IPL 2025: Mohammed Siraj reminisces about a laugh-out-loud welcome by Shubman Gill in Gujarat Titans

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has officially arrived in Ahmedabad to join his new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Gujarat Titans (GT), ahead of IPL 2025. Siraj’s first match for GT will take place on March 25, when GT face Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This opening fixture will be a crucial test for GT as they look to build a strong campaign under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. The franchise, which won the IPL title in 2022 and finished as runners-up in 2023, will be aiming to reclaim the trophy in IPL 2025.

Mohammed Siraj joins Gujarat Titans for IPL 2025

Siraj who was a key figure in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) setup from 2018 to 2024, is now set for a new journey with the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans. Siraj was acquired by GT for a whopping INR 12.25 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, making him one of the biggest signings of the season. The Hyderabad-born speedster will be a crucial part of GT’s bowling attack, which also features Prasidh Krishna, Mohit Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Rashid Khan. Upon his arrival, GT’s social media team welcomed him through their ‘Carversations’ series, where players share their thoughts while traveling from the airport to the team hotel. Siraj shared a hilarious and heartwarming story about his first reaction to being picked by GT, involving his new captain, Gill.

Shubman Gill’s unique welcome for Siraj

Siraj revealed that during the IPL 2025 auction, he was in Australia as part of the Indian squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2025. Gill, who was also a part of that series, was staying in the hotel room right next to Siraj. As soon as Siraj’s name was announced in the auction, Gill couldn’t contain his excitement. However, what followed next was even more amusing.

“Shubman’s room was right next to mine. As soon as my name was announced, he kept knocking. He was telling me, ‘Don’t worry, now you’re definitely coming to GT, don’t stress. When I got picked by GT, he was taking a shower. Towel bandh ke mere paas aaya! (He came to me with just a towel wrapped around him!) He hugged me and said, ‘Welcome to the GT family!,” Siraj said.

This fun interaction highlights the camaraderie between the two Indian stars, as they now gear up to lead Gujarat into the 2025 IPL season.

Siraj’s IPL journey: A new chapter with GT

Siraj has been one of India’s top fast bowlers in recent years, but IPL 2025 marks a fresh start for him, as it will be the first time since 2017 that he will play for a franchise other than RCB.

Here’s a look at Siraj’s IPL career stats so far:

    • Matches Played: 93
    • Wickets Taken: 93
    • Best Figures: 4/21
    • Economy Rate: 8.45

However, Siraj had a challenging IPL 2024 season, struggling with form and consistency, which led RCB to release him ahead of the mega auction. Despite this, Gujarat saw immense potential in his experience and skill set, making a bold move to sign him for INR 12.25 crore. GT’s decision to bring in Siraj is part of their strategy to revamp their fast-bowling unit.

  • IPL 2025: 3 reasons why Rashid Khan can replace Shubman Gill as Gujarat Titans’ captain

IPL 2025: 3 reasons why Rashid Khan can replace Shubman Gill as Gujarat Titans’ captain

The Gujarat Titans (GT) have ignited speculation among franchise fans with a cryptic New Year tweet, hinting at a potential captaincy change ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

The tweet prominently featured Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan, raising the possibility that the celebrated leg-spinner might replace Shubman Gill as the team’s skipper. Shared on the franchise’s official Twitter handle, the post showcased Rashid gazing thoughtfully at a blank slate, accompanied by the caption, “A Clean Slate. A New Story,” This enigmatic message has led to widespread speculation that the Titans might announce a significant overhaul of their leadership structure for the upcoming season.

Speculations rise amid Gujarat Titans’ leadership struggles

While the Titans have not officially confirmed any changes, the timing and content of the tweet have fueled rumors of a possible shakeup. Rashid has been a cornerstone of the franchise since joining in 2022, retained for an impressive INR 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. His consistent performances have made him an invaluable asset, both as a bowler and a potential leader.

On the other hand, Gill, who took over the captaincy in 2024 following Hardik Pandya’s move to Mumbai Indians (MI), faced a tough inaugural year as skipper. Despite Gill’s stellar individual performances, the team struggled to find cohesion, finishing a disappointing eighth on the points table with just five wins from 14 matches. This underwhelming campaign has sparked questions about Gill’s leadership capabilities.

3 reasons why Rashid Khan can replace Shubman Gill as GT’s captain

    1. Proven leadership experience across global T20 leagues

Rashid’s extensive leadership experience in T20 cricket makes him a prime candidate to take over the Titans’ captaincy. The Afghan spinner has successfully led Afghanistan’s national team in international cricket, showcasing his ability to handle high-pressure situations and inspire his teammates. Beyond international cricket, Rashid has been a consistent performer and a key figure in several global T20 leagues, including the Big Bash League (BBL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL).

