When and where will MS Dhoni play his final game for CSK in IPL 2023?

Indian cricketing legend and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is all set to play in his final Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

During the T20 league last year, after Chennai failed to reach the playoffs, the veteran keeper-batter was asked if he would be seen in action during IPL 2023. He confirmed that he would return for next season.

Now, according to reports, the 41-year-old is all set to play in his farewell IPL season. A CSK official confirmed the development and told InsideSport:

“Yes, it will be MS’s last season as a player. That is what we know so far. But of course, it’s his decision. He hasn’t officially communicated to the management that he will go into retirement. It is a special occasion for all CSK fans as IPL returns to Chennai. But it will be a sad moment if Dhoni plays his final season.”

MSD gave up the captaincy of the Chennai Super Kings last year, passing on the baton to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. However, Dhoni was made skipper again midway through the season after Jadeja quit as his personal performance was severely affected due to the additional responsibility.

On Dhoni’s Last Farewell match, i want ‘The Guard of Honour’ given by CSK Stalwarts like Faf, Mathew Hayden,Watson,Suresh Raina,Dwayne Bravo, Brendon McCullum,Dwayne Smith, Murali Vijay,Ravichandran Ashwin, Badrinath ,Albie Morkel, Bollinger Make this happen Leo @ChennaiIPL💛 https://t.co/uDyWurHWff

The Indian legend has been retained as CSK captain for the IPL 2023 season as well.

Will MS Dhoni play his last IPL match on May 14?

According to reports, Dhoni is likely to play his last IPL match for CSK against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Chennai on May 14. This will be CSK’s 13th match in the league stage. Chennai’s last game in the league stage will be against the Delhi Capitals (DC), but that’s an away encounter.

While reports are stating that the May 14 game against KKR could be MSD’s last IPL match, it is unlikely that he will not play in the playoffs if CSK qualifies for the same.

As per the IPL 2023 schedule, 70 league-stage matches will be played across 12 venues over 52 days. The schedule and venues for the playoffs and the final will be announced later.

IPL 2023 will begin with a blockbuster clash between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31.

    MS Dhoni’s IPL stats

Having made his debut in the inaugural edition in 2008, MSD has played 234 matches in which he has scored 4978 runs at an average of 39.20 and a strike rate of 135.20, with 24 half-centuries.

His best of 84* came off 48 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the 2019 edition. Despite MSD’s heroics, CSK lost the game by one run.

New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson ruled out of England Tests; doubtful to play for CSK in IPL 2023

New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson will miss the upcoming Test series against England due to a back stress fracture and is doubtful to represent the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Jamieson, 28, has been out of action since June last year, and the reports of his scans ahead of the opening Test in Mount Maunganui has revealed the recurrence of stress fracture. So now, he will return to Christchurch for further assessment.

“It’s really gutting for Kyle to have this happen after he’d put so much hard work in to getting himself back on the park,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said in his official statement. “Since the injury in June we’ve certainly taken a cautious approach to managing his return with regular monitoring by our medical staff which has included scans.

“While Kyle’s not feeling any pain, the evidence is pretty clear he has a stress-fracture and so he’ll return to Christchurch today and have a CT scan on Friday before we decide on the next steps.”

In the mini-auction for IPL 2023, the four-time champions CSK put their weight behind the acquisition of all-rounders in their squad. They roped in Jamieson at a base price of INR 1 crore, but his injury has forced CSK to address the succession issue. They will have to look for Jamieson’s replacement as soon as possible.

The IPL 2023 is likely to begin in the first week of April, i.e. after the conclusion of Women’s Premier League (WPL).

IPL 2023: 3 players who returned to their former franchises

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

The IPL 2023 auction witnessed many teams trying to fill their gaps from the last edition. Most of them succeeded in their attempt, while others missed the opportunity to find the missing piece of the puzzle. Furthermore, few franchises targeted player whom they released ahead of the auction in their bid to secure their services at a lower price.

Some of the teams took active interest in securing the services of the players who represented them in the past or could not be a part of the 2022 season. It was also due to the respective players’ form and team combinations, which might help them to get favourable results in the forthcoming edition.

