‘A bit naughty’ – Jamie Carragher criticised for Trent Alexander-Arnold comments

Jamie Carragher’s reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool exit didn’t sit well with talkSPORT’s Darren Bent.

The full-back is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season once his contract expires.

Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Real Madrid on a five-year deal worth more than £220,000-a-week.

His move will bring to an end a 21-year association with the Reds, with Carragher admitting he is ‘disappointed’ to see the defender leave.

Reacting to the news, he told the Stick To Football podcast: “Where I’m at is that as a local player and a Liverpool fan, Liverpool are in a position where they’re competing for the league and a European Cup every year.

“So, if you’re a Liverpool fan and a local player, I’m just disappointed that he doesn’t think that this is it.

“I’m putting myself in his position where I’d be thinking that we could go level with Manchester United in league trophies, I’ve got another seven or eight years at Liverpool and want to get three or four ahead of them, with a couple more European Cups.”

However, Bent believes Carragher’s remarks are a ‘little bit naughty’ as Alexander-Arnold faces backlash from supporters.

The talkSPORT co-host has instead called for the Reds legend to get behind the departing star.

Bent told Drive: “I mean that from Jamie Carragher. I just can’t see Trent thinking about that.

“I know what he’s saying there. If you’re homegrown, you’re a Scouse lad, Liverpool’s been your club, you’ve got the chance to go past Man United in terms of league titles.

“I don’t think, certainly modern day footballers, are thinking about that. We’ve all caused this kind of problem where it’s almost like football only existed since the Premier League started.

Bent labelled Carragher's remarks are a 'little bit naughty'

“So Trent’s not going to be thinking, ‘well, we’ve got the same league titles’. He’s not thinking that at all whatsoever.

“He’s just thinking about the Premier League only because a lot of us younger generation do.

“It’s a little bit naughty (from Carragher) because I just think that you could understand that you’re from the city, you’re a big personality in that city, you’ve done great things for that city as well.

“And you know the amount of noise that’s around Trent and the pictures we’re seeing people burning Trent jerseys. So he’s probably finding it really difficult. You need people in your corner.”

Liverpool are set to equal Manchester United’s record tally for league titles this season.

Arne Slot’s side sit 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with just nine matches remaining.

Winning the league would equal United’s 20 titles, with the Reds then able to surpass their rivals next season with another triumph.

It would also be Alexander-Arnold’s second Premier League winners’ medal after lifting the trophy under Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

Overall, the 26-year-old has won eight trophies with his boyhood club including the Champions League and Club World Cup.

He has also made a total of 349 appearances for Liverpool since his first-team debut aged 18 more than eight years ago.

  • talkSPORT host shocked by Arsenal fan Darren Bent’s wild Conference League claim

talkSPORT host shocked by Arsenal fan Darren Bent’s wild Conference League claim

talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein could barely conceal his shock following a rather bold claim from co-host Darren Bent.

With the international break nearing its conclusion, talkSPORT fans were asked for their say on the age-old debate regarding club glory or national team success.

    5

A whopping 82 per cent from over 500 respondents said they would prefer to see their club lift a trophy rather than see the Three Lions triumph on the international stage.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Goldstein claimed witnessing England succeed would mean far more than watching his beloved Manchester United win silverware.

However, Bent – a passionate Arsenal supporter – labelled Goldstein ‘nuts’ and revealed he would side with the 82 per cent.

“I want to feel euphoria for north London – and the red part of it,” Bent said.

Goldstein replied by asking Bent if he would take Arsenal winning the Champions League if it meant England would never win another game.

Bent replied: “Yeah, that’s fine with me.”

The Drive host further prodded Bent for how deep his club loyalties ran as he asked the former Premier League marksman if he’d rather see Arsenal win the League Cup or even the Europa Conference League instead of England ending their 59 years of hurt.

    “Anything,” Bent replied.

“Anything. I promise you, League Cup, Conference League, anything.”

However, Bent was quick to clarify his tune and insisted his stance was purely from a fan’s perspective.

“But as a player, I’d take England over anything, I’d win the World Cup over any competition,” Bent said.

