Liverpool were set to sign Mbappe after Klopp move, but ended up with Nunez

Kylian Mbappe will likely never fulfil his mother’s wish of playing in Liverpool red but that doesn’t mean he didn’t come close.

The Frenchman ended one of football’s most predictable transfer sagas by joining Real Madrid this summer but interest from Anfield had also always lingered over his career.

Liverpool came close to landing Mbappe as a teenager when he left Monaco in 2017, with Jurgen Klopp holding talks with the forward.

The capture of the then-18-year-old on lower wages but high potential represented the type of signing the club’s American owners love to make.

Fenway Sports Group chief John W. Henry held a two-hour meeting with Mbappe’s family on his private jet around the bay of Nice.

However, the player’s preference to remain in his homeland saw boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain win the race for his signature.

His subsequent rise to become the face of European football in the post-Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo era should have killed all talk of Liverpool’s net spend king owners FSG sanctioning any future move.

However, if anything, links between Mbappe and Merseyside increased during his time at PSG – aided by a courtship that played out in public.

Parisian outlet L’Equipe have now sensationally claimed the 25-year-old reached a verbal agreement to join Liverpool two years ago.

Mbappe is said to have struck terms on a short-term deal at Anfield before signing a two-year contract extension with PSG in 2022.

The Ligue 1 giants were desperate to avoid doing business with Madrid had they been forced into a sale that summer, but a provision was allegedly inserted in Mbappe’s Liverpool terms to facilitate a future move to the Bernabeu.

All sound too fanciful to be true? Perhaps, but let’s look at the evidence that could prove that maybe the signs were there all along…

Klopp’s early extension ‘good for transfer windows’

In April 2022, Klopp delighted Liverpool fans by announcing that he had put pen to paper on a two-year extension to his contract.

His deal hadn’t been due to expire until 2024 – ironically when he chose to leave the club anyway – but the timing is significant.

The futures of the German’s long-serving front three Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were much more pressing, with each of the trio about to enter the final years of their contracts.

Kylian Mbappe surprisingly reveals dream of playing for AC Milan as he closes in on Real Madrid transfer

As the three attackers were also approaching, or had already celebrated, their 30th birthdays at the time – historically when Liverpool’s FSG owners get skittish over offering out pay rises – a decision needed to be made over whether they would sign new deals or be moved on rather than risk losing them for free in 2023.

So why the fast-tracking of negotiations and announcement of an extension with Klopp?

Well, a day before Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Newcastle on April 30, Klopp claimed that it ‘made sense’ to confirm his commitment to the club before the end of the season, revealing it may aid the club’s transfer business in the summer.

    Mbappe: ‘My mum loves Liverpool’

Just 24 days after those comments from the Reds manager, Mbappe admitted in an interview that he had held talks with the club.

“We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit,’” Mbappe told The Telegraph. “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum; my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her.

“It’s a good club, and we met them five years ago (too). When I was in Monaco, I met them. It’s a big club.”

During those 2022 negotiations, the future of Klopp would undoubtedly have been discussed – with Mbappe a huge fan of the 57-year-old, whose sway over influencing any switch to the Premier League couldn’t be understated.

Speaking before Liverpool faced PSG in 2018, Klopp told RMC Sport: “I love him, to be honest. What a player he is and a nice lad as well, so he’s a really good kid. What a player, what a player.”

His 2022 assessment that his personal contract extension aiding transfer business may have been a subtle hint to Mbappe, with talks ongoing at that time.

Big decision – Salah or Mbappe?

Liverpool would have also had to draw up replacements to cope with the potential dual loss of Mane and Salah, who were not only on higher wages than Firmino, but could each accrue a bigger fee.

The former joined Bayern Munich that June, with the latter very close to following his fellow winger out the exit door that same month.

Salah’s lawyer and advisor Ramy Abbas Issa told a 2023 Harvard Business School study that Liverpool were ‘very far’ apart in contract talks and he feared a breakthrough wouldn’t be reached.

