Late drama in title rivals’ thriller; VAR ‘injustice’ erupts as Man U woes deepen: PL Wrap

Mohamed Salah rescued Liverpool as the Egypt star’s late equaliser earned a pulsating 2-2 draw against title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s side were on the brink of only their second defeat this season until Salah netted with nine minutes left at the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool had fallen behind to Bukayo Saka’s early opener and, although Virgil van Dijk equalised, Mikel Merino put Arsenal back in front before half-time.

Salah’s eighth goal in 13 games in all competitions this season was aided by Arsenal’s latest rash of injuries, with defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber both forced off in the second half.

Manchester City were the real winners on Sunday as the draw in north London ensured they finished the weekend on top of the Premier League.

Unbeaten City, who beat Southampton 1-0 on Saturday, are one point ahead of second-placed Liverpool, with third-placed Arsenal sitting five points adrift of top spot.

It was only the second time Liverpool had failed to win since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in the close-season, starting his Anfield reign with 12 victories from 13 games in all competitions.

Even so, Liverpool will be happier with the point after showing impressive resolve to twice come from behind against a fellow title contender.

Arsenal were left to lick their wounds after the defensive injuries that left them fatally exposed.

They were already without Riccardo Calafiori, sidelined by an injury suffered against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek, while William Saliba served a suspension following his dismissal in last weekend’s loss at Bournemouth.

Mikel Arteta’s side have now gone two league games without a win, leaving them with only three victories in their last seven top-flight matches in a major setback to their hopes of a first title since 2004.

    – Saka’s perfect start –

Saka, back from two games out with injury, had given Arsenal the perfect start in the ninth minute.

Ben White’s sublime long pass sent Saka surging down the right flank before he deftly cut back into the Liverpool area, leaving Andrew Robertson trailing in his wake as he lashed a fierce close-range strike into the roof of the net.

Merino nearly gifted Liverpool an immediate equaliser when he carelessly let the ball run to Salah, who rifled his shot just wide from the edge of the area.

So often over the last two seasons, Arsenal have been dead ball masters thanks to their set-piece coach Nicolas Jover, but for once they were exposed as Liverpool drew level in the 18th minute.

Luis Diaz beat Kai Havertz to flick on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner and Van Dijk got in front of Thomas Partey as the Dutch defender stooped to head home from close-range.

But Arsenal’s prowess from set-pieces enabled them to regain the lead in the 43rd minute.

Declan Rice’s teasing free-kick arrowed into the Liverpool area and Merino was perfectly placed to thump his header past Caoimhin Kelleher from six yards.

A lengthy VAR check followed to confirm Merino was just onside as the Spain midfielder celebrated his first goal since his close-season arrival from Real Sociedad.

Arsenal keeper David Raya plunged to his right to keep out Alexis Mac Allister’s header on the final seconds of a thrilling first half.

Arteta’s already makeshift defence suffered another blow when Gabriel limped off with a knee injury after a challenge from Darwin Nunez early in the second half.

Without their first choice centre-back, Arsenal adopted a more cautious approach and Raya was booked for time-wasting with over 20 minutes to play.

But the Gunners lost Timber to an injury in the closing stages as their defensive issues reached crisis point and handed Liverpool a lifeline.

With just nine minutes left, Arsenal’s under-manned rearguard was ruthlessly exposed as Alexander-Arnold’s lofted pass sent Nunez clear of teenage substitute Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Nunez slipped in the unmarked Salah and he slotted home as Arsenal slumped to the turf in frustration.

VAR FURY AS MAN U PLUMMET TO NEW LOWS

Manchester United’s under-fire manager Erik ten Hag said he could only fault his side’s finishing after a damaging 2-1 defeat for the Dutchman at struggling West Ham on Sunday.

United slipped to 14th in the Premier League table after Jarrod Bowen’s controversial stoppage time penalty winner handed the Hammers all three points.

Crysencio Summerville put West Ham in front against the run of play 16 minutes from time before Casemiro equalised.

Ten Hag was furious at the award of the spot-kick after VAR intervened when Matthijs de Ligt clashed with Danny Ings inside the box.

