‘F***ing insane’: PL fairytale the real deal as Reds silenced; 10-min disaster rocks City — Wrap

Nottingham Forest’s fairytale Premier League season took another big step on Tuesday when the former European champions secured a draw over league leaders Liverpool at home.

Liverpool dominated the night at the City Ground but was still forced to come from behind to settle for a draw after New Zealand striker Chris Wood put Forest in front after eight minutes.

His strike came against the run of play and took his remarkable season tally to 13 goals in 21 games.

Forest still dreamt of clinching a miraculous win well into the second half, until Diogo Jota — who had been on the field for just 22 seconds — nodded home for Liverpool from a corner.

Jota continued to make an impact, and Liverpool kept Forest under siege, but the underdogs escaped with a point to delight the home crowd.

Liverpool remains six points clear of anyone on the Premier League table.

The result also keeps Forest in second-place after 21 games, one point ahead of Arsenal, and three ahead of Chelsea, who needed a 95th minute goal from Reece James to save a draw at home to Bournemouth.

Title rivals Manchester City, meanwhile, missed the major opportunity to close the gap by coughing up a 2-0 lead to Brentford, who stunned the champions late with 82nd and 92nd goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard.

The biggest result of the night, however, belonged to Forest whose redemption in England’s top flight continues to gather steam.

Their fairytale run has been spearheaded by a career year from striker Wood, the 33-year-old Kiwi who has been among the Premier League’s most prolific goal scorers this season.

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson noted that the City Ground “erupted” when Wood scored against the run of play.

“Forest hadn’t been out of their half in the first eight minutes. I cannot believe they are 1-0 up. They had been ripped to shreds,” he noted.

Clinton Morrison, former Republic of Ireland striker, said on the BBC: “This is why Forest are good. You don’t see them for the first five minutes and then they hit.”

Forest’s remarkable run of six successive league wins prior to Liverpool’s visit had sparked claims they could emulate Leicester’s fairytale title triumph in 2016.

This impressive performance suggested that dream should not be completely discounted, even if Liverpool remain firm favourites.

Earlier this month, Forest marked the 50th anniversary of Brian Clough’s appointment, which triggered the club’s incredible rise from the second tier to English champions in 1978 and European Cup winners in 1979 and 1980.

    – Inspired Sels –

Back then, Forest and Liverpool were England’s pre-eminent forces, jousting for domestic and continental silverware on a regular basis.

For the first time since 1979, Liverpool and Forest were meeting with both teams in the top three and the retro feel was palpable on the banks of the River Trent.

Forest fans, red and white scarves twirling in the raucous atmosphere, had barely finished a stirring pre-match rendition of Mull of Kintyre before their team delivered a statement of intent that could easily have come from the Clough era.

Forest have proved lethal on the counter-attack this season and they caught Liverpool with a punishing sucker-punch from their first attack in the eighth minute.

Anthony Elanga’s pin-point pass caught Virgil van Dijk flat-footed as Wood ran in behind the Liverpool defender.

Keeping his composure, Wood slotted a clinical finish under Alisson Becker. Slot’s men dominated possession after that but struggled to break down a resolute Forest defence well marshalled by Serbian centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.

Milenkovic and Murillo had stopped Liverpool mustering a shot on target in the first half as Mohamed Salah was held in check.

Liverpool drew level after a rare slip from Nuno’s defence in the 66th minute. Kostas Tsimikas’s corner looped into penalty area and Jota, one of the smallest players on the pitch, was given space to glance his header past Sels from five yards.

It was an inspired substitution from Slot, who had sent on Jota and Tsimikas just 22 seconds earlier.

Jota almost struck again, weaving through the Forest defence before Sels made a fine save to deny the Portugal forward.

Sels produced an even better stop moments later, throwing himself in front of Jota’s powerful close-range strike.

In a frantic finale, Dominik Szoboszlai’s blast forced another good save from Sels, while Salah’s curler was tipped over by the inspired Forest keeper.

There was nearly a dramatic winner for Liverpool but Salah’s shot was cleared off the line by Ola Aina before Sels clawed Cody Gakpo’s shot to safety.

