And now Maguire and Grealish have been informed they too will be left at home this summer in a huge call from Southgate.
Meanwhile, James Trafford, Jarell Quansah and Jarrad Branthwaite are the other players omitted from the provisional squad.
It means England fans are only waiting on the official release of the 26-man squad for Euro 2024, which will include Eberechi Eze, Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton, who was highly praised by for his debut international display on Monday night.
England’s Euro 2024 26-man squad
Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).
Defenders: Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City).
Forwards: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).
Grealish, a £100million signing for Manchester City, has certainly not had his best year for the Premier League champions and England are well-stocked for wide options.
He managed just 20 appearances in the Premier League this season, scoring three times.
However, the loss of Maguire might hit Southgate harder, who has counted on the Manchester United defender in his back four throughout his time in charge.
It means that England will need to find a partner for John Stones at the back, with the options left including Marc Guehi, Joe Gomez, Lewis Dunk and Ezri Konsa.
Confirming his omission, Manchester United defender Maguire said he was ‘devastated’ to miss out but was still struggling with his fitness.
He has been a key player for the past three major tournaments and has 63 caps to his name.

Maguire said on X: “I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf.
“Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.
“For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me.
“If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.
“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”
Southgate had already decided to drop big names from his squad before unveiling his initial 33-man list including Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Ben White.
With Grealish and Maguire failing to make the final squad, Maddison was another high-profile name axed and the Tottenham star also posted an emotional message in reaction to the news on Thursday.
Faye Carruthers reveals that England stars Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish are expected to be cut from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad in major shock
Maddison said on social media: “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.
“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different and had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.
“I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”
The inclusions of Crystal Palace pairing Eze and Wharton, 25 and 20 years old respectively, show that the England boss has been keen to freshen up his side from previous tournaments such as the Qatar World Cup and Euro 2020.

Jack Grealish is no shrinking violet in the Manchester City dressing room and gives as good as he gets ahead of Euro 2024.
In a dressing room full of superstars priming themselves for the European Championship this summer, Grealish is dishing out the banter with England one of the favourites to win the competition.

Gareth Southgate might have one of the most exciting squads going into Euro 2024 but it will be no easy task claiming glory in Germany, with Bernardo Silva‘s Portugal, Kevin de Bruyne‘s Belgium and Rodri‘s Spain all likely to go far in the tournament.
And the cheeky jibes are already flying around the City changing rooms, with Grealish admitting he is one of the main instigators.
Speaking to Alan Brazil and Gabriel Agbonlahor on talkSPORT Breakfast, the 28-year-old revealed: “You know what it’s like in the dressing room, you turn around to a few people and go, ‘don’t worry mate, you’ll be going home in a few weeks anyway’.”
After Brazil asked him who is the lippy one in the changing rooms, Grealish confessed: “Probably me and Kyle [Walker]!
“Actually, do you know what, Manuel Akanji. He likes to give it out a little bit! There’s quite a few of us but not Erling [Haaland], this summer!”
Akanji’s Switzerland find themselves up against Scotland in the Euro 2024 group stage, as well as hosts Germany and Hungary while Steve Clarke’s side denied Haaland‘s Norway a chance to reach this year’s competition.
But Grealish remains confident in the Three Lions, who he has hailed as one of the best sides after Southgate named a young 33-man squad this week, omitting some big names.
Grealish added: “It is unbelievable, honestly. When you go and train there and the talent that is there is just frightening.