Ultimately, in July, the Egyptian became the highest-paid player in the club’s history on wages worth more than £350,000-a-week.

Those figures would have been impossible to offer with Mbappe also on the books, and the delay in settling on terms wasn’t about arguing over the finer details.

As Salah’s agent said for the purposes of the Harvard study and reported by the Times: “Mohamed isn’t going to throw away his contract because of a 5 per cent difference in what we are asking for and what they are willing to give — it is much more than that.”

Change of plans and new recruit

Let’s look at Liverpool’s incoming that summer, with only three senior arrivals prior to the panic deadline day loan for Arthur Melo.

Two of them were teenagers at the time, with right-back Calvin Ramsay arriving for £6.5m and Fabio Carvalho from Fulham.

The other was Darwin Nunez, who became the club’s record signing when he joined in June from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85m.

Liverpool are no strangers to shelling out on players they think are worth it, but every time before the Uruguayan came with more prep.

The Reds had tracked Alisson Becker from his time at Brazilian side Internacional on the advice of their former star Doni before stumping up a world-record fee for a goalkeeper in 2018.

So sure was the club about Virgil van Dijk that they waited an extra six months after Southampton initially put a roadblock on any move rather than pivot to another defender.

Nunez, 22 at the time, had only two seasons of top-flight football under his belt but was required to demonstrate a similarly transformative effect on Liverpool’s attack that they had done in defence.

Except the landscape with Mane, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino all leaving, and contract talks with Salah and Firmino at an impasse – with the latter leaving on a free the following summer – meant it was one the club couldn’t afford to take a gamble on to continue taking the fight to Manchester City, who had just unveiled Erling Haaland.

Yet Nunez, who couldn’t even understand Klopp and needed a translator, was billed as a long-term project who would need time to adapt in a way none of Liverpool’s other expensive signings had.

His transfer was widely pushed by Klopp having been impressed with the striker’s performances for Benfica in their Champions League quarter-final tie with his side.

Nunez scored both home and away in Benfica’s 6-4 aggregate defeat to Liverpool in…you guessed it…April 2022.

Liverpool later went on to sign Cody Gakpo before the year was out for a fee between £35m and £45m, having avoided rivalling Manchester United and Leeds for his services six months earlier.

So that’s over £100m on two players capable of playing centrally as well as on the left, and almost £500k-a-week on wages with the cost of Nunez’s arrival and Salah’s renewal…

Maybe it all wasn’t so far-fetched after all?

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez hit with lengthy ban for brawl

Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-game ban after clashing with fans during a game with Uruguay.

The Liverpool striker found himself in hot water after jumping into the crowd to protect his loved ones from a brawl as his country lost 1-0 to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final last month.

It’s understood he also tried to throw a chair, but was stopped before he could launch it.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a four-match ban.

However, neither stars’ suspension will impact their eligibility at club level, only their international fixtures.

Mathias Olivera, Ronaldo Araujo and Jose Gimenez have all also received three-game bans.

That means the Uruguayan stars will miss their friendly against Guatemala as well as their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Uruguay face Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador in their qualifying clashes – all fixtures Nunez will miss.

They currently sit in second after six games behind Argentina.

The top six will directly qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Mayhem had broken out in the stands after the final whistle of the Copa America match.

A section of the stadium close to where the players’ families were sat was targeted by drinks being launched and punches were thrown in the melee which saw players intervene to confront fans.

Uruguay players were heard shouting ‘with family no’ as tension rose in the stands.

Television cameras appeared to show Nunez hitting a Colombia fan who had slapped him first.

In a statement after the match, CONMEBOL said: “CONMEBOL strongly condemns any act of violence that affects football. Our work is based on the conviction that football connects us and unites us, through its positive values.

talkSPORT pundit worries that Darwin Nunez will never be good enough for Liverpool

“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their teams and having an unforgettable party.”

