IPL 2025 Auction: Here’s how the new uncapped player rule benefit CSK in retaining MS Dhoni

In a significant announcement ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 player mega auction, the tournament governing council has confirmed that franchises can retain up to six players. This retention can be done through either direct retention or by utilizing the Right to Match (RTM) option.

The player regulations also introduce a new rule that classifies a capped Indian player who has not been part of the playing XI in international cricket for the last five years as uncapped. This means that teams can now retain such players as uncapped, potentially saving significant amounts of money.

    IPL Retention and RTM Rules

A team is permitted to retain six players from its current squad, combining direct retention and RTM. The maximum number of capped players that can be retained is five, which can include both Indian and overseas players. Additionally, teams can retain up to two uncapped players. There are no restrictions on the number of overseas players that can be retained.

The number of RTM cards available to a team will depend on how many players they retain before the auction.

    MS Dhoni’s potential retention

One of the most intriguing aspects of the new retention rules is the possibility of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retaining former India captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. Given that Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, he meets the criteria for being considered uncapped under the new regulations.

If CSK decides to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player, they will be required to pay him four crore rupees, significantly less than the 12 crore he was obliged to be paid ahead of the 2022 auctions.

Dhoni’s future in the IPL has been a subject of speculation for the past few seasons. After undergoing knee surgery in 2023, he handed over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad and played a limited role with the bat in IPL 2024. Recently, Dhoni hinted that his decision on whether to continue playing in the IPL would depend on the finalization of the player retention rules.

  • IPL 2025: MS Dhoni’s CSK retention all but confirmed, Impact Player rule to stay

IPL 2025: MS Dhoni’s CSK retention all but confirmed, Impact Player rule to stay

The legendary India National Cricket Team and Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni is highly likely to be seen in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has brought back an old rule, which will help CSK retain the legendary skipper for a less amount.

MS Dhoni is one of the greatest players ever in the history of the Indian Premier League. He was roped in by Chennai Super Kings in 2008 and has done a remarkable job for the team.

MS Dhoni Likely To Be Retained As Uncapped Player Rule Brought Back

CSK’s Thala has led the franchise to 10 IPL finals in the first 14 seasons and won 5 championships in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. With the bat, his contributions have been magnificent as he has scored 5243 runs in 264 matches at an average of 39.12 and a strike rate of 137.53.

MS Dhoni stepped down as skipper of Chennai Super Kings and handed over the leadership to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of Indian Premier League 2024, who did a good job as captain but failed to lead the teams to playoffs, losing a crucial match against RCB in the league stage.

Meanwhile, MS Dhoni has the opportunity to play one more season in IPL as the Chennai Super Kings have been allowed to retain him as an uncapped player, as per ESPNcricinfo.

According to the report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to bring back, which allows the franchises to retain the players who have retired from international cricket for at least years as uncapped players.

This rule was in place since the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) but was scrapped in 2021 as no team used it. After a discussion with the franchises, the decision was made by the governing body to revive this rule. Notably, earlier a few reports had claimed that some franchise owners including SRH owner Kavya Maran were against the idea of this being reintroduced.

Notably, MS Dhoni was the second retention of the franchise ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 mega auction. He was retained after Ravindra Jadeja for INR 12 Crore. However, with the uncapped player rule coming back for retired players, CSK will have to pay Dhoni only INR 4 crore, if they retain him.

Impact Player Rule Set To Stay In IPL 2024

In another development as per ESPNcricinfo, the Impact Player rule has been given a green light and it will continue to stay in the Indian Premier League 2025.

The Impact Player rule that was introduced in 2023 to make the league more competitive has been a hot topic of discussion among fans and experts.

Many have opined that the rule reduces the role of all-rounders and hurts their development while others claim that it has made the matches more thrilling and competitive.

At the meeting between the BCCI officials and the IPL franchise owners, most of the people were in favor of this rule to continue. Notably, the impact player rule has had a significant impact on the scores in the Indian Premier League as nine of the ten highest totals in IPL history have been recorded since its introduction.