“To win the treble as a player or win the World Cup, I’m taking the World Cup, as a player. The World Cup is the pinnacle, but as a fan (club over country)…”

Bent made his England debut against Uruguay in 2006 and went on to win a total of 13 caps, with his last coming in 2011.

He netted four times for the Three Lions, with goals coming against Switzerland, Denmark, Wales and Montenegro.

Although Bent and a majority of the voters on talkSPORT’s poll will have disagreed, there’s plenty out there who may have forgot to vote and would love nothing more than to see England win the World Cup.

The Three Lions have not any silverware since the 1966 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel has been entrusted with ending the lengthy wait and began his England tenure brightly.

Tuchel’s side got their World Cup qualification off to a strong start as they beat Albania and Latvia 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

England will next be in action on June 7 when they travel to Andorra for their third World Cup qualification match.

Rapper AJ Tracey phones talkSPORT to call out host’s Ronaldo view

AJ Tracey personally phoned talkSPORT after Darren Bent claimed Mohamed Salah has been better in the Premier League than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The rapper couldn’t believe what he was hearing on Monday’s edition of Drive from the former England striker, although Bent did appear to get Tracey round to his way of thinking by the end of the exchange.

Bent’s claim came after Salah scored his 25th Premier League goal of the season on Sunday.

He also grabbed an assist in Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Manchester City to move to 41 goal contributions in the league this term.

Liverpool’s win at the Etihad Stadium also saw Salah break a number of other records, while also equalling a very impressive one from the great Lionel Messi.

However, Tracey was quick to shut down the suggestion that the Egyptian has surpassed Manchester United legend Ronaldo.

Turning his attention to the talkSPORT co-host’s comments, the musician fumed: “One more thing I just want to squeeze in there, don’t you ever dare say that Mohamed Salah is better than CR7. Don’t you ever, ever.”

However, Bent quickly clarified he had only been talking in terms of the pair’s Premier League careers.

The ex-forward replied: “In terms of the Premier League era, I’m saying Salah has been better. Not ever.”

Tracey continued his argument, though, explaining: “Alright, Premier League era, you could say that, yeah? But not ever.

“But this is the thing, though, yeah? When we take a snapshot of time, it’s a little bit inaccurate.

“Because, you know, if you want to say, is (Eden) Hazard a better player than Salah, a lot of people are going to argue with you and say Hazard’s better.

“Personally, I would say Hazard’s a more gifted player. Salah’s done more, you know, in the Premier League.

“So we’re going to have to say, you know, in the Premier League era, yeah, you’d say Salah’s a better player, but just as a footballer, and acknowledging with the eye test, because you know, today’s all about stats.

“It’s not all about stats. And with the eye test, you’re going to say, you know, objectively, I’d say Hazard’s a better player. CR7, I would say is a better footballer than Salah, but Salah’s done more in the Premier League. If we’re going to land there, I can agree with you.”

Bent agreed, adding: “Yeah, no argument there, but CR7 is one of the greatest of all time.

“But if you look at what Salah’s doing in the Premier League, if you could have one in the Premier League era at Tottenham, which one do you have?”

Spurs fan Tracey simply responded: “On my life, I promise you, on my life, I’m taking CR7, bro. I was at Spurs when CR7 was absolutely battering us.”

Ronaldo won three Premier League titles and a Golden Boot during his first spell in England with Manchester United.

The Portuguese ultimately scored 103 goals in 236 league appearances for the Red Devils over the course of two stints at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Salah now has 182 strikes in 290 Premier League appearances, with two of those goals coming in his 13 league matches for Chelsea.

The Reds forward is also a three-time Golden Boot winner across his previous seven seasons at Anfield.

He currently leads the race for this season’s award by six goals ahead of Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland.

Salah is set to clinch a second league title as well, with Liverpool now 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Mohamed Salah has done more for the Premier League than Cristiano Ronaldo

Mohamed Salah will go down as a bigger Premier League great than Cristiano Ronaldo.

That’s the view of talkSPORT host Darren Bent, who was discussing the Liverpool forward’s legacy with special guest Emmanuel Petit on Drive.

