‘Unacceptable’: Arsenal boss storms out of interview, left fuming as grim PL reality sinks in

Declan Rice’s equaliser denied Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim a much-needed win but Arsenal’s faltering Premier League title challenge suffered another damaging blow in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Gunners sit 15 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, now with just one game in hand, with their focus beginning to turn to holding off the chasing pack for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick put United ahead in first-half stoppage time.

The Red Devils, though, could not hold on for just a sixth Premier League win in 16 games under Amorim as Rice swept home on 74 minutes.

United missed a string of late chances to win the game, with a point leaving them down in 14th.

“How we conceded chances in certain moments was not acceptable,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“They have so much quality and they pick the right player and normally that would end in a goal.

“We opened the gate to lose the game. there was no chance to lose the game and we opened it ourselves. I will defend my players all the time but in those moments we have to do better.”

Arteta, however, was in no mood to answer questions about the club’s failure to make signings in January amid a striker injury crisis, or about its stuttering title challenge.

The Arsenal boss awkwardly ended a post-match interview abruptly when asked about both matters.

Asked if he regrets not signing a striker in January, Arteta shook his head, said ‘no, it’s not about that’, then started trying to exit.

Stopped and asked for one more question, Arteta paused. But when the interviewer started to point out the 15 gap to Liverpool in the title race, the Spaniard said ‘no’ and completed his walk off.

Spurs salvage draw against Bournemouth | 01:30

Also feeling the heat will be United boss Amorim.

United have had three permanent managers and an interim during Arteta’s five years in charge of Arsenal.

Amorim said he knows he will not get the time Arteta did to turn around a sinking ship at Old Trafford.

The discontent among the home support could be seen around the stands with many taking part in a protest by wearing black over what they perceive as “the death” of their club.

“This club will never die, that is clear,” said Amorim. “You feel it in the streets. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it is harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.”

Arsenal had failed to score in either of their previous two league games to realistically wave goodbye to their hopes of a first title in 21 years.

Premier League wrap: Arsenal fall behind | 03:13

Despite still missing the attacking quartet of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, the Gunners hit back in stunning fashion to thrash PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Infused with fresh confidence, Arsenal started on the front foot but again missed the focal point of a natural centre-forward.

Midfielder Mikel Merino has been forced to deputise upfront in recent weeks and fired wide from the edge of the area with an early opening.

United have struggled for goals all season, but their skipper has remained a source of inspiration and Fernandes produced once more with a sumptuous free-kick just before halftime.

Questions will be asked over Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s starting position, but Fernandes still had to whip the ball over an imposing wall and back down into the visitors’ net.

Spurs suffer huge Europa League blow | 01:41

    – Raya rescues Arsenal –

If Raya was at fault for the opener, he made amends with a string of saves in the second period.

Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee were the first to be denied as United threatened a second on the counter-attack.

Arteta was able to throw on Martinelli on his return from a hamstring injury in the hunt for an equaliser.

Instead, it was Rice who matched Fernandes’ fine finish by arrowing a shot beyond Andre Onana from Jurrien Timber’s pass.

Amorim had dropped Rasmus Hojlund to the bench after a run of 19 games without a goal.

The Dane should have ended that streak when he allowed Rice to get back and make a goal-saving challenge.

More Raya heroics followed to stop Fernandes from snatching a winner as the match entered stoppage time.

However, a draw did little for Arsenal’s title challenge.

Arteta’s men edge four points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest and eight clear of Manchester City in fifth in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Premier League leaders Liverpool needed two Mohamed Salah penalties to beat bottom-of-the-table Southampton 3-1 on Saturday, while Nottingham Forest took a giant step towards the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

Liverpool stretched their lead at the top to a massive 16 points, despite a sloppy first 45 minutes.

Fresh from a smash-and-grab 1-0 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool boss Arne Slot made just three changes.

However, the Dutchman was forced into making three half-time alterations to kickstart the champions-elect.

“The manager was like going for us – but that’s something you need sometimes. Because first half, the game was sloppy,” said Salah.

Southampton have taken just nine points from 28 games all season, but stunned Anfield when Will Smallbone fired the visitors in front in first-half stoppage time.

Alisson Becker was Liverpool’s hero at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday but the Brazilian and Virgil van Dijk got in each other’s way to allow Smallbone to roll into an unguarded net.

Slot turned to Harvey Elliott, Alexis MacAllister and Andy Robertson at the break, and the changes had the desired effect with two goals in three minutes before the hour mark.

Darwin Nunez levelled with a sharp near-post finish from Luis Diaz’s cross. Nunez was then upended inside the area and Salah converted from the spot. The Egyptian slotted home a second penalty two minutes from time to take his tally for the season to 32 goals.

Second-placed Arsenal have two games in hand on the leaders, the first of which comes away to Manchester United on Sunday.

