Kerr-ching! Super Sam scores FOUR in Chelsea rout as epic all-Aussie final awaits

Matildas captain Sam Kerr put on a one-woman show to send Chelsea to the English League Cup final, scoring four times as she prepares to head home to lead Australia in the Cup of Nations.

Kerr was unstoppable in a 7-0 demolition of hapless West Ham, scoring her sixth hat-trick for Chelsea, all in the first half, then adding a fourth for good measure.

It took her season haul to 20 goals for Chelsea across all competitions, the most of any player.

The result also sets up a Cup final clash against Arsenal and Matildas teammates Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley on March 5.

Kerr opened her account in just the third minute with a tidy first-time finish from a perfectly-timed ball from Chelsea teammate Guro Reiten.

The Aussie’s second of the game was perhaps the sweetest strike of the lot.

A Chelsea teammate won the ball high up the field as the Hammers were defensively all over the place.

Kerr, who was positioned perfectly to receive the ball from the resulting tackle, spun around and brought the ball on to her right peg before unleashing an unstoppable strike in the 22nd minute.

She then completed her hat-trick after showing her unrivalled anticipation skills to latch onto a through ball before coolly slotting home to score Chelsea’s fourth of the game.

Kerr then made it four goals for herself in the 60th minute.

It bodes well for the Matildas who will take on Spain, Jamaica and the Czech Republic in the Cup of Nations from next Thursday, with games in Gosford, Sydney and Newcastle.

The series is key preparation for the FIFA World Cup being held in Australia in June and July.

Qatari ruler reportedly interested in owning PL giant as deadline to make official bid looms

Manchester United have reportedly opened talks with Qatari investors as speculation intensifies over the future ownership of the Premier League giants ahead of a deadline for bids.

The American Glazer family, who completed their takeover of the 20-times English champions in 2005, announced in November that they were open to a sale or investment.

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos company officially joined the race to buy the club last month — the only bidder to publicly declare an interest so far.

Potential buyers are understood to have until February 17 to table offers.

The Daily Mail said a group of private investors from Qatar want to buy United and talks have taken place with the club’s hierarchy, confident that theirs would be the strongest bid.

The Guardian reported that Qatar’s ruler, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, was interested in buying United, just weeks after the energy-rich Gulf state hosted the World Cup.

But the emir bought French champions Paris Saint-Germain in 2011 through Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) — meaning a full buyout of United would not be permitted under current UEFA regulations.

Britain’s Press Association said QSI was considering the purchase of a minority stake in United or another Premier League club.

The organisation is a subsidiary of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, which has assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

The chief executive of the QIA, Mansoor Al-Mahmoud, told Bloomberg last month: “Sovereign wealth funds are becoming investors in some of the clubs and you will not be surprised if we invest in this (area) but again we go into a very fundamental process and making sure if we invest this is very commercially driven for our future generations.” Amnesty International said Qatari interest in United should act as a “wake-up call” to the Premier League over its ownership rules.

“Coming in the wake of the World Cup and strenuous efforts from the Qatari government to fashion a glitzy new image for the country, it seems highly likely that any Qatari bid for Manchester United would be a continuation of this state-backed sportswashing project,” said Peter Frankental, Amnesty UK’s economic affairs director.

He added: “We’re not necessarily opposed to the involvement of state-linked overseas financial consortia in English football, but the Premier League must urgently strengthen ownership rules to ensure they’re human rights-compliant and not an opportunity for more sportswashing.”

The unpopular Glazers saddled United with huge debts and further angered fans by backing the failed European Super League project in 2021.

The club have not won the Premier League since 2013 and have failed to win any silverware since 2017.

United are third in the Premier League this season after an improvement in form under manager Erik ten Hag, who took over before the start of the current campaign.

‘Speechless’: Aussie selectors torched for Head snub

Two Australian Test greats have put the blowtorch on Australian selectors for the stunning axing of Travis Head in Nagpur.

Australia’s much-anticipated tour of India will get underway with a daunting Test at the spin-friendly Nagpur.

After days of focus on the wicket, the action will take centre stage as Australia tries to prevail on one of the toughest tours in international cricket.

Can Pat Cummins’ team strike the first blow?

Follow live below with News Corp cricket writer Ben Horne.

3.47pm WAUGH BEMUSED OVER HEAD SELECTION SNUB

Test legends Steve Waugh and Matthew Hayden have become the first high profile Australian greats to question the shock axing of Travis Head for the first Test in India.

Hayden said he was speechless that arguably Australia’s best batsman of the summer would be dumped for Peter Handscomb as a horses for courses bombshell.