    4

Salah is a true Premier League great, believes PetitCredit: Getty

Salah is facing an uncertain future with his contract at Anfield set to expire in the summer.

While Liverpool have been told that retaining the star would actually save them more than £70million, the uncertainty hasn’t had any sort of negative impact on his performances.

If anything, Salah’s performances have hit new heights with the Egyptian star scoring 27 goals and providing 19 assists in just 35 games this term.

With 345 goal involvements in 384 matches for the Merseysiders, Salah will undoubtedly be a huge miss if he does leave the club this summer.

That’s the view of Arsenal legend Petit, who waxed lyrical about the 32-year-old.

Asked if he’s the greatest player ever in the Premier League, Petit said: “Amazing. He’s one of them, definitely.

“He’s won everything with Liverpool so far and has been such a great player for them and it’s a joy, even if you’re not a Liverpool fan.

“That’s what the Premier League is about – getting the best players in the world and to be honest I love everything about Mo Salah.

“I love the player, I love the man, I love the image and everything. There’s nothing I don’t like about him and I’m very, very hard to please.

“For me, I’d have loved to have been his teammate because the way he plays and the link with the fans and the club – I don’t know what will happen to him at the end of this season but I hope he will stay in the Premier League because this is why I want to watch a game, because of this kind of player.

“This guy is a joy for everything he’s done and for me, he’s the best in Premier League history. He’s one of the best, he’s among the best.

“I won’t compare to Ryan Giggs or Thierry Henry because it’s a different generation and football is not the same so I’m not comparing with 20 years ago but it’s about the emotion that these players will leave at a club.

“In 20 years time I think that people will talk about him as one of the greatest players in the Premier League.”

But while Petit wouldn’t be drawn on comparisons, Bent expressed his belief that Salah will be remembered more fondly in England than Ronaldo.

Despite closing in on 1,000 career goals, Ronaldo scored 103 times in 236 Premier League games for Manchester United, leading the ex-Tottenham forward to pile more praise on Salah.

Responding to Petit, Arsenal fan Bent added: “I agree, I think he’s one of the greatest in Premier League history.

“But if I’m building an all-time Premier League team – on that right-hand side, there’s no debate.

‘Are you mad?’ – Noel Gallagher in hysterics at Darren Bent’s huge Arsenal claim

Darren Bent was branded ‘out of his mind’ by Noel Gallagher after he made an optimistic Arsenal prediction.

Gallagher, a diehard Manchester City supporter, joined Bent and Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT Drive to preview his side’s Champions League play-off clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday night.

    3

City host the first leg of the tie before travelling to the Spanish capital on February 19, with the winner to face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.

Given City scraped into the play-off stage of the new-look Champions League format and had to come from behind to beat League One side Leyton Orient in the FA Cup last Saturday, Gallagher isn’t exactly feeling confident.

“I feel like I’m going to watch it from behind the couch, if I’m honest,” Gallagher said.

The Oasis rocker added: “We haven’t shown any evidence in the Champions League this season that we’re going to do anything in it.

“Sadly for us, [Kylian] Mbappe’s bound to click into gear. Ever since the (FA) cup final last season, a malaise has set in. Any time the opposition goes over the halfway line, you’re just expecting them to score.

“If it was a one-off game, toss of a coin… but over two legs, I just can’t see it.”

The conversation between the trio then shifted towards Bent’s beloved Arsenal, who he conceded were out of the Premier League title race.

Although the Gunners sit just six points behind league leaders Liverpool, the Reds have a game in hand and will be hard to stop.

However, Bent believes Arsenal can still end the season with some silverware.

Bent reminded Goldstein what he said earlier in the season about which competition Arsenal would win, to which Goldstein responded: “Champions League.”

Bent believes Arsenal are due to end their wait for a European trophy

The claim left Gallagher in hysterics as he replied: “You what with the Champions League? Are you mad?”

Despite Gallagher’s shock, Bent doubled down on his stance.

“The league is done, I think the league is done,” Bent said.

“But the Champions League, we’ve got a great chance. One of the big ones are going in the second leg, so that’s one of them gone.

    “So, it’s our time.”

Bent’s bold belief in the Gunners only prompted more laughter from Gallagher.

