Inside football’s other World Cup… and how the ‘Street Socceroos’ are inspiring a nation

The Matildas are a worldwide phenomenon, the Socceroos have stunned some of the best teams in world football — but have you heard of the Street Socceroos?

They’re one of the lesser known teams representing Australia, but potentially the most inspiring, made up of eight individuals experiencing homelessness from across the nation.

The Street Socceroos compete in the Homeless World Cup, a tournament that sees those sleeping rough wear their country’s colours proudly, shining a light on homelessness.

While some are desperate to lift the trophy, for others it’s simply about experiencing an event “like no other” in the hopes it can inspire them to make positive change.

This year’s Australian team was made up of eight individuals — Faz, Ibrahim, Abdalla, Faisal, Ron, Malika, Sara and Michael — who travelled to Seoul in South Korea in September.

They were picked from the 30 programs across Australia, with around 500 people participating in some lighthearted football that invites people of all ages, backgrounds and situations.

Street Socceroos head coach, George Halkias, played a major role in the program’s inception 20 years ago.

“We started as a pilot in 2004. We sent our first team ever to Edinburgh in 2005 and then in 2007 we were lucky to get federal government funding to expand across the country,” Halkias said to foxsports.com.au.

“So it’s been a sort of long journey to you know from something so small to a network of programs around the country and also participating in that event annually which is pretty special.

“It’s been a great sort of team effort by the organisation to grow so exponentially in those two decades.”

The Homeless World Cup began in Graz, Austria way back in 2003, and Halkias explained there’s around 60 to 70 thousand individuals involved in similar football programs across the globe.

The coach, who has a background in football and psychology, explained that from the Australian system, players from vast walks of life are selected.

“So there’s a network of almost 30 programs across Australia… and there’s 400 to 500 people participating each week,” he said.

“So we’re really just working with players to make better lifestyle choices. That’s the aim but they also have a great love of sport.

“Our participants are aged 16 and up and all genders and yeah, picking a team of eight is not easy.

“I also try to make it representative of the different types of people that come to our program. So that’s people who are experiencing homelessness in some form, mental illness disability, long term unemployment.

“Some have sought refuge in our country and have been displaced. So we get nominations from all around the country from their local coaches.”

Michael, one of this year’s team members, had never played a sport with a round ball before becoming involved in the football community.

“Michael is an indigenous man in his 40s who I guess would have experienced homelessness, racism, just a challenging youth,” Halkias said.

“That manifested also in homelessness and substance abuse in recent times. He actually slept rough as well on the pitch which we train every week.

“But with a range of different community supports he’s been able to get secure housing, and turn up weekly to his program. He sells the Big Issue magazine on the streets of Adelaide.

“That’s his way of earning an extra income and he’s been able to face his addiction. He was new to the sport but he wore the green and gold proudly and improved his skills.

Malika, meanwhile, got her chance to represent Australia after arriving in the country only “a few years ago” from Afghanistan.

“Displaced and I guess homeless because of violence in her homeland,” Halkias explained.

“She hadn’t played the game before and got that opportunity in Victoria, she started in our weekly women’s programs in the south east and built her skills and her confidence.

“And her interpersonal skills, and that’s the mix of people that we get in our programs which is pretty special.”

Australia’s team was littered with players of mixed abilities, but for Halkias, football simply becomes a “constant they can rely on”, with their ability an afterthought to individual growth.

“It’s an event like no other, where people come together and compete, go hard when they’re on the pitch, but off the pitch they’ve got to know each other,” Halkias said.

So how did they go in South Korea? The tournament began with all teams on a level playing field.

The Street Socceroos in Seoul for the Homeless World Cup. Source: The Big Issue Australia, Instagram.Source: Instagram

Then, after the first handful of games, each nation was given match-ups that would provide a fair contest with teams facing off with equal skill levels.

The Street Socceroos came up against footballing heavyweight Brazil, whilst also facing Denmark, Scotland and Ireland.

