Pochettino reflects on ‘unsuccessful’ Chelsea spell but makes bold claim

Mauricio Pochettino made an honest reflection of his stint as Chelsea manager as he joined talkSPORT for an exclusive interview.

The Argentine boss admits his season in charge can only be deemed ‘unsuccessful’, but insists he left Chelsea in a better place than he found it in before handing the reins over to Enzo Maresca.

Pochettino signed a two-year deal with the option for a third as he became the second permanent managerial appointment of the Todd Boehly era in May 2023.

The former Spurs boss was tasked with lifting the west London club out of the mire following a dismal 12th place finish and stabilising things behind the scenes after an unsettled season which saw four different coaches in the dugout – Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Bruno Saltor and Frank Lampard.

In many ways, that’s exactly what he did. While after a number of transfer windows of staggering spending a sixth place finish was still a disappointment, it was clear there was a vast improvement on and off the pitch.

The club was back in European football and it appeared Pochettino was building a solid base for his fresh young squad.

However, the manager and club decided to part ways just one season into his two-year agreement and Pochettino’s exit was confirmed just two days after the final game of the campaign.

Pochettino – who has since been appointed head coach of the United States national team – departed Stamford Bridge with a record of 26 wins, 11 draws and 14 defeats in 51 games in the Blues hotseat.

In comparison, Maresca’s record since his arrival as the new Chelsea manager in the summer stands at 25 wins, seven draws and 11 defeats in 43 matches – with the club currently fourth in the Premier League table.

Pochettino recently joined talkSPORT to discuss the build-up to the 2026 World Cup in North America and his ‘dream’ of returning to Tottenham one day.

But he didn’t skip over his time with the Blues and said he was grateful for the opportunity.

“I think it was not a successful period but still a really important period for the club,” he told Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein on Drive.

“In the way that we arrived and moved forward, the project and the team with all the circumstances. When you start to see all the circumstances, I think it was a good season for us. It was a good year.

“I think to change the dynamic and to put the team again in a position to play in Europe and to finish in the top ten after the season before where Chelsea finished 12th.

“I think we managed to change the atmosphere. We changed it to be optimistic and to be positive. You know, the season before things were not so good.

“I think that was good, but for different reasons. In the end we split, but I think things always happen because of the best for both sides.

“But I’m happy with the experience and happy to learn a lot because I think we learned a lot also being in Chelsea.

“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be there. We left the team in a different position than when we arrived.”

  • Arsenal wanted to sign me but Newcastle money was too tempting – I was naive

Arsenal wanted to sign me but Newcastle money was too tempting – I was naive

Kieron Dyer could have been a part of Arsenal’s Invincibles had he not rushed into a decision as a young footballer.

The speedy winger was the talk of English football after progressing through the ranks at Ipswich Town during the late 90s.

    3

After failing to win promotion in the 1998/99 campaign, interest was building in Dyer who told talkSPORT there were other offers on the table when he completed a £6.5million move to Newcastle.

Speaking to Drive, Dyer explained a move away from his boyhood club was inevitable having come so close to the Premier League in a team with highly-rated players.

He said: “We had Richard Wright, myself, James Scowcroft and David Johnson – really good young players so the director’s box was full of scouts and it was always in the paper that we were probably going to be leaving that summer, so it was kind of expected.

“I remember coming back from pre-season and [manager] George Burley pulls me into the office and says, ‘We haven’t received any offers that we want to accept so if you start the season with us you have to get your head down’. I said, ‘Yeah, of course.’

“Then we finished training and someone said ‘the gaffer wants to see you in his office’ and I go there and he says, ‘We’ve just accepted an offer for six and a half million, so you need to go now.’

“I had to drive to Stansted airport and meet my agent before flying to Newcastle.

“But if I’d have been a bit more wise I probably wouldn’t have ended up in Newcastle.

“At the time, Arsenal wanted me with Arsene Wenger, I spoke to David O’Leary and Leeds on the phone, I spoke to Harry Redknapp who was manager of West Ham at the time.”