United captain Bruno Fernandes had a red card rescinded after being sent-off in a 3-0 defeat by Tottenham last month and Ten Hag highlighted the inconsistency of when VAR decides to challenge the referee’s on-field decision.

“Before the season they explained the process of VAR – only when (it is) clear and obvious they should interfere,” said Ten Hag.

Victory stun City in Melbourne derby | 01:07

“What they didn’t do against Spurs, that was a wrong decision. Now they make a wrong decision interfering and both have big impact on the games. I don’t criticise the personnel, I criticise the process.” However, it was a familiar lack of wastefulness in front of goal that cost United a much-needed victory.

Diogo Dalot missed an open goal, while Alejandro Garnacho and Fernandes were also guilty of missing huge chances in a dominant first-half display.

“We created so many chances, played so good football, especially in the first half. How I want my team to play in and out of possession,” added Ten Hag.

“Six or seven 100 per cent chances we should have scored. That is a point of improvement. But overall I had not so many criticisms of my team, apart from not scoring.” United’s return of eight goals from their first nine games is their worst in the Premier League era.

Ten Hag’s men have won just three of those matches and drawn all three of their opening games in the Europa League to leave their manager clinging on to his job.

But he claimed to have seen positive signs in a 2-1 win over Brentford last weekend and a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce prior to their visit to the London Stadium.

“At this moment the luck is definitely not on our side. Last season was not different and near the end we turned it around,” said Ten Hag.

“We are so determined it will be the same (this season). We have to turn this around and it will turn around if we keep playing like we are now.

“Brentford, Fenerbahce, today, we played really good football.”

Ten Hag doubled down on his feelings of being hard down by at the moment when speaking to the BBC’s Match of the Day.

The Dutchman is firmly pointing the finger at the referees for contributing to their lowly start to the season.

“Three times this season we feel injustice,” he said.

“We have to score, we created so many chances. We should’ve been two or three up. Second half we were forcing it but we allowed them into the game. When you are losing 1-0 you need big personality and character of the team and showed resilience to get back into it. Unfair and unjust the way we conceded the penalty.

“I spoke with them (the referees). But the decision is made. There’s no way back and that’s football. That’s a third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and on our scores and where we are in the table. It’s not right.”

The under-fire manager boss is feeling little sympathy from fans and the English press pack, however.

Many believe it is a matter of when, not if, he will be given his marching orders and the UK Telegraph columnist Jim White believes the loss to West Ham is the sort of game that could be Ten Hag’s curtain call.

“When the obituary of Erik ten Hag’s time in charge at Manchester United is written, this match might well serve as exhibit A,” White wrote.

“Quite how his team managed to lose here for the third time is indicative of his time in charge – if never quite in control – at Old Trafford. “For the first half United looked smart, together, organised. They passed quickly and imaginatively, Bruno Fernandes at his quick-witted best. And they carved out chances. Loads of them. The trouble was, they wasted the lot.

“Diogo Dalot was the most culpable, blasting over an empty net after dinking the ball over Lukasz Fabianski’s head. So bad was United’s finishing, it was only the manner of their misses that silenced the growing insurrection in the London Stadium stands: it is hard to be too revolutionary when you are smirking at others’ incompetence in front of goal.

“And woeful as West Ham had been for 45 minutes, there was time for Julen Lopetegui to make adjustments. He duly did. Tightening, sharpening, probably reading the riot act, he managed to make West Ham look competitive again. So, the inevitable happened.”

Ange‘s Spurs take crucial step towards CL return after thrashing top four rivals in ‘do-or-die’ clash

Tottenham landed a crucial blow in the fight to finish in the Premier League’s top four with a 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa on Monday (AEDT).

Ange Postecoglou’s side arrived at Villa Park knowing defeat to their fourth placed rivals would have been potentially fatal to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

But the north Londoners rose to the challenge with a second half goal spree in the rain-soaked west midlands.

James Maddison put Tottenham ahead and Brennan Johnson doubled their lead before Villa captain John McGinn was sent off for chopping down Destiny Udogie.

Son Heung-min and Timo Werner struck in stoppage-time to leave fifth placed Tottenham just two points behind Villa with a game in hand.

“We made it tough for Villa. They worked hard just to contain us. We got our rewards in the second half,” Postecoglou said.