Southgate has made some big calls this summer and included several youngsters including Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton and Jarell Quansah
“I think now there is so much young talent coming through as well.
“The last few tournaments we have been close and in everyone’s mind we want to succeed in this tournament.
Gareth Southgate explains why he decided to leave out Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson from England’s Euro 2024 squad
“Listen, I think it is doable. We have a really good manager and a really good assistant in Gareth and Steve Holland and obviously, the talent in the team speaks for itself.”
England kickstart their Euro 2024 campaign on June 16 when they take on Serbia before facing Denmark and Slovenia in the group stage.
Southgate has already made some huge calls, including uncapped duo Adam Wharton and Jarell Quansah in his squad while leaving out England regulars Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford.
Manchester United star Luke Shaw was also included despite being injured since February while Chelsea captain Reece James has been left at home.
“This has been as complicated a group as I can remember picking,” Southgate said.
“There are a significant number injured – that will be apparent looking at the players who have missed the last few games of the season and some who are coming back for the last few games of the season.”
Marcus Rashford paid for his poor season as the Manchester United forward was left out of England boss Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday.
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Chelsea skipper Reece James were among the other big names to miss out on the squad, that must be trimmed to a maximum of 26 before the tournament in Germany begins.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is rewarded for the Eagles’ brilliant end to the Premier League season with his first-ever call up.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones are the other uncapped players selected with Southgate short on defensive options.
England face Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 and Iceland four days later before jetting off for Germany, where they are one of the favourites to win the tournament.
The wealth of options available to Southgate in attacking areas means Rashford misses out on a major international tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.
Rashford has scored just eight times in 42 appearances for his club this season and only recently returned from injury.
Rashford’s exclusion from the provisional England squad is what The Times’ Martin Samuel described as “a watershed moment” given how he’d often find himself included even if other players were in better form.
“Looking at the names of his forward selections, Rashford does not merit inclusion above any of them,” Samuel wrote.

“He may not even be first reserve, given Dominic Solanke was left out.
“His performances for Manchester United this season have been so ordinary, so lackadaisical, that even Old Trafford’s faithful have turned against him.”
Henderson’s move to Ajax in January after a short spell in Saudi Arabia has not done enough to earn the 33-year-old a place.
The fact Southgate was all too happy to leave Henderson, one of his most trusted lieutenants, out of the squad is why The Telegraph’s Oliver Brown believed his omission should count as “his greatest humiliation yet”.
“Henderson has long been one of the England manager’s hardiest perennials, so central to the cause that he was still serving as vice-captain in the two March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium,” Brown wrote.
“Eight weeks on, he no longer warrants even a spot in the extended squad. Indignities seldom come more scalding.
“While his move to Amsterdam was meant to have strengthened his case for a role at Euro 2024, it has merely consigned him to irrelevance.”

The same goes for Jadon Sancho despite his renaissance on his return to Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund on loan from United.
Raheem Sterling and Kalvin Phillips were also overlooked despite shining for Southgate in the past at major tournaments.
Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, who fired Manchester City to the Premier League title on Sunday, and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka are included as part of a fearsome collection of creative talent to supply England’s all-time top goalscorer Harry Kane.
England’s men begin their quest to win a major tournament for the first time in 58 years against Serbia on June 16 before facing Denmark and Slovenia in Group C.
PROVISIONAL ENGLAND EURO 2024 SQUAD
Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), James Trafford (Burnley)
Defenders: Kyle Walker, John Stones (both Manchester City), Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire (both Manchester United), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez (both Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Lewis Dunk (Brighton)
Forwards: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich/GER), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa), Ivan Toney (Brentford), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), James Maddison (Tottenham), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid/ESP), Phil Foden, Jack Grealish (both Manchester City), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)
Pep Guardiola slammed the “unacceptable” schedule that put fatigued Manchester City’s health at risk in their 1-0 win against Chelsea in an FA Cup semi-final scheduled just three days after their gruelling Champions League exit.
Guardiola was furious that the Football Association and television broadcasters set City’s semi-final for Saturday instead of giving them an extra day to recover after Wednesday’s penalty shoot-out loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Exhausted City were fortunate to survive a series of Chelsea misses at Wembley before Bernardo Silva’s 84th minute winner atoned for his penalty blunder in the shoot-out against Real.
Guardiola took aim at the authorities for putting his players’ futures in danger when they could have played Manchester United’s semi-final against Coventry on Saturday instead of Sunday because neither club was in European action this week.
“I’m incredibly happy to play the semi-finals of the FA Cup. I love to be in the quarter-final of the Champions League. But it’s unacceptable to let us play today,” Guardiola said.
“It is impossible for the health of the players. People don’t understand the punch in the face after losing in the Champions League and playing here so soon.
“Why they don’t give us one more day? Chelsea, Manchester United and Coventry don’t play in the Champions League. It is for broadcasters? OK don’t ask me to do extra things (for them).”

