‘Will not compromise’: Spurs transfer blow heaps pressure on Ange as potential replacements line up

Tottenham are reportedly lining up several possible replacements for Australian manager Ange Postecoglou as chairman Dan Levy hit back at his club’s own fans.

With the international break followed by the FA Cup quarter-finals providing a two-week Premier League hiatus, the British press have been highly focused on what is going on off the pitch.

One of the key stories is Postecoglou’s future with it being no secret that the former Celtic boss is under the pump in north London.

Spurs’ league campaign went down the drain before Christmas and they presently sit 14th on the table with 15 losses from 29 games.

The only reason Postecoglou remains in charge is the allure of silverware.

FA Cup and League Cup runs ended within four days of each other in February, but the Europa League persists as the great white hope to end Tottenham’s highly publicised trophy drought which dates back to 2008.

The first leg of their quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, who are third in the Bundesliga, kicks off at 5am AEST on Friday 11 April with the return bout to be played in Germany a week later.

So while Postecoglou and his squad still have ample time to ramp up their preparations, behind the scenes plans are being made for impending doom.

Levy released a statement on Monday on the club financial situation, which included a thinly veiled way of reading the riot act to the manager he hired in 2023, and revealed that Spurs recorded a £26.2 million loss.

A big hit to the coffers has been the absence of Champions League football with UEFA prize money decreasing from £56.2 million to £1.3 million after Spurs’ absence from Europe during the 2023/24 season.

“As we announce our financial results for the year to 30 June 2024, we currently find ourselves in 14th position in the Premier League, navigating what has been a highly challenging season on the pitch,” Levy said.

“We are, however, in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Winning this competition would see welcome silverware and mean qualification for the Champions League. We must do everything we can to support the team in these final key stages.

“I want to thank everyone who supports us through good times and bad. We are resilient and passionate about our club. We shall aim to finish this season as strongly as we can and continue to build for success on the pitch.”

Watching the likes of Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Fulham and even Bournemouth, who were fifth on the Premier League table before only picking up a single point in their last four games, enter the race for a Champions League berth this season must be a bitter pill for Levy to swallow.

It is well-known that Spurs have suffered an injury crisis this campaign, but as the finances tell us, money talks and that is why Tottenham are looking at other options.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola and Fulham manager Marco Silva are two names that have come up regularly in reports as potential Postecoglou replacements.

The Tottenham hierarchy reportedly admire Spaniard Iraola’s tactical nous and see similarities in style to former Spurs manager Mauricio Pocchettino, who is now in charge of the US men’s national team, but surprisingly said in a recent interview that he would like to comeback to Spurs.

Iraola appears gettable with a reported release clause of £10-11 million, the same as Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim had at Portuguese outfit Sporting CP.

Meanwhile, Silva has impressed at Craven Cottage with the fourth lowest budget in the league.

A trait that is clearly endearing to Levy given he shut down fans calls to pay up during the upcoming summer transfer window to help rejuvenate the squad.

The Tottenham chair has long been ridiculed for his reluctance to match the spending of many of their rivals, despite earlier this year being reported as the ninth richest club in the world behind only Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in England.

Part of Levy’s statement on the finances was very clear that he will not change his ways in the transfer market.

“Since opening our new stadium in April 2019, we have invested over £700 million net in player acquisitions. Recruitment remains a key focus, and we must ensure that we make smart purchases within our financial means,” Levy said.

“I often read calls for us to spend more, given that we are ranked as the ninth-richest club in the world. However, a closer examination of today’s financial figures reveals that such spending must be sustainable in the long term and within our operating revenues.

“Our capacity to generate recurring revenues determines our spending power.

“We cannot spend what we do not have, and we will not compromise the financial stability of this club – indeed, our off-pitch revenues have significantly supplemented the lower football revenues this year, testament to our diversified income strategy.”

Those other revenue streams include hosting concerts and NFL games at their stadium.

But the financial demand for better results on the pitch place even more weight on Postecoglou’s shoulders in the coming weeks.

If they are bundled out of the Europa League, Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi is another reportedly in Spurs’ sights.

But a possible move would be a step down for the Italian given his side are top of Serie A and play a two-leg Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich this month.

The first step for Tottenham however is at Stamford Bridge against London rivals Chelsea on Friday morning Australian time.