“Everyone was billing this as a do-or-die for us. I assume we’re not dead yet. It means we’re one game closer, just 11 games to go.” Restoring Tottenham to Europe’s elite club competition in his first season in charge would be a significant achievement for Postecoglou and the target is now firmly in his control.

The Australian this week said reaching the Champions League would not be “a Willy Wonka golden ticket” for his club.

But the defeat left Villa feeling as sick as Augustus Gloop, the gluttonous boy who gets in trouble while visiting Wonka’s chocolate factory in Roald Dahl’s book.

‘100 per cent a foul’: Klopp, PL great stunned over shock VAR call as thrilling title race tightens

PL Wrap: Gunners go top despite keeper’s horror howler; Utd keep top four dream alive

Villa are hoping to reach the Champions League for the first time since 1983, but this was a major setback to their unexpected bid for a top four finish.

“We weren’t clinical because they were defending very well and we didn’t control the game,” Villa boss Unai Emery said.

“We have to control our emotions. The first two goals were crazy. We have to move on.” Emery’s team claimed an early penalty when Ollie Watkins was sent flying by Micky van de Ven’s crunching challenge, but VAR rejected their appeals.

In a game played at a frantic pace, Villa were left frustrated when Matty Cash poked into the side-netting from Leon Bailey’s cross.

Lucas Digne nearly broke the deadlock just before half-time with a glancing header that looped wide from McGinn’s cross.

Tottenham lost Van de Ven to an injury immediately after the interval, but the visitors were unfazed as they snatched the lead in the 50th minute.

Pape Sarr beat the Villa offside trap and whipped in a teasing cross that Maddison adroitly volleyed past Martinez from five yards before celebrating with his dart-throwing routine in front of the Tottenham fans.

Villa were shell-shocked and there was worse to come for Emery’s men three minutes later.

Ezri Konsa took too long on the ball before playing a weak pass that was intercepted by Kulusevski.

Son pounced on the loose ball, drove towards the Villa area and slipped his pass to Johnson, who fired high into the net before emulating Maddison’s darts tribute.

Johnson’s goal meant Tottenham had equalled their club record streak of scoring in 27 successive league games since the start of a season.

As a gloomy silence settled over Villa Park, McGinn’s frustration reached boiling point in the 65th minute.

Lunging into a reckless tackle on Udogie, the Villa captain was immediately shown a red card that he could have no complaints about.

With Villa in tatters, Son finished off Kulusevski’s cross with a first-time strike in stoppage-time.

Werner’s composed finish from Son’s pass in the final moments underscored Tottenham’s superiority.

At the London Stadium, Burnley blew a two-goal lead as Danny Ings’ last-gasp equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw for West Ham.

Vincent Kompany’s side climbed above Sheffield United to 19th place, but it was small consolation for squandering three points in their desperate fight for survival.

David Datro Fofana’s long-range strike and an own goal by Konstantinos Mavropanos put Burnley in control by half-time.

But Lucas Paqueta reduced the deficit immediately after the interval and former Burnley striker Ings levelled in the closing minutes.

Burnley are 10 points from safety with 10 games left.

Fourth bottom Nottingham Forest failed to pull away from relegation danger as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Brighton.

Andrew Omobamidele’s first-half own goal ended Brighton’s three-match winless league run to lift them to eighth place.

EPL 2024 transfer news: Jordan Henderson desperate for Premier League return as Saudi Arabia move turns sour

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is reportedly seeking a Premier League return just six months after joining the mass exodus of players to Saudi Arabia.

Henderson, who played 12 seasons for Liverpool, is playing under former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.

But things haven’t gone to plan, with Gerrard facing the sack after failing to win any of his last eight games over two months.

Henderson was heavily criticised for his move to Saudi Arabia given its conservative stance on the LGBT+ community who Henderson has publicly supported in the past.

Henderson reportedly earns £700,000 per week, but Saudi tax rules mean he won’t pay tax if he stays for at least two seasons.

But the 33-year-old has told teammates he is considering an exit after struggling to adapt to the playing conditions in his new country – and leaving early could see him slugged with a monster £7m tax bill.

