The billion-dollar battle for football supremacy is on as 17-year reign set to end: Man Utd State of Play

The clock is ticking on Friday evening’s (UK time) soft deadline for interested parties to submit official bids for Manchester United, as the tumultuous reign of the Glazer family nears its end.

There have been several reports as to who is in the race for the English powerhouse as the prospective new owners look to return United to the top of the Premier League once more.

Foxsports.com.au breaks down all of the key questions surrounding the United sale in what promises to be a deal of seismic proportions set to send shockwaves through the sporting world.

    WHY ARE THE GLAZERS SELLING?

The Glazer family bought Manchester United for the fee of $AUD1.3 billion in 2005 and have owned it ever since.

But in November last year, the Glazer family revealed it was “commencing a process to explore strategic alternatives for the club” which included “new investments into the club, a sale, or other transactions”.

For a large portion of United fans, the Glazer family revealing their intentions to sell came as welcome news given the vociferous protests over the years against their ownership.

However, it’s almost certain the Glazer’s are not selling the club to appease supporters.

Rather, it’s about making as much money back as possible.

Given the increased financial might of their Premier League competitors, especially that of Manchester City and newly-minted Newcastle United, more money than ever will need to be spent to compete.

That’s not something the Glazer family seem terribly keen on doing and having saddled the Red Devils with monstrous debts during the 2005 takeover, they are craving a major profit from their initial investment.

There’s also the element of Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, also looking to sell or gain investment from outside parties, so the Glazer family also would not want to lose potential investors or new owners to an English rival.

HOW MUCH ARE THE GLAZER’S SELLING FOR?

The $4.9b sale of Chelsea to Todd Boehly last year set a benchmark as to what the going rate would be for a big English club, but it appears the Glazer family want a substantial amount more.

According to The Telegraph, the Glazer family is seeking a staggering $8.7 billion for the club, but that figure could become lower in the official bidding process.

It is also worth noting the Glazer family has instructed the Raine Group to oversee the sale of the club as Chelsea appointed the same company to conduct their sale process.

Should the Glazer family sell United for their desired price, it would eclipse the world record of a sports team sale which is held by the Denver Broncos, who were sold for $6.6 billion last year.

    WHO ARE THE INTERESTED PARTIES?

As it stands, there is only one party to publicly declare their interest in purchasing Manchester United: British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe is the CEO of INEOS chemicals group and has a reported net worth of approximately $22 billion, per Forbes.

The 70-year-old already owns two football teams — Ligue 1 side Nice and Swiss outfit Lausanne-Sport — and was heavily linked with taking over Chelsea before Boehly eventually bought the London outfit in 2022.

Ratcliffe was named Britain’s richest man in 2019 and is the only countryman linked with a bid to take over United.

Although Ratcliffe is the sole figure to make a public declaration, several reports have stated parties from Qatar and Saudi Arabia are heavily interested in making a play for the Red Devils.

Qatar already owns Paris Saint-Germain through Qatar Sports Investments which makes any purchase a little bit tricky, but more on that later.

As for Saudi Arabia, The Telegraph reports a number of groups based in Riyadh have made “formal inquiries” into the sale.

However, the same report claims any bid for United is unlikely to come from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund which completed a takeover of Newcastle United in 2021.

HOW COULD QATAR OWN MAN UTD AND PSG?

According to UEFA regulations, “no individual or legal entity may have control or influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition.”

That creates a massive hurdle should Qatar make a play for United through QSI, given they already own PSG.

PSG have qualified for the Champions League in every season since the 2012/13 campaign, while United have qualified for a European competition every season since 2015.

So, barring an absolutely catastrophic season from either team, UEFA’s roadblock is going to create some headaches.

However, a unique case passed by UEFA in 2017 would give QSI hope of owning PSG and United and allow them to compete in European competitions.

Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig and Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg are both owned by the energy drink group and have enjoyed tremendous domestic success since being bought by the company.

However, given the two teams play in different leagues and have different management setups, they were granted permission to play in the 2017/18 edition of the Champions League.

