Wild stat behind Ange’s drastic rebuild as big rule change could decide Spurs’ fate

When Ange Postecoglou took over at Tottenham before the Premier League season kicked off, the appointment was met with surprise and even dismay in some quarters – from those who have not followed his career, at least.

The big question was simple: How far could he – and his bold tactical approach – take the team in his maiden campaign in the world’s top league?

Postecoglou exceeded all expectations with a 10-match unbeaten run to send them top of the table early in the campaign, playing a blinding brand of attacking football.

The Australian won Premier League manager of the month in each of August, September and October. Then injuries and suspension decimated Spurs, who lost four of their next five matches.

Postecoglou steadied the ship and has lost just once in their seven matches – even with a couple of key players at the Africa Cup of Nations or, like South Korea’s Son Heung-Min, at the Asian Cup for a month.

Tottenham currently sit fifth on 44 points, with 13 wins, five draws and five defeats.

To put that into perspective, that tally through 23 rounds would be good enough to comfortably sit in the top four in every season going back to 2018/19 (when, coincidentally, they finished fourth in the last full season under Mauricio Pochettino).

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Ange at Spurs – but he’s laying the foundations for long-term success.Source: AFP

It’s fair to say that they’ve confounded the critics so far. That’s especially true considering the club’s talismanic captain Harry Kane, who had scored at least 20 goals in each of his last nine seasons, was sold before the season kicked off.

But Kane’s departure may have proved a blessing in disguise for Postecoglou. Firstly, it provided him with funds to splash in the transfer market. Kane was sold to Bayern Munich for a German-record €100m plus €10m in bonuses. Postecoglou used that to sign winger Brennan Johnson (22) and James Maddison (26) for almost exactly the amount Kane earned the club – then made another seven signings.

Of the nine permanent arrivals, just two were aged over 25: Maddison and goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario (also 26).

And besides Kane (30), he allowed three other players to leave on permanent deals – 30-year-old Lucas Moura, and 27-year-old duo Harry Winks and Davinson Sanchez. 27-year-old Tanguy Ndombele was sent on loan, as was 26-year-old Sergio Reguilon (all ages above are at the time of the deal).

It was a drastic reshaping of the side with the future firmly in mind.

Despite having his season hampered by injury, Maddison has been an excellent signing so far.Source: Getty Images

Tottenham’s average age of the starting XI (across every match) last season was 27.5 years old, while the average age of the entire squad was 27.1 – the fourth-oldest in the competition.

This time around, the average age of the starting XI is just 24.9, with the entire squad averaging 25.3 years old – the fourth-youngest in the competition.

In Spurs’ last match (2-2 against Everton), all of the substitutes were aged 21 to 23 years old.

The starting XI for that match included seven players who have arrived at Spurs this season.

The oldest player in the team, 28-year-old Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, is an outlier – and Postecoglou had him up for sale in January only for the player to reject an exit. Tottenham were reportedly hoping to replace him with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, who turned 24 this week.

Compare that to the top of the table clash between Arsenal and Liverpool on the weekend, where the teams fielded a combined total of five signings from this season in the 22 men who took to the field for kick-off.

Manchester City, as another example, started just one new signing in their 3-1 win over Brentford: 22-year-old left back Josko Gvardiol.

Postecoglou has not only signed a host of young players, but entrusted them to play regular minutes.

And in the January transfer window, he took the process a step further – being far more active than any of his top-half rivals.

Out the door went the likes of 37-year-old gloveman Hugo Lloris, 34-year-old Ivan Perisic, and 29-year-old Eric Dier. In came 21-year-old centre-back Radu Dragusin, with Spurs beating plenty of rival interest to land the talented youngster.

In a massive boost for the future, Spurs also won the race for 18-year-old Swedish midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who turned down Barcelona to join Postecoglou’s side at the end of the season.

There was also one of the most surprising deals of the window: a loan deal for 27-year-old striker Timo Werner with an option to buy at the end of the season for around £15m. The German was a flop at Chelsea before returning to RB Leipzig, having been all-but written off in England.

Werner managed 10 Premier League goals in 56 appearances for the Blues.

Postecoglou has never shied away from bold transfer moves – like at Celtic, where he raided Japan for a series of players after his successful stint coaching Yokohama F. Marinos in the J-League.

He also has a strong record of helping maligned players to discover top form, something he has demonstrated this season with the resurgence of Richarlison.

The Brazilian striker scored just one Premier League goal in his first season at Tottenham, but has already bagged 10 under Postecoglou this campaign – just three behind his best-ever haul at Everton.

If he continues scoring at his current rate, he’ll easily reach personal-best figures by the end of the season.

And if Postecoglou can get the most out of Werner, it could be another Ange act of genius.

THE BIG CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CHANGE THAT COULD DEFINE SEASON

Now, the January transfer window has closed and the Premier League finish line is beginning to loom.

Spurs are fifth, seven points off title leaders Liverpool (51 points) with 15 games to play. Reigning champions Manchester City are second but have a game in hand and could leapfrog the Reds, while Arsenal are currently third – also on 49 points.

That trio appear poised for a gripping title race. One spot further back is Aston Villa (46 points) in fourth, ahead of Tottenham (44), Manchester United (38) and West Ham (36).

While Villa still hold out hope of a late-season title charge, it’s more likely that Unai Emery’s men will be targeting a top-four finish – and the all-important boon of Champions League qualification.