“I listen every day,” Gallagher said.

“The amount of times I’ve had the phone in my hand thinking, ‘I’m going to call in here, because he’s out of his mind.’”

Luckily for Arsenal, they breezed through the league phase of the Champions League phase to avoid competing in the play-offs.

They await either Juventus, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord or AC Milan in the last 16.

A major European trophy has proved elusive for Arsenal having finished as runners-up in the 2005/06 Champions League to Barcelona and in the 2018/19 Europa League to Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term, their deepest run in the tournament since 2010.

But Bent evidently believes this current crop of Gunners stars are the ones to go even further and make club history.

  • Myles Lewis-Skelly can be the next Ashley Cole – he already boasts two PL highs

Myles Lewis-Skelly can be the next Ashley Cole – he already boasts two PL highs

Myles Lewis-Skelly may have finally solved Arsenal’s left-back issue following Ashley Cole’s controversial departure in 2006.

The academy graduate is enjoying a stunning breakthrough season at the Emirates Stadium, resulting in him being tipped to earn a senior England call-up.

    5

Lewis-Skelly has featured in 19 games in all competitions, and opened his account for the club on Sunday during the Gunners’ 5-1 thumping of Manchester City.

His dazzling display against the Premier League champions saw him likened to Jude Bellingham and Wayne Rooney.

But for ex-Tottenham striker Darren Bent – a diehard Gooner – it’s fellow Hale End graduate Cole that Lewis-Skelly boasts similar traits to.

Cole became one of the world’s greatest left-backs having come up through the ranks at Highbury – winning two league titles and three FA Cups before joining rivals Chelsea.

It’s a position that has plagued Arsenal since – especially in recent years under Mikel Arteta‘s tutelage.

In what has become a somewhat cursed spot in the team, Jurrien Timber, Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all battled serious injuries.

It led Arsenal to splash out a potential £38million on Riccardo Calafiori last summer to fix their problem – only for the Italian to be struck by regular setbacks.

His absence has paved the way for Lewis-Skelly to receive game time, with Arteta transforming him from a box-to-box midfielder to an attacking full-back.

Waxing lyrical over Lewis-Skelly’s performance against City on talkSPORT Drive, Bent said: “You can quite clearly see the trust in him when they give him the ball.

“But I thought he defended really well, he was strong, scored a great goal.”

Interjecting, co-host Andy Goldstein then revealed that Bent told him off-air that Lewis-Skelly is better on the ball than what Cole was, insisting his view is an ‘unbelievable statement’.

To which Bent, doubling down on his view, remarked: “Yeah, I think so.

“We both agree that Ashley Cole is one of the best left-backs in Premier League history.

“But his [Lewis-Skelley’s] touch, his little bit of arrogance that I like, strong in possession, can score a goal.

“He looks comfortable, he’s got the trust of his teammates as well.

“Hale End, that place is renowned for bringing through great kids, [Bukayo] Saka, [Jack] Wilshere, people like that.

Bent believes Lewis-Skelly is better on the ball that what Cole was at Arsenal

    5

“And these are the next two, [Ethan] Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly.”

Bent’s view of Lewis-Skelly being better on the ball than Cole is backed up by the youngster’s incredible passing stats.

He has completed a whopping 248 successful passes from his 260 attempts – a staggering success rate of 95.4 per cent.

It is the highest figure of any Premier League player this season who has featured in at least 45 minutes.

Another standout aspect of Lewis-Skelly’s game is his physicality, with no player yet to dribble past him from his 553 minutes of top-flight action.

Lewis-Skelly has also impressively won 74.2 per cent of his duels.

Simon Jordan and Martin Keown discuss Myles Lewis-Skelly mocking Haaland in Arsenal’s 5-1 win!

That’s another Premier League high from players that have contested more than 25.

And while he looks to establish the left-back spot at Arsenal as his own, just like Cole, he could soon hold down the role at England.

New Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel is known to be an admirer of the youngster, and could include him in his first squad for March’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

Similarly to Cole’s absence at Arsenal, the left-back spot has been an issue for England, with Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell unable to be relied upon due to injury.

