IPL 2024: 3 changes GT should make to get back to winning ways

Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium was expected to produce a high-scoring thriller, but it turned out to be a one-sided low-scoring affair as the hosts cruised to a convincing four-wicket victory. Yes, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) had some hiccups while chasing a meagre 148 runs, but they were always on top of the game, credit to the openers.

Gujarat Titans (GT) were invited to bat and RCB bowlers put on a scintillating show throughout the match. Swapnil Singh bowled a tidy opening over and Mohammed Siraj complemented well by nipping out both the GT openers. The visitors were reduced to the lowest powerplay total of this season. A 50+ partnership between Shahrukh Khan and David Miller gave some life to GT’s innings, but in the end, they managed to post only a below-par score on the board.

In reply, RCB openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis came out all guns blazing. The skipper was the most aggressive among them and helped RCB post their highest Powerplay score of the season (92/0) as he hit 64 off 23 balls. Soon after his dismissal in the sixth over, the home side endured a mini-collapse as they were reduced to 117/6, thanks to Joshua Little’s four-wicket haul.

However, the damage was already done and Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh took them over the line. RCB chased down the target in 13.4 overs and registered a big win to move up to seventh in the points table. Meanwhile, Titans have slipped to ninth in the points table with seven losses from 11 matches.

Here are the 3 changes that Gujarat Titans need to make before their next match against CSK:

    3. Replace Wriddhiman Saha with BR Sharath

Wriddhiman Saha has had a long run this season with GT but hasn’t been able to make any impact for the team. In nine innings, the keeper-batter has scored just 136 runs at an average of 15.11 and a strike rate of 118.25. Notably, he survived the powerplay only once in 9 innings.

This spells high time for GT to find a replacement for the senior cricketer. As GT cannot afford an overseas wicketkeeper right now, Karnataka player BR Sharath can be considered over Matthew Wade. The 27-year-old has been impressive on the domestic circuit and could do well for GT in the remaining races of the series.

    2. Bring in Kane Williamson to bolster the middle order

Kane Williamson has played only a handful of matches this season. It may be true that he was not impressive in those innings, but the experience he brings to the team and his ability to win crucial matches is what GT need right now.

If Sai Sudharsan can open the innings with Shubman Gill in place of Saha, Williamson can come at No.3. The New Zealand captain can anchor the innings and help them finish with a good score. Currently, GT’s middle order looks inconsistent and will only get stronger with the addition of the veteran batter.

    1. Shubman Gill needs to step up

Shubman Gill is the leading force in GT’s batting unit. He has scored over 320 runs in the ongoing IPL 2024 but has been struggling in the last four matches, scoring just 59 runs. It’s the team’s overall performance that may be holding him back from performing at his best.

However, as it is a do-or-die situation for the 2022 champions, no excuse can help him and the team and the GT opener needs to step up. Gill has the ability to give a solid powerplay and stabilise the innings in the middle over to help the team reach a competitive total.

IPL 2024: PBKS playfully mocks MS Dhoni following their convincing win over CSK

Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 7 wickets in the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. After being asked to bat first, CSK struggled against PBKS bowlers and could only manage a below-par total of 162 for 7, despite Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s commendable innings of 62 runs off 48 balls.

In response, PBKS easily chased the target in 17.5 overs, powered by impactful performances from Jonny Bairstow (46 off 30) and Rilee Rossouw (43 off 23). Following their win, PBKS took a jab at MS Dhoni on social media, sparking a buzz and generating mixed reactions from fans.

Punjab Kings pokes fun at MS Dhoni’s ‘Thala for a reason’ trend

Fans and notable figures have embraced a trend of associating the number 7 with Dhoni, owing to his jersey number. Joining the trend, PBKS took a dig at Dhoni and CSK humorously. Following their win against CSK, PBKS rose to seventh spot on the IPL points table. Regarding their position in the team standings, PBKS shared the points table on social media. They captioned the post, “Our position in the points table! Thala for a reason!”

Interestingly, during the CSK vs PBKS match, Dhoni was dismissed as the seventh batter for CSK. PBKS took note of this and playfully mocked the 42-year-old cricketer with a post mentioned, “Dhoni was our 7th wicket today! Thala for a reason!”