Guardiola insisted he would not speak to the sport’s governing bodies about his complaint because he is convinced they will not listen.
“I’m right, right? I’m not asking for some special privilege. It is a risk for their health, it is a risk for many things. I know they (the authorities) don’t care, but I care,” he said.
“In this country it is not going to change anything. I know it. They don’t have the sensitivity to the players. Don’t ask me to have meetings with the Premier League and the FA. I don’t go. I’m preparing the players.”
Guardiola’s rant was sparked by the obvious lethargy running through his side as they struggled to impose themselves against Chelsea.
Erling Haaland was sidelined by an injury sustained against Real, while Jack Grealish came off injured at Wembley and Rodri and Kyle Walker played through fitness issues.
City are back in action at Brighton in the Premier League on Thursday as they chase an unprecedented fourth successive title.
“After 120 minutes after Madrid, physically and emotionally, what they have done today is one of the most incredible things I have seen. We didn’t have time to prepare anything,” Guardiola said.
“Mentally it’s so tough to recover. Rodri, the way he played today, Kyle Walker, who was injured for a few weeks. How we survived I don’t know.

“I just want to protect my players. I do this for my players. It is unsustainable.
“We want to play football. We love to play football but it’s too much.”
While City eye the double, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino had to come to terms with a second loss at Wembley in a troubled first season in charge.
Beaten 1-0 by an inexperienced Liverpool line-up in the League Cup final in February, Chelsea once again paid for key misses, with Nicolas Jackson guilty of three woeful finishes.
“The most important thing is to be clinical and not concede. Even if we competed well, I cannot say we were the better side,” Pochettino said.
“We need to assess after nearly 10 months then take the decisions to improve in different areas and reduce the gap to teams like Manchester City.
“We are disappointed because the team is not matching the history of the club but we need to assess it in a different way.
“The evolution is good with all the circumstances but we need to be better next season.”
Jack Grealish must be included in England’s Euro 224 squad, according to his former boss Steve Bruce.
The Manchester City star progressed through the ranks with Aston Villa where he played under Bruce for two years as the club tried to earn promotion from the Championship.

Playing as Bruce’s captain, Grealish was Villa’s talisman which went a long way towards him earning a £100million move to Man City in 2021 after guiding his boyhood club to the top flight and safety from the drop.
Since then, the 28-year-old has won plenty of silverware including the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup with some stunning performances along the way.
But while his form this term has been less than impressive, Bruce still believes that he should be a part of Gareth Southgate‘s 23-man squad.
Asked if Grealish should be on the plane to Germany, Bruce told White & Jordan: “For me, yes.

“I’m going to because I’m a big admirer of Jack having worked with him – especially in a competition when you’re away for six weeks – you need someone like Jack to have him around the place.
“It’s not just his football ability but his personality, the way he is and the way he is around the group.
“He’s great fun and a really great lad and of course, the kid can play and offer something different which obviously others can’t, in my opinion.
“For me, he’s got to be on the plane.”

Asked the same question, Simon Jordan said: “I’m not a massive dyed-in-the-wool fan on Jack Grealish.
“I appreciate the fact that he’s a good player and I appreciate the fact that the price tag paid for him is not his fault and I appreciate that Pep Guardiola isn’t blind and doesn’t buy bad players.
Pep Guardiola gives sarcastic response to critics for Jack Grealish dressing down after Manchester City’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal
“But I don’t look at Grealish in the way that others do. He doesn’t let the ball go enough, he doesn’t do things that he should and could do and isn’t as effective as people think he is and this season he hasn’t done very much.
“If you’re bringing him in because of what you think he might do – I dunno, is that that credentials for selecting someone to play for England?
“I thought you got selected based upon what you do, not what you might do and on your recent form.
“I don’t think he’s a shoo-in to be on the plane this summer. I understand why Steve would and I don’t have a particular opinion on whether he does or he doesn’t.”
Arsenal rescued a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich as Leandro Trossard’s late leveller stopped Harry Kane making a triumphant return to north London in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.
Trossard came off the bench to equalise in the closing stages at the Emirates Stadium after former Tottenham striker Kane put Bayern 2-1 ahead with a first-half penalty.
Arsenal had taken an early lead through Bukayo Saka before former Gunners winger Serge Gnabry put Bayern back on level terms.
Kane scored a north London derby record 14 goals against Arsenal during his time with Tottenham, making him an inevitable target for taunts for Gunners fans.
When Kane bagged his sixth career goal at the Emirates — and his 39th in all competitions in his first season with Bayern — it seemed the England captain would have the last laugh.
But Trossard’s dramatic intervention leaves the tie delicately poised ahead of the second leg in Munich on April 17.
Befitting their poor form, Bayern made a nervous start and Alphonso Davies was quickly booked for a challenge on Saka that triggered a second-leg suspension for the Canadian defender.
Mikel Arteta’s men took the lead in the 12th minute, showing the intensity and poise that had led Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel to label them “the best team in the Premier League”.
Saka started Arsenal’s high press, winning the ball deep in Bayern’s half before Ben White’s return pass picked out the England winger in the area.
Saka’s strike was unerring, flashing low past Manuel Neuer into the far corner for his 18th goal in all competitions this term.
But Tuchel’s side exposed a rare moment of naivety from Arsenal to draw level six minutes later.