Signed by Ruud Gullit in 1999, Dyer ended up spending eight years at St James’ Park between 1997 and 2007 where he made 250 appearances for the club.

While clearly enjoying his time in the north east, the midfielder failed to win a single piece of silverware, something that can’t be said for the Gunners in that period.

Dyer made 250 appearances for Newcastle, but failed to win a trophy

Arsenal enjoyed a true period of dominance under Wenger in those years, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and as many Community Shields.

It was also an era that goes down in football history, with Wenger’s side being dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ due to going the entire 2003/2004 Premier League season without losing a game.

While he got to play with record scorer Alan Shearer among others at Newcastle, at Arsenal he could lined up alongside Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires to name a few.

Reflecting on the other interested clubs, he said: “If I’d have known what I know now, I’d have said, ‘I want to wait a bit’ and seen if Arsenal or Leeds would have increased their bid because I had the chance to be a part of the Invincibles squad.”

Laughing at his youthful thinking, he added: “Because you’re so young and naive – plus my agent told me what Newcastle were offering – it was like, ‘Ooff we go’, sort of thing.

“You don’t really know because you have no experience.”

Dyer scored 36 goals for Newcastle in all competitions before leaving in 2007

Dyer had, at times, a strained relationship with Newcastle, but showed plenty of times why the club paid so much money for one of the most talented young players in the country.

He joined West Ham in 2007 and retired from playing in 2013 after short spells at QPR and Middlesbrough in addition to a stint back at Ipswich.

While Arsenal haven’t won a league title since 2004, they are currently competing for the top-flight for a third consecutive season.

Though they look set to miss out once again with leaders Liverpool sit points clear, with Arne Slot’s men also having a game in hand.

As for Newcastle, they are in contention to secure Champions League football for the second time in three years with the Toon sitting in sixth spot – two points off the top four.

Bent outraged as Beckham picked over many legends in Man United Mount Rushmore

Darren Bent was left outraged with Andy Goldstein’s Manchester United Mount Rushmore.

The talkSPORT host listed his four most influential figures at Old Trafford during his lifetime.

Amongst them was former England captain David Beckham, leaving Bent shocked.

Goldstein also included Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and Sir Alex Ferguson during the segment on Drive.

However, it was the inclusion of Beckham, who played for the Red Devils for 11 years, which perplexed Bent.

The former striker could not believe the likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney had been omitted.

Reacting to Goldstein’s quartet, he asked: “So no Scholesy? No Ryan Giggs? ‘It’s Becks.’ That’s not an answer. No, Where’s Paul Scholes?”

As his co-host attempted to justify his decision, Bent continued: “Honestly. ‘He’s Becks’, mate. That’s not an answer. ‘He’s Becks’. Over Wazza [Wayne Rooney].”

He even added: “You’re… honestly. Becks would even put Wazza on there.”

This prompted Goldstein to joke: “Hey, listen. You know I want to get an invite to Becks’ 50th birthday party.”

Bent then concluded: “No, but honestly, come on. No Wazza.

“He is all-time record goal scorer at your club and he’s not on Mount Rushmore.”

Rooney scored 253 goals for the Red Devils to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton as the club’s record goal scorer.

Meanwhile, Beckham was part of the Class of ’92 alongside Giggs, coming through the academy and spending 12 years at Old Trafford.

During that time, he made 391 appearances for the club, scoring 85 goals and providing 121 assists.

The former midfielder also won 14 trophies with United, including the Champions League and six Premier League titles.

Arsenal fan Bent then named his Gunners Mount Rushmore, selecting legendary manager Arsene Wenger, record goalscorer Thierry Henry and the man who previously held the club record, Ian Wright.

Goldstein queried whether legendary captains Patrick Vieira and Tony Adams were overlooked, but it didn’t cause the same ruckus as the pick of Beckham in the Man United Mount Rushmore.

