World Cup hero gone, two shock returns and six rookies as Popovic names Socceroos squad

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has made 10 changes to his squad for two must win World Cup qualifiers this month against Indonesia and China, headlined by the omission of veteran striker Mitch Duke.

The extended 26-player squad features six uncapped players in Scotland based midfielder Nectarios Triantis, Melbourne Victory midfielder Ryan Teague, Melbourne City defender Kai Trewin, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Thomas Glover, fellow shot stopper Paul Izzo and Sydney FC defender Alex Grant. It’s the first time Triantis, Teague, Grant and Trewin have earned a senior national team call-up.

Popovic has also turned to two players, Jason Davidson and Fran Karacic, who haven’t been a part of the Socceroos’ set-up for some time. Davidson, a 33-year-old left back who plays for Panserraikos F.C in the Greek Super League, hasn’t featured for Australia since a friendly against Jordan in 2022. Before that, the 2015 Asian Cup winner’s last appearance was in a World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh in November that year. Karacic’s last involvement for the Socceroos was during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The right back, who now calls NK Lokomotiva in Croatia home, was part of the squad for all four games and featured in the group stage win against Tunisia and the 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16.

A raft of injuries to first choice players made picking this squad a tricky task. Goalkeeper Joe Gauci (hip), defenders Hayden Matthews (ankle), Harry Souttar (achilles), and Jordy Bos (hamstring) are all missing while Riley McGree (knock) continues to struggle with his fitness at Middlesbrough. Alessandro Circati is also a long-term absentee as the 21-year-old Parama defender continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament tear. The only two bits of good news from the frequent medical reports came in the form of striker Kusini Yengi returning to action for Portsmouth in the Championship three weeks ago after the 26-year-old hurt his knee in the Socceroos last match against Bahrain in late November while giant defender Cameron Burgess has seemingly shrugged off a calf complaint suffered in Ipswich Town’s fifth round FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest on March 4.

The rest of the squad is a mix of potential, young stars ready for their chance and one veteran who probably thought his time had passed.

Melbourne Victory’s Daniel Arzani gets another chance to impress after Popovic blasted the talented winger during an interview with reporters in January. The coach said Arzani “wasn’t good enough” when he came into camp in October last year and that his “level was really poor in training.” Arzani, once dubbed “the next big thing” in Australian football, missed selection for the November window and has been left in no doubt as to what Popovic wants to see from him. Marco Tilio’s impressive comeback for Melbourne City from a two-and-a-half-month stint on the sidelines with a hamstring injury has also caught Popovic’s eye. Those two will be fighting to fill the inverted winger role with Ajdin Hrustic not selected. Hrustic has played just 16-minutes for Italian second division side US Salernitana in 2025.

Triantis made himself almost impossible to ignore after a stunning run of form for Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League where he has featured as a ball-winning midfielder. Melbourne Victory’s Ryan Teague adds depth to the fight for that deeper lying role in the centre of the park. Speculation had recently linked him to the Chinese national team if his exploits had seen him overlooked for Australia again.

Triantis and Teague were picked over Max Balard and Patrick Yazbek. Balard has been a regular starter for NAC Breda in the Dutch top flight and was called into the Socceroos squad for the November window, but didn’t get on the field.

Defender Alex Grant gets his reward for a solid run of games with Sydney FC since signing a short-term deal with the Sky Blues in February. Grant is hugely experienced and has an Asian Champions League final appearance and a Korean Cup winners medal on his resume from his time with Pohang Steelers. At 6 foot 3 inches, the 31-year-old goes some way to filling the giant voids left by the injured Souttar and Matthews.

“It was a whirlwind start to the beginning of my tenure with the national team, and since November we’ve had the chance to review and assess all facets of our program ahead of these Qualifiers,” Popovic said.

“We understand the importance of these upcoming games and are excited by the opportunity to further cement our position in the group’s automatic qualifying positions.”

The biggest surprise is Duke missing selection. The striker has been a regular in green and gold since late 2019, but despite a huge work rate without the ball, hasn’t found the back of the net with the type of regularity the Socceroos have needed to smooth their path at or on the road to, major tournaments. Duke has found the back of the net just four times in 24-games at international level since the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The 34-year-old has also played 45-minutes for J-League side Machida Zelvia this season. Goals will now need to come from the boots of Yengi, Adam Taggart and Brandon Borrello.

