for them to slip up.
Sandwiched between Liverpool and Arsenal is Chelsea in second spot, who sit four points adrift of the Reds following their goalless draw at Everton.
As for holders Manchester City, they trail the Merseyside giants by a whopping 12 points.
The Citizens were defeated 2-1 at Aston Villa last Saturday – their ninth defeat in their last 12 games in all competitions.
Pep Guardiola‘s men have won the title in the last four years, but they are in a fight for the top four with Etihad outfit seventh in the table.
Speaking to talkSPORT.com, Keown commented on the four teams as he gave his thoughts on the title race.

Arsenal
On Saka’s injury, Keown stated: “It looks like Saka will be out now for around 13 games, we’re all looking at the fixture list.
“I don’t know of a player that has created more chances for his colleagues in the Premier League this season, so he’s obviously going to be a really big miss.
Keown added on Arsenal’s title chances: “You’ve got to make it difficult for your opponent, but Arsenal are still very much in this fight.

“But the fixtures didn’t help Arsenal at the start of the season when you’re having to go to Villa Park, Man City away, Chelsea away, these are all very difficult games.
“And of course some of those fixtures Liverpool haven’t yet done.”
Liverpool
“I was looking at Bournemouth, Brentford and [Nottingham] Forest, they’re all fixtures that Liverpool have to embark on.
“Bournemouth have become a very good team now, certainly at home – beating Arsenal and Man City.
“Forest are the only team to have beaten Liverpool and Brentford have only lost one home game.
“And they’re just three of the games where you’d have looked and thought that is normally three points that they can pick up.

Bukayo Saka spotted on crutches after Arsenal’s win over Crystal Palace
“But this Liverpool team, we’ve reached the halfway mark, there’s no doubt they’re the best team at the moment.
“I thought they were magnificent against Spurs, you could say Spurs were naive – their manager [Ange Postecoglou] wants to continue to play this high line – and the high press.
“But they exploited it and they knew how to do that and their front three were devastating.
“[Diogo] Jota coming off the bench – they’ve got a lot of options in the final third.”
He continued: “There’s a nervousness that could creep into Liverpool’s game.
“They went to Newcastle recently and it was quite difficult for them, even at Southampton they were behind, but they found a way to win.”
7
Liverpool’s record of being top at Christmas hasn’t been a lucky omen for them
Chelsea
“Chelsea have emerged quite brilliantly, didn’t get the win against Everton at the weekend, and Arsenal didn’t beat Everton thee week before.
“So they’ve [Everton] done a good job haven’t they, for their local rivals, Liverpool.
“Their game of course was abandoned shall we say because of the bad weather.
“But there’s still so much football to go, you can’t say it’s in the bag.”
7
Chelsea are embroiled in a surprise title challenge in Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge
Man City
“If you look at Man City, what we’re seeing now is almost unprecedented.”
Keown added: “They need to look now and readjust and maybe look at what is a realistic thing for them to achieve.
“They can’t fall out of the top four, that will be what they’re looking at. There’s a lot hanging over their heads with these [130 financial] charges.
“I don’t know if that’s played a major part, but they just seem to have lost their momentum.
“And now they’re almost losing every game, it’s like that has become a habit now – the basics have gone out the window.
“Their defenders who were unbeatable last year, now I can smell fear amongst their players, against Villa there was definitely a fear on the pitch, that’s got to be eradicated.
7
No one would have expected City’s slump in form following their dominance in recent years
“They’ve got to keep believing and try and pull [themselves] out of trouble, [but] I don’t think they can go above Liverpool now, it just looks as though there’s too big a gap.
“Maybe they could do in previous Man City [teams], but not this current group.”
An Arsenal statement explaining the change read: “Previously set for Boxing Day, our match at home to Ipswich Town will now kick off at 8.15pm on Friday, December 27 and will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video.”
Amazon are broadcasting all of the games across December 26 and 27, with some being spread out to provide the best TV coverage.

