‘Absolutely gutted’: Disastrous injury confirmed for Socceroos giant in already-weakened spot

Harry Souttar has been dealt a devastating blow, with the Socceroos’ defender facing up to 12 months on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles.

Souttar suffered the injury in the final moments of Sheffield United’s 2-0 loss to Burnley in the Championship on Friday morning (AEDT).

The 26-year-old was sent for scans which confirmed the worst.

The incident occurred after Souttar took a heavy touch and lunged to clear the ball. It was immediately clear he was in discomfort and had to be helped off the pitch at Bramall Lane.

“He is absolutely gutted,” Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield after their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Monday morning.

“Devastated for him, he loved it here.

“He has been a great player to work with; great personality, great character.

“Big disappointment to lose the big fella because he has been incredible.”

It is the second serious injury setback for the towering centre back in three years. In November 2021, Souttar ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee during a World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in Sydney.

Remarkably, he returned to action with former club Stoke City just before the World Cup in Qatar 12-months later, playing a starring role as the Socceroos stunned the world with a run to the round of sixteen.

“Thanks to everyone at Sheffield United,” Souttar said on his Instagram account.

    “Amazing club with great people.

“Unfortunately, that’s me out for a while but I wish everyone at the club all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.

“Once a blade always a blade.”

This latest injury is a cruel blow. Souttar moved to Sheffield United on loan after struggling for game time at Premier League battlers Leicester City.

Wilder had placed significant trust in the 6-foot-7-inch centre-half, with Souttar starting 21 of Sheffield United’s 23 matches in the second-tier Championship before his injury.

His absence also creates a significant headache for Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.

With four crucial matches remaining in the third round of World Cup qualifying, the Socceroos currently sit second in Group C. Maintaining that position will secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The Socceroos face Indonesia in Sydney in March before an away game against China five days later. A clash with current group leaders Japanin Perth and a trip to face regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia awaits in June.

Popovic will now have to fill a Souttar sized hole in the heart of his defence for all those fixtures.

He’s also unable to call on 21-year-old centre back Alessandro Circati, who ruptured his ACL during a training session with Italian Serie A side Parma in late September.

It leaves Cameron Burgess, Kye Rowles and Hayden Matthews as the most likely options moving forward for Popovic.

Burgess is starting regularly for Ipswich Town in the Premier League while Rowles is doing the same with Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

However, both are left-footers and it remains to be seen how that could impact any potential partnership.

Kye Rowles celebrates scoring a goal against Lebanon with Jackson Irvine.Source: Getty Images

Matthews is right-footed and continues to grow in stature at Sydney FC.

The 20-year-old only signed his first professional contract earlier this year, but Popovic not only handed Matthews his Socceroos debut during the last international window in November but named him in the starting side in their last start 2-2 draw with Bahrain.

Souttar will be desperately hoping the Australians can navigate the next four fixtures and secure their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Even a 12-month recovery should see him back on the park with six months to go before the tournament gets underway.

The defender has left Sheffield and headed back to Leicester to start rehabilitation.

He is contracted to the Foxes until the end of the 2028 season giving him time to rebuild his career once back to full fitness.

  • West Ham fume at no-call after ‘rugby tackle’; Liverpool’s four-goal title statement: EPL Wrap

West Ham fume at no-call after ‘rugby tackle’; Liverpool’s four-goal title statement: EPL Wrap

Liverpool shrugged off the absence of Mohamed Salah to move five points clear at the top of the Premier League as Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez struck twice in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth.

The Reds’ title credentials will be tested while their star man is away with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

But Jota and Nunez stood up to be counted to secure a vital win at one of the form sides in the Premier League.

Bournemouth had lost just once in their previous nine games to climb comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

However, the Cherries were held at arm’s length in the first half before Jurgen Klopp’s men turned on the style after the break.

The visitors were restricted to pot shots in a first period devoid of clear chances.

Alexis Mac Allister and Nunez tested Neto from long range.

But the game turned on one moment of quality from Liverpool to break the deadlock on 49 minutes.

Jota’s first time pass put Nunez in the clear and the Uruguayan showed the poise he has often lacked in his Liverpool career to date to slot into the far corner.

Substitute Cody Gakpo then teed up Jota to fire in at the near post 20 minutes from time to end the game as a contest.

Jota was more fortunate for his second as the Portuguese fluffed his initial effort from Conor Bradley’s cross only for the ball to sit up for a second attempt which he drilled low and hard across Neto.