  • IPL 2025: Aakash Chopra questions RCB vs CSK rivalry, drops bombshell on Virat Kohli becoming captain

IPL 2025: Aakash Chopra questions RCB vs CSK rivalry, drops bombshell on Virat Kohli becoming captain

The rivalry between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) took an unexpected turn and became the talking point, especially after their last outing in the IPL 2024. The CSK vs RCB match was high-stakes, and emotions were running high among the Bengaluru players on May 18, 2024.

From fiery celebrations of wickets by the RCB players to MS Dhoni’s alleged denial to shake hands with the Bengaluru players, it was a great treat for the fans to watch out in the IPL 2024, which was won by Faf du Plessis and his team by 27 runs to qualify for the playoffs at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

RCB vs CSK rivalry heats up after stunning IPL 2024 showdown

Recently, former Indian batter Aakash Chopra shared his views on the rivalry between CSK and RCB in the IPL with a scorching statement, which would certainly not go down well with the Kohli and Bengaluru fans. The cricket pundit said that CSK has consistently dominated RCB over the years, making him wonder if this can truly be called a rivalry at all.

However, the IPL 2024 encounter between the two sides may have sparked new hope for RCB fans, as the franchise pulled off one of the most unexpected turnarounds in IPL history, leaving cricket fans stunned. It seemed like CSK had the upper hand, and at one point, the match looked all but sealed for the yellow brigade.

But RCB flipped the script in dramatic fashion, delivering a crushing blow to CSK and shaking up the IPL landscape. It was a statement win for a team that has long been in the shadows of its southern rival. This victory may not be enough to call the rivalry evenly matched, but it certainly adds fuel to the fire, according to the well-known commentator.

A rivalry truly develops when the results are close or evenly matched: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra said on 2 Sloggers’ podcast on YouTube: “A rivalry truly develops when the results are close or evenly matched. Unfortunately, the truth so far has been that the matches between CSK and RCB have been very one-sided. This time, of course, CSK lost a major game, and RCB delivered one of the biggest turnarounds of the IPL history.

The ball was turning far more than expected, and at one point, it seemed like the match was slipping away. But then what happened was brilliant—RCB delivered a huge blow to CSK. So yes, there is a rivalry; there’s a niddle, but for this rivalry to become real, RCB needs to win a lot more matches against CSK.”

The big question now revolves around Bengaluru’s leadership as they prepare for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Virat Kohli had stepped down from the role in 2021, but many fans would love to see the former Indian captain return as captain. However, Chopra said that it seems highly unlikely, as he’s firmly set on his decision to focus solely on his batting.

Will Virat Kohli return or is a new captain on the horizon for RCB

He said that RCB may have no choice but to look for a new leader to guide the team forward if they remove the current skipper, Faf du Plessis. With the IPL 2025 mega auction on the horizon, RCB management will have to make some tough decisions. Should they invest in Faf for the next few years or look for a fresh face, possibly even from outside India, to take over the captaincy reins?

Chopra signed off by saying, “As for whether Virat Kohli will become RCB captain again, I have some doubts. As he’s made up his mind, it is highly unlikely that he will don the captain’s hat again. RCB might have to find a new captain. Faf du Plessis might not be available for the upcoming season.

The question is whether the team will invest in Faf for the next three years. He’s a good captain and great option, but with the mega auction coming up, they may have to look for someone outside India if they want to make changes in leadership.”

  • Chennai Super Kings: 3 key players CSK can release ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Chennai Super Kings: 3 key players CSK can release ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have solidified their status as one of the most esteemed franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with a remarkable five titles to their name. Despite facing criticism for often acquiring players over the certain age, CSK have consistently delivered strong performances on the field. However, the franchise’s approach has been under scrutiny, especially with their latest campaign.