But it appears a matter of when not if Liverpool will clinch just their second league title in 35 years.

Forest pulled four points clear of City in third thanks to Callum Hudson-Odoi’s late winner at the City Ground.

The former Chelsea winger fired past Ederson on 83 minutes from Morgan Gibbs-White’s pass to spark jubilant scenes of celebration as Forest beat the English champions for the first time since 1997.

Two-time European champions, Forest have not experienced the continent’s top competition since 1980.

But they are closing in on the Champions League with a top-five finish almost certain to be enough thanks to the strong performance of English teams in Europe this season.

“We are not here to joke”, Hudson-Odoi posted on social media. “Goal, MOTM (man-of-the-match), three points!” City remain fourth and are looking over their shoulders after a ninth league defeat of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s men are likely to be overtaken by Chelsea, when they host struggling Leicester on Sunday.

Crystal Palace shrugged off the loss of top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta to a serious ear injury to beat Ipswich 1-0 thanks to Ismaila Sarr’s winner.

The Eagles have won nine of their last 11 games in all competitions and climb to 11th.

Brighton boosted their own Champions League hopes courtesy of Joao Pedro’s 98th-minute penalty to beat Fulham 2-1.

Raul Jimenez’s spectacular strike opened the scoring for Fulham, but Jean Paul van Hecke levelled before half-time.

Pedro’s spot-kick lifts the Seagulls to sixth and within one point of City. Aston Villa travel to Brentford and Wolves host Everton in Saturday’s later kick-offs.

“Worst ‘tackle’ ever seen”: Outrage as PL star hospitalised in sickening scenes, vile fan chant

Crystal Palace striker Jean Philippe-Mateta was hospitalised by a “reckless” challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts during the Eagles’ 3-1 win in the FA Cup fifth round, while Bournemouth reached the quarter-finals after a penalty shoot-out victory against Wolves on Saturday.

Roberts was sent off just eight minutes into the south London derby at Selhurst Park after catching Mateta’s head with his boot as he raced out of the penalty area to clear the ball.

Referee Michael Oliver only issued a red card after a VAR review of the challenge, with Roberts winning the ball before accidentally crashing his boot into Mateta’s head.

Mateta received lengthy treatment, including oxygen, on the pitch before being stretchered to an ambulance and transported to hospital.

“Thank you for all your kind messages. I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon. And stronger than ever. Well done guys for a great job today,” Mateta posted on Instagram.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed Mateta had suffered a serious injury to his ear but said the impact could have ended the Frenchman’s career.

“Just imagine if he hits his face straight, with his power, with the studs, it is the end of JP’s career,” said Glasner.

“I’m pretty sure he didn’t want to injure JP in this situation, but I also think that you have to decide when you make such an impact, you just can’t do it in this way.”

Mateta had scored eight goals in his previous nine games and has 15 in total for Palace this season.

Palace chairman Steve Parish described as the “most reckless challenge” he had ever seen.

“That is the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen and I think he needs to have a long hard look at himself, that lad, because he’s endangering a fellow professional, maybe his life, with a challenge like that,” Parish told the BBC.

The UK Telegraph reported that “the Palace forward was the target of chants of “let him die” from some of the 2,800 visiting supporters that could be clearly heard on television”.

BBC commentator Jonathan Pearce said on the broadcast, “Millwall fans are not endearing themselves to anyone with their chanting about Mateta. The football club could be revisited about that”.

Palace made use of the man advantage to book their place in the quarter-finals.

    – Bournemouth drama –

Japhet Tanganga’s own goal put Palace ahead in the 33rd minute before Daniel Munoz prodded in the second seven minutes later.

Wes Harding pulled a goal back for the Lions 13 minutes into first-half stoppage time added on for Mateta’s treatment.

Palace were made to wait until 82 minutes to ensure progress when Eddie Nketiah’s looping header found the far corner.

Bournemouth advanced to the last eight for only the third time in their history with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Wolves after their 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Evanilson’s 30th-minute opener for Bournemouth was followed by VAR controversy as Milos Kerkez had a second ruled out for off-side after an eight-minute check when the new semi-automated version of the system broke down.

Matheus Cunha levelled for Wolves with a second-half rocket to force extra-time, but the Brazilian was sent off for violent conduct after repeatedly clashing with Kerkez just before the penalties.

After Matt Doherty missed when he had the chance to send Wolves through, Boubacar Traore hit the crossbar and Luis Sinisterra sealed the win for Andoni Iraola’s men.

Milutin Osmajic taunted Burnley fans after helping Preston into the quarter-finals for the first time since 1966 with a 3-0 win at Deepdale.

When the Championship sides played in the league two weeks ago, Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri accused Osmajic of racist abuse, allegations which the Preston striker denies.

The incident remains the subject of an FA investigation and Mejbri was left out of the squad for the rematch.