Then their wins came against Cambodia, Sweden and Zimbabwe, being awarded a FIFPRO Fair Play Award on the first day of the competition for their efforts.

And it was a hugely positive experience for our representatives, with Halkias explaining: “They get so much support from the crowd over there, other people, their families, their local communities. I think it’s important they realise that people don’t judge them.

“Some have made a few mistakes, or copped some kicks in the shins so to speak, but they can overcome them. There’s a lot of people out there to support them as well.

“The experience and understanding, it gives them a huge boost… and hope, sometimes when it’s not going your way, things can look forlorn.

“So players really have that spring in their step when they come back and then they can start to look forward, start to try new things and build that self esteem.”

As for the overall goal of the tournament, it’s to “improve their health and wellbeing, secure housing and make good healthy lifestyle choices”.

But for Halkias, one of the most important things for those sleeping rough is to “feel part of the community” they’re living in and to “start contributing”.

“Because they’ve shown that when they get an opportunity like this one, they can prove themselves,” Halkias added.

Post tournament, those involved sit down and set personal goals to spark an “upward trajectory”.

Opportunities for work come in the form of speaking gigs, educating schools and companies about homelessness.

Others, like Michael, sell The Big Issue magazine to earn an income, but overall players “move forward in a whole host of ways” according to Halkias.

“They get this shot of self esteem and confidence, and we can facilitate some direction to that but it’s ultimately up to them to use that and be empowered by that,” Halkias said.

“We also know that overcoming addiction and changing your life takes quite a bit of work.

“Sometimes it’s backwards and forwards, but we just try and look at the individual, look at what their strengths are and work towards new goals for them.

“Because they’ve shown that when you get the right support, there’s a whole heap of things that they can do… they’ve got the potential to achieve great things as well.

“When you wear the green and gold, and you overcome the challenges they have, I think it gives them a huge boost and a level of resilience they can use for the rest of their lives.”

Meanwhile, Australia are putting in a bid to host the event in 2026, alongside the Asian Cup and the Olympics.

West Ham upset Newcastle’s winning run | 01:05

Halkias was involved in the 2008 edition, which was played in Melbourne and said “I can tell you first hand, Australians can get right behind it”.

The Big Issue are under no illusions it’s going to be a tough task to get the bid over the line. But should it be played in Australia, it’s sure to spark a conversation.

“It’s an event that can motivate and inspire us, cheer us up. Sometimes, life can be a bit serious and bloomy but I think this is uplifting,” Halkias said.

“But it can also get us talking about a whole range of things from being more physically active, having more respect for women and gender equality, the importance of support for mental illness and disability.

“So it can also have an element of, you know, addressing some social issues. But I think more importantly, it’s a great event that brings people from all over the world. I think the whole community get behind it.”

School of Ange grows as A-League-winning duo join Aussie’s Tottenham revolution

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has added two A-League alumni to his staff, with former Central Coast Mariners duo Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo joining as assistant coaches.

Montgomery and Raimundo were the architects of the Mariners’ thrilling A-League resurgence as head coach and assistant respectively.

The duo guided the Central Coast to the championship in 2022/23 thanks to a 6-1 mauling of Melbourne City in the grand final, the club’s first title since 2013.

However, Montgomery and Raimundo departed before the 23/24 season for Scottish Premiership side Hibernian.

Unfortunately the pair’s time in Edinburgh lasted just eight months after Montgomery was sacked having failed to record a top-half finish.

In a club statement, Postecoglou revealed his excitement at bringing the duo onto his staff at Tottenham.

“Both Nick and Sergio have a wealth of coaching experience over a number of years,” Postecoglou said.

“They have already demonstrated a strong desire to both develop young talent and implement a football style that I believe will further strengthen the environment we have established. I’m looking forward to working with them.”

  • Arnold knocks back Scottish gig for Socceroos as squad for Mexico friendly revealed

Arnold knocks back Scottish gig for Socceroos as squad for Mexico friendly revealed

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has revealed he knocked back an approach from Scottish club Hibernian because he’s “got a job to do” with the Australian team looking to build on last year’s World Cup success.