Arsenal have scored 5+ goals in seven different Premier League games in 2024 – the last team to do so in more top-flight games in a single calendar year were Burnley (9 in 1960), while the last time the Gunners did so was in 1931 (8).
Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League home games (W8 D3), and are the only side without a home defeat so far this term (W5 D3). The Gunners are looking to keep four consecutive home clean sheets in the league for the first time since November/December 2021.
Ipswich have won two of their last three Premier League away games, having been winless in 12 on the road in the top-flight before this. However, the Tractor Boys are winless in their last 17 Premier League games against sides in the top four of the table (D3 L14), since a 1-0 win against Liverpool at Anfield in January 1995.
Saka picked up a hamstring injury last time out and Arteta has admitted that it’s ‘not looking good’ for his star man heading into the new year.
That means Gabriel Martinelli could play on the right wing unless Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus or even Kai Havertz cover there instead.
Declan Rice only appeared as a substitute against Crystal Palace but he’s likely to return to the line-up while Raheem Sterling has been ruled out.
Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oleksandr Zinchenko are likely to stay on the sidelines.
Mikel Arteta challenges journalist over ‘one Arsenal trophy’ comment
As for Ipswich, Liam Delap is set to return from suspension but captain Sam Morsy will have Christmas at home after picking up his fifth yellow at the weekend.
Morsy’s absence means Man City loanee Kalvin Phillips or Jack Taylor will start next to Jens Cajuste in midfield.
Ben Johnson may be preferred to Harry Clarke at right-back while Axel Tuanzebe and Chiedozie Ogbene are still out injured.
George Hirst won’t be back until the new year, so Delap will come straight back in to lead the line with Conor Chaplin potentially moving to a deeper role.
Arsenal have had more different goalscorers than any other side in the Premier League this season (14), with Gabriel Jesus and Declan Rice netting their first goals of the campaign last time out against Crystal Palace.
Only Manchester City’s Premier League games have seen more goals scored in the opening 15 minutes (13 – F6 A7) than Ipswich’s so far this season (12 – F5 A7).
Gabriel Jesus has scored five goals in his last two games for Arsenal in all competitions, as many as he had in his previous 45. No player has scored multiple goals in three consecutive appearances for the Gunners (all comps) in the Premier League era.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is set to be ruled out until February, talkSPORT understands.
The winger pulled up in the 23rd minute with a hamstring injury immediately after firing in a low cross in the 5-1 win at Crystal Palace.

Saka hit the deck, where he could be seen holding the back of his right leg, before he instantly signalled to the bench.
An Arsenal medic came to his aid, but the 23-year-old was unable to shake off the knock, and was swiftly replaced by Leandro Trossard.
talkSPORT reporter Ian Abrahams revealed on commentary duty that Saka looked emotional as he walked towards the tunnel, describing him as ‘distressed’.
Saka had previously picked up a hamstring injury on international duty in October during England’s defeat to Greece.
He then appeared to tweak it again during his club’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in November.
The player was pictured leaving Palace’s ground on crutches after the game on Saturday.
Now, talkSPORT understands the England star will miss at least five weeks of action.
By the end of January, Arsenal will have played ten games, which includes league showdowns with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brighton, while their first match of February sees them take on reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
Also in that run are two Champions League group stage games, Arsenal’s FA Cup clash at home to Manchester United as well as the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Newcastle.
Arteta conceded after Arsenal’s victory that he is concerned over the Saka’s injury.

Saka has started all but one of Arsenal’s 17 Premier League matches so far this season.
The Three Lions forward has also started in five of the club’s Champions League fixtures, along with one Carabao Cup fixture.
As he has been in previous campaigns, Saka has been Arsenal’s standout player this term.
He has already chipped in with nine goals and 13 assists in all competitions – just 12 goal involvements off his tally from last season.

