Rohit Sharma brutally slams critics of Indian pitches following conclusion of shortest Test match in South Africa

As the dust settled at Newlands following the exhilarating second Test of India’s tour to South Africa, one couldn’t help but be captivated by the sheer drama that unfolded on the pitch. The Newlands surface, initially appearing benign, revealed its deceptive nature as a whopping 23 wickets tumbled on the very first day of action, ultimately causing the game to end in less than two days. Notably, the guests emerged triumphant, clinching a seven-wicket victory over the Dean Elgar-led side.

However, the real fireworks ignited off the pitch as Indian skipper Rohit Sharma took centre stage. In a no-holds-barred critique, Sharma’s words injected excitement into the debates surrounding Indian pitch conditions.

‘You come here to challenge yourself’: Rohit Sharma on playing in South Africa

Rohit boldly declared his acceptance of challenging pitches, asserting his readiness to face such conditions. With unapologetic enthusiasm, the latter then aimed a verbal barrage at critics who had dared to question the quality of pitches used in the recently concluded ODI World Cup 2023, which was played in India.

“I don’t mind being on pitches like this as long as everyone keeps their mouth shut in India and no one is talking about the pitches there,” Rohit said Thursday after the match. Yes, it is dangerous, but you come here (South Africa) to challenge yourself, and you must face up to it,” Rohit said in the post-match press conference.

Rohit’s unapologetic stand on Newlands pitch and criticism of Indian pitches

Adopting an assertive stance called for impartiality in pitch assessments, particularly emphasizing the role of match referees. Expressing disbelief in the World Cup 2023 final pitch being rated below standard, he urged a fair evaluation based on performance rather than preconceived notions about countries. The right-handed openers’ aggressive tone demanded a shift in the approach to pitch ratings, focusing on objective observations and eliminating biases.

“When it turns on day one in India, people say, ‘Oh, there is a puff of dust’. We need to stay neutral, especially match referees. I would love to see how the pitches are rated. I still can’t believe the World Cup final pitch was rated below standard. A player got a hundred there. They must rate pitches based on what they see, not based on countries,” the 36-year-old added.

South Africa coach provides update on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi’s availability for the 1st Test against India

In anticipation of the upcoming Test series against India, South Africa‘s coach, Shukri Conrad, has provided a crucial update on the availability of key pacers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Following the setback of losing the One Day International (ODI) series to a Rohit Sharma-less Team India, the Proteas are keen on making a strong comeback in the Test format. The two Tests are scheduled to take place in Centurion from December 26-30 and in Cape Town from January 3-7, 2024.

South Africa Coach’s take on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi’s fitness

Rabada has been contending with a recent heel injury, while Ngidi has been recovering from an ankle issue. However, Coach Conard expressed optimism about both pacers, affirming that they remain integral parts of the squad and are available for selection in the Boxing Day Test match on December 26.

“They are both here with us and that means they are available for selection as things stand. We have not called anybody in as a replacement and hopefully come the morning of the match we have 15 fit players to select from,” Conrad was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Conard has also shed light on the promising 23-year-old fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee, who showcased his skills during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Describing Coetzee as a relatively new entrant in Test cricket, Conard emphasized his phenomenal performance every time he takes the field, irrespective of the format.

“He’s still a baby in Test cricket. He’s been phenomenal every time he’s stepped onto the field, whether it be with the white ball in his hand or the red one. This is just going to be another step. He brings aggression, he brings something that we’ve always prided ourselves on as South Africans, which is pace. He brings all of those elements and hopefully through the experience he builds in the (T20) league’s and playing for South Africa with the white and red ball, in a couple of years’ time he can be leading our bowling attack,”  the 56-year-old concluded.

Sunil Gavaskar handpicks India’s playing XI for the ‘boxing day’ Test against South Africa in Centurion

As the much-anticipated two-match Test series between South Africa and India is scheduled to commence on Tuesday (December 26) in Centurion, the return of key Indian players adds vigor to the lineup after their hiatus following the ODI World Cup 2023 Final loss against Australia. Offering his strategic insights for the Boxing Day Test, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, has put forth his envisioned playing XI.

Sunil Gavaskar’s ideal Indian Playing XI: Batting department

According to Gavaskar, the opening duo will comprise Rohit Sharma and the promising Yashasvi Jaiswal, injecting a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. In a tactical move, Gavaskar advocated for Shubman Gill to retain the number three position, a role he recently played in the recent West Indies Test series, with Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer anchoring the middle order at 4, 5 and 6, respectively.

“My Playing XI is going to be very simple. The openers will be a [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill number three, number four [Virat] Kohli. Number five KL Rahul, number six Shreyas Iyer, or five and six that can move here and there,” Gavaskar said.

Bowling Attack: Two spinners and three pacers

Irrespective of the conditions at Centurion, Gavaskar underscored the importance of playing two spinners and recommends the seasoned pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to fulfill this crucial role.

Addressing the pace attack, the Mumbai-born cricketer suggested the inclusion of Bengal seamer Mukesh Kumar, partnering with the experienced Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, especially in the absence of Mohammed Shami, who remains sidelined due to fitness concerns stemming from an ankle injury sustained during the CWC 2023.

“After that, it will be Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. And then the three fast bowlers, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj,” the 74-year-old concluded.

After delivering a stellar performance in the first clash of their tour to South Africa, India faced a whopping nine-wicket defeat in the second ODI. The hosts showcased dominance in every aspect of the game, securing a remarkable victory to level the three-match contest.

Disappointing batting performance by Men in Blue

India, being asked into bat first, got off to a shaky start as Nandre Burger claimed the early wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad on the second ball of the innings. Despite the setback, Sai Sudharsan held firm, reaching 62 in a resilient partnership with skipper KL Rahul. The duo added up crucial 68 runs before Sudharsan’s dismissal by Lizaad Williams in the 27th over. Rahul continued his fine form, registering a fifty, but a collapse followed after his departure on 56.

Debutant Rinku Singh showed promise with a positive start, contributing 17 runs. However, a flurry of wickets, including Rinku, Sanju Samson and Axar Patel, halted India’s progress. Arshdeep Singh‘s useful knock of 18 helped India reach a total of 211 in 46.2 overs.

Tony de Zorzi shines in the Proteas’ run-chase

The Proteas’ pursuit of 212 runs began on a positive note, with both openers adopting a cautious approach in the initial powerplay, contributing only 39 runs. Following a dropped catch by Ruturaj in the slips, Reeza Hendricks, supported by Tony de Zorzi, constructed a solid opening partnership of 130 runs. Hendricks departed after a well-made 52 off 81 balls, falling to Arshdeep Singh. Overcoming a shaky start, Tony showcased an array of strokes to register his maiden ODI half-century, eventually converting it into a brilliant century, finishing unbeaten at 119 from 122 deliveries, featuring nine fours and six maximums.

Rassie van der Dussen, batting at number 3, displayed excellent form, contributing 36 runs in 51 balls and forging a 76-run partnership for the second wicket with De Zorzi before succumbing to Rinku.
