‘First leg for the ages’: Comebacks galore as Spanish rivals play out wild eight-goal thriller in Cup semi

After Diego Simeone’s side scored twice in the opening six minutes through Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann, Barca raced through the gears in a high-octane performance.

The superb Pedri Gonzalez pulled one back with Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and Robert Lewandowski going on to score for the Catalan giants.

Marcos Llorente netted for Atletico before Alexander Sorloth struck in the 93rd minute to leave the tie perfectly poised ahead of the second leg at the Metropolitano stadium on April 2.

“It’s a terrible result when you go 4-2 up… you have to be more careful, these are things we have to learn,” Pedri told Movistar.

“Today we started badly but I’ll focus on how the team reacted.

“When we got in front we have to be calmer… it will be a difficult (second leg) but we will go there to try and win.”

Hansi Flick left Barca’s top goalscorer Lewandowski out of the starting line-up, with Ferran Torres taking his place in a false nine role.

Simeone picked a strong side despite his side’s extremely tricky fixture list, with this the first of three matches against Barca and a Champions League last 16 tie against Real Madrid on the horizon.

Atletico took the lead inside the first minute, with Alvarez pouncing at the back post after Griezmann’s cross was flicked on.

Atletico doubled their lead in the sixth minute when Jules Kounde gave the ball away and Alvarez produced a stunning pass to release Griezmann.

The French forward was being pressured by Alejandro Balde but cleverly worked room for a shot, which Wojciech Szczesny got a hand to but could not keep out.

After Atletico’s opening salvo, Barcelona dominated the rest of the first half. Ferran Torres should have levelled for Barcelona after Raphinha sent him through on goal but his shot was week and Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso saved easily.

The La Liga leaders hit two goals in two minutes to pull back level, with Kounde setting up Pedri for the first before Cubarsi nodded home from a corner.

Torres spurned another golden chance for Barca’s third, rounding Musso but misfiring under pressure from Clement Lenglet, on loan from the Catalans at Atletico.

    – ‘90 minutes to go’ –

Szczesny saved well from Griezmann at the start of the second half, with Barca still largely in control.

Sorloth had a goal disallowed for off-side as the visitors sought an equaliser, but instead it was Barca who moved further ahead.

Teenage winger Lamine Yamal created it with a brilliant dribble, blazing past Reinildo Mandava and squaring for substitute Lewandowski to tap home.

Barcelona’s performance merited their lead but Llorente’s 84th minute strike from the edge of the box opened the door for Sorloth to net late on.

The Norwegian forward grabbed Atletico a last-gasp victory at Barca’s Olympic stadium in December in La Liga and he was in the right place at the right time once more to finish from Samuel Lino’s cut-back.

“It was crazy, a lot of goals, we knew it wouldn’t be easy against one of the best teams in Europe, they’ve proved that,” Alvarez told Movistar.

“We did our work too though and there’s 90 minutes to go… we have to continue on this path.” On Wednesday Real Madrid visit Real Sociedad in the other semi-final first leg.

  • Feud between PL greats fires up as ‘ignorant’ ‘major tournament’ comments sparks fury

Feud between PL greats fires up as ‘ignorant’ ‘major tournament’ comments sparks fury

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has taken to social media in an attempt to clarify his controversial comments made about the Africa Cup of Nations on Sky Sports.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

Carragher and his fellow pundits Micah Richards, Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge were discussing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or credentials as the Liverpool star puts together what Carragher said will “end up being the greatest season we’ve ever seen from an individual”.

But Carragher also said after Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Manchester City that Salah’s chances of winning football’s individual top gong were hindered because the Egyptian does not get the opportunity to play in the Euros or the Copa America.

“I think the problem (is) the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe got a great chance of winning, I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament,” Carragher said on Sky Sports

“Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr and (Kylian) Mbappe right now – Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League.

“Liverpool will be in that conversation, but right now (Real Madrid’s players) are certainly the front runner.”

Richards and Sturridge immediately disputed Carragher’s comments.

“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying, “They aren’t taking it serious”. AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know,” Richards said.

Carragher then responded by posing whether Egypt would be a contender to win the World Cup next year, to which Richards replied: “No, but AFCON is big, isn’t it? You remember when him and Mané was going for it.”

Carragher responded by saying “oh god”, prompting Sturridge to step in.

“It’s a fact. It’s a fact. It’s a fact. If you win the Euros or Copa América it’s deemed to be big so the AFCON is in the same level,” the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker said.

Carragher has been slammed on social media for his remarks, including from Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand.

The former England centre backs have a history of public spats, and this time Ferdinand blasted Carragher on his YouTube channel for his “ignorant” take.

“I think [what he said] is representative of most of the people out there. But I don’t think that’s right. It’s an ignorant thought process,” Ferdinand said.

“If you go to Didier Drogba, Abedi Pele , Samuel Eto, Riyad Mahrez, Mo Salah or Sadio Mane, they’ll tell you, “We have to win this” – there’s demand in their country to win this.

“Yes, it doesn’t get backed resources-wise like the Euros but that doesn’t mean you have to devalue it. It should be respected more than it is.

“I understand what Jamie’s saying but I don’t agree with it. That’s the majority’s fault and its not right.

“I think the federations like FIFA need to make sure they implement language around AFCON so it equals the Euros and the Copa America.

“Jamie is right in what he is saying. If Salah won AFCON that would have no bearing on anyone when they vote for the Ballon d’Or, which is absolutely wrong.”

Carragher called Ferdinand “a clown” in response, commenting on his Instagram post saying “I didn’t say that you clown, stop playing to the gallery like you always do”.

He also posted on X to try clarify his comments.