Burnley players declined to shake hands with Montenegro international Osmajic before their latest meeting.

Osmajic got Preston’s second goal late in the first half and celebrated by taunting Burnley fans with his hands cupped around his ears before being embraced by his teammates.

Robbie Brady had put the hosts in front in the 31st minute and Will Keane added a third midway through the second half as Preston ended Burnley’s 23-game unbeaten run.

Underdogs cause massive upset against Belgium; France saved by own goal — Euro Wrap

Slovakia caused the first upset at Euro 2024 as Ivan Schranz fired the underdogs to a 1-0 win against Belgium on Tuesday morning AEST.

Francesco Calzona’s side are 45 spots below third-placed Belgium in FIFA’s world rankings, but they made a mockery of the supposed quality gap between the teams with a courageous performance in Frankfurt.

“We played against a great opponent. We gave it our heart. We didn’t win it by being better, but by being happier,” Slovakia defender David Hancko said.

“That makes the victory all the more gratifying. It’s amazing that we were able to do that.”

Slovakia coach Calzona, who also served as Napoli’s interim boss in the second half of last season, had admitted he would have been “delighted” with a draw.

The Italian got more than he could have dreamed of as Schranz left Belgium reeling after ending his nine-game international goal drought.

Romelu Lukaku missed a host of chances for Belgium and had two possible equalisers disallowed by VAR.

Slovakia’s unexpected victory blew Group E wide open, just hours after Romania beat Ukraine 3-0 in Monday’s other match in that pool.

It was a bitter loss for Belgium, who are already in danger of once again failing to fulfil their potential at a major tournament.

Belgium’s golden generation has lost much of its lustre since they crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in the group stage.

The Red Devils fell at the quarter-finals in the last two editions of the European Championship, making a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup the highwater mark of a talented but underachieving team once hailed as a potential dynasty.

Domenico Tedesco was appointed to replace Roberto Martinez in February 2023 and led Belgium on a 14-match unbeaten run heading into the Euros.

“I knew that eventually we would lose a game. Unfortunately it was today,” Tedesco said.

“The only thing that we didn’t do well was missing chances. We had plenty. It’s part of the game. Of course the players were disappointed.”

Before what was billed as a last hurrah for Belgium’s veteran stars, Kevin De Bruyne had insisted they were ready to do “something good” in Germany.

But instead they reverted to type with a spluttering display that puts them under intense pressure to beat Romania in their second group game on Saturday.

Playing in a Belgian record 11th game at major tournaments, Lukaku should have bagged his 86th goal for his country in the second minute.

Jeremy Doku turned adroitly on the halfway line and accelerated menacingly into the Slovakia penalty area, where his cross was poked toward Lukaku by De Bruyne.

Lukaku looked certain to score but his close-range effort was straight at Slovakia keeper Martin Dubravka.

Lukaku threatened again moments later, only to let Doku’s pass run away from him.

Slovakia punished Lukaku’s profligacy in the seventh minute. Doku’s wayward clearing pass allowed Robert Bozenik to cleverly backheel the ball to Juraj Kucka.

Koen Casteels saved Kucka’s strike but could do nothing about the rebound as Schranz fired home from an acute angle.

Lukaku endured a nightmare evening. He again took a woefully heavy touch to waste a good chance from Yannick Carrasco’s raking pass.

Belgium’s angst increased in the 56th minute when Lukaku was denied by Dubravka’s near-post save.

From the resulting corner, Amadou Onana looped a header over Dubravka and Lukaku slid in to score from a yard out, only for his celebrations to be curtailed as VAR ruled he was off-side.

Belgium laid siege to the Slovakia goal but Dubravka saved well from Leandro Trossard and Lukaku volleyed into the side-netting before Johan Bakayoko’s shot was cleared off the line by Hancko.

In a fitting coda to a day to forget for Belgium, Lukaku blasted home in the 86th minute but the goal was disallowed for handball by Lois Openda in the build-up.

FRANCE NEED OWN GOAL TO EDGE AUSTRIA

Maximilian Woeber’s own goal was enough to give France a winning start to their Euro 2024 campaign on Tuesday as they edged Austria 1-0 in their opening game but Kylian Mbappe came off late on with a bloodied nose.

Woeber diverted Mbappe’s cutback into his own net seven minutes before halftime in Duesseldorf to allow the French, one of the leading contenders to win the tournament, to come through a stiff test.

Austria have been much-improved under Ralf Rangnick and their pressing game often made life uncomfortable for the 2022 World Cup runners-up, who saw Mbappe leave the field near the end after being hurt in a collision.

He had earlier failed to convert a glorious chance that would have allowed France to win by a wider margin.

While Les Bleus were not at their best, they will be relieved to have emerged victorious from the game after a build-up overshadowed by talk of politics rather than football.