CSK vs PBKS: Daryl Mitchell completes two runs with MS Dhoni rooted to his crease at striker’s end, video goes viral

Sending the Chennai Super Kings in to bat on winning the toss in Match 49 of IPL 2024 turned out to be quite constructive for the Punjab Kings in a not-so-constructive season for the visitors so far. For CSK, their innings didn’t quite boast of any astounding performances other than a captain’s knock played by skipper, Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose 48-ball 62-run knock helped keep CSK in the fray for the most part of the innings, in addition to him reclaiming the Orange Cap for the time being.

Right from Ajinkya Rahane who could never really get going (29 off 24) to Impact Player, Sameer Rizvi, not at all living up to the tag in his struggling innings of 21 (23), the home team could never really break free and provide any impetus to their innings, courtesy of Harpeet Brar and Rahul Chahar, who put the brakes on CSK by scalping four and not giving away a single boundary in their collective spell.

Even the icon, MS Dhoni, couldn’t express himself to his fullest. The ex-Indian captain and former CSK skipper came out to bat in the latter phase of the 18th over but didn’t look anywhere near the explosive best he’s been during the current season, decimating opposition bowlers left, right & centre. The gutsy call of bringing on Chahar to bowl the penultimate over of the innings worked wonders as he was victorious in not conceding a single boundary in the four deliveries he bowled to Dhoni.

With Arshdeep Singh bowling the last over and Dhoni being on strike since the first ball, the first three balls were a wide, boundary (Dhoni’s first four), dot ball and another wide. A bizarre moment ensued as Dhoni hit, rather sliced, the re-bowled third delivery, a low full-toss, to deep cover. Daryl Mitchell, running as hard as he could, would probably have thought of a double. However, Dhoni had other ideas as he just stood in his crease, which virtually meant Mitchell, who was not really aware of Dhoni’s intentions, arrived at the striker’s end, tapped his bat, and ran back to the non-striker’s end, where a direct-hit couldn’t be affected, nor did Arshdeep make the slightest of efforts to position his hands anywhere near the rocketing throw.

In the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) unfolded into an exhilarating encounter. Punjab eventually registered a victory and continued their domination over CSK as they remain unbeaten against the Yellow Army since 2021.

Rahul Chahar, Harpreet Brar keep CSK batters at bay

The Super Kings commenced their innings with a blend of steady batting and occasional bursts of aggression. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased remarkable resilience, scoring a commendable 62 runs off 48 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. Opener Ajinkya Rahane provided a solid foundation with 29 runs off 24 deliveries.

However, their momentum was curtailed by disciplined bowling performances from Punjab’s bowlers, restricting them to a total of 162/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Rahul Chahar bagged a couple of wickets while conceding 16 runs in 4 overs. Similarly, Harpreet Brar picked up two wickets each for 17 runs.

Jonny Bairstow, Rilee Rossouw take Punjab home

In pursuit of 163 runs for victory, Punjab’s batters displayed exceptional prowess and determination. Jonny Bairstow spearheaded the chase with a blistering knock of 46 runs off 30 balls, complemented by Rilee Rossouw‘s aggressive innings of 43 runs off 23 deliveries.

Shashank Singh and Sam Curran also contributed significantly with scores of 25 and 26 runs respectively. Despite the early dismissal of Prabhsimran Singh, Punjab Kings exhibited remarkable composure, securing victory with 7 wickets in hand and 13 balls to spare.

The Super Kings’ bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught from Punjab’s batters. While Shardul Thakur and Richard Gleeson managed to pick up a wicket each, the bowling unit faced a formidable challenge against PBKS aggressive batting lineup.

IPL 2024: Here’s why CSK pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande not playing today’s game against PBKS

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are taking on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The stage is set at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where fans gathered in anticipation of an exhilarating contest.

PBKS captain, Sam Curran, won the toss and elected to field first, opting to take advantage of the conditions early on in the game. This decision marked the ninth toss lost in ten games for CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad in the ongoing 17th season of the cash-rich league, highlighting a trend of unfortunate luck in the toss department for the CSK team.

While Punjab made no alterations to their final XI, the CSK management opted for a couple of changes in their playing lineup. The absence of the fast-bowling duo, Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande, from the CSK squad was notable.

Reason behind the absence of Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande

Notably, during the toss, Ruturaj mentioned that while they would have preferred to field first, they weren’t entirely sure due to uncertain conditions. He acknowledged the challenge of dew affecting defending totals but highlighted the team’s impressive previous performance despite this.