Chennai Super Kings: Leadership transition and impact

The 2024 season marked a significant transition for CSK as MS Dhoni, the iconic captain, stepped down from his leadership role. With Dhoni handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad just before the season opener, the franchise experienced a period of adjustment. Gaikwad’s performance as captain received mixed reviews, with some decisions coming under scrutiny. Nevertheless, he demonstrated solid batting form throughout the season.

Despite this change, CSK managed to maintain a semblance of unity and cohesion throughout the season. Dhoni’s departure did not immediately disrupt the team’s dynamics, though they ultimately failed to secure a playoff berth. His enduring presence remains influential, but his future participation in the IPL is uncertain, potentially pending decisions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding player retention rules and the potential reintroduction of ‘Right To Match’ (RTM) cards.

Indian Premier League: 2024 season performance and challenges

In IPL 2024, CSK’s campaign concluded with a disappointing exit from the playoffs, following a narrow defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This outcome, combined with a slightly inferior Net Run Rate (NRR), meant they finished outside the top four. This was the third time in 15 seasons that CSK did not advance to the playoffs. The team faced several challenges, including key player injuries and the loss of Devon Conway before the season began. Despite retaining core players and making strategic additions at the auction, injuries to bowlers like Matheesha Pathirana further impacted their performance.

3 crucial players CSK might consider releasing before the IPL 2025 mega auction:

    1. Premier bowler’s struggles and injuries

Deepak Chahar, premier fast bowler, renowned for his ability to swing the new ball and make early breakthroughs, had a season to forget in IPL 2024. Over eight matches, he managed only five wickets at an average of 40. His trademark pace and swing were frequently undermined by persistent injury issues, which kept him out of several games and hindered his performance. This inconsistency, combined with the need for a reliable and impactful pace attack, may lead CSK to reconsider his future with the franchise. The team’s focus will likely shift towards securing bowlers who can deliver consistently throughout the tournament.

    2. Veteran Batter’s form decline

Ajinkya Rahane, the veteran batter, who dazzled in IPL 2023 with a remarkable strike rate of 172.48, faced a notable decline in performance during the 2024 season. In 12 innings, he accumulated 242 runs at a strike rate of 123.46, a significant drop from his previous explosive form. At 36 years old, and with a batting approach that often requires time to get going, his inability to replicate last season’s success could prompt CSK to seek younger, more dynamic players. The franchise’s strategic shift towards future talent might lead them to release him and explore options that offer both immediate impact and long-term potential.

    3. All-rounder’s limited contribution

Moeen Ali, the all-rounder, who was expected to be a pivotal player with both bat and ball, fell short of expectations in IPL 2024. His appearances were limited to just eight matches, where he scored 128 runs and took only two wickets at an economy rate of 8.87. His recent announcement of retirement from international cricket for England further complicates his standing with CSK. Given his subdued impact this season and the added factor of his retirement, the franchise may opt to release him in favour of acquiring players who can provide consistent all-round performance and contribute to the team’s growth and success in the upcoming seasons.

  • Tushar Deshpande reveals facing MS Dhoni’s wrath for bowling bouncer to him in nets

Tushar Deshpande reveals facing MS Dhoni’s wrath for bowling bouncer to him in nets

Tushar Deshpande, India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pace bowler, shared an inspiring moment with MS Dhoni that had a profound impact on his career. Deshpande recalled a crucial conversation he had with the legendary cricketer during CSK’s preparatory camp for the 2023 season.

MS Dhoni, who is well-known for his exceptional mentorship and leadership, has been a guiding light for young cricketers over the years and will remain at CSK. Notably, the former Indian skipper stepped down as CSK captain before the start of the IPL 2024 earlier this year.

Tushar Deshpande recalls how MS Dhoni’s support boosted his confidence

Deshpande revealed that MS Dhoni, known for nurturing young talents, expressed his confidence in his potential to succeed on the international stage during their discussion.