Having been dumped out of the FA Cup and League Cup, Tottenham’s hopes of ending their long silverware drought this season rest on claiming an unlikely Premier League crown. But like Villa, qualifying for the Champions League is the desperately-sought aim in the final 14 rounds.

Qatar through to Asian Cup Final | 01:35

But next season the Champions League will look very different, and it could have a huge impact on Spurs.

The Champions League will adopt the so-called Swiss Model, which means four more teams will now compete (36 in all).

The two leagues whose clubs perform best in European competitions this season (across the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League) will each get one additional place next year.

Had the rule been in place for this season, Liverpool and Atalanta would have qualified for the group stage – both teams having finished fifth in their respective leagues last campaign.

So instead of the top four teams on the league ladders from England, Spain, Germany, France and Italy all qualifying, two of those nations will instead have FIVE teams automatically qualify – based on which nation’s teams do the best in Europe this year.

For Premier League fans (and indeed Tottenham fans) there’s room for optimism since England has finished in the top two nations in Europe in six of the last seven seasons.

Sometimes, the coefficient points (aka the ranking of each country) are so close that the top two nations are decided by the result of the final. In 2019-20, the Premier League finished third in the coefficient points only because of Bayern Munich beating PSG 1-0 in the final – meaning Germany leapfrogged England.

This raises the spectre of Spurs finishing fifth and relying on a Premier League rival, such as their North London neighbours Arsenal, to win the Champions League final in order for Postecoglou’s men to qualify.

That would truly be a day of mixed emotions for the Spurs faithful.

SON RETURNS AHEAD OF BRUTAL RUN HOME

For now, however, Postecoglou is focused on the task at hand – getting back to winning ways, having won just one of four matches while Son has been absent at the Asian Cup.

The South Korean star decided to fly straight back to England once his team was knocked out of that tournament and could feature against Brighton on Sunday morning (2am AEDT).

Postecoglou will be hoping his star man can hit the ground running and show the kind of form he demonstrated against the Socceroos, having won a late penalty before scoring an excellent extra-time free kick to eliminate Australia in the quarterfinal.

Having exceeded all expectations to this point of the season, and having arguably won the January transfer window with their bold actions, Postecoglou is well-poised for a late Premier League charge.

But finishing in the top four and sealing the major financial and reputational boost of Champions League qualification won’t be easy – especially since Spurs have a brutal four-game run of games to look forward to from mid-April.

They face Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool in consecutive matches before finishing their season against Burnley and Sheffield United.

That four-game run could make or break Spurs season. But even if they do miss the top four (or five) and Champions League qualification, Postecoglou has proven his brand of football can cut it in the league – and he’s laid the groundwork for long-term success.

  • Ange hands transfer wishlist to Spurs amid mounting crisis … but expects ‘nothing magical’

Ange hands transfer wishlist to Spurs amid mounting crisis … but expects ‘nothing magical’

Ange Postecoglou admits “nothing magical” will happen in the January transfer window to help injury-hit Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s depleted side crashed to a 4-2 defeat at Brighton in the Premier League on Thursday.

Nine players were unavailable to the Tottenham boss and, after Sunday’s clash with Bournemouth, he will lose Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr and Son Heung-min for January due to the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup.

However, Postecoglou tried to quash assumptions he will herald the new year with a flurry of transfer activity.

“Nothing magical is going to happen in the January window,” Postecoglou said.

“What we need to do is just keep building. We’ve had one window with this team to change it around, to do things differently.

“The fact that we’re in the (fifth) position we are is a credit to the players. For all the challenges we’ve had, we just kept ploughing forward and that’s what we’ll do.

“We’ll see what we can do in January, but ultimately it’s about building a side that will get us to where we want to.”

Despite Postecoglou’s claims, The Telegraph reports the Australian has informed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy of the three positions in the team he needs strengthening in.

Unsurprisingly one of those is at centre back, a position Tottenham have been decimated in through injuries and suspensions at various intervals this season.

Additionally, Postecoglou is hoping for some help in central midfield as well as a winger.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, but the report claims the French club will look to hold onto him for the rest of the season.

Instead, The Telegraph reports Tottenham are eyeing up a move for Romanian centre back Radu Dragusin.

After spending last season on loan at Genoa, the 21-year-old made the permanent switch at the start of the 2023/24 campaign so he will not come cheap.

As for a new winger, Postecoglou appears likely to reunite with former Celtic winger Jota.

Jota moved from the Hoops to Saudi club Al-Ittihad in the summer but his move has not gone to plan and will be desperate for game time.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is another name that could move to Tottenham in January amid the Blues’ need to balance the books to comply with FFP regulations.

However, The Telegraph claims Chelsea are unlikely to budge from their £50 million ($AUD93 million) valuation of Gallagher, a figure Tottenham are not keen to pay.

But that could change should defensive midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg depart Tottenham in January, with the Dane linked with a switch to Italian giants Juventus.

    ‘I AM BACK!’: Rocket sinks Ange’s men | 00:43

Tottenham’s long list of absentees means Postecoglou has used 27 players in all competitions this season.

As a result, their early title bid has taken a blow, with the north Londoners presently in fifth place, six points behind leaders Liverpool.

“We’re still at the beginning. Within that context, we want to compete. We’ve got ourselves in a position where we can compete. That’s what we need to keep pushing forward for,” Postecoglou said.

“For us to sustain and maintain that and be a team, it’s no secret we need a strong squad.” Hugo Lloris’ departure from Tottenham is set to be finalised shortly, with the French goalkeeper close to agreeing a move to Los Angeles FC on a free transfer.

