Poppa masterstroke as exiled star fires; wake-up call behind forgotten prodigy’s return: Talking Pts

The Socceroos might’ve finished 5-1 winners against Indonesia in their crucial World Cup qualifier in Sydney and taken a giant step towards automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup in North America, but coach Tony Popovic made it clear there’s still plenty of room for his side to improve describing the performance as “solid but it wasn’t great.”

Goals to Martin Boyle, Nishan Velupillay, Lewis Miller and a double from Jackson Irvine send Australia to China with three vital points in the bag and full of confidence, but all too aware that its job half done when it comes to jumping the hurdles this international window presented.

The mental resilience the side showed to escape unscathed – albeit with some fortune – from a tricky 15-minute opening period is also a sign of growth as is a welcome surge in the way chances were finally converted into goals. This result bloats Australia’s goal difference column too and that could be one less thing to worry about come the final matchday of round three in June.

It wasn’t all good news though with Martin Boyle and Adam Taggart coming off at halftime. Popovic revealing post-game that both have fitness concerns.

OMINOUS SIGN BEFORE A BALL WAS KICKED

A crowd of 35,241 packed into the Sydney Football Stadium and the Indonesian fans not only made their presence felt but had the decibel reader reaching its upper limits.

The Indonesian national anthem was greeted with full voice by those in red and more than one Socceroos player turned to look at the raucous away end. It did not sound,

look or feel like a Socceroos home game until the goals started flying in.

Remarkably, the Team Garuda faithful were still chanting at 5-1 down in the second half.

“It’s part of football and it’s what we love about it, that teams can come away from home and bring that energy and atmosphere,” midfielder Jackson Irvine said.

“I thought our fans were equally brilliant and pushed us in the key moments of the game and gave us that extra leg up probably when we needed it.”

    A TALE OF TWO PENALTIES

Perspective is in the eye of what colour jersey you were wearing.

The decision to award Indonesia a penalty in the seventh minute after the Brisbane Roar’s Rafael Struick was ruled to have been fouled by the recalled Kye Rowles was

contentious through an Australians lens, but while it was on the softer side it was the right call.

Kevin Diks dulled the debate by hitting the woodwork. A sprawling Mat Ryan guessed the right way in any case and might’ve saved it.

Indonesia coach Patrick Kluivert, in his first match in charge, believed his side struggled to shrug off that setback.

“If you shoot the penalty in it would be a totally different match of course,” Kluivert said.

“From that moment we changed something in our minds.

“We had a grip of the game. I think that we played better than Australia.

“If you score 1-0, I’m sure it will be a totally different game.”

10-minutes later Australia was sent to the spot after Nathan Tjoe-A-On pulled off a tackle on Lewis Miller in the box that looked more like something James Tedesco would execute on this ground in a Roosters jersey. Boyle did the honours from the spot.

The goal helped calm the nerves after the Socceroos were let off the hook just moments prior. The side looked far more settled from that point and Australia led 3-0 at the break thanks to two more goals from Velupillay and Irvine.

“It’s the hardest I’ve been pressed in a home game in a long time,” Irvine said.

“There was absolutely no time on the ball in the middle of the park.

“Once we broke that pressure it looked like we were going to score every time we went through.”

POPPA PULLS THE RIGHT SELECTION CALLS

This was not an easy squad to pick.

Six regular starters were missing through injury and Popovic had key calls to make when it came to his starting wingers and striker.

As Velupillay wheeled away to celebrate with the fans in the 20th minute he had fellow winger Martin Boyle and striker Adam Taggart to thank for the opportunity.

Boyle’s pass found Taggart whose lunging effort resulted in Velupillay being able to run onto the ball and calmly slot Australia’s second.

“It’s a special moment for the boy,” Popovic said.

“Starting your first game, pressure, a stadium that’s full. It doesn’t come bigger than that.

“When he looks back, he should be really proud of that.”

This was the first time Boyle had seen minutes under Popovic after failing to get on the pitch in the November window against Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. 14-goals and 9

assists in 36 games for Hibernian in Scotland made a compelling case for selection.

Velupillay is working his way back into form after a nasty ankle injury suffered against Saudi Arabia in Melbourne. To start him in a game of this magnitude was bold. Taggart deserved his spot after five goals in his last 11-games for Perth Glory in the A-League but hadn’t even been picked in a squad by Popovic yet before this window.

