Two Premier League clubs want Ipswich star Delap but can be thwarted by Man City

Chelsea and Manchester United are watching Ipswich star Liam Delap closely ahead of a possible transfer in the summer, talkSPORT understands.

The 21-year-old only joined the Tractor Boys in the summer in a £20million deal from Manchester City.

However, City could scupper any move to a rival as they have a buyback clause.

Delap has scored six goals in 12 Premier League games for Ipswich this season, with five of those coming in his last seven league appearances.

He has also started 11 times in the English top flight, underscoring his importance to Kieran McKenna‘s team.

Delap, the son of former Stoke City cult hero Rory, came through the ranks at Derby County before he moved to City’s academy in 2019.

The 21-year-old went on to make six appearances for City’s first team and even scored in an EFL Cup tie against Bournemouth in September 2020.

Delap soon got his first proper taste of men’s football when he moved to Stoke on a season-long loan for the 2022/23 campaign.

However, after making 22 appearances and scoring three goals for the Potters, City recalled Delap in January and sent him to fellow Championship side Preston North End to see out the term.

Delap was sent out to Hull City at the start of last season for his third loan spell.

It proved to be his most successful as he registered eight goals and two assists from 32 appearances across all competitions, helping the Tigers to a seventh-place finish in the Championship.

Delap’s form evidently caught the eye of Ipswich boss McKenna, who swooped for him in the summer.

But with Chelsea and United now sniffing around, the Portman Road faithful may be treated to just one season of Delap regardless of what division they begin next season in.

Another youngster with City ties generating Premier League buzz is 22-year-old midfielder James McAtee.

talkSPORT understands Crystal Palace are interested in the highly-rated youngster.

McAtee spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, but has stayed with Pep Guardiola’s first team squad.

It is understood the 22-year-old would cost around £20m and the player is thought to be keen on a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

McAtee is on track to make his most appearances in a season for City having featured for the reigning Premier League champions seven times this term.

With Ballon d’Or winner Rodri expected to be absent for the remainder of the season and Mateo Kovacic recently going down with an injury, the door is open for McAtee to play an increased role over the coming weeks.

As for Palace, boss Oliver Glasner is in desperate need of added creativity to ease the burden on star midfielder Eberechi Eze.

Glasner, who employs a 3-4-2-1 formation, would likely use McAtee as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the striker.

Palace sit 19th in the Premier League on eight points, one away from 17th-placed Wolves.

  • What Ipswich fan said to Roy Keane to spark furious bust-up at Portman Road

What Ipswich fan said to Roy Keane to spark furious bust-up at Portman Road

Roy Keane’s argument with an Ipswich Town fan stemmed from his time as the club’s manager as new details have come to light.

The Sky Sports pundit was caught on camera confronting a supporter at Portman Road on Sunday.

Following the Tractor Boys’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Keane left the broadcast desk to approach the stand.

He could then be seen going back and forth with a home fan and is understood to have responded to the abuse by inviting the supporter to continue their argument in the car park.

The Daily Mail now report that the altercation stems from Keane’s tenure as Ipswich boss between 2009 and 2011.

A witness claims the fan was angry with the Irishman for refusing to give his children an autograph and for being unpleasant when approached.

The witness told the Daily Mail: “The argument all stemmed from an issue with his children.

“The fan’s issue was about getting autographs back in the day when he was the manager here. The guy was basically saying Roy Keane ruled with fear.

“You could see him pointing to the car park because that is where the autographs were done, and that’s where he had the issue with Roy all those years ago. So, it makes sense they were pointing over there.”

As for Keane’s car park comment, the witness added: “What Roy said back could have been misconstrued.

“He might have wanted to talk in the car park as that’s where it all happened. It’s hard to tell. But yeah, he could have meant ‘I’ll talk to you in the car park,’ but it came across as if he was inviting him out [for a fight].”

The former midfielder replaced Jim Magilton as manager at Portman Road in April 2009 following his time in charge at Sunderland.

He went on to win 29 of his 81 matches during 21 months in the dugout.

Keane’s only full season in charge of the club saw Ipswich finish 15th in the Championship in 2010.