Arsenal’s Gabriel Magalhaes carelessly surrendered possession and Bayern pounced as perfectly weighted passes from Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka picked out Gnabry, who deftly guided his shot past David Raya from 12 yards.
It was the first time Arsenal had conceded at home in the Champions League this season, and Raya had to pick the ball out of his net again in the 32nd minute.
Leroy Sane’s dazzling burst through the heart of the flat-footed Arsenal defence was only halted when William Saliba’s crude challenge conceded a penalty.
With boos ringing around the Emirates, Kane kept his composure to send Raya the wrong way from the spot before aiming a broad grin at the Arsenal keeper on his way back to the centre-circle.
In an inspired tactical change, Arteta sent on Trossard and Gabriel Jesus in the second half, lifting Arsenal out of their lethargy in time to snatch a 76th-minute equaliser.
Jesus was the catalyst with a superb surge into the Bayern area that ended with a pin-point pass to Trossard, who gleefully slotted a fine finish past Neuer.
Arsenal were furious not to be given a penalty in the final seconds when Neuer caught Saka in a fitting denouement for a tie on a knife-edge.
The decision not to award Arsenal a late penalty left TNT Sports pundits Martin Keown and Rio Ferdinand in disbelief.
“Wow, look, from where we were, I thought all day long it’s a penalty,” Keown said.
“There is a suspicion that Saka puts his foot toward the ball. But the movements from the keeper, Neuer is going towards the ball. He comes out and makes the challenge. For me, that’s a penalty.”
Ferdinand added: “How has that not been given? I can’t believe it, with VAR and everything, I can’t believe that has not been given. That is a penalty.
“I’m walking around in disbelief with my hands on the top of my head.”

Real Madrid and Champions League holders Manchester City shared a pulsating 3-3 draw in a rollercoaster quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.
Bernardo Silva put City ahead with a low free-kick but Ruben Dias’ own goal and Rodrygo Goes helped Madrid dramatically and swiftly fight back.
Manchester City’s own quick-fire double in the second half through Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol stunned the record 14-time winners, but they snatched a draw through Fede Valverde’s scorching volley.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for defensive midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni at centre-back over Nacho Fernandez and an early rash challenge from the Frenchman paved the way for City’s opener.
Tchouameni clumsily hacked down Jack Grealish after 33 seconds and was booked, meaning he will miss the second leg.
From the free-kick Silva punished Madrid further, catching goalkeeper Andriy Lunin out at his near post with a low effort which skidded home.
Ancelotti, coaching a record 200th Champions League match, claimed his team lacked courage and personality when they were crushed by City in last seasons semis, but they showed mental strength to quickly turn the game on its head.
This kind of feat is Madrid’s wont in the Champions League, and they produced two goals in two minutes, reminiscent of their stunning 2022 semi-final comeback against City thanks to Rodrygo’s brace.