A statement by UEFA revealed “no individual or legal entity had anymore a decisive influence over more than one club participating in a UEFA club competition” but insisted both teams would still have to make “several important governance and structural changes” in regards to financing, personnel and sponsorship arrangements.

It doesn’t mean UEFA would take the same stance should QSI purchase United, but at least there is a precedent set.

QSI chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi could soon be president of both PSG and Manchester United. (Photo by FRANCK FIFE / AFP)Source: AFP

    COULD THE GLAZERS STAY ON?

Whisper it quietly, but there is a chance the Glazer family don’t complete a full sale of their controlling stake.

According to ESPN, the Glazer family are looking more in favour of bringing on a partner investor as opposed to an outright sale.

The additional investment would reportedly be used to help upgrade Old Trafford and the Red Devils’ Carrington training ground.

News of the Glazer family sticking around in Manchester would certainly not be welcomed by a majority of fans given their vocal protests over the years.

    WHEN COULD A SALE HAPPEN?

Although a soft deadline to formally declare interest is almost here, no sale is likely to be concluded until the end of April, according to reports.

Should a sale be ratified around that time, it would give the new owner a full summer transfer window to make their mark on the playing squad should a full takeover be sanctioned.

ICC explains why Aussies were ‘stripped’ of No. 1 ranking

Already feeling the pain of a first Test humiliation, Australia’s woes were compounded when the ICC appeared to promote India to No. 1 in the Test rankings. FOLLOW LIVE

Australia remain the world’s top-ranked Test team, the International Cricket Council said, as it apologised for briefly and “erroneously” listing India as number one.

India demolished Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur, and on Wednesday the ICC showed the hosts as taking over at the top of the Test rankings.

The ICC subsequently clarified that Australia were in fact still number one in Tests. India top the Twenty20 and one-day rankings.

“The ICC acknowledges, for a short period of time on February 15, 2023 that, due to a technical error, India were erroneously displayed as the No. 1 Test team on the ICC website,” it said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The second Test starts on Friday and India will have history on their side at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium — previously Feroz Shah Kotla — where they haven’t lost a Test since 1987.

But coach Rahul Dravid said they will not get carried away by records and will focus on the coming five days of action.

“We don’t look at previous history and go back in time,” Dravid told reporters. “We cannot get carried away by that. Australia are an experienced team and have good players who know they want to come back.” India hammered Pat Cummins’ Australia inside three days during the first match to move closer to securing their berth in June’s World Test Championship final at The Oval in London.

They need to win the series 3-1 or 3-0 to make the final.

Returning batsman Shreyas Iyer has joined the squad for the second Test after a back injury made him miss the opener.

Dravid said a completely fit Iyer will walk into the XI.

“We will assess it and tomorrow as well, when he comes in for a light hit and see how he feels,” said Dravid.

“But certainly if he is ready to take the load of a five-day Test match, then without doubt, with his performances in the past, he will walk straight into the side.” Skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front in Nagpur with his 120 in India’s 400, followed by key knocks from left-handed all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

“Ability to put pressure back on bowlers made the difference and that’s what Rohit did,” Dravid said.

“That’s what Axar and Jadeja did very well during that partnership. It is not the only way you can play but in these conditions, being able to put pressure back is important.”

Man Utd star scores AGAIN in seven-minute blitz but Red Devils held by Euro giants

Barcelona and Manchester United shared a gripping 2-2 draw at Camp Nou on Thursday as the two European heavyweights traded blows in an intense Europa League play-off first leg.

Marcos Alonso sent Barcelona in front with a header but the superb Marcus Rashford drilled home to level for the visitors and helped force a Jules Kounde own goal which gave United the lead.

Raphinha’s cross flew in to pull Barcelona level and they might won the game when Andreas Christensen hit the post late on, while the hosts also wanted a penalty after Fred appeared to handle in the box.

Xavi Hernandez and Erik ten Hag’s sides are two of the most in-form teams in Europe and delivered a remarkable spectacle.

Having twice clashed in Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011, this Europa League duel offered an enthralling test of each team’s recent improvements.

