IPL 2024 Qualifier 2, SRH vs RR: MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report, Chennai Weather Forecast, T20 Stats & Records | Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals

On Friday, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will clash with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the second Qualifier of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The victorious team of this match will advance to the final and compete for the prestigious trophy.

RR, the champions of the inaugural season of the lucrative league, will be eager to secure a win and strive to add another title to their name. Conversely, SRH, under the leadership of their new captain, Pat Cummins, will aim to overcome their opponents and progress towards facing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 26th. This high-stakes encounter is set to take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

T20 Stats and Records at MA Chidambaram Stadium:

    • Total matches: 83
    • Matches won batting first: 48
    • Matches won bowling first: 35
    • Average score batting first: 164
    • Highest total recorded: 246/5 (20 Ov) by Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royals
    • Lowest total recorded: 70 all out (17.1 Ov) by Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Chennai Super Kings
    • Highest score chased: 213/4 (19.3 Ov) by Lucknow Super Giants vs Chennai Super Kings

    MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report:

Based on past matches held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the pitch is expected to be favourable for bowlers, particularly spinners. Known for its spin-friendly nature, the surface offers significant grip and considerable turn. This characteristic could pose a challenge for batters, limiting their ability to play shots accurately. The spin and grip will likely limit scoring opportunities, potentially leading to a match where bowlers dominate proceedings.

    Chennai Weather Forecast:

Cricket fans in Chennai can expect mostly favourable weather conditions for the upcoming match. While the sky will be cloudy, there is a 0% chance of precipitation, posing no disruption in the game. Despite temperatures possibly reaching 32 degrees Celsius, potentially testing the players’ endurance, the presence of winds at around 19 km/hr should offer some relief. Humidity levels are forecasted to be around 76%, which could impact both batters and bowlers alike.

IPL 2024: Qualifier 1: Here’s what will happen if KKR vs SRH match gets abandoned due to rain in Ahmedabad

The scene is set for an exciting showdown as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prepare to face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Scheduled on May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, this match holds the key to determining one of the finalists of IPL 2024. Nevertheless, the recent spate of rain interruptions throughout the league, culminating in a washout in Ahmedabad, has introduced an element of uncertainty surrounding the highly anticipated clash between KKR and SRH.

    Rain threat in Ahmedabad?

The upcoming clash between KKR and SRH does not have a backup day scheduled, but cricket enthusiasts in Ahmedabad have reason to cheer. While certain areas like Sabarmati and Motera might experience light rainfall on May 20, with a 33 percent likelihood of precipitation, the outlook for May 21, the pivotal day of the Qualifier 1 match, appears bright. Weather forecasts indicate clear skies both during the day and evening, with no rain in sight.

What if rain plays spoilsport in KKR vs SRH clash?

In case, rain affects the outcome of Qualifier 1 match between KKR and SRH, i.e. the game gets abandoned due to weather conditions or fails to yield a result even after the designated time and Super Overs, then a protocol comes into play. In these cases, the team with the higher standing in the league stage points table will progress directly to the IPL final. Given KKR’s position at the top of the table, they would secure their spot in the final.

Previous meeting of the two teams in IPL 2024

During their previous face-off, KKR registered victory over SRH by a mere four runs at Eden Gardens in the early stages of the tournament. However, the upcoming match heralds a change in momentum.

SRH has gained a significant boost with the addition of Travis Head, a power-hitter who was absent in their last meeting. On the flip side, KKR confronts a selection quandary due to Phil Salt‘s national commitments, compelling skipper Shreyas Iyer to navigate through a tactical puzzle.

Fans react as SRH qualifies for IPL 2024 playoffs after rain abandons match against GT

Match 66 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024  between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday (May 16) was washed out due to relentless rain. This washout secured SRH’s place in the IPL 2024 playoffs, making them the third team to qualify after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

    SRH’s IPL 2024 playoffs journey

Before the match between SRH and GT, SRH were fourth in the IPL standings with 14 points from 12 matches. The washout added one point to their tally, bringing it to 15 points from 13 matches. In contrast, GT ended their campaign with 12 points, falling short of the playoff spots. This marks SRH’s first playoff appearance since the 2020 season, having previously finished 8th in 2021, 2022 and 10th in 2023.