Arnold, who signed an extension as national coach after taking the Socceroos to the Round of 16 in Qatar last year, had been linked to the vacancy at Scottish Club Hibernian, based in Edinburgh, and confirmed they reached out to talk to him after sacking manager Lee Johnson last week.

But as he confirmed the national recall of one of Hibs three Australians, Martin Boyle, for the September 10 clash with Mexico in Dallas, Arnold said he loves his job with the Socceroos too much to consider another offer.

“It was an honour that Hibs rang me and offered me the job but I‘ve got a job to do here,” Arnold said on Friday after unveiling his squad for the September 10 friendly.

“I will say I love coaching our nation, I feel I‘ve got a great job.

“For me it‘s all about Mexico, getting ourselves ready for that and developing and helping our boys in Australia.

“I spoke to their owner and at this moment the timing‘s not right.

“I have a job on my hands here and I have full focus on the Socceroos.”

Arnold has his senior brigade of captain Mat Ryan, Aziz Behich, Mitch Duke, Jackson Irvine and Mathew Leckie all locked for the trip to the as part of a squad which also features five uncapped players.

Fresh off a move to EFL Championship side, Middlesborough FC, Sam Silvera earns his call up, along with goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer from Charlton Athletic FC as understudy to Ryan and Tom Glover.

Defender Cameron Burgess, who emigrated from Aberdeen to Australia as an 11-year-old will also join the squad for the first time while Alessandro Circati returns for his second senior national team camp after seeing plenty of game time with Parma Calcio 1913 in Serie B in Italy. this season, while Nick D’agostino (Viking FK) will also join the camp in Dallas.

Boyle has been recalled for the first time since he suffered an ACL injury on the eve of last year‘s World Cup campaign in Qatar where the Socceroos were knocked out by eventual champions Argentina after making it through to the Round of 16.

Arnold said he’d been impressed by the Boyle’s form on his return from injury. .

“You‘ve got to give the guy full credit, he had the operation in November last year and nine months later he’s back,” Arnold said.

“Most players take 12 months so he‘s he’s done exceptionally well and hit the ground running straightaway with Hibs.

“It‘s great to have him back and if anyone does deserve anything it’s Boyley because he copped that injury just before the World Cup.”

Arnold also said the chance this window presents to the younger members of his squad was an exciting one with the Asian Cup on his immediate radar before the 2026 World Cup being played in the US, Canada and Mexico.

“Playing Mexico is a great opportunity for the entire group, allowing us to not only test ourselves against quality opposition, but also familiarise ourselves with playing in the United States as we look towards 2026,” Arnold said.

“We’re coming up against top Central American opposition in front of what I’m sure will be a lively home crowd, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the squad approaches and responds to that challenge.

“We’ve brought several younger players into this camp to give the coaching staff a glimpse at how they can perform both within our system and on the international stage. We’ve closely monitored the form they’re bringing from their clubs, and I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen overall.

“The new members of the squad will have the benefit of working alongside many of our established, senior players, who will play an important role in instilling the values and principles of our group.”

Hibernian are yet to register a point from their three games in the Scottish Premiership and sit in last place, although they did make it through to the second round of the Scottish League Cup.

Arnold gained plenty of admirers across the football world after he led Australia to a stunning run to the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

AUSSIE STAR’S PL DREAM TURNS INTO NIGHTMARE AS DREADED FATE SEALED

Harry Souttar’s Premier League dream has sadly turned into a living nightmare as Leicester City was relegated despite a 2-1 win over West Ham United on the final day.

The Foxes had to win and hope Bournemouth would hold Everton to at least a draw.

Although Dean Smith’s side held up their end of the bargain, a thumping strike from Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure killed off any chance of Leicester staying up.

Souttar was an unused substitute for the do-or-die clash as he now contemplates life in the Championship once again barely five months after leaving Stoke City for Premier League life.