MAN CITY BLOW LATE LEAD AT BRENTFORD, CHELSEA HELD BY BOURNEMOUTH

Manchester City’s upturn came undone as Brentford hit back to draw 2-2 on Tuesday, while Chelsea were also held by the same scoreline at home by Bournemouth.

Phil Foden’s double had City on course for a fourth consecutive win after a run of just one victory in 13 games.

However, the English champions’ defending was not convincing all night and they were punished as Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard struck in the final 10 minutes to earn Brentford a point.

Foden’s return to the form that saw him crowned Premier League player of the year last season was the one positive for City.

But Pep Guardiola will reflect on a missed opportunity to make up ground on the top four.

A point leaves City still down in sixth.

Erling Haaland and Savinho struck the woodwork for City either side of half-time.

However, Brentford were a constant threat on the counter-attack and only a brilliant last ditch tackle from Josko Gvardiol denied Wissa the opener for the home side.

Moments later, Foden produced a brilliant deft touch from Kevin De Bruyne’s inviting delivery to score for just the third time in the Premier League this season.

Brentford then saw a host of chances to level come and go before City punished them with a sucker punch.

Savinho’s powerful effort was parried by Mark Flekken into the path of Foden, who smashed in his fourth goal in five league games.

Brentford did finally get some reward for their attacking endeavour when Wissa slotted in from Mads Roerslev’s cross to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.

And they completed the comeback in stoppage time when Norgaard’s header had too much power for Stefan Ortega.

    – Reece rescues Chelsea –

Chelsea’s miserable run extended to five league games without a win but they were grateful for captain Reece James’ stoppage-time equaliser salvaging a point for them against the Cherries.

Cole Palmer’s cool finish from Nicolas Jackson’s through ball had given Chelsea the perfect start.

But Bournemouth hit back despite losing both their strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal to long-term injuries.

Justin Kluivert levelled from the penalty spot, before Antoine Semenyo’s blistering near-post effort put the visitors in front.

James has endured another injury-hit season but showed the quality he possesses by curling home a free-kick at the death.

West Ham boss Graham Potter enjoyed a winning home debut as Fulham were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium.

The Hammers shrugged off an injury crisis in attacking areas to score twice in two first-half minutes.

Carlos Soler pounced on a wayward pass by Andreas Pereira to sweep in the opener before Tomas Soucek fired in from Aaron Wan Bissaka’s cross.

Alex Iwobi’s intended cross evaded everyone on its way in at the start of the second half to give Fulham hope.

Lucas Paqueta restored West Ham’s two-goal cushion to take Potter’s men above Manchester United and Tottenham into 12th.

Iwobi pulled another goal back for Fulham, but defeat leaves them still in ninth.

‘Team we want to be’: Ange’s ‘best in Europe’ call as Spurs impress in pressure-relieving win

Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou has insisted his side are among the best pressing teams “in Europe” after two goals from turnovers helped his side beat Brentford, a result that has released some of the pressure on the Australian.

The former Socceroos boss has come under fire over the opening rounds of the new season for a myriad of reasons, namely their poor results despite playing well, susceptibility to conceding from set-pieces and a perception that Postecoglou lacks a tactical Plan B.

Such heavy criticism, which included suggestions on British radio that he would be sacked by Christmas, were only fuelled by Postecoglou’s defiance following last week’s North London Derby loss to Arsenal, a game decided by a set-piece goal, and his insistence he “always wins things” in his second season in charge of the club.

For these reasons Spurs needed a result, as opposed to simply a good performance, against Brentford to hush the outside noise and kick their campaign into life.

And while the game couldn’t have started any worse for the Londoners, who conceded a wonderfully hooked volley from Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo after 23 seconds, Spurs showed similar levels of fight and resilience that they did during their comeback midweek League Cup win over Coventry.

Club-record signing Dominic Solanke opened his Premier League account with Spurs after eight minutes, with his goal coming as a result of strong press forcing Brentford’s backline into a misplaced pace.

From there Spurs got a foothold on the contest, scoring next through Brennan Johnson just before the half hour mark, another goal created after Spurs’ press forced a turnover just inside Brentford’s half.

James Maddison’s 85th minute dink over Mark Flekken ensured the three points stayed in London and alleviated some of the pressure clouding the Spurs manager.