As it stands, Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Ipswich’s Leif Davis and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell are Lewis-Skelly’s main competitors at international level.

But as shown for Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly only needs to be given a chance to prove if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.

  • Darren Bent names Premier League club that would be perfect fit for Paul Pogba

Darren Bent names Premier League club that would be perfect fit for Paul Pogba

Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has claimed Paul Pogba would be a good fit for Arsenal.

Pogba could return to the Premier League on a free and Bent feels he could aid the Gunners’ push for their first title since 2004.

    2

Ligue 1 side Marseille are understood to be readying themselves to move for PogbaCredit: AFP

Arsenal are yet to sign anyone this transfer window and fans are growing worried the club are going to miss out on another chance at the title.

Pogba has been without a club since November when his contract with Juventus was terminated.

Since then, the 31-year-old has been gearing up for his grand return to football by training in Miami and is hoping to secure a new club this month.

The midfielder saw his four-year doping ban reduced to 18 months on appeal meaning he is free to return to the pitch in March.

The free agent has been linked with a host of clubs across the globe with interest from the Premier League, Ligue 1, MLS and the Saudi Pro League.

Pogba hinted at a third Manchester United stint but talkSPORT understands that Man United are not entertaining the idea of re-signing him.

“Would I take him at Arsenal, three month loan, absolutely?” said Darren Bent. “Just because of the injuries we’ve had and a little bit of squad rotation.

“There’s still Champions League football and a league push. There’s a lot of games. He might not play many minutes but just to have him about and see where he’s at.

“I’m not committing long term, no way, but short term I’d give that a go.”

Arsenal’s main problem this season is their lack of clinical finishing so a striker or prolific winger would be the way to solve their dilemma.

Pogba played for United across two spells having come through the club's academy

    2

Pogba played for United across two spells having come through the club’s academy

Not a midfielder whose previous time in England is often debated as an underachievement.

Mikel Arteta giving the green light for Pogba would be unlikely as the manager does not favour someone on the wrong side of thirty.

However, the Spaniard has done so before when Jorginho joined on January deadline day from Chelsea in 2023 aged 31.

An example that shows Arteta isn’t exactly in strong disagreement with signing Pogba but it would be a risk considering the Frenchman is not match fit, having not played since September 2023.

Furthermore, Martin Zubimendi – a midfielder from Real Sociedad – is reported to be joining Arsenal in the summer after advanced talks.

A possible pre-agreed deal that would rule out Pogba’s possibility of returning to the Premier League.

Potter given West Ham masterplan amid Rashford links following return to dugout

Graham Potter has been urged to sign a striker as Darren Bent outlined what he must do to transform West Ham’s fortunes.

The Englishman was appointed as the Irons’ new boss on Thursday after Julen Lopetegui was relieved of his duties following a disappointing start to the season.

    7

Potter is the new man in charge at West Ham

Potter, who opened his spell at West Ham with a defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Hammers, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

This is the former Brighton head coach’s first managerial role since his dismissal from Chelsea in April 2023, and he certainly has his work cut out to things around at the London Stadium.

The east London outfit, who have asked to be informed of Marcus Rashford’s situation at Manchester United, sit seven points above the relegation zone, with just six league wins to their name all season.

And talkSPORT’s Bent admitted there is plenty of room for improvement, as he identified as many as seven key areas which Potter must develop to turn the tides at West Ham.

Speaking on Drive, the former Tottenham striker stated addressing West Ham’s tactics is a top priority for Potter.

He said: “The first thing I’d say he’s got to do is fix the style of play.

“I think when you look at West Ham under David Moyes, that was the one thing that the West Ham fans were talking about.”

He went on: “I just think the style of play just wasn’t good enough. Look at where they are in terms of average possession, they’re 14th. Their average is 46.7 per cent possession.”

Despite hopes that Lopetegui would introduce a more entertaining approach at the London Stadium, the Hammers have failed to kick on in this regard.

This season, they have scored just 24 goals, placing them in the bottom six of all of the Premier League teams.

However, with Potter earning plaudits for his possession-based game whilst in charge of Brighton, Bent was optimistic that he will help to get the best out of West Ham’s players.