There also wasn’t room for Nestory Irankunda once again despite the 19-year-old being named the Swiss Super League’s Player of the Month for February after his move from Bayern Munich to Grasshoppers.

The games against Indonesia on Thursday in Sydney and China in Hangzhou on Tuesday shape as crucial to Australia’s hopes of sealing direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada and Mexico. The Socceroos currently sit in second spot in Group C with four games left in the third round. If they stay there, they’ll earn an automatic berth to the game’s global showpiece. It makes two wins from these next two fixtures vital with Japan at home and Saudi Arabia away to come in June. Just one-point separates second placed Australia from last placed China.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the players and getting the squad together on the pitch in preparation for what will be a great occasion at the Sydney Football Stadium,” Popovic added.

    Extended 26 player Socceroos squad:

Daniel Arzani, Aziz Behich, Brandon Borrello, Martin Boyle, Cameron Burgess, Anthony Caceres, Jason Davidson, Milos Degenek, Jason Geria, Thomas Glover (GK), Craig Goodwin, Alex Grant, Jackson Irvine, Paul Izzo (GK), Fran Karacic, Lewis Miller, Aiden O’Neill, Kye Rowles, Mat Ryan (GK), Adam Taggart, Ryan Teague, Marco Tilio, Nectarios Triantis, Kai Trewin, Nishan Velupillay, Kusini Yengi

Ruthless call puts stars on notice; moments that exposed Socceroos’ biggest issue: Talking Pts

Former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold tried to warn anyone who would listen.

Qualifying for the 2026 World Cup wouldn’t be easy.

FIFA’s decision to expand the tournament from 32 teams in Qatar to 48 in Canada, USA and Mexico made it a harder message to sell.

After all, the Socceroos have qualified for the last five editions of football’s showpiece event. How on earth could Australia miss out with double the spots on offer through Asia?

Arnold had raised the alarm time and again about the record amounts of investment being ploughed into national team programs across Asia – teams Australia had rolled through with relative ease in the past.

His warning, in some respect, has come to fruition during this qualifying campaign.

The Socceroos are enduring another rocky road to a World Cup. The latest speed bump in the route will come in Bahrain on Wednesday morning (AEDT) where Australia can either keep their fate in their own hands or face two agonisingly tense international windows next year.

    BAHRAIN PRESENTS A BIG CHANCE

The Socceroos currently sit second in Group C during the third round of qualifying but have just one win to their name. No second placed side, in any of the other qualifying groups, has fewer victories.

Second place presents the golden prize of automatic World Cup qualification come the final international window in June next year.

The only reason they are still in charge of their own destiny is because other sides have continually let opportunities to take control of their own fate slip.

Saudi Arabia, perceived from the outset as a fellow group heavyweight, like the Socceroos, have one win, three draws and one defeat.

China, in fourth place, have one more victory to their name than Australia, but have lost three of their five qualifiers.

The only pattern is that there isn’t one.

Consistency, apart from Japan who sit seven points clear at the top, has been elusive across the board.

Under Tony Popovic there are signs the Socceroos are starting to find their rhythm. Since taking over in October he has secured five points from three games. It has been a solid, but not spectacular start.

The game against Bahrain is must win; especially with Saudi Arabia taking on last placed Indonesia in Jakarta.

The reality of their situation has breached the walls of the camp. Harry Souttar was short, but sharp when asked about it in his final appearance before the cameras prior to the match in Riffa.

“Very important,” the giant centre back said.

“Obviously you can see the table, apart from the leaders Japan, you see how tight it is. It’s a huge game for us and it’s one we’re going to try and do our best at to get the three points.”

Australia, Saudi Arabia and China all enter this matchday on six points with Bahrain on five.

    The margins are slim.

    KEEP THE EMOTIONS IN CHECK

Bahrain set the first dose of third phase drama in motion back in September.

The world number 76 left the Gold Coast with a 1-0 win in what turned out to be Arnold’s second last game in charge after a six-year tenure.

Bahrain not only frustrated the Socceroos via an 89th minute Souttar own goal, but also by staying on the turf for lengthy periods after any contact.

Stand-in captain Jackson Irvine believes the side let it become “the story of the game” and the teams leadership group has vowed to not let their opponents get under their skin again.

“Of course, you want to maintain that discipline and not let it rattle us away from our game, but at the same time, you don’t want to let teams get away with certain kinds of behaviour and you need to have each other’s backs,” Irvine said.

