I was Premier League’s youngest-ever player but became an addict working on site

As a teenager, the world was at Matthew Briggs’ feet.

After all, why wouldn’t it have been given he became the youngest-ever Premier League player in May 2007.

    5

Playing against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium, Fulham prodigy Briggs came on in the 77th minute for Mortiz Volz aged just 16 years and 65 days.

It was a record Briggs held until Harvey Elliott came along in May 2019 to make his Premier League debut aged 16 years and 30 days.

The record now belongs to Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri, who debuted aged 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in September 2022.

Unfortunately for Briggs, his career never materialised into the one he and so many would have envisioned when he came off the bench against Middlesbrough.

Speaking to talkSPORT in 2019, Briggs opened up on why things never quite worked out.

“When I look back on my career, 16 years and 65 days, it’s such a young age,” Briggs said.

“And I know everyone’s journey is different and everyone’s story is different.

“But for me, I feel like I got too much, too young and maybe the support system around me wasn’t good enough. Being a young boy, a teenager, and then being thrown in to a man’s game, it’s quite daunting for a young kid. I didn’t really know how to handle it.

“When you’re a young kid, you dream to play at a top level. When you’re actually in that, it’s an unbelievable feeling.

“It’s not just on the pitch. It’s all different types of scenarios that you have to cope with.”

Briggs told talkSPORT about life as a youngster being thrown into men's football

Owing to his status as one of the hottest talents in the game as a teen, it was no surprise an English giant like Manchester United kept tabs on Briggs.

But when Fulham spurned their advances, it wrecked Briggs.

“At the time, Manchester United was interested in me,” Briggs said.

“As a young child, that was my dream, to play for United. As soon as I heard Manchester United were interested in me, I’m like, ‘Right, I want to go.’ I was ready, packed.

“But obviously when Fulham didn’t want me to go and wouldn’t allow me to go, that affected me mentally. I’d become down about it. I let it affect my mood in football, it wasn’t quite at it.

    “Head was gone.”

Matthew Briggs has vowed to establish himself at Fulham this season and wants to sign a new deal at Craven Cottage

Briggs ultimately went on to make just 30 appearances in total for Fulham before he was released after 13 years at Craven Cottage in 2014 and joined Millwall.

Stints at Colchester United, Chesterfield and Barnet followed before things came to a head in 2018.

Speaking to Rising Ballers, Briggs opened up on how he became completely disillusioned with football and the devastating impact it had on his life.

“Nothing was working, lost the hunger for it,” Briggs said.

“I had a lifestyle that I could no longer maintain because of the money I was now earning. It all got too much.

“I just lost myself and I disconnected from friends, I disconnected from family because I feel like I let them down. I couldn’t face anyone, anymore.

Troy Deeney will take inspiration from manager he ‘did not like’ as he reveals three dream locations to coach abroad

“That’s when I turned to drugs, I turned to alcohol just to numb it all. I even was suicidal at one point. I remember being on holiday in Dubai and just thinking about ending it all. Luckily security guards came in and got me down and moved my room to a bottom floor.”

Briggs was thankfully provided with therapy and counselling through the Professional Footballer’s Association (PFA), which helped him to ‘get my mind right’.

So too did a stint working for his uncle on a building site.

When he first moved in with his uncle and aunt, Briggs conceded he would ‘sit with my hood up in the dark.’

“The TV wasn’t even on, I was just sat there doing nothing,” Briggs said.

“After a week, my uncle was like, ‘Matthew, you can’t do this no more. This ain’t healthy, this ain’t good for you. It’s making us feel uncomfortable.’

“He said, ‘You’re not doing this no more, I’m not going to let you sit in here and do this.’”

Briggs’ uncle decided he would bring his nephew to a construction site to do some labouring work for £80 a day.

Being back in the sunlight and around other people helped Briggs to open up to others but, perhaps more importantly, reflect on his career.

“I always say no disrespect to construction, because what they do is brilliant and I learned a lot of life skills doing it,” Briggs said.

“But I remember walking across the building site of a breeze block, pouring with rain. I was holding this breeze block and I was thinking, ‘How have I ended up in this situation?’

“I was the youngest player in the Premier League, dubbed next England captain. Now I’m in a building site carrying a breeze block, not playing for a club, not earning the money I was once on before, and I thought, ‘Nah, this ain’t it.’”

