Fans joke Chelsea are ‘cursed’ as Lukaku and Aubameyang score Europa League goals

Fans are beginning to think Chelsea are ‘cursed’ as two of their former strikers scored in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Blues have endured a sub-par start to the season under new boss Mauricio Pochettino as they sit 14th in the Premier League.

Chelsea have scored just seven goals in their opening six games of the campaign and have failed to net in their previous two.

Scoring woes at Stamford Bridge are nothing new with Diego Costa, who left in 2017, their most recent prolific striker.

Top attacking talent has been signed since then in the form of Romelu Lukaku and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The former has scored just 15 goals since he re-signed in 2021, whereas the latter netted just three times in his single season.

Both players departed the club in the summer but have not been shy in front of goal for their new teams.

Lukaku scored the winner for Roma, for whom he is playing on loan this season, in their 2-1 victory over Sheriff Tiraspol.

Aubameyang also found the target twice for Marseille on Thursday night in their 3-3 draw with Ajax, and fans think Chelsea could be jinxed.

Taking to X, one said: “If only we had a striker at Chelsea who can score goals.”

“Even Aubameyang is banging goals, Chelsea is the problem!” added another.

A third said: “Chelsea is cursed even Aubameyang just scored a goal.”

Meanwhile, former loanee Joao Felix equalled his goal contributions tally he made during his spell at Stamford Bridge in just 130 minutes at Barcelona earlier this week.

Chelsea signed both Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in the summer with a view to bringing an end to their scoring shortcomings.

However, Jackson has scored just one goal so far this season and the latter is yet to make a competitive appearance due to injury.

Burn scores against former club as Newcastle handed huge boost in Champions League push

Dan Burn powered home a header against former club Brighton with Newcastle looking like they’re going one step closer to Champions League football.

Eddie Howe’s side went into the clash with the Seagulls knowing that a victory would put them four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool with just two games remaining.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side also came into the game with an outside hope of a top four finish, however that appears to be up in smoke after a bright start from the Magpies.

Newcastle took the lead when Deniz Undav scored an own goal following a Kieran Trippier set piece midway through the first half.

It was then Burn’s chance to make himself a hero as he too headed home from a Trippier free-kick to make it 2-0 to the Tynesiders before the half-time break.

A hugely popular figure at St James’ Park, Burn enjoyed his header even more as it came against his former employers Brighton, the club who allowed him to leave in January 2022.

He’s also the first former Brighton player to score against them in the Premier League.

But while Newcastle were delighted to hold a 2-0 lead at the break, they were put to task early in the second half when Undav made up for his earlier own goal with a low effort for Brighton, teeing up a tense second half for both sides.