“Probably in the first game against them, we didn’t find that balance well enough.

That’s the biggest thing you want to avoid. You want that drama to not be the centre of the game. You want our performance to be the main focus.”

England thrash Ireland to earn promotion | 00:53

SOCCEROOS MUST BE RUTHLESS IN FRONT OF GOAL

The Socceroos have taken 58-shots during the third round with 14 of those classified as on target. Yet, after five games, they’ve scored only four goals.

Now, like most statistics, they can be misleading or largely irrelevant when placed in context.

The Socceroos haven’t scored enough goals, but it’s clearly not through the number of shots being taken.

58 in five games is a large number.

What that statistic, and even shots on target fail to measure, is both the quality of the chances and ones that should’ve ended up in one column or the other but didn’t due to decision making.

The Socceroos should’ve beaten Saudi Arabia in Melbourne on Thursday night and to avoid a repeat performance against Bahrain they need to find a ruthlessness in-front of goal.

In Melbourne, Mitch Duke had a chance to shoot after a superb bit of pressing from Aiden O’Neill forced a turnover on the edge of the Saudi 18-yard box. Instead, the veteran striker decided to lay it off to Ajdin Hrustic who under hit his shot into the waiting hands of goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Kassar.

Similarly, Brandon Borrello found himself through on goal and one-on-one with the goalkeeper in the 84th minute. The Western Sydney Wanderers forward opted to square it to Riley McGree instead of finishing the chance himself. McGree was thwarted by a scrambling defender.

    Those two moments were pivotal.

“It’s probably when you look at them all together, it probably looks like we need to have that more clinical edge,” Irvine said.

“Whether it’s someone taking more responsibility earlier without the hesitation or whether it’s squaring the ball in the right time for someone else to have an easier moment.

“There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s just about making sure we find that clinical edge individually and collectively to be able to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Craig Goodwin’s return from suspension should help their pursuit of goals.

The 32-year-old has seven goals to his name for his country and five of those have come in the space of 10-appearances in 2024.

Socceroos survive late scare v Saudi | 03:00

    FIX THE EARLY WOBBLES

The team, by their own admission, have been poor in the first 20-minutes of games so far in the third round.

A lack of possession and a low percentage of passes completed have been consistent themes.

On occasion, it has come through their own doing while in other matches, an aggressive press from the opposition has induced multiple mistakes with the ball.

It has left the side chasing games once they’ve composed themselves, in what has proved to be crucial time lost.

Having a squad of 26 in Bahrain allows training to become match simulation.

A particular area of focus, according to Irvine, has been playing out from the back under pressure. Whether Bahrain will be bold enough to pressure Australia so high up the pitch remains to be seen, but the Socceroos are bracing for that possibility given how effective it has been against them so far.

“It is a question of sometimes the players on the pitch being able to identify solutions in those moments, about trying to find answers quicker,” he said.

“That was the main focus of training yesterday. Especially in and around our box and being calm and trying to find solutions in those areas. It was a topic of conversation post-game after Saudi and we’ve looked at it this week.”

RYAN BENCHING HAS PUT PLAYERS ON NOTICE

One of Tony Popovic’s first tactical decisions was to drop long time goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan to the bench and promote Aston Villa’s Joe Gauci in his place.

Gauci, who has seen some gametime for Villa this season in the League Cup, has played the last three games for Australia. Ryan, who is yet to take the pitch for his new club Roma in Serie A, is enduring his longest ever run out of the starting side since becoming a mainstay in 2013.

According to Irvine, Ryan’s demotion has proved anyone, no matter how entrenched they may seem in the side, is capable of being dropped.

“It shows everybody how key your performances have to be and you have to be on it all the time to make sure you maintain your place in the team,” he said.

Ryan is now 32 which is still relatively young for a goalkeeper and will no doubt continue to fight for his place.

At the very least he’ll be an experienced sounding board for 24-year-old Gauci who is just taking his first steps at a large European club.

That is a journey Ryan knows well.

  • Touching tribute as Matildas put on a show in friendly win over China

Touching tribute as Matildas put on a show in friendly win over China

Substitutes Clare Wheeler and Cortnee Vine had crucial impacts off the bench as the Matildas farewelled Australia before heading to the Paris Olympics with a 2-0 win over China on Monday night.