In these leagues, Rashid has often taken on leadership roles, whether formally or informally, guiding young players and making tactical contributions to the team’s strategy. His exposure to diverse playing conditions and his experience in managing multicultural teams equip him with the skills required to lead Titans effectively. His reputation as a natural leader who leads by example on the field adds weight to the argument that he could successfully transition into a full-time captaincy role in the IPL.

    2. Tactical brilliance and match-winning consistency

Rashid’s cricketing acumen and ability to make decisive on-field calls are unparalleled. As a bowler, Rashid is a master of reading the game, adapting his strategies to outwit batters in real-time. This tactical sharpness is a hallmark of successful captains, and his ability to execute plans effectively makes him a strong contender for the role. Over the years, Rashid has consistently been a match-winner for Titans, not just with the ball but also with the bat in crucial situations, earning the trust of teammates and management alike.

Meanwhile, Gill’s captaincy in 2024 came under scrutiny due to questionable decision-making during crunch moments. In contrast, Rashid’s proven ability to remain calm under pressure and his intuitive understanding of T20 dynamics could rejuvenate the team’s fortunes. His leadership could foster a more aggressive and proactive approach, ensuring the Titans capitalize on key moments during games.

    3. Influence as a senior player and fan favourite

Rashid’s status as a senior player and his immense popularity among fans make him an ideal figurehead for the Titans. Retained for a whopping INR 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, Rashid’s value to the team extends far beyond his performances. His charisma, humility, and work ethic have made him a role model for younger players in the squad. As captain, Rashid could inspire the team to perform cohesively and bring out the best in emerging talents.

Furthermore, his widespread fan following across India and the world could bolster the team’s brand image. With Gill facing criticism for the Titans’ disappointing 2024 season, a leadership change to Rashid could symbolize a fresh start and a renewed sense of purpose. His appointment would also align with the message in the team’s cryptic tweet, emphasizing a “clean slate” and “new story” for the franchise, potentially reinvigorating team morale and fan engagement.

By leveraging Rashid’s leadership skills, tactical brilliance, and influence within the team, the Titans could establish a more cohesive and successful unit under his guidance.

Gujarat Titans to remove Shubman Gill from captaincy? GT’s New Year post featuring Rashid Khan sparks speculation ahead of IPL 2025

A cryptic New Year tweet from Gujarat Titans (GT) has ignited speculation about a potential change in the team’s leadership for the IPL 2025 season. While Shubman Gill is widely expected to continue as captain, the tweet featuring Rashid Khan has fans wondering if the franchise is planning a surprising announcement.

The tweet, posted on the official GT handle, included a photo of Rashid Khan alongside the text, “The 2025 GT Story,” and was captioned, “A Clean Slate. A New Story.” This intriguing post has left fans buzzing with excitement, flooding the comments section with reactions and theories.

    Rashid Khan: A key retention

Adding fuel to the rumours is Rashid’s status as the franchise’s highest retention ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. GT retained the star all-rounder for ₹18 crore, surpassing the ₹16.5 crore paid to retain Gill. Rashid’s immense value to the team, both as a bowler and a leader, makes him a strong candidate for the captaincy.

A season to forget for Gujarat Titans

The speculation comes on the heels of a disappointing 2024 campaign for the Titans. Under Gill’s leadership, GT finished eighth in the standings with just five wins in 14 matches. This marked a sharp decline from their stellar debut in 2022, where they won the IPL title under Hardik Pandya. In 2023, they came close again, finishing as runners-up after a final-over defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

IPL 2025 [Day 1]: Complete list of players sold at the mega auction with their price

The first day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction unfolded with grandeur at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, November 24. With a vast pool of 577 players available for selection, only the top-tier names from the first 12 sets were in focus during the initial phase of the two-day auction. By the end of Day 1, 84 players had gone under the hammer, setting the stage for a high-stakes bidding war between franchises.

Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer shatter records

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant stole the spotlight by becoming the most expensive player in IPL history. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured his services for a staggering INR 27 crore, breaking all previous records. Pant’s explosive batting, leadership potential, and adaptability made him the most sought-after player of the auction, highlighting his immense value in the shortest format.

Before Pant’s record-breaking deal, Shreyas Iyer briefly held the title of the highest-paid player in IPL history. Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquired the stylish middle-order batter for INR 26.75 crore. Known for his ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed, Iyer’s addition brings balance and stability to PBKS’s batting lineup. Reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made headlines by re-signing all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer for a hefty INR amount of over 20 crores. Iyer’s versatility as a hard-hitting batter and a dependable seam-bowling option proved too valuable for KKR to let go. His performances in previous seasons were instrumental in KKR’s success, prompting the franchise to break the bank for him.

Indian bowlers command high prices: Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh

Indian bowlers were in high demand, with Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh each fetching INR 18 crore. Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquired both bowlers, solidifying their bowling lineup. Chahal, the IPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker, and Arshdeep, one of the most promising left-arm pacers in the league, are expected to play crucial roles in PBKS’s title aspirations.