For a goal that released the pressure valve in this campaign to be created by two players who’d never featured under this manager and scored by one still not quite at

top form domestically must be applauded.

Unfortunately, Taggart and Boyle were both substituted at half time with potential fitness issues. Taggart appeared to feel for his groin multiple times just before the break. Asked if there was anything amiss with both players Popovic said “there could be.”

“They both had a bit of a niggle, maybe Adam a little bit more than Martin Boyle.”

“Adam was definitely coming off and Martin was a bit of a precaution.”

IRVINE GOAL A FULL CIRCLE MOMENT

Jackson Irvine is the heartbeat of the Socceroos midfield. His goals in the 34th and 90th minutes were the 12th and 13th of his international career and came on the same

ground where he scored his first ever for Australia in 2017.

“From a personal point of view a special night,” he said.

“I never take it for granted being here and I haven’t played in this stadium since that night.”

    THE RETURN OF DANIEL ARZANI

Arzani replaced Velupillay in the 72nd minute and was greeted by warm applause. It was his first appearance for Australia since a 26-minute spell in a World Cup qualifier

against Bangladesh in June last year.

His last minutes prior to that came against Kuwait in a friendly match in 2018. That was just before the anterior cruciate ligament tear on debut at Celtic that would change the trajectory of his then skyrocketing career.

It took just two minutes for Popovic to call Arzani to the sideline for a chat after his introduction, but generally he worked hard in defence and looked lively in attack.

All of this after Popovic told Arzani his effort in camp during the October international window last year “wasn’t good enough” and that his “level was really poor in

    training.”

It appears to have been the wake-up call the 26-year-old – once dubbed the next big thing in Australian football – needed.

Five months on from that camp and Arzani has impressed his mentor this time around. Popovic does not give out easy minutes even with Australia 4-0 up at the time.

It was an impressive response from a player who can only enhance the fortunes of himself and his country with similar application.

    STATE OF THE PITCH

There’d been concerns about the state of the Sydney Football Stadium pitch in the days prior to kick-off and those fears weren’t alleviated once the game got underway.

Several players lost their footing or looked unsure on the ball. It was not ideal and hampered the fluidity of the game.

“Tough pitch for the players,” Popovic said.

“Very hard underneath and slippery on top. The players were in two minds. Half the players wore studs, and half the players had moulds. It was a difficult one for them tonight. It took a lot out of them.”

MAT RYAN BACK TO HIS BEST ON AN HISTORIC NIGHT

Lost in the euphoria of scoring five goals was the three incredible saves Mat Ryan pulled off between the sticks.

On a night where the goalkeeper became the third most capped player in Socceroos history with 97, moving ahead of another former skipper in Lucas Neill and now only

behind Mark Schwarzer with 109 and Tim Cahill on 108 appearances, Ryan was immense.

He stopped Jay Idzes’ header from a freekick in the 5th minute, made a superb diving save to his left in the 53rd minute and another clutch reflex save down low to his right

    in the 84th minute.

“I have to say I’m not surprised after seeing him when he came into camp,” Popovic said.

“Just a different demeanour and that comes from playing.

“You can see he’s full of confidence and he showed that when he came in. He was a real presence around the group and tonight he stood tall.”

The fact the captain was dropped to the bench for the first three games of Popovic’s tenure now seems a distant memory. His move to Lens in France from Roma in Italy

    has been a masterstroke.

Davidson hoping to re-ignite Roos career | 02:26

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT AT THE BACK

Australia’s backline was hardest hit by the current run of injuries between November and March.

Popovic picked Lewis Miller, Jason Geria, Cameron Burgess, Kye Rowles and Aziz Behich.

Geria, Burgess and Rowles formed the central trio of that combination, and the coach made it clear there was plenty to work on. Indonesia’s goal was well taken, but the lead-up was scrappy.

“The goal they scored probably summarised how we defended,” Popovic said.

“They didn’t create, we gave them chances, we gave them the penalty, we gave them the goal as well.

“Defensively we weren’t great, we were a little bit on edge, a little bit sloppy in our defending.”

WHERE ARE THE SOCCEROOS AT WITH PROJECT POPPA AND WHAT’S NEXT?

Project Poppa is progressing, but it’s far from the finished article. That’s not a bad thing, but just the reality of only being in the job for six-months.

“I aim quite high,” Popovic said with a smile when asked how far along the side is when it comes to implementing his game style.

“They’re not where we want to be, but that’s not a negative that’s a positive. They’ve taken strides forward and it’s not easy to do what they did tonight.”

