Premier League midweek fixtures: talkSPORT brings you football bonzana

The Premier League action shows no sign of slowing down, and this week, you can follow EVERY game across the talkSPORT network.

We are straight into gameweek 27 with more midweek matches, and there’s plenty up for grabs as the top-flight approaches the run-in.

    5

The Premier League is serving us a great season

All 10 midweek fixtures will be on our network, bringing you every goal and all of the action as it happens.

And there are some very juicy ties indeed.

On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Manchester City as Spurs look to do the double over the Premier League champions.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men thrashed Pep Guardiola‘s side 4-0 at the Etihad in late 2024 before enduring a terrible run of form.

    Read more on Premier League

However, with a few players back from injury, Spurs have won their last three league fixtures.

Meanwhile, City have slightly improved in recent weeks, but a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday showed just how far away they are from being back to their best.

Still, they are well in the race for Champions League football, and three points here would be huge.

Elsewhere, Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest, knowing that the Tricky Trees can move just three points behind them with a win.

The Gunners’ title challenge for this season is all but over after a 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

Liverpool then beat City to take an 11-point lead over Mikel Arteta‘s men.

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

    5

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

Of course, Arsenal players will insist the title race isn’t over, but it would require an almighty slip-up from Liverpool for this to even be a possibility now.

Instead, the Gunners just have to ensure they claim Champions League football and second place.

Meanwhile, Forest have lost their last two in the Premier League to Fulham and Newcastle, respectively.

But Nuno Espirito Santo will be encouraged by his team’s comeback at St James’ Park at the weekend, where they came from 4-1 down to narrowly lose 4-3.

Certainly, this won’t be an easy game for Arsenal.

Wednesday night also sees Newcastle United visit Anfield in a dress rehearsal of the Carabao Cup final at Wembley next month.

The Reds have one hand on the Premier League trophy now, but Arne Slot will want his side to keep being relentless.

The chance of a treble is there, but the Toon gave Liverpool a very hard game when they met earlier this season.

At St James’ Park, these two served up a thrilling 3-3 draw, and Eddie Howe‘s men will be looking to make a statement ahead of the Carabao Cup final meeting between the two later this month.

On Tuesday, we have Chelsea taking on Southampton, with the Blues looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

There is a south coast derby between Brighton and Bournemouth, which promises to be full of goals.

Wolves are edging away from the relegation places, and they welcome Fulham.

Meanwhile, resurgent Crystal Palace host Aston Villa, with Unai Emery‘s side looking to close the gap on those above them chasing European football.

Wednesday night also sees Manchester United in action against Ipswich Town.

Micah Richards pinpoints moment he knew Mo Salah would become a superstar

The Red Devils just about salvaged a 2-2 draw against Everton at the weekend, but the performance from Ruben Amorim‘s men was far from convincing.

Certainly, the Tractor Boys will go there feeling they can get something.

And the final game sees Brentford host Everton.

The Bees couldn’t stop winning at home in the first part of the season but are winless in five league matches at the Gtech, while Everton are finding some form under David Moyes.

And on Thursday, Graham Potter will hope to see West Ham build on their brilliant win over Arsenal, while Leicester must bounce back from being thrashed by Brentford.

So, there are plenty of excellent fixtures, and here is how you can follow them all across the talkSPORT network.

Manchester City fans could not resist poking fun at Manchester United during their latest win.

The Premier League champions cruised to a 6-0 thrashing of Ipswich on Sunday afternoon.

Phil Foden scored twice, while goals from Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and James McAtee helped the visitors maintain their upturn in form.

It is the 13th time City have scored six or more goals in the Premier League under Pep Guardiola.

That tally draws the Spaniard level with Arsene Wenger at Arsenal and he is now just one behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s record as United boss.

City’s comfortable victory came just a couple of hours after another defeat for their bitter rivals.

United were beaten 3-1 at Old Trafford by Brighton as Ruben Amorim’s woes worsened.

With City already in control at Portman Road shortly after the start of the second half, the travelling fans could be heard taking aim at the Red Devils.

Chants of ‘you’re going down with United’ were sang towards the hosts after Doku stroked in a fourth for his side.