Mbappe and other French players had spent much of their time before the media in recent days answering questions about upcoming elections in the country which could see the far-right National Rally become the biggest party.

Any slip-up here would have led to suggestions their minds had not been fully focused on the competition, as France aim to become European champions for the third time, and first since 2000.

Instead, the result leaves Didier Deschamps’ team level on three points in Group D with the Netherlands, who defeated Poland 2-1 in Hamburg on Sunday.

France and the Netherlands meet next in Leipzig on Friday, while Austria face Poland earlier the same day in Berlin.

Austrian midfielder Romano Schmid. Photo by PATRICIA DE MELO MOREIRA / AFPSource: AFP

Austria had enjoyed some impressive results coming into the tournament on a seven-game unbeaten run and their team is on familiar ground during these Euros — their coach Rangnick is from Germany and eight of their starting line-up played in the German Bundesliga last season.

The French, however, are arguably the most talented team at the tournament, led by their captain Mbappe.

He endured a miserable time at his only previous Euros three years ago, failing to score and missing the decisive penalty in a shootout defeat by Switzerland in the last 16.

The new Real Madrid signing will wonder how he did not score in this game, with his first big opportunity arriving inside eight minutes.

Antoine Griezmann and Theo Hernandez combined to release Mbappe, who cut in from the left as he loves to do and shaped to curl a shot into the far corner before instead aiming for the near post.

However, Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz was able to make the save. The Austrians settled into the contest and passed up a wonderful chance of their own to go ahead on 36 minutes.

Skipper Marcel Sabitzer touched down a Michael Gregoritsch cross from the left for Christoph Baumgartner, but he was foiled by goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

That proved crucial as France went ahead two minutes later.

Ousmane Dembele gave the ball to Mbappe on the right, and he produced a stepover to get to the byline before his cutback was nodded into the far corner of his own net by the unfortunate Woeber.

Mbappe was then thwarted by Pentz as he tried to go around the goalkeeper in first-half stoppage time, but that was nothing compared to the chance he squandered 10 minutes after the restart.

Adrien Rabiot sent Mbappe away, bounding in behind the Austrian defence, but he somehow put his shot wide with just the goalkeeper to beat.

That left the game in the balance, and Austria continued to push for a leveller, but without success.

Their fans were less than impressed by what they perceived as time-wasting late on from Mbappe, who needed treatment after colliding with Kevin Danso in the box.

He left the pitch with his shirt stained by blood, only to then come back on and sit down, earning himself a yellow card before being replaced by Olivier Giroud.

  • Erling Haaland’s four-goal haul puts Manchester City one step closer towards fourth-straight title

Erling Haaland’s four-goal haul puts Manchester City one step closer towards fourth-straight title

Erling Haaland scored four as Manchester City closed to within three games of an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title by thrashing Wolves 5-1 at the Etihad.

Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth earlier on Saturday had opened up a four-point lead for the Gunners, but City showed no signs of feeling the pressure as they cut the gap back to one point and have three matches remaining to Arsenal’s two.

Haaland has faced criticism for not matching the standards of his stunning first season in Manchester, when he scored 52 goals as City won the treble.

However, the Norwegian took his tally for this season to 36 goals in 41 appearances with a devastating display of finishing.

“Erling is back to business,” City boss Pep Guardiola said.

“Penalties are a guarantee but the second and fourth (goals) were unbelievable.”

Haaland was restored to Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up after coming off the bench to score against Nottingham Forest last weekend on his return from injury.

However, Guardiola pointed to an earlier injury problem this season that kept him out for two months as the reason behind Haaland failing to hit the same heights as last year.

“He was injured, an important one, and he’s so tall to get back to your best form you need time,” added Guardiola.

Even if City collectively are also not at the same level as a year ago, the remain well on course for a Premier League and FA Cup double.

The defending champions travel to Fulham and Tottenham in their next two games before hosting West Ham on the final day of the season.

And Guardiola insisted they will need to win all three matches, despite Arsenal facing a tricky trip away to Manchester United next weekend.

“One week, three games. Nine points we will be champions, six or seven points, Arsenal will be champions.”

Wolves had inflicted one of City’s just three Premier League defeats this season, but the visitors were blown away as Guardiola’s men extended their unbeaten home streak to 43 games.

Josko Gvardiol was wiped out by Rayan Ait-Nouri for the first of two City penalties and Haaland sent Jose Sa the wrong way to open the floodgates on 12 minutes.

The City striker then rose highest to power home a header from Rodri’s hanging cross to the back post.

Haaland looked set to complete his hat-trick when he raced through in first-half stoppage time only to be clipped by Nelson Semedo.

Referee Craig Pawson initially waved play on, but overturned his decision after a VAR review.

Haaland showed no mercy to fire home his second hat-trick in as many appearances against Wolves at the Etihad.