The Blues inflicted Postecoglou his first Premier League loss when they smacked Spurs 4-1 but the Australian was still lauded for his commitment to trying to score goals and obtain a result despite being reduced to nine men,

Times have changed massively from that honeymoon period when Spurs sat top of the league ten games into Postecoglou’s reign.

Defeat in the first game back from the international break and Postecoglou will become the first Spurs manager to lose their first four matches against Chelsea.

It is an unwanted slice of history he will be keen to avoid, but most importantly, he will be eager to find form in his squad in that outing as well as hosting cellar dwellers Southampton on Sunday before taking on Eintracht Frankfurt.

For now, the “I always win things in my second year” proclamation remains alive, but the backing he receives is thinning.

‘Laughing stock’… or ‘village idiots’ who can’t hack an Aussie? Making sense of Ange ‘agenda’ claim

The tight rope Ange Postecoglou is walking is getting narrower.

That is to be expected when a big six club like Tottenham sits 14th on the Premier League table almost two-thirds of the way through the season.

This time last week Spurs were still in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League.

    Now, only the latter remains.

The results are not stacking up in the Australian’s favour, but there is an unshakeable feeling among his backers that if he was not an outsider in English football, he might be afforded more rope.

It has been highly publicised that Tottenham have been hit with an injury crisis in recent months.

It was back in December that Postecoglou grumbled “I’m just going to stop answering these questions. If people can’t see the obvious, I’m not going to point it out,” when asked yet another question about what is going wrong after his side were battered by Liverpool 6-2 at home.

Spurs out of FA Cup with loss to Villa | 01:18

Then on Sunday, he called out the English media once again, saying there is an “agenda” against his team.

“There’s got to be a better appreciation for what a very small group of players have been doing for the last two and a half months,” he said.

“It can’t be that people think that’s an excuse. That’s just not anywhere near close to objective analysis. That’s just agenda-driven stuff.

“If it’s to get rid of me that’s fine. Good on ya. Go for it a million times.

“But in terms of this group of players, what they’ve given over the past two and half months has been outstanding, it’s a credit to them, I can’t speak highly enough of them.”

Yet, the questions keep coming despite the most glaring issue being clear for all to see.

Postecoglou has been repeatedly forced to put out a makeshift defence with first choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, centre back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, and left-back Destiny Udogie all spending extended periods on the sidelines.

Further afield, midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma have been regularly unavailable, while their goal scoring stocks have suffered the blows of injuries to Dominic Solanke, Brennan Johnson and James Maddison at various times.

Logically, it is no surprise that the losses have mounted.

Liverpool sink Spurs in run to final | 02:05

Just as they did for Newcastle United last season.

The Magpies lost ten of their first 21 Premier League encounters last campaign.

Undeniably, not good enough for a club with a lot of financial power considering its 80% per cent ownership by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, well-known for funding LIV Golf and spreading their wealth throughout the sporting world in recent years.

But manager Eddie Howe faced nowhere near the level of scrutiny Postecoglou has received.

It was widely accepted that the Englishman, who made his name by taking Bournemouth to the Premier League for the first time, had his hands tied by an injury-riddled squad.

The added pressure of mid-week European competition, Newcastle played in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years, as well as cup fixtures and always demanding league schedule took its toll.

It sounds familiar to Postecoglou’s current predicament.

But unlike in Howe’s case, the English press, pundits, former players and fans have been baying for blood.

And despite sometimes justified criticism of Postecoglou’s polarising tactics, some of the reasons for doing so have not always been fair.

“Spurs’ Australian head coach is the latest target of the village idiots; the half-pint pundits and critics who prefer to laugh at the fact he finishes his sentences with ‘mate’ than listen to him contextualising his team’s problems,” football news correspondent for the UK Telegraph Matt Law wrote.

The mockery unfortunately goes hand-in-hand with the club Postecoglou is at.

Tottenham are repeatedly a laughing stock among rival fans courtesy of the well-documented absence of silverware in their trophy cabinet since 2008.

The regularity with which they sack managers, Postecoglou is their 12th permanent manager this century, is the bud of many jokes.

So too is the behaviour of their fans, who even wanted their own team to lose the penultimate game of last Premier League season at home to Manchester City, which they did 2-0, to deny arch enemies Arsenal the title.

Therefore, of course, when an Australian arrived in north London with tales of how he has won a trophy in his second season with Celtic, Yokohama F. Marinos, the Socceroos, Brisbane Roar and South Melbourne, the punch lines were being written.