The CSK skipper also noted the absence of Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande due to injury and illness respectively, emphasizing the importance of setting a good score batting first.

“We would have fielded first, but we weren’t exactly sure. Always tough defending here with a lot of dew, but the fact that we won by 78 runs shows a lot about the team, but we’ll be missing out Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande today. We’ll have to get there early and make a good score. Every game is important. Pathirana has a slight niggle, Deshpande isn’t well, so we’ve Shardul and Richard Gleeson makes his debut,” said Ruturaj at the toss.

Twitter reactions: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Tushar Deshpande propel CSK to a thumping win over SRH | IPL 2024

In an emphatic display of cricketing prowess, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) outclassed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 46 of the Indian Premier League 2024, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. Winning by a substantial margin of 78 runs, CSK’s performance was a blend of solid batting and tight bowling, leaving the Sunrisers with little room to manoeuver.

    CSK Sets a Daunting Target

Electing to bowl first, SRH bowlers faced an immediate onslaught from CSK batters, who set a formidable total of 212/3 in their 20 overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad was the standout performer, nearly reaching a century with 98 runs off 54 balls, including 10 fours and 3 sixes. His innings provided the backbone for CSK’s massive total. Daryl Mitchell also contributed significantly with a swift 52 off 32 deliveries, enhancing the team’s momentum with 7 fours and 1 six. Shivam Dube added quick runs towards the end, smashing 39 off 20 balls, propelled by 1 four and 4 sixes.

Sunrisers’ bowlers struggled to contain CSK’s hitters. Although Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat and T Natarajan managed to pick up a wicket each, their economy rates were on the higher side, with skipper Pat Cummins conceding 49 runs in his 4-over spell.

    SRH Crumbles Under Pressure

In response, SRH innings never really took off as they were bundled out for 134 in 18.5 overs. Aiden Markram tried to stabilize the innings with a composed 32 off 26 balls, but the regular loss of wickets kept the pressure mounting. Heinrich Klaasen and Abdul Samad made small contributions of 20 and 19 runs, respectively, but CSK’s bowlers were simply too good on the day.

Tushar Deshpande was particularly lethal, claiming 4 wickets for 27 runs in his 3 overs. Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana also chipped in with crucial wickets, ensuring that the Sunrisers’ lineup was decimated without much resistance.

Twitter reactions: Marcus Stoinis’ century overshines Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ton as LSG beat CSK in IPL 2024

Marcus Stoinis’ blistering innings overshadowed Ruturaj Gaikwad‘s century as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered a thrilling six-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a high-scoring encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

    Ruturaj Gaikwad’s masterful century

After being invited to bat first, CSK innings began with Ajinkya Rahane‘s early departure, scoring just 1 run off 3 balls. However, Gaikwad emerged as the linchpin of the CSK innings, showcasing sublime batting skills. Gaikwad’s breathtaking century mesmerized the crowd, as he carved his way to a majestic 108 runs off a mere 60 deliveries. His innings was a blend of elegance and power, punctuated by 12 exquisite boundaries and 3 towering sixes.

    Shivam Dube’s explosive cameo

Despite Gaikwad’s brilliance, the other CSK batters struggled to capitalize on the solid foundation laid by their opener. Daryl Mitchell and Ravindra Jadeja failed to score with high-strike rate, but it was Shivam Dube‘s explosive cameo that injected momentum into the innings. Dube’s scintillating 66 runs off just 27 balls, featuring 3 boundaries and an impressive 7 sixes, propelled CSK to a formidable to score of 210/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite the onslaught, LSG’s bowlers put up a commendable effort, with Matt Henry, Mohsin Khan and Yash Thakur among the wicket-takers for the innings.

Stoinis unleashed a barrage of boundaries and sixes, decimating the CSK bowling attack with his aggressive strokeplay. His breathtaking innings of 124 runs off just 63 deliveries completely shifted the momentum in LSG’s favour,

    LSG’s remarkable chase and victory

Stoinis’ knock was a masterclass in power-hitting, as he smashed 13 boundaries and 6 monstrous sixes to leave the CSK bowlers gasping for breath. Supported by Nicholas Pooran and Deepak Hooda, Stoinis propelled LSG towards the target with sheer determination and grit as LSG reached the target with three balls to spare, finishing at 213/4 in 19.3 overs.