Former Socceroo Robbie Slater claimed it’s “turned out a nightmare move after what seemed like a dream move” but believes the towering centre-back is best served by sticking around at the club.

“I think he will stay,” Slater told Fox Sports News.

“I think for Leicester and, if it’s Dean Smith who does stay there, I think someone like Harry Souttar will be a real bonus for Leicester’s hopes for bouncing back up into the Premier League at their first shot in the Championship.

“We have seen throughout history that it doesn’t always end up being the case that way.

“It’s important for him or Leicester to keep him because of his experience in the Championship and what he did at Stoke City.”

    MIXED FORTUNES FOR SCOTTISH CONTINGENT

Souttar wasn’t the only Aussie to suffer the cruel fate of relegation, as Aziz Behich and Mark Birighitti were sent to the second tier of Scotland with Dundee United.

Behich played the full 90 minutes for the Tangerines in a 3-2 loss to Motherwell while Birighitti was an unused substitute.

However, it was a more enjoyable weekend for several of the other Aussies in Scotland.

Although he was out with an injury, Aaron Mooy was front and centre during Celtic’s league title celebrations after a resounding 5-0 win over Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

The Socceroos midfielder will now hope to be fit enough for Celtic’s Scottish FA Cup final against Inverness Caledonian Thistle as Ange Postecoglou’s side look to complete the domestic treble.

Down in the Scottish capital, Kye Rowles, Cameron Devlin and Nathaniel Atkinson all logged 90 minutes for Hearts against Hibernian in the Edinburgh derby.

Hearts drew 1-1 against their local rivals in a result which secured a spot in the Europa Conference League for the former.

    ELSEWHERE AROUND THE GROUNDS …

Awer Mabil had the pleasure of lifting a trophy as Sparta Prague secured the league title despite a 1-0 loss to Viktoria Plzen.

The winger entered the contest in the 66th minute but was unable to help his team get back in the contest, although it mattered little.

Mabil moved to the club on loan from Spanish side Cadiz in January.

In the Netherlands, Mat Ryan couldn’t prevent AZ Alkmaar from slipping to a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredevisie.

However, the result kept AZ in fourth place and meant the club secured a spot in next season’s Europa Conference League playoff.

Another Aussie in relegation trouble is midfielder Ajdin Hrustic.

Hrustic didn’t see any game time for Serie A side Hellas Verona in a 1-1 draw against Empoli which subsequently dropped the Aussie’s team into the relegation zone.

They now face the uphill task of getting a result against AC Milan on the final day of the season and hope Roma can beat Spezia.

‘Primary candidate’: Postecoglou ‘strongly considered’ for Spurs job after latest PL bombshell

Tottenham is “strongly considering” Ange Postecoglou as its next manager after their top candidate rejected an offer to leave a Dutch powerhouse.

Arne Slot, the manager of Feyenoord, was the leading contender ahead of Roberto De Zerbi and Luis Enrique but after holding talks with Spurs will remain in the Eredivisie, reports The Athletic.

“Spurs have been looking for a candidate who can institute cultural change at the club, bringing every aspect of the club back together and re-energising the style of play,” according to the report.

“That has seen them turn away from some of the bigger-name candidates and instead look for a candidate who represents something close to what Mauricio Pochettino did when he arrived at Spurs in 2014. Pochettino himself was not approached this summer, and is now on the brink of taking over at Chelsea instead.”

Where will Ange end up next season? | 00:56

That has Aussie Postecoglou, recently named Scotland’s Manager of the Year for a second straight season after taking Celtic to another league title, as one of the “primary candidates” at Spurs according to The Independent’s Miguel Delaney.

“While the feeling in the game had been that the Slot negotiations were close to the finish line, some figures with knowledge of the situation insist Spurs were still conducting discussions about a top list of targets. One of those is Postecoglou, who is being strongly considered, along with Sporting’s Ruben Amorim,” Delaney’s report stated.