The Saudi league is currently in a six-week break for the Asian Cup.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was asked about a potential move for the England international, replying: “We didn’t talk about names. At the moment, we are not talking about players.

“I saw Behdad [Eghbali], with Paul [Winstanley] and Laurence [Stewart]. I think we are going to have a chat tomorrow. We didn’t talk about names or players. For now, we are focusing on players like Andrey Santos.”

19-year-old midfielder Santos was recently recalled from an underwhelming loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

    ARSENAL MIGHT MAKE ZERO SIGNINGS

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says there is a ‘possibility’ his side will make no signings this month despite a raft of injuries.

Arteta has previously said he “needs players” in order to challenge for the title, with major off-season signing Jurrien Timber still out of fitness, Fabio Vieira and Thomas Partey also injured, and Takehiro Tomiyasu at the Asian Cup with Japan.

But Arteta told Sky Sports there was a chance of no signings this window, saying: “That’s a possibility.”

“Unfortunately, Jurrien has a very long-term injury. He’s doing really well but is still far from training with the team,” he added.

“It’s what we have, with Tomi having to leave. We’re open for the transfer market, but the emphasis is of making the most of the players we have.

“We’ll work with the club to understand if there are any possibilities, and whether we have any good options. But first of all, we will focus on the players we already have.”

‘Embryonic but promising’: Pundits rave over Ange’s debut but ‘clear vulnerabilities’ remain — UK View

Eye-catching attacking football, countless shots taken and the lion’s share of possession.

They are just three of many hallmarks that typify a team under the watchful eye of Ange Postecoglou.

But so too are a number of crippling defensive errors that can happen in Postecoglou’s high-octane style of play.

All of which was on display during Postecoglou’s first game as Tottenham boss, a 3-2 defeat in a friendly to fellow Premier League rivals West Ham United in Perth on Tuesday.

Giovani Lo Celso and Destiny Udogie were on the scoresheet for Spurs to help erase a 2-0 deficit, but Gianluca Scamacca’s second-half strike helped the Hammers to victory.

Postecoglou is aware the team is far from a finished product yet, conceding “there will be missteps along the way” but knows that is only natural at this stage of Tottenham’s evolution.

Although the Australian boss pleaded for patience, the verdict from several English pundits was largely positive, especially when it came to how they played going forward.

Yet questions remain regarding a major problem that plagued Tottenham throughout their 22/23 campaign.

Under former Tottenham managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, the team would play a frustratingly defensive style of play despite the attacking weapons at their disposal.

Granted, both managers had enjoyed success with that style at previous clubs.

But as modern football has evolved, so too has the way teams must play in order to be successful.

Yet Conte and Mourinho have struggled to truly adapt and in an era where fans want to be entertained as well as achieve success, it is no surprise their tenures at Tottenham unravelled in explosive fashion.

Thankfully, it’s taken 90 minutes to show just how different this team has become.

“One glance at this Tottenham team was enough to confirm a clean break from the risk-averse Antonio Conte era,” The Times’ James Gheerbrant wrote.

“Overall, this felt like an embryonic but promising attacking display, full of fluency, intricate passing and positional rotation.”

A major change from the Conte era was the formation switch.

Under the Italian, Spurs tended to line up in a 3-4-3 formation which relied heavily on the wing-backs to provide width going forward.

But Postecoglou opted for a 4-3-3, the formation he has used to great success at several stops throughout his managerial career.

James Maddison, Spurs’ marquee summer signing who often played as an attacking midfielder or winger at Leicester City, was deployed in the midfield three and showed glimpses of his immense talent.

He slipped in fellow summer recruit Manor Solomon for a chance but the Israeli winger failed to convert in 45 minutes of action.

Crucially, the key attacking metrics for Tottenham on the stats sheet already proved the players are quickly coming to grips with Postecoglou’s style.

They enjoyed 72 per cent of possession, out-passed West Ham with 574 passes to the Hammers’ 235 at a 91 per cent accuracy while peppering the West Ham goal with 30 shots on goal, with 12 on target.

The Times’ chief football writer Henry Winter was also glowing with praise for the attacking endeavour on display.

“Ignore the #THFC result and appreciate an encouraging performance,” Winter wrote on Twitter.