Add to that the fact he had shown an unwavering commitment to attacking football, even when times are tough. That was until their last Premier League outing, a 2-0 victory away at Brentford, as a more defensive approach broke a seven-game winless streak in the league.

Spurs sat deeper and gritted their teeth for 90 minutes, showing that they can be more resolute in defence, but Postecoglou is still spoken of as a madman.

There are choruses of laughter in pubs and football clubs across England at Postecoglou’s and Tottenham’s expense, and they have only grown louder in recent days.

Ange denies Tel initially rejected Spurs | 01:11

In the past week, another dismantling by Liverpool, in the form of a 4-0 drubbing at Anfield in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final after leading 1-0 following the first leg, was followed by a 2-1 defeat at Villa Park in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

There is little shame in losing to the Premier League leaders, or Aston Villa have qualified for the Champions League Round of 16, but that did not prevent the pile on.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp was scathing on Sky Sports after the Liverpool loss, saying “I cannot remember a team in my lifetime go down with less of a fight with what Spurs did today”.

“Not having one shot on target in the semi-final of a second leg when you’re trying to change the course of your history?” he added.

Fellow former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara, who has been a very vocal critic of Postecoglou, took to X to call for his sacking.

“It’s time to go now, Ange is out of his depth. [Unai] Emery is on a different planet compared to him and his players bopped us off the park. Should have been five, we’re like reserve team playing in academy games that don’t matter, it’s crazy,” O’Hara wrote.

It did not help things for Postecoglou either that Liverpool great Jamie Carragher opted to rub further salt into Spurs’ wounds.

“It’s Tottenham!” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go and surprise, win against the odds?”

The last few months it must have felt like Postecoglou was being forced to play game after game at a casino where the house always wins.

With the injury crisis, the odds have been massively skewed against them, but the cup competitions kept the hope alive.

Now, only the European dream remains to fulfil the Postecoglou prophecy of winning yet another trophy in his second season in charge of a team.

Spurs finished fourth in the new look league phase of the Europa League with five wins, two draws and a loss to automatically advance to the Round of 16.

Awaiting them will be one of Midtjylland, AZ Alkmaar, Real Sociedad or Galatasaray but arguably more important than the opponent they face, will be the respite Postecoglou’s injury hit squad receive.

Their next European clash is not until March 6 as they will enjoy some much-needed breathing space between matches this month after a manic December and January.

Tension eases as Spurs advance in Europa | 01:57

Spurs played 17 matches across all competitions in that stretch as the casualty ward overflowed.

It was reported by the UK Telegraph on Monday that Postecoglou has implemented a much-needed reset by affording the squad two days off this week to recharge the batteries before facing Manchester United at home in the league on Sunday.

“The boys who are coming back, we’ll get the opportunity to give them a whole week of training, which is great,” Postecoglou said.

“By the time we get to the back end of the week we should have something resembling a squad of players to prepare for a big game. That then folds into the following week when, again, we’ve got seven days and no midweek game to prepare for the next game.

“So that gives us a real good opportunity to get some work into the guys who have been out for quite a while and give some rest to the guys who have been going at it. So by the time we get back to being in Europe and having midweek games we’ll be in a much better shape.”

Postecoglou will be hoping the refresh, along with the possible returns of Vicario, Udogie, Maddison, Johnson and Wilson Odobert will be the morale booster the playing group desperately needs.

Their frustrations came to the fore during the Villa loss on Sunday.

“Spence ripped off his sock tape, threw it on the ground and headed straight down the tunnel with Yves Bissouma at full time,” The Athletic’s Jay Harris wrote.

“Pedro Porro jumped up after being nutmegged and left in a heap on the floor by Marcus Rashford. He then brought Villa’s new striker down with a wild kick on the edge of the box and somehow escaped punishment. The Spain international received a yellow card in the final 10 minutes for a tackle on Ramsey.

“Bentancur was booked for dragging down Rogers. Bergvall jumped into a tackle on Rogers and then clattered into him later on. He eventually picked up a booking for a foul on Ramsey, too.

“These are the moments when Postecoglou needs his senior players, including the captain Son and Dejan Kulusevski, to calm everyone down.”

Jovial Ange jokes before crucial goal | 00:57

If the players can reset, they may be able to claw their way back to the days of Postecoglou’s honeymoon period at Spurs.

The 59-year-old was a breath of fresh air when Tottenham amassed 26 points in his first ten games in charge, a Premier League record, when he took over last season.