Speaking on commentary broadcast on Fox Cricket, Hayden suggested Head was himself in disbelief.

“I can’t believe it. Mark Waugh actually was right next to him, and nor could Travis Head in that brief conversation,” Hayden said on Fox.

“For me he was player of the summer. Totally different conditions I know in Brisbane at the Gabba but his 90 in Brisbane was just so damn good. He made it like it was flat and it wasn’t. It was an absolute raging green top.

“But his mindset and his ability to be able to score quickly … I’m just speechless.”

Waugh was willing to give selectors the benefit of the doubt until after the innings, but questioned whether George Bailey and Andrew McDonald have “overanalysed” the decision to drop Head.

“Hard to believe we can drop the number 4 ranked test batsman in the world and probably our best batsman in the last 12 months plus he bowls better than average off spin – let’s wait and see- maybe the Aussie selectors are genius’s! #gamble #overanalysing? #waitandsee,” posted Waugh to social media.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have launched a gutsy rescue mission after the early losses of Usman Khawaja and David Warner.

    3.19PM WARNER GONE

Australia is in early disarray with David Warner following fellow opener Usman Khawaja back into the sheds after some superb Indian swing bowling.

After the stunning axing of Travis Head, Australia find themselves 2-6 and with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith needing to perform a rescue mission in Nagpur if the visitors are going to overcome the early drama.

Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket that Warner left too big a gap between his pad and bat and was too far back on the crease as Mohammad Shami took his off-stump in just the third over of the Test.

It followed Khawaja falling to a tight DRS review which India asked for just one second before the timer expired.

Commentators felt live that the ball to Khawaja was only clipping his leg-stump but replays sent him on his way.

Australia were worried about too many left-handers in their line-up and two of them are already gone.

    3.08PM KHAWAJA GONE

Usman Khawaja is out and Australia is 1-2 after a perfectly-timed DRS from India. He goes lbw to Siraj. And here’s a look at the area which had Australia spooked.

3PM FANS REACT TO HEAD STUNNER

    Tim Michell

Cricket fans and journalists have been left stunned by Australia’s decision to back Matthew Renshaw and Peter Handscomb over Travis Head in the first Test.

While Head’s record outside Australia is poor, he was arguably Australia’s best-performed batsman in home series against South Africa and West Indies.

It was expected a selection shootout between Handscomb and Renshaw would decide the No.6 batting spot, with the Victorian skipper firming due to a pitch set to terrorise left-handers.

But it was instead Head who was left out when the teams were unveiled on Thursday.

Zac Standish tweeted: “How you can justify dropping Travis Head is honestly ridiculous. Even if he isn’t the best player of spin he has the runs on the board to be given a chance. About as ridiculous a selection call as I can remember.”

Tristan Lavalette added: “Surely Travis Head had to be backed in for the first Test. Massive call – not just for this match and series but his standing moving forward. Hard to remember a more brutal axing for an Australian player.”

SA-based journalist Corey Norris summed up the mood in Adelaide, tweeting: “That’s a terrible decision. Needed to give him a chance to prove he’s worked on his technique against spin,” while Xavier Ellis said: “WTF… one of the few I love watching.”

News Corp’s Daniel Cherny described the bombshell as “the boldest horses for courses selection decision Australia has made in decades, possibly ever.”

2,35PM HEAD DUMPED IN SELECTION SHOCK

Selectors have dropped a selection bombshell by axing arguably Australia’s best batsman of the summer Travis Head for the first Test in India.

Australia has won what could be a crucial toss on a treacherous wicket and will bat first in Nagpur.

In a conditions based selection, right-hander Peter Handscomb has been thrust in to play his first Test since 2019 to combat the allegedly doctored pitch in Nagpur designed to thwart Australia’s left-hand heavy batting line-up.

However the major shock which will leave Aussie fans stunned is that it is Head and not Matthew Renshaw who is making way for Handscomb.

Head struggled in the sub-continent last year against Pakistan and Sri Lanka but was determined to reinvent himself on this trip by adopting an ultra-aggressive style.

Even though it’s a conditions based decision to get spin-adept Renshaw and Handscomb into the team, it’s still a bitter pill for Head to swallow given he has been Australia’s best batsman at home for the last two summers.

His ability to take a game away from an opposition in a session makes him a unique commodity.

But Australia still don’t feel his spin skills are good enough for such extreme conditions and he has been relegated to 12th man.

As pointed to first by News Corp, Todd Murphy makes his Test debut as Nathan Lyon’s spin partner.

2:25pm SKY THE LIMIT FOR INDIA

India has handed a stunning Test debut to T20 phenomenon, Suryakumar “SKY” Yadav as the hosts throw down the gauntlet to Australia in Nagpur.