Briggs remains involved with Fulham, the club he joined as a child

Briggs would return to football ahead of the 2018/19 season with eighth-tier side Maldon and Tiptree.

He went on to play in the Danish top tier with Vejle BK and even represented Guyana internationally before his retirement in 2023.

Since he hung up the boots, Briggs became a player care mentor for Fulham and is also an insurance broker.

Premier League midweek fixtures: talkSPORT brings you football bonzana

The Premier League action shows no sign of slowing down, and this week, you can follow EVERY game across the talkSPORT network.

We are straight into gameweek 27 with more midweek matches, and there’s plenty up for grabs as the top-flight approaches the run-in.

    5

The Premier League is serving us a great season

All 10 midweek fixtures will be on our network, bringing you every goal and all of the action as it happens.

And there are some very juicy ties indeed.

On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Manchester City as Spurs look to do the double over the Premier League champions.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men thrashed Pep Guardiola‘s side 4-0 at the Etihad in late 2024 before enduring a terrible run of form.

    Read more on Premier League

However, with a few players back from injury, Spurs have won their last three league fixtures.

Meanwhile, City have slightly improved in recent weeks, but a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday showed just how far away they are from being back to their best.

Still, they are well in the race for Champions League football, and three points here would be huge.

Elsewhere, Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest, knowing that the Tricky Trees can move just three points behind them with a win.

The Gunners’ title challenge for this season is all but over after a 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

Liverpool then beat City to take an 11-point lead over Mikel Arteta‘s men.

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

    5

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

Of course, Arsenal players will insist the title race isn’t over, but it would require an almighty slip-up from Liverpool for this to even be a possibility now.

Instead, the Gunners just have to ensure they claim Champions League football and second place.

Meanwhile, Forest have lost their last two in the Premier League to Fulham and Newcastle, respectively.

But Nuno Espirito Santo will be encouraged by his team’s comeback at St James’ Park at the weekend, where they came from 4-1 down to narrowly lose 4-3.

Certainly, this won’t be an easy game for Arsenal.

Wednesday night also sees Newcastle United visit Anfield in a dress rehearsal of the Carabao Cup final at Wembley next month.

The Reds have one hand on the Premier League trophy now, but Arne Slot will want his side to keep being relentless.

The chance of a treble is there, but the Toon gave Liverpool a very hard game when they met earlier this season.

At St James’ Park, these two served up a thrilling 3-3 draw, and Eddie Howe‘s men will be looking to make a statement ahead of the Carabao Cup final meeting between the two later this month.

On Tuesday, we have Chelsea taking on Southampton, with the Blues looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

There is a south coast derby between Brighton and Bournemouth, which promises to be full of goals.

Wolves are edging away from the relegation places, and they welcome Fulham.

Meanwhile, resurgent Crystal Palace host Aston Villa, with Unai Emery‘s side looking to close the gap on those above them chasing European football.

Wednesday night also sees Manchester United in action against Ipswich Town.

The Red Devils just about salvaged a 2-2 draw against Everton at the weekend, but the performance from Ruben Amorim‘s men was far from convincing.

Certainly, the Tractor Boys will go there feeling they can get something.

And the final game sees Brentford host Everton.

The Bees couldn’t stop winning at home in the first part of the season but are winless in five league matches at the Gtech, while Everton are finding some form under David Moyes.

And on Thursday, Graham Potter will hope to see West Ham build on their brilliant win over Arsenal, while Leicester must bounce back from being thrashed by Brentford.

So, there are plenty of excellent fixtures, and here is how you can follow them all across the talkSPORT network.

  • I was a Premier League striker and cocaine and money laundering ruined my career

I was a Premier League striker and cocaine and money laundering ruined my career

Football is a ruthless and unpredictable business, where aspiring players could see their careers in tatters at any turn – but few end in this much scandal.

Elvis Hammond played Premier League and Championship football for Fulham and Leicester City, but his promising career came crashing not due to a lack of talent on the pitch, but what he did off it.

    3

Hammond was a product of the Fulham AcademyCredit: Getty

It’s estimated less than four per cent of academy players make it to the top level, and even then professionals can be written off by coaches later down the line, or be forced to retire due to injury.

In Hammond’s case, his life as a professional footballer ended in a haze of drugs scandals and money laundering.