    Pat Cummins’ influence

Pat Cummins, the SRH captain, has been pivotal in their turnaround this season. Fresh off title victories in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, Cummins has led SRH with a fearless brand of cricket. His leadership has been credited for revitalizing the team and steering them back into playoff contention.

    Match-day rain drama

The matchday was marked by a steady downpour that delayed the toss and eventually led to the match being abandoned without a ball being bowled. Despite the inclement weather, a large crowd gathered at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium to support the home team. The fans were treated to a light show and music, celebrating SRH’s progress to the playoffs.

    Implications of the washout

The washout had significant implications for the IPL playoff race. SRH’s qualification almost ended the playoff hopes for Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Meanwhile, Cummins’ team will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 19 at home, with a chance to finish in the top two and secure a spot in Qualifier 1 against table-toppers Kolkata.

    Upcoming virtual knockout

The playoff picture added extra spice to the upcoming clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Bengaluru on Saturday. This match is now effectively a virtual knockout, with both teams vying for a spot in the playoffs. The rain-induced changes have heightened the stakes, promising an exciting end to the league stage of IPL 2024.

  • IPL 2024: Playoffs qualification scenario for DC after their win against LSG

IPL 2024: Playoffs qualification scenario for DC after their win against LSG

Delhi Capitals (DC) concluded their league stage with a 19-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 64th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This win has kept DC in the contention for a top-four finish.

Asked to bat first, DC posted a commanding total of 208 for 4, with significant contributions from Abhishek Porel (58 off 33) and Tristan Stubbs (57 off 25). In the chase, DC’s bowlers dismantled LSG’s top order, laying the groundwork for their victory. Despite spirited efforts from LSG’s Nicholas Pooran (61 off 27) and Arshad Khan (58 off 33), the visitors fell short of the target. However, DC’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs remain uncertain, relying heavily on miraculous outcomes.

Delhi Capitals’ position in the points table

DC are currently placed fifth in the team standings, having accumulated 14 points. The Capitals’ net run rate (NRR) of -0.377 is a significant concern, as it places them below both the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), despite all three teams having the same points.

    Playoffs qualification scenario for DC

The only way the team led by Rishabh Pant could qualify is if the CSK defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and SRH lose both their remaining matches by a combined margin of 194 runs. Additionally, LSG would need to either lose to the Mumbai Indians (MI) or win while maintaining a net run rate below DC.

    Scenario explanation

If this scenario materializes, CSK would reach 16 points, while DC, LSG, and SRH would all finish with 14 points each, resulting in the elimination of RCB from the tournament with 12 points. Delhi’s NRR would surpass the other teams in this situation, securing them the fourth position.

IPL 2024: Navjot Singh Sidhu lauds Gautam Gambhir after KKR secure IPL playoffs berth

In a stunning display of prowess, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have continued their impressive streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, securing a spot in the playoffs ahead of any other team this season. Their recent victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the iconic Eden Gardens showcased their unwavering determination and skill. Contrasting starkly with their previous season’s performance, where they languished at seventh place on the points table, the Knight Riders have undergone a remarkable transformation this year.

Displaying a newfound vigor and unity, they have emerged as a formidable force in the league stage. Leading the points tally with an impressive 19 points from 13 matches, the team’s resurgence has drawn praise from none other than former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu. He attributes this remarkable turnaround to the astute leadership of Gautam Gambhir from the dugout.

Observing the remarkable transformation, Sidhu stepped up to commend Gambhir, expressing his view that when faced with challenges, Gambhir consistently elevates his performance.

“I have seen Gautam Gambhir gets inspired when the situation gets tough. He starts advising and that’s how it should be. Anybody can be a pilot when the sea is calm but you only learn when in adverse situations,” Sidhu said on Star Sports.

Gambhir’s influence on KKR legacy in IPL

KKR clinched the IPL title in 2012 and 2014, both times under the captaincy of Gambhir. He joined KKR in the 2011 edition and led the team to victory by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) the following season. After a one-year interval, the Knight Riders emerged victorious once more, defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final.

Gambhir’s leadership acumen, paired with his batting mastery, propelled him to amass 3035 runs and 27 half-centuries in 108 appearances for the franchise, cementing his enduring influence on KKR’s IPL legacy.

IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Lucknow Super Giants qualify for playoffs after loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 57?

In a pivotal clash between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals in Match 57 of IPL 2024, KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first. This wasn’t really a surprising call made by Rahul, given how potent SRH have been when given the license to express themselves with the bat first.

The skipper could not capitalize and utilize the powerplay, ultimately perishing for a lingering 29 (33). Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis got dismissed for trivial scores, but a 99-run stand for the fifth wicket between Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni, LSG’s highest for that particular wicket in their entire history. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Sri Lankan debutant, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth were impressive with the ball, with the pacer not conceding a single boundary in his entire spell and picking a couple of wickets as well, and the young leggie exhibiting excellent control, going for only 27 runs in his four.

The two SRH openers slaughtered LSG’s bowlers, whacking every one to all parts of the ground. The first over bowled by Krishnappa Gowtham went for eight, post which every other bowler leaked runs like a burst dam, conceding the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs, shattering all sorts of records on the way. Impact Player, Travis Head, in combination with Abhishek Sharma, created absolute mayhem on the field as they didn’t let anyone off the hook, ending up with psychedelic scores of 75*(28) and 89*(30), lacing 16 fours and 14 maximums en route to a massive confidence-booster of a victory for the home team.

After being inflicted with a ruthless loss at the hands of SRH, LSG have it all to do in their remaining two matches, which will be against the Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians, respectively. With their net run rate taking a toll due to the margin by which they lost against SRH, it’s the least as compared to the five teams above them (-0.769).

Tied on their opponents for their next fixture with both of them being on 12 points with six wins and as many losses in their respective campaigns, their next game will be a do-or-die for them, with them failing to win that being the end of the season as far as the franchise is concerned, who finished third in their initial seasons (2022 and 2023), with their final league game against MI being nothing more than a dead rubber.

IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Mumbai Indians qualify for playoffs after loss against LSG in Match 48?

Mumbai Indians (MI) went down to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 49 of IPL 2024 at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow by four wickets. LSG skipper KL Rahul won the toss and chose to bowl where MI put up a score of 145 on board for LSG. With the help of Marcus Stoinis’ extraordinary batting, LSG won the match at their home. MI’s batting lineup failed to perform against the bowlers of LSG. Ishan Kishan and Nehal Wadhera scored 32 and 46 runs respectively.

On the other hand, LSG made a great start as they made 57 in 7 overs. Skipper and in-form batter KL Rahul unfortunately could not score in the match against Mumbai Indians. However, when Marcus Stoinis came into bat, he hit boundaries and helped LSG reach 116 runs in 15 overs. It was not a difficult target to chase for LSG as in this season we have seen the teams put up a target of 200+ runs on board which also gets chased by the second team.

Difficult situations arise for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024

Mumbai Indians are in ninth place in the standings after their loss against the Lucknow Super Giants. They have a dismal net run rate of -0.272 and 6 points from 10 games. MI will no longer be able to make the IPL 2024 playoffs after this loss.

Beginning in 2022, when there will be ten teams in the T20 league, franchises must earn at least 16 points to place in the top 4. There are just four games left for the Mumbai Indians to play in the IPL 2024 league stage. MI will only finish with 14 points overall, even if they win all four of them.

Even if the Mumbai Indians are not officially knocked out of the tournament, only a mathematical miracle will allow them to finish in fourth place and go to the postseason. MI will need to win each of their final four games by significant margins for that to occur. Furthermore, none of the other six teams which is extremely unlikely must finish with fewer than 12 points; instead, the top three teams must finish with more than 16 points.

In case more than one team finish the iPL league stage with 14 points, Mumbai Indians will have to have a net run rate that is better than the other teams to step towards the playoffs of iPL 2024.

IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Lucknow Super Giants qualify for playoffs after loss against RR in Match 44?

A thrilling match took place at the Ekana Sports Stadium on Saturday, as the table-topping Rajasthan Royals faced off against the Lucknow Super Giants. Both teams had been performing well this season, with each having secured a win in their previous games. Lucknow Super Giants put up a challenging score of 196 for 5 in 20 overs, thanks to half-centuries from KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda. Rahul’s performance was particularly outstanding as he led his team from the front.