Any suggestion City could rack up a huge score to chip away at their goal difference deficit compared to Arsenal was punctured as Wolves pulled a goal back early in the second period.

Hwang Hee-Chan swept into an unguarded net after Ederson flapped at a cross. Yet, City’s three-goal cushion was restored in spectacular fashion within a minute.

Phil Foden’s long ball picked out Haaland, who cut onto his lethal left foot and found the top corner.

Haaland’s four-goal haul looks to have settled the race for the Golden Boot as his 25 Premier League goals are now five more than Alexander Isak and Cole Palmer.

“Twenty-five goals (is) not bad,” said Haaland. “We’ve got a not so bad manager who pushes me.

“I try to develop every day. I had some problems (this season) but let’s not focus on them. We’ve got four finals left for our season.”

There could even have been more for City’s number nine, who has twice before scored five in one game since arriving in England.

Sa made a spectacular save to deny Haaland matching that feat once more. And the 23-year-old was left less than impressed with Guardiola’s decision to hand him a rest for the final eight minutes when he was replaced by Julian Alvarez.

It was Alvarez who rounded off the scoring by finding the far corner from Rodri’s pass five minutes from time. Defeat ends Wolves’ hopes of European football next season as they remain 11th.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have now won 10 of their past 11 league games and have added steel to style after faltering badly in the home straight last season.

The Gunners boss hailed his team’s maturity and cleverness against a side who had not lost at home since August.

“In attack and defence we had big performances individually,” he told the BBC. “We missed some big chances but the team looked really connected and had purpose. The last pass and shot to finish the situation could have been better, but it doesn’t matter as we kept going.” Arsenal, who have not been crowned league champions since 2004, dominated the first half at the Amex Stadium but needed a penalty to take the lead.

The breakthrough came when Gabriel Jesus was brought down by Tariq Lamptey and the returning Saka sent Bart Verbruggen the wrong way for his 14th Premier League goal of the season in the 33rd minute.

Arsenal doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark when Jorginho set up Havertz at the near post for a simple tap-in and Trossard made it three with a deft chipped finish.

DE BRUYNE MAGIC HANDS CITY WIN

In the early kick-off, De Bruyne netted twice and top scorer Erling Haaland hit his 19th league goal of the season in City’s 4-2 win at Selhurst Park.

Jean-Philippe Mateta gave the home side a shock early lead but De Bruyne levelled in the 13th minute with a curler into the top corner to quell any nerves from the visitors.

Palace carried an attacking threat but Rico Lewis put City ahead just after halftime and De Bruyne and Haaland combined for the third.

Midfielder De Bruyne added his second with a stinging shot in the 70th minute — his 100th goal for the club — to make the game safe, before substitute Odsonne Edouard scored a consolation.

City boss Pep Guardiola hailed the Belgium international, who missed five months of the season with a hamstring injury he sustained in the opening match at Burnley.

“Sometimes it’s Phil (Foden), Erling or Julian (Alvarez), today it was Kevin,” he said.

“Without him we would not be able to win this. You talk about managers but players like Kevin make this game easy.”

    TOFFEES FINALLY TURN IT AROUND

Everton went into their match against second-from-bottom Burnley desperately searching for a spark after a run of 13 Premier League matches without a win.

They struggled to impose themselves but benefited from a huge slice of fortune when goalkeeper Arijanet Muric’s clearance deflected in off Dominic Calvert-Lewin in first-half stoppage time.

Everton, who last played outside the English top-flight in the 1953/54 season, are now four points above the relegation zone.

But the club need everything they can get as they wait nervously to find out if they will be handed a second points deduction this season for breaking Premier League financial rules.

    BIG BOOST FOR SPURS

Fourth-placed Villa, who drew 3-3 against Brentford, will rue a second-half collapse that could prove costly in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Unai Emery’s men had led 2-0 before three goals in nine minutes from Mathias Jorgensen, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa turned the match on its head.

But Ollie Watkins levelled in the 80th minute, leaving Villa just three points above Tottenham, who have two games in hand.

Carlton Morris scored a 90th-minute goal in Luton’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth — a result that leaves them in the relegation zone but now level on points with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle edged past Fulham 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from Bruno Guimaraes while West Ham came from behind to beat Wolves 2-1.

If Villa beat City for the second time this season, they would move five points clear of Tottenham in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

A Villa defeat would allow Tottenham to move above them into fourth place if they win their game in hand.

“It’s what you expect when you come here. They are a strong team and they sit compact, so you have to be patient,” Spurs’ Australian manager Ange Postecoglou said.

“Disappointed not to get a better outcome but I thought we handled it okay. “I will be very surprised if all games aren’t tight. Everyone is fighting for something. We have to maintain our levels.”

The Aussie bemoaned a lack of ‘clarity’ in their decision making in the final third, but cheekily added: “They are human beings, it is just football.

