  • Rashmika Mandanna and Tamannaah Bhatia set to perform at the IPL 2023 Opening ceremony

Rashmika Mandanna and Tamannaah Bhatia set to perform at the IPL 2023 Opening ceremony

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 is all set to begin at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31. The opening match will be played between the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK). This year, the IPL will return to its original ‘home-and-away’ format after the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to be played in a bio-secure bubble in the UAE. The league will feature 10 teams divided into two groups and will play 70 league fixtures.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering to organise an opening ceremony for the IPL 2023. This would be the first opening ceremony since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. The BCCI hopes to make the occasion even more glamorous by inviting Bollywood A-list stars to the event. According to reports, actresses Rashmika Mandanna and Tamannaah Bhatia will be performing in the opening ceremony and adding to the glam factor.

The opening ceremony is expected to begin at around 7:30 pm IST on March 31, just before the tournament opener.

“Yes, there will be an opening ceremony on the 31st. It will be a short one but as the home and away format returns, we felt it was necessary to welcome back the home crowd with a ceremony,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying to InsideSport.

The first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, which took place last month, also featured a glamorous opening ceremony. Bollywood stars Kriti Sanon, Kiara Advani and Punjabi pop sensation AP Dhillon performed at the event.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI decided not to organise an opening ceremony for IPL 2019 in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack. The BCCI’s decision to consider an opening ceremony this year shows its determination to make the IPL 2023 a grand event.

During the league stage of the tournament, each team will play 14 matches, with seven games at home and seven away. The teams are divided into two groups, and each team will face the other four teams in the same group twice. They will also play against the other five teams once each. With 70 matches to be played across 12 venues over the course of 52 days, the IPL 2023 promises to be an action-packed and exciting tournament.

  • Virat Kohli picks the best and worst runner between the wickets in an interview with AB de Villiers

Virat Kohli picks the best and worst runner between the wickets in an interview with AB de Villiers

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just around the corner, and the excitement for the marquee event is clearly evident among the fans. The players taking part in the league have also started joining their team camps to train for the forthcoming tournament. However, many star Indian players haven’t yet begun preparing for IPL 2023, as they are currently representing India in the three-match ODI series against Australia.

Although despite being busy, India’s star batter Virat Kohli took out time ahead of the final ODI against the Aussies and indulged in a fun chat session with his former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate AB de Villiers. During the discussion, Virat talked about many diverse topics on ‘”The 360 Show” and also answered some interesting questions. The 34-year-old cricketer, on being asked about the fastest and worst runner between the wickets he played along, named MS Dhoni as the best and Cheteshwar Pujara as the worst. While Virat was quick enough to term Dhoni as the the fastest, he hesitated to pick the worst runner.

“Ofcourse, its not even a question, I have been asked this question before, AB (De Villiers) has by far been the fastest I have run with between wickets, the only other guy I had so much coordination and understanding with was MS (Dhoni). Now I don’t know about the speeds between the wickets, but with him and MS I would not even have to call,” said Virat.

After being insisted by AB to also name the worst runner, the former India captain added: “Controversial one. Cheteshwar Pujara. It was a Centurion Test match on the tour of 2018. He was run out in both the innings.”

On the other hand, AB chose Faf du Plessis as the fastest after the co-host told him that he could not choose Virat. Notably, the veteran South Africa cricketer and Virat have played eleven seasons together for the Bangalore-based team.

“I’ve never played with MS, or else he would have been right up my list as well. Definitely Faf Du Plessis,” said the former Proteas skipper.

  • IPL 2023: RCB add Michael Bracewell to their squad as replacement player

IPL 2023: RCB add Michael Bracewell to their squad as replacement player

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been added to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He will replace England batter Will Jacks for IPL 2023.

Jacks, who recently pulled out of the tournament due to injury, was bought by the Bengaluru-based franchise for INR 3.2 Crore at the 2023 IPL Auction in December last year. He is an attacking right-handed batter and also a handy off-spinner. RCB considered him an ideal cover for Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who has had his injury issues in the past and only returned to action in the ongoing ODI series against India.

Meanwhile, Bracewell – who went unsold earlier in action – has played 16 T20Is for the Blackcaps, scoring 113 runs and taking 21 wickets. The left-hander will join RCB at his base price of INR 1 crore.

Bracewell grabbed the attention of fans and experts after smashing a breathtaking century against India in the first ODI at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in January this year.

In a T20 career of 117 matches, he has 2284 runs at a strike rate of 133.48 and 40 wickets with an economy rate of 6.52. He will join captain Faf du Plessis, Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazlewood, Reece Topley, David Willey and countrymate Finn Allen as the overseas players at the RCB camp.

The Challengers will start their IPL 2023 campaign against Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 2. It will be their first fixture at their home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, since May 2019.