Nunez had scored just once in his previous 16 Liverpool appearances since scoring the winner against Bournemouth in the League Cup in early November.

The confidence he gained from finding the net earlier in the half showed as he slid in perfectly to meet Joe Gomez’s cross and round off a fine afternoon for Liverpool in stoppage time.

Manchester City have a game in hand on their title rivals to be able to shave Liverpool’s advantage at the top down to two points.

But after a season in the doldrums saw Klopp’s men slip to fifth last year, there is little doubt that they are once again the biggest threat to City’s crown as champions.

DEBATE OVER ‘RUGBY TACKLE’ AFTER NO-CALL IN CHAOTIC DRAW

Oli McBurnie scored a penalty 12 minutes into stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw for Sheffield United against West Ham in chaotic climax at Bramall Lane.

Both sides were also shown red cards in injury time as West Ham threw away the chance to close to within six points of the top four.

Twice David Moyes’ men led through Maxwel Cornet and James Ward-Prowse’s penalty.

But Ben Brereton Diaz’s strike on his Premier League debut for the Blades and McBurnie’s late spot-kick edged them to within seven points of safety.

The visitors were without the injured Lucas Paqueta and Michail Antonio, suspended Said Benrahma and Mohammed Kudus, who is representing Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Their absence was felt as West Ham failed to gain control of the game in blustery conditions.

But they went in front when Cornet smashed home his first goal for the club after Danny Ings’ deflected shot looped up at the back post.

Diaz failed to score a single goal during his six-month spell at Villarreal, but has made an quick impact on his return to English football.

The Chile international reacted quickest to fire home the rebound after Alphonse Areola denied William Osula.

Diaz missed a great chance at the start of the second period to turn the game around.

But Sheffield United looked destined for a 16th defeat in 21 Premier League games this season when Gustavo Hamer’s ill-timed challenge on Ings conceded a penalty 12 minutes from time and Ward-Prowse coolly slotted home the spot-kick.

The home side’s hopes appeared to have gone when Rhian Brewster was shown a straight red card for a wild challenge on Emerson Palmieri after a VAR review.

However, Vladmir Coufal was booked due to West Ham’s protests that the referee only initially showed a yellow card for that challenge and the Czech was then sent-off for a second booking moments later.

From the resulting free-kick, Areola was penalised for colliding with McBurnie as he rushed off his line to try and punch the ball to safety.

The French goalkeeper then had to be replaced by Lukasz Fabianski leading to a lengthy delay.

McBurnie, though, kept his nerve to drill the penalty low and hard into the corner.

The drama was not over as West Ham appeals for another penalty were controversially waived away when Jarrod Bowen was hauled over in the box by Anel Ahmedhodzic.

“The West Ham bench are fuming,” Sky Sports reporter Peter Smith said.

Former West Ham players Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, both agreed a penalty should have been awarded while giving their take on the drama for TNT Sports.

    “Absolutely [a] penalty,” Cole said.

“In the last minute of a game, [defenders] have got to keep [their] composure.

“Robinson realises at that moment, and then the panic kicks in. He puts his arms on arm; he’s not looking at the ball. I can’t see how they’ve not looked at that. That’s a rugby tackle.

“The referee has made three massive decisions that have lit this place up. The atmosphere was white hot. He probably just lost his nerve at that time. You need to be a brave referee in situations like that and just referee the game.”

“[Robinson] is not looking at the ball — he’s not even looking at Bowen,” Ferdinand added.

“He’s got his hands on him. His back is to play, and we can see his number with the ball coming from the opposite side. I don’t know how they haven’t looked at that and gone, ‘that’s a stonewall penalty’. If they called that [a penalty], this place would have erupted.”

West Ham manager Moyes was clearly frustrated post-game but avoided getting himself in trouble by saying too much about the decision.

“I’m certainly not going to talk about any referees. I don’t want to get myself in trouble,” he said.

“You should ask the referee [about these decisions]. We’ve got to a stage now where we are settling for a level of officiating where we are all shrugging our shoulders and saying: ‘OK.’ I’m shrugging my shoulders again, we don’t know what they are going to do.”

The frustrated Hammers had to settle for a point that edges them three points clear of Manchester United in sixth.

    REDS LAND ‘LATE BLOOMER’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said on Friday he was happy to sign “late bloomer” Wataru Endo, with the Japan midfielder arriving at Anfield after Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia opted to join Chelsea instead.