Dias deflected the first into his own net as he tried to block Camavinga’s long-range piledriver, and Rodrygo slipped home the second after Vinicius Junior played him in, aided by another deflection, off Manuel Akanji.
A breathless first 45 minutes was followed by more of the same, in a tie increasingly dubbed a Champions League “Clasico”.
Foden pulled his team level with a superb strike, arced into the top corner from the edge of the box.
With Antonio Rudiger shackling Erling Haaland, City got a goal from an unlikely source to lead five minutes later.
Defender Gvardiol’s ferocious bending effort from distance left Lunin no chance and silenced the Bernabeu — but not for long.
Valverde’s brilliant volley from Vinicius’ cross zipped past Ortega to level the score and leave the game deliciously poised for the second leg on April 17.
Manchester City forward Jack Grealish has admitted he still finds one question from his mother difficult to answer.
The 28-year-old might have won the treble last season, and be a key player for England, but that doesn’t appease everyone.
2
Grealish’s gets targeted by rival fans but is adored by Man City supportersCredit: Getty
Grealish became the most expensive British player in 2021 when he joining Man City from Aston Villa in a £100million deal, but this has since been surpassed by Declan Rice who cost Arsenal £105m.
His first two campaigns were a success at the Etihad but the Three Lions star has endured a tough season blighted by several injuries.
He made a return to action as his side drew 0-0 with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon – but received a dressing down from Pep Guardiola at full-time.
And despite being adored by Man City fans, it is the total opposite when playing away from home, and he can’t get his head around it – and neither can his mother.

“I always think about it. I always wonder, ‘why do they boo me?’ – and my mum always asks me about it as well,” he said.
“But I don’t actually know why it happens. At every single away ground I go to now, I get booed and I’m not entirely sure why it is – I just have to try and take it as a positive or a compliment.”
Grealish has already won six trophies with his current employers helping to silence his critics.

His side are remain in the hunt for three trophies this campaign, looking to get their hands on three trophies once against – the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.
Man City are currently third in the English top flight, on 63 points, behind both Arsenal and league leaders Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola gave Jack Grealish a public dressing down moments before keeping Erling Haaland and Gabriel apart.
Manchester City could not claim all three points in a bore 0-0 draw against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday and Guardiola had some choice words for his players on the pitch at full-time.
2
Guardiola was engaged in a lenghty chat with Grealish at full-timeCredit: sky sports
That included Grealish, who was brought on from the bench in the second half but made very little impact as Arsenal defended brilliantly.
And at full-time, Guardiola found the England international on the pitch and was engaged in a very animated conversation with the winger, who appeared to agree with his coach.
It is not the first time that the City boss has delivered such speeches to his players after a match and Jeremy Doku also had his ear bent moments before.
However, this animated chat stretched on for a few couple of minutes while Grealish looked locked in and listened.
But there was further drama as moments later, Guardiola had to keep the peace as Haaland and Gabriel looked set to clash with one another.
The two had been nibbling at each other all game and Guardiola kept the Brazilian at bay as they exchanged unpleasantries.
However, both Haaland and Gabriel made up in the end with a handshake and a hug with the two nullifying each other on the pitch.
Asked what he said to Grealish at full-time by talkSPORT, Guardiola was keen to play the incident down, simply replying that the £100m midfielder played really well.

Grealish similarly did not acknowledge the heated conversation when posting on social media afterwards. He wrote: “So good to be back and playing again in front of our fans. Now for a strong end to the season.”
With both sides looking to land a telling punch in the title race, neither side could truly break down the other.
In truth, neither goalkeeper was tested too much with both defences well on top – as Guardiola and Mikel Arteta named four central defenders each in their backlines.
The draw has kept Liverpool at the top of the table, who leapfrogged Arsenal earlier in the day after coming from behind to beat Brighton at Anfield.
Three points separate the top three – with City sitting third after failing to beat Arsenal at home.
Both sides have had to contend with key injuries, with Ederson and Kyle Walker missing for the hosts while Nathan Ake went off injured.
City play Real Madrid in two weeks in the Champions League while Arsenal lost Bukayo Saka late into the contest.
He may not be back in time to play in the huge clash which means Josko Gvardiol is likely to be called into the line-up.
Both Jack Grealish and Kevin De Bruyne were left out of their respective international squads this month due to groin problems.
But they have each taken part in training this week, with De Bruyne a shoo-in to play behind Erling Haaland.

England star Grealish is a bigger doubt having not started a game since late February, but Guardiola’s problems on the left may force his hand.
His replacement Jeremy Doku has struggled in 2024 to replicate his early-season promise having not registered a Premier League goal or assist since early November.
Julian Alvarez proved he was uncomfortable in an unorthodox wing role in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool earlier this month, and has the added headache of long-haul travel from America on Argentina duty.
On the opposite flank will be the in-form Phil Foden, with Bernardo Silva occupying the two No.8 roles alongside De Bruyne.