“The point I was trying to make yesterday was that MO Salah is at a disadvantage playing for Egypt in terms of him winning the Balon d’Or,” Carragher said.

“If Salah had an average season at LFC but won the AFCON & was MVP I don’t think he would win the Balon d’Or.

“Because I don’t think AFCON carries the weight of other tournaments. But if Mbappe had an average season at Real Madrid but won the World Cup/Euros he would still have a great opportunity.

“It’s not just about certain tournaments, Shevchenko (Ukraine) Lewandowski (Poland) were never going to win the WC/Euros to help their case for the prize. I don’t think it’s controversial at all really it’s just a fact.

“I know Mane came 2nd a few years back after winning the tournament but that alone wouldn’t have got him to that position, it was LFC being two games away from a quadruple that played a big role also.

“It’s not disrespectful if I feel the WC/Euros/CP are better tournaments it’s just my opinion when I watch them. Saying it wasn’t a major competition was clumsy but I think most people watching could understand the point I was trying to make.

“The face I pulled when Micah interjected was nothing to do with the merits of the tournament, I just knew as soon as he did what the reaction was going to be! I get a lot people didn’t like what I said & that’s fine.

“I don’t normally respond to things on here with posts like this but I decided to tweet in the end after seeing so many phonies jumping on the bandwagon & playing to the gallery when they knew what I meant. Good luck MO you little dancer.”

The Confederation of African Football’s social media accounts have also taken digs at Carragher, with several posts referring to this year’s AFCON in Morocco being a “major tournament”.

  • How PL freak went from huge flop to ‘greatest season ever’ — and $125m question that remains

How PL freak went from huge flop to ‘greatest season ever’ — and $125m question that remains

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah may be producing the greatest individual Premier League season of all-time.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher declared on Sky Sports that Salah is “having a Messi and Ronaldo season”.

Salah’s former Reds teammate Daniel Sturridge said “we’re talking Ballon d’Ors now”.

When you dive into the numbers, it is clear to see why the praise is so high.

The Egyptian has chalked up 41 goals and assists so far this season.

With 11 games to go, he is only six shy of Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.

Salah is leading the golden boot race with 25 goals, six clear of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

The 32-year-old is also the first player in a Premier League season to score 25 or more goals, and provide 15 or more assists.

His goal and assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at City on Sunday made him the first player in Premier League history to have 40 or more goals and assists in a season twice.

It was the 11th time Salah has scored and been a provider in a game this season, the most by a player in one of Europe’s big five leagues since Lionel Messi also did so 11 times in 2014/15.

Salah is putting the ball into the back of net or setting up a teammate to score every 58 minutes, which is better than the current record of 63 set by Manchester City star Erling Haaland in his record-breaking 36-goal 2022/23 season.

This season, Salah is the first player from a Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga or Serie A club to register 50 goals and assists in all competitions.

It is little wonder that Liverpool are 11 points clear on top of the Premier League table, finished top of the table in the Champions League’s league phase and will face Newcastle at Wembley next month in the final of the Carabao Cup.

“This is going to end up being the greatest season we’ve ever seen from an individual,” Carragher said.

“I have no doubt about that and it’s not whether he finishes above those players in terms of numbers, it’s how far – and he sets the bar so high that in the future nobody can ever get there ever again.

“We are seeing something special. We’ve known that over the last seven or eight years, but this an all-time season.”

Salah has produced his heroics among the back drop of intense speculation about his future considering he is out of contract at season’s end.

So too are fellow Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But the trio’s status has not proved to be a distraction for Arne Slot’s side.

Salah has seemingly dropped hints about his future throughout interviews this season, and after the City win he said that he and the other experienced players in the team “need another title”.

Saudi Arabian clubs as well as French behemoth PSG and German giants Bayern Munich have been preparing to swoop on Salah, but reports from Spanish football news outlet Fichajes in recent days suggest that Liverpool may be closing in on a new deal for their superstar.

The Reds “worked intensively to avoid his exit without a fee at the end of the season, and everything indicates that the negotiations have progressed positively,” the report said.

“The possibility of him renewing his contract with the club seemed uncertain a few months ago, but now the scenario has changed and everything points to his relationship with the English team continuing for a longer time.”

Liverpool were reportedly hesitant to meet Salah’s wage demands given his age, but his breathtaking season has supposedly altered that view.

His is currently earning £350,000 a week, and Manchester United great Gary Neville revealed earlier this year that the 32-year-old is looking for a deal of around £400,000 a week over three years — which eqautes to a total contract value of about A$125m.

No matter what happens, Salah will undeniably go down as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, but Carragher believes a contract extension would cement his standing among the Premier League as a whole.

“I think most people would say, when we talk about the Premier League, we probably always put Thierry Henry on top. For me, Mo Salah is definitely second and if he signs another contract, that’s going to be a fairytale finish,” Carragher said.

It is often forgotten that Salah was once a Chelsea flop.

Thirteen appearances Salah made in a blue shirt for just two goals under Jose Mourinho.

The London club even loaned him out to Italian outfits Fiorentina and Roma, where he shone with 35 goals across 81 appearances for the two club, before joining Liverpool in 2017.

“For a start people try to identify me as the coach that sold Salah. I am the coach that bought Salah. It’s completely the wrong idea,” Mourinho recalled in 2019.

“I pushed the club to buy him and at the time we already had fantastic attacking players—Hazard, Willian, we had top talent there. But I told them to buy that kid.

“He was just a lost kid in London. He was a lost kid in a new world.

“We wanted to work him, to become better and better and better. But he was more of the idea of wanting to play and not wait.