“Obviously there’s stuff happening but I’ve been focused on the game. I’m sure we’ll hear something in the next couple of days,” Postecoglou said.

Spurs to allow exiled star Hugo Lloris to join MLS club LA FC on a free transfer

Tottenham are allowing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to join MLS side Los Angeles FC on a free transfer, talkSPORT understands.

Lloris has played 361 Premier League games for Spurs over 11 years since he signed from Lyon for £11m in 2012.

    2

However the former France international lost both his spot as Spurs’ no.1 goalkeeper and the captain’s armband ahead of this season.

Summer signing Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster are now first and second choice respectively under new manager Ange Postecoglou, whilst Heung-min Son has been appointed skipper.

Now, Lloris is in talks with Los Angeles FC – the club that Gareth Bale retired at.

His current deal with Spurs expires in June 2024.

Lloris hasn’t played any minutes for the north London outfit this term. He stated in the summer that he wanted to move on to another club, but no deal materialised.

He also retired from international football at the start of the year.

The goalkeeper, who turned 37 on Boxing Day, had been a hit at Spurs.

He’s made 444 appearances for the club, including the 2019 Champions League final defeat to Liverpool.

He won the 2018 World Cup with France and played in the 2022 World Cup final loss against Argentina during his time at Spurs, too.

Discussing the goalkeeper’s future recently, Postecoglou said: “[His future] is not my decision. It’s a decision for Hugo and the club. I don’t have that power and don’t want that power.

Spurs fan believes Tottenham players need more discipline following continuous suspensions

“Hugo is a member of this squad and how he trains every day is important to me. If he wasn’t then I’d be dealing with it but I haven’t had to, he has been absolutely first-class.

“As a manager, I don’t take that for granted because that could be a problem for me. For most managers, it is the ones who aren’t playing who give you the biggest headaches. It’s his decision to make.”

Rumour Mill: Tottenham’s transfer ‘reality’ and those who could be on the move; City’s $130m splash

Ange Postecoglou admitted before last week’s game against Manchester United that his playing group is “too big as is” and that the “focus” would be on “trimming the squad down”.

That is proving somewhat tricky though, with the future of three players in particular still under a cloud.

Starting with Hugo Lloris, The Athletic reported last week that Lazio and Tottenham are in talks about a potential deal but there is a key stumbling block.

Lazio is after a free transfer while Spurs want a small fee while also complicating matters is the fact Lloris himself does not want to be the second option at goalkeeper, per The Athletic.

Of course, at Lazio that would be the reality given he would be playing behind last season’s Serie A goalkeeper of the year Ivan Provedel.

Ange claims first EPL win against United | 02:46

“I’m not really across it,” Postecoglou said last week when asked about Lloris’ future.

“With the outgoings I have very little control over it. My focus has to be on what’s in front of us and who’s training. I’m assuming that as we get closer to the end of the window everything will accelerate.”

It has been a similarly frustrating process when it comes to Tanguy Ndombele, with the French international another name to monitor before the end of the transfer window.

Ligue 1 side Rennes are said to be interested in signing the midfielder on loan while there has also been interest from Turkey.

Ndombele though apparently has no interest in playing there while the Spurs are said to want between €15m ($A25m) and €20m ($A34m) for the 26-year-old according to The Athletic.

Put simply, a resolution does not seem close for Ndombele, who signed with Spurs on a club-record £55.4 million ($A110m) fee in the summer of 2019.

“Spurs don’t want him, with Postecoglou unimpressed with his timekeeping and general attitude and application, but no interested club has yet been able to come up with a good enough offer,” The Athletic report claimed.

Then there is Eric Dier, with The Athletic again reporting his future at Tottenham “remains in the balance”.

Spurs are said to be “keen” to move him on before the deadline given his contract runs out next summer.

But, as is the case with Lloris and Ndombele, there is a point of contention between club and player. On this occasion, Dier is said to prefer a move for free next June.

Dier is yet to be included in any of Postecoglou’s squads this season, although the Australian played down that fact when asked about the 29-year-old’s future last week.

“Eric is part of this team. We left a few out,” Postecoglou said.

“We left some players on the bench that are very good players. We need a strong squad, it’s not about 11 players.

“Eric is in the same boat as all the other boys. He’s working hard in training and available for selection.

“My decisions then are what I think will give us the best chance of success for any given game and then we reassess the week after. Nothing really unusual there.”

Mac Allister shown RED on Anfield debut | 00:37

The Athletic though reports it is more complicated than that, claiming Dier has three options — “leave now on a permanent deal, move on loan until the end of the season or stay and fight for his place”.

A permanent transfer is “unlikely” according to the report, although Dier is said to be open to a loan if it is the right move for him. Dier has also previously said he is prepared to fight for his place under Postecoglou.

Postecoglou was asked about the team’s broader transfer plans last week, revealing the priority is on “trimming the squad down”.

“The reality of it is we can’t just keep acquiring players,” he said.

“We’ve got too big a squad as it is. It affects the training, the players themselves because they all want to play and be involved.

“It’s not so much one has to happen for the other but our focus at the moment is trimming the squad down and seeing where that takes us in terms of reinforcements.

“We’re assessing that on a daily basis. There’s still two weeks to go in the window and I’m sure you’ll see some movement.”

Meanwhile, although there is a glaring hole left up front by the departure of Harry Kane, Postecoglou said the club is not “necessarily” prioritising filling that void first.

“I know that’s the obvious place people look at because of recent outgoings but we’d been planning for that for a while,” he said.