In front of more than 76,000 fans at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, the Matildas produced a better attacking display than they showed in last Friday’s 1-1 draw against the same opponent at Adelaide Oval.

However, they still had to wait until after half-time to break China’s resistance, with Wheeler and Vine key factors in the win after entering the contest at the start of the second-half.

Midfielder Wheeler, who came on for Emily van Egmond, heading the hosts into the lead in the 48th minute after timing her run to perfection to be first to a well-placed free-kick from Steph Catley.

Sydney FC star Vine, who replaced striker Michelle Heyman, provided the assist for Australia’s second goal in the 56th minute.

Her inch-perfect through ball found Hayley Raso, who rounded goalkeeper Xu Huan before guiding the ball home.

China had a couple of opportunities to fight their way back into the contest, but they were comfortably dealt with by Matildas keeper Mackenzie Arnold, who came on late in the first half for Lydia Williams.

The Matildas should have gone ahead as early as the 11th minute with a chance created by right-back Ellie Carpenter, who mesmerised China’s defence with a superb turn before storming into the penalty area and delivering a low cross that Wu Haiyan failed to properly clear.

The ball fell invitingly for the unmarked Tameka Yallop, but the Brisbane Roar star rushed her shot and failed to test goalkeeper Xu.

However, Xu was called into action five minutes later, standing tall to deny Matildas winger Hayley Raso, who should have done better with her chance.

But Raso made amends after half-time with the match-sealing goal as the Australians did more than enough to take winning form to Paris.

“We wanted to turn up, we wanted to win the game, we wanted to put on a show, so we came out and did a little better than we did in the last game,” Raso told Network 10.

The Matildas’ Olympics squad will be announced on Tuesday but the players were informed before Tuesday night’s match if they had been chosen.

    Farewell Lydia

In her 104th and most likely final appearance for the Matildas, veteran goalkeeper Lydia Williams started the match and wore the captain’s armband.

Emotional before the game when honoured in a ceremony that involved Australian sporting great Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Williams remained composed during her time on the pitch despite the crowd roaring every time she touched the ball.

She was then given a hero’s farewell when replaced by Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold in the 43rd minute.

After handing over the skipper’s armband to Steph Catley, Williams was embraced by all of her teammates as she left the field.

The hugs continued when she reached the sidelined, where she shared a special moment with Arnold, after which she was cuddled by coach Tony Gustavsson and the Matildas’ entire bench.

Williams has announced she will retire from international football after the upcoming Olympic Games.

“To come this far has been incredible,” Williams said.

We will know on Tuesday whether she is selected in Australia’s 18-player squad for Paris, or is among the four travelling reserves.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou joked Wednesday he was packing his bags for Sweden because the country has rejected VAR, which has again been in the spotlight in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest felt aggrieved at a number of decisions in their recent defeat against Everton while Chelsea had a stoppage-time winner ruled out in their 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

Postecoglou, whose fifth-placed team travel to Chelsea on Thursday, said he felt his team should have had a spot-kick during their 3-2 defeat by leaders Arsenal at the weekend.

“I thought we should have had a penalty on the weekend, other people didn’t think we should have had a penalty on the weekend,” he said.

“I wasn’t sure about Micky van de Ven’s offside but other people say it is offside. At the end of the day, who am I to sit in a room and tell officials how to do their job? They should know that — that is their job.”

The Australian said VAR was here to stay despite misgivings over the technology.

“I’d change a hell of a lot on it but again I’ve said before that I think it’s changed the game materially, which I don’t think was the intention when it was brought in.”

Postecoglou joked that he would move to Sweden to get away from VAR.

“Yeah, I’m moving there,” he said.

The Spurs boss said his team, who still have a chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, were showing clear signs of progress despite the damaging defeat to Arsenal, which left them seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, albeit with two games in hand.

    “Absolutely yeah, absolutely,” he said.

“Clearly, clearly. As clear as you want it to be, 20-20, definitely, 100 per cent.

Tottenham will be without Ben Davies, who has a calf injury, and Timo Werner, who has hurt his hamstring, for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Both sustained injuries during the Arsenal defeat and will not play again this season, which could prove to be Werner’s final appearance, although Spurs do have the option to turn his loan from RB Leipzig into a permanent deal.

Tom Rogic announces his retirement to devote himself to his growing family

Socceroos midfielder Tom Rogic has retired from football, declaring it was time he devoted himself to his growing family following fertility issues that had troubled him and his wife for several years.