Here are three players who returned to former franchises:

    1. Sam Curran

One of the finest all-rounders in white-ball cricket, Sam Curran created history in the IPL 2023 auction as he emerged as the costliest buy in the tournament history. Curran’s former franchise Punjab Kings shelled out INR 18.5 crore to bring back the talented Englishman to the squad. The 24-year-old represented Punjab Kings in the 2019 season, and then played for CSK in 2020 and 2021.

One of the reasons for such a massive bid for Curran was his performance in the T20 World Cup 2022, where he bagged 13 wickets and was named the Player of the Tournament, helping England lift the title.

In nine games for PBKS, Curran bagged 10 wickets and scored 95 runs. After releasing Odean Smith ahead of the upcoming season, PBKS certainly needed a fast-bowling all-rounder and Curran is just the perfect fit for the role.

  • IPL 2023: 5 Teams that can target Ben Stokes in the upcoming mini-auction

IPL 2023: 5 Teams that can target Ben Stokes in the upcoming mini-auction

Exactly a week from now, i.e. on December 23, the much-awaited mini-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is set to take place in Kochi. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the final list of players (405) who will go under the hammer.

Among the big list of players, one cricketer who is going to trigger a bidding war in the auction is England’s star, Ben Stokes. The top-quality all-rounder pulled out from the last edition of the cash-rich league to focus on his national duty.

There is no denying that Stokes will cause an intense bidding war, as every franchise will look to rope in the kind of all-rounder he is. Additionally, the Christchurch-born will also be an ideal choice for franchises looking for a captain in the upcoming season of the lucrative league. On that note, let’s have a look at five franchises that can target Stokes in the forthcoming mini-auction:

    1.) Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have released several players, including all-rounders and their captain Kane Williamson. Hence, the 2016 champions will be looking for one quality cricketer who can fill both requirements and Stokes, by all margins, fits right in.

The advantage Stokes brings is that he can bat in the top order and be a finisher as the situation require, and the Sunrisers need such a cricketer. Since the Orange Army has the biggest purse, fans can expect them to go at full flow to acquire the services of England’s Test captain.

    2.) Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have a similar story to the Sunrisers. They also got rid of quite a few players, including their skipper Mayank Agarwal, who didn’t impress at all both with the bat and his captaincy. Though, Punjab don’t need a captain as they have already named Shikhar Dhawan as the leader of the side.

PBKS had Odean Smith in the previous season, but he was not consistent, and therefore the Mohali-based franchise can target Stokes to be a finisher. Interestingly, Punjab already have two Englishmen in the form of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, and with Stokes’ inclusion, PBKS will be able to solve their top, middle and lower-order problem.

    3.) Rajasthan Royals

Stokes was part of Rajasthan Royals (RR) along with his English teammate Jos Buttler, and there will be no surprise if the Royals would again go for Stoksey in the mini-auction. During his stint with the franchise, the 31-year-old scored 604 runs in 31 games and picked up 16 wickets for the side.

The only recognised batter Rajasthan have down the order is Riyan Parag, therefore, the 2008 IPL Winners need a high-quality all-rounder, and Stokes will fulfil all their requirements. Also, the Royals have a relatively inexperienced bowling attack, and having Stokes in the side will help the young pacers to learn how to bowl in crunch situations.

    4.) Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have released Jason Holder from their squad, and without a question, they will look for an all-rounder. In that regard, Stokes could be an ideal choice. Although LSG have the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Deepak Hooda, having Stokes in the side would make Lucknow look a really dangerous side.

Stokes is a ferocious striker of the ball and a remarkable hitter with the bat, and that’s exactly what Lucknow need to make a strong team. Since LSG have INR 23.35 crore in their purse, they can try hard to sign Stokes and add depth to their side.

    5.) Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) didn’t have a fruitful campaign in the last edition, as they could only record four victories and finished the season as the ninth-ranked team. Ahead of the 2022 edition, CSK made all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja the captain, but he couldn’t do well and relinquished the post, giving it back to MS Dhoni.

Further, the Super Kings don’t have a quality bowling attack and a pace-bowling all-rounder as well. Since Stokes has the ability to do well with both bat and ball and can be a leader of the side, the 4-time IPL champions could well bid for the English superstar. CSK have INR 20.45 crores in their purse, and they can push a little further to acquire the services of Stokes.