‘Cut-throat’ – Jermaine Jenas reveals the brutal way he was axed by Tottenham

Jermaine Jenas has revealed he found out his time at Tottenham was up after being denied access to the training ground.

Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, recently admitted plenty of the Blues’ bloated squad are not present in first-team training as a number of stars have been left out of their match day squads.

    2

talkSPORT understands former first choice left-back Ben Chilwell has been offered to Manchester United, whilst £50million player Raheem Sterling has been stripped of his squad number and left out of Chelsea’s games so far this season.

Former England international Jenas hosted talkSPORT Drive on Thursday and revealed that he’d been in Chilwell and Sterling’s position himself when playing for Spurs.

He told co-host Jermaine Pennant: “Mine [Spurs departure] was bad like that.

“Spurs had built this brand new training facility and I was there for about six months and I thought, ‘this place is absolutely stunning, it’s beautiful’.

“But what it was, when you walked in through reception – so at this point Andre Villas-Boas had just joined the club. I did the whole pre-season.

“My Achilles weren’t great, I’ll be totally honest. So I wasn’t anywhere near my best but obviously thought I’d be given a bit of time to kind of get myself up to speed and maybe around Christmas time I could fight for my place in the team.”

But unfortunately for Jenas, that’s not how things panned out.

He continued: “I literally walked through the door, and we used to have this turnstile type thing where it had a fingerprint ID, so you put your thumb on it, it would spin through and you’d go in.

“And I put my thumb on it and it just went [error sound]. It just went red! So I went ‘oh, wipe my thumb a bit’, it just went red.

“I looked at the people at reception and they put their heads down, everyone just dived for cover. Nobody even spoke to me or pulled me to say, ‘look this is not going to be happening’ or anything like that.

“It was just cut throat as that. But that’s the way it is, unfortunately, in football it’s a business and that’s what happens!”

Jenas signed for Spurs from Newcastle for a initial fee of £7m in 2006.

In 2011 he went on loan to Aston Villa and then, following Villas-Boas’s arrival in the summer of 2012, he went on loan to former club Nottingham Forest.

Jermaine Jenas jokes he’d be willing to fight Gary Lineker for Match of the Day gig – but not Alan Shearer

He was then sold to QPR in January 2013.

He made 202 appearances for Spurs in total, scoring 26 goals and recording 23 assists.

  • Keown was like a ‘psycho’ who fought for Arsenal – we saved Di Canio from him

Keown was like a ‘psycho’ who fought for Arsenal – we saved Di Canio from him

Martin Keown’s will to win saw him get the best out of teammates and rivals.

The defender was the heartbeat of the Arsenal back line and not many could get the better of him.

    4

One man who saw first hand how competitive Keown could be was former teammate Emmanuel Petit.

Joining Drive on talkSPORT, he was asked who would win in a fight between legendary captain Tony Adams and Keown. “I would probably put a coin on Martin,” he said.

“Why? I always told him that football saved his life – otherwise he would’ve been a criminal.”

Host Andy Goldstein was a little taken aback, but Petit clarified. “Football saved him,” explaining that with rules and referees keeping him in line, his fiery nature wouldn’t get too out of hand.

“He knew that the television was looking at him, fans were looking at him so he had to behave, good manners as well.

“I remember so many things with him – he sometimes reminded me of psychopaths. I told him ‘football saved you otherwise you’d be in trouble in normal life.’

Petit is exagerrating to make his point given so many players change when they cross the white line. “Martin is such a nice guy but all of a sudden, in the space of one second, he can change.”

A confrontation in 1998 with Sheffield Wednesday’s Paolo Di Canio summed him up, Petit recalled. The forward was standing up for his teammate Wim Jonk who was pushed by Patrick Vieira.

Keown intervened but his elbow caught the head of Di Canio, who grabbed the Arsenal defender’s face in retaliation. This was the game in which Di Canio was sent off by referee Paul Alcock and pushed the official to the floor in one of the Premier League’s most infamous moments.