Born in Accra, Ghana, Hammond was a product of the Fulham academy having moved to London at a young age, eventually making his first-team debut in 2000.

The striker made 13 appearances for the Cottagers, including 11 in the Premier League, without scoring a goal – spending most of his time at the club gaining experience on loan at Bristol Rovers, Norwich City, and Dutch side RBC Roosendaal, where he scored twice in 15 matches.

In 2005, he joined Leicester City, initially on loan before making the move permanent.

He played for the Foxes until 2008, scoring eight goals in 58 appearances.

After leaving Leicester, Hammond continued his journey through several clubs up and down the English pyramid, including Cheltenham Town, Sutton United, Woking, Farnborough, and Eastbourne Borough.

He earned one international cap for his country, his sole appearance came in a friendly against Mexico on March 1, 2006, a match played in preparation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Hammond did not score any goals in his international career and appeared to end his footballing career at non-league side Kingstonian in 2015, but his journey was anything but free from controversy.

Hammond was given a six-month suspension after he was found to have taken cocaine in September 2003, during his loan spell at Carrow Road.

This troubling information was unearthed in a Channel 4 Dispatches investigation in 2011, which also highlighted former Birmingham City striker Gary O’Connor’s positive test for the drug during the 2009/10 season.

The programme uncovered an apparent cover-up involving both the club and the FA, following former manager Alex McLeish’s claims that the striker was sidelined due to injury.

A secret document disclosed several players had tested positive over the past eight years – one of those names was Hammond.

But the controversy did not end there as, in 2012, Hammond faced a 12-month prison sentence for his involvement in an international money laundering scheme.

He admitted guilt, alongside another accomplice, in illegally transferring £278,532 from Ghana.

This hefty sum was allegedly funneled into a bank account belonging to H & W Enterprise Ltd, touted as a refund for a doomed property deal in Ghana.

Hammond also played for the likes of Cheltenham Town and Woking

    3

According to police, the money was frozen after it was taken from the account of a Ghanaian property development company.

A trail of fraudulent documents later exposed four unauthorised transfers totalling $1.27million to the UK and Cyprus.

In January 2010, shortly before Hammond joined Woking FC, the duo were charged and were due to stand trial.

However, the trial was suspended as Williams and Hammond provided sale contracts and plans showing that Williams’ family had sold land in Ghana.

But detectives again traveled to Ghana and obtained evidence to prove that the documents were false.

Today, Hammond’s current whereabouts are a mystery, suggesting he may have quietly stepped away from the world of football.

Despite a promising start to a once bright career, the shadows of his off-pitch transgressions ultimately proved to be a devastating price to pay.

West Ham eye forward from Premier League rival and look to sell £25m wonderkid

West Ham are actively trying to offload midfielder Luis Guilherme seven months after paying £25million for the Brazilian, talkSPORT understands.

They are also interested in Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz, while Brighton’s Evan Ferguson is Graham Potter’s first choice for the striker’s berth.

    3

The Hammers are in talks with dealmakers in Saudi Arabia about the potential sale of Guilherme, who was signed from Brazilian club Palmeiras at the bequest of under-pressure sporting director Tim Steidten last summer.

West Ham are also open to offers for winger Maxwel Cornet, who has spent the first half of the season on loan at Southampton.

Guilherme is one of a number of Steidten signings who have failed to shine, much like Niklas Fullkrug, who could now be replaced by Fulham’s Muniz with the German now a long-term absentee with an Achilles injury.

The 23-year-old striker has just four goals this season, but has crafted a reputation as a big game player with three of those efforts coming against Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Yet Potter is more keen on Ferguson, who debuted under him at Brighton and now looks like he may be available due to a lack of minutes under Fabian Hurzeler.

Guilherme, meanwhile, has made just six appearances for West Ham’s first team since joining, all of which were as a substitute for 18 minutes or less at the end of matches.

The 18-year-old only debuted for Palmeiras in 2023, recording one goal and two assists across two seasons and 32 matches.

The 2023 Brazilian Serie A champions have become a hotbed for talent, with Real Madrid signing history maker Endrick, Chelsea getting Estevao Willian, and now Manchester City are looking to bring in Vitor Reis.

Yet it appears that West Ham don’t have the patience for Guilherme, which isn’t a good look for Steidten.