“It’s pre-season. You can see what Ange Postecoglou is trying to do, playing attacking, attractive football.

“Just needs work (a lot) on defence, especially at centre-back.”

Winter was not alone in his worries regarding Tottenham’s backline.

The first 45 minutes featured Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga, Cristian Romero and Pedro Porro across the back four while Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez and Emerson Royal took to the field for the second half.

Postecoglou’s side conceded their first goal when they struggled to clear their lines after a corner, allowing Jarrod Bowen an eternity to whip a cross in which Danny Ings happily converted.

It was Porro who struggled to close down Bowen’s cross while Reguilon failed to beat Ings to the ball and was also at fault alongside Tanganga for West Ham’s second.

Although Postecoglou shouldered the blame for the second goal, which was conceded off a corner, it highlighted the sheer size of the task when it comes to fixing Tottenham’s defensive woes.

The Daily Mail’s Matt Barlow wrote there were “clear vulnerabilities at the back” given the left and right backs were given licence to bomb forward and join in on the attack.

But, more importantly, it sent a timely reminder to Tottenham’s top brass regarding the need for defensive reinforcements.

Postecoglou was given plenty of food for thought by his Tottenham players against West Ham United. (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“Already clear to see that Tottenham need new defensive additions ahead of the opening game of the 2023/24 campaign, the two goals they conceded against West Ham has sent a message to Daniel Levy that he needs to get transfer deals over the line for new centre-backs ASAP,” Football.London’s Rob Guest wrote.

With friendlies to come against Leicester City and Lion City Sailors in Bangkok and Singapore respectively, Postecoglou will have further opportunities to further drill his style of play into his troops.

But from the first 90 minutes under the Australian boss, UK pundits have already been impressed by the attacking impetus from Tottenham.

It’s now a case of how they solidify the defence in time for the start of the Premier League season.

Arsenal fall apart in huge title blow; Forest manager blasts ‘terrible’ VAR call in Man Utd loss: EPL Wrap

Arsenal blew a two-goal lead for the second game in a row as Bukayo Saka’s penalty miss proved crucial in the Premier League leaders’ damaging 2-2 draw against West Ham.

Mikel Arteta’s side struck twice in the first 10 minutes at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard.

But just seven days after squandering a 2-0 advantage in their 2-2 draw at Liverpool, the Gunners again cracked under the pressure of the title race.

Said Benrahma’s penalty reduced the deficit for West Ham before the interval and after Saka fired his spot-kick wide early in the second half, Jarrod Bowen volleyed in an equaliser for the struggling hosts.

It was a hammer blow for Arsenal, who sit four points clear of second-placed Manchester City but have ceded the title race momentum to Pep Guardiola’s team.

“It started extremely well again. We scored two beautiful goals. After that we made a big mistake to not play with purpose to score the third and fourth,” Arteta said.

“We just thought we could play around them and keep the result. That gave them hope.” City had closed within three points of the Gunners after beating Leicester 3-1 and it is the champions who have the destiny of the title in their hands despite trailing Arsenal for much of the season.

City, who have won their last 10 matches in all competitions, have a game in hand on Arsenal.

With a home game against Arsenal looming on April 26, City know they will lift a fifth title in six seasons if they win their remaining eight matches.

By the time Arsenal travel to the Emirates Stadium they will be seven points clear of City if they beat bottom-of-the-table Southampton.

Yet that gap would still look uncomfortably small to Arsenal fans fearing their team are in the process of wasting a golden opportunity to win a first title since 2004.

While City are battle-tested in handling the tension of the title race, Arsenal’s young squad look to be suffering an ill-timed attack of nerves.

“My worry is after 2-0 we made that huge mistake,” Arteta said.

“We didn’t understand what the game required in that moment. We need that ruthless mindset to go and kill a team.”

Arsenal needed just seven minutes to take the lead as Odegaard’s deft pass found Ben White, who delivered a low cross that Jesus slotted home at the far post.

Jesus’s fourth goal in his last three games was followed by the Gunners’ second three minutes later as they ruthlessly punished West Ham’s woeful marking.

