Spurs win again but squad crisis hits new low after FOURTH red for sickening tackle

Tottenham bolstered their renewed bid for a top-four place in the Premier League as Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski netted in a 2-0 win against struggling Nottingham Forest on Friday.

Richarlison put Ange Postecoglou’s side ahead late in the first half and Kulusevski struck after the break at the City Ground.

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma was sent off for a dangerous tackle with 20 minutes left, but the visitors held on for their second successive victory.

His second red card of the season was Spurs’ fourth in total this campaign, and he’ll now be banned for four games. Meanwhile, Spurs’ injury crisis hit a new low when Brennan Johnson was substituted off with a suspected concussion after a nasty head knock.

The north Londoners are level on points with fourth-placed Manchester City, who host Crystal Palace in their game in hand on Saturday.

After winning for the first time in six league games last weekend when they crushed Newcastle, Tottenham’s confident display offered more evidence they have emerged from their autumn swoon.

In contrast, Forest are winless in their last six games and have managed just one victory in 13 matches as the pressure mounts on boss Steve Cooper.

Forest sit five points above the relegation zone, but that gap could dwindle depending on the results of their fellow strugglers this weekend.

Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson was constantly jeered on his first return to Forest since his close-season transfer.

Johnson’s miscued cross drew an especially sarcastic cheer from the Forest fans before he nearly silenced his tormentors with a poked effort that drew a good save from Matt Turner.

The Wales international’s evening ended in pain after 32 minutes as he was forced off with blood pouring from a head wound, a worrying sight that finally prompted a sympathetic round of applause from the stands.

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min was subjected to some crunching tackles as Forest tried to rattle him, but the South Korean was unfazed, whipping in a cross that Pedro Porro headed wide.

Tottenham were dominating possession and they finished with a flourish in first-half stoppage time.

Kulusevski’s inswinging cross picked out Richarlison and, cleverly drifting away from his marker, the Brazilian rose to head home from five yards.

It was Richarlison’s third goal in his last two games after he had gone nearly three months without scoring.

Willy Boly squandered a golden opportunity to equaliser early in the second half when the unmarked Forest defender fired over from close-range.

That was a the signal for a period of sustained Forest pressure, with Guglielmo Vicario sprawling to repel Gibbs-White’s drive.

Forest thought they had equalised when Anthony Elanga slotted home in the 58th minute, but the goal was disallowed by VAR for off-side against the former Manchester United forward.

Reinvigorated by that escape, Tottenham doubled their lead in the 65th minute thanks to Turner’s catastrophe.

The Forest keeper’s weak clearance only reached Kulusevski and he danced into the area before drilling a powerful shot that beat Turner’s limp attempted save at the near post.

Bissouma saw red in the 70th minute, dismissed for a high tackle on Ryan Yates after Australian referee Jarred Gillett was advised to consult the pitchside monitor.

Postecoglou said of the latest red card: “It’s been a little bit of an issue. It’s a fine line with those things.”

He added: “We’ve had to deal with that a few times this year. You can’t go on doing that because eventually you’ll pay a price for it, and we did against Chelsea. It’s something we talk about constantly but it’s a fine line between their commitment to what we’re trying to do and not overstepping the mark.

“We lose [Bissouma, until after AFCON], we lose Udogie, I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be that kind of season for us. We’re not going to get a smooth run at anything. But that’s alright, it’s building resilience in the group.

“We’ve got plenty of reasons to make excuses, we haven’t. We’ve gone through a rough trot, we’ve still got some tough games coming up. I think when you get through these periods and you’re steadfast in what you’re trying to do you come out stronger, provided you maintain belief.”

Forest pressed in vain in the closing stages, with Neco Williams’ deflected effort flashing just wide for a corner that forced Vicario to make a superb save from Harry Toffolo’s header.

A youthful Liverpool side lost 2-1 at Union Saint-Gilloise in their final Europa League group game on Thursday, while Villarreal snatched a place in the last 16 from Rennes with a dramatic victory in France.

Elsewhere Kemar Roofe’s winner sent Rangers into the Europa League last 16 with a 3-2 victory at Real Betis on Thursday, while Joao Pedro’s late strike helped Brighton sink Marseille.

Brighton avoided a Europa League knock-out round play-off in February with a tense 1-0 home win over Marseille in Group B.

Both teams had already secured top-two finishes, but the Seagulls needed a win to usurp OM at the top of the standings.

The Premier League side struggled to break down their visitors for long periods, but Pedro showed neat footwork in the box before drilling the ball into the top corner in the 88th minute to score his sixth goal in as many Europa League matches this season, their first in Europe.