Xavi surprisingly dropped Christensen and Alejandro Balde for Alonso and Jordi Alba, starting with Ronald Araujo at right back.

United deployed in-form Rashford up front, with Wout Weghorst playing in a withdrawn role as an atypical No 10.

$261m City duo land huge Premier League title blow as Gunners exposed by horror blunders

The visitors were without a host of players including Christian Eriksen, Antony and the suspended Lisandro Martinez, while Barcelona were missing injured duo Ousmane Dembele and Sergio Busquets.

David de Gea parried a Robert Lewandowski drive early on as Barcelona started the stronger, with Alonso curling over a free-kick and Pedri volleying off-target.

The Red Devils soon improved, with Frenkie de Jong deflecting a Jadon Sancho effort narrowly wide of his own goal.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, in sparkling form this season, made a superb save from Weghorst when through on goal and then denied Rashford.

At the other end De Gea saved from Alba as he burst into the area, before Barcelona lost midfield maestro Pedri to a thigh injury before the break.

Raphinha lashed a spectacular effort inches wide before setting up Alonso from a corner, with the Spaniard heading Barcelona in front after 50 minutes.

The defender escaped the attentions of Fred at the far post and celebrated by raising a finger to the sky in a tribute to his father, a former Barcelona player, who died last week.

However Rashford pulled United back level with a sharp near post finish past Ter Stegen after breezing past Alonso just two minutes later.

United took the lead before the hour mark when Rashford drove into the box and his cross was flicked on, with Kounde inadvertently shouldering the ball into his own net.

    This time Barcelona battled back.

Raphinha, playing well in the absence of Dembele, curled a vicious cross into the area which flew past Lewandowski and into the far corner to level.

Christensen hit the post and De Gea made a fine save to foil Ansu Fati late on as Barcelona took control in the final stages but could not find a winner.

Xavi warned in his press conference that the game would not be won or lost in the first leg, and it is perfectly poised for the second leg at Old Trafford next week.

  • Matildas overcome slow start to beat Czechia in Cup of Nations thrashing

Matildas overcome slow start to beat Czechia in Cup of Nations thrashing

The Matildas responded to an “amazing” speech from Sam Kerr to awake from a first-half slumber and thrash Czechia 4-0 in Gosford on Thursday night.

The Europeans were the better of the teams in the opening 45 minutes, with the Matildas starting their Cup of Nations campaign on a sleepy and at times disorganised manner on the Central Coast.

However, following a stirring half-time address from star Chelsea striker Kerr, the Matildas showed greater intent and energy in the second half, and were rewarded with four goals in a positive sign ahead of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Two goals came from Manchester City winger Hayley Raso, while Kerr and record-breaking defender Clare Polkinghorne also got on the scoresheet.

Polkinghorne’s 84th-minute goal was a fitting way to end the game, with the veteran defender captaining the side on the night she grabbed sole possession of the record for most Matildas appearances with 152.

The 34-year-old Queenslander was also rock solid in defence against a Czechia side that troubled the Matildas in the first-half before being outclassed by the hosts for the remainder of the contest,

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson was pleased with his side’s second-half response, and paid credit to Kerr for lifting her teammates.

“Her half-time talk was amazing,” Gustavsson told Network 10.

“Her leadership is phenomenal. She’s been around in important games and can replicate what it can be like.

“Be patient, believe, be positive, energised but we need to play faster, we need to better … it’s that balance of support and demand. It’s great leadership.”

Earlier, Kerr had claims for a penalty waved away in the 18th minute when she was outmuscled by veteran Czechia defender Petra Bertholdová.

The Matildas then wasted a potential chance seven minutes later with a poorly placed pass from Raso.

Czechia then took control, and had three chances in the space of six minutes.

On each occasion, Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold was forced into saves.

The West Ham custodian tipped a long-distance effort from defender Anna Dlaskova around the post in the 26th minute.

Arnold was then grateful for a poor finish from Jitka Chlastákova in the 29th minute.