Most promising for Postecoglou is that the formula is still there.

“The statistics still tell us this Tottenham team, for all their struggles this season, play a little differently to everyone else. The principles of play that had Postecoglou’s Spurs five points clear at the top of the table early last season remain in place,” Sky Sports’ Adam Bate wrote.

“No team in the Premier League has won the ball high up the pitch more times than Tottenham. No team allows so few passes per defensive action. No team plays with more width than Tottenham. By design, it is supposed to be intense and expansive.”

The numbers are a promising sign that if the medical staff can get most of their stars back on the pitch, the performances may turn quickly.

Who knows what will happen in the Europa League knockouts, but for what it is worth, Howe’s Newcastle won nine and drew four of their final 17 Premier League games last season once the midweek grind subsided.

They finished seventh, and currently sit sixth, two points shy of fourth-placed Chelsea and one of the lucrative Champions League places.

Perhaps if Postecoglou is afforded the leniency of an Englishman, he may have the time to turn things around in a similar fashion.

Who knows, they still have one chance to fulfil his trophy prophecy.

Ange’s frosty run-in with Spurs fan caught on camera as unrest grows over PL ‘madness’

Things are always rosy in Ange Postecoglou’s second year in charge for a football team but Tottenham are proving to be the exception to the rule after a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to newly promoted, and already relegation-threatened, Ipswich Town.

Sunday’s Premier League encounter was billed as a reunion to warm the hearts of Australian football fans between the former Socceroos boss and Ipswich midfielder Massimo Luongo – who was nominated for the Ballon d’Or for his heroics in the 2015 Asian Cup triumph under Postecoglou – but things quickly turned sour.

First half goals to Sammie Szmodics and Liam Delap left Spurs with too great of a mountain to climb and the home supporters expressed their fury as they arrived to the ground confident of a win that would put them into the top four, but watched in horror as their team slid down to 10th.

Tottenham showed signs of life in the second half with a Dominic Solanke goal ruled out by VAR – replays showed the ball touched his wrist – before a Rodrigo Bentancur header in the 69th minute gave them hope of snatching a point.

But Ipswich held firm as the home fans engulfed the stadium in the dying minutes – when Luongo was brought off the bench – and at the full-time whistle with boos.

Already fuming because of his side’s poor showing, Postecoglou even showed his displeasure with one particular fan.

As the Australian walked down the tunnel, he clearly took offence to something that was yelled out at him.

He stopped, eye-balled the perpetrator and then continued walking.

EPL Wrap: Ipswich sink Ange’s Spurs | 02:55

It was the latest incident in what has been a testing relationship with the Spurs faithful.

This time last year everyone had ‘I’m loving big Ange instead’ stuck in their heads, but now the relationship is out of its honeymoon period.

Tensions had been simmering away since Postecoglou slammed the fan base for celebrating their 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City in the penultimate game of last Premier League season because it ensured rivals Arsenal could not win the title.

The 59-year-old said at the time that the club’s “foundations are really fragile” and that flimsiness has been replicated on the pitch in a rollercoaster ride so far this season.

Postecoglou’s hopes of keeping his streak of winning a trophy in his second season are still alive with Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and they have won three of their four Europa League games, while they are yet to play an FA Cup match.

But their Premier League campaign has been underwhelming so far.

As well as Ipswich, they also lost to relegation battlers Crystal Palace but they have teased their potential with a 3-0 thumping of Manchester United at Old Trafford and a 4-1 home demolition of Aston Villa.

They have scored more goals than any than other team in the league but have won five matches, lost five and drawn one.

When they win, they are heaped with praise for their attacking football but when they lose, fans and the UK press pack are quick to grow tired of the inconsistent results.

Former Tottenham midfielder turned pundit Jamie O’Hara told Sky Sports that the tipping point in the relationship between Postecoglou and the Spurs supporter is drawing near as the loss mount up.

“Spurs are all the place at the back. Defenders running all over the place, crossing over, not tracking runners, getting in behind,” O’Hara said.

“You watch it and go, so easy, so easy. That can’t carry on. Eventually the fans will turn. Okay, we like exciting football, but we don’t want to come back from 2-0 down every week.”

Liverpool extend lead on top of table | 00:34

Sunday was the 13th time in 15 Premier League home matches this year that Tottenham have conceded the first goal of the game.

It has created some thrilling comebacks but as Sunday showed, it is often too hard to always be chasing the game.