“I lost my voice, I lost everything. It was an amazing game. We played amazing football,” said Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

West Ham made it a clean sweep for British teams, finishing top of their group as Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez scored in a 2-0 win over Freiburg, who finished second in Group A.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp rang the changes with his team already secure as Group E winners and with an eye on the weekend’s Premier League game against rivals Manchester United, starting six players aged 20 or younger.

Saint-Gilloise, who needed a victory to keep alive their hopes of pipping Toulouse to second place, took the lead through Mohamed Amoura before Jarell Quansah hit back for Liverpool.

Cameron Puertas restored the hosts’ advantage two minutes before halftime with a low strike which beat Caoimhin Kelleher at his near post.

Klopp threw on Joe Gomez, Ryan Gravenberch and Darwin Nunez in the second half, but Saint-Gilloise held on for a famous win, although the Belgians dropped into the Europa Conference League playoff round after Toulouse beat LASK Linz 2-1 in the group’s other game to finish second.

Rangers, runners-up in the competition two seasons ago, were heading out of the tournament and into the Europa Conference League with the game level 12 minutes from time and Sparta Prague on their way to a 3-1 victory at Aris.

But after a corner was twice not cleared, Roofe bundled the ball home from three yards out to fire Rangers from third to first in Group C.

The Scottish giants had twice led in the first half through Abdallah Sima and Cyriel Dessers, but Juan Miranda and Ayoze Perez both equalised for Betis.

Rangers held on in a frantic finale to inflict a first home defeat of the season on Betis, who had to settle for a Conference League play-off spot.

“(Playing in Europe) is special, it’s always been special during my time here,” Roofe told TNT Sports.

Dani Parejo scored a late winner as Villarreal took top spot in Group F and direct qualification for the last 16 with a 3-2 victory at Rennes.

Lorenz Assignon hammered home in the 12th minute of injury time to seemingly send Rennes back to the group summit, but his goal was ruled out by VAR and scuffles broke out after the final whistle.

The Ligue 1 club only needed to avoid defeat to finish first, but instead will have to face a team dropping out of the Champions League in the playoff.

Qarabag finished second in Group H courtesy of a 2-1 success against Haecken. They were a distant eight points adrift of group winners Bayer Leverkusen, though, as the Bundesliga leaders extended their unbeaten start to the season to 23 matches in all competitions by thrashing Molde 5-1.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma had to settle for a knockout playoff berth despite beating Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 as Slavia Prague thrashed Servette 4-0.

In the Conference League, Premier League high-flyers Aston Villa qualified for the last 16 as Nicolo Zaniolo netted his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw at Bosnian club Zrinjski.

The Red Devils and their counterparts from Andalucia played out an entertaining game at a lively Benito Villamarin stadium, with home fans believing for a while they could mount a comeback, despite their three-goal deficit.

Joaquin hit the post for Betis and Juanmi spurned two clear chances for the hosts as they started well.

However Rashford’s brilliant goal early in the second half quelled that idea and United saw the game out comfortably as Betis’ energy levels dipped.

Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag handed 21-year-old winger Facundo Pellistri his first start for the club in sun-washed Seville, after some bright cameos from the bench.

The Uruguayan youngster was instantly involved on a bright display, overcooking a cross from the right as United looked to put the game out of Betis’s reach straight away.

Spurs close to axing coach as players beg ex-boss to make shock return; Ange in the hunt

Antonio Conte’s reign as Tottenham manager appears to be rapidly drawing to a close after the club’s limp Champions League exit at the hands of AC Milan.

The Italian was back on the touchline on Wednesday after recovering from gallbladder surgery but upbeat pre-game talk about infusing his players with energy came to nothing.

The club’s long-suffering fans are now coming to terms with a 15th straight season without a trophy following the 0-0 draw in the last 16 of the Champions League, which meant Milan progressed 1-0 on aggregate.

The result capped a disastrous seven days for Spurs, who exited the FA Cup last week away to second-tier Sheffield United and lost at Wolves on Saturday.

Those results, along with Conte’s health problems, have led to mounting speculation that the Italian’s tenure is coming to an end.

Sky Sports also reported that several players and staff members have reached out to former coach Mauricio Pochettino begging him to return to the club that sacked him in November 2019. Sky Sports News reporter Melissa Reddy said: “Also, a lot of players and staff have been speaking to the Argentine urging him to return and resurrect the club.”

Pochettino has been out of a job since being axed by Paris Saint-Germain last July, and has said in the past that he would love to return to Spurs. He said in April 2020: “But deep in my heart I am sure our paths will cross again. From the day I left the club, my dream is to be back one day and to try to finish the work we didn’t finish. We were so close to winning the Premier League and Champions League.”