The legendary wicketkeeper emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and focus, advising Tushar Deshpande to remain unperturbed by the crowd and to concentrate solely on his bowling.

MS Dhoni’s words were not just encouragement for Tushar Deshpande, who has experienced both highs and lows in his career and found the former CSK skipper’s mentorship valuable.

The reassurance from a cricketing legend like MS Dhoni, who has mentored numerous players and helped them elevate their game, was a significant boost to Deshpande’s confidence. Recalling his former captain’s words, the pacer said that it was an achievement for him to be praised and predicted to have a great career.

‘You have everything to succeed’: Dhoni’s message to Deshpande

Tushar Deshpande was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo: “[Dhoni told me]: ‘You have everything to succeed at international level. But you have to be calm during your run-up. Don’t get distracted by the crowd. Just take a deep breath, stay calm, and bowl.’ If Mahi tells you that you have everything to be successful at the international level, boss, that itself is an achievement.”

He had a rough start to the IPL 2023 season with a disappointing performance against the Gujarat Titans, where he took 1 wicket for 51 runs in 3.2 overs. Despite his poor spell, the former CSK skipper supported Teshar, encouraging him to continue with his bowling approach in the next match as well.

Tushar Deshpande further noted, “Mahi came to me and said, ‘You haven’t made any mistakes. You bowled all good balls. It was not your day today. In the next match, repeat the same.”

Tushar Deshpande recalls how MS Dhoni helped him to regain form

The pacer further revealed that Dhoni dedicated his time to work with him during net sessions. Furthermore, Deshpande recalled a particular practice session where he faced Dhoni in a match simulation. During this session, Dhoni hit a six off Deshpande’s delivery and then playfully reprimanded him for not bowling a yorker.

Deshpande shared, “I was bowling good yorkers, but suddenly I bowled a bouncer and got hit for a 100-meter six. He asked me, ‘Kyun daala bouncer?’ [Why did you bowl the bouncer?] I told him I thought he was expecting the yorker. He told me: Don’t play cricket in the mind. Yorker is a yorker, and no one can hit you.”

The CSK pacer signed off by saying on Dhoni’s simple advice for him: “He was telling me we keep trying to play ahead of the game instead of staying in the present. The other thing he told me is to focus on my fitness, which is important for fast bowlers.”

  • Top 5 lowest scores in the history of IPL finals

Top 5 lowest scores in the history of IPL finals

The Indian Premier League (IPL) finals are often anticipated with great excitement and high expectations for nail-biting, closely contested matches. Fans and analysts alike look forward to the culmination of the tournament, hoping for a thrilling encounter that keeps them on the edge of their seats until the last ball.

The drama of a close chase, the tension of a last-over finish, and the spectacle of star players performing under pressure make the IPL finals a blockbuster event. Historic matches, such as the IPL 2019 final between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), decided by just 1 run, set the bar high for thrilling finales. These moments contribute to the IPL’s reputation as one of the most entertaining cricket leagues in the world, where every final is expected to be a grand spectacle of sportsmanship and skill.

    One-sided matches and pressure crumbles

However, the reality of IPL finals sometimes diverges from these high expectations, resulting in one-sided matches where one team crumbles under the immense pressure of the summit clash. There have been numerous instances in the 17-year history of the IPL where teams have succumbed to the high stakes, leading to lopsided outcomes.

For example, in the IPL 2013 final, CSK struggled to chase down a modest total set by MI, ultimately falling short by 23 runs. Similarly, in the IPL 2024 final, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were bowled out for just 113 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), making it an easy win for KKR. These instances highlight that the pressure of the final can often lead to underwhelming performances, where the nerves and expectations get the better of players and teams, resulting in matches that fail to deliver the anticipated thrill and competitiveness.

Despite a fighting 63* from MS Dhoni, CSK managed only 125/9 in their 20 overs, resulting in a 23-run victory for MI. MI’s bowlers, especially Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga, played crucial roles in restricting CSK.