IPL 2023: 5 franchises that might target Jason Holder at auction

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

Jason Holder has been a proven performer in the T20 circuit. The Barbados-born has featured in 200 matches in the shortest format and picked up 197 wickets at an economy of 7.86. On the batting front, he has scored 1758 runs at a strike rate of 126.38. The 31-year-old has also displayed his all-round prowess in the international arena. He has bagged 51 wickets in 49 T20Is at an economy of 8.17 and scored 385 runs at a strike rate of 120.68.

Lucknow Super Giants went all guns blazing to sign the West Indies all-rounder at the 2022 mega auction and eventually grabbed him for INR 8.75 crore. Holder played 12 games for Lucknow and took 14 wickets at an economy of 9.42. On the batting front, he scored 58 runs at a strike rate of 131.82.

Given the ace all-rounder was not able to perform as per his lofty standards, Lucknow released him from their squad. So, Holder will go under the hammer at the IPL 2023 auction. He brings balance to the side due to his all-round prowess and many franchises could be eager to pick him at the upcoming marquee event.

Here are five franchises that might target Jason Holder at auction:

    5. Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings assembled a power-packed side for the 2022 season, comprising many match-winners of the T20 arena. However, they did not pick many multi-faceted players for their team. PBKS signed Odean Smith to fill the all-round void in the team but the West Indies all-rounder was not able to deliver the goods, be it with the ball or bat. The 26-year-old could manage only 51 runs in six games and leaked runs at an alarming rate of 11.87.

Punjab had invested a staggering sum of INR 6 crore at the 2022 mega auction for Odean and would have expected more from him. Therefore, the team management parted ways with the Jamaica-born ahead of the IPL 2023 player auction. Presently PBKS does not have a gun all-rounder in their team. Though they have stuck with Rishi Dhawan to add depth to the side, the 32-year-old was awful with the bat last season scoring 37 runs at a strike rate of 92.50.

Therefore, it is highly likely that PBKS would go shopping for top-drawer all-rounders at the upcoming player auction and the think tank could look at Holder, who has been a consistent performer in the lucrative T20 tournament. The West Indies all-rounder has bagged 49 wickets in 38 matches and scored 247 runs at a strike rate of 124.12. So, he could be the answer to Punjab’s all-round woes going ahead. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan & co. might try to pick Holder at the auction.

  • IPL 2023: Michael Hussey names ‘the next MS Dhoni’ of Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2023: Michael Hussey names ‘the next MS Dhoni’ of Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a terrible campaign in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Yellow Army could only register 4 victories and finished the season in ninth place in the team standings.

Notably, CSK had won the 2021 edition of the cash-rich league, and the defending champions were expected to do well in 2022, but the Super Kings failed to replicate their success. Ahead of the start of the IPL 2022, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was handed over the captaincy. However, Jadeja didn’t have a fruitful time as the skipper, and he relinquished the post, giving it back to MS Dhoni.

Since Dhoni is on the brink of retirement from IPL, the Super Kings will be looking to find a suitable candidate to lead the side in future. While the search for the next captain of CSK will continue, former Australian cricketer and CSK’s batting coach Michael Hussey has picked his choice, who can take over the role from Dhoni. Hussey reckoned that the Super Kings could fancy handing over the captaincy to youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Hussey reckoned that, like MSD, Ruturaj is also very calm and handles the pressure really well. The Aussie observed that Ruturaj has some incredible leadership qualities, and people are also drawn towards him because of his nature.

“He obviously watches Dhoni very closely. And the other impressive thing about him is he picks up things that other players don’t pick up that quickly. He is a self-made cricketer, and obviously, you need help along the way, and he is quite good at picking up new things from other players,” said Hussey, as quoted by The Indian Express.

“I’m not sure what the plans for the future at CSK, but like Dhoni, he is very calm. He is actually very calm when it comes to handling pressure like Dhoni, and he is a very good reader of the game, and as I said earlier, he is very observant, and I think people are drawn to him because of his nature, character and personality, and they like being around him. He has got some excellent leadership qualities,” added Hussey.