  • Harbhajan Singh reacts hilariously after Babar Azam picks BBL as his favourite over IPL

Harbhajan Singh reacts hilariously after Babar Azam picks BBL as his favourite over IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is widely regarded as the most prestigious T20 league in the world, featuring the best players from around the globe. However, there are other T20 leagues as well, such as the Big Bash League (BBL), the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the South Africa T20 League (SA20).

Recently, a video surfaced online in which Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team, was asked to pick his favourite between the IPL and BBL. Surprisingly, Babar chose the Australian T20 league over the Indian one.

“IPL or Big Bash, which league do you like the most?”, Babar was asked.

Explaining his choice, Babar said that the conditions in Australia are different, with fast and bouncy pitches that help players learn a lot. In contrast, he believes that the conditions in the IPL are similar to those in Pakistan, which means that players don’t get as much exposure to different conditions.

“The conditions over there in Australia are different. The pitches over there are really fast and you get to learn a lot. Whereas in IPL, you get the same Asian conditions,” Babar said in response to the query.

Babar’s comments various reactions from fans on social media, with some supporting his choice and others expressing disappointment that he won’t be playing in the IPL.

Even former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh couldn’t resist sharing his views on Babar’s comments, reacting with a laughing emoji on Twitter.

Despite the mixed reactions, Babar’s preference for the BBL shows his dedication to improving his game by playing on different types of pitches.

Currently, Babar is busy with the PSL Season 8, where he is leading Peshawar Zalmi. He recently played a brilliant innings of 64 runs from 39 balls, leading his team to a victory over Islamabad United. The win meant that Islamabad were eliminated from the race to the final, while Peshawar advanced to the Eliminator 2. With his impressive performances, Babar has become a vital player for his team and is expected to play a key role in the upcoming match.

  • Shreyas Iyer’s back scans not promising; may not play Australia ODIs and the IPL

Shreyas Iyer’s back scans not promising; may not play Australia ODIs and the IPL

The result of Shreyas Iyer’s back scan is out, and it is not encouraging. As a result, he may not be able to play in the upcoming ODI series against Australia and may also miss the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Iyer is now a doubtful starter for both events. He will have to undergo some more injury tests and be treated by a specialist.

It is important to note that Iyer was previously ruled out of the ODI series against New Zealand in January due to a back injury. Rajat Patidar replaced him in the squad. The BCCI had issued a statement saying that he would be going to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management. Iyer’s injury resurfacing now raises questions about the functioning of the NCA, as this is not the first time such an injury has occurred.

It is expected that the selectors, who are currently present in Ahmedabad, will take a call regarding Iyer’s participation in the ODIs against Australia.

Earlier, after Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal in the ongoing fourth Test against Australia, Iyer did not come out to bat, and Srikar Bharat took the field instead. It was later revealed that Iyer complained of lower back pain after the third day’s play and had gone for scans.

“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI statement on Sunday morning read.

As far as the match is concerned, India put up a strong response to Australia’s first innings total of 480. Middle-order batter Virat Kohli played a crucial role in this, scoring his 28th Test ton and just missing out on a double century as he fell on 186.

The Australian openers were unbeaten at 3/0 and still trail by 88 runs at the end of Day 4.

  • Netizens spark meme fest as Jasprit Bumrah reportedly set to miss the IPL 2023

Netizens spark meme fest as Jasprit Bumrah reportedly set to miss the IPL 2023

India’s star fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, still hasn’t recovered from the back injury he sustained last year. The right-arm pacer is likely not to take part in the marquee Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Notably, Bumrah missed the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia due to the same injury.

At first, there were speculations of Bumrah returning to action in the last two Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023, but the 29-year-old pacer, due to not being fully fit, was left out by the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI). He was not even named in the One Day International (ODI) team of the Men in Blue that will take on Australia after the conclusion of Test series.

The selection committee took the call so as not to stress Bumrah and give him proper time to recover fully ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup that will be played in India later this year. However, fans were confident that the Gujarat cricketer would return to the field in IPL 2023 for the Mumbai Indians. But their hopes got shattered as in a report by Cricbuzz, it was recently revealed that Bumrah is likely set to miss both IPL 2023 and India’s possible World Test Championship final.

While many were left disappointed with the news, some on social media sparked a meme fest and shared some hilarious posts reacting to the update. On that note, let’s have a look at the meme galore by netizens on Twitter:

  • ‘Would be great to have MS Dhoni..’: Aiden Markram wants Dhoni to play SA20

‘Would be great to have MS Dhoni..’: Aiden Markram wants Dhoni to play SA20

MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the most successful captains in the history of cricket and has a lot of admirers across the globe. The newly appointed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Aiden Markram is also among those who is a follower of Dhoni and respects him immensely.

Markram recently expressed his desire to share the dressing room with the former India captain and admitted that he would love to see Dhoni play in the SA20 league. The 28-year-old Proteas cricketer said that the veteran wicket-keeper’s experience could be very useful for the young talents in South Africa.

