‘‘Will be a superstar’: Liverpool gun set to join Spanish giants on blockbuster $450k per week move

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid from Liverpool at season’s end is a done deal, according to multiple reports from the United Kingdom and Spain.

The defender has been tipped to trade Anfield for the Bernabeu on a free transfer at the end of his contract for some time, and it has been reported that the Spanish giants have secured the 26-year-old with a five-year offer worth more than £220,000 a week.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side view the England international as the long-term successor to 33-year-old Dani Carvajal, who is out with an ACL injury sustained in October, and he would join the likes of top English players David Beckham, Steve McManaman, who backed Alexander-Arnold to “be a superstar” in Madrid, Michael Owen and Jonathan Woodgate to represent Los Blancos.

Alexander-Arnold has been free to discuss terms with overseas clubs since January, and his impending move to Real would also reunite him with his friend and England teammate Jude Bellingham.

Real made an approach to Liverpool on New Year’s Eve to try sign Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window, but the Premier League champions in waiting declined to cash the right-back in for reportedly around £20 million to boost their chances of a league crown.

That move was vindicated as Arne Slot’s side sits 12 points clear atop of the table with nine matches remaining, but will leave them without any profit on Alexander-Arnold as he can join Real for free like French superstar Kylian Mbappe did last year from PSG.

Alexander-Arnold is sidelined at present after injuring his ankle during the Reds’ Champions League exit at the hands of PSG and missing the League Cup final loss to Newcastle as a result.

He is tipped to return next month, in time for the crowning few weeks of the Premier League campaign and what is set to be a fitting farewell to his boyhood club.

Alexander-Arnold made his first team debut as an 18-year-old in 2016 after joining Liverpool’s academy as a six-year-old.

Many Reds fans on social media have been outraged however, calling for him to not be selected for the remainder of the season

Under esteemed manager Jurgen Kloop, Alexander-Arnold won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and Club World Cup.

He is also one of three key Liverpool players out of contract at season’s end, with the futures of golden boot leader Mohamed Salah and star defender Virgil van Dijk still unclear.

Liverpool have declined to comment on the reports.

‘Time for change’: England boss quits after Euro final heartbreak

Gareth Southgate said he was resigning as England manager on Tuesday two days after they lost to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

“It’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,” he said in a statement.

Southgate took over in 2016 when England’s fortunes were at a low ebb. In the last four tournaments he led England to three semi-finals and two finals.

Prior to Southgate’s appointment, the Three Lions had reached just three major tournament semi-finals and one final in their history, when they won the 1966 World Cup.

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England,” said the 53-year-old.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.”

  • Piers Morgan gets what was coming to him after England’s World Cup heartbreak

Piers Morgan gets what was coming to him after England’s World Cup heartbreak

Piers Morgan will always have his delusional moral victory.

The English commentator was surprisingly subdued following England’s dramatic World Cup defeat at the hands of Spain on Sunday night.

The Lionesses were favourites to snap England’s 57-year World Cup drought, but will be leaving Australia with the anguish of knowing the trophy was right there for the taking.

It means Piers’ winter of colonial sporting woe boils down to Ashes failure, a Netball World Cup final loss to Australia and England’s shattering semi-final win over the Matildas.

He’ll always have that one win — and it seemed to be the one thing he was clinging to in the wake of the Lionesses’ crushing loss on Sunday.

Morgan was hooked by a tweet which bluntly pointed out England’s defeat.

The talk show host responded: “Thanks mate. On a positive note, we knocked out you Australians which actually means more to me than winning the World Cup.”

Taking a dip in the pool of Morgan’s misery was too delicious an opportunity for some fans to pass up — especially after the 58-year-old’s “classless” tweet celebrating the Matildas’ defeat.

It certainly didn’t help the sporting relations between the two countries when England cricket captain Ben Stoked also tweeted “Lol” following England’s victory over Australia.

It also didn’t help that England was accused of grubby tactics in physically attacking Sam Kerr during the Lionesses’ semi-final.

For now though, Piers and all of England are hurting – they hadn’t had a team make a World Cup final since their one and only success for the men’s team in the 1966 tournament.

Despite coming out well behind on the scoreboard, Morgan will always have his semi-final win over Australia to help him get to sleep at night.