  • Zubimendi signs and England star follows: Liverpool XI to challenge for title

Zubimendi signs and England star follows: Liverpool XI to challenge for title

Liverpool are yet to make a summer signing but could soon field a starting XI ready for a potential title challenge.

The Reds will begin the Arne Slot era next Saturday away at Premier League new-boys Ipswich Town, live on talkSPORT.

There has been little to no transfer activity so far at Anfield apart from the notable departures of Thiago, Joel Matip and Adrian.

However, talkSPORT understands Liverpool are keen to make Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad their first signing under Slot.

A sensational move for Newcastle star Anthony Gordon, formerly of bitter city rivals Everton, has also been a talking point this summer.

Amid the potential pieces of business that could be completed for the new season, talkSPORT.com has looked at a possible new starting XI for Liverpool.

Alisson was pivotal to the club’s Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup success throughout Jurgen Klopp’s nine-year reign.

The Brazilian international has three years left on his contract and at 31-years-old, he is likely to still be their long-term starting goalkeeper.

Liverpool’s defence almost picks itself, with Andy Robertson set to remain as their first-choice left-back.

He missed a large chunk of last season through a shoulder injury but with his defensive experience and 65 assists in 297 appearances, he is a reliable asset for Slot.

Club captain Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a summer departure as he has just one year remaining on his deal at Anfield.

However, talkSPORT reported in June that Liverpool are confident he will stay, with the Dutchman arguably one of their greatest defenders ever.

Potentially set to start alongside Van Dijk at centre-back is Ibrahima Konate, with the pair making 64 appearances together for the Reds.

Throughout much of the summer, the most speculated potential exit has been their excellent academy product Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Having made 100 goal contributions in 310 appearances for Liverpool, the 25-year-old has emerged as a top transfer target for Real Madrid amid his contract expiry next summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold laughs off Real Madrid transfer joke that leaves Liverpool teammates Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz smiling

The right-back would be another big-name signing for the Spanish giants after Kylian Mbappe, but talkSPORT understands the Reds are confident the right-back will sign a new deal.

Speaking in his first Liverpool press conference, Slot explained how he likes to view his formation

“Sometimes it’s a 4-2-3-1, sometimes it’s a 4-1-4-1. Sometimes we do build-up with three. So there’s a lot of freedom when we have the ball.”

    He added: “I wouldn’t put myself in a situation where I say I prefer 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1.

Slot says his players have a lot of freedom when they're in possession

“There’s a lot of players taking in a lot of different positions so if you would have asked me, I would say we played 4-3-3 instead of 4-2-3-1 at Feyenoord.”

The eventual formation will soon be visible on the pitch and when it comes to the midfield, Zubimendi will add that further bit of quality.

A product of Sociedad’s academy, the Euro 2024 winner with Spain can play as both a defensive and central midfielder.

Liverpool fans will surely be pleased to hear that he idolises club legend Xabi Alonso, although the 25-year-old does currently have a £51million release clause.

Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones are other potential options, but the signing of Zubimendi may offer that little bit more.

One of the Reds’ standout players of last season was Alexis Mac Allister, whose initial £35million transfer fee emerged as somewhat of a bargain.

He scored seven goals and assisted another seven in his first season and like Zubimendi, he can play in defensive or central midfield.

Mac Allister shone in a more attacking role for Brighton so could play as the no.10 too, although Dominik Szoboszlai is another contender for that position and the two could interchange.

The Hungarian enjoyed a strong start to life at Liverpool before a slight dip in form but at 23-years-old and with his previous success at RB Leipzig, he could still make the difference.

Earlier in the window, talkSPORT reported that the Reds made a tentative enquiry to Newcastle for Gordon but talks broke down.

“His mind is on Newcastle,” Magpies boss Howe recently said on the former Everton man, although a potential transfer has certainly not been fully shut down just yet.

Gordon scored 12 goals and assisted another 11 for Newcastle across all competitions last season and would be an excellent addition at left-wing for Liverpool.