“I think that he doesn’t regret that move because everything went well. Everything went well for him and the progression went well for him but, at that moment, he was just a kid with a huge desire to play every week, every minute and we couldn’t give him it.”

The move to Anfield has been an incredibly fruitful one.

Salah is a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and two-time League Cup champion with the Reds.

He is the club’s all-time leading goal-scorer in the Premier League with 180 goals, has won the golden boot three times as well as player of the season in his 32-goal 2017-18 campaign.

He also won the Puskas Award for his stunning strike in the Merseyside Derby that season.

Such an impressive resume drew high praise from Manchester United great Roy Keane when speaking on Sky Sports after the Reds’ win at City.

“I think if you’re going to be successful, any big club, you do need that world class player,” Keane said.

You can have brilliant players around you, but you need that one player who is almost ahead of everyone else just to get you over the line. Make the difference in tight games. Salah does that week-in, week-out.”

Liverpool fans will have an abundance of opportunities to watch Salah showcase his world class skills with seven of their remaining 11 Premier League fixtures this season to be played at Anfield.

As they waltz towards the title, Salah may continue to set records along the way.

There remains a lot to play out with his contract and individual accolades, it will be fascinating to witness whether he remains a Red next season, and how he fares in the Ballon d’Or voting in October.

Liverpool’s huge title statement in City humbling; four goals in 11 mins ignite top-four race: Premier League Wrap

Liverpool took a giant stride towards the Premier League title on Sunday as a 2-0 win over Manchester City opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the table over Arsenal.

Mohamed Salah was again Liverpool’s star performer as he opened the scoring with his 30th goal of the season before setting up Dominik Szoboszlai to double the lead before half-time.

Just days after exiting the Champions League to Real Madrid, this was another sobering defeat for the dethroned English champions, who are now 20 points adrift of the leaders.

So often during Pep Guardiola’s glorious reign, Liverpool have come up just short in English football’s great rivalry of recent years.

However, their time to match Manchester United’s record of 20 English top-flight titles now appears just months away in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

Arsenal’s shock 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday had eased the pressure on Liverpool, that had built after dropping points in two of their last three games at Everton and Aston Villa.

Newcastle hold on in SEVEN goal thriller | 01:18

A trip to the Etihad has for so long been the stiffest test of all, but City’s defensive frailties were easily exposed and they also badly missed the presence of the injured Erling Haaland in attack.

Liverpool, by contrast, had their talisman fit and firing as Salah took his staggering tally this season to 25 goals and 16 assists in 27 Premier League appearances.

The Egyptian fired the visitors in front on 14 minutes thanks to a brilliantly executed set-piece routine.

Alexis Mac Allister’s corner was flicked by Szoboszlai into Salah’s path and his shot deflected off Nathan Ake past the despairing dive of Ederson.

At the other end, City’s own Egyptian international showed his ability to finish, but Omar Marmoush had strayed off-side before being played in by Phil Foden.

City winger Jeremy Doku was skipping past Trent Alexander-Arnold at will, yet the Belgian consistently failed to deliver a telling cross or shot.

Salah was not so forgiving as he raced onto a long ball over the top and teed up Szoboszlai to wrong-foot Ederson.

The final outcome could have been much more humiliating for City had Liverpool had been as accurate on the counter-attack after the break.

Curtis Jones had a third goal ruled out by a VAR review for off-side after Szoboszlai just failed to time his run through the heart of the City defence.

“We didn’t hit the levels today!” | 01:02

Ederson was forced into a stunning save from Luis Diaz and only a brilliant last-ditch tackle from Abdukodir Khusanov denied Szoboszlai a second.

Marmoush scored a hat-trick in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Newcastle and remained a lively threat as he flashed another effort across the front of Alisson Becker’s goal.

But City lacked the end product to make nearly 70 per cent possession count. Despite an eighth league defeat of the season, Guardiola’s men remain in fourth and will be confident of securing their place in the Champions League next season with a top-five finish likely to be enough.

However, after an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles, City look like yesterday’s team with Liverpool now champions in waiting.

    – ‘We need another title’, says Salah after ‘special’ Man City win –

Mohamed Salah said Liverpool’s veterans need another Premier League title after inspiring a 2-0 win at Manchester City to surge 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Salah was central to a statement win for the Reds as he opened the scoring and then teed up Dominik Szoboszlai to double Liverpool’s lead before half-time.

Arne Slot’s men are in a commanding position to secure a record-equalling 20th English top flight title, although second-placed Arsenal have a game in hand.

City, who have won the last four Premier League titles, are now 20 points behind the leaders down in fourth.

    Spurs win 3rd straight – Gunners choke | 03:05

“It is incredible. It is a very hard place to come and play here,” said Salah after Liverpool’s first league win at the Etihad for a decade.

“They are a tough team and they have an incredible manager I am glad in the end we won the game. It is special. Especially when you are in the title race, it is incredible.

“Hopefully we keep calm because sometimes the pressure gets to us.”

Salah took his tally for an incredible season to 30 goals and 21 assists and said he is enjoying his football more than ever despite speculation over his future.

The 32-year-old, captain Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were all part of the Liverpool side that ended a 30-year wait to win the title in 2020.

And Salah reiterated his belief that they need another Premier League winner’s medal to burnish their legacy.

“Maybe people prefer my first seasons or now but I prefer now because winning the league, helping the young players, it is special,” he added.

“We need another title. Me and the big guys in the team, we need another title.”

    – Forest felled by Isak as Newcastle bolster top four bid –

Newcastle blew Nottingham Forest away with four goals in 11 minutes as Alexander Isak’s double inspired a vital 4-3 win in the race to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

Eddie Howe’s side recovered from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s early opener to run riot with a first half goal spree at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Lewis Miley bagged Newcastle’s equaliser, sparking an astonishing spell of dominance as Jacob Murphy put the hosts ahead.