Guardiola might have to take some injury risks in such a crunch game
Martinelli’s Brazil teammate Gabriel Jesus hasn’t started a game since January 30, with the club looking to manage his workload.

Former Man City star Jesus has struggled with persistent knee injuries and has been forced to feature from the bench in Arsenal’s last three games before the break.
A return to his old stomping ground could finally see the 26-year-old feature from the start, having featured on the left at City.
Another former Sky Blue star in Oleksandr Zinchenko will likely be resigned to the bench due to Jakub Kiwior‘s impressive form.
Premier League clashes – or any sporting match for that matter – don’t get much bigger than this.
There are 11 rounds remaining in the league, but you get the feeling that this weekend’s match could prove crucial to deciding who lists the trophy. The fixture has certainly done so in the past.
As Manchester City star Phil Foden put it simply this week: “It’s massive … It’s games we want to play in, the biggest games and the biggest occasions, so hopefully, we will be ready for it.”
City defender Manuel Akanji said: “It definitely will be massive. The winner will go to the top of the league. I don’t want to talk about the title race but it would be a big win for us.”
City are the reigning Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup winners. This year, they’ve already won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup – meaning they hold five titles simultaneously.
It is hard to argue that there is a better team in world football.
Former 296-game Man City player Richard Dunne said after their 3-1 win over FC Copenhagen today booked their place in the Champions League quarterfinals: “Match them up against any team in Europe and I just think they’re better than them!”

Close behind them, though, are the Reds. Last season saw them slump to a fifth-place finish in the league, some 22 points behind City, meaning for the first time in six years they aren’t in the Champions League this campaign.
Yet Liverpool have already won the League Cup after beating Chelsea just a couple of weeks ago, and are alive in the Europa League, FA Cup, and of course the Premier League.
Both teams are not just chasing one trophy this season, but multiple. That has so often been the case for these two heavyweights in recent years.
But this meeting is special.
It is the last dance between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, two iconic managers who have arguably today’s greatest rivalry in football.
Sure, Guardiola’s protege Mikel Arteta and his Gunners are in the title race. They came close last year, and next week will face City in another huge ‘six pointer’ in the fight to be Premier League champions.
But the Gunners have not won the title since the Invincibles of 2003-04. They haven’t reached a Champions League semi-final since 2007-08. They remain a team on the rise rather than a consistent, dominant force – though a Premier League win would confirm their ascent into the elite.
Since Guardiola took over in 2016, City have won 14 trophies. Klopp took over the Anfield side a year earlier, and has won seven in that time. City have won five of the last six league titles – with Liverpool the only team to stop the juggernauts in that time.
It is the greatest rivalry of the modern English game.
As Liverpool great Jamie Carragher said in 2022, the feud is: “the best we’ve ever had in English football … We’ve never had the two best teams & managers in the world together fighting it out.”

Jurgen and Pep: two masters of attacking football in the modern game.
The pair have faced each other a whopping 29 times – for both men, it’s the most matches they’ve ever taken charge of against a specific manager.
The record is razor-thin: Klopp has won 12, Guardiola 11, with six draws.
No manager has more wins against Klopp than Guardiola – and the reverse is true.
Besides Klopp, Guardiola has won more matches than he’s lost against every other manager he’s faced more than three times, except Antonio Conte (at Chelsea and Spurs, Conte won four times and lost three against Pep’s City). Klopp, of course, has faced his rival in 22 more games than Conte did.
When it comes to trophies, Guardiola outmuscles his rival by some distance: 35 to 13.
Their rivalry began in Germany, where Klopp was in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Guardiola Bayern Munich. Klopp won the first meeting in the DFB Super Cup in 2013, 4-2. They would face off eight times in total across two years in Germany, with the pair having four wins apiece and Klopp winning two of the three meetings in cup finals.
In England, they have faced off 21 times. Klopp has won eight games, Guardiola seven, with six draws.
And while the rivalry has often been heated on the field – more on that below – off the field has been a different story.