Along with Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah only has a year left on his contract and the Egyptian was linked with a huge £150million transfer to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad last summer.

talkSPORT reported in April that Liverpool are bracing themselves for a fresh approach from Saudi Arabia but if Salah is to stay, the club’s record Premier League scorer on 155 goals will start at right-wing.

Leading the line looks set to be Darwin Nunez, a player who many fans believe can still do even more in front of goal.

The Uruguayan scored 18 goals and assisted another 13 last season in all competitions, which is 12 more contributions than his debut campaign.

Mo Salah smashes Liverpool pre-season fitness tests ahead of surprise contender

Mohamed Salah has shown no signs of slowing down as he set the standard in Liverpool’s gruelling pre-season fitness tests.

The Arne Slot era at Anfield looks to be in full swing as the new manager and his coaching staff kicked things off by introducing a new test of their players’ endurance.

    3

Fans will have grown used to the infamous lactate test favoured by former boss Jurgen Klopp at the start of each pre-season, which was routinely won by veteran ex-Red James Milner.

But the departure of both over the past 12 months had left an opening for a new fitness king to be crowned at Liverpool.

And that gap appears to have now been filled, after star forward Salah reportedly shone in the new six-minute race test (6MRT) favoured by Slot and his team.

In the drill, players are required to cover as much ground as possible during six minutes of running around a 400m race track.

According to The Athletic, the Egypt captain, who returned to training last week just days after the first set of Reds players, knocked other standout performer Sepp van den Berg off the top of the leaderboard.

Dutch defender van den Berg, who spent last season on loan at Bundesliga side Mainz and has been linked with an exit this summer, initially set the benchmark, before Salah then recorded the furthest distance covered out of the entire team.

The 32-year-old’s impressive physical condition was hailed by fitness coach Conall Murtagh, who is quoted as calling him ‘phenomenal’.

Salah took on the gruelling test alongside teammate Wataru Endo, with the pair returning together following their involvement in international matches for Egypt and Japan.

Murtagh had urged the experienced duo: “It’s important to show your mentality. Show the lads how it’s done as leaders in the group.”

The forward’s strong start on the training pitch will please both Slot and the Reds’ faithful, with it arguably displaying his intent for the coming season, despite being yet to sign a new deal at the club.

Liverpool legend John Barnes reveals he turned down Real Madrid to stay at Anfield

Salah is one of three key players still to agree new terms on a contract that expires next summer, alongside players Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

In the meantime, the wing wizard will join the Reds’ squad in jetting off to the US for their pre-season tour on July 26, where they will face Arsenal, Manchester United and Real Betis.

Manager Slot will be relying on the experience of the likes of Salah during this trip, with a number of senior figures set to miss out on the tour due to their involvement in the latter stages of the European Championship and Copa America respectively.

This includes Alexander-Arnold and fellow England teammate Joe Gomez, France’s Ibrahima Konate and the Dutch trio of Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, who all featured in Euro 2024.

Meanwhile, Copa America winner Alexis Mac Allister, whilst Colombian’s Luis Diaz and Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez also took part in the competition and will not make the trip to the States.

With many of Liverpool’s stars yet to take on the dreaded fitness test, it remains to be seen whether Salah will make it to the end of summer still at the top of the leaderboard.

  • Arne Slot can help unlock Darwin Nunez’s potential by doing one thing

Arne Slot can help unlock Darwin Nunez’s potential by doing one thing

Former Liverpool star Rickie Lambert has given Darwin Nunez some crucial advice that could see him become the new Fernando Torres.

Nunez cuts a marmite figure at Liverpool where some appreciate his chaos up front and others just want him to score more goals.

    3

While the Uruguay international netted 18 times in all competitions, with 11 in the Premier League, there is undoubted talent there but he has been criticised for not scoring enough.

But not everyone has given up hope on the 24-year-old, including ex-Liverpool star Lambert, who believes he could be the club’s next Torres.

Speaking to Alan Brazil and Gabriel Agbonlahor on talkSPORT Breakfast, Lambert said: “I think as a fellow striker, I see the potential in him.