“I remember, we tried to take Martin’s hands and fingers off Paolo Di Canio’s throat.

“He was trying to strangle him and he was almost ready to do it. You could see his eyes, he was not there anymore – he just wanted to kill Paolo Di Canio.”

Petit later added: “The way he played, the way he used to take care of the strikers all the time.

“Me and Patrick in the midfield, we were so happy to have Tony, to have the back four, the English guys, because we could travel everywhere in the world with them and they would fight until they are dead, they die on the pitch.

“Martin, it’s funny because I see Tony was clever enough to understand that. I’m not saying that in a bad way, it’s kind of a joke you know, but I think Tony understood it and he was managing Martin just like someone is walking with his dangerous dog.”

Keown joined Arsenal for a second time in 1993 and formed a rock solid partnership with Adams like the one William Saliba and Gabriel enjoy today.

He won three FA Cup trophies, the Cup Winners Cup as well as being crowned a Premier League champion three times where he was part of the 2004 squad known as the ‘Invincibles’.

Arsenal have not won a league title since the days of Keown, who is now a talkSPORT co-host and is still defending his club except this time Simon Jordan is the man trying to get around him

Andros Townsend worried he’d be forced to retire before sealing surprise Luton move

New Luton Town star Andros Townsend admits he might have had to retire had he not secured his latest transfer.

Townsend has signed a short-term contract until January at Luton after his contract at Everton expired in the summer.

    3

Townsend joins Luton after a tough period in his career

It had been a strenuous search for a new club having just recovered from an ACL injury, which has forced him to miss 18 months of football.

The 32-year-old told talkSPORT that he had offered himself to clubs across the country, Europe and even the Middle East before Luton took a chance on him.

And while he would not retire officially, he also realised that the longer he went without a club, the more difficult it would be to come back.

Speaking to Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent on talkSPORT Drive, Townsend said: “It did come to a point where we are, in October now, I felt like my time might have gone.

“I started doing media work, working with Sky quite regularly and what have you.

“People were saying ‘wait until January, you might get a chance in January’.

“The problem is, if they didn’t want to take a look at me after not playing in 18 months, what is another six months? You are talking two years.

“So I would never officially retire but I feel like my time may have gone but hugely grateful to Rob Edwards and Gary Sweet, the chief executive at Luton.

The 32-year-old will bring much-needed Premier League experience to Kenilworth Road

    3

The 32-year-old will bring much-needed Premier League experience to Kenilworth Road

“First and foremost, for taking the chance and wanting to see me and secondly, for offering me a short-term contract.

“They believe in me and they believe I can help the group, I am so desperate to repay that faith.”

Townsend joins a side in desperate need of an oomph as they struggle with life in the Premier League.

A dream promotion from the Championship did not give their fans any illusions that the top tier would be anything less than unforgiving.

But one win in eight matches has left the Hatters 17th in the table, a position they would almost certainly take at the end of the season if it was offered to them.

With the arrival of Townsend is a player who has played in the Premier League for most of his career, and understands the division.

Luton boss Rob Edwards has some fine young players, most of whom have proved their worth in the Championship.

But the Premier League is a different beast and only Ross Barkley, Marvelous Nakamba, Tim Krul and Albert Sambi Lokonga have any real experience of it – and with varied levels of success.

Salah ‘worth £150m’ but Liverpool warned selling star man would cap off ‘nightmare’ summer

Al Itthad’s mega-money offer for Mohamed Salah could cause chaos in Liverpool’s club offices.

talkSPORT understands that the Saudi Pro League champions have made an offer for the Reds star player, as they want him to spearhead their Club World Cup challenge.

As it stands, Liverpool are unlikely to sell their European record scorer, but as this summer has proved, Saudi sides won’t take no for an answer.

The 31-year-old Egyptian would be made the league’s, and therefore the world’s, highest paid player, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who is on an eye-watering deal at Al Nassr.