As talkSPORT previously reported, German sporting director Steidten is already under pressure for a poor summer window and the decision to hire Julen Lopetegui.

Steidten has come in for criticism over the 2024 summer window

Lopetegui was an expensive dismissal at the start of January as West Ham replaced him with Graham Potter.

And Lopetegui wasn’t the only summer signing unable to shine, with Max Kilman, Crysencio Summerville and Fullkrug all making little impact so far.

Discussing a series of poor management decisions, Hammers legend Tony Cottee didn’t hold back when speaking to talkSPORT.

“I think they should hang their heads in shame; Tim Steidten and David Sullivan and the board because it’s just a pathetic appointment,” he said of the drama over Lopetegui’s departure.

“They should never have done it in the first place. It was just so the wrong appointment.

“You can blame Lopetegui. He’s been poor, he’s made bad decisions tactically, he’s been all over the place, they’ve spent lots of money.

Carlton Cole SLAMS the referee for corner decision as West Ham lose to Aston Villa

“Defensively, God knows how many goals they’ve conceded, but Tim Steidten is the director of football.

“David Sullivan’s in charge of the football side of things. From the board’s point of view, they’ve got to take responsibility. They can’t keep making these stupid mistakes.

“If you’re gonna change the manager and get rid of what was one of the most successful managers in West Ham’s history in terms of winning the trophy, you’ve got to make the right appointment.”

    Bowen boost

Graham Potter believes Jarrod Bowen is ahead of schedule in his return from injury at West Ham.

The Hammers captain suffered a fractured foot in their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the end of 2024.

There were initial fears that Bowen could sidelined for a lengthy period of time, but there appears to be positivity over his recovery.

On Monday, Potter said: “I think if you speak to Jarrod, he will try to tell you he’s ahead of schedule, for sure.

“He’s doing everything he can to get on the pitch as soon as possible. We just need to make sure it’s in a safe way and it’s [in] a good way for him, because we want to get him back and we want him to stay back.

“But you know Jarrod, he wants to be out there, he wants to play and we’re trying to pull the reins on him rather than the other way around. He’s fantastic to have around the place.”

Potter added: “He’s just champing at the bit and he wants to get out and help. But he just has to take his medicine at the moment and just do his rehab properly.

“He was out jogging today with the individual physio, so it’s positive. I think if I’m looking at it now, Jarrod will be ahead of schedule rather than behind schedule.

“It’s not a rocket scientist prediction, that is it really.”

Palmer joins exclusive club but Chelsea create unwanted Premier League history

Cole Palmer once again dazzled on his landmark appearance – but failed to stop Chelsea from creating unwanted Premier League history.

The 22-year-old marked his 50th top-flight start with another wonder goal, but his smile was wiped from his face as Fulham fought back to win their first match at Stamford Bridge since 1979.

    6

Late strikes from Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz stunned the hosts in what was their first goals at Chelsea’s home in seven attempts.

Fulham’s win is just their third win at Stamford Bridge in club history, having won 2-1 and 2-0 in 1964 and 1979 respectively.

Chelsea looked to be on course to close the gap on leaders Liverpool to a point following Palmer’s early opener.

The Chelsea playmaker found the back of the net in the 16th minute with a beautiful effort from outside the box.

Palmer slalomed past Andreas Pereira and Sasa Lukic before coolly slotting into Bernd Leno’s near post to bring up his 12th Premier League goal of the season.

His goal means he has now been directly involved in 52 goals from his opening 50 top-flight starts.

In that time, Palmer has chipped in with 34 goals and 18 assists.

Only his ex-Manchester City teammate Erling Haaland [64] and Manchester United legend Andy Cole [57] have been involved in more goals from their first 50 Premier League starts.

What is even more impressive is that both of those players are strikers.

Whereas Palmer has spent the majority of his career as a No.10, while also operating on the right wing on occasions.

All but three of his 50 Premier League starts has come during his time at Chelsea.

He was named in Pep Guardiola’s XI at City just three times – chipping in with a solitary assist.

Palmer has enjoyed a stunning 2024 so far, where he has been directly involved in 39 Premier League goals.

Incredibly, that is more than what Haaland managed in 2023 [38 goals]

But unfortunately for Palmer, his goal failed to matter following a late collapse in the west London derby.

Wilson popped up with an 82nd minute equaliser after heading home in off the post from inside the six-yard box.