Yadav has forged a reputation as a six-hitting freak in the white ball formats, but 79 first-class matches he finally gets to pull a Test shirt on for India, aged 32.

SKY will attack from the outset and will put the pressure on Australia to play with an aggressive mindset in the first Test in Nagpur.

Todd Murphy has received his baggy green as confirmation the Victorian off-spinner will be making his Test debut for Australia.

Teams will be confirmed at the toss shortly.

    EARLIER REPORTS

India’s targeted doctoring of the Nagpur wicket has David Warner seriously considering batting right-handed at times in today’s first Test match and seen selectors call Todd Murphy up to the team to make his debut for Australia after just a handful of games for his state.

Murphy, is going to make his Test debut after one of the more remarkable rises from obscurity in Australian bowling history.

The 22-year-old will be presented his baggy green after just five games for Victoria.

Warner is understood to be considering batting right handed to counter India’s pitch doctoring designed to foil Australia’s long list of left handed batsmen.

He has been practicing right-handed at times in the nets and told teammates he would do the same but it remains to be seen if he is bold enough to do it in a Test.

There is a patch outside the left-hander’s off stump that appears to have been doctored to create more turn.

Australia’s top order is dominated by left handers while India’s has none,

Warner batted an entire season in junior cricket right handed and sustained the same performances across the season.

Joe Root batted left handed for two deliveries in a Test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi in December to counter the spin.

Sunil Gavaskar did similar in a Ranji Trophy semi-final in 1982 to counter the left arm spinner and swapped to a more orthodox approach for the right armrest.

Murphy’s rise from obscurity to the Test team has come at extraordinary speed.

Even Shane Warne had played seven before his debut in 1991.

An phenomenal talent who impresses all who see him, he made his Australia A debut after two games.

Murphy had a long meeting with coaches and Nathan Lyon on the eve of the match, New Zealand legend and spin bowling coach Daniel Vettori is on hand to guide him in his preparation.

Vettori made his debut after just two first class games.

Both players began life as medium pacers. Vettori was convinced to give up seam bowling by his college head master and was just 18 when the new skill gave him entrée to the national team.

Murphy was bowling medium pace at a rep trial in Shepparton when a chance encounter with former Victorian spinner Craig Howard changed the course of his life.

Howard, who was there to watch his son and had no involvement with the squad, saw the aspiring batsman sending down some off spin.

Murphy was bowling slow because he’d grown tired of his stock medium pace deliveries.

Howard mentioned to the coaches that he thought the teen was the best off-spinner they had and changed the course of his life.

Murphy moved to Bendigo to play for Sandhurst where he was coached by Howard who lives in the Victorian city.

Australia’s decision to go with two off-spinners is extraordinary but Ashton Agar has struggled with his rhythm since arriving in India.

The last time an Australian side played two off-spinners was in 1988 when Peter Taylor and Tim May teamed up across the border from India in Karachi.

‘BULL****’: LEGEND SLAMS PITCH DOCTOR TALK

Outspoken former India head coach Ravi Shastri has claimed talk around Nagpur’s suspect pitch is a case of sour grapes.

Claims of a ‘pitch fix’ has dominated the first Test narrative following evidence of local ground staff deliberately trying to doctor the wicket in India’s favour.

Shastri, however, dropped the tried and true method of deflecting criticism of a pitch.

“That’s bulls–t,” Shastri told SEN Sporstday.

“It’s more hype than anything else surrounding this first Test match.

“It always happens, you get 15mm grass, 18mm grass or 12mm grass in different places around the ground … at the end of this first Test, I’m sure there’ll be someone who scores a hundred.

“If someone can get a hundred or 80+ on that pitch, they’ve played well and he will go and say, ‘What’s wrong with the pitch? You stay there, you apply yourself, your shot selection is good, you get runs’.

“But if you go out there and think you’re going to smash every ball, good luck to you.”

Good luck indeed if you are one of Australia’s many left-handed bats. The two sections of the pitch seemingly left unattended by the Nagpur curator are the roughs outside the left-handers off stump. Maybe Australia should have had its warm-up matches on the Lake Eyre basin …

INDIAN TOUR CRYSTAL BALL: WHO WINS, WHO STARS, WHO TO FEAR?

Australia are attempting to win their first series in India in almost 20 years and while Pat Cummins and his men might be the current world No.1 rated Test team, there is no more daunting task in cricket than trying to win on Indian soil.