Isak netted twice in less than two minutes to reach 50 Premier League goals and leave Forest in tatters.

The Sweden striker has 19 league goals this season, taking him level with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in second place behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in this season’s scoring chart.

Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates scored for Forest in the second half, but it was too late for an incredible escape act.

After three defeats in their previous four league games, fifth-placed Newcastle are back in the hunt to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.

The Magpies are behind fourth-placed Manchester City on goal difference, with third-placed Forest just three points above them.

“I’m trying to control my thoughts and stay positive. We won the game and that’s what we needed to do,” Howe said.

“It was a great performance in the first half, then a couple of frailties showed in terms of defending set plays.

“We can reflect on that. There are things we can do better. We pride ourselves on getting the details right.”

    Leicester lose 6th straight game | 01:21

Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo added: “In the first half I didn’t recognise our team. In the second half we were much better.

“We made mistakes. It was two totally different halves. We started well and then they just rolled over us.” Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made his first league start since early December in place of Martin Dubravka.

But Pope was partially at fault as Newcastle gifted Forest the lead in sloppy style after just six minutes Jacob Murphy lost the ball in his own half as Hudson-Odoi pressured the Newcastle midfielder into conceding possession.

Hudson-Odoi wasn’t closed down quickly enough by Dan Burn and the winger unloaded a powerful low drive that caught Pope out of position as it flashed into the net.

Miley ensured Newcastle’s strong response to that early setback was rewarded in the 23rd minute.

    – Newcastle hold on –

With Forest’s usually rock-solid defence slow to react, Miley had time to control Lewis Hall’s pass inside the penalty area and drill his shot through a sea of legs past unsighted keeper Matz Sels.

Murphy made amends for his earlier mistake to put Howe’s team ahead two minutes after Miley’s equaliser.

Hall’s driving run was the catalyst as the defender took Isak’s return pass and hit a deflected cross that looped over Sels for Murphy to bundle home from virtually on the goal-line.

Newcastle were firing on all cylinders and they struck again in the 33rd minute. Ola Aina used his arm to block Hall’s cross, conceding a penalty that Isak dispatched past Sels with an audacious lofted effort that left the keeper sprawled on his back as he tried in vain to claw it out.

Forest had no answer to Newcastle’s intensity and it was no surprise when they conceded a fourth just 60 seconds later.

Joe Willock raced unchecked through the Forest midfield and slipped his pass to Isak, whose shot from 12 yards took a deflection on its way past the wrong-footed Sels.

Newcastle eased up in the second half and Milenkovic reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute, flicking Chris Wood’s cross past Pope from close-range.

When Yates steered home in the 90th minute, a nervous hush descended on St James’ Park, but Newcastle held on by their fingernails.

Ange’s path to trophy revealed; heavyweights cop brutal fixtures in Europa League draw

Ange Postecoglou’s path to deliver a trophy to Tottenham has become clearer, after the Spurs were confirmed to play AZ Alkmaar in the next stage of the Europa League.

Manchester United were drawn to play Real Sociedad of Spain in the last 16 of this season’s Europa League, while Rangers will take on Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Ruben Amorim’s United are struggling in the Premier League this season but finished third in the league phase of the Europa League.

They will travel to San Sebastian for the first leg on March 6 before the return a week later against a Real Sociedad side who reached this stage after beating Midtjylland of Denmark in the play-off round.

The clubs have met several times in European competition in recent years, with United winning a Europa League knockout phase play-off tie in 2021 before both sides each won away from home in the group stage in 2022/23. They also faced off in the Champions League group stage in 2013.

Whoever wins will advance to a last-eight tie against either Lyon or FCSB. The Romanians lost 2-0 at home to United in their last game in the group phase last month.

“It was everything” – Spurs sweep Man U | 01:49

Fenerbahce will welcome beaten 2022 finalists Rangers to Istanbul for the first leg of their tie in a competition coach Mourinho won with United in 2017. He also won its predecessor, the UEFA Cup, as Porto boss in 2003.

If Fenerbahce win, Mourinho could come up in the quarter-finals against one of his old clubs in Roma, with whom he won the Europa Conference League in 2022.

However, Claudio Ranieri’s Roma face a tough task in the last 16 against Athletic Bilbao, who are determined to go all the way to this season’s final, which will be played at their San Mames home on May 21.

‘Bigger club with bigger pressure” | 00:46

Spurs will go to the Netherlands for the first leg of their last-16 tie against AZ, who they defeated 1-0 in the league phase in October.

If they win, Ange Postecoglou’s team could be back in the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, with the victors in that tie playing either Ajax or 2022 tournament winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spurs and Manchester United cannot meet until the final, but the Old Trafford club could face either Mourinho’s Fenerbahce or Rangers in the last four.

Last season’s Conference League winners Olympiakos of Greece will play Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt in the last 16, for the right to take on either Lazio — who finished first in the league phase — or Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic in the quarters.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool finished first in the 36-team league phase of the competition to qualify directly for this stage, while PSG finished 15th and had to come through a two-legged play-off tie in which they crushed fellow French side Brest 10-0 on aggregate.

The first leg will take place at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Wednesday, March 5, with the return at Anfield six days later, on Tuesday, March 11.

The clubs last met in the Champions League in the group stage in 2018/19, when PSG won 2-1 at home after Liverpool triumphed 3-2 in England.

The only previous knockout tie between the sides came in the semi-finals of the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup in 1997, when PSG won 3-2 on aggregate before losing the final to Barcelona.