And in the fifth minute of added time, Muniz sent the away fans into pandemonium after firing low into the corner following a blistering counter-attack.

Chelsea can now be leapfrogged by Arsenal into second spot should the Gunners beat Ipswich at the Emirates on Friday night.

Palmer spoke of his disappointment when speaking to Amazon Prime following the match, as he stated results against Fulham is why many pundits have stated Chelsea’s can’t win the league.

He said: “Yeah [it stings]. We were winning for most of the game, but to lose at the end is difficult.

“First half we played well and controlled the game and had quite a few chances. Second half we lost a bit of control.

“They’re a good transition team and like to run direct, we got caught up in their game and paid the price.”

Goalkeeper spotted wearing unusual glove in Premier League clash – here’s why

Aaron Ramsdale was spotted wearing a modified goalkeeper glove in Southampton’s Premier League clash at Fulham.

The 26-year-old returned to the Saints’ starting XI in the league for the first time since November following a spell out with injury.

    2

Ramsdale was seen wearing a four-fingered glove on his left hand as the England international damaged his finger.

He underwent surgery on a suspected fracture and has now made his back into the side with his newly designed attire on show.

The goalkeeper sustained the injury during Southampton’s 2-0 loss at Wolves last month.

Ramsdale was named in the England squad for the November international break but withdrew due to the problem with his finger.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

“Aaron has had an operation on his finger, he’ll hopefully be back this side of Christmas,” former boss Russell Martin said at the time.

Alex McCarthy and Joe Lumley deputised during his absence, with Southampton losing four out of five league matches in that time.

Their £25million signing is now back though and made a quick return to action in the opening half an hour at Fulham.

He pulled off an excellent save with his modified glove to deny Alex Iwobi’s curling effort on goal before it finished 0-0 at half-time.

Neither side were able to break the deadlock by the end of the 90 minutes as Southampton claimed a third draw of the season.

It was their first Premier League match since Martin was sacked after their 5-0 home thrashing to Tottenham.

Juric, who was at Craven Cottage for the draw against Fulham, has agreed to an 18-month deal at the club with a break clause at the end of this season.

    Ivan the Saint

talkSPORT understands that Southampton are set to appoint Ivan Juric as their new manager to replace Russell Martin.

The Croatian is a free agent after he was sacked by Roma in November after a 3-2 loss at home to Bologna, a game in which the club’s ultras walked out of at half time to show their distaste for the boss.

The Saints have long tracked Juric, and he had been under consideration to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl two years ago.

Juric is in England today to speak to Southampton.

He lasted just three months at Roma after he was picked to replace Daniele De Rossi.

If he is to be made the Saints new boss, he will hope to last longer.

    Pressers, pressers, pressers

It’s Friday, which means there are lots of Premier League press conferences.

Arne Slot and Eddie Howe have already been speaking to the media, and we’ll have news from them soon, while later on, Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta will be among those to be speaking to the media.

Of course, there is plenty for Guardiola to talk about after City lost the Manchester derby 2-1, while Arteta will most likely speak about his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final draw against Newcastle and the title race.

We will also hear from new Wolves boss Vitor Pereira.

Another batch of Premier League madness featuring late winners, a red card and title race drama was on display on Saturday.

Five matches up and down the country produced a total of 14 goals, with the hectic festive schedule now well underway.

Arsenal failed to overtake Chelsea as they drew 0-0 with Everton and ten-man Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Fulham.

Newcastle United thrashed Leicester City 4-0 whilst Ipswich Town won their second game of the season with a stoppage-time winner at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The evening kick-off was arguably the best of the lot as Nottingham Forest came from behind and beat Aston Villa 2-1.

With huge results occurring at both the top and bottom of the table, talkSPORT duo Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy reveal their winners and losers from Saturday’s matches on the GameDay Phone-In…

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

    Winners

    Antonee Robinson

Robinson was one of the stars in a Fulham side that took the lead on two occasions against Liverpool at Anfield.

The left-back was tasked with a battle against one of the best players so far this season in Mohamed Salah and emerged as the victor.

Cundy said: “Antonee Robinson, left-back for Fulham. He’s an up and downer with quality…

“He had two assists today, but his all-round performance up against arguably, I mean probably, the best right-hand sided player in the Premier League for many a year, if not the very, very best.”