News Corp’s leading cricket writers take a look at the upcoming series with some bold and fearless predictions about what Australia simply must do if they’re to create history over the next month and become the first Aussie team to win a series in India since 2004.

    BEN HORNE

    Who wins the series:

India 2-1. These teams are evenly matched but the conditions are extreme – and made even more extreme by allegations of Indian pitch doctoring.

    Star of the series:

Steve Smith. Appears in golden form and usually when Smith is in that kind of mood it transcends formats and conditions. One of the best batsmen against spin in the world.

The selection gamble Australia must make:

Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green to come straight back for the second Test. Australia needs its big guns and the pairing changes the entire complexion of the Aussie line-up.

The Indian player Australia should fear most:

Ravindra Jadeja. Freak of a player who dominated the 2017 series and with bat and ball could prove the point of difference in this series.

What will be the biggest challenge for Pat Cummins this tour?

Getting through the physical and mental workload of playing every Test with little fast bowling support. Australia can’t afford to burn Cummins’ out before the Ashes.

    ROBERT CRADDOCK

    Who wins the series:

India 2-1. Australia are off balance with three key injuries. I sense they will improve in whatever they do in the first Test but India are just so hard at home.

    Star of the series:

Ravi Jadeja may be short on recent form but his darting spin is so difficult to play. If Scott Boland gets a start he will surprise people.

The selection gamble Australia must make:

Alex Carey to No 6 and play five bowlers while Cam Green is out. It is a big gamble but an essential one. C’mon Australia. Be bold.

The Indian player Australia should fear most:

Spinner Axar Patel has a Test bowling average over 11 runs per wicket for his short career. Not a man to be underestimated.

What will be the biggest challenge for Pat Cummins this tour?

Staying cool and calm. It’s the only way Australia can beat India. Once the Indians get fired up they take the crowd with them it all becomes too much.

    PETER LALOR

    Who wins the series:

History says India will win but I’ve got a nagging feeling the Australians can almost do it. Almost. India 2-1. Hope I’m wrong.

    Star of the series:

Virat Kohli or Steve Smith. Both former captains. Both on the rise again. Runs are hard and valuable because of that. Wickets will be easier and Axar Patel will take lots.

The selection gamble Australia must make:

Todd Murphy. Todd Murphy. And Todd Murphy.

The Indian player Australia should fear most:

Axar Patel has been bowling brilliantly. He was magnificent against England.

What will be the biggest challenge for Pat Cummins this tour?

Pat Cummins’ biggest challenge will be getting through the first Test without Cam Green. If he gets them through unscathed look out.

Man Utd claw draw after first-minute disaster as England gun bags 20th goal

Jadon Sancho’s first goal since September denied managerless Leeds a famous win at Old Trafford as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

Sancho has been sidelined for much of the season by fitness issues, but came off the bench to rescue a point and stretch United’s unbeaten run at home to 16 games.

Leeds sacked Jesse Marsch on Monday following a run of seven league games without a win.

Caretaker manager Michael Skubala had just one 20-minute training session to prepare for the trip across The Pennines, but they had been on course for a first victory over United since 2010.

Leeds shock Man Utd in 55 seconds | 00:45

Wilfried Gnonto gave the visitors the perfect start after just a minute and Raphael Varane’s own goal doubled their advantage early in the second half.

Marcus Rashford’s 20th goal of the season sparked the United fightback before Sancho equalised.

A point leaves third-placed United still seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal, having played two games more.

The draw is more valuable to Leeds, who edge one point clear of the relegation zone.

Gnonto has been a consistent bright spark of an otherwise sad season for Leeds and exploded the game into life after just 60 seconds as he found the bottom corner for his fourth goal in seven games.

United badly missed the presence of the suspended Casemiro in midfield, which allowed Leeds to counter-attack at will.

Pascal Struijk could have doubled their lead inside 12 minutes as David De Gea was forced into a save from point-blank range to deny the Dutch defender.

But the losses of Luis Sinisterra to injury and Struijk due to concussion halted Leeds’ momentum and they ended up clinging onto their lead before halftime.

Alejandro Garnacho fired just wide and then saw a shot cleared off the line by Max Woeber after the Argentine had rounded Illan Meslier.

However, United were slow out of the blocks after the break and were punished. Gnonto was at the heart of the move again as he released Crysencio Summerville down the left and his cross was turned into his own net by Raphael Varane.

Erik ten Hag turned to his bench for solutions and found them in Sancho and Facundo Pellistri to replace the ineffectual Wout Weghorst and Garnacho.

Weghorst’s withdrawal put Rashford through the middle and within minutes he rose highest to meet Diogo Dalot’s cross for his 12th goal in 14 games since the World Cup.