Meanwhile, ‘City’s staying up’ also rang around the away end as supporters made light of their own struggles this term.

Guardiola’s side endured a run of one win in 13 matches across all competitions earlier in the campaign.

However, City’s latest win has extended their unbeaten run to six and lifted the champions back into the top four.

There is no such good fortune for United, though, although a first relegation since 1974 remains unlikely.

The defeat to Brighton leaves the Red Devils 13th in the table after a tenth loss from 22 league matches.

With a ten-point gap to the bottom three, however, they are closer to the drop zone than the top four, which is 12 points away from their grasp.

As four City, their win sees them leapfrog Newcastle into fourth place on goal difference.

The champions remain 12 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand on those below them.

Both City and United are in European action in midweek before their attention returns to the Premier League.

    Bowen boost

Graham Potter believes Jarrod Bowen is ahead of schedule in his return from injury at West Ham.

The Hammers captain suffered a fractured foot in their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the end of 2024.

There were initial fears that Bowen could sidelined for a lengthy period of time, but there appears to be positivity over his recovery.

On Monday, Potter said: “I think if you speak to Jarrod, he will try to tell you he’s ahead of schedule, for sure.

“He’s doing everything he can to get on the pitch as soon as possible. We just need to make sure it’s in a safe way and it’s [in] a good way for him, because we want to get him back and we want him to stay back.

“But you know Jarrod, he wants to be out there, he wants to play and we’re trying to pull the reins on him rather than the other way around. He’s fantastic to have around the place.”

Potter added: “He’s just champing at the bit and he wants to get out and help. But he just has to take his medicine at the moment and just do his rehab properly.

“He was out jogging today with the individual physio, so it’s positive. I think if I’m looking at it now, Jarrod will be ahead of schedule rather than behind schedule.

“It’s not a rocket scientist prediction, that is it really.”

  • Ben Godfrey set for Premier League return with eight clubs interested

Ben Godfrey set for Premier League return with eight clubs interested

Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey is in advanced talks over a move to Ipswich, talkSPORT understands.

The Englishman joined Serie A side Atalanta from Everton in June in a £10million deal, but is now set for a return to English football after just over six months away.

    3

Godfrey has been told he can leave the Italian side and that he is no longer part of the club’s plans.

As many as eight clubs have registered an interest in the centre-back, with Leeds and Tottenham among the rumoured potential suitors.

However, Godfrey is believed to favour a move to Portman Road after being impressed by manager Kieran McKenna.

And the 26-year-old will surely be keen on a fresh start after his move to Italy failed to live up to expectations.

With Atalanta qualifying for this season’s Champions League following their Europa League victory in May, this appeared to be the next progression in Godfrey’s career.

But since joining the Lombardi outfit, he has made just one league appearance, and five in all competitions, all of which have come from the bench.

Most recently, he was left out of Atalanta’s squad list for their 2-0 Super Cup defeat to Inter Milan on Thursday.

And with Ipswich having shipped the fourth-most goals of any Premier League side this season, Godfrey would certainly bring some much-needed experience to their backline.

After starting his career with hometown club York City, he was snapped up by the Tractor Boys’ bitter rivals Norwich in 2016 aged 18.

Godfrey’s breakthrough season with the Canaries came in the 2018/19 campaign, where he featured in 31 league games as his side won the Championship title.

Though Norwich were relegated from the Premier League the following season, the young defender impressed, and signed for Everton in a deal rising to £25m in 2020.

Godfrey went on to spend four years at Goodison Park, making 93 appearances in all competitions.

He also made his senior England debut during this time, having previously been capped at Under-20 and Under-21 level.

The York native was named in Gareth Southgate‘s Euro 2020 33-man provisional squad, and made his senior debut in a pre-tournament friendly win over Austria, despite ultimately not making the final 25-man cut.

Godfrey will certainly be facing a totally different challenge should he swap Serie A leaders Atalanta for Ipswich.

Kieran McKenna’s side find themselves locked into a relegation battle, sitting 18th in the Premier League table, after gaining promotion from the Championship at the end of last season.

