  • Top 5 lowest scores in the history of IPL finals

Top 5 lowest scores in the history of IPL finals

The Indian Premier League (IPL) finals are often anticipated with great excitement and high expectations for nail-biting, closely contested matches. Fans and analysts alike look forward to the culmination of the tournament, hoping for a thrilling encounter that keeps them on the edge of their seats until the last ball.

The drama of a close chase, the tension of a last-over finish, and the spectacle of star players performing under pressure make the IPL finals a blockbuster event. Historic matches, such as the IPL 2019 final between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), decided by just 1 run, set the bar high for thrilling finales. These moments contribute to the IPL’s reputation as one of the most entertaining cricket leagues in the world, where every final is expected to be a grand spectacle of sportsmanship and skill.

    One-sided matches and pressure crumbles

However, the reality of IPL finals sometimes diverges from these high expectations, resulting in one-sided matches where one team crumbles under the immense pressure of the summit clash. There have been numerous instances in the 17-year history of the IPL where teams have succumbed to the high stakes, leading to lopsided outcomes.

For example, in the IPL 2013 final, CSK struggled to chase down a modest total set by MI, ultimately falling short by 23 runs. Similarly, in the IPL 2024 final, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were bowled out for just 113 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), making it an easy win for KKR. These instances highlight that the pressure of the final can often lead to underwhelming performances, where the nerves and expectations get the better of players and teams, resulting in matches that fail to deliver the anticipated thrill and competitiveness.

‘Nobody gives you discount for age’ – MS Dhoni underscores non-negotiable necessity of playing professional cricket

Fitness is indispensable in cricket, playing a pivotal role in every player’s performance on the field. Likewise, there exist only a handful of cricketers who rival the remarkable fitness of former Indian captain, MS Dhoni. His fitness levels have been akin to fine wine, improving with age and never showing signs of decline. His enduring stamina and agility have defied conventional expectations, allowing him to maintain peak performance throughout his illustrious career.

Recently, MS Dhoni discussed the arduous task of staying fit, pinpointing the most challenging aspect as gearing up for the IPL season. As someone not engaged in cricket throughout the year, he admitted to finding it daunting to keep pace with the younger players within his team and those from other franchises, who remain actively involved in international cricket, maintaining peak fitness levels consistently.

He underscored the unforgiving nature of professional sport, stressing that age offers no leniency and doesn’t afford any comfort zone. Additionally, he emphasized that advancing years don’t provide a cushion or any form of relaxation when it comes to maintaining performance standards. Amidst the pervasive influence of social media, Dhoni expressed thankfulness for steering clear of these platforms, enabling him to concentrate fully on his objectives devoid of distractions. Moreover, he highlighted the significance of disciplined dietary choices and consistent training regimens in upholding his fitness levels.

Also Read: Reports: Dhoni to decide on future in “a couple of months”

“The toughest thing is, I am not playing cricket throughout the year. So, I have to be fit. Once I come, you are competing against youngsters who are fit and playing international cricket. Professional sport is not easy, nobody gives you a discount for age. If you want to play, you have to be as fit as the other guy. Age does not really give that grace to you. So, eating habits, a bit of training, and all those things are there. Social media, thankfully, I am not on social media, so there’s less distraction,” shared Dhoni in a video on the YouTube Channel of Dubai Eye 103.8.

    These things de-stress me: Dhoni

The revolutionary campaigner, who played his last game for India in 2019 and officially hung up his boots in 2020, opened up that after quitting international cricket, he wanted to spend quality time with his family. However, at the same time, to stay focused, he would indulge in farming and being around his diverse collection of motorbikes, as well as his newly-found interest in vintage cars, which according to him, acted as a stress-buster.

“Once I quit international cricket, I wanted to spend a bit more time with my family. But, at that same time, to be mentally active, to have that passion to stay focussed – for me, I love farming, for me, it is the motorbikes. I have started getting into vintage cars. These things de-stress me,” expressed Dhoni.