A little more than three months after fellow Socceroos playmaker Aaron Mooy announced his retirement, 30-year-old Rogic has also hung up his boots after a decorated career that included 53 caps for Australia and 16 major trophies with Scottish giants Celtic.

The Canberra product left Celtic in May last year before joining English Championship club West Bromwich Albion four months later for the remainder of the 2022-23 season.

Rogic’s final appearance for West Brom was on April 23 in a 2-1 loss to Sunderland.

Rogic announced his retirement on social media, saying it was “important for people to understand why and how” he made his decision.

“Throughout the past seven years, my wife and I have been on an immensely challenging journey with fertility issues. After years of trying and many failed rounds of IVF, my wife and I were fortunate enough to welcome the birth of our daughter in 2021,” Rogic said.

“I have loved every minute of being a dad and consider it my greatest achievement in life.

“After experiencing some more struggles and heartache with fertility treatment, we have recently received the amazing news that our family is growing and we will be expecting twins in 2024.

“Given our past and how hard we have fought for this, along with the challenges that will come with having twins and a two-year-old, now seems like the right time to give my focus and attention to what is the most important thing in my life – my family.

“After being away for so many years, my family and I have now returned home to Australia as we look ahead to next year and the arrival of our new family members.”

Rogic said he felt “very lucky” to have represented the Socceroos and played for Celtic.

“As a young boy growing up in Australia I couldn’t have imagined experiencing all I was able to do in football,” he said.

“I’d like to thank all of my teammates for everything over the past 12 years. It’s been a special journey which I’ll look back on with fond memories. I feel very lucky to have formed some wonderful friendships through football and experienced so many special moments together.”

He also expressed special thanks to former Celtic chief executive officer Peter Lawwell and Celtic’s major shareholder Dermot Desmond for their help with Rogic’s hopes of starting a family.

“Without their help all of this would not have been possible. Through Peter and Dermot, I was put in direct contact with one of the world’s leading medical experts, which eventually led to my wife and I being placed at the clinic that would give us the best chance possible to start a family – I will be forever grateful,” he said.

Rogic also thanked a host of his former coaches, including Ange Postecoglou, and “all the fans”.

“You have been everything to me,” he said.

USA ‘exposed’ in World Cup upset to set up Germany vs Serbia final

Germany and Serbia set up a Basketball World Cup final showdown, as the United States and Canada both crashed out in the semi-finals.

The US were looking to atone for their seventh-place finish at the tournament in China four years ago but they lost 113-111 after facing an inspired German team in Manila.

The Germans went toe-to-toe with their more celebrated opponents and will now play in their first-ever World Cup final on Sunday.

Head coach Gordon Herbert hailed his “special group” of players but said they were “not where we want to be yet”.

“This group of players wants to win gold,” he said.

“One more to go. We’ll let the players enjoy this tonight and tomorrow morning when we wake up, this is over.”

Andreas Obst, who was a constant thorn in the Americans’ side, finished as Germany’s top scorer with 24 points.

Franz Wagner with 22 points and Daniel Theis with 21 also made huge contributions.

Things started to go wrong for the US in the third quarter when Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson both made simple mistakes to hand Germany a six-point lead.

Germany built on the advantage and Dennis Schroder nailed a shot to put his team 10 points ahead at the end of the third quarter.

US head coach Steve Kerr said his team “weren’t able to make them feel us defensively”.

“I thought we made some mistakes,” he said.

“It sounds crazy but the first offensive rebound of the game we got boxed out. Right from the beginning you’ve got to set a tone.”

Anthony Edwards finished as the United States’ top scorer with 23 points, followed by Austin Reaves with 21 and Mikal Bridges with 17.

“Any time you lose, it sucks,” said Reaves.

“As a competitor, losing is the worst thing that can possibly happen.” It was the United States’ second defeat of the tournament, having lost to Lithuania in the second round.

Germany are still unbeaten and centre Johannes Voigtmann said they had a “chance to do something historic” in Sunday’s final.

“We’re going to do everything from tomorrow on to prepare mentally for this game, because this is the most important one we have to win,” he said.

Media personality Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN’s ‘First Take’ that USA’s shock loss gives credence to controversial comments from American track and field star Noah Lyles last week.

“You know the thing that hurts me the most? I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have ‘world champion’ on their heads,” Lyles said at the time when asked about the state of athletics on a global scale.