“To be honest with you, someone like MS (Dhoni) would be great to have in your camp just for the guys to be able to learn from him. He has got all the knowledge and seen everything that this game has produced. For our local players in South Africa to be able to spend time with someone like MS Dhoni would be great. That’s one that comes to my mind, firstly but there would be a lot of players that would be discussed for sure,” said Markram in a press conference.

Notably, Dhoni has led India to multiple World Cup triumphs and is the only skipper in the world to win all three major ICC trophies. The 41-year-old Ranchi cricketer has also clinched four Indian Premier League (IPL) titles for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise so far.

On the other hand, in the inaugural SA20 league, Markram guided Sunrisers Eastern cape to their maiden title and will next be seen leading SRH in the upcoming IPL edition, which starts from March 31.

Apart from Dhoni, Markram also talked about the possible vice-captain of SRH in the forthcoming IPL and said that it would be tough to choose between Mayank Agarwal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

“It’s a tough one. I have played under Mayank Agarwal at Kings for half a season. He and I got on really well. On the other hand, if you look at the amount of experience someone like Bhuvi has, it’s almost irreplaceable. So to pick one is a difficult one, right now. But both of them would nail it certainly,” added the South Africa cricketer.

  • IPL 2023: David Warner to lead Delhi Capitals; Sunrisers Hyderabad appoints Aiden Markram as their captain

IPL 2023: David Warner to lead Delhi Capitals; Sunrisers Hyderabad appoints Aiden Markram as their captain

Although there’s still a month to go for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 to kick start, teams have already started preparing for the marquee event. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced Aiden Markram as their new captain for the forthcoming tournament.

SRH franchise took to Twitter to declare Markram as their new skipper. The South African all-rounder recently led SRH’s sister franchise, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, to their title triumph in the inaugural SA20 in Johannesburg. The 29-year-old right-handed batter showcased tremendous determination both as a leader and as a player in the SA20 league. He also won the player-of-the-tournament award for smashing 366 runs and scalping 11 wickets in the maiden event.

“THE. WAIT. IS. OVER. #OrangeArmy, say hello to our new captain Aiden Markram” tweeted the SRH official handle.

Notably, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson captained SRH in the last season but failed miserably in his role as the skipper, and the Hyderabad-based franchise ended their campaign at the last position of the points table. Following the disappointing run of the team, Williamson was released by the SRH management ahead of this year’s auction, where Gujarat Titans acquired his services.

In the 2023 edition of the IPL, SRH will play their first match against Rajasthan Royals on April 2.

In the meantime, since Rishabh Pant is still recovering from the injuries sustained in a horrific car crash and will not be able to participate in the upcoming IPL edition, Delhi Capitals (DC) have decided to appoint Australia’s star opener David Warner as their new captain.

“David will be our captain and Axar Patel will be his deputy,” said a member of the DC’s ownership group, as reported by Cricbuzz.

It was actually head coach Ricky Ponting who suggested Warner’s name to the management due to the latter’s vast experience in the format. On the other hand, India all-rounder Axar Patel will be Warner’s deputy in the 2023 edition of IPL.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be back with its 16th edition to entertain avid supporters in March-April. In the tournament, nine teams will strive to snatch the trophy from the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), who are the defending champions. At the mini-auction in December, the franchises did some record purchases, spending an enormous amount to strengthen their sides. In the upcoming tournament, the teams will expect their players to be marvellous and deliver their best to win the title. However, these teams will have to bolster every department to make it possible.

In the last 15 editions of the tournament, cricket fans have witnessed how the finishers have played an imperative role in their team’s victories. The most successful IPL sides, such as Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reaped the benefits of having top finishers in their arsenal. In the 2022 edition, the current IPL champions Gujarat Titans (GT) also gained advantage of having some quality finishers. In the upcoming edition, the franchises will count on their players who could take them home with their sensational match-finishing abilities.

Here are the rankings of the top 10 finishers ahead of IPL 2023

    10. Rahul Tewatia

In 2020, Rahul Tewatia hit the headlines when the left-hand batter turned the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Rajasthan Royals’ favour. With his outstanding innings of 53 runs off 31 deliveries, the Haryana-born helped his team to chase a target of 224 with three balls to spare. The memorable innings soared Tewatia’s popularity as he became a household name.

In the 2022 mini-auction, Gujarat Titans (GT) signed Tewatia at a hefty amount of INR 9 crore. Trusting his power-hitting abilities, the franchise assigned him the task of fortifying the batting line-up with his match-finishing skills. Batting in the lower order for GT, Tewatia looked impressive scoring 217 runs in 12 innings at a spectacular strike rate of 147.61.

Against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Tewatia showed his brilliance again as he rescued his team from a defeat with his two back-to-back sixes. The talented left-hander took his team home against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as well, with his 43-run innings off 25 deliveries. Witnessing his batting displays last season, the team management will expect him to be efficient in the upcoming tournament too.