Football writer for the UK Telegraph, Thom Gibbs, described the loss to Ipswich as a ‘mood-killing muddle’ after wins against Manchester City (in the Carabao Cup) and Aston Villa last week.

Gibbs insisted however that the defeat ‘to an improving side was no disaster’ but that the warning signs are there.

“Often (trailing) seems to spur Spurs into life, like a complacent student who needs more carrot than stick. Replace detentions with being booed off at half-time,” he wrote.

“But you cannot rely on creating peril to rescue yourself forever. Great sides have that ability; the best do not routinely play themselves into trouble.”

Brighton comeback sinks Man City | 00:50

Spurs have conceded 13 goals in 11 games – the same amount as second place City and third place Chelsea but seven more than league leaders Liverpool.

When they have been exposed at the back it has simply been more costly, and Postecoglou’s high line has come under fire as a result.

Lightning fast centre back Micky Van de Ven is out injured, and Radu Dragusin – who is not blessed with the same speed – partnered Christian Romero in the heart of defence against Ipswich as a result.

Football journalist Henry Winter blasted Postecoglou for not adjusting his tactics saying on TalkSport that “it’s madness to play that way when they haven’t got someone was as quick as him (Van de Ven) to get them out of trouble”.

Spurs won’t take Ipswich town lightly | 00:41

Perhaps it is stubbornness, but Postecoglou sticks to his ways because everywhere he has been, he has stayed true to his system.

Australian football fans will recall the three-at-the-back saga which engulfed his World Cup qualifying campaign as Socceroos boss as a perfect example of how he will not relent to the doubters.

He has an inherent belief in his attacking style of football.

He will stay true to that when the Premier League returns in two weeks from an international break.

He knows that the blame lies with him, so there will be slight tweaks within his system, but do not expect Spurs to start parking the bus.

“That’s down to me. That’s my responsibility. The inconsistency we’re having this year, ultimately it comes down to me and my approach and something I need to try and fix and see if I can help the players in that area,” Postecoglou said post-match.

He has put his neck on the line, which means he will be held accountable and this rollercoaster ride has many more twists, turns, and ups-and-downs left in it.

    IS ANGE HONEYMOON OVER?

Whisper it quietly, but is Ange Postecoglou’s honeymoon period at Tottenham over?

A 2-1 loss at home to Aston Villa condemned Tottenham to a third-straight defeat and dropped Postecoglou’s team down to fifth.

It’s a deflating result, especially when Tottenham finished with an xG of 2.09 to Villa’s 1.77.

But there’s no points awarded for winning hypotheticals andThe Telegraph’s Thom Gibbs believes Postecoglou’s task of rebuilding Tottenham grows with each passing game.

“After winning the first three Premier League manager of the month awards available to him, the honeymoon is not just over for Ange Postecoglou and his new partner,” Gibbs wrote.

“Instead they have returned home to mountains of work, argument-inducing admin and a sullen Irish bloke passing judgment on the cleanliness of their house.”

However, it’s worth remembering the options, or lack of, available to Postecoglou at the moment.

Tottenham were missing James Maddison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon, Micky Van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr through injury while Cristian Romero was absent through suspension.

As a result, Postecoglou had to name a team without a specialist defensive midfielder or centre back.

Somehow, he almost managed to pull off the victory against a Villa side that started sluggishly but took over in the second half of a pulsating contest.

MAN UTD HIT THEIR STRIDE AS YOUNG GUNS SHINE

Everton was viewed as a potential banana peel for Manchester United, especially after a hefty 10-point penalty lit a fire underneath the Toffees players and fans.

But the Red Devils struck in the third minute through a wondergoal to Alejandro Garnacho and made Everton pay for some poor finishing, winning 3-0 as Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford both got on the scoresheet.

United are now up to sixth place and in red-hot form – since the start of October, they’ve picked up five wins from their last six games, the best run of any team in the league.

This was their biggest road win in over two years, and remarkably, it is the first time this season they have won a match by more than one goal.

Marcus Rashford’s goal was his first since September and just his second this season in 17 games (all competitions), while Martial picked up his first league goal of the season and just his second in 16 games across all competitions.

With €95 million winger Antony having failed to score at all this season (9 league games, 12 total) – and missing this game with injury – Rashford and Martial finding form in front of goal could be crucial to United’s hopes moving forward.

Bruno Fernandes hinted as much after the game, revealing he gifted Rashford the penalty-taking duties to build his confidence.

