  • Patty Mills joins new NBA team in beloved Aussie’s $5m move

Patty Mills joins new NBA team in beloved Aussie’s $5m move

Aussie veteran Patty Mills will return to the NBA for a 16th season after reportedly signing with the Utah Jazz.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Mills, 36, and the Jazz have agreed to a one-year, fully guaranteed $3.3 million deal (AUD $5M) for the 2024/25 season.

It’ll see Mills reunite with coach Will Hardy, who shared six seasons together when Hardy was assistant with the San Antonio Spurs under Greg Poppovich from 2015 to 2021.

Mills spent 10 seasons at the Spurs all up, playing in two NBA Finals and winning the 2014 championship in his most recognised run in the NBA.

His role in the NBA has diminished in recent years including playing a combined 32 games for the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat last season — averaging 4.2 points and shooting under 40 per cent from three-point range for the first time in his career.

But he remains a highly respected locker room veteran who can plug in and play minutes as a dangerous perimeter shooter with a scoring spark, while his leadership will be valuable to a youthful Jazz side.

Mills, who was traded three times last off-season, joins his fifth NBA team after stops at the Portland Trail Blazers, Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, Hawks and Heat.

He’s appeared in a total 892 regular season NBA games.

The beloved Aussie is coming off a productive Olympics campaign for the Boomers, which is expected to be his appearance for the green and gold.

Having consistently ascended his game on the national stage, Mills was ranked second for the Boomers in scoring in Paris, averaging 16.5 points per game with 2.3 triples at 40.9 per cent shooting from the arc.

It includes Mills putting up a game-high 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting in Australia’s 95-90 overtime loss to eventual bronze medallist Serbia in the quarterfinals.

  • LIVE: Goalkeeping howler as South Africa’s fairytale run over, Netherlands book Spain quarter-final

LIVE: Goalkeeping howler as South Africa’s fairytale run over, Netherlands book Spain quarter-final

The Netherlands set up a Women’s World Cup quarter-final with Spain after ending South Africa’s historic run with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.

Jill Roord scored after nine minutes to put the Dutch on their way in Sydney and Lineth Beerensteyn grabbed a second midway through the second half after a goalkeeping error.

With the win Netherlands, who are ranked nine in the world, avoided becoming the latest big-name casualty when they ended 54th-ranked South Africa’s fairytale.

The second goal to Beerensteyn came after a shocking howler from Kaylin Swart, who seemingly had the shot covered only for the ball to slip through her hands.

While the Netherlands won, they will be without Daniëlle van de Donk after she was awarded a yellow card for a challenge on Andile Dlamini.

Van de Donk came into the game with a yellow, so her latest indiscretion means she will miss the next game against Spain.

    USA PREPARE FOR SWEDEN TEST

All eyes will turn to Melbourne later on Sunday when the holders and Sweden battle for the right to face an impressive Japan in the last eight.

After Germany’s group-phase exit, the top-rated Americans and Sweden, third on the FIFA list, are the two highest-ranked teams left standing.

Vlatko Andonovski’s USA have looked unconvincing, squeezing into the knockout phase with a 0-0 draw against debutants Portugal and also being held by the Netherlands.

“The fact we are in, we are lucky, but we are moving on,” said Andonovski. “Now we will do everything possible so that same situation doesn’t happen again. We are doing everything we can to provide success and meet the expectations for everyone.” The United States and Sweden are familiar foes, having met six times before at World Cups, but never in the knockout stages.

The USA won their last World Cup encounter 2-0 in 2019 on their way to the title, but Sweden were 3-0 winners when they last met at the Tokyo Olympics.

Coach Peter Gerhardsson said history will mean nothing when they meet and is confident the underperforming champions can be beaten.

“It’s not something I look at, historical facts, I’m rooted in the present,” he said.

“There are a lot of new players in both line-ups so history is less important.

“(The Olympics) was two years ago, it’s all about the physical and mental shape we are in now,” he added.

“I have great confidence in the squad. We believe in this, believe we can win.”

Japan will be awaiting the winner after another impressive display in defeating Norway 3-1 on Saturday.

Spain — thrashed 4-0 by Japan in the group phase — were also convincing winners as they turfed out Switzerland 5-1.

  • Boomers handed big World Cup boost with kind draw in bid for Giddey-powered medal

Boomers handed big World Cup boost with kind draw in bid for Giddey-powered medal

The Australian Boomers’ FIBA basketball World Cup hopes have received a major boost after being drawn in a favourable pool group.

The Boomers will go in as favourites in Group E alongside Germany, Finland and host nation Japan.

All three pool games will be played in Okinawa, Japan.

Australia also received an advantageous path to the second group phase, should they finish in the top-two.

The Boomers are locked in to face the top two finishers of Group F (Slovenia, Georgia, Venezuela, Cape Verde).

This means Australia could face Luka Doncic’s Slovenia in a quarter-final, which would be a replay of the bronze medal game at the Tokyo Olympics.

However, Slovenia are strong favourites to win Group F and would therefore avoid the Boomers in the second round.

The quarter-final games will also be in Okinawa, Japan.

A decent draw comes as the Boomers will name a formidable team for the World Cup from August 25 to September 10.

The likes of Patty Mills, Josh Giddey, Jock Landale, Josh Green and Joe Ingles all look set to play.

Meanwhile, trans-tasman rivals New Zealand received a horror draw in Group C alongside the USA and Greece.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to the second round.