Speaking in the tunnel post-game, Postecoglou was delighted more by the fact his side got the result than the fact they played well.

“We played really well today,” he said.

“I mean we’ve played well all season but today we had a real sort of energy about us that was the kind of team we want to be.”

While the 59-year-old felt his side left a few more goals out there, he was proud at how Spurs recovered from their early setback to run away with the win.

“We got off to not the best start, but it’s almost like it never happened, the boys picked up from there,” he said.

“The boys didn’t let it affect them at all.”

Former Spurs captain Michael Dawson labelled the win as a “convincing performance (and) convincing result.”

“(Spurs) reacted brilliantly, they really, really did. From that moment there was only going to be one team on the front foot (who) was going to win his football match,” he said.

One of the most pleasing factors of the win to Postecoglou was the intensity and urgency his side showed with and without the ball against Brentford, whose tactics the Australian felt played in his side’s hands.

“The boys went at it. We knew Brentford were going to be aggressive with and without the ball (and) we love that part of the game,” he said in his post-match press conference.

“We thought if we really brought our own energy and intensity that we know we can with and without the ball we could cause them a lot of problems. And we did.”

It comes one week after a frustrating North London derby loss to Arsenal, a game Postecoglou felt was slowed down by their opponents, much to Spurs’ frustration.

Heading into the Brentford game, he revealed he’d instructed his side to exert themselves on the contest and not let history repeat itself.

“We spoke about it during the week we’re at our best when we play quickly and obviously the opposition are going to try and stop us from doing that,” he said.

“From our perspective the more times when we’re in control of the ball (and) can play at our tempo it’s better.”

A particular part of his side’s performance Postecoglou was pleased with was the effectiveness of their press, which contributed to their two opening goals.

The Australian feels that his side are not only “probably the best in the league” at pressing opponents but also “one of the best in Europe.”

According to data from FBref, Postecoglou’s point mightn’t be too wide of the mark as his side’s 18 tackles in the attacking third rank third among sides in Europe’s top five leagues, behind only Angres and Brest of France.

One flashpoint of the contest which played into Spurs’ favour occurred just before the hour mark when Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario appeared to handle the ball outside of his penalty area, only for referee John Brooks to not blow a foul, or penalty, for Brentford.

According to The Athletic, the video assistant referee did not intervene as the handball did not deny a goal or a goalscoring opportunity.

Asked about the incident post-game, Postecoglou said “I saw exactly what you saw.”

“If it wasn’t an obvious goalscoring opportunity which means even if he’d been penalised it would’ve been a free kick and that’s a big turning point?

“I guess we were lucky to get the result.”

Whenever players, particularly strikers, are signed for as much as Solanke there is always an external expectation that they hit the ground running at breakneck speed, much like Erling Haaland in his opening months at City.

For Solanke, few could doubt the effectiveness of his general play in recent games but the No.9 still required a goal to get the monkey off his back and remove any doubts he can live up his price tag.

Postecoglou believes “people are obligated to take their time” to settle in and revealed the striker is still yet to his 100%.

“Dom’s still working his way to fitness. You could see he was out of gas at the end,” Postecoglou said.

“He’s going to be a great player for us.”

The Australian doubled down on his praise of the No.9 in his post-match press conference, highlighting his importance when Spurs play high-intensity sides like Brentford.

“I thought he led the line well (and was) important for us today as a link up there because we knew they’d go pretty aggressive man to man marking (and) he was going to have to hold the ball up for us, and I thought he did that really well,” Postecoglou said.

Speaking on Optus Sport’s post-game coverage former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison believes Solanke’s strike was the best thing about the Brentford win for Spurs.

“When you pay good money for your centre forward you’re always looking for that first goal,” he said.

“I don’t care how it comes… the taps in are the best goals. He’s in the right place at the right time.”

Spurs now sit 10th on seven points, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with a chance to continue rising up the table against a hapless Manchester United side next weekend.

PL’s title race was inevitable. One call will spark rivals’ ‘special’ overhaul — and it’s getting close

It took just 78 seconds to spark ecstasy in Manchester and agony some 207 miles away in north London.

Phil Foden’s thumping opener against West Ham United was the goal notification Arsenal fans had dreaded, knowing a Manchester City victory would secure the Premier League title for a fourth consecutive season.

