‘It’s a bit silly’ – talkSPORT hosts clash over combined north London derby XI

Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy clashed over which Tottenham players should feature in a combined north London derby with Arsenal stars.

The bitter rivals will battle for the first time this season on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with a feisty match on the cards.

Derby days give fans the chance to create starting XI’s consisting of players from both sides, with Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit telling talkSPORT that Spurs would maybe have two players ‘maximum’.

This is despite the Gunners being set to miss Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard through suspension and injury respectively.

“I think he’s talking garbage,” said O’Hara in response to Petit, before he and Cundy failed to agree on a combined north London derby XI, with the full Sports Bar clash below.

Cundy: What’s he said that’s upset you?

O’Hara: Well, two players, what’s he talking about? How many Arsenal players get in Spurs’ team?

Cundy: Right, well I’m putting Van de Ven in there. I know [Andy] Goldstein recommended him and they shot him down. I’m having [Micky] Van de Ven alongside [William] Saliba.

O’Hara: Yes… Pedro Porro is a better player than Ben White.

Cundy: No, but he’s not mate.

    O’Hara: Yes he is!

Cundy: No he’s not, he’s not better than Ben White.

O’Hara: Yes he is! Pedro Porro is an amazing football player, and [Destiny] Udogie plays week in, week out at left-back. He was one of the best left-backs in the country last season.

Cundy: Was he? One of the best in the country? You might have overdone that a little bit…

O’Hara: No, I’m not over-egging it at all.

Former Arsenal Player Emmanuel Petit Claims Only One Tottenham Player Would Get Into The Arsenal Team

Cundy: One of the best in the country?

O’Hara: Didn’t he get in the team of the season?

Cundy: Did he? Are you sure about that?

O’Hara: Mate, I’m sure he was close to it… I think he got in it, I’m not 100 per cent.

    [Editor note: He didn’t]

But, they [Arsenal] bought a left-back because their left-back’s been poor. So for Emmanuel Petit to come out and say only two players get in…

Cundy: He’s won a World Cup mate, he can say what he wants…

O’Hara: I know he can say what he wants, of course he can, absolutely. But, he’s talking rubbish.

Cundy insisted Porro is not as good as Arsenal's White

Cundy: Right, I’m having three. Van de Ven, [James] Maddison in… [Kai] Havertz high up, Maddison can play where Odegaard does, and I’m having [Heung-min] Son on the left. That’s from having three in there.

O’Hara: I disagree mate. Look, without Rice, they’ve got Thomas Partey or Jorginho, right, to choose from. [Yves] Bissouma’s a better player.

Cundy: I don’t know if Bissouma is… is he fit? I don’t know if he’s fit mate.

    O’Hara: Bissouma’s a better player.

Cundy: Ok. I’m just telling you now mate, I’m having three in there.

O’Hara: Obviously [Bukayo] Saka goes on the right and Havertz, at the moment in time… you have to put him up front, down the middle because he’s doing alright.

Cundy: And Maddison in behind him… Give us your team then!

    O’Hara: Well… there’s an argument for [Guglielmo] Vicario…

Cundy: Look, J, listen, don’t argue with me or yourself, give us your team.

    O’Hara: But I just…

    Cundy: Give us your team!

O’Hara: It’s annoyed me because, you know, this Arsenal lot think they’re Real Madrid, they literally think they’re Real Madrid.

Cundy: Give us your team, who’s in goal?

O’Hara: [David] Raya. Udogie, Van de Ven, Saliba, Porro…

Cundy: So three of the back four are Spurs?

    O’Hara: Yes, 100 per cent.

    Cundy: Ok, go on.

O’Hara: Then I would say Bissouma and Thomas Partey, I don’t know who’s fit.

Cundy: Well Partey’s fit and Jorginho is fit from what we got…

O’Hara: Maddison, Son, Saka, Havertz. You can’t argue with that, there’s no argument, you can’t argue with that.

Cundy: You know Arsenal had the best defence in the league last season?

    O’Hara: I don’t care.

Cundy: And you’ve got three of the back four…

O’Hara: Yep, Saliba was their best player… so Saliba’s in there.

Cundy: Saka was their best player… mate, you can’t have Porro over Ben White, you can’t mate.