Popovic pointed to decision making as an area that needs work.

“How do we identify quicker what is happening on the field?” he said.

“That will happen with more games together.

“I felt that this camp or this window of the first game is the first time I’ve felt in training and just around the hotel that this group is now starting to build into something.”

Now, it’s off to China for their next qualifier on Tuesday night.

Australia remains second in group C and in control of its own fate when it comes to securing automatic qualification for next year’s World Cup.

That goal could be a maximum of three games away.

‘Made in Tottenham’: Ange’s relief as rising stars inspire much-needed European victory

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham earned themselves some much needed a respite with a 3-0 win at home against Swedish side IF Elfsborg enough to finish in the top eight of the Europa League.

It was a night to remember for the youth in Tottenham’s squad with three academy players scoring the three second half goals, all of which were their first for the club.

Dane Scarlett broke the deadlock in the 70th minute as he got on the end of a lovely ball from Dejan Kulusevski to head it home, only a week after the 20-year-old was recalled from his loan spell at Championship club Oxford United.

Debutant Damola Ajayi then endeared himself to the Tottenham faithful with the 18-year-old scoring the second goal with a lovely low finish after a one-two on the edge of the box in the 84th minute.

Fellow teenager Mikey Moore put the exclamation mark on the night with the winger dribbling at the Elfsborg defenders before firing into the bottom corner in added time for what was arguably the best goal of the three.

“Yeah made in Tottenham tonight,” Postecoglou told TNT Sports post-game.

“Super pleased for the young boys. We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact we had another couple of 18-year-olds out there as well.

“It’s great. It’s great for the club. I’m sure those boys won’t sleep tonight.

“We needed that. We needed some energy. We kind of designed the game to protect some of our players – we’ve got a big week coming up – and we were going to need the young boys today and they stood up.”

The performance allowed Postecoglou to breath a huge sigh of relief as his side finished fourth in the league phase with five wins, two draws and a loss.

Spurs finished one place behind English rivals Manchester United, who 2-0 away in Romania against FCSB, but they have gained automatic passage to the Round of 16, crucially avoiding a two-leg playoff next month which would have been an added strain on their injury hit squad.

The Australian manager even poked fun at the club’s injury issues with him jokingly acting as if he had pulled a hamstring when the ball came his way, but slipped by him, on the touch line.

Jovial Ange jokes before crucial goal | 00:57

There was some reprieve from the medical team with centre back Micky van de Ven making his return to the starting line-up from a hamstring injury that had kept him out since their 4-3 home Premier League loss to Chelsea in early December.

It was an ideal comeback for the speedy Dutchman, who was subbed off at half time, with Tottenham’s undermanned defence, who have been majorly under the pump in recent times, enjoying an easier night as the ball was almost exclusively entrenched in Elfsborg’s half for the opening 45 minutes.

Spurs were greeted by a yellow wall however, as their visitors defended strongly, clogging up the penalty area to prevent the hosts from taking advantage of any of their 12 shots on goal, or the 83% possession they had in the opening half.

The final matchday of the league phase was just Elfsborg’s fourth competitive outing since the Swedish season wrapped up in November.

In comparison, this was Tottenham 18th match in that time.

Elfsborg needed a draw to book their place in the knockout playoff for a chance to make the Round of 16, so they were content to channel their energy into sitting back and defending to try claim the point they desired.

Van de Ven was not the only big name Postecoglou opted to only give a half with captain Son Heung-min producing a brilliant first half, looking a class above, before making way for Kulusevski, who strongly backed his manager during the week, at the break.

Rodrigo Bentancur joined Son and van de Ven on the bench for the second half with Yves Bissouma replacing him in midfield.

Although, van de Ven’s replacement Radu Dragusin went down with a knee injury in the second half to add further to the casualty ward.

Tottenham face an away trip to Brentford on Sunday before heading north to Anfield for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, which they lead 1-0.

In the Europa League Round of 16, they will face one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland.

City survive scare to set up mouth-watering playoff; Villa pull off miracle in wild final round – CL Wrap

Eighteen matches kicked off simultaneously across Europe on an eventful Wednesday evening but all eyes were on Manchester with the 2023 champions needing a win at home against Belgian side Club Brugge in the final matchday of the league phase to keep their campaign alive.

Entering the night in lowly 26th place with just eight points from seven games, City needed all three points to jump into the top 24 who reach the next phase, and they earned them with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory.