“There’s still areas we can strengthen in all our lines: defensively, midfield, up front. Again that’s not just bringing players in for the sake of it. They have to fit the profile we’re looking at.

“We’ve purposefully gone a bit younger because we want to build a team here. It’s not about putting the finishing touches on something, we’re building something here. So that’s the mind of profiles we’re looking at.”

While there is plenty of discussion surrounding who could be out the door at Tottenham, one player who is staying put is Pape Matar Sarr.

Sarr, who scored in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester United, was a man in demand over the summer according to prominent transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.

“Tottenham received more than four approaches this summer for Pape Matar Sarr. Despite strong interest in talented midfielder, club considered him untouchable since day one,” Romano tweeted.

“Ange Postecoglou rates Sarr as top talent and didn’t want to give green light to loan deal.”

MAN CITY SET FOR $130M SPLASH… BUT LOSE PLAYER TO SAUDI

Elsewhere, multiple outlets are reporting that Manchester City has agreed to a €65m ($A130m) deal to sign Rennes winger Jeremy Doku.

Doku will fill a clear need at City, who have been looking to bolster their attacking starts after the departure of Riyad Mahrez to Saudi Arabian team Al-Ahli last month.

The transfer is pending a medical examination later in the week but a verbal agreement is in place according to Romano.

There is potentially more movement at City too with defender Aymeric Laporte set to depart for Al Nassr.

Sky Sports claims the two teams have agreed to a three-year deal worth £25 million ($A50m) for Laporte, who will now undergo a medical to complete the move.

Welcome to Spurs: Ange’s ‘crash course’ in PL chaos and the silver lining to Kane exit

In Ange Postecoglou’s first pre-season as a Premier League manager, he’s already faced several challenges he could have done without.

The chief headache; the seemingly-imminent loss of his best player. The London club accepted a bid of $AUD168 million from Bayern Munich for superstar striker Harry Kane on Thursday (AEST) with the striker’s switch on the verge of being made official.

There have been many other, more minor, setbacks. Wet weather forced Tottenham’s friendly against Leicester City in Thailand to be called off while Roma also pulled out of a pre-season clash, robbing Postecoglou of vital game time to drill his methods into his players.

Off the field, Tottenham owner Joe Lewis was charged with insider trading in the United States, adding yet another unneeded distraction for Postecoglou in what is his most important pre-season to date.

As the Daily Mail’s Matt Barlow pointed out, Lewis’ charges were the latest instalment in what many would describe as a very ‘Spurs-y’ welcome for Postecoglou.

“So here was one more cloud of uncertainty drifting across Postecoglou’s horizon since his arrival,” Barlow wrote.

“One he had no right to have expected. One more lesson in what has become a crash course in the perils of managing Tottenham.

    “Things rarely go smoothly.”

Despite the uphill battles Postecoglou has already faced, there are early signs of promise his tenure at Tottenham could blossom into something brilliant.

He has seen an improvement from several players who struggled under his predecessors and a scintillating passage of play in a friendly shows the team have bought into his methods.

A lot has to go right for Postecoglou to succeed at a club where even some of modern football’s greatest managers have failed.

Yet the 57-year-old has proved all throughout his career that this is the environment in which he thrives.

‘Get me out of here’: Dire warning as PL coach quits days before start of new season

THE UNWANTED SIDESHOW THAT COULD DERAIL SEASON BEFORE IT HAS BEGUN

It’s startling to think how low Spurs could have finished last season if it wasn’t for Kane.

The England captain contributed 30 league goals, the equal-most he has scored in a single Premier League season and 42.9 per cent of Tottenham’s total goals scored.

He also eclipsed Jimmy Greaves’ club record for most goals scored by a Tottenham player.

Safe to say, Kane has done it all for Tottenham except for one glaring, shiny, glorious exception: win a trophy.

Kane has been on the losing side of a final with Tottenham on three occasions: the Carabao Cup in 2014/15 and 2020/21 as well as the Champions League in 2018/19.

It is evident Kane desperately wants to win silverware with Tottenham but with one year remaining on his deal, he has arrived at a critical juncture in his career.

As it stands, Kane is leaning towards an exit after Tottenham accepted Bayern Munich’s bid.

Initial reports claimed the talisman was hesitant about leaving but the lure of silverware and guaranteed Champions League football may have proved too strong to turn down.

For Postecoglou, the fact this saga has dragged on until the eve of the season must have made it a frustrating sideshow.

But if Kane leaves, could it mean the expectations are slightly lowered and Postecoglou earns himself a little more time in one of the most cutthroat leagues in the world?

According to The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, it might add on a few more weeks to the Aussie’s grace period.

“I can definitely see for Postecoglou there is a sense that he could start the rebuild and there might be a bit more patience,” Eccleshare told the Fox Football Podcast.

“I think the problem with the whole Kane situation is that if he does stay, which is obviously good, but then it’s going to be a bit of a cloud next season.

“So in some ways, it might be better for the sake of the rebuild to do it and then Postecoglou has a bit more time.

“I think there would be more of an acceptance that things would take a little while if you just sold the best player.”

There will be plenty of intrigue as to how Tottenham and Postecoglou navigate a world post-Kane.

Do they spend the money across the team or invest heavily in a single replacement, even if they could be forced to significantly overpay given teams know they have cash to burn?

Regardless, the pending loss of Kane already puts Postecoglou at a serious disadvantage, even if it might extend his grace period.