Supercomputer condemns three teams to relegation but Wolves could be safe

Christmas is a joyful occasion for many, but some of the Premier League’s lower-ranking sides may have slightly muted celebrations.

This season’s relegation battle is already starting to take shape with 17 matchweeks played as we head towards 2025.

Southampton are rock bottom of the table at Christmas with just a single win to their name alongside a whopping 13 defeats.

Ipswich Town, who have been playing Premier League football for the first time since 2002, are above them on 12 points from a possible 51.

Wolves are only ahead of the Tractor Boys on goal difference in the first of three relegation spots amid a shaky campaign.

With the season’s halfway point season just around the corner, Opta’s Supercomputer has predicted which sides could be relegated.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

    Southampton – 20th

A disastrous Premier League return for Southampton has seen them drop to the bottom of the standings with a whimper.

The Saints recently sacked Russell Martin and have announced Ivan Juric as his successor although it could be too little, too late.

As per Opta, there is a 97.8 per cent chance that Southampton will be relegated to the Championship this season.

Only four clubs who have sat bottom of the table at Christmas have survived in all 32 Premier League seasons before now.

West Brom, Sunderland, Leicester City and Wolves have all done so, but it looks unlikely that they’ll be joined by the Saints in 2025.

The newly-appointed Juric has arrived at a club who are eight points adrift of safety and conceded the third most goals with 36.

Southampton’s next five Premier League fixtures

December 26 – Southampton vs West Ham – St Mary’s

December 29 – Crystal Palace vs Southampton – Selhurst Park

    January 4 – Southampton vs Brentford – St Mary’s

January 16 – Manchester United vs Southampton – Old Trafford

January 19 – Nottingham Forest vs Southampton – City Ground

However, his first five fixtures in charge present an opportunity for improvement, starting with 14th-place West Ham on Boxing Day.

They then face Crystal Palace and Brentford, but subsequent tests against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest will be tough.

    Ipswich Town – 19th

After over a decade away from the English top flight, Ipswich have certainly been given a tough welcome back to the big time.

They have won two matches so far, including a shock 2-1 victory away at Tottenham, whilst holding Aston Villa and United to draws.

However, there have been heavy defeats to Manchester City, West Ham and Newcastle and are certainly in the mix to go down.

Opta predict a 76.9 per cent chance of Kieran McKenna’s side being relegated, giving them clear distance ahead of Southampton.

Ipswich’s next five Premier League fixtures

December 27 – Arsenal vs Ipswich – Emirates Stadium

December 30 – Ipswich vs Chelsea – Portman Road

January 5 – Fulham vs Ipswich – Craven Cottage

January 16 – Ipswich vs Brighton – Portman Road

January 19 – Ipswich vs Manchester City – Portman Road

Ipswich are only two points away from being outside of the bottom three and have quality players capable of helping achieve this.

Liam Delap has scored six goals in 16 appearances since his summer signing, and Leif Davis continues to be an exciting talent to watch.

Their upcoming matches could emerge as a stumbling block though as both Arsenal and Chelsea await them over the festive period.

A trip to Fulham is then followed by the visit of Brighton before City arrive at Portman Road later in January.

    Wolves – 18th

After a winless run of ten matches, Wolves finally picked up their first Premier League win of the season on November 9.

Three points have followed on just two occasions since though, with Gary O’Neil being relieved of his duties earlier this month.

Wolves have conceded 40 goals so far this season, which is the worst record out of all 20 teams in the top flight.

Despite this, they kept a clean sheet on Sunday when they travelled to Leicester and won 3-0 in Vitor Pereira’s first match as boss.

The former Porto, Fenerbahce and Al Shabab manager will be aware of the quality of Matheus Cunha, who has scored nine goals this season.

Jorgen Strand Larsen has also been a top signing for the club, with the Norwegian netting six since joining on loan from Celta Vigo.

But Wolves have a tricky set of fixtures on the horizon, starting with United on Boxing Day, and a 52.4 per cent chance of relegation.

They then await tests against Spurs, Forest, Newcastle and Chelsea, with the opening weeks of 2025 certainly set to be challenging.