O’Hara: Mate, Porro is top quality.

Cundy: No, he’s not better than… mate, come on, that’s being a bit silly.

O’Hara: Listen, I’m not being silly!

    Cundy: It’s a bit silly.

O’Hara: Ask any Spurs fan, and ask an Arsenal fan.

Cundy: Well ok, well listen, ask them now!

So that’s six from Tottenham and five from Arsenal in O’Hara’s combined north London derby XI – how do you rate it?

Fans left stunned as two England stars are left out of PFA Team of the Year

Cole Palmer may have scooped the PFA Young Player of the Year award – but there was no room for him in the PFA Team of the Year.

And his England teammate Bukayo Saka was also a notable omission from the line-up despite a stunning season for Arsenal.

Fans have been left stunned by Palmer and Saka's omission from the PFA Team

The pair were also two of England‘s key players at Euro 2024, where Palmer scored in the 2-1 final defeat to Spain.

Palmer set the top-flight alight after joining Chelsea from Manchester City, where he chipped in with 25 goals and 15 assists in all competitions for the Blues.

Meanwhile Saka, who won the Young Player gong last year, put in career best stats of 20 goals and 14 assists as Arsenal were narrowly pipped to the Premier League title by City.

However neither man were selected by the PFA, which saw five Arsenal players and four City stars included.

Football fans were left shocked by the decision, with social media flooded with stunned comments.

One X user posted: “No Palmer or Saka, that’s why these awards can never ever be taken seriously.”

Another messaged: “What’s a PFA Team of the Year list without Palmer or Saka? That’s a totally dishonest list.”

A third added: “Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer deserved to be there.”

This fan commented: “Saka deserved this more than anyone tbh, Palmer also should be in here.”

And this user simply stated: “No Palmer and Saka is crazy.”

It was Saka and Palmer’s England international teammate Phil Foden who scooped the top PFA award, where he was crowned as the Player of the Year.

And he was unsurprisingly named in the PFA Team of the Year – at the expense of both Saka and Palmer.

David Raya, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard were Arsenal’s representatives in the starting XI.

Danny Murphy claims Cole Palmer’s 9-year contract at Chelsea is ‘crazy’ and a massive ‘gamble’ that could backfire

Meanwhile Foden, Kyle Walker, Rodri and Erling Haaland were the City players picked by the PFA.

Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk slotted in alongside Gabriel, Saliba and Walker in defence.

And Ollie Watkins – another member of England’s Euro 2024 squad – was picked in attack after a brilliant campaign for Aston Villa.

  • The stunning Arsenal XI that Julian Alvarez could offer Arteta in title charge

The stunning Arsenal XI that Julian Alvarez could offer Arteta in title charge

Arsenal could boast two different yet equally excellent starting XIs next season if they continue their impressive summer business.

The Gunners have already welcomed David Raya on a permanent deal and the new signing of Riccardo Calafiori so far this transfer window.

Ahead of the new season, talkSPORT understands Mikel Arteta’s side are in talks with Real Sociedad for midfielder Mikel Merino.

We also reported earlier on Saturday that Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Julian Alvarez from their Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

Alvarez, who was part of his nation’s Copa America-winning squad this summer, revealed that he’d be considering his City future, saying: “I haven’t stopped to think about what I’m going to do.

“Last season I was one of the players who played the most minutes in the team.

“But it’s true: in the end, in some important games, it’s not pleasant to be left out. I will have time to consider my decision.

“I haven’t stopped to think things through calmly. Once the Olympic Games are over, I will take the time to reflect on what I want for myself.

“Maybe it’s annoying to be out in big games; players always want to help on the pitch.”

The north London outfit will surely challenge for the crown yet again if they’re able to sign both, and talkSPORT.com has looked at two ways in which they could line-up with the potential new additions.

Raya is set to retain his spot as Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper after keeping 20 clean sheets in all competitions last season on loan from Brentford.

Coming in as the new left-back could be Calafiori, who has joined in a deal from Bologna that could reach £38million with add-ons.

Although the Italian international is most notably a centre-back, he has previously played as a full-back during his career.

One of the key reasons as to why Arsenal conceded the least goals in the Premier League last season – 29 – was their centre-back pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba.