Leeds were inches away from restoring their two-goal lead almost immediately when Brenden Aaronson’s free-kick came back off the post.

But their advantage was soon wiped out completely 20 minutes from time. Sancho’s return to action has been a timely boost with United still involved in four competitions and short on attacking options.

The England international collected Luke Shaw’s deflected cross and his low strike caught out Meslier low to his left.

United then laid siege to the Leeds goal in search of a winner. Meslier redeemed himself with a fine save to tip over a Varane header and Bruno Fernandes twice fired off target as United failed to complete the comeback.

  • How Galle helped ready Head for spin role in India

How Galle helped ready Head for spin role in India

Travis Head is ready to play a key role with the ball for Australia in India. LACHLAN McKIRDY unpacks how the batter has developed his off-spin bowling in the past eight months.

An unexpected Galle haul and New Zealand great Dan Vettori’s mentorship has set the platform for Travis Head to take his bowling to another level.

Head has delivered more overs in the past seven Tests than his 20 matches before that, showcasing a handy ability to find a wicket out of nowhere.

It is a timely boost to Australia’s bowling depth ahead of a taxing series in India.

During the final Test of the home summer, Ricky Ponting stated in commentary that he felt part-time spinners Head and Marnus Labuschagne looked more dangerous with the ball than the returning Ashton Agar.

Head’s evolution as an off-spinner picked up a notch when he snared 4-10 against Sri Lanka last June. The South Australian has since been given more opportunities to bowl, relishing the responsibility and dedicating more time to his craft.

“That propelled me to getting more of a bowl,” Head says of the innings in Galle.

“I have worked on it. Having Dan Vettori with us has definitely helped that. He’s someone I get along with and work with really well. And I think I’ve slightly got a bit better at it.”

It’s built confidence that Head’s bowling is Test standard, although he knows his role in India will depend on the pitches presented.

“[On the] first two or three days, I’m not probably going to have much impact,” he says. “But when the rough is there, you can throw it in there and you don’t have to do too much.

“The way it comes out of my hand has always been like that. I’ve always enjoyed bowling like that on day three or four to right-handers.

“It gives Gaz (Nathan Lyon) a good chop out. I’m not here for a long time, just there for a good time.”

Pat Cummins conceded last month that it could be an option to play one frontline spinner in India, noting Head is “a slightly different off-spin bowler” to Nathan Lyon.

“A bit flatter which could be really helpful over there,” Cummins said at the SCG.

“[I’ve] been really happy with how he’s bowled, probably under bowled him even this game. So he’ll be a big part for us over there.”

A side-by-side comparison of Head and Lyon’s bowling shows the difference in their off-spin technique.

Rather than the overspin that the GOAT prefers – often generating sharper bounce – Head focuses on sidespin. When targeting the rough, that can yield either vicious turn or slide straight on.

“I don’t know which one is going to do what,” Head says.

“I’m trying to get over the top of it a little bit more to get some drop on it.

“When I get in a good position, I can get it to drift and drop with that side spin … throw it into the rough. One will spin and one won’t.”

Head believes that variation will help him complement Lyon while having an important impact in India, particularly to right-handed batters.

“Gaz is so good and consistent,” Head says.

“Because Gaz is so good at his stock ball, it becomes repetitive and batters can get in a rhythm. Then in the Ashes in 2019, you see him get one or two wickets and there might be long partnerships but all of a sudden you can take four in a couple of overs because it’s so hard to start against him.

“If that means I can come in for a couple of overs, change the angles. If I do get a breakthrough then great, he can get back into his work. We complement each other well.”

Spin bowling in India is no easy task. Lyon and Steve O’Keefe bowled 345 overs combined across Australia’s four Tests in 2017.

It’s a far cry from Head’s 28 overs in Tests since the first match in Galle. While he’s not set to bowl an excessive amount of overs, Head has experience to draw on.

“I played as the No.1 spinner for South Australia for a period of time, rightly or wrongly,” he says.

“But I’ve bowled a lot of overs in periods.

“If I’m needed to bowl more, I can bowl more.”

By the end of the tour, Head still wants the focus to be on his batting.

After another summer where he was able to dominate with bat in hand, tours of India and England this year are set to be his greatest challenge

Head is hopeful of replicating his feats in conditions that he hasn’t yet been able to master.

“The natural way for me is to always put [bowlers] under pressure,” he says.

“I was really happy with how I played Simon Harmer (in Sydney), that’s a nice intro to Ashwin. It’s a different beast in his conditions.

“You have to go in there with expectations of wanting to play well…but I feel like I’ve got the game to do it.