Foden added a second in the 18th minute, twisting the knife even further into Arsenal as they watched Everton’s Idrissa Gueye score a deflected free-kick to take a shock lead at the Emirates Stadium.

Although Arsenal would come back to win, it was all in vain as City marched on to secure a 3-1 victory over the Hammers.

The win meant City became the first team to win four-straight league titles and their sixth in their last seven seasons.

But this latest triumph is made all the more remarkable by the fact they spent just three games on top of the ladder from November 12.

It followed a trend from last season in which Pep Guardiola’s side sat second for 30 of the first 32 games before leapfrogging Arsenal into first with just six matches remaining.

If it wasn’t evident before, it certainly is now: City are, quite simply, inevitable.

Another element to City’s title charge is how they once again finished top of the pile after winning the treble last season, including their first Champions League.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Gary Neville said his “most difficult season” was the one after the Red Devils claimed the treble because it “took so much out” of him.

“What is City’s cause this year?” Neville asked.

“They have achieved utopia. They cannot do any more.

“When you have fought so long and hard to win a Champions League like they have and won the treble, there has got to be that little bit of a sigh of relief.”

Perhaps the cause of making history once more was the key motivational factor for Guardiola.

But City are not done rewriting the record books just yet because victory in the FA Cup final would make Guardiola’s side the first to win consecutive Premier League titles and FA Cup finals.

Given City’s sheer dominance since Guardiola’s arrival in the Premier League, one must wonder what more his title rivals can do to knock the heavyweights off the throne.

Jurgen Klopp couldn’t keep up the fight, conceding he was “running out of energy” when he announced he’d leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

Given how close Arsenal came last season, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta had hoped the big money signings of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz would be the boost needed to pip City to the post.

Yet an improved Premier League season across the board was still not enough, sparking former Premier League veteran Clinton Morrison to claim Arsenal will never win the league until Guardiola decides to throw in the towel.

“They are not far away,” Morrison said on BBC Radio’s Friday Football Social.

“They need Pep to go and when he goes they will win the title. It’s as plain and simple as that.

“Arsenal have been fantastic and any other season, or if Manchester City weren’t in the league, they win the Premier League because they have been fantastic under Mikel Arteta.”

Well, by Guardiola’s admission, it doesn’t seem like Arsenal will need to wait much longer.

“The reality is I’m closer to leaving than to staying,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“It’s eight years, will be nine. Right now my feeling is I want to stay next season. We talked with the club, we have time to talk next season because I have to see the players as well, if they follow me, they follow us.

“I want to stay next season. During the season, we will talk. But after eight, nine years …”

Even if Guardiola decides to stay a little longer and continually find new causes to spur his star-studded squad on even further, Arsenal will be ready to pounce on any slip-ups.

The Gunners possess one of the youngest squads in the league and, most importantly, have now had two experiences of what’s required in a title race.

Gabriel and William Saliba have developed into one of the best centre back pairings in the league while the midfield triumvirate of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey is one teams across Europe view with envy.

Throw in attacking options like Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, it’s easy to see why Arsenal fans are so optimistic about the future.

As the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel wrote, “any sense of disappointment was quickly replaced by an impression of pride” once it was confirmed Arsenal had finished second once again.

“The Emirates Stadium was at its loudest as Michael Oliver blew for full time,” Mokbel said.

“They know their team is on the cusp of something special.

“Indeed, in a few weeks time, as the battle scars of another failure have healed, those dreams will burn brightly once again.

“They are so close and the reaction of the supporters to a heartbreaking disappointment suggests they believe they’ll eventually reach the promised land.”

The Times’ James Gheerbrant echoed the sentiment.

“It will still hurt that their name will not be engraved on the trophy, that their wait for a title will stretch into a 21st year, that as Manchester City’s supremacy hardens into dynasty, theirs recedes further into memory,” Gheerbrant wrote.

“But this felt, by the end, like an uplifting occasion, not a funereal one; not a day to mourn how close this young team had come, but instead to celebrate how far.”

Although City remained the dominant force for yet another season, the scenes in sunny north London showed that this Arsenal team are inching ever closer towards a breakthrough title and everyone at the club knows it.