“Daniel Levy would greatly value Luis Enrique but that is seen as more difficult to pull off given the Spanish coach’s list of demands when Chelsea interviewed him.

“Postecoglou has earned huge admirers in the game for his expansive and entertaining work at Celtic, and there is hope that any deal would be smoother to do than with Feyenoord due to good relationships between involved parties. The Australian is commonly seen as one of the most exciting managers in world football.”

Postecoglou has spoken on multiple occasions about the growing interest in him from the Premier League.

“You think about it all,” the Melburnian said recently.

“When people say ‘he’s going to go down the road or somewhere else with the first offer he gets’ it’s not how I’m wired, it’s not how I think.

“For me, what it’s about is just trying to leave a mark wherever I am. I have done that with every football club I have been at. I want to do that at this football club and that is all that consumes me. I don’t think about the next step … or I need to go somewhere else … or I need to do this … or I need to consider other things. It is all there.

“You don’t go through life oblivious to it. It is not healthy to put the blinkers up and not know what is going on because that tests your desire to keep doing what you’re doing. If people are talking about my future or are interested in my future I will sit there and listen. It doesn’t mean I am going to jump at anything that comes my way. I am really passionate about what I do and the people close to me know what is most important to me, what drives me and what keeps me sort of happy in my role. I couldn’t be happier.”

Spurs sit eighth in the Premier League, facing the potential of no European football next season, and face relegation-threatened Leeds on the final day.

‘I’ve got the easy bit’: Question that left Ange fighting back tears after epic Celtic title triumph

Australian manager Ange Postecoglou delivered an emotional interview after his Celtic side secured back-to-back league titles with a 2-0 win over Heart of Midlothian.

Postecoglou claimed two trophies in his maiden campaign – a remarkable achievement given they had finished 25 points behind Rangers and won no other silverware in the season before he arrived.

This season, Postecoglou has matched his two trophies from last year, with another cup final still to come next month.

The 57-year-old was full of pride in his players as he spoke to Sky Sports on the field after the match.

Postecoglou said: “We’ve got a great opportunity to make this season really special. Like I’ve said, we’ve worked hard to get to this point. It’s great to win the two trophies and now, you know what? We want to win a third.

“I want to win it for the players, I want it for this football club, for the staff. It’s a reflection, I think, of the team they’ve been this year.”

Asked about his personal pride in the achievement, Postecoglou fought back the tears in an emotional display: “Yeah absolutely. Plenty of people in my circle make sacrifices. My family, my kids. Like I said, I’ve got the easy bit. I’m doing what I love.

“They’re the ones that are a constant support. Not just my family, my friends here, in Australia.

“The whole football club really embraced me from day one. For that, I take pride that I’m able to sort of give something back.”

The reporter noted Postecoglou’s visible emotion, with the Australian replying: “It’s not easy. You have to put everything into this. It’s a great responsibility. Any manager knows the responsibility you bear, but particularly at this football club.

“It takes a hell of a lot to get to the point where we are, massive effort from everyone. You do get emotional because you understand what’s gone into it.”

The manager paid tribute to his team with the humble claim that he had the ‘easy bit of just watching these guys’ as they chase the treble.

He said: “It’s a daily thing. And as I said we won it last year and there’s always a danger that maybe guys get ahead of themselves or complacent. And the first time we got back in pre-season, I had a real target to be stronger this year and be a better side.

“And they’ve done it every day. And as I say they’ve just been relentless in their approach and it’s a credit to the staff and players.

“I’ve had the easy bit of just watching these guys maintain a ridiculous standard of football and a fantastic commitment to this football club.”

Celtic were not at their sparkling best at Tynecastle, but Hearts were left with a mountain to climb when Alex Cochrane was sent off just before halftime.

Cochrane clipped Daizen Maeda as the Japanese international bore down on goal, but it took a VAR review for referee Nick Walsh to show the red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The visitors took their time to make the man advantage count, but it was fitting that Kyogo should score the decisive goal in winning Celtic a 53rd Scottish title.