He continued: “Now, Potter, with him in charge, that will increase quite significantly.

“The way that he plays – front foot football, getting your attacking players to ball in the right areas.”

Next on Potter’s to-do list was bolstering their attacking options.

Winger Jarrod Bowen has shouldered the goalscoring responsibility for West Ham this season, with summer signing Niclas Fullkrug managing just two league goals all season.

And with Michail Antonio out for an extended period, Bent admitted that the Irons could do with a new focal point up front.

He said: “I think Jarrod Bowen’s their top goalscorer with five. Then it’s [Tomas] Soucek and [Mohammed] Kudus.

“Kudus has got three goals – he is so much better than that, than three goals!”

“The reason why I say sign a top quality centre forward, I really like Niklas Fulkrug, I thought he was brilliant at the Euros for Germany. He scored a good goal in their last game.

“But he’s 31-years-old now. That’s a short-term fix. That doesn’t tell me you’re going to be a centre forward for the next five, six years.

“So I would go out and try and sign a proper centre forward.”

Among Potter’s other key focus areas were improving West Ham’s home form, and getting the best out of playmaker Lucas Paqueta.

Stressing the importance of improving home form, Bent said: “They’ve got to make the London Stadium a fortress. Make it solid, a hard place to go.

“At the minute, they’re 15th in the home table. There’s no way you can deliver the goods or have a good season if you’re home form, you’re only 15th in the Premier League table.

“You have to be better than that. So they’ve won three games at home all season in the Premier League. That’s not good enough.”

And Bent believes Potter must get the best out of Paqueta, who scored in 2-1 defeat to Villa, if he wishes his time in the capital to be a success.

The former England striker urged: “You’ve got to re-find Paqueta’s form. I think he is a top, top quality player, but this season we haven’t seen the best of him.

“He’s got so much ability, so much quality. I think you’ve got to find the best position for him and get the best out of him. Because once he gets them playing, then they are a better team with him.”

Furious Man United fan has wild ‘8-0’ prediction for Liverpool match

talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein admitted he fears the worst for Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool this weekend in a furious rant.

The Red Devils are enduring a difficult season and currently sit 14th in the Premier League, with results failing to improve since the introduction of new head coach Ruben Amorim in November.

Having suffered four straight losses, there is arguably no worse time for United to be facing off against bitter rivals Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s side are flying high and boast a six-point gap at the top of the table heading into Sunday’s encounter, off the back of a thumping 5-0 win away at West Ham.

And the two teams’ contrasting fortunes have left avid United fan Goldstein fearful his side could suffer humiliation at Anfield.

So much so, in fact, that the presenter believes Amorim’s group of players could lose as heavily as 8-0 to their sworn enemies.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive alongside Darren Bent, the presenter pointed to the Reds’ recent 6-3 win at Tottenham as a indicator of the huge attacking threat United will face.

Goldstein said: “This weekend, and I’m not joking here, but Man United are playing Liverpool, I think the best team on the planet at the moment.

“We saw that when they went to Spurs, [they] scored six goals against Spurs, who were weakened by the way.”

He continued: “But having said that, it was at Spurs. This is at Anfield.”

Goldstein then reminded co-host Bent of another day to forget for United in recent years, when they were thrashed 7-0 at Anfield in March 2023, and asked him if he felt a worse result could be on the cards this weekend.

He continued: “It wasn’t that long ago we lost 7-0, I don’t want to sound all doom and gloom.”

“Let me ask you two questions, right? Is it inconceivable United could be 5-0 down at half time on Sunday?”

    To this, Bent replied: “No.”

Goldstein then probed his colleague: “Is it possible Liverpool could score three second-half goals?”, to which Bent agreed.

Continuing his furious rant, the Red Devils fan went on: “Right. Man United could lose 8-0 at the weekend. I doubt it, and it might just be 3-0 or 4-0, right?

“If Manchester United lose 8-0, or let’s say 6-0, because 8-0 is a bit nuts, then where do you go from there?”

And this wasn’t Goldstein’s only concern heading into the weekend, as also he questioned Amorim’s team selections since taking charge.