It was far from smooth sailing for City, who will next face reigning champions Real Madrid or German giants Bayern Munich in a mouth-watering playoff for a place in the Round of 16, as despite having 70% possession, they trailed 1-0 at half time.

Raphael Onyedika slammed home the opener in the 45th minute after a brilliant cut back from Ferran Jutgla as Pep Guardiola’s side failed to register a single shot on target in the first half.

Perhaps the fact a merchandise store outside the Etihad Stadium went up in flames shortly before the teams arrived at the ground was a sign that the night was not going to go to plan for City, just as their Premier League campaign has not with the four-time defending champions sitting in fourth place 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

But they managed to click into gear after the break with Mateo Kovacic levelling the scores with a low shot from the top of the box that beat former Liverpool shot stopper Simon Mignolet.

City then received a stroke of good fortune with an own goal putting them in front.

Erling Haaland was waiting for a tap-in on the end of Josko Gvardiol’s low cross at the back post, but Brugge defender Joel Ordonez turned it into his own net as he slid in to try stop the ball from reaching Haaland.

City could finally breath a sigh of relief in the 76th minute when substitute Savinho played the ball down beautifully off his chest from a pass over the top by Jon Stones and smashed it into the net at the near post to add a third.

“We were on the verge, 45 minutes from being out. It is an incredible lesson for me, the club that nothing is (taken) for granted,” Guardiola said.

“In the second half we lifted our soul and our hearts were free.”

Guardiola also suggested that with City’s new signings Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis becoming available, and the potential returns from injury for defensive duo Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias, his side will be raring to go for their clash with either Real or Bayern.

“In two weeks will be better than we are (now),” he said. “Against these two giants, one of them we are going to play, we’ll see how we arrive.”

    LIVERPOOL TOPS TABLE

City’s English rivals all progressed meanwhile, with Liverpool hanging onto first place despite losing 3-2 away to Dutch outfit PSV.

Arne Slot made a whopping nine changes to the starting line-up from the Reds’ 4-1 win at Anfield against Ipswich Town with only Andrew Robertson and Cody Gapko backing up mid-week.

Superstars including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson were among a host of first-choice players who were not even in the squad for the trip to Eindhoven.

Dutchman Gapko scored a penalty against his former club in enthralling five-goal first half that included two goals from the home side in stoppage time to take the lead at the break.

It was an engrossing contest but with Liverpool’s place in the top eight secure and PSV holding firmly onto their lead to ensure their place in the knockouts, a bit of the sting went out of the game in the second half despite Reds 18-year-old debutant Amara Nallo being shown a straight red card for a clumsy challenge after coming off the bench.

It was Liverpool’s first European loss of the season, having won all seven previous matches but Barcelona’s 2-2 draw at home to Italian side Atalanta kept them on top.

Gunners climb to third in UCL with win | 00:45

    ‘IMPRESSIVE’ TEEN INSPIRES ARSENAL

Meanwhile in Spain, Arsenal also made nine changes to their starting XI from their 1-0 win away at Wolves on the weekend.

The Gunners started the final matchday in third place with their spot in the top eight confirmed, so they too took the chance to rest and rotate as they picked up a 2-1 win at Girona.

The hosts scored the opener through Arnaut Danjuma in the 28th minute, but Mikel Arteta’s side responded with a Jorginho penalty in the 38th minute and 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri put them in front four minutes later.

“I’m really impressed, making his debut as a Champions League starter today and scoring the goal that he scored, especially in a very important moment,” Arteta said.

“His influence, his composure on the ball and how aggressive he is when he gets it, it’s impressive.”

In the 77th minute, Arsenal suffered a scare as the ball ended up in the back of their net, but it was ruled out for offside and they held onto third position on the table, winning four straight European matches.

Awaiting them in the Round of 16 will be one of Juventus, AC Milan, Feyenoord or PSV, and with a massive Premier League clash with Manchester City and the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Newcastle to come in the next week, Arteta is hopeful that his team will have the confidence to take down anyone

“Winning in this competition is very demanding but overall the team has been very consistent, regardless of all the issues they have had to face,” he said.

“(Hopefully it breeds) more belief in that dressing room that we are a good team and we can face anyone and still perform and win games.”

    VILLA CLINCH TOP EIGHT BERTH

The wildest match of the night came arguably at Villa Park with Aston Villa prevailing 4-2 in a topsy turvy clash with Scottish giants Celtic.