He added: “I’m talking about the very best right now, Salah, kept him very quiet. I know they go down to ten men, Liverpool, made it that much trickier, but take nothing away from his performance, I thought he was the best player on the pitch.”

    Jacob Murphy and Eddie Howe

Newcastle returned to St. James’ Park in desperate need of three points following a winless run of four matches in the Premier League.

The Magpies excelled against Leicester with their highest score of the season, with Murphy their first and fourth goals of the afternoon.

“Jacob Murphy gets two goals,” Cundy said, before heaping praise on the Newcastle boss. “Eddie Howe, his post-match presser there, he was talking about performances, how they need to be a bit more like that.

“Been a bit frustrating this season for Newcastle but they dispatched a side like Leicester where you should be doing that.

“That doesn’t always happen like that in football, but four flattered Leicester, I mean [Alexander] Isak missed a great one v one by the way, it was a poor finish by his standards.

“It could have been five, could have been six, could have been more, but well done Newcastle, they’re in that clutch in behind the top four at the moment.”

    Jack Taylor

Ipswich have taken a huge step towards climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone with a precious win away at Wolves.

A Matt Doherty own-goal put them ahead in the first half before an unmarked header from Taylor in stoppage-time sealed the deal.

Cundy explained: “Finally, Jack Taylor. Late, late, late, late goal which secures Ipswich [the win], massive.

“All the Tractor Boys heading back down to Suffolk right now will be… It’s one of those games, you know, that’s why you follow football, late winners like that.”

“It’s a free header, it’s a poor defensively conceded goal,” he added. “Take nothing away from Taylor. He’s there, right place, right time, well done Ipswich.”

    Losers

    Andy Robertson and Tony Harrington

Liverpool went down to ten men after just 16 minutes against Fulham after Robertson was dismissed for his tackle on Wilson.

He was adjudged to have denied a goalscoring opportunity, but Cundy believes referee Harrington is also worthy of being a loser this week.

“He’s in there, but [put] Tony Harrington in there mate as well, the ref, mate,” he said.

Robertson's dismissal meant Liverpool had one less player for most of the match

“So Robertson’s out?” asked O’Hara, and Cundy replied: “I don’t know about that mate. I’d like to hear a conversation in a quiet, dark room between the pair of them. Andy Robertson’s gone in there because…

“He got himself in a right mess by the way, it’s a poor tackle from him. Positionally, he’s given the referee a decision to make. [Harry] Wilson does well… I don’t think it’s a red card.

“When you give the ref a decision to make, they sometimes make decisions you don’t want them to make so he’s in but half in, him and Harrington can share it.”

    Gary O’Neil

Wolves boss O’Neil has come under increasing pressure of late as his side have won only twice all season.

Defeat at home to Ipswich leaves them four points adrift of safety and talkSPORT’s GameDay Phone-In hosts have expressed concern over his position as head coach.

“Oh Gaz, Gaz. That’s a terrible result for them, even 1-1 would have been great, a decision will have to be made very soon about that.

“Look, Gary’s been in football all his life, he knows the story, he’s not stupid, he knows what position he’s in, I fear for the safety of him moving forward because they look like they’re doomed at the moment.”

O’Hara said: “I think it might be time just to make a change, and it ain’t because he’s a bad manager…

“I think he’s a brilliant young manager,” Cundy then insisted. “I think he’ll go on to be brilliant. I think we’ll see him in the Premier League for many years to come.”

    Mikel Arteta

Arsenal had to settle for a sixth league draw of the season as they were unable to find a way past the struggling Everton at home.

Set piece goals have worked wonders for them of late but did not make a recurrence on Saturday, with one of Arteta’s substitutions being questioned.

“Got to go in there, bottled it!” former Tottenham man O’Hara shouted.

“People are talking about taking off Rice and [Odegaard], Odegaard’s the one,” said Cundy.

“I get Rice, Jorginho comes on, Jorginho’s a different type of midfielder than Rice, I get that, he’s a bit more creative than Rice.

“The Odegaard thing, the only thing I can think about with Odegaard is that he’s come back from injury about the last month. He’s played a lot of football, he’s been brilliant for them, really, really good, but when you need a goal, you want your top dog.

“Unless there’s a knock, unless we’re doing him a disservice, unless there is a niggle, which it didn’t appear to be the way he came off, I thought that was a very odd decision.”