‘One of the best comebacks ever’: Fallen giants erase FOUR-goal deficit in last-gasp chaos

Sheffield Wednesday booked their spot in the League One play-off final in the most dramatic of circumstances, coming back from 4-0 down on aggregate to beat Peterborough on penalties.

Wednesday copped a brutal beating in the first leg of their play-off semi final as Peterborough, who went into the contest as heavy underdogs, stunned the football world.

Roared on by a packed house at Hillsborough in Sheffield, the home side scored as early as the ninth minute thanks to a Michael Smith penalty.

One goal then became two in the 25th minute when Lee Gregory got on the scoresheet and got the travelling Peterborough fans sweating a little more nervously.

With 45 minutes remaining for Wednesday to complete the most remarkable of comebacks, Darren Moore’s side put the pedal to the floor and threw the kitchen sink at Peterborough.

Centre back Reece James got Wednesday’s third in the 71st minute, setting up a thrilling finale as Hillsborough came to life.

Despite Moore sending on several attacking subs, Peterborough continued to repel wave after wave of blue and white striped shirts.

But there was to be one final twist deep in second half stoppage time.

Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks fired a long-range throw-in into the box which Peterborough cleared only as far as Barry Bannan who was lurking just outside the 18-yard box.

Bannan laid the ball off to a teammate, with a cross floated up to substitute Aden Flint in the area.

He nodded it down and Liam Palmer swept the ball home into the net to spark absurd scenes as fans spilt onto the field to celebrate.

Palmer’s effort turned out to be practically the last kick of the game in normal time, as Wednesday’s 4-0 scoreline pushed the contest into extra time.

Despite the home side’s momentum, they were pegged back when Gregory conceded an own goal on the stroke of halftime in extra time.

But in a game which had already spawned so much drama, there was more yet to come as Callum Paterson scored the equaliser in the tie and Wednesday’s fifth on the night in the 112th minute.

From then on, both teams were relatively content to take it to a penalty shootout.

Wednesday skipper Bannan won the toss to decide which end the shootout would happen and who would go first as the Owls’ Michael Smith stepped up first and coolly slotted home.

Unfortunately Peterborough’s Dan Butler, who stepped up to take the visitors’ second spot kick, smacked his effort against the bar and was the only player from either side to miss.

The Owls’ Jack Hunt was the man who scored the winning penalty as Wednesday fans giddy with joy rushed onto the field to celebrate.

Considering no team in play-off history had ever overturned a deficit of three goals or more, those fans had every right to sing long into the night.

Sky Sports pundits Clinton Morrison and Don Goodman were lost for words at the incredible scenes they’d witnessed at Hillsborough.

“No one gave Sheffield Wednesday a chance, no one. At 4-0, you think the game’s over,” Morrison said.

“They didn’t show their spirit in the first leg. They were knocked down and they came back.

“Credit must go to Darren Moore. He was under huge pressure to deliver and his players have delivered. I can’t believe we’ve been here to witness this. This will go down as one of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen.”

Goodman added: “I don’t know how they’ve turned this around. Honestly, I really do not know how that has just happened. Overturning a one-goal deficit is hard enough, two is the most that anybody has ever done. But to turn over a four-goal deficit is a miracle.

“Your heart goes out to Peterborough, but you cannot help but admire the determination of this Wednesday club, players, coaching staff, owner. But those fans have driven those boys over that line.”

Sheffield Wednesday will now play either Barnsley or Bolton Wanderers in the League One play-off final.

City heap pressure on as Spurs rattled | 02:09

ARSENAL’S ‘HUGE MISTAKE’ COULD PROVE A TITLE TURNING POINT

Bukayo Saka held his head in his hands and Mikel Arteta trudged dejectedly down the tunnel after Arsenal’s damaging 2-2 draw at West Ham.

The Gunners, who had raced into a 2-0 lead at the London Stadium, dropped points they could ill afford to lose in their title duel with a Manchester City team firing on all cylinders.

They also suffered the pain of a Saka penalty miss.

It is the second consecutive week they have dropped points from two goals up as questions over their mental fortitude grow by the day.

“We made a huge mistake to stop playing with the same purpose to score the third and fourth one and just thinking we could play around them and just looked too easy,” Arteta said.