Morgan Rogers scored twice in the opening five minutes for the hosts and it was party time for Villa fans as they needed a win to book their place in the top eight.

The visitors then threatened a boil over with Adam Idah scoring twice in the space of three minutes later in the first half to level the scores at the break.

Villa down Celtic despite pen blunder | 00:29

Ollie Watkins, who reportedly received a bid from Arsenal earlier in the day that was rejected by Villa, scored in the 60th minute to put the home side back in front but he could have had a brace shortly after when he won a penalty, and slipped when taking it to launch the ball high into the stands.

But Rogers made it four in stoppage time to ensure that he took home the match ball as Villa finished in eighth place to automatically progress to the Round of 16 after chalking up five wins and a draw from eight games in an impressive league phase.

Across the 18 matches, there 62 goals scored with Real Madrid winning 3-0 away at Brest, Bayern Munich defeating Slovan Bratislava 3-1 at home and PSG picking up a 4-1 win at VfB Stuttgart to register a third straight victory and ensure that they progressed.

PSG came from 2-0 down to topple Manchester City in a wild second half, while Real Madrid and Arsenal picked up crucial victories in a thrilling match day of Champions League action.

All six goals at the Parc des Princes were scored after half time as the game went into overdrive with four goals scored in just ten minutes before PSG took the three points 4-2.

With one match remaining in the new-look league phase, City sit one place out of advancing to the knockout stage and will need to defeat Club Brugge at home next week, and hope other results go their way, to progress.

The 2023 champions are 25th on the league table, two points shy of VfB Stuttgart, with the top eight teams automatically qualifying for the Round of 16, while ninth to 24th compete for the remaining eight places in a two-legged play-off round.

Pep Guardiola’s side have made a habit of coughing up leads this campaign after they blew a 3-0 advantage against Feyenoord earlier in the league phase, but City never truly felt on top.

Jack Grealish came off the bench at the break to open the scoring in the 50th minute by following the ball in after Phil Foden’s shot was saved, but spilt loose, by Gigi Donnarumma.

Erling Haaland then, three minutes later, added a goal to his big week – he signed a new ten-year contract with City – courtesy of Grealish’s excellent run into the penalty area setting up a comfortable tap-in.

But in the 60th minute scores were level again as fellow substitute Ousmane Dembele finished coolly and Bradley Barcola capitalised on a rebound opportunity.

The two goals were just reward for PSG’s dominance.

They ended the match with 26 shots compared to nine, and had 64% possession, which led to an unstoppable wave of momentum once they got going.

Joao Neves’ header in the 78th minute put them in front and Goncalo Ramos’ 93rd minute goal, with the last kick of the game, rubbed further salt into City’s wounds.

Ramos appeared to be a long way off-side but VAR ruled the last touch came off a City player and the goal stood.

It was the opposite of a decision in the first half, where PSG were denied an opener by the barest of margins.

On the eve of half time Hakimi’s goal was ruled out with Nuno Mendes ruled off-side in the lead-up by VAR which showed a portion of Mendes’ kneecap to be past the City defender.

The victory was also crucial for PSG as they moved to 22nd with ten points from their seven matches.

Last season’s semi-finalists started the matchday in 26th but now Luis Enrique’s side may have done enough to progress to the next phase.

    – Arsenal on course for last 16 after beating Dinamo –

Arsenal moved within touching distance of the Champions League last 16 after Declan Rice’s goal in just 106 seconds inspired their 3-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta’s side raced into the lead in their penultimate league phase fixture thanks to Rice’s clinical finish.

Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard netted in the second half at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal climbed to third place in the standings.

Arsenal have won five of their seven league phase matches, losing just once, and are almost certain to finish in the top eight, which secures automatic qualification for the last 16.

The north Londoners, who have never won the Champions League, travel to Girona for their last match in the league phase next week knowing a point will guarantee a top-eight berth.

With Arsenal holding a three-point lead over a group of teams below eighth place, even a defeat could still send them through given their superior goal difference.

This was a much-needed victory for Arsenal after last weekend’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, in which the Gunners blew a two-goal lead to dent their Premier League title hopes.

Arsenal have won just two of their last six games in all competitions and moving to the brink of the Champions League last 16 is a welcome boost following their FA Cup exit against 10-man Manchester United and League Cup semi-final first leg loss to Newcastle.