No fee has been disclosed for the 30-year-old Endo’s “long-term contract” but reports valued his move from Bundesliga club Stuttgart at £19 million ($24 million, 22 million euros).

Liverpool have been on the hunt for a defensive midfielder since both captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho made the move to Saudi Arabia during the ongoing transfer window.

The Reds’ attempts to sign Brighton’s Caicedo and Southampton’s Lavia failed, with both players heading to big-spending Chelsea.

Liverpool have finally got a new number six.Source: AFP

But Klopp, speaking ahead of Saturday’s match against Bournemouth — the Reds’ first home game this season following last week’s draw at Chelsea — told a press conference he had long been an admirer of Endo.

“First of all, I’m really happy that we can have an agreement with a club and a player which is really cool,” Klopp said.

“I am from Germany, I watch a lot of Bundesliga, I’ve known him since he is at Stuttgart, I liked him pretty much from the start when he started playing there.

“He’s a little bit of a late bloomer and usually for us for the way our owners see it, he was already too old when he joined Stuttgart but I obviously have a different view on that and I always liked him.”

On Liverpool’s transfer market issues, Klopp added: “The last week was obviously a tricky one, no doubt about that. But when you have a problem you can stick to the problem or find a solution, I’m more than happy to have the solution.

“The transfer business is like that — you talk to people, the players and clubs and sometimes it works out and sometimes not.

“There’s nothing else to say about that. All things that were said in these conversations, they stay between me and the specific other party, nothing to say about that, really.”

    BLUES SIGN ANOTHER MIDFIELD SUPERSTAR

Chelsea have signed Romeo Lavia on a seven-year contract from Southampton it was announced Friday in the latest addition to their squad after the teenage midfielder rejected a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.

No fee has been disclosed but British media reports stated the deal was £53 million rising to £58 million ($A115m).

Lavia, 19, is the eighth player to join Chelsea in the current transfer window, with the London club, now owned by a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly, having spent more than £350 million — although they have sold several high-value footballers as well.

Belgium international Lavia has made 29 Premier League appearances and has arrived at Stamford Bridge following south coast side Southampton’s relegation from English football’s top-flight last season.

“I can’t wait to meet all my new teammates and build a chemistry together to achieve great things together,” Lavia told Chelsea’s website.

He is now set to compete for a place in Chelsea’s midfield with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo — the two most expensive players in English football transfer history.

Caicedo arrived from Brighton earlier this month for a reported fee of up to £115 million, surpassing the £107 million the Blues paid Portuguese giants Benfica for Fernandez back in January

    VILLA LAND ITALIAN GUN

Aston Villa signed Italy midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Galatasaray on Friday.

Zaniolo, 24, is the Premier League club’s fourth signing since the end of last season.

The deal reportedly involves an option for Villa to make the move permanent. “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the loan signing of Italian international Nicolo Zaniolo,” a statement on the club’s website said.

Zaniolo spent five years with Roma and scored the winning goal in their Europa Conference League final success in 2022.

He left for Galatasaray in February and helped the club win the Turkish league title.

Zaniolo, who has 13 caps for Italy, joins Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby as new faces in Unai Emery’s squad.

Villa were thrashed 5-1 at Newcastle in their Premier League opener last weekend and host Everton in their second game on Sunday.

‘It’s disgusting’: The alarming issue plaguing the World Cup

An alarming statistic in women’s football has led to England captain Leah Williamson begging for a new approach to the sport.

Williamson is among a whopping 37 players absent from this year’s Women’s World Cup due to knee injuries and particularly ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL).

Speaking on British Radio, the 2022 European Championships winner said it is time for urgent change.

“If you ever needed a wake-up call, I’d say this year with the ACLs is it,” she said.

“If nobody wakes up now then we’ve got a bit of a problem.

“ACLs alone there’s 37 players missing from this World Cup, which is disgusting.

“There’s so many (differences between men and women). Our hips are aligned slightly differently, hormones and stress all contribute.”

Williamson is one of three England players, along with Beth Mead and Keira Walsh, to have picked up serious knee injuries.

Williamson, Mead and Fran Kirby sustained injuries prior to the World Cup, while Walsh sustained a knee injury in England’s 1-0 victory over Denmark.

Arsenal star Williamson wants to see an immediate improvement for how female talent is prepared in this new era of professionalism in the women’s game.

“The women’s game, my generation, one day we’re a kid playing football and the next we’re a professional,” she said.

Kyah Simon is yet to regain full fitness after her ACL injury. (Photo by Cameron Spencer/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“We got form training a few times a week (before moving) to training every day, playing Champions League, World Cups, European Cups.