“I love him the way he is, if he stays the way he is, I love him. But I can see him being as powerful as Fernando Torres.

“That’s where I can see Nunez, we have got to stick with him.

“The next manager [Arne Slot] has got to get him on the training pitch and get him on repetition on shots, every angle, left foot, right foot.

“Within a few months or a year, those chances will start going in. His all-round game is already there.

“He can hold it up and he can get in behind. If a player at the top level can do that, you can’t let them go.

“If we let him go, without a doubt, he will turn into a world class player somewhere else.”

Slot will join as Liverpool’s next manager this summer to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Jeff Stelling claims it would be insulting to Jurgen Klopp to suggest that new Liverpool boss Arne Slot can get the best out of Darwin Nunez

One of his first tasks will be tapping into Nunez’s potential and forming him into a world-class striker, something Klopp might have got the former Benfica star on the path to, but will need finishing.

But Nunez will have his work cut out being mentioned in the same breath as Torres, who was one of the most electric strikers in recent memory at Anfield.

El Nino spent four years at Liverpool, where he scored 81 times in 142 appearances in all competitions, while it was his pace and skill that also terrified defenders.

Torres forged an almost telepathic connection with Steven Gerrard, with the two combining more often than not – Gerrard assisted Torres 14 times and Torres assisted Gerrard 10 times.

Slot has proved at Feyenoord he knows how to get the best out of attacking players with his Dutch side famed for their brilliant forward-thinking style, so Nunez’s future might be in the right hands.

Liverpool theory about Nunez and new boss Slot branded ‘disrespectful to Klopp’

Jeff Stelling has branded theories that Arne Slot could be a better managerial fit for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez as ‘insulting.’

Slot was confirmed as new Liverpool boss on Monday, replacing Jurgen Klopp after a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield.

    4

Nunez became the Reds’ record signing in 2022 when Klopp splashed a whopping £85m on the Uruguayan hitman.

Despite showing glimpses of quality, Nunez has struggled to recapture the form that made him one of Europe’s most promising strikers during his time at Benfica.

The 24-year-old has netted 18 times in 54 appearances across all competitions this season but has come under criticism for missing an array of gilt-edged chances.

A report on Tuesday suggested Nunez could find solace with the incoming Slot, due to the Dutchman’s attention to small details.

It was his meticulousness that saw Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez become a huge hit during the pair’s time together at Feyenoord.

Gimenez registered 49 goals in 86 games under Slot and helped fire the Rotterdam club to the Eredivisie title in 2023 and Dutch Cup this season.

But Stelling questioned the notion that Slot would be a better fit for the Uruguayan and labelled it disrespectful to the outgoing Liverpool boss.

“Has Jurgen Klopp got no desire for detail?,” said talkSPORT Breakfast host Stelling. “I think it’s insulting to Klopp. If you just looked on the basis of coaches and who got the best out of players, you’d put Klopp high up and you’d put Slot somewhere below him.

Stelling was quick to shoot down suggestions that Klopp was not as meticulous in his coaching as Slot

“Now that may turn around as the years go on but to say his attention to detail would bring the best out of Darwin Nunez, I think that’s slightly disrespectful to Jurgen Klopp.”

“Slot’s going to come in with big recommendations and rightly so, but getting a player to score 140 goals in 23 games against Go Ahead Eagles, Heerenveen and Heracles, it’s not the same as scoring goals in the Premier League.”

Jurgen Klopp gets Anfield to serenade new manager Arne Slot as Liverpool stars hold back tears in emotional scenes

Rangers legend Ally McCoist lauded Nunez’s all-round game but admits his finishing needs to improve quickly.

“I think it’s a finishing issue with Nunez,” said the former Scotland striker.

“His all-round play is good. It’s a little bit like [Nicolas] Jackson, I don’t think they are the finished article in terms of finishing.

“I think they will both score a fair percentage of goals and both will improve their level of finishing.”