Chlastákova, who plays for the Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League women’s competition, should have scored but directed her weak shot straight into the grateful arms of Arnold.

Sloppy play from the Matildas then led to a chance for Michaela Khyrova in the 32nd minute, but Arnold again came to Australia’s rescue with smart save at her near post.

That proved to be the end of Czechia’s highlights, with Raso giving the Matildas the lead three minutes after half-time via a shot that deflected off Dlaskova and hit the inside of the post before rolling into the back of the net.

Raso doubled Australia’s lead in the 56th minute with a close-range header.

Kerr’s 62nd goal made it 3-0 in the 71st minute, with Polkinghorne providing the icing on the cake 13 minutes later.

In Thursday’s early Cup of Nations match, Spain beat Jamaica 3-0.

Chelsea has spent €611.49m ($A946.83m) on transfers since their ownership takeover this season (per Transfermarkt), but the Blues’ dire run continued in a 1-0 Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash.

  • Bold plan to repel overseas T20 poaching threat

Bold plan to repel overseas T20 poaching threat

Australian cricket is planning a bold response to the poaching threat posed by overseas white ball leagues, writes DANIEL CHERNY.

Cricket Australia is considering raising the number of central contracts it offers annually in a move that could help stave off the threat of players departing for overseas white ball leagues.

More than a decade after slashing its male national contracts from 25 to as few as 17, CA is mindful that the cricket landscape has changed dramatically in recent years and that the current system in which CA offers anywhere between 17 and 20 contracts on its annual list may no longer be fit for purpose.

Cricket sources confirmed that an increase in central contracts was being discussed as part of talks between CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association over a new memorandum of understanding.

Under the current MOU, CA offers a minimum of 17 and maximum of 20 men’s contracts, with the three discretionary spots tending to be filled when the team has been performing well. In 2020-21 CA awarded 20 deals, dropping back to 17 the following year after a Test series loss to India in 2021, before rising back to the full 20 last year after Ashes and Twenty20 World Cup triumphs.

However, there is a sense from some senior cricket officials that even 20 guaranteed national contracts per year may not be enough to deal with a three-format calendar, particularly as selectors mull whether to pick a considerably different-looking T20 squad ahead of next year’s World Cup in the West Indies and US.

As it stands there is little scope for fringe white-ball specialists like Nathan Ellis and Josh Philippe to receive guaranteed national deals, but lifting the number of contracts would allow greater flexibility to keep those players under CA control at a time when T20 leagues are sprouting regularly around the world.

Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis have all played in overseas T20 competitions in recent weeks, with Tasmanian captain Wade missing from the Tigers’ squad at the moment due to his involvement in the Pakistan Super League, only three months since he captained Australia for a game at the World Cup.

It’s understood the issue of players seeking to play in overseas T20 leagues as opposed to in Australian domestic cricket remains a source of tension at state level.

Players who miss national contracts can still be selected for Australia and can be upgraded to full national contracts if they reach a 12-point threshold under a system in which five points are awarded for a Test appearance, two for a one-day international and one for a T20 international.

The potential upsurge in national deals has left state associations in greater limbo over their own recontracting, with sources indicating that an increase in national deals could correspond with a decrease in state contracts.

CA used to offer 25 central male contracts before cuts which followed the Argus review of 2011.

EPL LIVE: Gunners face Man City in table-topping clash but Haaland in doubt

Manchester City travel to league leaders Arsenal for a massive top-of-the-table clash on Thursday morning (6.30am AEDT).

City may have the threat of being stripped of league titles hanging over them, but Pep Guardiola’s men are back in the race to win a fifth Premier League crown in seven years on the pitch.

Victory will lift them to the top of the table on goal difference, overtaking a high-flying Gunners side that started the season in brilliant fashion before their lead was slowly clawed back.

“Of course, an important one, everyone knows it, we know it and we have to try to perform well,” said Guardiola on the massive clash.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be motivated by the injustice suffered at the hands of the referees in a controversial 1-1 draw with Brentford on the weekend.

Arsenal received an apology from the body in charge of referees after Brentford’s goal was wrongly awarded because of a failure to properly check for off-side by the VAR official.