“Hopefully I can make the most of it, I feel like I’m in a good space.”

  • Miracle as former Premier League star rescued from Turkey earthquake rubble

Miracle as former Premier League star rescued from Turkey earthquake rubble

Former Chelsea star Christian Atsu has been found alive and rescued from the rubble of the Turkey earthquake after his voice was reportedly heard.

The 31-year-old Ghana ace is believed to have been on the ninth floor of an apartment block when two earthquakes rocked Turkey on early on Monday.

Atsu, who has three kids with wife Marie-Claire, plays for Hatayspor, who he joined last summer.

The earthquake hit hard in Kahramanmaras, where Hatayspor are based.

Video showed rescuers with search lights sifting through the wreckage of his apartment block during the night, The Sun reports.

According to local media reports, Atsu’s voice was heard in the rubble, along with that of Hatayspor’s Sporting Director Taner Savut.

Hatayspor spokesman Mustafa Ozat reportedly said: “Christian Atsu was taken out with injuries.

“Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.”

Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashitey-Odunton, said she’s received information from the country’s football authorities that Atsu “has been found”.

Several of his teammates were dramatically rescued from their homes after the earthquake struck at 4am local time.

Just hours before the quake struck Atsu scored deep into stoppage time on Saturday to secure a 1-0 win over Kasimpasa.

“Important win for the team. Happy to be on the scoresheet,” he tweeted.

Footage showed Atsu being mobbed by his teammates as ecstatic fans celebrated the win, along with messages praying for him to be found.

Newcastle and Chelsea were earlier anxiously awaiting news of their former player.

While Chelsea tweeted: “We’re praying for you, Christian Atsu.”

Atsu joined Chelsea from Porto for £3.5million in 2013 but didn’t make a single appearance for the Premier League giants.

Atsu took in loans at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle.

And the Magpies made his deal permanent in 2017 after Atsu played a key role in their promotion from the Championship.

Up to 10,000 are feared dead, including many children, after two “once-in-a-century” earthquakes rocked Turkey and Syria today.

A massive 7.8 magnitude shock – one of the biggest for 100 years – was followed hours later by another huge 7.5 magnitude quake.

Frantic survivors used their bare hands to dig through the rubble of flattened homes and were filmed pulling children to safety amid scenes of utter destruction. The twin earthquakes also sparked tsunami alerts on Mediterranean coasts in Greece, Cyprus and Italy, and shaking was felt as far away as Egypt and Iran.

Multiple hats not a worry for Mitch

One of Tasmania’s best young cricketers is continuing to produce runs at premier league level with life just as busy off the field. See his story.

Ask Mitch Owen if caps have become a big part of his life and the answer would probably be yes.

From the caps he makes as a business owner with Cord Boys to the multiple ones he metaphorically wears as New Town captain, Tasmanian Tigers contracted all-rounder and Hobart Hurricanes young gun.

It’s a busy life for the 21-year-old but it’s one that is producing strong results on and off the pitch.

Owen currently sits second on the runs table in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) with 796 runs while his business alongside Bucks teammates Jack and Tyler Willmott continues to grow off the field.

“I’m really confident when I go out for New Town,” Owen told The Mercury.

“I feel there is a little bit of pressure on my shoulders but I think I strive with that, at least this year. I really want to be successful for every team I play for and that starts with New Town. I’m trying to make sure my performances reflect that.”

While a modest Owen gave most of the credit to his business partner brothers, he said taking the plunge into a profession away from the pitch was only beneficial to his work on it.

“We started the business 18 months ago and we make and design custom corduroy hats. We have slowly been branching Australia wide and have seen a few hats internationally which is nice. We have had a flat out few months which has been good. It’s really exciting and gives me another thing to focus on outside of cricket,” he said.

“Cricket takes up probably seventy per cent and Cord Boys the other thirty. I make sure it comes second to cricket but still take it seriously.”

The all-rounder was even busier over the summer, playing four games for the Hobart Hurricanes in his third season in purple.

“I think each year in the Big Bash with the Hurricanes you get to experience different people coming in weather that be international players or new coaches. It’s invaluable really to keep learning off those sorts of people that have had that experience over the world,” Owen said.

“I probably would have liked to play a few more games and then played better in the games that I did play but in terms of the long term I’m really excited for what’s to come and hopefully cement a role in the team and be successful.”

Sporting success is definitely something that runs in the Owen family with younger brother Cameron drafted to AFL club Sydney late last year.

“He is loving life in Sydney. He was home for the Christmas break but since then it’s been pretty full-on and eye opening for him,” Owen said.