  • Twitter erupts as RCB knocks CSK out to reach the IPL 2024 playoffs

Twitter erupts as RCB knocks CSK out to reach the IPL 2024 playoffs

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched the final playoff spot in the IPL 2024 by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday. RCB defended their total of 218, winning by 27 runs at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, which eliminated the defending champions CSK and secured RCB’s fourth place in the points table.

    RCB innings

RCB took full advantage of batting first at their home ground, posting a formidable total in their stipulated overs. The innings started positively with openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis building a solid foundation. Kohli scored a quick 47 runs off 29 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes, showing his class and aggression.

Du Plessis played a captain’s knock, anchoring the innings with 54 runs off 39 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. The momentum continued with Rajat Patidar, who smashed 41 runs off 23 balls, including 2 fours and 4 sixes, accelerating the run rate in the middle overs.

Cameron Green provided a powerful boost in the later stages, scoring 38 runs off just 17 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes. Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with quick runs towards the end, adding 14 and 16 runs respectively in very few balls. Their aggressive batting ensured RCB posted a challenging total of 218/5 against CSK.

    CSK innings

Chasing a daunting target of 219, CSK faced an early setback when Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball. However, Rachin Ravindra brought some stability to the innings with a well-constructed 61 runs off 37 balls, hitting 5 fours and 3 sixes.

Despite the early loss, Ajinkya Rahane played a steady knock, scoring 33 runs off 22 balls with 3 fours and 1 six. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni attempted to revive the innings with Jadeja scoring a brisk 42 runs off 22 balls, including 3 fours and 3 sixes, and Dhoni contributing 25 runs off 13 balls with 3 fours and 1 six.

The middle-order struggles, including low scores from Daryl Mitchell (4 runs off 6 balls), Shivam Dube (7 runs off 15 balls), and Mitchell Santner (3 runs off 4 balls), hindered CSK’s chase. Eventually, CSK fell short, managing 191/7 in their 20 overs.

‘He has given his blood, sweat, and everything to this team’ – Harbhajan Singh accentuates MS Dhoni’s importance to CSK

Describing MS Dhoni’s legend is a daunting task; he’s been the heartbeat of the Chennai Super Kings since their inception. Through the years, he’s skippered and led the Men in Yellow to victory on five occasions, a feat on par with the Mumbai Indians. Having concluded his international career at the Cricket World Cup 2019, he has since focused solely on the IPL.

At the time, he firmly rejected retirement inquiries with a simple “Definitely Not”. After clinching the record-equalling fifth title in Ahmedabad last year, he decided to extend his IPL stint for another year for the Chennai faithful. Nonetheless, his future plans remain known only to himself. With the culmination of another IPL season on the horizon, the spotlight has once again turned to the topic of MS Dhoni’s future.

Former India cricketer, Harbhajan Singh, who has also played under Dhoni in the IPL during the former’s stint with CSK for three seasons (2018-20), had his response ready to be unveiled while speaking on Star Sports’ Press Room show.

Harbhajan went so far as to assert that Dhoni was the team’s proprietor. He also pointed out that the team’s focal point has always been him, and that it’s built around him, as well as the fact that he’s given his all for the sake of the team. The former office was confident regarding Dhoni being associated with the CSK camp in one form or another in the seasons to come; whether as a mentor or a coach. Highlighting the guiding light that he’s been to other players of the esteemed franchise, Harbhajan felt the franchise would not want to part ways with him, keeping him associated with the unit in some capacity or the other.

“He’s the owner of the team. Uske marzi ke bina waha patta bhi nahi hilta. It’s his team. He has given his blood, sweat and everything to this team. He will always be a part of the CSK group, whether as a mentor or as a coach. He’s everything over thereYou will definitely see him in the CSK dugout in the coming seasons. Maybe not as a player but in some other capacity, but he will be there with the players,” he added.