The Japanese striker prodded home his 30th goal of the season and 50th for the club from Reo Hatate’s cross 23 minutes from time.

Kyogo injured himself in the act of scoring but his replacement Oh came on to make sure of the points.

The South Korean international cushioned Aaron Mooy’s cross into the far corner for his fourth goal since arriving in January.

Celtic could also surpass a club record of 116 goals in a league season after reaching 105 with four games to spare.

“I think we can get there,” said Celtic captain Callum McGregor, who has now won 18 major honours.

“We are certainly on the right track but we need to keep going.

“You get over the line, you get more experience, you want to do it again and in more style. I feel like we’ve done that this season.”

Besides Mooy, who picked up his assist after coming on as a substitute, two other Australians were in action – Hearts starters Kye Rowles and Cam Devlin. Nathaniel Atkinson was an unused substitute and young loanee Garang Kuol did not make the Hearts squad.

Hearts’ hopes of finishing third behind the Old Firm were at least aided by Rangers’ 1-0 win over Aberdeen.

Todd Cantwell scored the only goal at Ibrox to cut Celtic’s lead at the top to 13 points.

Aberdeen remain five points ahead of Hearts after their first defeat in eight games.

Celtic hammer rivals in brutal 27-minute blitz as Postecoglou on brink of another title

Celtic scored four goals and missed a penalty inside the opening half hour as they moved a step closer to retaining their Scottish Premiership title with a 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda and Matt O’Riley’s double inside 27 minutes of play ensured Celtic need only seven points from their last six matches to seal the title.

The win at Rugby Park restored their 12-point lead over second-placed Rangers.

“Our first half was outstanding — probably as well as we’ve played all year,” Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou told the BBC.

“Second half, we got a bit sloppy and never got into any rhythm. Overall, knowing the challenge here today, really pleased.

“Our football was brilliant, everyone was kind of in-sync. Our finishing composure, apart from the penalty, was excellent.”

Fraser Murray gifted Celtic a seventh-minute opener with a backpass that was intercepted by Furuhashi.

Joe Wright got back but could only delay the Japan striker, who checked back and drilled into the far corner.

Celtic were two ahead five minutes later following a lengthy spell of possession. Alistair Johnston got ahead of Murray on the right flank and crossed for Maeda to head home at the far post.

O’Riley made it 3-0 in the 18th minute after being found by Greg Taylor. Furuhashi missed a great chance to net his 30th goal of the season when he hit the post from the penalty spot after Christian Doidge had caught Taylor with a clumsy challenge.

Another mistake from Murray led to the fourth goal. The former Hibernian player’s backward clearance ultimately ended up with O’Riley, who shot into the top corner.

Wide player Murray was taken off in a double substitution that was all about damage limitation. Striker Doidge also made way as midfield enforcer Alan Power and defender Jeriel Dorsett came on.

The changes stemmed the tide of chances and the relegation-threatened home side pulled a goal back in the final minute of the half following a rare mistake from Callum McGregor.

Donnelly dispossessed the Celtic captain inside the box and finally netted after goalkeeper Joe Hart had saved from him and Danny Armstrong.

Oh Hyeon-gyu was given 45 minutes to impress the watching South Korea manager Jurgen Klinsmann as he replaced Furuhashi.

The striker just missed O’Riley’s cross as he slid in and later fired just wide at the near post after a cross from Rocco Vata.

Carl Starfelt missed Celtic’s best second-half chance when he sent a free header over from six yards and Tomoki Iwata went close from 25 yards.

Middlesbrough midfielder Riley McGree continues to earn the plaudits as his side continue marching towards the automatic promotion spots in the Championship with a 3-1 win over Queens Park Rangers.

The Aussie star won a penalty in the 77th minute when he burst into the box before cutting the ball back onto his left foot and was fouled in the process.

Although Boro striker Chuba Akpom would see his initial effort from the spot saved, he converted the rebound.