“World champion of what? The United States?

“Don’t get me wrong. I love the US at times. But that ain’t the world. That is not the world – we are the world.

“We have almost every country out here fighting, thriving and putting on a flag to show that they are represented.

“There ain’t no flags in the NBA. We got to do more. We got to be presented to the world.

“I love the track community, but we can only do so much within our own bubble. There’s a whole world out there.”

Those comments, which came after Lyles won a third-straight world championships gold medal in the 200m, drew a reaction from NBA stars including Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Both players will likely be part of USA’s Olympic team for Paris next year, although the fact they sat out the World Cup speaks to one of the challenges the nation faces on the global stage.

It is a point Smith made when claiming USA was “exposed” by Germany on Friday night.

    “That’s glaring,” Smith said.

“And it gives credence to Noah Lyles … who basically said, ‘This ain’t no world championship when they win the NBA championship, because the NBA championship is not the world.’

“International competition is different and the USA gets exposed because [of] their lack of depth [and] lack of cohesiveness compared to some of these other teams. It speaks volumes and this is the latest example.”

SERBIA STUN CANADA AS SGA SHUT DOWN

Serbia will be waiting for them after beating Canada 95-86 in the day’s first semi-final.

Bogdan Bogdanovic had another standout performance for the Serbians, scoring 23 points and racking up three assists and four rebounds.

Serbia lost in their only previous final appearance as an independent country in 2014, and shooting guard Marko Guduric said they were ready to play “the biggest game of our lives” against Germany.

“To represent our country and this jersey, for ourselves and our families and all the people in Serbia, it’s a great honour and we cannot wait for the final game,” he said.

Serbia seized control of the game in the first half against a Canada team playing in their first World Cup semi-final.

Canadian danger man Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was unable to get into a groove and finished with only 15 points.

“For our team it was additional motivation to take him out of the game,” said Serbia head coach Svetislav Pesic.

“Difficult, but I think we made this job with great success.”

The Canadians had already secured a qualifying spot at the Paris Olympics after finishing as one of the two highest-placed teams from the Americas.

They still have the chance to claim their first-ever World Cup medal, and head coach Jordi Fernandez said he was “excited” about facing the US in Sunday’s third-fourth-place playoff.

“None of these guys have ever been in this position and to win it would mean we fought for something, but we know that we can still be better,” he said.

“We want to leave this tournament being hungry and being thirsty, and building this programme all the way to the top.”

Serbia have reached the final without Nikola Jokic, who was named MVP of the NBA Finals last season after leading the Denver Nuggets to the title.

Jokic is not playing at the World Cup as he prioritises rest ahead of the new season.

Guduric said “it doesn’t matter who’s not here”.

“It’s all about this group of guys,” he said.

“Whoever is here, whoever is wearing this Serbian jersey, we never give up. We fight until the end — it’s in our blood.”

  • Messi’s head-spinning $1.9b Saudi switch at ‘final stage of the deal’ as Madrid superstar set to follow

Messi’s head-spinning $1.9b Saudi switch at ‘final stage of the deal’ as Madrid superstar set to follow

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal football club have flown to Paris to seal a mega-deal with departing superstar Lionel Messi, two sources with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Sunday.

The Saudi delegation plans to meet Messi’s father and agent, Jorge, with the aiming of completing the signing as soon as possible, the sources said.

Messi’s departure from Qatar-owned Paris-Saint Germain was confirmed on Saturday and he was jeered by a section of the club’s fans in his final appearance, a 3-2 defeat by Clermont.

“There is a Saudi delegation in Paris with one goal: to return with Messi official approval to the Saudi offer,” a source close to the club said.

Another official, who is close to the negotiations, said: “We are in the final stage of the deal.

“If everything goes well, Messi will sign his new contract and Al-Hilal will announce it before the weekend.”

According to Foot Mercato, Messi’s new contract with Al Hilal is reportedly worth a head-spinning $AUD1.9 billion over two years.

Messi, 35, arrived in Paris two seasons ago from Barcelona but was unable to help PSG win an elusive Champions League title, as the club suffered last-16 defeats in both campaigns with the Argentine maestro.

Along with oil-wealthy Saudi Arabia — where Cristiano Ronaldo has been playing since January — the seven-time Ballon d’Or-winner has also been linked with a return to Barcelona and with David Beckham’s Inter Miami.