“It was a big move for an 18-year-old to make so we more chat around the mental side of things and how he is handling the expectations of professional sport.

“I actually got emotional when he was drafted. I didn’t expect that but I was super proud of him.”

While he is hoping to lead the Bucks to back-to-back premierships and earn a call-up with Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield side before the end of the cricket season, Owen will spend the first part of his break in Ireland in late April before returning home to juggle his ever-growing business and cricket ventures back home.

‘A million miles off’: Why Klopp is ‘bereft of ideas’ amid ‘shambolic’ Liverpool implosion — UK View

This time last year, Liverpool were dominating just about every opponent they faced in the Premier League as they scored goals for fun and proved to be a brick wall at the back.

Fast forward to today and Jurgen Klopp’s side are unrecognisable in the worst ways possible.

Liverpool are rock bottom of the Premier League this calendar year, with one draw and four defeats.

In fact, the Reds’ seven defeats this season is half the amount of losses over the previous three seasons combined.

Not only that, but their defensive record has sunk to an embarrassing 30-year low.

28 goals conceded is the most Liverpool have shipped in their first 20 games of the season since the 1992/93 campaign.

As the storm rages around Anfield, Klopp remains stuck in the eye of it in his baseball cap and jacket wondering how on earth he can mastermind a revival.

But, as many pundits and reporters in England have noted, the chances of injecting some much-needed CPR into the Reds’ campaign are slimming with each game.

‘May have picked wrong club’: Goalscoring freak’s horror game sparks wild claim amid Kane’s record feat

It took just 12 minutes for Liverpool to find themselves up against the wall at Molineux on the weekend, as Wolves raced out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of an own goal from Joel Matip as well as a debut goal for new signing Craig Dawson.

Although Klopp’s side threatened early in the second half, those hopes were quashed when Wolves skipper Ruben Neves scored his side’s third of the day, even if the German boss bizarrely refused to acknowledge it.

But one of the biggest takeaways from the Reds’ performance was the nightmare display from the centre-back pairing of Matip and Joe Gomez which, in turn, highlighted the vital importance of star defender Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher aired his take on Matip and Gomez’s showing on Twitter and didn’t hold back.

“It’s not too difficult to play centre back next to the leader of the back four, judge CB’s when they have to lead themselves,” Carragher wrote.

    “Shambolic.”

What makes Carragher’s statement all the more damning is Liverpool’s record with and without van Dijk in the side.

When the Dutch colossus is on the park, Liverpool have won 105 from 146 games for a 71 per cent win rate.

Without van Dijk, the Reds have won 23 from 43 games (53 per cent).

It wasn’t just the “shambolic” display from Matip and Gomez that had another legend of the game irate.

Rather, it was the significant lack of application from the entire team — a hallmark of Klopp’s Liverpool — that had former Premier League winner Alan Shearer up in arms.

“You can moan about a lack of investment, absolutely,” Shearer told Match of the Day.

“You can moan about players being physically and mentally tired, because of what happened last season.

“But, that today, wasn’t acceptable, in that first half. As I said earlier, they should have been four or five nil down because of their lack of effort.

“And when the players get home tonight and look in the mirror and say, ‘Have I given enough?’, there’s not one of them that can say that today about that performance.”

With such a horrendous drop-off in form this season, questions have inevitably been asked of the mastermind behind Liverpool’s transformation since he moved to Anfield in 2015.

Klopp has provided bucketloads of charm and charisma throughout his seven-and-a-half-year tenure with the Reds and has delivered several trophies throughout, including a coveted Premier League title in the 2019/20 season.

But, as The Telegraph’s Sam Wallace wrote, the German is a long way from the character we have come to know.

Wallace described Klopp as “someone bereft of ideas, of explanation, of resolve” during a spicy post-match press conference in which he took aim at a reporter for a valid question about Liverpool’s mentality going into games.

Arsenal great Paul Merson shared Wallace’s view but also sympathised with Klopp as the German had a front-row view of the catastrophe unfolding in front of his very eyes.

“The first time I’ve seen Klopp just sitting there,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“I don’t like the word lost, he’s not lost. But I don’t think he knows what else to do now.

“He’s watching this team and it is a million, million miles off of where they were last year. A million miles off.”

Klopp has cut an increasingly frustrated figure this season. (Photo by Clive Mason/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

With all of the talk about Klopp cutting a forlorn figure in the dugout, perhaps it gives some validation to the seven-year syndrome claim several have made about the boss.

In his previous two managerial gigs, things began to unravel for Klopp in his seventh full season at Bundesliga clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp failed to guide Mainz back to the Bundesliga having been relegated the season before while at Dortmund, the club was in the relegation zone at Christmas but eventually finished seventh.