Wolves’ next five Premier League fixtures

December 26 – Wolves vs Manchester United – Molineux

December 29 – Tottenham vs Wolves – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

January 6 – Wolves vs Nottingham Forest – Molineux

January 15 – Newcastle vs Wolves – St. James’ Park

January 20 – Chelsea vs Wolves – Stamford Bridge

    Leicester City – 17th

Although Leicester are currently outside of the bottom three, Opta predict them to face the drop this season.

The Foxes have been given a 62 per cent chance of relegation, which is nearly ten per cent less than Wolves who are below them.

Steve Cooper, formerly of rivals Forest, took charge at the beginning of the season but was sacked after just five months in charge.

United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has since been named as his replacement but he has only won one of his first four matches.

Leicester’s 37 goals conceded is the second highest in the Premier League and their -16 goal difference is second worst with Ipswich.

Victory has come only once in their last nine matches and it won’t become any easier from here.

It’s going to be a tough second half of the season for those at the bottom

Liverpool and City are their next two league opponents, with the former coming at home and the latter away.

Villa, Palace and Fulham follow in the New Year, with a relegation battle not out of the question.

Everton and Crystal Palace at risk too?

A 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea has extended Everton’s unbeaten run to three in the league and has them four points above the drop.

The Toffees also have a game in hand after their Merseyside derby at home to Liverpool was postponed.

Sean Dyche’s side only have a 7.8 per cent chance of being relegated according to Opta, though they’ll have to be ensure they don’t get complacent.

Below them in 16th are Palace, who are only -1 behind them on goal difference.

They were thumped 5-1 at home by Arsenal at the weekend and only have three wins from 17 matches.

However, Opta predict there is just a 1.6 per cent chance of the south London outfit being relegated this season.

    Ivan the Saint

talkSPORT understands that Southampton are set to appoint Ivan Juric as their new manager to replace Russell Martin.

The Croatian is a free agent after he was sacked by Roma in November after a 3-2 loss at home to Bologna, a game in which the club’s ultras walked out of at half time to show their distaste for the boss.

The Saints have long tracked Juric, and he had been under consideration to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl two years ago.

Juric is in England today to speak to Southampton.

He lasted just three months at Roma after he was picked to replace Daniele De Rossi.

If he is to be made the Saints new boss, he will hope to last longer.

Of course, there is plenty for Guardiola to talk about after City lost the Manchester derby 2-1, while Arteta will most likely speak about his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final draw against Newcastle and the title race.

Arsenal failed to overtake Chelsea as they drew 0-0 with Everton and ten-man Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Fulham.

Newcastle United thrashed Leicester City 4-0 whilst Ipswich Town won their second game of the season with a stoppage-time winner at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The evening kick-off was arguably the best of the lot as Nottingham Forest came from behind and beat Aston Villa 2-1.

With huge results occurring at both the top and bottom of the table, talkSPORT duo Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy reveal their winners and losers from Saturday’s matches on the GameDay Phone-In…

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

    Winners

    Antonee Robinson

Robinson was one of the stars in a Fulham side that took the lead on two occasions against Liverpool at Anfield.

The left-back was tasked with a battle against one of the best players so far this season in Mohamed Salah and emerged as the victor.

Cundy said: “Antonee Robinson, left-back for Fulham. He’s an up and downer with quality…

“He had two assists today, but his all-round performance up against arguably, I mean probably, the best right-hand sided player in the Premier League for many a year, if not the very, very best.”

He added: “I’m talking about the very best right now, Salah, kept him very quiet. I know they go down to ten men, Liverpool, made it that much trickier, but take nothing away from his performance, I thought he was the best player on the pitch.”

    Jacob Murphy and Eddie Howe

Newcastle returned to St. James’ Park in desperate need of three points following a winless run of four matches in the Premier League.

The Magpies excelled against Leicester with their highest score of the season, with Murphy their first and fourth goals of the afternoon.

“Jacob Murphy gets two goals,” Cundy said, before heaping praise on the Newcastle boss. “Eddie Howe, his post-match presser there, he was talking about performances, how they need to be a bit more like that.

“Been a bit frustrating this season for Newcastle but they dispatched a side like Leicester where you should be doing that.