19 CHARGES OF INSIDER TRADING LATER …

Just when Postecoglou thought he didn’t have enough off-field distractions in pre-season, Tottenham owner Joe Lewis had to throw himself into the mix.

The 86-year-old was charged with insider training in late July, although he denied the 19 counts in a Manhattan federal court and has been released on bail.

Lewis was accused of gifting his employees and love interests with inside details on deals from 2013 to 2021, with the scheme reportedly securing millions for those involved.

If found guilty, Lewis could face several years in prison given the most serious of his securities fraud and conspiracy charges carry a maximum sentence of 25 and five years in prison respectively.

Despite the justifiable concerns surrounding the club’s owner, Postecoglou unsurprisingly played a straight bat when quizzed if it would alter his pre-season plans.

“Why wouldn’t they be?” Postecoglou said.

“The club’s already said it’s not a club matter. We’re not putting out a statement that’s not true so if it’s not a club matter it doesn’t affect me in terms of what I’m trying to do, so no-one’s said anything like that to me.

“If you think that’s what I’m involved in you don’t know what my role is here.”

As Postecoglou was at pains to point out, Lewis’ charges are not a club matter.

But it created an unnecessary side plot in a pre-season which the Tottenham manager could most certainly have done without.

ANGE LIVES UP TO CHAIRMAN’S WISH, BUT WILL DEJA VU STRIKE?

For several years, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has stated his desire to see attractive football grace the turf at the club’s state-of-the-art venue.

But the appointments of Nuno Espirito Santo, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte in recent years did not match up with that sentiment.

Yet in the club’s statement announcing Postecoglou’s appointment, Levy made a comment that sums up the Aussie perfectly and might actually reflect his wish.

“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,” Levy said.

“He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy – everything that is important to our Club.”

That “fast, attacking style of play”, also described as ‘Angeball’, has been on display during Tottenham’s pre-season.

One example was in their friendly against Barcelona, where a clip of the team — largely made up of second-stringers — building out from the back early in the second half did the rounds on social media.

Fans and pundits were left astounded that Spurs could invite such pressure onto themselves and still make it up the field.

The Guardian’s Max Rushton wrote “Spurs just played more football in 30 seconds than in the previous 3 years,” while Football.London’s Alasdair Gold claimed Tottenham “suddenly seemed able to pass the ball around with a verve and confidence that the Barca fans were expecting from their own side.”

Spurs embrace SPICY chaos of ‘Angeball’ | 00:34

Even the Spanish media raved about Postecoglou’s side, with Mundo Deportivo journalist Joan Poqui claiming the London club “dominated the game” in an “excellent” and “aggressive” display.

Yet it is important to remember all of this has happened in pre-season where a win helps breed confidence, but is not the be-all end-all.

Once the Premier League gets underway, there are no bonus points for playing entertaining football.

There’s also the history of Postecoglou’s team suffering slow starts at the beginning of his reign.

At Celtic, the Aussie was already under pressure at the start of the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership season as the Hoops lost three and drew one of their opening seven games, including a defeat to bitter rivals Rangers.

In his first season at Yokohama, Postecoglou won five of his opening 16 J1 League games and would end the campaign safe from a relegation playoff only on goal difference.

Granted, there were mitigating circumstances at both clubs.

He had overseen a significant player overhaul at Celtic as he moulded the squad to his liking while there was the obvious language barrier in Japan.

But, as history would prove, Postecoglou went on to enjoy tremendous success at both destinations.

The 57-year-old won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup in his first season at the helm before completing the domestic treble in his second year.

At Yokohama, Postecoglou ended the club’s 15-year drought for a J1 League title by finishing top of the pile in 2019, all while setting Japan alight with his eye-catching brand of football.

Eccleshare points out that based on Postecoglou’s past, it seems likely he won’t get off to a flying start in London.

But as his time in Glasgow and Yokohama proved, some patience is required.

The big question is: will he get it in a league notorious for lacking it?

“That to me is the crux of it,” Eccleshare said.

Postecoglou knows he must hit the ground running. (Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“He probably will results-wise make a slow start. It’s a lot to try and implement in a short space of time.

“He has tended to have slow results early on at his other clubs. I just hope he is given time and patience by the fans, by the media, by the club in general.”

Even if Postecoglou doesn’t get the results he is after in his early days at the club, Eccleshare pointed to a clear example that highlights why it might not be as big a deal as it could be.

“One thing I would say is fans can generally tell if there’s at least a plan and the team is moving in the right direction,” Eccleshare said.

“Pochettino and Nuno’s first 10 games, the results were pretty similar points-wise.

“Nuno got the sack obviously and it was untenable because the football was dreadful and it was clear there wasn’t really a plan or they were moving in the right direction whereas with Pochettino, there was a lot more good will.

“I would hope that as long as it feels the team are moving in the right direction, the fans are a bit more supportive.

“I just hope there is a bit of a grace period where people accept it is going to take a bit of time for his methods to really bed in.”

Postecoglou has a mixed start to the season with an opening game at Brentford before they host Manchester United.

An easier run of Bournemouth (away), Burnley (away) and Sheffield United (home) awaits, but the Aussie will face tougher tests in the following two games.

Postecoglou’s first taste of the fiery North London derby against Arsenal (away) takes place on September 24 followed by a home fixture against Liverpool.

If the Aussie picks up a win against either of those two clubs or indeed both, it will buy him the most valuable commodity in the Premier League: time.

Even if he doesn’t, history has shown that when clubs back Postecoglou, he returns the favour in silverware, something Tottenham so desperately crave.

