PL giant disgraced in mega A-League drubbing… and it should’ve been more

The A-League Men’s All-Stars have sent Newcastle United back home with their tails between their legs after embarrassing the English Premier League club 8-0 at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.

Newcastle coach Eddie Howe expressed his lack of enthusiasm during the week about making the long trip down to Australia so soon after the end of the EPL season.

And, just five days after playing their final Premier League game, his Magpies played like a team that couldn’t wait to head back home.

Newcastle fielded a much more inexperienced team than the one that beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties at the MCG on Wednesday night. Excluding fourth-choice goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, the average age of their starting line-up was 19.5.

The Magpies were missing multiple mainstays from their side such as Alexander Isak, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Miguel Almiron, Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, Anthony Gordon, Martin Dubravka and Dan Burn.

The All-Stars took full advantage and wrapped up the contest in little over half an hour after needing less than five minutes to open the scoring when Wellington star Ben Old rammed it home from 12 yards out at the back post.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Dylan Charlton failed to negotiate Western United veteran Ben Garrucio’s cross from the left and after the 17-year-old Newcastle defender looped it towards his own goal, the ever-alert Nicolas Milanovic pounced and toe-poked it past Gillespie.

Nine minutes later, A-League golden boot winner Adam Taggart made it 3-0 with a magnificent effort from the edge of the box as he turned on a dime and let loose with a peach of a hit that went in off the left upright.

Things fell apart dramatically for the visitors in the second half and in the 62nd minute, Newcastle Jets star Apostolos Stamatelopoulos put the All-Stars four goals to the good against his namesake club when, from 20 yards out, he whipped it magnificently past Gillespie diving at full stretch.

Stamatelopoulos completed his brace 12 minutes later when he made it 5-0 with a tap-in from the goal line after being fed by a beautiful pass from Nestory Irankunda who went on a blistering run down the right in what was a parting gift for the Australian public from the precocious teenager before he heads to Germany to link up with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The All-Stars scored again in the 82nd minute when Irankunda and Bozhidar Kraev combined to get it to Jake Hollman who tapped it home from a few yards out into an unguarded net under absolutely no pressure.

Jordan Courtney-Perkins made it 7-0 eight minutes later when he popped it home from close range at the back post after mopping up Stamatelopoulos’ header from Tolgay Arslan’s corner and in the first minute of stoppage time an unmarked Kraev completed the rout when he elegantly chipped it over Newcastle goalkeeper Aidan Harris.

The All-Stars’ winning margin could have been even greater. In the 17th minute, Gillespie kicked it straight to Milanovic who gleefully sprinted to 16 yards out and unleashed a strike which had the Newcastle custodian beaten, but incredibly Milanovic watched on in disbelief as it pinballed off both posts and back out again.

Under their feisty coach Patrick Kisnorbo, the All-Stars treated the match as anything but a friendly and went full throttle from the first whistle.

In many respects it was a case of boys against men as the hosts’ high-intensity press put the young Newcastle team under huge pressure, forcing multiple skill errors, and the more seasoned and experienced All-Stars made sure they capitalised.

The hosts dominated the first half and blitzed Newcastle for shots on goal (12-2) and shots on target (6-1), before ultimately winning both stats convincingly 23-5 and 13-1 respectively.

After coming on in the 71st minute for his first ever Newcastle bow against Tottenham, Aussie teenager Garang Kuol made his maiden start for the Magpies.

Kuol produced Newcastle’s only decent chance of the match in the 25th minute when he fired from 17 yards out but it went straight into the chest of All-Stars goalkeeper Alex Paulsen.

Things came full circle for Kuol who landed at Newcastle, thanks largely to his sensational performance for the All-Stars against Barcelona two years ago which grabbed the attention of global scouts.

Behind-the-scenes footage of Newcastle man Burn’s famous dance has rival fans ‘cringing’

Newcastle star Dan Burn can be spotted pulling out his now-famous dance during media duties – and it has split opinion.