Liverpool are currently eight points clear of Arsenal at the top of the English Premier League having played a game more than their closest rivals, while Luis Enrique’s PSG are unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season and sit 10 points clear at the summit.

With the draw being made up to and including the semi-finals, PSG and Liverpool know the winner of their tie will face either Club Brugge or Aston Villa in the last eight.

Red card awarded for bizarre brain snap | 00:30

That raises the possibility of an all-English quarter-final between the teams who succeeded each other as European Cup winners in the early 1980s.

Villa will face Club Brugge seeking revenge for their 1-0 defeat against the same opponents in Belgium in the league phase in November.

Real, fresh from eliminating Manchester City in the play-offs, will be at home in the first leg against Atletico on March 4.

The rivals from the Spanish capital met in the competition in four straight seasons in the last decade, with Real coming out on top every time.

They won the finals of 2014 and 2016, as well as in the quarter-finals in 2015 and in the semi-finals in 2017.

“It’s an amazing tie, and we are ready for it,” insisted Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who was in charge for all of the past Champions League meetings between the sides.

“We have to play two magnificent games because of the quality of our opponents, but we have full confidence in our players and their ability to overcome all difficulties,” said Emilio Butragueno, the former Real player who is now the club’s director of institutional relations.

The Gunners, who came third in the league phase, will be coming up against a club they faced in the group stage of last season’s Champions League — Mikel Arteta’s team won 4-0 at home before drawing 1-1 in the Netherlands.

“We’ve played against them, they are a really good team. We have experienced it and it will be really difficult,” Arteta said of the reigning Dutch champions.

“We know what we are facing. When you are at this stage every team is really, really good. When the time comes we will be ready for it.”

Another standout tie will see Bayern Munich, the current Bundesliga leaders, take on reigning German champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen, coached by former Bayern midfielder Xabi Alonso, are unbeaten in the last six meetings of the clubs, including a 1-0 win in the German Cup earlier this season. The teams have never previously met in a European tie.

Feyenoord, the 1970 European Cup winners, will play Italian champions Inter Milan, their reward for knocking out AC Milan in the play-offs. The winners of that tie will face Bayern or Leverkusen in the last eight.

‘Bigger club with bigger pressure” | 00:46

It is the first time two Dutch clubs have been in the last 16 since 2005/06. Current La Liga leaders Barcelona will face Benfica, who they defeated 5-4 away in Lisbon last month on their way to finishing second in the league phase.

Last season’s beaten finalists Borussia Dortmund will take on French side Lille. The semi-final draw raises the possibility of last-four showdowns between Liverpool and Arsenal, or between Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid and his old club PSG.

Barcelona are on the same side of the draw as Bayern and Leverkusen. This season’s final takes place in Munich on May 31.

Champions League draw serves up a Madrid derby, Bayern vs. Leverkusen and Liverpool-PSG

AMadrid derby. A German classic. A rare meeting between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Champions League got more heavyweight clashes when the draw for the round of 16 was made Friday.

Pascal Siakam shows love for Real Madrid

Defending champion Real Madrid’s reward for ousting 2023 title winner Manchester City is two city derbies against Atletico Madrid – the team it beat in the final in 2014 and 2016.

Bayern Munich was paired with Bayer Leverkusen – the Bundesliga leader against its defending champion, who played a tight 0-0 draw just last weekend.

Liverpool was the top-seeded team in the draw after finishing first in the 36-team standings last month but still got a tough assignment as the Premier League leader was paired with No. 15 seed PSG.

Liverpool and PSG have never met in knockout games in the Champions League or the old European Cup. Their previous meetings were in the group stage in 2018-19, trading home wins in a season that ended with Liverpool winning its sixth European Cup title.

The first-leg games will be played March 4-5, with the return games one week later.

Also in the draw, No. 2 seed Barcelona was paired with Benfica – which it beat 5-4 in Lisbon one month ago – Arsenal will face PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan plays Feyenoord.

Club Brugge, which got into the knockout stage in the 24th and final qualification place, will face Aston Villa, which it already beat in November. Borussia Dortmund will play Lille.

The Madrid and German matchups were not possible in the old Champions League format where teams from the same country could not face each other in the round of 16. The new tennis-style seeded bracket allows for those derbies, and for teams to reunite after already playing each other in the league phase of the competition.

‘Un-Australian’ truth that hits hard; Fowler puzzle Matildas still can’t solve: Talking Pts

The Matildas have been given a reality check just over 12-months out from the Asian Cup on home soil with their defending in a 4-0 defeat to Japan at the SheBelieves Cup labelled “un-Australian” by interim coach Tom Sermanni.

Watch the biggest Aussie sports & the best from overseas LIVE on Kayo. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.

The gulf in class between the two sides in Houston could not have been more evident as Australia succumbed to its largest ever losing margin to its biggest regional rival.

If they’re to lift the Asian Cup next year then improvement in every facet of the game will be needed. This performance will either prove to be just a bad day at the office or an almighty warning sign.

The only positive from a dire outing is that the flaws have been ruthlessly exposed now when there’s still more than enough time to turn things around.

‘DIFFICULT TO WATCH’: Matildas torn to shreds over ‘unacceptable’ bloodbath

    ‘UN-AUSTRALIAN’ DEFENDING

It was tough watching for interim coach Tom Sermanni.

This was the seventh match of his third stint in charge of the national side and it ended with the biggest defeat of that period.

The 70-year-old has a unique way of delivering bad news in a polite way, but even his assessment of the performance against Japan landed like a sledgehammer.