He’s definitely going to be there, for sure: Rayudu on Dhoni

Ambati Rayudu, who was on the same talk show as Harbhajan, couldn’t agree more, reiterating the latter’s belief stating that even he felt that the team was Dhoni and the 42-year-old was the architect and the mediator of the ethos which CSK is known to be capacitated with.

“Bhajji pa rightly said! That’s his team. He developed the culture that’s there at present. He has been nurturing players in that franchise, and he is definitely going to be there, for sure,” remarked Rayudu.

Twitter reactions: Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan drive GT to dominant win over CSK in IPL 2024

In a high-octane clash of powerhouses, Gujarat Titans (GT) squared off against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 59 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gujarat dominated the contest and registered a triumph by 35 runs.

Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan sizzle with centuries

Winning the toss, CSK opted to bowl first, aiming to capitalize on any early advantage offered by the pitch. However, the Titans’ batting lineup had other plans. Their innings was marked by sheer dominance as their batsmen unleashed a relentless assault on the Super Kings’ bowling attack. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill emerged as the architects of the Titans’ formidable total, both notching up scintillating centuries.

Sudharsan’s blitzkrieg knock of 103 runs off 51 deliveries, embellished with five fours and seven sixes, set the tone for the Titans. Gill complemented him perfectly, crafting a magnificent 104 off 55 balls, adorned with nine fours and six sixes. Despite a brief resistance from David Miller and Shahrukh Khan, the Titans concluded their innings with a commanding total of 231/3 after 20 overs.

Daryl Mitchell, Ravindra Jadeja’s knocks not enough for CSK to turn the tables

Facing a daunting chase, Chennai Super Kings required a stellar effort from their batting lineup. However, their pursuit encountered early setbacks, with the top order failing to make an impact. Daryl Mitchell emerged as the lone warrior amidst the ruins, smashing a blazing 63 off 34 deliveries, accompanied by seven fours and three sixes.

Moeen Ali contributed a valiant 56 off 36 balls, but the Titans’ bowling attack maintained relentless pressure. Despite late cameos from Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, and former skipper MS Dhoni, the Super Kings fell short of the target, managing 196/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

In the bowling department, Gujarat Titans’ Umesh Yadav and Rashid Khan showcased their prowess, scalping crucial wickets to dent the Super Kings’ momentum. Mohit Sharma emerged as the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets to stifle the opposition’s charge.

IPL 2024, PBKS vs CSK: Reason why Mustafizur Rahman is not playing today’s game

Punjab Kings (PBKS) won the toss and elected to field first in their crucial IPL 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday.

CSK seek revival at a new venue

Currently sitting at fifth in the points table with 10 points, CSK are desperate for a win to keep their playoff hopes alive with only four matches remaining in the season. The change of venue to Dharamsala might be a welcome sign for the five-time champions, who were recently thrashed by PBKS at their home ground, Chepauk Stadium, just three days ago.

Punjab Kings aim for third consecutive win

On the other hand, PBKS are riding a wave of momentum. Their back-to-back victories have reignited their playoff aspirations. They will be looking to exploit CSK’s vulnerabilities and secure their third consecutive win against the defending champions. Notably, this win against CSK in Chennai made them the second team after Mumbai Indians (MI) to defeat CSK five times in a row.

    Mustafizur Rahman absent for CSK

Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, a key bowler for CSK with 14 wickets in 9 matches this season, is unavailable for today’s match as he has joined his national team for the ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe. Mitchell Santner replaces him in the CSK playing XI.

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, speaking at the toss, acknowledged the team’s struggles with injuries and forced changes throughout the season. He emphasized the importance of focusing on their own process and not dwelling on the opposition’s record. He confirmed that Santner will replace “Fizz” (Mustafizur Rahman) in the lineup.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to clash in a much-anticipated match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

PBKS will enter the game boosted with confidence following two consecutive victories, whereas CSK will be eager to recover after facing a loss in their previous match.