Now, in his seventh full season at Anfield, the wheels have well and truly come off the Liverpool wagon as the club are firmly on track for their worst season under Klopp’s watch.

Although the Wolves faithful cheekily chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” in Klopp’s direction during the 3-0 loss, it’s extremely unlikely Klopp is given his marching orders any time soon.

And with 18 Premier League fixtures left on the board, there’s every chance the 55-year-old can turn things around.

But given the catastrophic downturn in fortunes this season, a significant portion of the irreversible damage has been done.

‘This is unprecedented’: Man City ‘could be expelled from Premier League’ over financial breaches

Premier League powerhouse Manchester City has been charged with over 100 breaches of financial regulations as a four-year investigation finally reveals its findings.

In a statement the PL said City had been found to have broken rules across nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018.

It is alleged the club breached the rules around player and manager contracts and the remuneration declared in their financial accounts.

Since the Abu Dhabi-based ownership group took over in 2008 City has won six championships. The club was also charged with failing to co-operate with the investigation since the 2018-19 season.

The Times reported “if the charges are proved it could lead to a range of sanctions including a points deduction or even expulsion from the league”.

The reigning PL champions currently sit second on the table, five points behind leaders Arsenal, and a deduction would arguably give the London-based club one hand on the title.

City was previously banned by UEFA for two years and fined 30 million Euros for alleged financial fair play breaches relating to sponsorship payments, but the ban was overturned and the fine cut to a third by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Investigations were launched into the club after German outlet Der Spiegel published documents from Football Leaks which alleged City had overstated sponsorship income with the club’s owners paying instead of Abu Dhabi-linked sponsors, used a secret contract with an Abu Dhabi club to double former manager Roberto Mancini’s wages, and broken rules over approaching young players.

‘Needs to stop playing so well!’: Celtic star’s cheeky Mooy jab as ‘unbelievable’ Aussie scores again

Aaron Mooy’s rich vein of form for Celtic continued with a man of the match display as the Aussie star scored in Celtic’s 4-1 rout of St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership.

A beautifully-lofted pass from Hoops star Jota found Mooy who had slipped in behind a napping St Johnstone backline.

The 33-year-old took a touch to control his teammate’s pass before lobbing it over St Johnstone goalkeeper Remi Matthews’ head and into the back of the net for Celtic’s third goal inside 40 minutes.

Mooy’s goal was his fourth in seven Scottish Premiership appearances and his sixth in eight across all competitions.

Although he didn’t find himself on the scoresheet, Riley McGree also turned in an eye-catching performance in Middlesbrough’s 3-0 win over Blackpool in the Championship.

McGree provided the assist for Chuba Akpom’s second goal of the game for Boro thanks to some terrific give-and-go work from the Socceroo.

McGree dials up nutmeg for ripping goal | 01:00

Teesside Live’s Middlesbrough reporter Craig Johns gave McGree a rating of eight out of 10.

“Another brilliant, all-action display,” Johns wrote.

“He just seemed to cover every blade of grass in the final third of the pitch. Wherever the ball was, he was.”

The Northern Echo’s Dominic Shaw also rated McGree’s performance the same, stating “Blackpool couldn’t get a grip of his movement.”

As McGree dazzled in the second tier in England, fellow Socceroo Harry Souttar made his Premier League debut for Leicester City away to Aston Villa.

It was a nightmare start for Souttar who gave Villa the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to an own goal as he turned in Ollie Watkins’ cross into the back of the net.

Thankfully his teammates were able to spare his blushes as they roared back to secure a crucial three points in a 4-2 win over Villa.

While Souttar scored at the wrong end of the field, one member of the Australian contingent at 2. Bundesliga side St Pauli found the back of the net with a stunner in a 2-0 win against Hannover 96.

On just his third start since joining St Pauli, Connor Metcalfe got his second goal for the club as he curled in a delightful effort with his left foot just inside the right edge of the box.

Although he was initially flagged for offside, the goal was eventually awarded as fellow Socceroo Jackson Irvine raced over to celebrate Metcalfe’s strike.

Elsewhere, Socceroos skipper Mat Ryan made a massive save as AZ Alkmaar drew 1-1 with FC Volendam in the Eredivisie.

There was little Ryan could do to keep out the opener, but he came up big in the 66th minute.

The Aussie had to produce a smart stop to prevent a 20-yard thunderbolt from flying past him and it came at a crucial moment to keep the score at 1-0, as AZ would score a late equaliser.

Ryan’s side sit in second place in the Dutch top flight, just two points off league-leaders Feyenoord.