“That certainly has made our players, staff and fans even stronger and with more desire to pass this hurdle that they put on us,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta at his pre-match press conference.

“We ended the game after analysing all the images that we had with a huge anger and disappointment because that wasn’t a human error. It is the first time in the Messi-Neymar-Mbappe era that PSG has sustained such a winless run.

Mbappe provided a bright spark for PSG when he was substituted on in the second-half.

He twice scored goals that were ruled out for offside, and was a clear boost for the side despite not being fully fit.

Mbappe had been out of action with a thigh injury, which was meant to keep him on the sidelines for three weeks but he featured strongly against Bayern after only two.

Meanwhile, Messi was frustrated on the night, while Neymar was also kept quiet in front of goals.

Neymar did still grab attention, however, after a theatrical dive on the edge of the penalty area during the first half when Benjamin Pavard’s elbow made minor contact with his chin.

The Brazilian went down and clutched his face, forcing play to be stopped due to a potential head injury.

When it was clear that he was exaggerating, the commentator said: “On occasion he lets himself down with his behaviou.

“It’s difficult to sympathise with him.”

In the night’s other match, AC Milan beat Tottenham 1-0 at the San Siro.

Brahim Diaz bundled the ball into the net in just the seventh minute and Spurs couldn’t find an equaliser.

‘This is a disaster’: 25yo goalkeeper saves penalty then drops dead

Belgian goalkeeper Arne Espeel died after he collapsed on the pitch on Saturday moments after saving a penalty for his team. He was 25.

According to reports in Belgian media, Espeel saved the spot kick but dropped to the ground afterwards.

Emergency services rushed to help Espeel and tried to revive him with a defibrillator, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was taken to a hospital. A cause of death is not yet known.

“This is a disaster and a shock to everyone,” Winkel sporting director Patrick Rotsaert said, according to Nieuwsblad.

“Arne had been with the club all his life and was very loved. He was a wonderfully sympathetic boy, always in a good mood and ready to help. This is really a heavy blow. First of all for his family and also our whole club.”

“The ball was still in play. Our goalkeeper got up as fast as possible to receive the ball, but then he fell,” assistant coach Stefaan Dewerchin said, via the Daily Mail.

“It was really terrible to watch. All the players showered together after the incident. When the message came that our goalkeeper was dead, it was an unusually heavy blow. I think some players still don’t realise exactly what happened.”

An autopsy was scheduled to have taken place on Monday to determine the cause of Espeel’s death.

“Winkel Sport is in very deep mourning by the sudden death of Arne Espeel,” the club said in a statement.

“We wish family and friends of Arne our heartfelt condolences in this heavy loss. Football is an afterthought.”

PL ref stood down over ‘unacceptable’ error amid Arsenal boss’ ‘huge anger’

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his side will be fuelled by anger when they face Manchester City in a clash between the Premier League’s top two on Wednesday.

The Gunners lead over City at the top of the table was cut to three points at the weekend after a controversial 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Arsenal received an apology from the body in charge of referees after Brentford’s goal was wrongly awarded because of a failure to properly check for offside by the VAR official.

“That certainly has made our players, staff and fans even stronger and with more desire to pass this hurdle that they put on us,” said Arteta at his pre-match press conference.

“We ended the game after analysing all the images that we had with a huge anger and disappointment because that wasn’t a human error. That was a big not conceiving and understanding your job and that’s not acceptable. It cost Arsenal two points and that’s not going to be restored.”

The VAR for that match, Lee Mason, has since been stood down from VAR duty this weekend.

Arteta was part of the City coaching staff as Pep Guardiola’s assistant when they won back-to-back titles in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

City have won two more Premier League crowns in the past two seasons and Arteta said they remain the benchmark for his side.

Arsenal have a game in hand on their title rivals, but have not won a league title in 19 years.

“What they have done in the last six years, they absolutely merit it,” added Arteta.

“The way they play, the way they have competed, the way they have gone through difficulties. For us the challenge is to get to that level.”