WHY ANGE MUST DEFY SERIAL WINNER’S EXTRAORDINARY RANT

In the wake of Tottenham’s 3-3 draw against Southampton in March in which they tossed away a 3-1 lead, former boss Antonio Conte launched into an extraordinary tirade in his post-match press conference.

Conte claimed he saw “11 players that play for themselves” and a group who “don’t want to play under pressure” and “don’t want to play under stress.”

Whatever Conte thought of his former players, they are now under the tutelage of Postecoglou and he will have formed his own take.

In terms of departures, Harry Winks (permanent move to Leicester) and Joe Rodon (loan to Leeds) are the only official ones, although Kane’s move to Bayern is all but confirmed.

Tottenham also turned a pair of loan signings permanent in Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro, although the latter was an obligation

But Postecoglou also made a number of additions to his team that show he’s committed to changing the way Tottenham have played.

He’s brought in a new goalkeeper in Guglielmo Vicario, a relatively unknown quantity between the sticks but adept at having the ball at his feet, something Hugo Lloris struggled with.

There’s also the £40m addition of James Maddison who adds much-needed creativity into the midfield, while tricky winger Manor Solomon joined on a free and provides solid depth up front.

One area in need of desperate improvement is at the heart of defence and Postecoglou has moved to address that, signing Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Postecoglou admitted he would like another centre-back through the door, stating “the potential is there” to do so, per Football.London.

But there is only so much Postecoglou can improve via the transfer window.

Much like Eddie Howe did to the likes of Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Fabian Schar at Newcastle, Postecoglou must find a way to unlock new levels in the players he already has at his disposal.

Tottenham is not a bad team by any stretch and their fourth-place finish in the 2021/22 season proves that, yet there is certainly some truth behind Conte’s absurd rant.

But under Postecoglou, unheralded players could have their moment to shine.

    Take Oliver Skipp, for example.

The England under-21 star never quite looked at home in a 2-man defensive midfield pairing under Conte but has appeared strong in Postecoglou’s 4-3-3 formation and scored twice against Barcelona.

“He has been outstanding,” Postecoglou said of Skipp after the friendly.

“Obviously he didn’t have much of a break but since he’s been in he’s got bags of energy and he uses that really well. He maintains an intensity with and without the ball that makes him hard to contend with.”

Another is Giovani Lo Celso, who spent the last 18 months out on loan at Villarreal.

But Eccleshare tipped a £25m signing from last year to flourish in Postecoglou’s set-up.

Oliver Skipp could be one player who enjoys a new lease of life under Postecoglou . (Photo by Yong Teck Lim/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

“A really important position for Ange would be that deep-lying No. 6 who can spray passes, kind of like Callum McGregor did [at Celtic],” Eccleshare said.

“I think (Yves) Bissouma could be really good for that. He did that a bit for Brighton.”

The 26-year-old’s passing numbers last season prove why he could be the metronome the Postecoglou system requires.

Per OptaAnalyst, Bissouma had the fifth-best passing rate of all Premier League players who logged at least 1,000 minutes.

Bissouma had a passing accuracy of 91.3 per cent, the best figure from a midfielder in the top flight.

The only players ahead of him were four centre-backs, three of which play for Manchester City who are known for passing teams to death: Manuel Akanji (93.3 per cent), John Stones (93.3 per cent), Victor Lindelof (93. per cent) and Ruben Dias (92.7 per cent).

Although Postecoglou could revolutionise Tottenham’s midfield, it is the defence which might give him more grey hairs.

Tottenham conceded 63 goals last season, their second-most in the Premier League era.

Signing Van de Ven won’t alleviate their defensive woes overnight and as is often the case under Postecoglou, his style can result in a worrying number of goals conceded.

Bissouma looms as a key player for Postecoglou in his preferred three-man midfield. (Photo by Yong Teck Lim/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

In his first season at Yokohama, Postecoglou’s side shipped 56 goals, the third-highest figure in the J1 League.

Part of the alarming figure of goals conceded is likely because Postecoglou employs a high defensive line and for some defenders, it can severely expose them.

Against Barcelona, Gold noted club stalwart Eric Dier “still does not look entirely comfortable with that high line.”

Gold also added “the fullbacks struggled with Barcelona’s balls over them and down the flanks” and singled out left back Sergio Reguilon as one who really battled.

Reguilon will likely be in direct competition for the starting left back role with 20-year-old Destiny Udogie, who spent last season on loan at Serie A club Udinese.

On the right side, Postecoglou has Emerson Royal who adopts a more defensive approach to playing and the attack-minded Pedro Porro.

The defenders on both flanks have had their chances to prove to Postecoglou why they deserve a starting berth, but from pre-season reports, none have quite done enough to nail down a spot.

If Postecoglou can tighten up Tottenham at the back, the rest will almost certainly take care of itself.

Postecoglou must fix Tottenham’s defence if he is to succeed this season. (Photo by Roslan RAHMAN / AFP)Source: AFP

With just days until Tottenham’s Premier League opener, Postecoglou will no doubt be itching to just get on the touchline and get the season underway.

The moment he takes his spot in the dugout is one that has been decades in the making from the day he began at South Melbourne way back in 1996.

Even if several factors have gone against him in his first pre-season at Tottenham, nothing can take away from the fact Postecoglou can say he is a Premier League manager.

Granted, he has arrived at a club in dire need of a major refresh and he could lose his best player early into the season, things you would most certainly not want for your first shot at the big time.