Among these were the 39-year-old’s continued use of a three-at-the-back system, despite the Red Devils shipping 11 goals in their four consecutive defeats.

While Goldstein admitted he feels Amorim is still the right man for the job, he criticised his reluctance to change his tactics.

He said: “All I’ll say is I haven’t seen anything yet. Usually when a new manager comes in, you know he’s the right man. You go: ‘I see where he’s going, I see what he’s trying to do’.

“But he hasn’t changed anything. We constantly have a pop at Ange Postecoglou for only having plan A. Well, Ruben Amorim, so far has only had plan A and he’s playing three at the back.

“And he says: ‘We can’t change it. If we change it, we’re broken, dead’.

“And I get all that, but you’ve got to have a plan. If it’s not working, you’ve got to have a plan B.”

‘We had no choice’: Deflated Ange’s big revelation as Spurs’ crisis deepens

Falling behind early, hitting the lead, missing a penalty, conceding late, more injury blows, boos from the fans, it has became an all too familiar tale for Tottenham.

The ever-repeating script played out once again in a 2-2 draw at home to relegation-threatened Wolves as the scrutiny on Ange Postecoglou intensifies.

The visitors, who are unbeaten with two wins and a draw since Vitor Pereira took over as manager, opened the scoring in the seventh minute with Hwang Hee-chan curling home a superb strike from the top of the box after a brilliant set play from a free kick.

To add to the moans and groans of the home fans, the first goal created an unwanted slice of history for Spurs.

It was the 15th time in 2024 they have conceded the opening goal of a Premier League game at home, the most ever in a calendar year.

Things looked back on track as Rodrigo Bentancur header from a corner and Brennan Johnson’s classy finish from a pass from Dejan Kulusevski put Tottenham in front at half time.

It could have been a two goal advantage however, as Johnson was brought down in the box minutes before his goal but Son Heung-min’s penalty was saved, and it proved to be costly.

Tottenham looked spent in the second half and they paid the price in the 87th minute when Strand Larsen smashed the ball into the roof of the net from a ridiculously tight angle to equalise, and create more unwanted records for Spurs.

They are now winless in five straight home Premier League matches, the first time since October 2008 when they failed to win eight straight times at home before manager Juande Ramos was sacked.

Reds hammer West Ham in 5-0 rout | 00:45

At present, Tottenham sit 11th on the table with 24 points from 19 outings.

They have won once in their last seven matches, and a dealing with an injury crisis at the back.

All those factors are why The UK Telegraph’s football news correspondent Matt Law wrote that “watching Spurs should come with a health warning even for the club’s young fans”.

Meanwhile, The Times’ James Gheerbrant believes Postecoglou is now stuck in an awkward position in his Tottenham tenure.

“Right now, they either win in style or fold under duress, an unhappy binary for any team, and one which leaves them in the bottom half at the year’s end, and their head coach Ange Postecoglou in an uncomfortable limbo,” he wrote.

“At the start of 2024, Tottenham were fifth in the Premier League, Postecoglou’s win rate stood at 60 per cent, and the energy around his project felt buoyant. The past 12 months have featured a slowdown in results and a dissipation of that positivity.

“A significant cluster of injuries and absences has hurt them this season, providing some partial mitigation for their poor form, and what must be beginning to feel to Postecoglou like a relentless inundation of bad news…”

Postecoglou made the bold call to play Radu Dragusin despite the centre back clearly not being match fit after sustaining an ankle injury in Spurs’ Boxing Day loss at shock second-place sitters Nottingham Forest.

It is an example of things going from bad to worse with Postecoglou justifying the decision to send the Romanian onto the pitch by saying “we had no choice. If Radu doesn’t play I don’t know who plays”.

First choice centre back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been sidelined with injury for Tottenham’s past six matches in all competitions, while other option Ben Davies has been out of action since their trip to Bournemouth earlier this month.

As a result, 18-year-old Archie Gray, who has mainly been a midfielder or right-back during his young career, has been trying to hold the fort in the central defensive positions alongside Dragusin, and even with the support of midfielder Yves Bissouma when Dragusin went down at Forest.