Saka would have been hoping to add to his tally at Selhurst Park on what was his 250th appearance for Arsenal.
Only Cesc Fabregas and David O’Leary have hit the landmark milestone at a younger age than Saka.

To make matters worse for Arteta and fans, Saka left Selhurst Park in crutches in a sign he could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

At the time of Saka’s injury, Arsenal led 2-1 thanks to Gabriel Jesus’ double, before Kai Havertz added a third in the 38th minute.
Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice then got on the score sheet in the second half as Arsenal closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to three points.
However, that may not be the case for a select uninjured few who receive a yellow card in this weekend’s Gameweek 17 fixtures.
Any player who accumulates five cautions inside the first 19 Premier League games of the season will be suspended for one match.
Seven stars will be available again for GW17 after serving that type of ban, including Alexis Mac Allister, Pedro Neto, Emerson, Yves Bissouma, Calvin Bassey, Boubakary Soumare, and Joao Gomes.
The next milestone that warrants a suspension is 10 yellow cards, so all of the players above won’t miss Boxing Day fitness permitting.
Similarly, Brazilians Andreas Pereira and Joelinton headline the absentees from the final pre-Christmas Premier League games.
The Fulham and Newcastle duo are ruled out this weekend for five bookings, alongside Crystal Palace‘s Daniel Munoz.
As it stands, 38 men remain one yellow away from also hitting that threshold, which would now sideline them for Boxing Day.
A heart-warming admission proved Bukayo Saka will never forget his footballing roots.
Saka has cemented himself as a homegrown hero at Arsenal, having made almost 250 appearances for the Gunners since his debut in 2018.
4
Saka has not forgotten where his football career beganCredit: Getty
The 23-year-old has also represented England at two European Championships and the 2022 World Cup.
Safe to say, Saka has come a long way from when he began his football journey with Greenford Celtic in west London.
But no matter how far he travels across the globe and the staggering calibre of opponents he plays against, his hometown club will always hold a special place in his heart.
In a promotional video for American bank Chase, Saka caught up with Colin Nixon, who was the England international’s first coach.
As the pair caught up, Saka revealed he still has a Greenford Celtic shirt in his possession – and it’s in excellent company.
“In my house, I have some very special shirts, some big names,” Saka said.
“[Thierry] Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, also a shirt that’s up there is my Greenford Celtic shirt that I wore when I was playing under Colin.
“It’s where I started this whole journey. I’m here today because Colin was one of the people who gave me an opportunity to play football, and from there I got scouted.
“So it was an honour to link up with Colin again.”
Saka has played Ronaldo three times in his career, with all of their encounters taking place in the Premier League during CR7’s second spell with Manchester United.

Ronaldo scored twice in their first game against one another as United emerged 3-2 victors in the 2021/22 season.
Arsenal exacted their revenge by beating United 3-1 in the reverse fixture, with Saka scoring the Gunners’ second.
Ronaldo had to make do with a spot on the bench for the third game in which he faced off against Saka, although the Red Devils won 3-1.
As for Henry, Saka certainly has happier memories of his encounters with the Gunners icon.
Henry coached Saka during his days working in the club’s academy, but not even he could have foreseen the 23-year-old going on to enjoy the career he has to date.
Saka is already producing some special numbers this season
“He’s been there for so long and he’s so nice. I never thought he would reach the levels we are seeing.
“He’s a starter for Arsenal, he’s a starter for England. I remember when he started he was playing wing-back and the evolution of his game is outstanding because he used to be so lively, to now scoring goals and assists.”
Although Saka has cemented himself as one of Arsenal’s most vital stars, he has some way to go before he matches Henry’s feats.
Throughout his two stints with the Gunners, Henry registered 228 goals and 93 assists in 377 appearances across all competitions.
Henry also helped Arsenal to two Premier League titles and two FA Cup triumphs.
The French icon also finished second and third in the Ballon d’Or rankings in 2003 and 2006 respectively, highlighting his status in the global game.
