Top 6 overpriced players in IPL 2024 auction

The IPL 2024 auction unfolded as a spectacle of unprecedented proportions, leaving cricket enthusiasts and pundits alike in awe. The bidding war that ensued was not just high-stakes but historic, rewriting the records for the highest bids in the illustrious history of IPL.

IPL 2024 auction extravaganza: A staggering surge in player valuations

The auction unfolded with a remarkable surge in player valuations, catapulting the bidding process into uncharted financial territories. Franchises engaged in an intense bidding wrestle for cricketing talent, and the stakes were nothing short of astronomical.

From seasoned international stars to emerging talents, many players became coveted assets, commanding eye-watering sums that reflected the fierce competition and the ever-increasing value placed on cricketing prowess in the world’s premier T20 league.

Six players on whom the franchises over-spend in IPL 2024 auction:

    1. Mitchell Starc – 24.75 Crore (KKR):

    Mitchell Starc (Image source: Twitter)

The colossal bid of 24.75 crore for Mitchell Starc by Kolkata Knight Riders raised eyebrows. Notably, this marked the most expensive acquisition in IPL history. The pacer, absent from the IPL for eight years, showcased an average run with the ball despite Australia‘s ODI World Cup triumph in 2023. The excessive amount paid for his services appeared disproportionate to his recent performances.

    2. Pat Cummins – 20.50 Crore (SRH):

    Pat Cummins

Securing the second-highest bid at 20.50 crore, Aussie skipper Pat Cummins became a talking point. Despite the all-rounder’s commendable skills in ODIs and Tests, his fit within the fast-paced dynamics of the IPL seemed questionable. The substantial investment in him stirred discussions about the value proposition for the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

    3. Alzarri Joseph – 11.75 Crore (RCB):

The most expensive Caribbean player in the IPL 2024 auction, Alzarri Joseph, was acquired by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 11.75 crore. However, his dismal performance in IPL 2023, bagging only seven wickets with an economy of 9.38, seemed quite irrational with the high price tag associated with his name.

    4. Spencer Johnson – 10 Crore (GT):

Gujarat Titans spent a hefty ten crore on Australian bowler Spencer Johnson. Despite featuring ordinary stats and having no experience of playing on Indian soil, Johnson became a subject of discussion as an overpriced commodity in the IPL auction, raising questions about the valuation process.

    5. Harshal Patel – 11.75 Crore (PBKS):

    Harshal Patel

Punjab Kings secured Harshal Patel for a whopping 11.75 crore, making him the most expensive Indian player in the auction. However, analyzing his recent domestic performances and the previous IPL season, where he maintained an economy of 9.66, the bid for Harshal appeared quite higher.

Chennai Super Kings grabbed the uncapped Indian player Sameer Rizvi for 8.40 crore. Despite Rizvi boasting an impressive batting average of 49.16 in domestic T20s, his lack of experience in top-tier cricket and the highly competitive IPL raised questions about the thought behind the sizable bid.

  • AB de Villiers breaks down why CSK won’t go after Pat Cummins in the IPL 2024 Auction

AB de Villiers breaks down why CSK won’t go after Pat Cummins in the IPL 2024 Auction

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who clinched their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title last season after beating the then-defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the final, gearing up for the 17th edition of the cash-rich league under the leadership of the talismanic captain MS Dhoni. As CSK prepares for the IPL 2024 auction along with the nine other teams, former South African and Royal Challenegers Bangalore (RCB) star AB de Villiers has made a prediction about the possible move for CSK.

AB de Villiers’ explains why CSK won’t pursue Pat Cummins in the IPL 2024 Auction

With a few big names set to go under the hammer on December 19 in Dubai, De Villiers believed that Australian skipper Pat Cummins might not be an option for the Dhoni-led side, and they can explore better alternatives than the star pacer. The 39-year-old considered Cummins as a two-format bowler and mentions that the Aussie speedster has been sensational in longer formats of the game but hasn’t been effective when it comes to the T20 format.

“I don’t see Pat Cummins going to CSK. He has been a bit expensive over the past few years so I don’t see T20 as his strongest suit. He is more of an ODI or a Test bowler. But anything can happen in the auction,” De Villiers said on his Youtube channel.

“They (CSK) are fairly good in the spin department and I feel they will need a pacer. You will see these guys feature at the backend of the tournament. They always seem to find a way,” the Pretoria-born cricketer concluded.

CSK’s current pace bowling line-up and alternatives in the auction

When it comes to CSK, they already have many fast bowlers in the form of Simarjeet Singh, Mukesh Chaudhary, Deepak Chahar and Sri Lankan Mahesh Pathirana. However, the lack of experience may force CSK to consider going after Cummins. Apart from Cummins, many other international pacers are taking part in the auction, including Cummins’ countryman Josh Hazlewood, who played for CSK for two years and could be an option for the defending champions.

As the  Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mini-auction approaches, South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee has emerged as one of the most sought-after prospects following his standout performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023. The right-arm pacer has accumulated an impressive record of 20 wickets in eight matches at an average of 19.80 and an economy of 6.23, positioning him as a one of the top contender in the auction.

Ravichandran Ashwin predicts the team that will target Gerald Coetzee in IPL 2024 auction

Speaking on his Youtube channel, renowned Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has predicted that Mumbai Indians (MI) will be the team in pursuit of Coetzee. Ashwin has described Coetzee as a player perfectly suited for the Mumbai-based franchise, citing his skills and potential contribution to the team’s dynamics. Interestingly, the right-arm off spinner has suggested that MI might not have pursued Australian pacer Mitchell Starc despite the team’s significant purse of INR 17.75 crore for the mini-auction.

“Gerald Coetzee is a very Mumbai Indians player. That blue jersey with gold on him, bowling at the Wankhede Stadium, bustling in—he looks like an MI sort of a player. If they don’t get anybody, I think they are going for him. In my view, they might not even go for Mitchell Starc,” Ashwin said.

Potential bidding war for Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc

Ashwin has also anticipated a potential bidding war among franchises for Australian pacers Pat Cummins and Starc at the IPL 2024 auction. While acknowledging the duo’s exceptional talent, he has raised concerns about their availability due to scheduling conflicts with the Ashes and the T20 World Cup 2024. The Chennai-born cricketer has suggested that the decision of Cummins and Starc to opt out of the IPL might not be surprising given the calendar clashes.

“Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are the only two fresh guys. Though there are guys like Rachin Ravindra, Gerald Coetzee, and a few other names, it looks pretty sure that these are the two names everybody wants to acquire. The Ashes is going to come, as is the T20 World Cup, and there is a heavy chance that Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc are going to pull out of the tournament, and it is there in their histories,” the 37-year-old concluded.