The Brazilian and French duo have proven incredibly difficult to face on various occasions and are one of the best partnerships in football.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard admits he’s happy with the current Gunners squad when asked if the club will make any new signings after bringing in Ricardo Calafiori

Ben White will likely become the fourth centre-back to feature in the Arsenal backline having successfully moved into the right-back role under Arteta.

Sitting ahead of the defence to operate as their defensive midfielder will most certainly be Declan Rice.

He featured in all 38 of their league games last season, scoring an impressive seven goals and assisting a further nine.

Arsenal’s could be set to start two players in the no.8 role in front of Rice, with Sociedad star Merino possibly one of those included.

The 28-year-old, who previously played in the Premier League for Newcastle, starred for Spain during their Euro 2024 triumph and has a great eye for a pass in the middle of the park.

Club captain Martin Odegaard will likely play alongside him, with the Norwegian one of the best playmakers in the league.

He scored 11 goals and assisted another 11 in all competitions last season, with his creativity proving influential when the Gunners go forward.

Despite a difficult final few weeks in the previous campaign, Gabriel Martinelli could still be given the nod at left-wing by Arteta.

However, should Arsenal complete the signing of two-time Premier League champion Alvarez from City, the boss’ thinking could change.

Although an appearance of the left of the attack with the reigning champions isn’t the go-to, he has played there for Argentina.

Alvarez also boasts a strong right foot, so he would be able cut inside and fire towards goal should the opportunity arise.

The 24-year-old could also find himself starting in a central attacking role in Arsenal’s front three given his success there for City and his country.

This is an alternative way that Arteta could organise his side...

This is an alternative way that Arteta could organise his side…

Kai Havertz would likely be his strongest competition for that spot as he ended the 2023/24 campaign with 14 goals in all competitions despite his slow start.

Completing the line-up is their star man Bukayo Saka, whose 20 goals and 14 assists last season make him worthy of starting for any top club across Europe.

Arsenal start their season with a home clash with Wolves on Saturday, August 17.

Fans joke they know the real reason why Saka is not on Arsenal’s pre-season tour

Arsenal fans have joked there is nothing Bukayo Saka cannot do following a stunning season for club and country.

The Gunners winger helped the north London giants to a second successive Premier League runners-up spot last season, while also helping fire England to the Euro 2024 final.

    3

Saka is on a well-earned break following a busy 2024/25 seasonCredit: Getty

And after coming up short in his quest to lift both trophies, the 22-year-old is on a well-earned extended break, with the player not with his side on their pre-season tour of America.

Though some Gooners believe this is because he has instead swapped sports for the summer and is competing at the Paris Olympics as a swimmer.

As the second men’s 100m backstroke heat was about to begin on Sunday, eagle-eyed spectators noticed a familiar surname amongst the contenders.

Competing in lane five was Turkey’s Berke Saka, who finished the race in seventh spot.

But that didn’t stop Arsenal fans from joking it was their ‘Starboy’ in action.

One X user posted: “Saka needs a rest. From Euros (football) to Olympics (swimming).”

Another quipped: “The reason why Saka isn’t on the US tour.”

A third added: “Is there anything he can’t do? My Starboy.”

This person then joked: “Personally I would have put him in lane eight. Much more effective wide right than centre.”

And one then messaged: “Right Wing, Left Wing, Left Back, Right Back, BackStroke… he’s so versatile.”

Meanwhile this fan simply stated: “Starboy never stops.”

Saka is not expected to link up with Arsenal until after they return to London next week.

The Gunners face Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen at the Emirates on August 7, but that fixture could come too soon for the Hale End graduate.

Arsenal release new kit with major change to the club canon badge and fans love it as Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Alessia Russo model it

Though he could be back on the pitch for the Emirates Cup tie with Lyon on August 11.

Mikel Arteta will be keen for the youngster to get some minutes in pre-season with the Premier League opener against Wolves under three weeks away.

  • Arsenal have found the perfect fit, while new Saka partner could be game changer

Arsenal have found the perfect fit, while new Saka partner could be game changer

If the transfer market was run like a dating app, Mikel Arteta’s search criteria would see him tick ‘tall’, ‘technical’ and ‘adaptable’ almost every time he logged on.