“That doesn’t always happen like that in football, but four flattered Leicester, I mean [Alexander] Isak missed a great one v one by the way, it was a poor finish by his standards.

“It could have been five, could have been six, could have been more, but well done Newcastle, they’re in that clutch in behind the top four at the moment.”

    Jack Taylor

Ipswich have taken a huge step towards climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone with a precious win away at Wolves.

A Matt Doherty own-goal put them ahead in the first half before an unmarked header from Taylor in stoppage-time sealed the deal.

Cundy explained: “Finally, Jack Taylor. Late, late, late, late goal which secures Ipswich [the win], massive.

“All the Tractor Boys heading back down to Suffolk right now will be… It’s one of those games, you know, that’s why you follow football, late winners like that.”

“It’s a free header, it’s a poor defensively conceded goal,” he added. “Take nothing away from Taylor. He’s there, right place, right time, well done Ipswich.”

    Losers

    Andy Robertson and Tony Harrington

Liverpool went down to ten men after just 16 minutes against Fulham after Robertson was dismissed for his tackle on Wilson.

He was adjudged to have denied a goalscoring opportunity, but Cundy believes referee Harrington is also worthy of being a loser this week.

“He’s in there, but [put] Tony Harrington in there mate as well, the ref, mate,” he said.

“So Robertson’s out?” asked O’Hara, and Cundy replied: “I don’t know about that mate. I’d like to hear a conversation in a quiet, dark room between the pair of them. Andy Robertson’s gone in there because…

“He got himself in a right mess by the way, it’s a poor tackle from him. Positionally, he’s given the referee a decision to make. [Harry] Wilson does well… I don’t think it’s a red card.

“When you give the ref a decision to make, they sometimes make decisions you don’t want them to make so he’s in but half in, him and Harrington can share it.”

    Gary O’Neil

Wolves boss O’Neil has come under increasing pressure of late as his side have won only twice all season.

Defeat at home to Ipswich leaves them four points adrift of safety and talkSPORT’s GameDay Phone-In hosts have expressed concern over his position as head coach.

“Oh Gaz, Gaz. That’s a terrible result for them, even 1-1 would have been great, a decision will have to be made very soon about that.

“Look, Gary’s been in football all his life, he knows the story, he’s not stupid, he knows what position he’s in, I fear for the safety of him moving forward because they look like they’re doomed at the moment.”

O’Hara said: “I think it might be time just to make a change, and it ain’t because he’s a bad manager…

“I think he’s a brilliant young manager,” Cundy then insisted. “I think he’ll go on to be brilliant. I think we’ll see him in the Premier League for many years to come.”

    Mikel Arteta

Arsenal had to settle for a sixth league draw of the season as they were unable to find a way past the struggling Everton at home.

Set piece goals have worked wonders for them of late but did not make a recurrence on Saturday, with one of Arteta’s substitutions being questioned.

“Got to go in there, bottled it!” former Tottenham man O’Hara shouted.

“People are talking about taking off Rice and [Odegaard], Odegaard’s the one,” said Cundy.

“I get Rice, Jorginho comes on, Jorginho’s a different type of midfielder than Rice, I get that, he’s a bit more creative than Rice.

“The Odegaard thing, the only thing I can think about with Odegaard is that he’s come back from injury about the last month. He’s played a lot of football, he’s been brilliant for them, really, really good, but when you need a goal, you want your top dog.

“Unless there’s a knock, unless we’re doing him a disservice, unless there is a niggle, which it didn’t appear to be the way he came off, I thought that was a very odd decision.”

Guehi defended on armband as Palace and Ipswich captains urged to clarify stance

Oliver Glasner insists Marc Guehi is ‘against discrimination and any abuse’ when quizzed on the player’s decision to write on his rainbow armband.

The Crystal Palace defender – who is the son of church minister – wrote ‘I love Jesus’ on the Stonewall armband in his side’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend.

After being warned by the Football Association for the message, he wrote ‘Jesus loves you’ with a smiley face on his rainbow armband at Portman Road for his side’s 1-0 over Ipswich on Tuesday.

The armbands are sent to clubs to be given to Premier League captains to wear in games to show support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport against Newcastle.