IPL Stats and Records at HPCA Stadium:

    • Total Matches: 11
    • Batting 1st Won: 6

    • Average score batting first: 180

    HPCA Stadium Pitch Report:

The HPCA Stadium is widely regarded as a batter-friendly pitch, known for providing some bounce that aids fast bowlers. Historically, it has been a venue conducive to high-scoring matches. Due to its elevation above sea level, the pitch is expected to offer swing with the new ball, favouring pace bowlers who can exploit the movement off the pitch. However, spinners typically find little assistance on this ground, as there is minimal turn available. Consequently, it promises to be an ideal batting track, offering occasional bounce and movement for the pacers.

    Dharamsala Weather Forecast:

The weather forecast for Dharamshala promises an ideal setting for cricket. Expect clear skies throughout the day, with no rain in sight. Temperatures are forecasted to remain comfortable at around 27 degrees Celsius, ensuring an enjoyable experience for players and spectators alike. Additionally, gentle breezes, not surpassing 14 kilometres per hour, coupled with moderate humidity levels of approximately 36%, will create a perfect cricketing ambience. Overall, the conditions are set to be optimal for an exciting day of cricket.

  • IPL 2024: 3 changes GT should make to get back to winning ways

IPL 2024: 3 changes GT should make to get back to winning ways

Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium was expected to produce a high-scoring thriller, but it turned out to be a one-sided low-scoring affair as the hosts cruised to a convincing four-wicket victory. Yes, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) had some hiccups while chasing a meagre 148 runs, but they were always on top of the game, credit to the openers.

Gujarat Titans (GT) were invited to bat and RCB bowlers put on a scintillating show throughout the match. Swapnil Singh bowled a tidy opening over and Mohammed Siraj complemented well by nipping out both the GT openers. The visitors were reduced to the lowest powerplay total of this season. A 50+ partnership between Shahrukh Khan and David Miller gave some life to GT’s innings, but in the end, they managed to post only a below-par score on the board.

In reply, RCB openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis came out all guns blazing. The skipper was the most aggressive among them and helped RCB post their highest Powerplay score of the season (92/0) as he hit 64 off 23 balls. Soon after his dismissal in the sixth over, the home side endured a mini-collapse as they were reduced to 117/6, thanks to Joshua Little’s four-wicket haul.

However, the damage was already done and Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh took them over the line. RCB chased down the target in 13.4 overs and registered a big win to move up to seventh in the points table. Meanwhile, Titans have slipped to ninth in the points table with seven losses from 11 matches.

Here are the 3 changes that Gujarat Titans need to make before their next match against CSK:

    3. Replace Wriddhiman Saha with BR Sharath

Wriddhiman Saha has had a long run this season with GT but hasn’t been able to make any impact for the team. In nine innings, the keeper-batter has scored just 136 runs at an average of 15.11 and a strike rate of 118.25. Notably, he survived the powerplay only once in 9 innings.

This spells high time for GT to find a replacement for the senior cricketer. As GT cannot afford an overseas wicketkeeper right now, Karnataka player BR Sharath can be considered over Matthew Wade. The 27-year-old has been impressive on the domestic circuit and could do well for GT in the remaining races of the series.

    2. Bring in Kane Williamson to bolster the middle order

Kane Williamson has played only a handful of matches this season. It may be true that he was not impressive in those innings, but the experience he brings to the team and his ability to win crucial matches is what GT need right now.

If Sai Sudharsan can open the innings with Shubman Gill in place of Saha, Williamson can come at No.3. The New Zealand captain can anchor the innings and help them finish with a good score. Currently, GT’s middle order looks inconsistent and will only get stronger with the addition of the veteran batter.

    1. Shubman Gill needs to step up

Shubman Gill is the leading force in GT’s batting unit. He has scored over 320 runs in the ongoing IPL 2024 but has been struggling in the last four matches, scoring just 59 runs. It’s the team’s overall performance that may be holding him back from performing at his best.

However, as it is a do-or-die situation for the 2022 champions, no excuse can help him and the team and the GT opener needs to step up. Gill has the ability to give a solid powerplay and stabilise the innings in the middle over to help the team reach a competitive total.