Size matters to the Spaniard, along with skill and multi-functionality.

    5

Arteta has definitely developed a type in the transfer marketCredit: Getty

Look at Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Jakub Kiwior. All physically imposing acquisitions of his, who are great on the ball yet not defined by a single role.

Playing fluid football like his, you need players who can seamlessly move from one area to the next.

Big ‘uns are also a key part of Arteta’s imprint.

Those imposing tunnel stare downs, Patrick Vieira-style, can intimidate opponents (which helps sometimes) and after gaining so many extra points courtesy of set piece dominance, it’s a ploy that’s sure to be continued.

    Caliafiori: The perfect fit

So, when you think about it, Arsenal’s summer pursuit of Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori makes sense on just about every level.

Ticking all those boxes I’ve referenced; he fits in beautifully with the model that’s being created at the Emirates Stadium.

The 22-year-old is an elegant central defender blessed with height, pace, bravery, a strong reading of the game, and fantastic quality on the ball.

The way he carried it forward for Luciano Spalletti’s side at Euro 2024 was great to watch, as was his progressive distribution.

Calafiori starred for Italy at Euro 2024

    5

Calafiori starred for Italy at Euro 2024Credit: Getty

Arteta will have noted this long before he kicked a ball in the competition, of course.

In Serie A for Bologna last term, Calafiori raced forward to supply five assists in his last ten starts.

    Left-back option

Crucially, and certainly not coincidentally, the youngster can also operate comfortably at left-back; a position which is very much up for grabs.

At first glance Arsenal look left-back heavy, with Timber, Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu all viable options.

Strip things away though, and the reality is different.

Tomiyasu is more right-sided, Tierney is unlikely to be in Arteta’s plans, while Kiwior and Zinchenko are both being linked with transfers.

Zinchenko could be among the players to leave Arsenal this summer

    5

Zinchenko could be among the players to leave Arsenal this summerCredit: Getty

The Pole is more likely to depart in search of regular game time, with the Ukrainian potentially becoming a left midfield option, having lost some form and trust in the defensive side of his game.

Fit again Timber will probably start 2024/25 at left back, and deservedly so, but if Kiwior leaves and Zinny isn’t under consideration, the squad will need a natural left footer like Calafiori to fill that void.

Breaking up the best centre-back partnership in the division is not under consideration, but as far as cover for William Saliba or Gabriel Maghalaes goes, you aren’t going to get much better than the highly rated Italian.

Arsenal were fortunate to keep both central defenders fit for the entirety of last season, but might not be as lucky this time around. They must be prepared.

Remember, Arteta also loves a back four containing a quartet of centre backs.

Cover for Saliba and Gabriel could be key this season

    5

Cover for Saliba and Gabriel could be key this seasonCredit: Getty

Former Stoke City boss Tony Pulis was pilloried for doing the same, but Arsenal’s rearguard doesn’t just kick it and head it. White and Calafiori are rounded footballers with the ability to smoothly build play and create.

Offering the same technical prowess as a diminutive full back, while at the same time adding to Arsenal’s armoury when attacking and defending set pieces, why wouldn’t you use them there?

At a good age with scope for massive development, Calafiori feels tailor-made to be a key part of this Arsenal squad moving forwards.

I really hope it’s a move that comes off.

Would be nice to get Nico

I’m also excited that Arsenal are in the mix to sign Nico Williams, a contender for Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024

Just like Calafiori, the Spanish winger fulfils all the criteria in Arteta’s search engine.

We know the Arsenal gaffer can be ruthless if he thinks a position can be upgraded, even when the present incumbents are doing just fine. Ask Aaron Ramsdale all about that.

So should Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus be a little worried about their place on the left of the Gunners attack? Maybe.

Trossard’s lethal finishing and versatility will guarantee him plenty more opportunities, but on the back of under-par seasons from Martinelli and Jesus, it will be fascinating to see if Arteta opts to bring in somebody above them.

Williams’ numbers in LaLiga are certainly outstanding for a 21-year-old.

Providing 11 assists, he was a constant menace to full-backs throughout a stellar individual campaign for Athletic Bilbao.

Williams caused havoc for defenders in LaLiga last season

    5

Williams caused havoc for defenders in LaLiga last season

If Williams does move to Arsenal and plays the left, he would simultaneously offer useful cover for Bukayo Saka on the other flank too.