Glasner was asked about his captain’s decision when speaking to Amazon after the game.

“I think we should calm it down,” he said. “Everybody knows Marc, everyone knows he is a great player, he is a great personality. He is a very humble guy.

“He wore this. It’s LGBT and everyone now is about integration, no discrimination and Marc as well. I think we all have the same opinion.

“We are in sports and in sports we are always against discrimination and any kind of abuse, and Marc as well.”

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), ‘initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity’ are permitted.

However, it is forbidden to have ‘political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images’ written anywhere.

Ipswich captain Sam Morsy has also been in focus after choosing to ditch the rainbow armband totally, with the Tractor Boys citing his religious beliefs as his reason for refusing to wear it.

Egypt international Morsy is a practising Muslim.

Speaking about the pair’s decisions regarding the rainbow armbands, talkSPORT’s GameDay host Adrian Durham said on Tuesday night: “What is Morsy’s message to any gay fans or players as captain of Ipswich Town Football Club? What’s he trying to say to them?

“That needs to be clarified and if it doesn’t align with Ipswich’s club policy or the Premier League policy then Ipswich Town have a problem they need to resolve. They need to ask if their captain’s fit for the job of fulfilling all the roles required of him as a captain.

“Being a captain is more than tossing a coin in the centre circle before the game. It’s more than just shouting at your teammates. It’s about representing the club. So does your captain not wearing the armband reflect the feeling of the club?

“Has Kieran McKenna thought that through properly? Why not make someone else captain for the games with the rainbow armband?
So Morsi’s message to the LGBTQ community needs to be clarified and then Ipswich need to move forward from there.

“Same with Guehi who has written all over the rainbow armband. If Guehi’s aim was to deface and therefore devalue the message of the rainbow armband and the rainbow laces campaign then we need to ask why he would do that. Can he explain that to Stonewall?

“Could he explain that face to face with a gay Palace fan I wonder? If his message is that he’s worn the armband and supports the campaign but at the same time he loves Jesus then actually I’m okay with that. Not sure why he had to write all over the armband though.

“In both cases, as Premier League captains, they both need to make their position clear and if that then means they have to give up the captaincy because they’re not fit for the role within the club then so be it.”

Former Lionesses star and current talkSPORT co-host Lianne Sanderson agreed the captains need to come out and clarify their position.

“It’s interesting because I think people have a freedom of speech,” she said. “They can say whatever they want and people can say, ‘oh you know they shouldn’t have to wear it if they wanted to’. I think Marc Guehi equally similar to Morsy. I think they’re both in the wrong if I’m being honest.

“Marc Guehi doing that I think it was wrong. I think you know him putting you know I love Jesus on his armband. It’s an interesting one because I’m not really a religious person, Adrian.

“But I think it depends on someone’s perception of the bible and I think that’s where he’s going with that. And I love the fact that you’ve said these things Adrian because people don’t want to talk about these types of things.

“I think it’s easy for people to say, ‘oh yeah you would say that because you’re gay’ but that’s not the reality and I agree it’s how people feel. Now I don’t think someone needs to wear an armband all the time to prove they support our community.

Simon Jordan reacts to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi writing ‘I Love Jesus’ on his rainbow armband and Ipswich Town’s Sam Morsy refusing to wear it in the Premier League

“I want campaigns to be longer than a month to be honest and I think sometimes it is very much tokenism but it does hurt our community when players don’t want to do that. Now you’re in England and that’s the campaign so do that. The same as when I go to Qatar I respect that culture.

“Qataris love me. Yes there might be different people who have different opinions about those situations but I respect that culture. So I think you know it’s a massive kick in the teeth that they did this but I think with Marc Guehi doing that he was proving a point.

“So I think they do need to come out and have something to say. I really do. They’re leaders of the club and you’re right. It’s not just about you know tossing the coin in the centre circle.

“It’s much more than that and I think it does affect our community and it’s unfortunate that people still feel this way. Wearing an armband like when I saw John McGinn wearing it the other night I was like, ‘that’s actually really powerful’ but I thought the days were gone Adrian where this would be a talking point because it’s just an armband but it means so much to our community.