Day 1 of the IPL 2025 auction showcased the growing value of Indian players in the league. High-profile acquisitions like Pant, Iyer, and Iyer underscored the premium franchises are willing to pay for proven performers and game-changers. As the auction progresses, the focus will shift to uncovering hidden gems and finalizing squads for the highly anticipated season ahead.

Fans react as SRH qualifies for IPL 2024 playoffs after rain abandons match against GT

Match 66 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024  between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday (May 16) was washed out due to relentless rain. This washout secured SRH’s place in the IPL 2024 playoffs, making them the third team to qualify after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

    SRH’s IPL 2024 playoffs journey

Before the match between SRH and GT, SRH were fourth in the IPL standings with 14 points from 12 matches. The washout added one point to their tally, bringing it to 15 points from 13 matches. In contrast, GT ended their campaign with 12 points, falling short of the playoff spots. This marks SRH’s first playoff appearance since the 2020 season, having previously finished 8th in 2021, 2022 and 10th in 2023.

    Pat Cummins’ influence

Pat Cummins, the SRH captain, has been pivotal in their turnaround this season. Fresh off title victories in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, Cummins has led SRH with a fearless brand of cricket. His leadership has been credited for revitalizing the team and steering them back into playoff contention.

The fans were treated to a light show and music, celebrating SRH’s progress to the playoffs.

    Implications of the washout

The washout had significant implications for the IPL playoff race. SRH’s qualification almost ended the playoff hopes for Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Meanwhile, Cummins’ team will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 19 at home, with a chance to finish in the top two and secure a spot in Qualifier 1 against table-toppers Kolkata.

    Upcoming virtual knockout

The playoff picture added extra spice to the upcoming clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Bengaluru on Saturday. This match is now effectively a virtual knockout, with both teams vying for a spot in the playoffs. The rain-induced changes have heightened the stakes, promising an exciting end to the league stage of IPL 2024.

Facing the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 63, their hopes were dashed as unrelenting rain led to the abandonment of the game at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This unfortunate turn of events marked the GT’s first-ever exclusion from the playoffs since their IPL inception in 2022.

Despite GT’s earlier aspirations of clinching victories to secure a playoff spot, the abandoned fixture sealed their fate of elimination. With no points gained from the washed-out match against KKR, the Titans found themselves out of contention for the playoffs, a bitter pill to swallow for the franchise and its supporters.

Playoff hopes dashed: Gujarat Titans’ last-ditch efforts in vain

Before the abandoned match, GT were on a precarious path, needing wins in their remaining games to keep their playoff hopes alive. Their recent triumph over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had briefly reignited their optimism. However, the rain-marred encounter against KKR proved to be the final blow to their aspirations.

The abandonment left GT unable to accumulate the necessary points, effectively extinguishing any hopes of a playoff berth. Even if they now emerge victorious in their final league encounter against the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), it would be a mere consolation, as their journey in IPL 2024 have come to an abrupt end.

The road ahead: KKR’s quest for IPL glory

In stark contrast to the GT’s despair, the KKR celebrated a triumphant journey to the playoffs in IPL 2024. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, KKR secured their spot in the playoffs with a resounding victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their previous fixture. With 19 points from 13 matches now, KKR emerged as frontrunners in the tournament, showcasing their dominance and determination.

With Qualifier 1 on the horizon, KKR will aim to maintain their winning streak and assert their dominance in the tournament. Their journey was defined by grit, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As they brace themselves for the challenges ahead, KKR remains resolute in their pursuit of IPL glory, ready to script another chapter of success in their illustrious history.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a resounding nine-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in a one-sided affair of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday. Top-order batters Virat Kohli and Will Jacks were the architects of this dominant win, stitching together an unbeaten 166-run partnership to chase down the target of 201 with a staggering 24 balls to spare.

While Kohli anchored the chase with a well-paced 70 not out, it was the pyrotechnics of Jacks that stole the show. Jacks played the role of aggressor, taking a backseat to Kohli initially before exploding in the later stages. The turning point came in the 11th over, as Jacks unleashed his power-hitting prowess. Mohit Sharma‘s 15th over felt the brunt of his fury, with Jacks amassing 29 runs (2 fours, 3 sixes) from it.

    Will Jacks punished Rashid Khan

However, it was the next over from the wily Rashid Khan that truly etched Jacks’ name in the headlines. In a display of audacious strokeplay, Jacks plundered 29 runs off Rashid, reaching his maiden IPL century in the process. The carnage included a boundary and a staggering four sixes, leaving even the ever-composed Kohli in disbelief.

Sai Sudharsan and Shahrukh Khan shine for RCB

Earlier, Gujarat Titans, after being put in to bat, posted a respectable 200/3 on the board, thanks to fifties from Sai Sudharsan (84 not out) and Shahrukh Khan (58). However, their efforts were overshadowed by the brilliance of RCB’s batting display. With this win, RCB have announced their resurgence, while Jacks has emerged as a player to watch out for in the remaining IPL.