The Spain international is not perturbed at the prospect of switching wings.

Encountering many opponents who will try and stifle Arsenal with defensive tactics next term, the explosive and skilful Williams could be a magnificent, game-changing addition.

    No time to stand still

As they’re in such high demand let’s not jump the gun and suggest Calafiori and Williams are done deals – but these links do show that times are a changing in north London.

Arteta hasn’t come this far to sit on his hands and hope for the best.

OK there’s no title to show for it yet, but these are good times in N5 and he knows that Arsenal’s current attractiveness has to be exploited in the transfer window.

Top players will definitely be interested, and if he can do deals to recruit two of the brightest young stars of Euro 2024 in the coming weeks, it will be the perfect way to encourage others to follow them through the door.

  • Brighton beat Premier League and European clubs to signing of ‘next Saka’

Brighton beat Premier League and European clubs to signing of ‘next Saka’

Brighton have won the race to sign Amario Cozier-Duberry, who has been described as the ‘next Bukayo Saka’.

Cozier-Duberry left Arsenal this summer after his contract expired which sparked a battle for the 19-year-old’s signature.

    2

Brighton announced the arrival of the winger on a four-year contract, beating Newcastle to his signature, while Arsenal were also keen to keep him on.

talkSPORT understands that Borussia Dortmund were also interested in signing Cozier-Duberry.

Arsenal had also been desperate to keep hold of the teenager, who had been heralded as one of the top stars in their academy by Jack Wilshere.

“Amario is very exciting and Mikel [Arteta] likes him,” Arsenal academy coach Wilshere said.

“He reminds me of Bukayo Saka, plays in the same position as him, needs to get better with his decision-making like Bukayo did, but he’s definitely exciting.”

Brighton have moved quickly in the transfer window this summer with Fabian Hurzeler appointed as head coach to replace Roberto De Zerbi, who resigned at the end of the season and joined Marseille.

The Seagulls broke their transfer record last month when they signed Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle for a fee north of £30million.

Mats Wieffer also joined this week from Feyenoord while Ibrahim Osman has arrived from Nordsjaelland in a deal that was agreed upon earlier this year.

Cozier-Duberry is likely to join up with Brighton’s academy with a view to making the first team.

The Londoner had been with Arsenal since 2019, joining their Hale End academy at the age of 14.

He never made an appearance for the Gunners despite Wilshere’s high praise, though he did make the squad on three occasions.

Speaking to Arsenal’s website last year, the youngster confessed to idolising Thierry Henry and Arjen Robben.

He said: “I’ve been an Arsenal fan since I was young and I looked up to players like Thierry Henry, whose one of the greatest to ever play the game.

“But I also looked up to Arjen Robben who had a wand of a left foot and had the unstoppable cut-inside move.”

Bukayo Saka appears to spit out iconic English dish in funny snack challenge

Bukayo Saka may be England’s ‘Starboy’ – but he isn’t a fan of some of the country’s most iconic dishes.

The Arsenal winger has taken part in SPORTbible’s Snack Wars, where guests taste a variety of food dishes from two countries.

    3

Saka was left almost being sick after tasting cauliflower cheese for the first timeCredit: YouTube @ LADbible TV

In the latest episode, Saka had to eat food from England and Nigeria, where his parents hail from.

And it was the African nation who just about edged the victory – winning 3-2 – with two staples of the English cuisine in particular rubbing the 22-year-old up the wrong way.

The first round saw him presented with Jollof rice against cauliflower cheese, with Saka, who has his own sauce at restaurant Nando’s, appearing to spit out the latter.

After taking a first bite, the Hale End graduate immediately started shaking his head, where he then put his hand to his mouth.

The camera then cut to him lifting his head up from under the table.

Things didn’t get better for Saka in round two after a scotch egg was laid out for him, leading him to state: “I don’t do scotch eggs.”

He was left flabbergasted after being told it contains pork, with the forward slicing it in half to get a better look.

Clearly not impressed, he let out a loud groan of disapproval before ultimately opting against even trying it.

England got their first win in the chocolate category with a Twix bar coming out on top against Milo Energy Cubes.