“I would love to have a joystick and put them where I want them, but it does not work like that. “

West Ham are now without a win in their last four league games, but boss David Moyes could take heart from the way his side bounced back with a spirited display after last weekend’s meltdown.

The Hammers blew a 3-1 lead against Newcastle last weekend as three late goals condemned them to a 4-3 defeat.

Tottenham, without a win at West Ham since 2019, came from behind to beat Luton 2-1 on Saturday thanks to Son Heung-min’s late winner.

The momentum from that gritty success was still fuelling Tottenham as they snatched the lead in the fifth minute in East London.

West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen scuffed wide from close range in the opening seconds and the visitors immediately made him pay.

Timo Werner was the catalyst for Tottenham’s opener with an astute cutback that Johnson converted with a clinical finish from five yards for his fifth goal this season.

Tottenham needed to win by at least two goals to climb above Villa and Pedro Porro nearly doubled their advantage with a long-range strike that fizzed just wide.

Confusion between West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski and Vladimir Coufal ended with the ball running to Son, but Tottenham’s captain couldn’t apply the finishing touch to punish that slack defending.

West Ham made the most of those escapes to equalise against the run of play in the 19th minute as Zouma rose highest to meet Bowen’s corner.

The French defender misjudged his attempted header but still managed to deflect the ball into the far corner off his back.

Bowen weaved through the suddenly anxious Tottenham defence for a deflected shot that Guglielmo Vicario saved at full stretch.

Vicario made an even better stop to push James Ward-Prowse’s dipping free-kick over the bar.

West Ham were on top again after the interval and Michail Antonio’s close-range effort was repelled by Vicario before Lucas Paqueta curled narrowly wide from 25 yards.

As the pressure mounted on Tottenham, Antonio held off Micky van de Ven but hit his shot straight at Vicario with just the keeper to beat.

After labouring for much of the half, Postecoglou’s men almost snatched the points in stoppage time, but Destiny Udogie’s shot was too close to Fabianski.

    STRUGGLING TOFFEES HIT HORROR LOW

Meanwhile, injury-hit Newcastle’s hopes of European football next season were dented by Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late equaliser for Everton from the penalty spot.

Alexander Isak scored for the fifth consecutive game at St James’ Park to open the scoring.

The Swede took his tally for the season to 19 as he cut inside Jarrad Branthwaite and slotted into the far corner on 15 minutes.

How Sean Dyche longs for a striker of Isak’s quality. But Calvert-Lewin ended a near six-month goal drought from the spot after Ashley Young was hauled down inside the box by Paul Dummett.

Everton set a new club record winless run of 13 Premier League games to leave their 70-year stay in the top flight still at risk.

The Toffees edge four points above the relegation zone but have the threat of a second points deduction for breaches of financial rules hanging over them.

    FOREST’S INSANE FIRST-HALF BLITZ

Nottingham Forest pulled three points clear of the relegation zone with a first-half blitz of Fulham to win 3-1.

The home side sped out of the blocks at the City Ground as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood smashed home inside the first 19 minutes.

Fulham boss Marco Silva showed his disgust by making a triple substitution after just half an hour.

However, even that did not halt Forest’s momentum as Morgan Gibbs-White made it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time.

Fulham pulled one back through Tosin Adarabioyo in the second half but it was too little, too late for the Cottagers.

    BURNLEY SLIP FURTHER AWAY

Second-bottom Burnley are now unbeaten in four but slip six points adrift of safety after a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves.

Jacob Bruun Larsen put the Clarets in front, but Rayan Ait-Nouri’s header secured Wolves a point.

Bournemouth climbed above Chelsea into 11th thanks to Justin Kluivert’s winner as they beat Crystal Palace 1-0.

    UNITED’S BIG INJURY BLOW

Manchester United defenders Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof have been ruled out of action for at least a month due to muscle injuries.

Argentine World Cup winner Martinez’s season has been decimated by a series of injuries.

The former Ajax man picked up a calf problem when making his return from a long-term knee issue as a substitute in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Brentford.

Martinez had replaced Lindelof after the Swede picked up a hamstring injury. A difficult second season for United boss Erik ten Hag has been blighted by the consistent loss of key players to injury.

The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League, 11 points off the top four with nine games remaining.

Martinez and Lindelof are also set to miss the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry later this month

Biggest Premier League comeback win in 21 years delivers crushing relegation battle blow

Bournemouth have staged an astonishing fightback from three goals down to beat Luton 4-3 and spoil Tom Lockyer’s emotional return to the scene of his near-death ordeal.

Lockyer collapsed on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest during the second half of Luton’s Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium on December 16.

The Wales defender was “technically dead” for over two minutes as medics fought to save his life.

Rushed to hospital and fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, Lockyer has been able to resume normal life but is yet to return to playing with Luton.