“I felt Marcus needed a little bit of confidence, [he] needed his goal,” Fernandes said.

But perhaps the biggest boost was the stunning debut of 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, a standout in pre-season before an unfortunate injury ruled him out until today.

With Casemiro injured until the new year, Mainoo was simply outstanding on his first league start, putting his hand up to replace the Brazilian.

“Mainoo has been Manchester United’s best player by a street,” Manchester United great Gary Neville said on the Gary Neville Podcast. “A brilliant, brilliant Premier League debut from him.”

He added: “The biggest compliment I can pay him, and it hurts to say this is that he looked like a Manchester City player. I was thinking he was someone Pep Guardiola would look at and think he’d want him in his midfield.”

Former Man Utd captain Roy Keane told Sky Sports Mainoo was “Unbelievable.

“We don’t want to get too carried away but I’m sure we will.”

The Red Devils now travel to Galatasaray for a huge Champions League clash, knowing defeat would see them ousted from Europe’s top club competition.

But after a dismal run of injuries and a lack of form in front of goal, the tide appears to have turned – and there’s plenty of reason to believe United can make a charge in both the league and continental competition.

THE ‘CORRECTION’ THAT SPARKED DARK HORSE’S ABSURD TURNAROUND

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery continues to prove he belongs in the upper echelon of European managers.

And it was a crucial tactical tweak from the meticulous Spaniard at half time that proved just as much.

Emery named Ezri Konsa, usually a centre back, at right back which subsequently meant Matty Cash would play slightly higher than his usual defensive position on the right.

However, it didn’t quite work in the first half as Cash picked up a yellow card after a rash challenge on Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur.

The right side of Villa simply didn’t have the same fluidity they enjoyed down the left with Lucas Digne at the back and John McGinn ahead of him.

With Cash at risk of being sent off and forward Moussa Diaby not able to get into the game, Emery switched it up at halftime.

Off came Cash and Diaby, with Leon Bailey and Youri Tielemans coming on.

It proved a masterstroke, as Bailey’s relentless runs coupled with Tielemans’ intricate passing laid the platform for Villa to assert control in the second half.

In fact, it was a silky no-look pass from Tielemans that slipped Ollie Watkins in between Tottenham’s centre back duo before he slotted home the winner in the 61st minute.

So, what was the exact reasoning behind Emery’s decision to make the game-changing double substitution at half time?

“We were struggling on the right side and tactically it was my correction,” Emery said in his post-match press conference.

“I needed to make a decision to correct it. Offensively as well, we weren’t attacking on the right like we were on the left. Cash was a risk on a yellow card, and the solution was Leon Bailey and Youri Tielemans, trying to get two players different.

“One did the passes and the other for the running. They did it.”

And that they did, as Villa now sit just two points off top spot and have the equal second-most goals scored in the league.

In fact, Emery’s troops ended the day in the top four at least 13 games into a Premier League season for the first time since December 27 2009.

Now that a third of the season has passed, the key question surrounding Villa will be if they can sustain their form throughout the congested festive season and come out the other side without any major injuries.

But so far, Emery and his band of Champions League hopefuls are proving themselves worthy of a spot amongst Europe’s elite next season.

HOW ‘WORLD CLASS’ REDS STAR COULD SHAKE UP TITLE RACE

Has Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool proved we might have a title race on our hands?

Pep Guardiola’s side failed to hold on to their lead as Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold popped up in the 80th minute to score the equaliser.

The draw between the two heavyweights allowed Arsenal to go one point clear at the top after a gritty 1-0 win away to Brentford.

In fact, there’s just two points separating Arsenal from fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Each of those four teams have players that can swing the contest in their favour.

The likes of Bukayo Saka, Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins all spring to mind, but there’s a different Liverpool player who could have an even bigger say.

It’s Alexander-Arnold, who continues to impress in his hybrid role as a right back and a central midfielder.

The England international already had the tall ask of shackling electric City winger Jeremy Doku but his impact in midfield proved pivotal.

Just how far Alexander-Arnold can propel Liverpool in his unique role is anyone’s guess, but when Premier League great Gary Neville likens him to one of the best centre mids in the game, it could be the difference between winning the title.

“Man City have (Kevin) De Bruyne injured, who is world class in terms of delivery, striking of the ball and passing,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

“Trent is the equal of him, and he’s a right back. Not a traditional right back, but that’s where he plays.