Arteta had urged his players to take advantage of their “strong position” in the league phase by winning on home turf against a Dinamo team fighting to secure a place in the knockout stage play-offs.

They rose to the challenge as Arteta’s decision to play Jakub Kiwior in central defence in the absence of the injured William Saliba was rewarded.

    – Havertz strikes –

Jurrien Timber had struggled in the heart of Arteta’s defence in the Villa game, but Kiwior was more comfortable alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.

Arsenal made a flying start in the second minute as Gabriel Martinelli surged down the left flank and crossed towards Havertz, whose cushioned pass was lashed home by Rice from 10 yards.

The Gunners’ quickest Champions League goal since 2014 provoked an angry response from Dinamo fans, with Rice pelted with plastic cups when he took a corner moments after his opener.

Rice was unfazed and his goal-bound drive was blocked by Dinamo captain Arijan Ademi before Gabriel headed just wide from Odegaard’s corner.

Gabriel screamed in frustration after that miss and Arteta looked equally vexed when Havertz headed woefully wide from another good opportunity.

Croatian champions Dinamo, managed by former Italy World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, barely got out of their own half for long periods.

Odegaard and Raheem Sterling combined to set up Martinelli but the Brazilian’s 20-yard drive was too close to Dinamo keeper Ivan Nevistic.

With Arsenal struggling to deliver the knockout blow, Ethan Nwaneri replaced Sterling as the teenage forward returned from a four-game injury absence.

Havertz finally put the result beyond doubt in the 66th minute, rising to meet Martinelli’s pin-point cross with a glancing header from 12 yards.

After Havertz’s wife was sent death threats following his penalty shoot-out miss against Manchester United, the striker is beginning to work his way back into favour among Arsenal fans.

The much-maligned German’s second goal in his last two games took him to 14 in all competitions this season.

Odegaard wrapped up the comfortable victory in stoppage-time with a cool finish from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

    - Real Madrid thrash Salzburg to get back on Champions League track –

Champions League holders Real Madrid got back on track in Europe with a 5-1 victory over RB Salzburg on Wednesday to ensure they will not be eliminated at the first hurdle.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes struck twice each with French superstar Kylian Mbappe also on target in a ruthless display at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost three of their first six games in a worrying start to the competition and will likely have to compete in the extra play-off round in February which is part of the competition’s new format, unless they can scrape a top eight spot.

Brazilian winger Rodrygo struck twice in the first half to help Madrid take control, with Mbappe netting soon after the break and Vinicius grabbing a brace of his own.

Defeats by Liverpool, AC Milan and Lille put Madrid under pressure ahead of their final two group matches and their Austrian visitors started with vim, pinning back Los Blancos.

Madrid created little of note until Rodrygo’s opener after 23 minutes changed the dynamic of the game.

The winger, in sensational form in recent weeks with eight goals in his last nine games across all competitions, finished neatly after Jude Bellingham nudged a cross into his path at the back post.

His second goal was even better, set up by Bellingham with a brilliant backheel, which Rodrygo finished first time with a crisp curling strike.

Mbappe notched the third early in the second half, pinching the ball from Salzburg goalkeeper Janis Blaswich and tapping home to continue his own recent run of fine form after a shaky start to life at Madrid.

Veteran midfielder Luka Modric sent Vinicius down the left with a fine pass for Madrid’s fourth, and the Brazilian finished with a powerful drive across Blaswich.

Vinicius netted again after Fede Valverde burst down the middle and put him through after a slick team move, with the forward stroking home with ease after losing his marker.

Mads Bidstrup slapped home a volley late on to offer Salzburg scant consolation, as well as carrying on Madrid’s unenviable run of conceding in each of their Champions League outings this season.

Despite the late setback, Madrid’s demolition job was just what they needed to settle nerves after their poor start.

Victory left Los Blancos 16th, a point behind Bayer Leverkusen in eighth, which is the final spot for direct qualification to the last 16.

    – Celtic’s wild victory –

Ange Postecoglou’s former side Celtic endured one of the crazier Champions League nights as they picked a 1-0 win at home to Swiss side BSC Young Boys.

Celtic had three goals disallowed and missed a penalty before they finally scored an 85th winner – which came in the form of an own goal.

Two minutes later, Daizen Maeda was sent off and the home side reduced to ten men as the match got more eventful.

In the end, it was a much needed result for the Scottish giants as they now sit 18th on the table with a guaranteed place in the knockout round heading into the final matchday of the league phase.