“England’s fabulous Lionesses crush Australia’s wilting Matildas 3-1 in their own back yard to reach the Women’s World Cup Final … sweet revenge for the Jonny Bairstow Ashes runout debacle. Congrats ladies – you’ve made your country proud!” he wrote on Wednesday.

The tweet attracted plenty of backlash and saw Morgan cop it from all angles, but that wasn’t going to slow him down.

Australian cricketer David Warner stoked the fire the day before the match when he tweeted for the Matildas to “keep an eye out in case the Poms ask to change the ball”. A reference to the controversial fifth Test incident.

Morgan took his opportunity as he quoted the tweet with a brutal reply.

“No need mate, it kept its shape despite repeatedly whacking the back of Australia’s net,” he wrote.

For now, though, the 2023 Women’s World Cup is ending with Morgan getting exactly what was coming to him.

  • Newcastle on brink of 46-year-first after beating Man Utd; Hammers out of relegation zone: PL Wrap

Newcastle on brink of 46-year-first after beating Man Utd; Hammers out of relegation zone: PL Wrap

Newcastle avenged their League Cup final loss against Manchester United as Joe Willock and Callum Wilson clinched a 2-0 win that lifted the Magpies into third place in the Premier League on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s side were beaten 2-0 by United at Wembley five weeks ago in their first major final for 24 years.

But Newcastle might swap silverware for a lucrative Champions League berth and second half goals from Willock and Wilson at a raucous St James’ Park moved them closer to that ambition.

Newcastle’s third successive league win — and their first against United since 2019 — took them above their fourth placed opponents on goal difference.

They sit one point ahead of fifth placed Tottenham, who visit Everton on Monday, as the race hots up to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.

It is 46 years since Newcastle last finished above United, but the Magpies, fuelled by Howe’s astute management and the financial backing of their Saudi owners, now have a rare chance to emulate that feat.

United are without a win in their last three league games, thrashed 7-0 at Liverpool and then held to a goalless draw by lowly Southampton before this setback on Tyneside.

United’s first major trophy in six years was supposed to be the start of a new golden era, but instead they have failed to score in three successive league matches for the first time since February 2020.

It was a dispiriting start to a busy run of nine fixtures in April as Erik ten Hag’s men look to nail down a top four finish, while aiming to advance to the Europa League semi-finals and FA Cup final.

Marcus Rashford started for United after missing England’s recent Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine due to a toe injury.

Yet, in the midst of a superb personal campaign, this was a rare dud for Rashford and United looked toothless as a result.

David De Gea made a brilliant double save to keep United level, repelling Alexander Isak’s header from Jacob Murphy’s cross and then blocking Willock’s close-range effort on the rebound.

The Magpies’ pressure was finally rewarded in the 65th minute when Bruno Guimaraes clipped a cross to the far post and Allan Saint-Maximin headed back towards Willock, who nodded home from virtually on the goal line.

Wilson put the result beyond doubt after 88 minutes with a clinical close-range header from Kieran Trippier’s free-kick.

    – WEST HAM BOOST –

In Sunday’s other game, West Ham scrambled out of the relegation zone as Nayef Aguerd’s first goal for the club sealed a crucial 1-0 victory against fellow strugglers Southampton.

David Moyes’ side kicked off at the London Stadium languishing second bottom of the table, with Southampton in last place.

But Morocco defender Aguerd’s maiden goal since signing from French club Rennes last year lifted the Hammers up to 14th.

West Ham are just one point above the relegation zone, but they have a little breathing space thanks to their first win in three league games.

On the day Leicester sacked Brendan Rodgers after their slump into the bottom three, Hammers boss Moyes must have breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle blew on a result that may have saved his job.

Southampton remain bottom of the table and sit three points from safety after their winless run reached four games.

Aguerd eased West Ham’s mounting anxiety in the 25th minute as the Morocco defender rose to power a header past Gavin Bazunu from Thilo Kehrer’s free-kick.

The goal was initially disallowed for off-side, but after an interminable VAR check that lasted over three minutes, Aguerd was finally able to celebrate.

Southampton nearly equalised in the final minutes when James Ward-Prowse’s cross was headed against the bar by Paul Onuachu.

“We have played better than that and not won this season, but today was all about the result,” Moyes said.

“I have to get results. There’s no protection to stop me losing my job.”