However, he left the role in January of the following year with his side 18th and just five points above the relegation zone.

The role remains Keane’s last as a manager, although he has since been an assistant for the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene move hijacked after £16m fee agreed

Everton are trying to hijack Ipswich’s move for Hull winger Jaden Philogene, talkSPORT understands.

The Toffees have agreed a £16million fee and believe Philogene favours a move to Goodison Park.

Crystal Palace are also keen on the former Aston Villa star, who Ipswich are desperate to land this summer.

The Tractor Boys had been ready to make a double swoop at Hull where Philogene looked set to join alongside Jacob Greaves in a £35m deal.

But Everton might have gatecrashed the party and are looking to steal Philiogene under Ipswich’s noses.

talkSPORT reported earlier this summer that Everton were interested in signing Philogene this summer.

Sean Dyche is desperate for more firepower after a disappointing season in front of goal.

Only Sheffield United scored less than the Toffees last season and Philogene would bolster Everton’s attack after a fine campaign for Hull in the Championship.

The 22-year-old made headlines in February when he scored a sensational goal in a 2-1 victory against Rotherham.

Dubbed the ‘goal of the century’ by fans, the forward left a defender for dead before pulling out an extraordinary rabona finish.

In total, Philogene scored 12 times for the Tigers last season in the Championship as they finished just outside the play-off spots, also chipping in with six assists.

Everton have been busy already this summer and announced the £9m signing of Tim Iroegbunam from Villa last month having been left impressed by the 20-year-old midfielder.

That transfer was followed up by the return of Jack Harrison on another season-long loan deal from Leeds.

The Merseyside outfit also look set to announce the acquisition of former Sheffield United ace Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille on a permanent transfer.

talkSPORT understands that the Ligue 1 side are hoping to recoup the majority of the £20m they paid the Blades in 2023.

Hull set to lose star duo to Premier League club in £35m double deal

Ipswich are confident of winning the race for Hull star Jaden Philogene, talkSPORT understands.

The Tractor Boys are aiming to compete a double swoop for the talented winger and Tigers teammate Jacob Greaves in a deal worth around £35million.

West Ham and Everton are also interested in Philogene, while Greaves has already been given permission to undergo a medical at Portman Road.

Ipswich are looking to strengthen their squad after securing promotion to the Premier League – their second promotion in two seasons under Kieran McKenna.

Having already signed Ben Johnson from West Ham and Omari Hutchinson in a blockbuster deal from Chelsea, Greaves would offer another ball-playing option at centre back.

Having made his first team breakthrough with Cheltenham, Greaves joined Hull in 2020 and has gone on to make 177 appearances as a left-sided centre-back.

As for Philogene, he is a product of the Aston Villa youth and enjoyed loan spells with Cardiff and Stoke City, before joining Hull last summer for an undisclosed fee.

Since then he has scored 12 goals for the Tigers – including a ‘goal of the century’ contender against Rotherham United.

While interest from the Premier League has been building, there’s also been reported interest from Barcelona regarding a blockbuster move to the Nou Camp.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Hull City president Acun Ilicali has admitted that he would never stand in the way of anyone who asked him to leave the club.

When asked if Barca were really keen on Philogene, Acun replied: “Yes, everything is true. But I told my fans that I would sign nobody.

“My idea in football is not to make money, my idea is to make a stronger and bigger club. But to make a bigger club, sometimes if a player says, ‘I want to go’, that is a different case.

Kieran McKenna reacts to signing a new contract at Ipswich Town until 2028 ahead of their return to the Premier League after interest from Manchester United and Chelsea

“For me, one player change is not the end of the world. But my players, I would never want to rein in their careers or their moves because of a contract I have.

“So in that case, if Jaden wants to move and he says he wants to go somewhere, this is something we cannot do too much about because this is his life.

“I love all my boys, I am responsible for their careers. So they don’t need to play with us if they don’t want to play with us.”

Ipswich table bid for £20m Championship star who made 2023/24 team of the season

Ipswich Town have tabled a big-money bid for Hull City defender Jacob Greaves, talkSPORT understands.