Ahead of a meeting in April 2022, Klopp called Guardiola the “best coach in the world”.
Guardiola said in his own press conference ahead of that game: “Jurgen, as a manager, has been the biggest rival I’ve ever had in my career.”
He added: “I will remember my period here, when I’m retired watching and playing golf, I’ll remember my biggest rival was Liverpool, for sure.”
And when Klopp announced that this season would be his last at Liverpool, Guardiola paid a touching tribute.
“He’s an absolutely incredible manager and I know I don’t know him closely but he’s an incredible person. I had a feeling that at the end of the season when he is leaving, part of us, Man City, is leaving too. They have been our biggest rival, Liverpool in these years,” he said.
“Personally, in Dortmund and here, he’s been my biggest rival, so he will be missed. Personally, I will miss him,” before adding that he’ll “sleep better” the night before a Liverpool game with Klopp out of the picture.
Klopp said today: “I’m not sure how often in this club we have to say that ‘you know how much we respect the opponent’.
“Pep is the best manager in the world. I have a really good life being not even close to that – it’s absolutely fine.”
He added: “I see excellence when I face it. Pep is definitely that. In my lifetime, he’s the outstanding manager.”

THE MEETINGS
When City and Liverpool met earlier this season at the Etihad, they produced an instant classic – true to form for what has been a battle of iconic proportions for the last half-decade.
After Guardiola took over City in 2016 – the season after Klopp arrived at Anfield – the pair faced off in the Premier League for the first time in December. City dominated possession, but Liverpool won 1-0.
Not a single Liverpool player remains from their starting XI in that match – though Trent Alexander-Arnold was on the bench – while Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones have gone on to become crucial figures in City’s enduring success under Guardiola.
Since that first clash, the teams have delivered epic encounters time and again.
In 2017-18, they did battle for the only time in the Champions League, a two-leg clash in the quarterfinals.
Liverpool won the first leg 3-0 in one of Klopp’s most celebrated nights at Anfield. Mohamed Salah led the way – as he often does – with the Reds scoring three times in the first 31 minutes to blow City away. They also claimed victory in the second leg, dumping City out – and getting revenge for City’s bruising 5-0 win in the league that season.
City would hit 100 points in the Premier League to win by a massive 18-point margin. Liverpool, meanwhile, would finish as runners-up in the Champions League.

The next season delivered one of the greatest Premier League games of all time.
In January 2019, Liverpool travelled to City seven points clear in the title race.
Sadio Mane shot early in the game struck the post, before City defender John Stones’ clearance slammed into goalkeeper Ederson. As the ball bounced towards the goal, Stones – a former Everton player – raced back and pulled off the most miraculous of goal line clearances. Indeed,
Goal line technology showed that the ball was just 11 millimetres from fully crossing the line.
City went on to win the game 2-1 – and then went on to win the title by a lone point.
11 millimetres: On such slender margins are titles won and lost.
Liverpool finished with 97 points – the most ever from a second-placed team in the Premier League or any of Europe’s top leagues.
This time around, Liverpool enter the clash with a slender one-point advantage. A win would take them four clear, a potentially powerful moment in the title race. A City win would shuffle up the order at the top of the table – while a draw would open the door to third-place Arsenal. It’s all to play for.
THE ANFIELD CURSE
For all the incredible matches between the two, one statistic stands out: City have won just once at Liverpool’s fabled stadium since 2003. The sole victory was a 4-1 in February 2021, when Jack Grealish delivered arguably his finest performance in a City shirt after having been sick all day in the lead-up to the match.
That match was also a turning point in the title race. When Liverpool led 1-0 early through Salah, City’s title bid looked done and dusted with Arsenal well clear on points.
But Liverpool gloveman Alisson made two errors and City brilliantly bulldozed their way to victory over the out-of-form Reds. The win sent a statement of intent to the Gunners – and pretty quickly they stumbled, with a rampant City surging home to win another crown.
But that match does come with a caveat – it was played without fans in the stands.