But what’s in it for Liverpool? Well that was the cause of much debate, with former England and Premier League striker Darren Bent insisting the forward is worth over £150milliom.

“I think it’s going to be touching £150-200million,” the talkSPORT pundit said on Drivetime.

Salah could get paid more than Ronaldo as Liverpool receive approach from Al Ittihad
Liverpool could turn to Xabi Alonso to solve defensive issue as he lauds transfer target

“They can get that money out of the ashtray and Salah can give you a good five years. £100million is nowhere near enough for him, £150million minimum. Maybe £100million next year with a year left.”

talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook added: “We might see a bid go in for Salah that they know will be rejected.

“They know by making that bid it achieves what they want to achieve, it was the same with Kylian Mbappe.

“There was no way he was going to Saudi Arabia and they knew that, that’s why they could offer £250million knowing it would be turned down.

“But, it got us talking, it got media outlets throughout the world talking and it created publicity and grew the brand.”

Such a deal could be detrimental for Liverpool, though, who have already lost defensive midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this summer, and have so far only replaced them with Wataru Endo from Stuttgart.

Commenting on the Reds’ window, Crook added: “You look at Liverpool’s summer, they lost out on [Moises] Caicedo, they lost out on Romeo Lavia.

“If they were to sell Salah a week before the window closes, that would be a nightmare summer.”

Lampard should leave ‘basket case club’ Chelsea, who are told to hire new manager now

Frank Lampard has been advised to LEAVE Chelsea after just four games in charge for the sake of his managerial career.

The Blues hired him as caretaker after Graham Potter’s sacking earlier this month, but Darren Bent believes Chelsea should hire their next permanent appointment now.

Chelsea’s Champions League exit against Real Madrid means Lampard has lost all four games in his second stint at the club, making him the first Blues manager to do so during the Premier League era.

And although he’s only set to be in charge until the end of the season, talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein believes now is the time for Lampard to resign.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Goldstein said: “There is a chance that Lampard could walk away from this little stint without one win under his belt.

“If he did that, I think that would be the last time any club ever goes to him, ‘Can you manage ours?’ I think Lampard has got to walk away, it’s a basket case of a club.

“I don’t really understand why they brought him in in the first place, I don’t understand what they were trying to get out of it. It was an uphill task beating Real Madrid at the best of times.

“When you’ve got a tactical genius in the dugout, you’ve got a chance in someone like Thomas Tuchel, they for some reason sacked him, brought in [Graham] Potter, sacked him.

Chelsea have endured a disastrous season by their standards

Chelsea have endured a disastrous season by their standards

“Then they brought back a manager they already sacked, I don’t get any of it. I think Lampard should think of himself, not the club, and leave.”

Julien Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique have been linked with the vacant job at Stamford Bridge this summer, but Bent has called for the club to hire their next man now.

Bent said: “Get a new manager in. If you want Nagelsmann, because it looks like Enrique isn’t going to take the job. If you want Nagelsmann, get him in now. Sign him up, yeah here you go, but it starts at the end of the season.

“‘You will be our manager’, let him come in now, even take training, assess the squad, see what players he wants to keep because he might see Conor Gallagher and go, ‘You know what, I can work with that, there’s something in there I like, I want to keep him.’

Nagelsmann could be the next manager to take the helm at Chelsea

    Getty

Nagelsmann could be the next manager to take the helm at Chelsea

“[Ruben] Loftus-Cheek, don’t need him, I’ll get rid of him’. It could be anyone. [Mateo] Kovacic, yeah he’s been a top player but I don’t really think he serves a purpose, move him aside.

“Let him pick out the players he wants to get rid of, give you a list of players he wants in, and then get the ball rolling now rather than be panicking at the end of the season.

“‘Got to get Nagelsmann in, then we’ve got to get the players in, oh no we’ve got to get these players out’, bring him in now!

“They’ve got nothing to play for now. Get a manager in, let him assess the squad, who he wants, who he doesn’t want, and then start the season day one, pre-season, ready to go.”