After the original game was abandoned with the score at 1-1, the 29-year-old was back at Bournemouth for the rearranged fixture 88 days on from the harrowing incident.

Lockyer’s presence initially galvanised Luton, who scored three times in the first half through Tahith Chong, Chiedozie Ogbene and Ross Barkley.

But Bournemouth hit back in stunning style after the interval thanks to strikes from Dominic Solanke, Illia Zabarnyi and two-goal Antoine Semenyo.

Third-bottom Luton sit three points adrift of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest after blowing a golden opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone.

Forest will visit Luton in a crucial showdown on Saturday.

Luton’s against the odds bid to extend their stay in the top flight pales in comparison to Lockyer’s own fight for survival.

Lockyer is unsure if he will ever play again after his second collapse, following an similar incident during Luton’s Championship play-off final victory against Coventry at Wembley in May.

For now, he spends his days getting used to becoming a father for the first time after his girlfriend recently gave birth to their baby daughter.

It was a heart-warming scene that greeted Lockyer when he stepped off the Luton team bus to loud cheers from waiting fans.

Lockyer was on the front of Bournemouth’s match-day programme, with mental health first aiders on hand to offer advice to fans at the stadium about cardiac health.

    ‘THEY ARE HEROES’

“I’m quite numb to the whole thing but being back here, I came into the tunnel area and saw the paramedics that saved my life. I recognised them straight away,” Lockyer said in a pre-match interview.

“What do you say other than thank you? They are heroes and they saved my life. I got a little bit emotional.” A banner in Luton’s orange and white colours displaying an image of Lockyer’s smiling face was held up in the away end.

He walked onto the pitch just before kick-off and shook hands with the life-saving medics.

Given a standing ovation from all four sides of the stadium, Lockyer was visibly moved as Bournemouth and Luton fans chanted his name.

Fittingly, the game was memorable for the right reasons this time, although Lockyer and Luton might disagree.

In the ninth minute, Jordan Clark’s pin-point cross picked out Chong and he planted a header past Neto as Lockyer celebrated in the stands.

Luton doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Alfie Doughty’s clever cut-back invited Ogbene to slot home from close range.

Barkley bagged Luton’s third goal in first-half stoppage time, blasting past Neto after breaking Bournemouth’s offside trap.

But Solanke started Bournemouth’s escape in the 50th minute with a powerful strike from inside the area.

Both sets of fans shared a round of applause in the 59th minute to mark the time of Lockyer’s collapse.

Just three minutes later, Zabarnyi had Luton’s nerves jangling when he headed home from a corner.

Luton’s meltdown was complete in the 64th minute as Semenyo drilled past Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski.

And there was even worse to come for Rob Edwards’ side in the 83rd minute when Semenyo produced another blistering strike to leave Lockyer and company stunned.

Gunners go top despite keeper’s howler; Utd keep top four dream alive — PL Wrap

Arsenal needed Kai Havertz’s late winner to go top of the Premier League by beating Brentford 2-1 as Manchester United kept alive their faint hopes of finishing in the top four with a 2-0 win over Everton.

Liverpool’s blockbuster clash against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday gave the Gunners the chance to edge ahead in the title race.

An eighth consecutive Premier League win took Mikel Arteta’s men one point ahead of Liverpool and two clear of defending champions City.

But they had to overcome a glaring error from Aaron Ramsdale on his return to the Arsenal goal.

All seemed to be going to plan for the home side when Declan Rice continued his fine goalscoring form by heading in Ben White’s cross on 19 minutes.

However, there was a sting in the tale in a moment Ramsdale will want to forget in first-half stoppage time.

The England international was making just his second Premier League start since September as the on-loan David Raya was ineligible to feature against his parent club.

Ramsdale’s lack of match sharpness may have been a factor as he dallied on the ball as his attempted clearance ricocheted off Yoane Wissa into the net.

The Arsenal goalkeeper bounced back after the break to make vital saves from Ivan Toney’s spectacular effort and Nathan Collins’ header.

Havertz then bulleted home a header from another White cross four minutes from time.

    GARNACHO SPARK FOR UNITED

Everton were made to pay for conceding two first-half penalties as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scored from the spot.

Erik ten Hag’s team are now eight points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa and three behind Tottenham in fifth, who face each other on Sunday, in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“We need wins,” said Ten Hag. “We’re still in the hunt but it depends on them. “We have to win our games but we know, in the Premier League, everyone is killing everyone.”

Everton sit four points above the relegation zone as their winless league run extended to 11 games.

Alejandro Garnacho was the difference maker at Old Trafford as his quick feet twice provoked spot-kicks.

James Tarkowski was the first Everton defender lured into a mistimed challenge on Garnacho after 10 minutes and Fernandes rolled home his eighth goal of the season.

Garnacho danced through a series of challenges in the 36th minute before he was chopped down by Ben Godfrey.