Klopp rubbishes Nunez exit amid Instagram drama but Liverpool star ‘not happy’

Jurgen Klopp has played down talk of Darwin Nunez leaving the club, saying he knows nothing about any speculation of his exit.

The Liverpool star has been the subject of transfer uncertainty this week with suggestions that he may be looking for a way out of Anfield.

    2

While the Reds got back to winning ways on Sunday with a solid 4-2 win over Tottenham, Nunez stole the headlines after removing all Liverpool-related posts from his Instagram.

This came after he missed a huge opportunity to find the net against Spurs, leading to criticism.

The Uruguayan striker was then pictured in the days afterwards with Barcelona star and international teammate Ronaldo Araujo, further fueling speculation that he could be eyeing a move to the Nou Camp.

Liverpool brought Nunez to Anfield almost two years ago for a fee of £85million but he is yet to fully establish himself as an undroppable player under Jurgen Klopp.

In that time the 24-year-old has scored 33 goals for the Reds, including a total of 18 goals and 13 assists this term.

But while speculation will likely continue to link him with a move away this summer, Klopp insists he knows nothing about any links.

Asked about the speculation, Klopp said: “There is what? There is no speculation. It must be external because I don’t know about this.

“There is no speculation right now, it’s just a situation we are in.”

After the drama created by his actions on social media, Klopp added that the striker has to learn how to deal with criticism, admitting it’s part of the job as a modern footballer.

The manager also backed his player, insisting he isn’t doing anything wrong and has just been dogged by bad luck in recent games, having failed to score in six league matches.

Jamie Carragher insists Mo Salah isn’t the only Liverpool star with a questionable future at the club and calls out the likes of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez

“Darwin was definitely not happy missing that chance,” said the Liverpool boss.

“He is unlucky, let me say was, he was unlucky in so many situations where he is doing everything right but the ball still doesn’t go in.

“That’s really tough for a young man. He has big expectations of himself. There is no alternative than going through it, that’s what he’s doing right now. We try to help him with all we can but you have to go through it, everyone has to go through this.

“That’s part of a footballer’s career. All his problem is that he is that good, he is constantly in these moments. If he was less good, he would not have chances. People just say, ‘That’s not great’. Because he is good, he is in these moments.

“How many goals did he score, he is not too bad with numbers right. Eighteen goals. They are not bad numbers! Because of his quality everyone says, ‘Ah, again, again!’. Nobody likes it but it’s part of a career.”

  • Darwin Nunez meets up with Barcelona player amid Camp Nou links

Darwin Nunez meets up with Barcelona player amid Camp Nou links

Darwin Nunez has done little to downplay links of a move to Barcelona after being pictured with Ronald Araujo.

The Liverpool star removed all Reds-related pictures off of his Instagram page after being linked with a move to the Catalan giants.

Speculation around a potential summer move won’t have been helped by Nunez sharing an image on his Instagram story with Barcelona defender Araujo.

But all might not be as it seems.

Nunez and Araujo are friends and international teammates having regularly lined up alongside each other for Uruguay.

While the duo aren’t currently away on international duty with both stars playing for their respective club sides, their friendship means that it’s not unusual for the pair to be spotted together.

As far as a potential move to Barcelona goes, it would certainly be a tricky one to pull off.

Liverpool brought Nunez to Anfield almost two years ago for a fee of £85million and has established himself as a key player under Jurgen Klopp.

In that time the 24-year-old has scored 33 goals for the Reds, including a total of 18 goals and 13 assists this term.

Given his standing in the Liverpool squad, incoming boss Arne Slot is unlikely to want to lose the striker on the cheap, something that could be an issue for cash-strapped Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are currently way over LaLiga’s spending cap, meaning that any move would hinge on a big-money sale of an existing star.

  • Klopp on Liverpool missed chances as Carragher slams ‘unforgivable’ Nunez miss

Klopp on Liverpool missed chances as Carragher slams ‘unforgivable’ Nunez miss

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed their missed chances are their ‘obvious’ problem after their Premier League title hopes took a major hit.