The Geordie defender went viral last season when he scored in a 2-0 win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

It was Burn’s first goal for Newcastle, the club he supported as a lad growing up in Blyth, and Sky Sports cameras managed to find their way into the dressing room afterwards.

That was the moment that Eddie Howe called Burn up after his goal and the 6ft 6in star got up and pulled out a bizarre yet now iconic dance move.

And ahead of the new season, it appears that the 31-year-old was at it again as he cracked it out yet again in front of a green screen.

So, be prepared to see it on your screens in the not-so-distance future – especially if the ex-Brighton star is on the scoresheet.

While Newcastle fans adore the centre-back, not everyone has been left convinced over his dance moves.

One fan replied: “Cringe every time I see him do it.”

Another wrote: “Newcastle become the cringiest club in the league, fans were bad enough now the players at it.”

And this fan said: “Club gets worse and worse.”

While Newcastle might have divided some sections of fans, they themselves could not be closer together currently.

After years of misery under the Mike Ashley regime, Geordie supporters are in dreamland under Howe.

That has been reciprocated by the players, including Burn, who is delighted to be a part of things after taking the risk to leave a Brighton side on the rise for his boyhood club.

Burn told talkSPORT: “It’s just a bit surreal. When I came I said that in my heart I was desperate to come.

“Brighton were flying high in the league and there was a strong chance that if I went to Newcastle I might never play Premier League football again.

“So to be sitting here 18 months later, finishing fourth and getting Champions League football next season and playing regularly at the moment, I probably couldn’t ask for any more.”

Burn joined the Magpies in January 2022 and played every game in the Premier League last season as they finished fourth in the table.

And they are back in the Champions League ahead of next season for the first time in 20 years.

There are high hopes that they can even go on to win a piece of silverware, something the Magpies fell at the last hurdle at last season.

While many footballers live a life of luxury and show off their flashy cars, Burn instead opts to drive a Smart car around town – despite being one of the Premier League’s tallest players at 6ft 7in.

And 16-time WWE world champion Cena has commended the former Seagulls defender for doing so.

Cena is currently promoting his latest film Fast X – the tenth instalment of the Fast and Furious franchise.

In a video shared by the Magpies’ official Twitter account, the 46-year-old applauded Burn in what is one of the most bizarre crossovers in 2023.

The Champ said of the ex-Fulham man: “Nice, so I like this. Dan Burn owns a smart car. And he’s six foot seven. People are like ‘no way’.

“This is a conscious effort to make a statement and that’s why cars are like art. They are expressions of who we are.

“This guy knows his self-worth. He looks in the mirror every day and says, ‘I’m enough’. And a fancy car doesn’t define me.

“Dan Burn – nice flex. Sick burn.”

This fan commented: “This might be the best thing I’ve ever seen.”

Meanwhile another stated: “What the hell is going on?”

Despite Cena clearly a fan of Burn, the Newcastle faithful shouldn’t be expecting to see him at St James’ Park anytime soon, with the WWE icon known to be a fan of Tottenham.

Dan Burn powered home a header against former club Brighton with Newcastle looking like they’re going one step closer to Champions League football.

Eddie Howe’s side went into the clash with the Seagulls knowing that a victory would put them four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool with just two games remaining.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side also came into the game with an outside hope of a top four finish, however that appears to be up in smoke after a bright start from the Magpies.

Newcastle took the lead when Deniz Undav scored an own goal following a Kieran Trippier set piece midway through the first half.

It was then Burn’s chance to make himself a hero as he too headed home from a Trippier free-kick to make it 2-0 to the Tynesiders before the half-time break.

A hugely popular figure at St James’ Park, Burn enjoyed his header even more as it came against his former employers Brighton, the club who allowed him to leave in January 2022.

He’s also the first former Brighton player to score against them in the Premier League.

But while Newcastle were delighted to hold a 2-0 lead at the break, they were put to task early in the second half when Undav made up for his earlier own goal with a low effort for Brighton, teeing up a tense second half for both sides.