Australian manager Ange Postecoglou is reportedly on the list of managers Spurs will consider hiring to replace Conte. Other options include Brighton & Hove Albion coach Roberto de Zerbi, former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel, recently-sacked Spain coach Luis Enrique, and Marco Silva.

53-year-old Conte, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, was cagey over his immediate future after the Milan defeat but admitted the club could sack him.

“This is not the right day to speak about the future but I have a contract with Tottenham and Tottenham know very well my thoughts and at the end of the season we will meet and make a decision,” Conte said.

“I have a great relationship with my chairman (Daniel Levy), with Fabio Paratici (director of football), but it doesn’t mean I don’t tell them which is my vision, you understand? Then we will see.

“Now we have to finish the season. I have a contract until June. I am happy to work in Tottenham but at the end will make a decision.”

Conte walked through the door at Spurs in November 2021 as a serial winner at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan.

But his pragmatic approach has been criticised by fans who are not prepared to compromise on the club’s attacking traditions.

Conte has indicated unhappiness at Tottenham’s transfer dealings, while repeatedly making it clear he believes it is unrealistic to expect his side to compete with their big-spending Premier League rivals.

Tottenham’s Spanish defender Pedro Porro at the end of the Champions League defeat to AC Milan.Source: AFP

The Italian has often talked of the need to build the foundations of the club and again appealed for patience from supporters on Wednesday.

“I understand for the fans, they don’t have patience because for a long time Tottenham is not winning but what I can promise is we continue to work really hard for this club to continue to improve and then we see what will happen,” he said.

As well as a frustrating time on the pitch, Conte has faced an emotionally challenging few months off it.

His friend and Spurs fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone died in October and he lost his former Juventus teammate Gianluca Vialli earlier this year – the third close friend to pass away in recent months.

That was followed weeks later by his own bout of poor health. Conte had to have his gallbladder removed and subsequently missed five matches across two spells of recovery.

Spurs still have a place in next season’s Champions League to play for but that looks fraught with difficulties.

They are fourth in the Premier League but a rejuvenated Liverpool are just three points behind them with a game in hand.

Do Spurs stick with Conte in the hope he will haul them over the line or do they sack him and hope a new manager can revitalise their push for the top four?

Club bosses have a huge call to make and time is not on their side.

Manchester United bounced back from a historic thrashing by Liverpool to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, while a lucky 2-2 draw away to Sporting Lisbon gave Arsenal work to do to reach the quarter-finals.

But it was two of United’s most fiercely criticised stars in recent days who made the difference after the break.

Antony curled a brilliant shot into the top corner before Bruno Fernandes, who Ten Hag named again as captain, headed in Luke Shaw’s corner.

Wout Weghorst then netted just his second goal in 15 appearances for United by pouncing from close range six minutes from time.

Premier League leaders Arsenal were forced to come from behind to salvage a draw in the Portuguese capital.

Despite going for a first league title in 19 years, Mikel Arteta named a relatively strong side and William Saliba headed the visitors into the lead.

Sporting equalised shortly after in near identical fashion, with Goncalo Inacio heading home Marcus Edwards’ corner.

Former Tottenham midfielder Edwards then had a role in Sporting’s second as Paulinho reacted quickest to finish inside the area.

Arsenal were level just after the hour mark, though, when Granit Xhaka’s cross deflected off the unfortunate Hidemasa Morita and rebounded into his own net.

A lengthy VAR check followed, but the goal was confirmed despite what appeared to be a clear foul by Saka in the build-up.

“Considering you concede two goals away from home and still escape with a draw you have to take some positives,” said Arsenal boss Arteta.

“But we gave them too much hope by giving the ball away in our own half too many times.”

Juventus will take a narrow lead to Germany next week after the in-form Angel di Maria scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Freiburg.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma are also on course for the last eight after goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Marash Kumbulla saw off Real Sociedad 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Six-time winners Sevilla may be fighting a relegation battle in La Liga, but are always a threat in the Europa League and will take a 2-0 first leg lead over Fenerbahce to Istanbul next week thanks to goals from Joan Jordan and Erik Lamela.

The game of the night saw Bundesliga surprise package Union Berlin snatch a 3-3 draw against Union Saint-Gilloise despite having trailed three times.

Bayer Leverkusen beat Ferencvaros 2-0 at home, while Shakhtar Donetsk and Feyenoord played out a 1-1 draw.

In the UEFA Conference League, Michael Antonio hit two first half goals to earn West Ham a 2-0 win at AEK Larnaca.

Villarreal were held 1-1 away at Anderlecht, while Nice and Fiorentina took 1-0 leads over Sheriff Tiraspol and Sivasspor respectively.