“We didn’t understand what the game required in the moment. We need that ruthless mindset in those moments to go and kill a team. When the game is there for the killing you have to do it. Today we haven’t.

“Very disappointing. The way we started was superb again, we were in total control, then we lost purpose.”

Former England defender Matt Upson said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “The key for them now is don’t let the doubt creep in.

“The job for Mikel Arteta and his staff is to not allow the players to feel down or negative about themselves.

“But the manner of how Arsenal lost that two-goal lead will be a concern for Arteta, who looked a bit of a dejected figure, understandably.

“You have to keep winning and this fixture was a massive opportunity – they started brilliantly but they’ve just let it slip away again. What that means for them psychologically moving forward is going to be interesting to see.”

Arsenal are still four points clear of second-placed City, who have a game in hand, but there is a growing feeling that the Gunners’ young squad are feeling the strain of the title race.

Pep Guardiola’s team have won 10 matches in a row in all competitions and have title-winning nous after dominating the Premier League in recent seasons.

Sunday’s result sets up a massive potential title-decider between the top two teams at the Etihad on April 27 AEDT.

City play Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final this week, before facing Championship club Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final on the weekend. That means they’ll have another game in hand on Arsenal by the time they return to league action in the blockbuster battle.

City manager Pep Guardiola said this weekend “[it is] a final against them in the next Premier League game … If we lose this game it will be almost over.”

But if Arsenal do fail to win this season despite leading the league for the vast majority of the campaign, how bad would it be for the young Gunners?

Manchester United great Gary Neville said on Sky Sports: “They would have snapped your hand off to be in this position at the start of the season. Arsenal finishing second would still be an unbelievable season.”

But Roy Keane replied: “Everyone will get stronger next year. They might not be in this position. It would be a disaster.”

Keane added: ‘It would be a terrible season. They’re out of every cup competition. 2-0 up this week, 2-0 up today. It’s a huge disappointment.”

Ex-Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added: “You are not allowed to lose points today. This will hurt more than losing to Man City. The beginning of the season doesn’t matter. To lose it now would be a disaster.”

For now, however, the focus is clear.

“We have to remember we are still top of the league with everything in our own hands,” captain Martin Odegaard said.

UNITED PULL CLEAR IN TOP-FOUR RACE AS STAR ANSWERS CRITICS

Third-placed Manchester United are now firmly on course to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League. After three straight league wins they are six points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham.

United travelled to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on Sunday (local time) without their injured first-choice centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as well as topscorer Marcus Rashford.

But Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen (in his first appearance since January) pulled the strings in an impressive display, while the much-maligned Antony had a goal and an assist.

The 23-year-old winger arrived from Ten Hag’s old side Ajax for £81m in August, the fourth most expensive transfer in Premier League history. After a bright start saw him score in all three of his first league games, he failed to score a single goal since October – a woeful 15-game goalless drought that saw him take 38 shots without finding the net.

He has now picked up eight goals and two assists in 35 appearances, but improving his end product remains crucial.

“We said we wanted more goals and assists out of Antony and he produced,” former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live after the game.

“I think he was the difference between the two teams.”

Ten Hag said: “Antony knows and I know that when you are a striker, you need an end product.

“But already he has a lot of end product — he has scored in all the competitions now.

“Eight or nine goals in his first year at United is not bad and he still has games to go.”

The big concern for United is their injury toll, with four injury-forced changes for the match. Besides Martinez and Varane, Tyrell Malacia was ruled out while Marcel Sabitzer was injured in the warm-up. Goalkeeper David de Gea seemed to be struggling with a limp in the first half, with reserve Jack Butland warming up and ready to replace him.

Nevertheless, the promising return of Eriksen was a huge boost, while Antony finding form could make a serious difference to their top-four hopes.

ON FIRE VILLA GET LAST LAUGH OVER MAGPIES STAR

Although Aston Villa came into their clash against Newcastle United on the back of red hot form – namely six wins from their last seven – eagle-eyed observers will have pointed out the difficulty of their opponents.

The victories all came against teams in the bottom half of the league with the notable exception of Chelsea; a loss that ultimately spelled the end for Graham Potter’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.