In the crisp round, Saka was presented with Twiglets – a product he has incredibly never heard of before.

Describing them as ‘looking like chicken bones’, he gave them a 0/10 for being tasteless, with plantain chips giving Nigeria a 3-1 lead.

But England managed to salvage some face in the sweet category, with Love Hearts trumping mint-flavoured candy Tom Tom.

Arsenal dominate but no Man City stars – Mark Goldbridge’s Team of the Season

Manchester City currently top the Premier League but none of their stars make it into Mark Goldbridge’s Team of the Season.

With just a month of top-flight action left to play, clubs and players will be giving their final pushes for their respective goals.

A number of stars have consistently been at the top of their game, others also emerging as surprise packages during what has been a thoroughly enjoyable season.

talkSPORT’s Goldbridge has named his Team of the Season and it’s Arsenal who dominate his selections, with no Manchester City players making the cut despite sitting top.

He said: “I want to do this a little bit differently than maybe a combined Premier League title race XI, because I want to give it to players I think have exceeded expectations and been really, really good.”

Starting with his goalkeeper, he said: “I’m tempted to say [Guglielmo] Vicario in goal actually. Alisson is very obvious but he’s had an injury and he is the best goalkeeper in the world, whereas I think Vicario deserves it.

“Yeah he’s been a bit shaky on crosses but Spurs are fifth in the league, probably going to finish fourth, which is amazing. He’s made some big saves and he came in from nowhere, so Vicario for me.”

At full-back, Goldbridge said: “I would put Ben White at right-back. I think Trent’s [Alexander-Arnold] a better right-back but across the whole season, I think he’s gone unnoticed Ben White by a lot of people, he’s been absolutely incredible.

“I think it [left-back] would have to be, for me, [Destiny] Udogie at Spurs. When I saw him against Chelsea and he got the second yellow, I was like, ‘Here we go, Spurs have bought another undisciplined, inconsistent player.’ But actually he’s been really consistent and he’s been a massive part of Spurs’ success this season.”

“I think because it’s a partnership, I wanted a partnership so I’m going to go Gabriel and [William] Saliba,” he said on his centre-back choices.

“Saliba obviously gets a lot of plaudits as a fantastic European world-class sort of centre-back, he’s moving in that area.

“Gabriel, I think if you speak to Arsenal fans, they would say in some ways he’s had a better season. He’s a goal threat, he’s getting the most out of his abilities. I think he deserves to play next to Saliba.”

Mark Goldbridge name his title race combined XI with stars from Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool

When selecting his midfield, Goldbridge said: “I’d start off with Declan Rice as the holding midfielder. Even though I think Rodri is better, I think being bought for £100million and how good Arsenal have been, you’ve got to acknowledge that in a team of the season.

“So Declan Rice would be the sort of no.6, no.8 I would use [Alexis] Mac Allister even though I think he’s suitable a little bit deeper, he can play that role. He’s scored some big goals, I think he’s signing of the season.

“And then I probably would drop no.10, it wouldn’t be [Kevin] De Bruyne because he’s been out for a long time, so it would have to be Foden or Cole Palmer for me for that spot.

“I think Palmer from Man City to Chelsea has been brilliant. In a terrible Chelsea team, he has been unbelievable. At such a young age to come down to London from Man City and to deliver the way that he has consistently, the mentality on young shoulders.”

And for his front three, Goldbridge said: “I think [Bukayo] Saka, [Mohamed] Salah and [Erling] Haaland are the best three in the Premier League as a front three, but do they deserve to be in a team of the season?

“I don’t think they do. So I’m going to go Anthony Gordon off the left, I think he’s had an amazing season for Newcastle and really justified that price tag that I thought was over the top. In a poor Newcastle side, I think his numbers have been fantastic.

“I think Ollie Watkins has to be in there, goals and assists all season for Aston Villa and they’re in a race for Champions League football. He can score and also provide, I think he’s only second to Salah in relation to that so I’ve put Watkins there.

“And then right-wing is probably the hardest one of the lot because you could make a case for Jarrod Bowen. You could certainly make an outside case for someone like [Alejandro] Garnacho but I still think it has to be Saka in that place.

“I’m just going to put Saka there because people still think he’s not had a good season for Arsenal… He’s had a couple of dips but I still think he’s had a very good season for Arsenal.”