He is not the only star being courted by Saudi Arabia, which is attempting to improve its austere image and attract tourists and investment, partly through the vehicle of sport.

On Saturday, Saudi state television channel Al-Ekhbariya said French striker Karim Benzema, who is leaving Real Madrid, had signed with Jeddah-based Al-Ittihad.

According to Al-Ekhbariya, the Saudi champions’ president and his deputy were in the Spanish capital to sign Benzema in a “record transfer with Real Madrid”.

Saudi-Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, has thrown hundreds of millions at sports deals including Ronaldo’s signing, Formula One and the divisive LIV Golf tour, drawing frequent claims it is “sportswashing” its human rights record.

Last month, a source close to the negotiations in Saudi Arabia told AFP that Messi’s signing was a “done deal”, describing the contract as “huge”.

Messi, who lifted the World Cup in Qatar in December, was suspended by Qatari-owned PSG last month for an unauthorised mid-season trip to Saudi, where he is a tourism ambassador.

Messi booed by own fans in dismal final game as PSG stunned

Lionel Messi was jeered by a section of Paris Saint-Germain supporters as he played his final game for the club in the Ligue 1 champions’ 3-2 home defeat by Clermont on Saturday.

Messi’s expected departure from the French giants after two seasons was officially confirmed by PSG in a statement shortly before Saturday’s game.

“His contribution to Paris Saint-Germain and Ligue 1 cannot be underestimated and we wish Leo and his family all the best for the future,” said PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi.

Yet Messi, who ends his PSG career with 32 goals in 75 appearances, was jeered by some fans as the teams were announced at the Parc des Princes and the Argentinian World Cup winner was again whistled sporadically during the match.

There was little riding on the game itself after PSG wrapped up a record 11th French title last weekend, and Christophe Galtier’s side contrived to throw away a two-goal lead.

Sergio Ramos, whose own departure from PSG was confirmed on Friday, marked his final appearance by heading in a Vitinha cross for the opener in the 16th minute.

Mbappe, looking to end a fifth consecutive season as Ligue 1’s top scorer, then scored a penalty to make it 2-0 with his 29th league goal this season, which he marked by holding up goalkeeper Sergio Rico’s number 16 jersey.

Spaniard Rico, PSG’s back-up goalkeeper, is in a serious condition in hospital in Seville after being injured in a horseriding accident last weekend.

“The most important thing was the tribute to Sergio,” Mbappe told broadcaster Canal Plus.

“There are more important things than football, and on the pitch we were already champions. We could have lost 22-0 and that would not have changed anything for us.

“We had to pay tribute to Sergio. I think we have all been affected by what is an extremely serious situation. We have been worried about that all week and so we tried to pay tribute in the best possible way.”

Mbappe’s goals tally left him two ahead of Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette in the final standings.

Johan Gastien pounced on a Marco Verratti mistake to pull a goal back for Clermont, who then saw Grejohn Kyei miss a penalty.

The visitors then equalised in first-half stoppage time when Mehdi Zeffane netted from close range after Gianluigi Donnarumma spilt the ball.

Kyei got Clermont’s winner in the second half when he turned in a cross with his knee.

A famous win for Clermont sees them finish the season in eighth place. PSG picked up the championship trophy after the game but end the season with seven league defeats, all of them suffered in 2023.

Messi was signed two seasons ago from Barcelona to help PSG win an elusive Champions League, but he failed in that aim.

The French club were beaten in the Champions League last 16 by Real Madrid last season and suffered the same fate this year at Bayern Munich’s hands.

Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or seven times, has earned an estimated annual salary of 30 million euros ($32.1 million) after tax at Qatar-backed PSG.

Barcelona, the club where he has played most of his career, would love him to return but the possibility has appeared to be fading in recent weeks.

Instead, Saudi Arabia might be his next destination.

A source with knowledge of the Saudi negotiations told AFP last month that it was a “done deal” for him to play in the Saudi league, although Messi’s father Jorge denied then that his son had decided his next destination.

Inter Miami have also reportedly made an offer to take him to Major League Soccer.

‘Bullied’ Leicester crash out; City star makes statement, reflects on ‘lowest’ moment: FA Cup Wrap

Phil Foden struck twice as Manchester City eased into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-0 win against Bristol City, while 2021 winners Leicester suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against second tier Blackburn.

Pep Guardiola’s side were never in danger of a giant-killing in the fifth round tie at Ashton Gate thanks to Foden’s brace and a late strike from Kevin De Bruyne.