With fans present, City have won just once at Anfield in the Premier League – indeed, that 2003 victory was their only win at Anfield since 1981.
“It’s a stadium we never seem to win a lot at, so it’s going to be a challenge,” Phil Foden said.
Klopp said today: “Anfield has, from time to time, a real impact on our game…
“The atmosphere our people can create… am I allowed to say it’s second to none or will anybody get offended by that?
“It’s really good and energising. These are the games you want to play and watch. Anfield is, for us, a massive factor.”
Ending the curse would be a huge psychological boost for City – and a major blow to Liverpool’s belief they can end City’s hunt for a fourth-straight crown.
Former City goalkeeper Shay Given told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Anfield will be bouncing on Sunday, it’s a really tough place to play.”
“I think if City go there and get three points, which they can do, then they will go on to become the first team to win four Premier Leagues on the bounce.”
THE ADDED SPICE
The rivalry hit new heights this week when Liverpool’s hometown star Trent Alexander-Arnold claimed his team’s trophies ‘mean more’ than City’s given their rival’s significantly stronger financial backing.
“It’s tough,” Alexander-Arnold told FourFourTwo magazine. “We’re up against a machine that’s built to win – that’s the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.
‘Looking back on this era, although they’ve won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially.
“How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we’ve done it, probably means more to our fans.”
It’s long been a criticism of Manchester City.
“I’m a good manager but I don’t win titles if I don’t have good players and good players are expensive. All the clubs spend a lot of money: Barcelona spend a lot of money, Madrid spend a lot of money, English teams spend a lot of money,” Guardiola said in 2020.
But there’s no doubt there’s a clear difference in the expenditure of the two teams.
As of last season, FIFA reports that Manchester City’s squad cost £1.1bn in combined transfer fees, while Liverpool’s cost £774.1m.
Since Jurgen Klopp arrived on Merseyside in 2015, he has spent just over 800 million pounds on players at Liverpool, but has an overall net spend of £254 million.
In that same time frame – which includes the year before Guardiola arrived at City – the Cityzens have spent £1.28bn with a net spend of £692.3m.

The Abu Dhabi-owned club has also been charged with 115 breaches of Premier League financial rules dating from 2009 to 2018, with the Premier League revealing announcing it has set a date for a private hearing – without revealing when that is.
City understandably rankled at Alexander-Arnold’s claims.
Erling Haaland told Sky Sports: “If he wants to say that, OK. I’ve been here one year and I won the treble and it was quite a nice feeling, I don’t think he knows exactly this feeling.
“So yeah, that is what I felt last season and it was quite nice.
“They can talk as much as they want, or he can talk as much as he wants. I don’t know why he does that, but I do not mind.”
It is just the latest twist in an increasingly heated rivalry.
Ahead of the April 2018 Champions League clash between the teams, Liverpool supporters hit City’s team bus with flares and bottles. So badly damaged was the bus that a replacement was required to ferry City back to Manchester.
The same occurred in late 2022, a match in which Liverpool fans were also accused of throwing coins at Guardiola.
In April 2023, City fans similarly targeted Liverpool’s bus after their resounding 4-1 league win.
That match – and the one in October 2022 – were also marred by shocking chants from some City fans referencing the Hillsborough disaster which cost the lives of 97 Liverpool fans.
While the rivalry does not have the same history as Liverpool’s bitter hatred of Manchester United, there has been increasing tension between the two camps despite the immense respect each manager shows for their opposite.
Police are on red alert over more potential clashes, formally requesting the Premier League play the match at the unusual start time of 3.45pm (local) in order to aid crowd control.

THE BIG CONCERN FOR REDS
City enter the match on a 20-game unbeaten streak and are near full strength, with winger Jack Grealish and potentially £55m winger Jeremy Doku the only two stars who could be absent. Matheus Nunes is expected to play despite suffering a horribly gruesome broken finger in midweek Champions League action.
But Liverpool have been battling a major injury crisis in recent weeks – and it only got worse on Friday when Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez both were substituted with injuries against Sparta Praha in the Europa League.
Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones are all ruled out. Ryan Gravenberch, Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak will also miss the game.
But there’s a crucial boost for the Reds, with Mohamed Salah coming off the bench in the Europa League after overcoming an injury.
All told, it is perfectly poised to be a pivotal moment in this title race. The last meeting of two legendary managers with a league battle at a crucial juncture, and with the added weight of the Anfield curse – and fresh fuel added to the fire of the rivalry by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
After serving up classic matches year after year, all indications point to another famous battle between the two juggernauts of the last five years.