“Until it changes to be more like the boys, where they’re literally bred for it from day one of being signed at six years old, this will happen more.

“We’re not ready for that. There’s so much now that we need to make more focused to women or this will happen over and over again.

“Our bodies are completely different, the studies around professional sports women are few and far between.”

Australia’s Chloe Logarzo, Ellie Carpenter and Kyah Simon have all suffered ACL injuries, with doubts still remaining over Simon’s fitness.

The Dutch are also without their all-time leading women’s goal scorer Vivianne Miedema.

Man arrested for T-shirt referencing Hillsborough disaster at FA Cup final

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing a public order offence for wearing a T-shirt referencing the Hillsborough disaster.

An image was posted to social media of the man wearing a Manchester United shirt with the words “not enough” and the number 97.

That’s the number of mostly Liverpool supporters who were killed in the 15 April, 1989 crush at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England,

The fatal incident took place during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Along with the 97 deaths, 766 people were injured when fans rushed into two standing-only central pens, leading to a crowd crush.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service issued a statement in response to the social media post of the man, writing: “#ARREST | We are aware of this and have worked proactively with officials at [Wembley Stadium] to identify the individual. He has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken into custody.”

A photo posted on social media later appeared to show the man handcuffed and being taken into custody.

“Let this be a warning to anyone else thinking of doing anything similar. And that goes for using ANY tragedy,” Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance posted on Twitter.

“Vile” chants and songs related to disasters have marred the game.

Managers Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag both recently joined forces to try and stamp out the practice.

Hag said: “It is unacceptable to use the loss of life – in relation to any tragedy – to score points, and it is time for it to stop.

“Those responsible tarnish not only the reputation of our clubs but also, importantly, the reputation of themselves, the fans, and our great cities.”

Klopp added: “We do want the occasion to be partisan and we do want the atmosphere to be electric,” the Liverpool manager said.

“What we do not want is anything that goes beyond this and this applies especially to the kind of chants that have no place in football.”

The FA, Premier League and football clubs have also made multiple calls for supporters not to make references to the Hillsborough disaster, as well as the Heysel Stadium crowd disaster of 1985 and the Munich air crash of 1958, The Independent reports.

Eight Manchester United players and three staff members died in the Munich disaster while 39 fans died in the tragedy at Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

  • Fallen giant’s ‘fairytale’ as son of cult hero sparks playoffs madness in 123rd minute

Fallen giant’s ‘fairytale’ as son of cult hero sparks playoffs madness in 123rd minute

Sheffield Wednesday is going back to the EFL Championship after Josh Windass scored in the dying moments of extra time to beat Barnsley 1-0 at Wembley.

Windass’ diving header from the penalty spot in the 123rd minute of the playoff match put the Owls 1-0 up over its promotion rival, who were down to 10 men.

The goal, scored with six seconds of extra time to play, further cemented the Windass name into English football’s playoff folklore, after his father, Dean, scored a late winner at Wembley that earnt Hull City promotion to the Premier League 15 years ago.

Barnsley was playing with ten men for more than 70 minutes after Adam Phillips was controversially sent off early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Phillips lunged in on Lee Gregory and copped a straight red card from referee Tim Robinson.

Five minutes later, Barnsley came agonisingly to a goal when Liam Kitching cleverly diverted a shot onto the Wednesday crossbar.

A stunning extra-time goal from Wednesday substitute Will Vaulks, where his first-time shot flew into the top corner, was disallowed when assistant referee Akil Howson raised his flag for offside.

But the 44,000 Wednesday fans celebrated in style when Windass replicated his father’s heroics in the dying moments of the match, ensuring the Owls returned to the Championship after a two-year hiatus.

“It’s the stuff dreams are made of,” Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore said.

“You couldn‘t write it. It finished a titanic game that ebbed and flowed both ways.

“This is a special moment for me because it means so many people in Sheffield are happy and positive. When a football club does well you see the knock-on it has in the city, in the community.

“It goes to show that the impossible can be achieved. It‘s a fairytale story.”

Wednesday finished the regular League One season third on 96 points, the highest total in EFL history that did not lead to automatic promotion.

The Owls lost 4-0 in the first leg of their semi-final against Peterborough, but miraculously fought back the following week to book their spot in the playoff against Barnsley. Monday’s victory, which Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan called “the best moment of my life”, wrapped up one the most dramatic paths to promotion in the league’s history.