With a game against Newcastle, a team who were on a five-game winning streak themselves, it would be the ultimate test to see just how far Unai Emery’s Villa Park revolution had come.

What transpired over the following 90 minutes left Toon fans scratching their heads in disbelief as the Villa Park faithful were in dreamland.

Ollie Watkins hit the post inside the opening 40 seconds, a warning sign Newcastle never heeded. Watkins laid on the assist for Jacob Ramsey’s opener in the 11th minute and ran the Toon backline ragged.

Even Newcastle legend Alan Shearer could scarcely believe how limp his former employers were.

“Should be 3-0 down,” Shearer wrote on Twitter. “Newcastle can’t get near Villa at the minute. Terrible start for the Toon.”

Despite the first-half dominance, Emery’s side led only through Ramsey’s goal and there was a hint of fear among Villa fans Newcastle could make the hosts pay for failing to capitalise on the plethora of opportunities they had.

Those fears quickly subsided as Villa kept their foot on the gas pedal as Watkins got the goals his performance deserved in the 64th and 83rd minute, making it 11 goals in his last 12 games.

Once the full-time whistle blew, Shearer was left in disbelief at what he’d seen.

“Well done Villa. Brilliant today,” Shearer wrote. “Not many teams have done this to Newcastle. They have battered them from start to finish and been better in every position.”

Speaking before the game, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson laughed at his opponents on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, joking: “Aston Villa are on fire? Let them know the fire brigade are in town … it looks like we will have to put the fire out.”

After the match, Villa captain John McGinn hit back, saying: “Actually, I didn’t notice that but like a lot of emergency services at the minute, the fire brigade must have been on strike …”

The 3-0 win was as emphatic an answer Emery could have dished up to the critics as Villa moved to within six points of the Champions League places.

Spurs, who conceded a last-gasp goal in losing 3-2 to Bournemouth, and fourth-placed Newcastle, hammered 3-0 by Aston Villa, will now be looking nervously over their shoulders.

Champions League qualification may seem a far-fetched dream, but with five wins on the trot and Watkins in unstoppable form, perhaps it’s closer to reality than some may care to admit.

    LAMPARD’S BIG PROBLEM

Chelsea slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, their third defeat in seven days under new interim manager Frank Lampard.

It leaves them winless in six games (all competitions) and down in 11th, with their slim hopes of qualifying for the European places fading by the minute.

Lampard became the club’s third manager of the season when he replaced Graham Potter – but is clearly struggling for answers to the crucial problem that laid his predecessor low.

In his three games in a week, Lampard has fielded 19 starters and used a different formation each time.

He started with a 4-3-3 against Wolves, swapped to a 3-5-2 against Real Madrid in a midweek Champions League clash, then went for a 4-2-3-1 against the Seagulls.

But changes in personnel and formation had little impact against Brighton, who took 26 shots to Chelsea’s eight in a dominant performance despite the Blues taking an early lead.

So desperate has Lampard seemed to find a successful combination of players and formation that he delivered a rare quadruple substitution against Brighton.

On came Reece James, Mateo Kovacic, Joao Felix and Hakim Ziyech for Wesley Fofana, Enzo Fernandez, Christian Pulisic and Raheem Sterling.

Then, after going down 2-1, Lampard made ANOTHER tactical switch, moving to 4-4-2.

If he can’t find an effective formation and starting XI soon, the Blues could endure a torrid finish to the year.

    HODGSON DELIVERS IN STYLE

The decision to bring former manager Roy Hodgson back to Crystal Palace last month looks inspired.

The team have scored nine goals in three Premier League matches since the ex-England boss returned to Selhurst Park — as many as they had netted in their previous 16 league games between November 2022 and March 2023.

Chairman Steve Parish spoke of the “immediate requirement of keeping us in the league”, when he appointed the 75-year-old to replace the sacked Patrick Vieira.

Three games and three wins later, Palace are nine points clear of the relegation zone and are close to safety.

Eberechi Eze, who scored both goals in Saturday’s 2-0 win against bottom side Southampton, said Hodgson had taken the shackles off.

“We’re playing with a lot more freedom, more energy, and we’re so much more positive, which is a huge credit to the gaffer coming in and helping us with that,” he said.