However, Rajasthan Royals were not to be outdone. Samson stepped up to the plate, smashing an unbeaten 71 runs and leading his team to a 7-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants. Dhruv Jurel also contributed with a score of 51. Rajasthan Royals managed to chase down the 197-run target with one over to spare. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants will be hoping for better results in their upcoming fixtures.

LSG will aim to avoid further hindrances

LSG are currently placed in the fourth position in the points table of the ongoing tournament. So far, LSG have played nine games and emerged victorious in five matches. However, they have also lost three games. In order to qualify for the playoffs, LSG need to win at least three out of their next five games, which will take their total points to 16. Additionally, LSG have to keep a tab on their net run rate as it can play a crucial role in determining their position in the points table.

“If Hooda pushed on and scored 20 more, and I got 20 more then we’d finish around 220. That would have been the difference, that’s the 20 runs we left behind. We’re seeing with every game how important it is to give the bowlers that extra cushion because they are under the pump. Everyone loves range hitting and hitting it all over the park, we are no different. It is part of the prep. Our big hitters are Stoinis and Pooran who can hit those big shots. The other guys like us try to pick our areas and time the shots better,” said Rahul in the post-match presentation.

IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Kolkata Knight Riders qualify for Playoffs after loss against PBKS in Match 42?

Punjab Kings achieved a rare feat by successfully chasing a target of 262 runs set by Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This was the highest-ever chase in the history of T20 cricket. This win allowed Punjab to move up to the eighth spot in the league standings, while KKR remained in the second spot despite their third loss of the season.

For the unversed, the top four teams in the league will qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. The top two teams will face each other in the first Qualifier, with the winner advancing straight into the final. The Eliminator will be contested by the teams placed third and fourth in the IPL 2024 standings. The winner of the Eliminator will then face off against the losing team from Qualifier 1. The winner of Qualifier 2 will advance to the final, which is scheduled to be held on May 26th.

KKR have won five out of nine games this season, which puts them in a good position to secure a spot in the playoffs. However, they still need to win a few more games to ensure they don’t suffer a sudden dip in form towards the end of the season. With 10 points from 8 games, they need at least four more points to qualify for the playoffs.

KKR will aim for hassle-free induction in playoffs

In the past, some teams have made it to the playoffs with 14 points, but they usually finish in third or fourth place. To maximize their chances of finishing in the top two and leverage the perks, KKR should aim to win three out of their remaining six games.

“Both the teams played tremendously, one of those games where you go back to the drawing board and see where it went wrong especially not being able to defend 260. We have to sum up the conditions and come up with better ideas. It is brilliant to see him (Narine) go out there and strike the ball, hopefully, he keeps continuing with such performances,” KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said at the post-match presentation.

IPL 2024 Qualification Scenarios: How can Lucknow Super Giants qualify for playoffs losing to KKR?

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered their third loss of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 28 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After being put in to bat first, LSG posted a decent score of 161/7 in their allotted 20 overs with Nicholas Pooran top scoring with his knock of 45 (32).

In reply, KKR comfortably chased down the target in just 15.4 overs as Philip Salt (89* off 47) and captain Shreyas Iyer (38* off 38) guided their team home with their unbeaten 120-run stand and sealed an eight-wicket win for their team. Following their loss, LSG now find themselves at the middle of the points table on the fifth spot with three wins from six matches having six points to their name.

The KL Rahul-led side started its campaign with a 20-run loss against Rajasthan Royals (RR) but made a brilliant comeback with three consecutive victories against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Gujarat Titans (GT). However, their campaign has once again gone astray after back-to-back losses against Delhi Capitals (DC) and KKR.

Despite, their consecutive losses, LSG still have a positive net run rate of +0.038. However, the road ahead is tougher for them as they have back-to-back fixtures against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) both home and away on April 19 and 23 respectively. Lucknow will have the herculean task of bouncing back to winning ways against the defending champions who’re coming into the fixture after winning their last two fixtures.

LSG to play four out of the next five games at home

After CSK, LSG will play three consecutive fixtures at home against RR, Mumbai Indians (MI) and KKR. Hence, the KL Rahul-led side will have an advantage of playing in familiar conditions in four out of the next five games and one away fixture at Chennai which has similar conditions as Lucknow.