City will hope for another boost when Premier League leaders Arsenal, two points ahead of the champions, face Everton in their game in hand.

De Bruyne returned after missing two games through illness, while Kalvin Phillips started for only the second time since joining City from Leeds last year.

City took a seventh minute lead when Riyad Mahrez crossed to the far post, where Foden fired into the roof of the net.

Foden doubled City’s lead after 74 minutes as Julian Alvarez flicked towards Foden, who produced another clinical finish past Max O’Leary.

De Bruyne got the visitors’ third from long-range in the 81st minute to ensure the smoothest of nights for the six-time FA Cup winners.

It was an impressive game for Foden and one that meant a lot given the adversity he has faced, with the Manchester City star opening up on the “lowest parts” of his career post-game.

“I am feeling much better in my feet,” Foden said, reflecting on injuries and time spent out of the team.

“You know it is not easy sometimes when you play with discomfort in your feet.

“I feel 100 per cent fit now and comfortable so hopefully I can come back into the team and help them as much as possible. It has definitely [been frustrating], it has been one of the lowest parts of my career but everyone goes through them, it’s how you react.”

LEICESTER ‘BULLIED’ AND BOOED OFF AFTER SHOCK DEFEAT

Leicester were booed off by angry fans after Blackburn ended the Foxes’ bid to reach a second FA Cup final in three seasons.

Brendan Rodgers led Leicester to the club’s first ever FA Cup triumph in 2021, but Rovers punished woeful defending from the Premier League side to shatter their hopes of emulating that run.

With Leicester 14th in the top-flight, just three points above the relegation zone, Rodgers made six changes to the side beaten by Arsenal at the weekend and paid the price for his gamble.

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side, fourth in the Championship, are into the last eight for the first time since 2015.

Sammie Szmodics made it 2-0 to Blackburn seven minutes after the break following good work by Sam Gallagher.

Kelechi Iheanacho netted from Harvey Barnes’ pass in the 67th minute, but Blackburn held on.

“Leicester are a strange team they suffer some real poor results and performances and then they can go on a run,” former Everton midfielder Leon Osman said on BBC Sport.

“They are a team in transition but performances like tonight will always worry a manager, they were bullied by at times by a Championship team here and they will need to get that out of their system.”

As for Blackburn, Osman said based on Wednesday’s game, they are “onto bigger and better things”.

“They showed all the different styles of how to win a game and dominated Leicester at all of them,” he said.

“They have group of young players who are going to develop and it is really enjoyable to see.”

    FULHAM’S STUNNING 13-YEAR FIRST

Manor Solomon scored for the fourth time in four game as Fulham beat Leeds 2-0 at Craven Cottage to make the last eight for the first time since 2010.

Fulham, who have exceeded all expectations to climb to sixth place in the Premier League this year, took the lead through Joao Palhinha’s superb 25-year curler in the 21st minute.

Palhinha’s strike came after Georginio Rutter thought he had scored his first goal for Leeds when he tapped home after Marek Rodak had palmed the ball into his path.

But referee Chris Kavanagh ruled it out for a foul in the area and VAR did not intervene.

Israel forward Solomon, on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, finished off Leeds in the 56th minute, curling in from the edge of the area after playing a one-two with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Fulham can still dream of a first FA Cup final appearance since 1975.

But it was a first defeat for new Leeds boss Javi Gracia, whose side won 1-0 against fellow strugglers Southampton in the Premier League last weekend.

Brighton won 1-0 at second tier Stoke to reach the quarter-final for the third time in the last six seasons.

The Seagulls, who beat holders Liverpool in the fourth round, remain in the hunt for a first FA Cup final appearance since 1983.

Brighton landed the decisive blow in the 30th minute when teenage forward Evan Ferguson met Kaoru Mitoma’s pass with a close-range finish.

Among the four remaining fifth-round ties on Thursday, League Cup winners Manchester United host West Ham, while Tottenham travel to Sheffield United.

    FA Cup results on Wednesday:

    Fifth round

    Stoke 0 Brighton 1 (Ferguson 30)

    Leicester 1 (Iheanacho 67) Blackburn 2 (Dolan 33, Szmodics 52)

    Fulham 2 (Palhinha 21, Solomon 56) Leeds 0

    Bristol City 0 Manchester City 3 (Foden 7, 74, De Bruyne 81)