Yet all throughout Postecoglou’s career that has taken him from suburban grounds in Australia to the World Cup, he’s often been the underdog.

It’s just the way he likes it and why this pre-season has set the perfect stage for him to shine.

$168m Spurs bombshell: Ange on the brink of losing superstar Kane after deal ‘accepted’

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly accepted an offer worth over $AU168 million to allow Harry Kane to sign with German giants Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old is in the final month of his contract and has been linked to an exit for some time, though in recent weeks he shown more interest in staying, enjoying life under the new Aussie manager.

Last weekend, Kane showed no sign of being distracted while scoring a hat-trick in 55 minutes against Shakhtar in what was new boss Postecoglou’s first match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Postecoglou was given a rousing reception by the Spurs faithful and the noise increased when it was announced Kane would captain the north London side in the absence of Hugo Lloris.

Kane, Tottenham’s all-time record scorer, had two early shots saved, before opening his account with a 38th-minute penalty after James Maddison had been brought down in the area.

The Ukrainian visitors equalised on the brink of half-time through Kevin Kelsy’s close-range header.

But Kane was soon back on the goal trail when he headed in a cross from fellow England international Maddison in the 50th minute.

Lifelong Spurs fan Kane had already heard several renditions of “he’s one of our own” before his hat-trick but a section of the crowd chanted “we want you to stay” after his third goal”.

Kane completed his haul for the day when he followed up from close range in the 79th minute after substitute Manor Solomon’s curled shot was saved.

Postecoglou replaced the Tottenham talisman a minute later and Kane left the pitch to a standing ovation before responding with applause to all four corners of the ground.

Spurs academy graduate Dane Scarlett came on for Kane and scored with the last kick of the game.

The full-time whistle followed and Kane walked over on his own to each side of the stadium to clap the fans, but Australian boss Postecoglou played down the significance of the gesture.

“You are reading something into it, aren’t you,” he said. “I don’t even know what’s in Harry’s mind, let alone anyone else’s. I think all these things will obviously play out over the next period, we’ll deal with what happens from there.”

‘Doesn’t sit well with me’: Ange’s honest admission in ‘reminder’ to Spurs after big pre-season win

Harry Kane scored four goals in Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-1 pre-season friendly win at home to Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday as speculation over the England captain’s future intensified.

Kane has entered the final 12 months of his six-year Spurs contract and has been courted aggressively by Bayern Munich, with the German giants reported to have lodged their latest bid for the forward on Friday.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou told Bayern Munich only one deadline mattered in their bid to sign Harry Kane after the England captain scored four goals in a 5-1 pre-season friendly win at home to Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday.

Kane has entered the final 12 months of his six-year Spurs contract and has been courted aggressively by Bayern, with the German giants reported to have lodged their latest bid for the forward on Friday while setting a self-imposed deadline of midnight.

But with Spurs holding firm so far during the pre-season transfer window the 30-year-old Kane showed no sign of being distracted while scoring a hat-trick in 55 minutes against Shakhtar in what was new boss Postecoglou’s first match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but could be the Spurs’ hero’s last.

Postecoglou, however, said only one date counted when it came to the protracted saga of Kane’s future.

“We know there’s one deadline and that’s the end of the transfer window,” he said.

“Beyond that, I’m in open dialogue with Harry and with the club on a regular basis. I’ve said to them that if the status quo changes then inform me…I’m building a team here. I can’t wait (around) for a decision either way to get going.”

The former Celtic manager added: “You saw today (Sunday) that Harry certainly is invested in what we’re doing and we’ll keep on doing that unless something changes.”

Bayern have made no secret about their pursuit of Kane, with Postecoglou insisting: “I certainly wouldn’t talk about contracted players at other football clubs but I’m not at Bayern mate so they can go the way they want.”

He completed his treble five minutes later when Son Heung-Min found Dejan Kulusevski, who slipped the ball between Mykola Matviyenko’s legs, with Kane shooting powerfully into the bottom corner.

Postecoglou provides update on Tottenham duo’s future, sends warning ahead of Women’s World Cup

Ange Postecoglou has addressed media in Perth ahead of Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against West Ham, providing updates on the playing future of Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris in a wide-ranging interview.

Kane’s future was the first topic of discussion for Postecoglou, with Bayern Munich having already shown strong interest in signing the 29-year-old.

In fact, honorary president Uli Hoeness told SPORT1 earlier in the week that Kane has “very clearly signalled his decision” to leave Tottenham for the German champions.

For now it is just noise, with no confirmation of any such move as Postecoglou telling reporters on Monday that “no one” has spoken to him from Munich.

“I had a good chat with Harry,” Postecoglou opened.

“As I said before, nothing earth-shattering or defining from I guess what people are seeking.

Just a good chat. I sort of introduced myself and we spoke mainly about the club and kind of where he thinks it’s at and where he thinks we can improve things and training ever since, it’s been good.”

When pressed on the vision for the club’s future that he may try to sell to Kane, Postecoglou insisted his focus since arriving at Tottenham has never been about just one player — no matter how big the name.

“It’s not a specific vision for one person, it’s about the group,” the Australian said.

“Me and Harry were perfectly aligned in that, we want to see a successful team this year.

“For me it’s about really focusing on everybody and making sure that we set the environment in the right way. The players have been brilliant so far, really receptive and open-minded about what we’re trying to do. Coaches have been brilliant in delivering that message.

“It’s been as positive as you can. It’s preseason, you know. I think everyone thinks they have a great preseason until the games start but so far it’s been good.”