“He keeps going, his performances are out of this world. He’s playing central midfield for 50-60 per cent of the game, he’s going forward and scoring goals and achieving numbers that right midfield or right wingers don’t achieve.”

Likening Alexander-Arnold to De Bruyne is a big stretch from Neville but at age 25, time is on the Liverpool star’s side to truly rebrand himself as a dominant centre midfielder.

The ‘honeymoon is over’ for Ange and Spurs… but he can’t afford to blink — UK View

After an undefeated ten-game stretch, Postecoglou and Tottenham have been brought crashing back down to earth.

A 2-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa condemned Tottenham to a third-straight loss as they tumbled out of the top four.

It was a frenetic contest in which Heung-Min Son could have bagged a hat-trick, if not for the off-side flag.

In fact, Tottenham will have felt hard done by to not even have scored until the 22nd minute, peppering Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez with five shots in the opening few minutes.

Even then, Giovani Lo Celso’s thumping strike needed a slight deflection off of Villa defender Diego Carlos to beat Martinez.

Yet a patched-up Tottenham team were left to rue their inability to convert their chances, as Villa equalised on the stroke of halftime through Pau Torres before Ollie Watkins scored the winner in the 61st minute.

Patched-up is perhaps an understatement, too.

Tottenham were missing James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Ryan Sesegnon, Manor Solomon, Micky Van de Ven and Pape Matar Sarr through injury while Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma were absent through suspension.

Postecoglou ultimately named a starting team without specialist centre backs or defensive midfielders, as Emerson Royal and Ben Davies started at the heart of the defence while Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo Bentancur were deployed in midfield.

One may argue if Postecoglou had a full squad to choose from, they might have won this game.

Even without them, Tottenham still managed to edge the xG (expected goals) battle 2.09 to Villa’s 1.77.

Despite the defeat, Postecoglou remained optimistic and insisted he “couldn’t be happier” with how Tottenham played.

“I thought we played some fantastic football and on another day we’d have probably won the game comfortably,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports.

“I can’t fault the effort, the intent and everything they put into the game.

“There’s no frustration. We played well and as a manager that’s all you can ask for.

“Sometimes the outcomes don’t go the way you want but as a manager, you’re looking for how the players are committed to what we’re trying to do and they were totally committed to it today.”

Although the commitment might have been there, the quality simply was not and it’s contributed to Tottenham sliding down the table.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane slammed the defending from Tottenham for Watkins’ winner, as Davies moved to cover empty space and allowed the Villa striker plenty of space to dash in behind and fire home.

“Really poor defending from Spurs,” Keane told Sky Sports.

“You’ve got to get tight and be aggressive, they’ve just switched off at the wrong time.

“Lovely goal from Villa but defensively from Spurs … really Spursy.”

So, with three defeats on the bounce and a daunting trip to Manchester City ahead of them, is it time to declare Postecoglou’s honeymoon period over?

According to The Telegraph’s Thom Gibbs, it most certainly is.

The defeat also sparked concerns as to whether Postecoglou’s all-action approach is sustainable, even without so many starters out with injury.

But The Athletic’s Tim Spiers believed Postecoglou simply cannot and will not abandon his principles now because Tottenham will be “in trouble” if he does.

Instead, the game served as further evidence of how big a rebuild Postecoglou has on his hands.

“If third choice centre-back Eric Dier isn’t deemed good enough to get in this defence, it’s clear that Postecoglou has nowhere near the squad that he wants, which isn’t a surprise given he only took over in the summer,” Spiers wrote.

“It’s been a disappointing few weeks for Spurs and it might not get better anytime soon with Manchester City away next weekend.

“But some perspective as to where they are in the Postecoglou era is required. It’s still very early days.”

Barring a miracle, Maddison, Van de Ven and Sessegnon are not expected to return until 2024 while Perisic is gone for the season.

It could mean darker days are not far away for Postecoglou but, as Spiers was at pains to point out, his revolution will take time and things could get worse before they get better.

But after the visit to Manchester City, Tottenham have a favourable run of fixtures to round out the year: West Ham United (h), Newcastle (h), Nottingham Forest (a), Everton (h) and Brighton (a).

By then, Postecoglou will hope to have a number of his key men back in training as he looks to keep Tottenham in the hunt for a spot in Europe next season.

And if the Aussie can have Tottenham performing as well as they did against Villa despite fielding a makeshift backline and midfield, they’ll have plenty of rivals worried when they’re back at full strength, whenever that may be.