The Reds were beaten 2-0 by Merseyside rivals Everton to leave them three points adrift of league leaders Arsenal with four games to play.

Liverpool had seven shots on target at Goodison Park but it was yet another case of them lacking a clinical edge in front of goal.

This was the same in their 2-2 draw at Manchester United and shock 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace, and Klopp believes that it’s a problem that needs addressing.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the loss against Everton, he said: “I really think we should just try to win football games by playing better, more convincing, using our chances.

“That’s obviously the problem now over the last few weeks, I think that’s obvious. We create, we don’t use them often enough.

“To the end of the season it’s obviously not great because the first thing you need is results, for that you need to score goals, shouldn’t concede, would be helpful as well. Yeah, nothing good to say about this today.”

One huge chance in particular fell to Darwin Nunez, who had a clear shot at goal, but he could only fire his effort straight at Jordan Pickford when he should arguably have found the bottom corner.

The Uruguayan is Liverpool’s second top scorer all season on 18 goals but club legend Jamie Carragher doesn’t think he can produce when it matters.

Speaking on the missed chance, he told Sky Sports: “The chance Nunez misses before half-time, that’s unforgivable at this level.

“These lads [Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge] know a lot more than me about that, but that’s not acceptable at this level, certainly when Liverpool are going for the title.”

Carragher later said there is a ‘real discussion’ with Liverpool’s new manager, who could be Arne Slot amid opened talks, about the future of Mohamed Salah amid his contract expiry next summer.

Alan Pardew questions Jurgen Klopp for ‘strange’ decision to announce his departure from Liverpool half way through the season during a Premier League title race

However, he doesn’t think this is the same when it comes to Nunez: “I think I’m at the stage now with Nunez where I don’t think there is a question to ask.

“I think after two years at the club, and I’ve probably been guilty of this, you want him to do well so much, there’s so much of what you like because he gives everything.

“He runs, he causes trouble, he gets the odd goal, he gets an assist but after two years now and when Liverpool this season are going for the title, in those big games you need your man to score.

“Away at Old Trafford, away at Goodison, in the European game at Atalanta. There’s no time to wait, this is not October, November, this is the business end of the title race.”

Premier League title glory was all that was left for Liverpool following exits in the FA Cup and Europa League, but this now looks a distant possibility.

Only three points separates them and Arsenal but with the Gunners looking strong and Manchester City still able to take top spot, it could be out of reach for the Reds.

Nunez out of Uruguay squad due to ‘discomfort’ suffered in Man United defeat

Darwin Nunez has withdrawn from Uruguay’s squad for the international break due to reported discomfort in his hamstring.

The 24-year-old played the full 120 minutes of Liverpool’s 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final defeat against Manchester United on Sunday.

Nunez has experienced hamstring problems this season and it has been widely reported he has complained of discomfort.

As a result, he spoke to Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa and it has now been decided that he will drop out of their squad.

He will therefore miss friendlies against the Basque County and the Ivory Coast over the coming days.

Nunez, who assisted two goals in the defeat at United, has already played 42 matches across all competitions this season.

The forward has shown immense improvement from his first season at Liverpool as he sits on 17 goals and 14 assists.

He has also featured six times for Uruguay during the campaign but will miss out on their upcoming fixtures in order to rest.

Liverpool will be hoping he makes a swift return to action as they continue to eye a successful end to Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

They sit second and level on points with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and are only behind via goal difference.

The Reds have already won the Carabao Cup and will also be chasing success in the Europa League as they face Atalanta in the quarter-finals.

Nunez has played a key role in their success so far and will be crucial to their chances of lifting more silverware in the coming weeks.

Paddy Pimblett reveals he would rather have Darwin Nunez at Liverpool than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland

Defeat at rivals United will have been a bitter blow for Liverpool as victory would have taken them a step closer to a treble.

However, they could still land three trophies by the end of the campaign, with Klopp set to bid an emotional farewell.