Fernandes passed over penalty duties to Rashford and Jordan Pickford was unable to deny the forward, who fired home his fifth goal in nine league games.

    LUTON EARN PRICELESS POINT

Third bottom Luton rescued a priceless 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace thanks to Cauley Woodrow’s last-gasp leveller.

Oliver Glasner’s side struck in the 11th minute when Daniel Munoz teed up Jean-Philippe Mateta to flick home.

But Woodrow levelled from Andros Townsend’s cross six minutes into stoppage-time to leave Luton three points from safety.

Sheffield United moved off the bottom of the table but blew a two-goal lead as Bournemouth hit back to rescue a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke missed a 14th minute penalty as the striker slipped in his run-up and ballooned the spot-kick over the bar.

Gustavo Hamer and Jack Robinson struck to put the Blades into a shock lead. But Dango Ouattara got one back with a header from a 74th minute corner and Bournemouth equalised in stoppage-time when Enes Unal stabbed home to claim his first goal for the club.

Reds cop double injury disaster ahead of PL blockbuster as massive win keeps quadruple alive

Liverpool surged towards the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-1 win away to Sparta Prague on Thursday, as Roma thrashed Brighton 4-0 in the Italian capital.

Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen had to come from 2-0 down to preserve their unbeaten season in a 2-2 draw against Qarabag in Azerbaijan.

Liverpool remain on course to send Jurgen Klopp off with a quadruple of trophies as the Reds were not distracted by Sunday’s mammoth Premier League showdown against Manchester City.

Klopp named a strong side and got what he wanted by killing off the tie in the first leg, even if there was a price to pay in further injury problems as defenders Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate had to be replaced.

Alexis Mac Allister got the visitors off to the perfect start in the Czech capital as he won and converted a penalty after just seven minutes.

Sparta had dumped out Galatasaray in the previous round and created plenty of chances against a makeshift Liverpool defence.

But the difference in quality between the sides showed in the final third. Nunez’s dipping shot from long range outfoxed Peter Jensen to make it 2-0, before the Uruguayan smashed home Mac Allister’s through ball in first-half stoppage time.

Conor Bradley replaced Gomez at half-time and his first act was to fire into the top corner of his own goal one minute into the second half.

But Luis Diaz’s deflected effort quickly restored Liverpool’s three-goal cushion.

Mac Allister and Nunez were withdrawn in the second period with one eye on City’s visit and there was some good news on the injury front for Klopp as Mohamed Salah made his comeback from a hamstring injury as a substitute.

Salah thought he had marked his return with a goal, but a VAR review disallowed his strike for offside.

Instead, it was another substitute Dominik Szoboszlai who fired in the fifth in stoppage time.

    – RUTHLESS ROMA –

Brighton’s first foray into European football looks over at the last-16 stage after the Seagulls were thrashed by in-form Roma.

The Italian giants have only lost once in 10 games since legendary former player Daniele De Rossi replaced the sacked Jose Mourinho in January.

Paulo Dybala was perfectly picked out by Leandro Paredes to open the scoring before Romelu Lukaku pounced on an error by Brighton captain Lewis Dunk to double Roma’s lead before the break.

Gianluca Mancini stretched to meet Stephan El Shaarawy’s cross 25 minutes from time.

El Shaarawy was also the creator for a brilliant team goal finished off by Bryan Cristante to round off a miserable trip for the visitors.

A thumping eighth win in 10 matches for De Rossi since replacing Mourinho in January has Roma all-but in the last eight before next week’s second leg in England.

“All teams have hard periods, it’s not like I’ve done anything special,” said De Rossi to Sky Sport.

“I’m very happy but they’re really good players. They’re winning matches that they should be winning … It’s a good team and it wins matches, I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary.”

Two Brighton fans were stabbed in a robbery the night before the game.

“The only positive thing is that I lost to a friend, imagine how bad it would have been to lose like that to someone I didn’t like,” coach Roberto De Zerbi told reporters.

“I think today will teach something to everyone from the president down … It will help my players because when you have regrets you know exactly what to expect the next time.”

Bayer Leverkusen kept their incredible unbeaten run alive, but need to improve to stay in the competition.Source: AFP

Leverkusen are well on course to win their first-ever Bundesliga title but have work to do to reach the Europa League quarter-finals.

Yassine Benzia blasted into the roof of the net to give Qarabag the lead. A brilliant piece of skill from Juninho to round goalkeeper Matej Kovar and slot home then had the Azeri fans in dreamland just before the break.

Alonso had rested a number of his key players and the Germans improved with a series of changes after the break.

Florian Wirtz was one of those introduced from the bench and his cool chipped finish 20 minutes from time gave the Bundesliga leaders a foothold in the tie.

Patrik Schick then headed home in stoppage time to preserve Leverkusen’s unbeaten record in 35 games in all competitions this season.