There are few things that hit home more than being labelled “un-Australian,” but there could be no other assessment of the Matildas effort without the ball in his 145th match at the helm of the Matildas.

“We want to be a team that is hard to beat and to be honest today, we really gave up some soft goals,” Sermanni said.

“I just felt some of the goals that we gave up were very poor, and that’s kind of un-Australian.”

    A CLASH OF STYLES

The opening five minutes of the match told the story of the entire game.

Japan retained possession with poise, patience and a huge dose of technical skill. The Matildas, in contrast, routinely turned the ball over on the back of a relentless and organised Japan press.

It was 2-0 at half-time but could’ve easily have been more and Japan’s third goal in the 52nd minute came off the back of a free-flowing 14-pass move that culminated with Maika Hamano being able to almost walk the ball into the back of the net.

“Sometimes you just have to sit back say ‘you know what, we were just played off the field today’ and that’s what we were,” Sermanni said.

“They were quicker to every ball, they kept possession fantastically; when we tried to press, they broke out of the press, when we sat back they managed to play through us so sometimes you have one of those games.

“I’d like to give you X, Y and Z as to why it happened, but in reality, they were just very, very good today and we were a bit off.”

Strangely, the Matildas were second best when it came to aerial challenges as well.

Japan’s fourth goal, which came via a Moeka Minami header, was one of many duels Australia lost in the air. It was uncharacteristic to say the least. They’re moments that even on a bad day the Matildas are usually in control of.

“I just felt some of the goals that we gave up were very poor,” was Sermanni’s assessment.

Physicality and intensity are the fallbacks when tactically things aren’t going to plan for Australia, but those attributes are only able to be applied when you can get near your opponent. That was something that proved out of reach.

The Matildas gameplan seemed to revolve around trying to win possession off long balls and playing off the back of that higher up the pitch and out of danger.

Japan produced a masterclass that was in complete contrast.

Their technical ability allowed them to keep the ball for long periods of time, shifting the Matildas defensive formation around until an opening appeared which they exposed with efficiency.

Sermanni, when asked where it all went wrong, didn’t try to deflect or make excuses.

“We were outplayed football wise, we were outplayed physically, we were outplayed, I think, mentally and outplayed in our decision making.”

    ONE SHOT FOR THE MATCH

The statistical summation of the game doesn’t make for pretty reading for Australia.

The lone shot at goal came in the 87th minute and off the boot of left back Charli Grant, who was a second-half substitute for captain Steph Catley.

The attempt cannoned into the crossbar, but as spectacular as it would’ve been had it nestled into the back of the net, it still would’ve been little more than a consolation goal.

Grant’s effort came on the end of a nine pass move that followed a near miss-kick from Australia goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold that offered Japan the chance to make it 5-0.

It was a rare moment of cohesion from a side that looked largely disjointed.

Japan finished with 18 shots and 8 on target.

    MARY FOWLER

Fowler is one of the most technically gifted players in the Australian set-up but finding ways to get her into the game in green and gold has been problematic.

She came into this tournament with three goals and five assists from her last four games for club side Manchester City. It gave her the honour of being the first player in the history of the Women’s Super League to record at least two goal involvements in four straight matches.

This loss doesn’t fall on Fowler’s shoulders by any stretch, but the question of how to ensure she can have the most impact on matches remains unsolved.

The 22-year-old was able to get on the ball more in the second half, but a lack of possession from Australia more generally, hindered her ability to hurt Japan.

A fully firing Fowler isn’t the answer to all of Australia’s problems, but it certainly is part of the jigsaw.

    THE SELECTION TABLE

Sermanni named a full-strength side to face Japan.

If this was the Asian Cup final then the team the Matildas would put out would be almost the same.

There’d be a lineball call on whether Sharn Freier, Kaitlyn Torpey or Tameka Yallop started on the left, but apart from that the starting eleven would be identical if everyone was fit and available for selection.

A performance that led to a defeat like this with an experimental side would be understandable.

This result against Australia’s best possible side is problematic.

“It was a pretty huge wake-up call I think,” Sermanni said.

    THE NEW KIT

On a day when Football Australia launched its new kit there was a frustrating sense of familiarity to the Matildas’ struggles in possession against a highly technical opponent.

That had nothing to do with the strip of course.

The jersey has been met with mixed reviews online, but Australian football fans might just find it grows on them.

Some kits look better on the field with shorts and socks included than hanging on the rack at your local retail outlet.

This one has the feel of being a collector’s item in 20-years-time, similar to the jersey worn by the Socceroos between 1990 and 1993 which is sought after right now.

    Give it time.

    WHAT’S NEXT?

The Matildas have just three days to learn and move on from this result before running into tournament hosts America in Glendale, Arizona on Monday morning (AEDT).

Sermanni, who is holding the fort while Football Australia continues its search for Tony Gustavsson’s full-time replacement, has his work cut out for him.

“As a professional you need to bounce back after bad results and this will be a good test and probably a benchmark for the team to see if we’re able to do that in the next two games,” he said.

As affable as the interim is, he has left his players in no doubt as to what is now required.

Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth battling the powerhouses for a Champions League place. No one predicted that.

There is only a third of the Premier League season remaining and the race for the top four has arguably never been more intriguing.

Liverpool appears set to have one hand on the title, eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand, but the next rung down is where things get fascinating.

Nottingham Forest third, Manchester City fourth and Bournemouth fifth.

The latter jumped into the top five after Forest, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle all dropped points last weekend.

Forest have won 14, drawn five and lost six, while Bournemouth have won 12, drawn seven and lost six.

It reads like a Forest or Cherries fan plugging away on Football Manager for hours to get their team to dizzying heights, but supporters in England’s midlands and on the south coast better stop pinching themselves.

