IPL 2025: Eden Gardens pitch invader shares Virat Kohli’s reaction after emotional hug during KKR vs RCB clash

The IPL 2025 opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens witnessed an unusual and emotional moment when an 18-year-old fan, Rhituparno Pakhira, breached security to meet his idol, Virat Kohli. The incident, which briefly disrupted the match, has sparked conversations about fan devotion and security measures at sporting events.

The fan’s bold move to meet Virat Kohli

On March 22, during the 13th over of RCB’s innings, Pakhira scaled the fencing near the ‘G’ Block of Eden Gardens and ran onto the pitch. This occurred shortly after Kohli had scored his half-century, anchoring RCB’s chase against KKR. The fan managed to evade security personnel and reached Kohli, hugging him and falling at his feet in admiration. The match was halted for a few minutes as security escorted him off the field.

What Kohli said to the pitch invader?

In a heartwarming gesture, Kohli picked up Pakhira, asked his name, and advised him to “run away fast” before security intervened. Kohli also requested guards to handle the situation gently, ensuring no harm came to the young fan. This composed response showcased Kohli’s understanding of his fans’ devotion.

“The moment I touched his feet, Virat Kohli sir, asked my name and said, ‘Jaldi se bhaag jaa (run away fast). He even asked the security to not hit me,” said the fan as quoted by Times of India.

Notably, Pakhira was arrested by Kolkata Police and taken to Maidan Police Station. He was charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 132 (assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant), 329(3) (criminal trespass), and 125 (reckless actions endangering personal safety). Additionally, he has been banned from entering Eden Gardens for the remainder of the IPL season.

Dion Dublin has BBC studio in stitches with seven-word comment about abusive fan

An unruly fan almost incurred the wrath of Dion Dublin during the half-time break of Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup.

Unai Emery‘s side needed less than 60 seconds to open the scoring at Villa Park as Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky failed to keep out Jacob Ramsey’s powerful strike.

Although Heung-Min Son had a golden chance to equalise denied by a superb save by Emi Martinez, the majority of chances in the opening 45 minutes belonged to Villa.

In total, the hosts fired off 11 shots with four on target while Spurs mustered just three overall.

However, Tottenham made it to half time down just one goal thanks to a number of impressive stops from Kinsky.

As is customary, the half-time break led to analysis from the BBC‘s studio panel of ex-Villa striker Dublin, Jermain Defoe and Joe Hart.

But it seemed one supporter decided they would look to steal the limelight during the interval.

The broadcaster’s studio was situated next to the away section at Villa Park and the fan, evidently annoyed at what his team served up inside the first half, let his frustrations known.

As Hart began to speak, a loud banging was heard on the studio glass.

He sat back in his chair and looked unsure what to do, while Defoe and Dublin turned to see who was behind the mischief.

The fan could then be heard yelling: “W******!”

But Dublin eased the tension with a hilarious quip.

“I’ll take him outside in a minute,” Dublin said.

Perhaps the fan was still angry with Tottenham’s midweek performance against Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

Having beaten the Reds 1-0 in the opening leg, Tottenham were no match for their rivals’ energy in the return leg at Anfield.

Cody Gakpo‘s strike in the 34th minute levelled the tie before a three-goal onslaught in the second-half booked Liverpool a spot in the Carabao Cup final.

Tottenham’s loss also came at the cost of yet another injury after Richarlison was forced off late in the first half.

Things didn’t get any better for Spurs in the second half with Morgan Rogers extending Villa’s lead on 64 minutes when he fired into the roof of the net from close range.

Mathys Tel netted late on for the visitors to spark a nervy finish, but Villa held on to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in a decade.

Villa also handed out debuts to Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio as the pair entered the contest midway through the second half.

Although neither got on the scoresheet, both showed numerous glimpses of their immense quality and no doubt left the Villa supporters excited for more.

The incident is related to an alleged headbutt on Manchester United legend Keane at the Emirates Stadium on September 3.

Arsenal beat United 3-1 while Keane was working as a pundit for Sky Sports at the time.

Footage from the day showed fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards break up an altercation between Keane and an unidentified man.

It was alleged that the person, who Richards was holding back, had thrown a headbutt at Keane.

The Red Devils legend was also gesturing towards the man as footage went viral on social media.

The moment happened as Keane and Richards were making their way down to the pitch near full-time.

Alejandro Garnacho just had a goal ruled out for offside while the two pundits were getting ready for the usual post-match debrief on the pitch.

At the time, the Metropolitan Police announced that an arrest had been made.

India skipper Rohit Sharma won the hearts of many after a clip of his heartwarming gesture towards a young fan who invaded the pitch circulated on social media. The Men in Blue registered a comprehensive win over New Zealand by 8 wickets in a series clinching contest in the second ODI in Raipur.

In the midst of the Indian batting innings, Rohit who took the field in their chase of 108 runs faced a peculiar moment when a young fan invaded the pitch to hug him. However, the guards present in the stadium in Raipur quickly noticed the fan running towards the skipper and immediately took the field to stop the invader.

In a video circulated on social media, Rohit was seen stopping the guards who nearly knocked down the fan during the match. The skipper further requested them to be a bit gentle with the lad and was later escorted by the security into the stands.

India relish back-to-back wins in ODIs

The Men in Blue are currently riding high on the back of consecutive series wins in the 50-over format as the side emerged victorious against Sri Lanka recently and have clinched the ongoing series against the BlackCaps. Thanks to a sensational bowling performance by the Indian bowling unit which made life easier for the batters to chase the total, India swiftly took an unassailable lead in the series.

Adding to this, the win against the Kiwis also dislodged the latter from the No. 1 spot in the Men’s ODI team rankings. The BlackCaps now sit at the second spot with 113 rating points and 3166 overall points whereas England toppled the former to lead the charts with 3,400 overall points.

Rohit Sharma and Co. will be on the lookout to complete a series sweep against the visitors before shifting the focus to the T20I series. On the other hand, New Zealand will play for pride when they take the field on January 24 in Indore.