McGree then got the goal his performance deserved in second-half stoppage time.

Boro’s Matt Crooks avoided QPR’s off-side trap and picked up the ball on the left edge of the box before firing a pass across goal to the unmarked McGree.

The 24-year-old took a touch on his left foot before firing an effort into the back of the net and celebrating wildly.

TeessideLive’s Middlesbrough reporter Craig Johns was effusive in his praise for the Socceroo, giving him a score of eight in his player ratings.

“Another fabulous performance as he came to life in the second half with a typically crafty performance,” Johns wrote.

“As well as winning the penalty, he scored the third and was so unlucky not to have an early second-half opener which typified his ability to get into the right areas at the right times right now.”

McGree wasn’t the only Socceroo to score a goal on the weekend, as St Pauli’s Jackson Irvine found the back of the net for the first time since September.

Irvine popped up in the 73rd minute to glance a header home from a corner to score the equaliser for St Pauli in their 2. Bundesliga clash against FC Magdeburg, with Irvine’s side going on to win 2-1.

McGree and Irvine may have been the only two Aussie goalscorers on the weekend, but there were also a duo who chalked up assists.

St Mirren right back Ryan Strain whipped in a perfect corner that was thumped home by teammate Declan Gallagher in the 7th minute as they held on for a 1-0 win over Ross County.

However, Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic might lay claim to having the better assist.

In just his third start for the Terriers, the 20-year-old Aussie gloveman launched a ball high up the field to the left wing, where it fell to the feet of Jaheim Headley after Birmingham City’s Maxime Colin misjudged the flight of the ball.

Headley brought it down and then fired in an inch-perfect strike past Blues goalkeeper John Ruddy to give Huddersfield Town a crucial 2-1 win in new boss Neil Warnock’s first game in charge.

Bilokapic’s assist was also the first from a goalkeeper in the Championship this season and he also came up big with a key save to deny Birmingham’s Juninho Bacuna.

Also in the Championship, Blackpool midfielder Kenny Dougall played a crucial role for the Tangerines in a 1-0 win over Stoke City.

Blackpool Gazette writer Amos Wynn awarded Dougall a score of seven in his player ratings, writing that Dougall “did a pretty decent job providing an extra layer of cover for the back four” as Mick McCarthy’s side had just 30 per cent possession against the Potters.

It wasn’t all good news for Aussies in England though, as Harry Souttar couldn’t prevent Leicester City’s 3-0 loss against Manchester United.

The scoreline doesn’t quite reflect the danger the Foxes presented, with Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea called into action on several occasions.

But Brendan Rodgers’ side could do little to stop a red-hot Marcus Rashford from continuing his rich vein of form.

Leicester Mercury writer Jordan Blackwell noted the towering defender played well in the first half, but as Leicester opened up in the second period, life wasn’t as easy.

“He won headers, made blocks and slid in for excellent challenges in the first half, nearly getting himself a goal with a thumping effort just over the bar too,” Blackwell wrote.

“He was unfortunate to play Rashford onside for the first, and the second half was difficult for him, with City so open and United forwards attacking him with pace.”

Elsewhere around the grounds, Hibernian’s Jimmy Jeggo was key in the Edinburgh side’s 2-1 win over Kilmarnock that kept them within five points of local rivals Hearts, who sit in third place.

Awer Mabil got his first start since moving to Czech side Sparta Prague as they ran out 3-0 winners over Jablonec, although the winger was substituted at half-time.

Over in Japan, Mitch Langerak kept his first clean sheet of the J1 League season in Nagoya Grampus’ 1-0 win over Yokohama FC.

Massimo Luongo finally got his first league minutes of the 2022/23 campaign as he came off the bench for Ipswich Town in their 4-0 demolition of Forest Green Rovers.

Luongo logged 31 minutes of action in what is just his second senior appearance this season having played in the Trotters’ 0-0 draw against Burnley in the FA Cup.