“So I have a split like opinion on it with regards to whether I think players should have to do X, Y and Z I think they should want to do it, if I’m being honest.”

And former England striker Dean Ashton thinks Guehi and Morsy’s moves have detracted from the positive impact that Stonewall’s campaign with the Premier League does have.

    Guehi is a devout Christian

However, he believes their moves don’t signify ‘standing absolutely against’ LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.

“Well I think it’s such a great point about the captaincy itself because ultimately that is who we’re looking at,” Ashton said. “We’re looking at two players. We’re not looking at the 11 players. We’re looking at the captains because of what that armband represents certainly with this campaign and therefore if you choose to either not wear it or you write on it you are effectively making a point with that.

“But I also think at the same time if you have to sort of take into account the fact that some certain players have had for their whole life and it might be part of their religion.

“If they choose not to do something there will be other players that aren’t the captains that maybe fall in the middle where they maybe don’t want to openly support a campaign but that doesn’t mean that they ultimately are totally against it.

“So I think we have sometimes got to be careful that just because somebody doesn’t do something that automatically means they are making a stand absolutely against it. But at the same time I think you’re right there has to be some clarity.

“If they are going to do that then I think it is really important for everybody to understand why and then have a perspective on it. At the moment it’s just up in the air and left for everybody to guess.

“Then it makes it about that rather than lots of other players that are more than happy – we talked about John McGinn – and other players that are happy to openly support the campaign and that’s then kind of missed.”

Durham concluded: “I agree the clarification of the individual standpoint is everything and I do believe it’s easily resolved that if a captain doesn’t want to wear it then you give it to another player who does want to wear it and he becomes the captain.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal and Palace’s 1-0 win lifts them out of the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Two Premier League clubs want Ipswich star Delap but can be thwarted by Man City

Chelsea and Manchester United are watching Ipswich star Liam Delap closely ahead of a possible transfer in the summer, talkSPORT understands.

The 21-year-old only joined the Tractor Boys in the summer in a £20million deal from Manchester City.

However, City could scupper any move to a rival as they have a buyback clause.

Delap has scored six goals in 12 Premier League games for Ipswich this season, with five of those coming in his last seven league appearances.

He has also started 11 times in the English top flight, underscoring his importance to Kieran McKenna‘s team.

Delap, the son of former Stoke City cult hero Rory, came through the ranks at Derby County before he moved to City’s academy in 2019.

The 21-year-old went on to make six appearances for City’s first team and even scored in an EFL Cup tie against Bournemouth in September 2020.

Delap soon got his first proper taste of men’s football when he moved to Stoke on a season-long loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

However, after making 22 appearances and scoring three goals for the Potters, City recalled Delap in January and sent him to fellow Championship side Preston North End to see out the term.

Delap was sent out to Hull City at the start of last season for his third loan spell.

It proved to be his most successful as he registered eight goals and two assists from 32 appearances across all competitions, helping the Tigers to a seventh-place finish in the Championship.

Delap’s form evidently caught the eye of Ipswich boss McKenna, who swooped for him in the summer.

But with Chelsea and United now sniffing around, the Portman Road faithful may be treated to just one season of Delap regardless of what division they begin next season in.

Another youngster with City ties generating Premier League buzz is 22-year-old midfielder James McAtee.

talkSPORT understands Crystal Palace are interested in the highly-rated youngster.

McAtee spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, but has stayed with Pep Guardiola’s first team squad.

It is understood the 22-year-old would cost around £20m and the player is thought to be keen on a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

McAtee is on track to make his most appearances in a season for City having featured for the reigning Premier League champions seven times this term.

With Ballon d’Or winner Rodri expected to be absent for the remainder of the season and Mateo Kovacic recently going down with an injury, the door is open for McAtee to play an increased role over the coming weeks.

As for Palace, boss Oliver Glasner is in desperate need of added creativity to ease the burden on star midfielder Eberechi Eze.

Glasner, who employs a 3-4-2-1 formation, would likely use McAtee as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the striker.

Palace sit 19th in the Premier League on eight points, one away from 17th-placed Wolves.