Hull are believed to value centre-back Greaves in excess of £20m.

    4

The defender was an immensely valuable asset to the Tigers last season, scoring twice in 43 appearances as he helped Hull to a seventh place finish in the Championship.

His performances earned him a place in the 2023/24 Championship Team of the Season as well as Hull City’s Player of the Year award.

The 23-year-old has been with the club since he was just eight years old, having spent just one loan spell at Cheltenham Town between 2019 and 2020.

The defender’s links with the club go back very far indeed as his father is none other than former Hull defender Mark Greaves.

But with Ipswich Town determined to make a strong start to their 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Greaves could be tempted by the allure of playing first tier football for Kieran McKenna’s side.

Ipswich earned promotion to the Premier League after a 22-year-absence and have been boosted by the news that their in-demand manager will remain at the helm of the club next season.

Meanwhile, Greaves is not the only Hull player who could be bidding farewell to the club this summer.

Winger Jaden Philogene is also on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs with talkSPORT having previously reported Everton’s interest in the 22-year-old.

While the striker would be a huge loss to Hull, the club owner Alcun Ilicali admitted to talkSPORT that if he wanted to leave, then the club would do better to sell him.

McKenna shuns Premier League interest to sign Ipswich deal that trebles wages

Ipswich have tied Kieran McKenna down to a new contract that reportedly trebles the manager’s wages.

The ex-Manchester United youth coach was on Chelsea and Brighton’s radar after guiding the Tractor Boys back to the Premier League in style.

In just two full seasons at Portman Road, McKenna has taken Ipswich from League One to the top-flight – narrowly missing out to Leicester for the Championship title.

talkSPORT recently reported that the 38-year-old was set to reject interest in order to continue his development at Ipswich.

And the Suffolk outfit have now confirmed McKenna has penned a new deal to stay on until 2028 with talkSPORT understanding his earnings are around the £3million-a-year mark.

Speaking to the club’s website, McKenna said: “I am extremely proud to have signed a new contract with the club.

“We have enjoyed incredible success together over the last two seasons and I’m excited to have the opportunity and responsibility of leading this fantastic club into its first season in the Premier League in 22 years.

“Preparation and planning for the challenge ahead has been ongoing since we won promotion at the beginning of May, with plenty of work still to do before the start of the new season at what is such an exciting time for everyone at the club.

“I am so happy to have committed my future to taking the next step with Ipswich Town and am really excited for what’s ahead as we continue this journey together.”

Ipswich CEO added: “We are delighted Kieran has further committed his future to the club.

“Success brings its own challenges and there has been considerable speculation in recent weeks, but Kieran and I have continued to communicate throughout, often several times a day, as we plan for the Club’s first Premier League season in a generation.

“For Kieran to have signed a new contract is a significant boost, heading into such an important campaign, as we continue the hard work in preparation for the coming season.”

Since taking over Ipswich in December 2021, he has won 75 out of his 131 matches in charge in all competitions – losing on just 20 occasions.

After just six months in the job, he took Ipswich to 11th in League One, before coming second the following campaign.

And in the 2023/24 campaign, Ipswich mustered a whopping 96 points from 46 Championship matches, where they lost just six matches.

They ended up just point behind champions Leicester, who at one stage were 17 points clear at the top.

McKenna quickly became a candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea, and he was also linked with a return to Manchester United.

Brighton have also been interested in the Northern Irishman as they eye their successor to Roberto De Zerbi but now look set to miss out.

As a result, Brighton are set to seek alternatives and they haven’t ruled out a move for former manager Graham Potter.

Having ended Ipswich’s 22-year absence from the Premier League, McKenna is on course to commit his future at Portman Road.

It means that the newly-promoted side have been handed a major boost as they prepare for a huge campaign ahead.

talkSPORT reported that McKenna was no longer a candidate for the vacancy at Chelsea, who are now eyeing Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca.

United, with whom he was previously assistant to Jose Mourinho, have also been a speculated destination amid the uncertain future of Erik ten Hag.

McKenna was also attracting interest from Brighton but the Seagulls are now set to search elsewhere for their De Zerbi replacement.