They are not dreaming. This is real.

The struggles of regular top six clubs Manchester United and Tottenham, along with Champions League Round of 16 bound Villa slipping in the league, presented opportunities, and Forest and Bournemouth have snatched them with both hands.

    The Forest story is famous.

A powerhouse decades ago with back-to-back European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980 under legendary manager Brian Clough.

A year before their first continental breakthrough, Forest won the English top flight and they were runners-up the season after.

But following relegation from the Premier League in 1999, they fell into the football abyss.

Forest did not return to the Premier League until 2022 and barely avoided relegation by finishing 16th and 17th in their first two seasons back in the top tier.

Bournemouth were promoted from the Championship in the same season as Forest and initially found themselves in the bottom half of the table too.

A 12th place finish last season was preceded by coming 15th in their prior campaign.

Unlike Forest, however, Bournemouth is not a club with a rich pedigree.

Its first season in the Premier League came under now Newcastle boss Eddie Howe in 2015/16 and a ninth-place finish in their second season was the club’s best result in the top flight.

Years of mediocrity did not show too many hints of a breakout campaign in Bournemouth’s case, nor a stunning revival in Forest’s case.

But the dream of Champions League nights at the City Ground or the Vitality Stadium is alive and well, and this how they have put themselves in the hunt for midweek action against the best clubs in Europe.

Here is how they did it.

    FOREST’S KIWI FRONTMAN

Like Forest’s, Chris Wood’s story is a fairytale.

The 33-year-old captain of the New Zealand national team has remarkably played for 12 different clubs in England.

He even went through a three-year period where he was sent out on loan six times by West Bromwich Albion.

Wood bounced around the various tiers of English football after moving to the UK as a 16-year-old to chase his dreams, and now the Forest talisman is a bonified star.

The six-foot three striker is third in the golden boot race.

He has netted 18 goals so far this campaign, highlighted by a hat-trick in Forest’s 7-0 rout of Brighton earlier this month, to only sit behind Mohamed Salah (24) and Erling Haaland (19).

It is his best Premier League season, and he still has 13 more opportunities to add to his tally.

“When they talk about Mo Salah and Erling Haaland – they mention Chris Wood in the same breath – you can’t compete with that,” Wood’s high school coach former New Zealand international Mike Groom told Sky Sports.

“It’s theatrical, it’s magical, it’s the stuff of dreams and kids’ dreams are fuelled by those images and that exposure.

“We’re still a rugby-playing country, but Chris is single-handedly beginning to change that.”

Wood’s height automatically makes him an aerial threat as a target man, he has scored six headed goals this season, the most in the league, but his finishing is still underrated.

    In fact, it is lethal.

Wood has had 28 shots on target for the season, and scoring 18 of them makes him the most effective of any of the Premier League’s top strikers in front of goal.

New Zealand’s record goal scorer, who is also nearing the record for most appearances for his country, has also endeared himself to football fans because he is not blessed with all the attributes of the likes of Salah and Haaland.

    The biggest difference is pace.

Wood is not a quick player, and the fact he lacks speed seemingly contradicts the fact that Forest prefers to play counterattacking football.

But he makes it work by timing his runs perfectly and seizing big moments.

In some ways, it makes little sense but so has his entire football journey.

“It’s definitely exceeded what I dreamt of when I was a kid and hopefully, I’ve got a lot more I can achieve to make it an even better dream,” Wood told Sky Sports.

“I want to keep the path open for New Zealanders to hopefully make it into the Premier League one day – I want to grow that generation of new kids wanting to play football and wanting to dream of doing the best they can and ending up in the biggest league.”

    BOURNEMOUTH CREATE CHAOS

Bournemouth’s blueprint in attack is not dissimilar to Forest’s.

The two sides are comfortably the Premier League leaders for playing fast and direct football.

They sit back and defend resolutely, and when they win the ball back, they are off to the races.

Once the ball is in their attacking half, they press high and try to force turnovers in dangerous areas.

It makes for exciting games to watch, and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been heaped with praise this season for his tactics.

“I sometimes value much more a player carrying the ball and forcing things to happen,” Iraola said in an interview with The Independent.

“We have to prepare [positional] patterns, but we cannot just prioritise them. If you can see that you don’t have a teammate ahead, forget about the pattern, just drive the ball and try to force things to happen. I want him to attack first.”

Meanwhile premierleague.com’s Alex Keble summed up the essence of their play as “disruption”.

“High risk, high reward: that’s the mentality of Iraola and his team, whether in hounding the ball with an all-action and full-pitch press or piercing opposition lines with sharp vertical football and attacking overloads,” Keble said.

“Perhaps the best word to encapsulate their tactical approach is “disruption”.

“Disrupt the other team’s play with furious pressing, and disrupt the expected rhythms of your own attack with improvisations and surges forward in high numbers.”

That philosophy has brought out the best in Justin Kluivert, who has scored 11 goals so far this campaign, four more than last season.

The Dutchman has really found his groove in the Premier League in recent times.

He was player of the month in January for scoring five goals and recording two assists in four appearances, of which Bournemouth won three and drew one.

The highlight of his season so far was a hat-trick, and an assist, in a 4-1 away win against Newcastle who were previously unbeaten in nine matches before that January fixture.

That victory was followed up by a 5-0 victory against Forest, where Kluivert contributed a goal and an assist to help end Forest’s eight-game unbeaten run.

Knocking off several in-form teams led to Iraola taking home manager of the month, and David Brooks’ stunning volley against Everton made it a clean sweep of the awards by winning goal of the month.

All of that came amid a length injury list, including strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal.