Gabriel Martinelli’s pin-point cross found Odegaard in acres of space and the midfielder blasted a volley past Lukasz Fabianski from an acute angle six yards out.

The turning point came in the 33rd minute when Arsenal, looking a little over-confident after such a swaggering start, needlessly conceded a penalty.

Thomas Partey surrendered possession to Declan Rice and when the West Ham midfielder picked out Lucas Paqueta’s run, Gabriel Magalhaes’ mistimed sliding tackle was correctly ruled a penalty despite Arsenal appeals for handball.

Mohamed Salah had missed a penalty against Arsenal last weekend, but they were out of luck this time as Benrahma sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way from the spot.

Saka should have eased Arsenal’s mounting anxiety when Antonio conceded a 50th minute penalty with an outstretched arm that blocked Martinelli’s flick.

But instead Saka spiked the tension level even higher with a woeful spot-kick that completely missed hit the target, a costly blunder that recalled the England forward’s Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out failure against Italy.

Saka held his head in his hands and with Arsenal clearly rattled, David Moyes’ side snatched an equaliser in the 54th minute.

Thilo Kehrer guided the ball into the Arsenal area and Bowen was just onside as his volley ricocheted off the turf and skidded past Ramsdale’s despairing dive.

Michail Antonio nearly won it for West Ham in the closing stages, rising to head Benrahma’s cross against the bar.

MAN UTD’S BIG BOOST AS FOREST MANAGER BLASTS ‘TERRIBLE’ VAR CALL

Meanwhile, injury-hit Manchester United beat relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest 2-0 to strengthen their push for a top-four Premier League finish.

Erik ten Hag’s men took full advantage of defeats for rivals Newcastle and Tottenham the previous day to climb to third in the table, courtesy of goals from Antony and Diogo Dalot.

The teams had already met three times this season, including in a two-legged League Cup semi-final — with United winning on each occasion.

Injured United central-defensive pairing Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were replaced by Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, while Dalot came in for Tyrell Malacia.

The visitors, also missing top-scorer Marcus Rashford, were forced into a late change when midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was injured in the warm-up and replaced by Christian Eriksen, making his first start since January following an ankle injury.

Forest, who had not won in their past nine games, made four changes. United were quickly out of the blocks and Jadon Sancho had a strike blocked in the opening moments.

The visitors dominated possession but Steve Cooper’s Forest were a menace from set-pieces.

Forest goalkeeper Keylor Navas saved from Bruno Fernandes before a VAR check for a potential penalty at the other end after the ball hit Maguire’s arm from a corner.

“Harry Maguire’s was a definitely penalty [for handball],” Nottingham manager Cooper said post-game.

“Then a second yellow card and red. A terrible decision. How have VAR not picked up on that? Another call and apology from them then, which won’t help.”

United took the lead in the 32nd minute when Antony poked home after Navas parried a powerful shot from Anthony Martial.

Dalot almost gifted Forest an equaliser shortly before half-time after some sloppy play but Taiwo Awoniyi smashed the ball well over.

Fernandes put a header wide from the centre of the box just before the break. United continued to dominate in the second half, with Fernandes and Eriksen pulling the strings.

Portugal international Fernandes produced a stunning curling effort from the left of the box that was pushed on to the bar by Navas and Antony fired just wide.

Martial missed a glorious chance to extend United’s lead when he headed wide with 20 minutes to go before Forest defender Felipe nodded over from close range.

United finally got the reward their dominance deserved in the 76th minute when Dalot burst into the box to meet a pass by Antony to score his first Premier League goal.

The win leaves United three points clear of fourth-placed Newcastle after 30 games, and six clear of Tottenham, in fifth.

“Solid win,” Ten Hag told the BBC.

“Really focused and concentrated from start to finish.”

The United boss remarked on a “really solid performance from all on the pitch today”, singling out Maguire and Lindelof for praise.

“Last week I had nine fit top defenders, now I have four,” he said.

“We need all our players — we are still in three competitions. We need all the players to form a top team.”

The Red Devils have surpassed last season’s Premier League points tally with eight matches still to play as they turn their attention to this week’s Europa League and FA Cup clashes.

Forest remain in the bottom three and are in serious danger of returning to the Championship after just one season in the English top flight.