Kane has travelled with the team after being included in Tottenham’s pre-season squad set for Australia, at one point spotted shaking hands with chairman Daniel Levy.

The 29-year-old’s future will continue to be a point of contention externally but Postecoglou said it won’t be a distraction inside the group.

It is also not a focus for Tottenham’s new boss himself, with Postecoglou telling reporters his chat with Kane was not an attempt to finalise the superstar striker’s future.

“Again, I said the discussion wasn’t really about that. It was more about, like I said, the collective and what we’re doing,” Postecoglou said.

“Harry’s the same as all the other players. It’s not something I ask when they walk through the door, ‘Have you got a ticket or not?’

“It’s just about as we go along, we’re working hard as a group. Some will be on for the whole journey and others won’t. But a lot of that sort of gets decided along the way. It’s not something that I’m sitting down and demanding from people right at the outset.

“The reality is we have got a bit less than a month before the season starts, the transfer window is still open for a while, so we’ll see how it all transpires.

“There are a lot of people that know Harry better than me but he’s not going to get fazed by anything. He’s here and while he’s here, he’s totally committed to what we’re doing.

“That’s the way I’ve seen things. In terms of me, it has zero impact on me. If other people and clubs want to talk about our contracted players, that’s more of an issue for them than us.”

While Kane’s future at the club may be up in the air, it appears far more likely that captain Lloris will be out the exit door.

Lloris was given permission to skip the team’s pre-season tour squad, instead training back home as he looks to find a new club after 11 years in north London.

Postecoglou said he had a “good chat” with Lloris and confirmed the goalkeeper is ready to “begin the next phase of his career” away from Tottenham.

“He’s been an outstanding servant for this football club for quite a long time,” Postecoglou said.

“Captain of the club, he’s made an indelible mark at Tottenham football club. I had a chat with him and he felt that he’s obviously hoping for a move somewhere else so he can play and begin the next phase of his career.

“I had a good chat with him and really left it up to him whether he wanted to come along because I think he deserves that respect to garner the direction of his own future because of his standing.

“I’ve only sort of had two or three chats with him but even at training I can see he’s an outstanding goalkeeper but also an outstanding human being as well. From my perspective we had an open discussion and he just felt it would be better for him hopefully with a move imminent rather than bringing him halfway around the world that he stays at the training ground, works there and prepares for his next opportunity.

“It doesn’t diminish his contribution to the football club. It’s the hardest thing for a footballer, sometimes you can’t write your endings.

“It’s probably not the way he wanted to finish his career at Tottenham with everything that he’s contributed, but at the same time I don’t think it needs to be anything other than a positive outcome in that he leaves as someone who’s made a mark at a very big football club and for all players I guess that’s what they’re looking for.”

Lloris’ imminent departure means Postecoglou will be on the lookout for a new captain, although the Australian is going into that process with an open mind.

“Some of those things you’re better off letting it grow organically rather than forcing things and having preconceived ideas,” he said.

“I just want to see how the group works. Like I said, so far the whole group has been really strong in terms of committing to what we’re going to do and that’s what you want to see. Within that you see individuals who will look to lead and they all lead in different ways.

“It doesn’t always mean it’s the highest profile or loudest, it’s sometimes by actions and what I’m looking for is hopefully leadership within the whole group. Guys that are prepared for what we’re about to embark on and to take that responsibility.”

Postecoglou admitted it was “pretty bizarre” that he would be overseeing his first game as Tottenham coach back in Australia, with the Spurs facing West Ham at 8pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

“Chuffed to bits that this is going to be our first official game,” added Postecoglou.

“I always enjoy it, obviously I came here with Celtic last year. I knew the lads would enjoy it here, the weather’s beautiful, it’s been great and I think they would enjoy the environment here and I think they have.

“It’s important for us, it’s an important tour for us because we get to spend some time together as a group, get to know one another, and so far it’s been positive.”

Australian football fans will be spoiled for choice this week, with the FIFA Women’s World Cup also kicking off on Thursday as the Matildas play the Republic of Ireland in Sydney.

It presents yet another opportunity for Australia to capitalise on the success of its men’s national team in Qatar, although Postecoglou warned it won’t happen automatically.

After all, in an interview with Stan Sport FC last year, Postecoglou conceded he initially thought Australia’s triumph at the 2015 Asian Cup would be a “watershed moment” for the sport.

“The reason I was obsessed with winning the Asian Cup was because I thought that could be a watershed moment for Australian football because I think winning is everything,” Postecoglou said at the time.

“I equated it to the Euros. When a nation wins the Euros, irrespective of how strong a nation – could be a Denmark or Greece – it’s a seminal moment in that country’s evolution because, all of a sudden, they feel like they’ve achieved something.”

Instead, Postecoglou was left feeling “flat” after the success failed to have the widespread impact he had been hoping for.

That, of course, doesn’t mean history will repeat. But Postecoglou isn’t just assuming the best either.

“Where it is right now is where it’s been many times,” he said on Monday.

“It’s what happens from now on. Australian football has always been pretty good at making a mark. Sonny mentioned 2015 and the Asian Cup and barely a ripple.

“Hopefully what it means now is, particularly with the girls, it’s getting great exposure all over the world. In the UK there’s great exposure there and there’s a great chance to make an impact.

“The Socceroos were brilliant at the World Cup. The A League is producing good young players. It’s about the game taking advantage of that and making an indelible footprint in the sporting landscape here, which we know is always challenging. It’s where it’s been a lot of times. Hopefully this time it takes advantage of it.”