Chelsea sit 11th in the Premier League and are approaching the end of a dismal season without any silverware.

Daniel Levy told to let Antonio Conte go and replace him with Tim Sherwood at Tottenham

Tim Sherwood can be the man to replace Antonio Conte and give Tottenham a major boost, reckons Teddy Sheringham.

Spurs have gone into the international break with chaos rumbling on behind the scenes following Conte’s stunning rant in his post-match interview following the 3-3 draw with Southampton last weekend.

In these comments, Conte took aim at his players as well as the club’s ownership, leaving his future in serious doubt.

It’s understood that the Italian faces the sack following his comments, leading to question marks over the future direction of the club.

Speaking to Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT Drive, Sheringham said: “What a rant he came out with the other day. I still look at it and people ask me what do you think, but I still don’t know what he means with his rant.

“He talks about the last 20 years of Tottenham, maybe even more than that going back to my time, are you saying that there’s a cancer of the last 30 or 40 years of Tottenham Hotspur?

“I’d have to sit down and ask him what he meant because the only person who has been there for the last 20 years is Daniel Levy.

“The players have changed, the staff have changed and they haven’t won anything, so what are you trying to say? Is it down to the chairman, is he doing the wrong thing?

Sheringham believes that Spurs should let Conte leave

“All I can see from what Daniel Levy has done is that he’s gone out to try and buy the best and get the best managers in. He’s had Jose Mourinho in and he’s a proven winner. He’s had Conte, a proven winner and it hasn’t happened for whatever reason.”

Former manager Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked with the post but Sheringham believes Levy would be well suited going for another former employee of his in Sherwood.

Sheringham added: “I think that the vibe is all wrong at Tottenham. There’s question marks all the time about Conte, is he staying? Is he going?

“He’s only been there two years and it seems to come around every three months about whether he’ll stay or he’ll go. He looks upset and you can’t have that because you need some sort of stability to give you the confidence that you’re there for the long run and you want to make it right.

“I’d let him go now and get yesterday’s guest [Tim Sherwood] in. I would. I think you can do a lot worse than getting Tim Sherwood in.

“He’s a man who knows what he wants as a football manager. He’s had a couple of goes, he’s been sacked and he understands the game. If you listen to him talk you know he knows how football works.

“Football minds, he can see who is cheating, who wants the ball and who doesn’t. Get him in charge and get them in shape.”

Arsenal Women’s star lifts lid on ‘class’ atmosphere and culture shift Arteta has brought

Mikel Arteta has been hailed for bringing an ‘unreal culture shift’ to Arsenal by Gunners Women’s star Jen Beattie.

It’s shaping up to be a memorable season for the men’s side, who find themselves top of the Premier League – and they have a game in hand on second-placed Manchester City, who they have a two-point cushion on.

Things aren’t going as well for the women’s side, with the three-time Women’s Super League champions currently fourth in the table.

But Beattie says the atmosphere at London Colney, the training ground where both Arsenal‘s men’s and women’s sides train, is a very positive one.

Beattie also shed light on the conversation her teammates have with members of the men’s team and hailed Arteta for the work he’s done at the club.

She told Drivetime: “We’re not on the exact training pitch, we’re kind of spread out over the training ground so we’re fully integrated in the sense that we’re at the training ground.

“We all have different schedules, plays on different days, training times are different, but the atmosphere is class at the minute.

“That’s what success brings, the men’s team are doing so well, the kind of culture shift that Mikel Arteta has brought in has been unreal.”

Arteta could guide Arsenal to a first league title since 2004

Beattie added: “I think anyone says it around the training ground that if you’re winning it’s always a good atmosphere, you’re proud to be a part of the club.

“Everyone’s asking about how their games are going and what’s coming up next. The guys are brilliant at that, they’re always coming up and saying hello and ask us how we’re doing.

“I think that’s the kind of culture that has seen a massive shift in the past few years.”