But Kluivert’s breakout combined with the superb form of fellow attackers Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo, who have scored seven goals apiece this season, has prevented injuries from being an excuse.

No matter who is on the sidelines, once Bournemouth wins the ball back there are simply too many runners for opponents to attack.

Remarkably, one would expect such a style of play to make them vulnerable at the back.

But Iraola’s side do not play a high line, and they have the equal-third best defensive record in the league, alongside Forest, conceding 29 goals so far. Only Arsenal and Liverpool have been stingier at the back.

They key has been the centre back pairing of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi, a combination Iraola landed on during the season.

In the 13 games they have started together, Bournemouth have lost once, to Liverpool.

Zabaryni is the rock that has played every minute this season, while 19-year-old Huijsen has been a revelation.

“Huijsen is undoubtedly the star of the two,” Keble wrote.

“Signed from Juventus for around £15 million last summer, his strength in the air, composure in possession, and – crucially – assertive front-foot style have catapulted Bournemouth to new heights.”

    FOREST’S ELITE DEFENCE

ESPN’s Bruce Schoenfeld summed up Forest’s defensive brilliance in writing that manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s “football has hardly changed even though instead of a relegation battle, he has European qualification in his sights”.

Forest defends like their life depends on it.

They have comfortably made more clearances than any other team, including the equal most amount of clearances off the line.

They are level with Liverpool for the most number of clean sheets with ten.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels has punched away the aerial more than anyone else.

    They are desperate.

And they are bringing an enormous amount of pride to the club’s greats.

“I haven’t watched a better pairing at the back than Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic in my 50 years of watching Forest,” former England and Forest midfielder Steve Hodge said on BBC Radio last month.

“I really mean that – pound for pound what they are as footballers and as a pair,” he added. “They have everything. As a pair, they complement each other perfectly and they both seem to be calm characters even under severe pressure.”

Nikola Milenkovic of Nottingham Forest celebrates victory during the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion at the City Ground in Nottingham, England, on February 1, 2025. (Photo by MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

Milenkovic joined from Fiorentina last summer and the 31-year-old Serbian is in many pundits’ team of the season so far.

He is an old-fashioned, no-nonsense centre back whose heading ability has led to him scoring two goals as well as clearing many attacking threats.

But in the coming games, Forest face arguably the biggest defensive test of the season.

Away at Newcastle, home to Arsenal and home to Manchester City are their next three league games.

They passed with flying colours earlier in the season, defeating Liverpool at Anfield and taking a point from them at home.

That shows that there is little to doubt that Forest’s steeliness will remain.

    BOURNEMOUTH’S EXCELLENT ROAD RECORD

A major part of Bournemouth’s success has been their impressive away record.

The Cherries have won six, drawn four and lost three of their matches on the road this season, including going unbeaten in their last seven away games.

That streak has included a pair of 2-2 draws against rivals for the European places Chelsea and Fulham, as well as the Newcastle win mentioned earlier.

Their most recent away win was a 3-1 win against cellar dwellers Southampton in a south coast derby, and post-match Iraola identified fast starts as the reason for their away success.

“I think it’s key, especially when you play away,” he said.

“I think we are having good starts. I remember last games, Newcastle away, Everton the other day.

“Even the two goals in 16 minutes, but in the first minute I think we had two corners for us.

“It’s a good start and a message that we are coming here and we want to win this game and we are not happy with the 0-0 and we want things to happen quickly.

“Also, I think they are a team that now is aggressive in the press. I think there were spaces behind them. There were spaces behind us.

“The game could go very open and I’m happy, especially first half, I think we controlled the game very well.”

Their ability to get results on the road will be severely tested later in the season as they visit Arsenal and Manchester City in the final four games of their campaign.

They could be vital to their European hopes.

Mbapp hat trick for Real Madrid dumps Man City out of Champions League

Kylian Mbapp scored a hat trick, Erling Haaland stayed on the bench injured and Real Madrid dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League on Wednesday.

Mbapp’s stellar trio of goals in the fourth, 33rd and 61st minutes in a 3-1 win padded Madrid’s lead to 6-3 on aggregate score over the 2023 champion in their two-leg knockout playoff.

One superstar striker was watched by another from the sidelines. Haaland was not fit to start for an ultimately overmatched Man City because of a knee injury suffered late in a Premier League game Saturday.

Paris Saint-Germain beat French rival Brest 7-0, to run up a 10-0 aggregate score, and will play either Liverpool or Barcelona in the round of 16.

PSV Eindhoven and Juventus were heading to extra time with the Dutch side leading 2-1 to level the aggregate score at 3-3. United States international Timothy Weah scored for Juventus.

In the early game Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund started with a 3-0 lead at home to Sporting Lisbon and was barely stretched in a 0-0 draw. Sporting’s Champions League campaign imploded after coach Ruben Amorim left for Manchester United in November.

    Round of 16 draw

Real Madrid, PSG, Dortmund and PSV/Juventus join Bayern Munich, Benfica, Club Brugge and Feyenoord, which all advanced Tuesday, as playoff round winners who will be unseeded teams in Friday’s draw. They will host the first-leg games on March 4-5.

The top eight in the 36-team standings three weeks ago – Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, Aston Villa – skipped the playoffs round and are seeded in the round of 16 draw. They host second legs on March 11-12.

The round of 16 is in a new, tennis-like seeded bracket for the knockout stage in the expanded competition format.

Madrid, as the 11th-place team in the standings and No. 11 seed already knew its next opponent would be Atletico or Leverkusen, who respectively placed fifth and sixth.

Top-seeded Liverpool will play No. 15 PSG or No. 16 Benfica.