Arsenal therefore have five players in the XI and Spurs make up two of the spots, with the others all coming from Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Selections will be subject to wide debate, but there’s no doubt that Goldbridge’s squad is stacked with talent.

Dyer says ‘son-in-law’ is as good as Saka and backs him for Euro 2024 role

Danny Dyer has shrugged off suggestions that Bukayo Saka is superior to Jarrod Bowen, labelling them as a ‘myth’.

Saka has continued to prove his worth to Premier League table-toppers Arsenal this season as they hunt down their first league title in 20 years.

Bowen has been equally decisive for the Hammers as they target Europa League success and a top six Premier League finish.

Whilst Saka is a shoo-in for the Three Lions at this summer’s Euro 2024, Bowen is also in line to be included in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Bowen is in a long-term relationship with Dyer’s eldest daughter Dani, with whom he has two children with and Bowen’s ‘father-in-law’ believes the West Ham star has done more than enough to book his seat on the plane to Germany.

“What a player he is, what a man he is, he’s been incredible for us,” Dyer said in a glowing tribute to Bowen on talkSPORT. “He’s the father of my grandchildren which is a beautiful thing.”

“He’s got to be on the plane. I might be biased but I think he’s as good as Saka in that position. I think he’s got all of his attributes, he’s as strong as him or stronger.

“I think he’s great with the ball, he can finish and also he can play anywhere up front and I don’t think Saka can.

“Personally, I think it’s a myth that Saka is better. I think Jarrod’s decision making on the field is unbelievable, very rarely does he make a mistake, that man.

“He’s a very reliable player and one-on-one, there’s nobody better.”

Dyer was speaking ahead of his participation in Soccer Aid for UNICEF which takes place from Stamford Bridge on Sunday, June 9.

The World’s biggest celebrity football match pits England against a World XI FC with a host of familiar names set to take part.

Danny Murphy argues why Chelsea star Cole Palmer is better than Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka

Dyer joins Jermain Defoe, Jill Scott, David James, Gary Cahill, Joe Cole and Karen Carney in the match.

Chelsea legend Eden Hazard will also feature alongside cricketer Stuart Broad, King of the Jungle Sam Thompson, Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah and Roman Kemp.

“It’s amazing, I did it last year,” Dyer added. ”To be part of something as big as this, Unicef is an amazing charity, they do so much for people around the world.

“To be asked to get involved and pretend to be a footballer for a few days with ex-pros, it’s amazing.”

  • ‘A terrible decision’ – Bukayo Saka goal sparks controversy

‘A terrible decision’ – Bukayo Saka goal sparks controversy

Arsenal took the lead at Brighton in controversial fashion as Bukayo Saka fired home from the penalty spot.

But talkSPORT presenters Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara have insisted that VAR should have overturned the spot-kick.

The Gunners took the lead in the 33rd minute from 12 yards out after John Brooks adjudged Tariq Lamptey to have fouled Gabriel Jesus.

But replays showed that the ex-Chelsea right-back had got the ball first, before taking away the Brazilian forward’s legs.

Despite the Seagulls protests, the decision stood, with Saka slotting home his 14th goal of the Premier League season into the bottom left corner.

And this led ex-Blues defender Cundy and former Tottenham midfielder O’Hara to express their shock at the call.

On the GameDay Phone-In, Cundy said: “A terrible, terrible decision.

“VAR is there – I see why the ref has given it – and at full speed, you think, ‘Yeah, that is a pen,’ and then you see it, he gets the ball.

“It’s about the ball, he gets the ball, he rushes – it’s not a great tackle from Lamptey I have to say – he gives the referee a decision to make.

“But the truth is, VAR have got to step in, it’s never a penalty.”

Jamie O’Hara then remarked: “It feels like big team bias there.

“We’ve seen the Man City one with Crystal Palace today [Josko Gvardiol on Eberechi Eze].

“You go, ‘That’s a penalty,’ and we’ve seen one there.”

Interjecting, Cundy then stated: “That’s worse. He gets the ball.”

O’Hara then declared: “I know I’m playing on the balance side of things.

“But when you watch it, Lamptey gets the ball. It’s a bad decision.”