To add further pain, left back Destiny Udogie also picked up a hamstring injury and Bentancur’s late booking rules him out of Saturday’s match at home against Newcastle.

The selection headaches make for “fragile foundations”, as Postecoglou famously said of the club after their fans were cheering for their side to lose to Manchester City in the penultimate match of last season to prevent rivals Arsenal from winning the league, that only grow the Australian’s frustrations.

“It doesn’t feel like we’re getting a smooth run at anything,” Postecoglou said post-match. “As soon as we get one back we lose one. We have to get through it. There’s still a hell of a lot for us to play for. With what’s on the horizon, we have to give the players all the support we can to perform at their best.”

Speaking on Sky Sports post-match, former Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent expressed his belief that most of Tottenham’s issues stem from what is happening at the club during the week, rather than on match day.

Bent, who scored four goals from 13 appearances at international level, is adamant that Spurs’ current playing group’s conditioning is not at the level required for Postecoglou’s high octane style of play.

“The medical department, surely Ange is saying ‘what is going on here?’ because I do feel for him in that regard, that he’s getting so many injuries, but they’ve got to look at that,” Bent said.

“You can’t keep having the same players breaking down with the same injuries.

“When you look at the way that they play, the intensity that they play at, clearly they’re not training at the same level that they’re playing at cause that’s where the injuries come from.

“Usually, if you train a lesser tempo and you’re expected to go out on a Saturday and play at this Angeball pace that’s 100 miles an hour, you’re going to break down all the time.

“Also, the recovery situation. They have players that keep getting the same injury has got to be a concern as well, van de Ven, we know how quick he is. He changes the whole dynamic of the back line, but you can’t keep having the same injury, hamstring, over and over and over again. At some point, someone’s got to go. You know what, he may be ready now but let’s give it another two weeks, three weeks, just to make sure.”

In the same panel discussion on Sky Sports, former Tottenham midfielder and manager Tim Sherwood agreed with Bent that more of the heat needs to be directed towards Spurs’ medical staff.

Arsenal keep pressure on Liverpool | 01:27

Sherwood, who captained Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League title in 1995, also believes that Postecoglou needs greater support from the club in the form of spending more money to build greater squad depth in the upcoming January transfer window.

“He’s going to stick to what he’s doing. What he knows best and that’s playing this way. He just needs a little bit of help in the transfer market in January, I’d suggest,” Sherwood said.

“I’m not sure what sort of quality of players they can bring in, or get some players back. Udogie gets injured today, another hamstring, so something must be happening.

“I thought in the world of sports scientists, that was all eradicated but it seems to be increasing. I don’t think they’re overtrained, players these days, I think they’re undertrained.

“I don’t know what goes on day-to-day at the training ground, but to continually pick up muscle injuries, there must be something they need to look at.”

As for how Postecoglou is managing this incredibly difficult stretch, Sherwood believes he is simply doing what he can.

“I don’t think he’s running out of ideas because he’s got clear ideas of how he wants to play. I think what he is struggling with is the depth of the squad. He’s not being able to rest his squad,” Sherwood said.

“I made a point during the game of, they’ve got the two centre backs missing, Micky van de Ven and Romero, and Vicario, the goal keeper.

“Other than that, it’s a full strength side.

“What the problem is, is when he wants to make the changes, he doesn’t have the quality off the bench to make the changes, and everyone is having to play all of the minutes, all of the time.

EPL powerhouses fail to fire | 02:11

“He’s trying to rest them. He’s trying to juggle it up to keep them fresh.

“Talk about sharpness in the final third, they haven’t got a problem scoring goals. We all know they can score goals. It’s trying to keep the opposition out.”

Tottenham fans have recently protested against club chair Daniel Levy for his reluctance to spend more to build a deeper squad.

It will fascinating to watch in the January transfer window how proactive Spurs are, but before any reinforcements can be brought on, Levy will be demanding better from the existing troops.

“Levy had a face like thunder in the stands and may well fear the worst ahead of a run of games that include Newcastle United next, Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and a trip to Arsenal,” the UK Telegraph’s Matt Law wrote.

“The way things are going, Spurs might not even be particularly confident about their FA Cup trip to Tamworth.”
