City star blasts ‘unacceptable’ result as late Arsenal drama provides major title twist: PL Wrap

Arsenal regained pole position in the Premier League title race on Saturday as the Gunners fought back for a thrilling 4-2 victory at Aston Villa, while Manchester City were held to a damaging 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Just three days after surrendering first place with a 3-1 defeat against City, Arsenal bounced back in impressive style to move two points clear of the champions.

With just minutes left at Villa Park, Mikel Arteta’s side were in danger of slipping up again in their bid to win the title for the first time since 2004.

Arsenal twice trailed to goals from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho, only for Bukayo Saka and then Oleksandr Zinchenko to haul them level.

Deep into second half stoppage-time, Arsenal received a helping hand from their former keeper as Emiliano Martinez inadvertently deflected Jorginho’s shot into his own net after it hit the bar.

Gabriel Martinelli capped Arsenal’s remarkable escape when he tapped into the empty net in the final seconds after Martinez was caught upfield at a Villa corner.

“We are back with more belief than before because you have to turn performances into results,” Arteta said.

“Win in any context. We’ve always talked about that. Today we had a really difficult context, especially with what happened after five minutes.

“The team showed a lot of emotional qualities that are needed. I’m really happy.”

Arsenal’s first victory in five games in all competitions will give them renewed belief they can pip City to the title.

The Gunners, who have a game in hand on the champions, were given a massive boost by their title rivals’ stumble just hours later.

CITY LEFT TO RUE MISSED CHANCES AS PLUCKY FOREST FRUSTRATE

Bernardo Silva put Pep Guardiola’s men ahead four minutes before half-time, taking Jack Grealish’s pass in his stride and drilling a clinical finish past Keylor Navas from 20 yards.

But the tension mounted as City searched for a second goal and Guardiola was booked for manhandling the fourth official after Erling Haaland’s penalty appeal was rejected following Joe Worrall’s challenge.

City were undone by their profligacy as Haaland’s drive hit the bar before the Norway star blazed the rebound over.

Haaland missed another chance moments later and Forest made the champions pay with their first shot on target in the 84th minute.

Morgan Gibbs-White fired a low ball across the area and New Zealand striker Chris Wood tapped into an empty net to leave Guardiola stunned.

Guardiola conceded City were the victims of their own downfall after such sloppy finishing.

“It was a brilliant performance, we played really good but we didn’t score. At this level you have to score and that is why we dropped points,” he said.

“The first half should already be 2-0 or 3-0, we conceded one shot on target and we dropped points. We are sad and disappointed but the way we played was really good.

“We missed goals that were one metre to the goalkeeper, not just one, a few. That is why we didn’t win. What can I say?”

City defender Kyle Walker was equally frustrated at the result.

“I’m not blaming anyone,” Walker told Match of the Day.

“If the strikers aren’t getting the luck or hitting the target, us as a defensive unit need to hang onto the 1-0 victory and secure the three points.

“We know that’s not acceptable. That’s not me being downbeat but we’ve set such high standards over the last few years that it should be four or five nil, game done and we move onto the next game.”

CHELSEA STUNNED BY LAST-PLACED SAINTS IN MAJOR UPSET

Under-fire Chelsea boss Graham Potter suffered another blow as bottom of the table Southampton won 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

James Ward-Prowse scored his 17th Premier League free-kick — one behind David Beckham’s record in the competition — to give Southampton the lead in first half stoppage-time.

Stuart Armstrong was fouled on the edge of the area and with Saints fans chanting Ward-Prowse’s name, the midfielder curled a superb set-piece past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea were booed off at full-time after a result that left them languishing in 10th place, with just two wins in their last 14 games in all competitions and none in their last five.

Everton moved out of the relegation zone with a valuable 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Leeds at Goodison Park.

Seamus Coleman netted in the 64th minute when Everton’s veteran defender hooked over a cross that caught out Leeds keeper Illan Meslier, who left a gap at his near post for the ball to squeeze into the net.

Sean Dyche’s side have won two of their three matches since he replaced the sacked Frank Lampard and now sit one point above the bottom three, while managerless Leeds are in 19th place.

‘Men against boys’: City’s ‘ominous’ return to PL summit amid stark Gunners truth — UK View

No matter how big the point buffer had become between Arsenal and Manchester City, there was an eerie feeling Pep Guardiola’s side were never out of the title race.

Those feelings became all too frighteningly real for Gunners fans as Arsenal slipped to a 3-1 defeat to City at the Emirates in a thrilling clash, giftwrapping top spot to the defending champions.

Although City’s $AUD174m man Jack Grealish conceded Arsenal “were the better team” and played “a lot better than us”, three clinical moments for Guardiola’s side highlighted the chasm between the title-chasing pair.

First it was Takehiro Tomiyasu’s undercooked backpass that allowed Kevin de Bruyne to swoop in and lob Aaron Ramsdale from outside of the box.

Gabriel then needlessly dragged down Erling Haaland in the box to give away a penalty, although the Brazilian was bailed out by VAR as the Norwegian was inches offside.

But there was no technology to bail out Gabriel when he carelessly gave the ball away to Bernardo Silva which eventuated in Jack Grealish scoring the go-ahead goal with Haaland adding the killer blow just 10 minutes later.

With the evident difference in overall class and quality, The Telegraph’s Jason Burt believed the contest “felt like men against boys”, with the result perhaps proving to be “ominous” in the ensuing title race.

Although Arsenal have a chance to claw back top spot thanks to a game in hand, the momentum isn’t quite there.

Mikel Arteta’s troops have now dropped eight points from three games, a figure larger than the number of points dropped from the preceding 19 fixtures.

Had they beaten relegation-threatened Everton, they also could have extended their lead at the top to 11 points at one stage after City’s loss to Spurs just two games ago.

Instead, a loss to the Toffees followed by a draw against Brentford left the door ajar for City to creep back in, and creep back in they have.

“That’s why they’re champions,”The Times’ Henry Winter wrote.

“That’s why Manchester City’s thoroughbreds were always going to hunt down Arsenal’s hopefuls.”

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare likened City’s inevitable dominance to that of a certain Serbian tennis player who may initially appear shook, but roars back to life.

De Bruyne makes Arsenal pay for blunder | 00:54

“Trying to compete for a title with this City team feels a lot like trying to beat Novak Djokovic over five sets,” Eccleshare said.

“The way it changes so quickly and suddenly the challenger is gasping for air and thinking hold on I had a decent lead not long ago, what the hell just happened?”

With Arsenal’s lead at the top now momentarily gone, The Independent’s Miguel Delaney predicted “this might now be the beginning of the run everyone has been waiting for” from City.

“That is no real shame for Arsenal given how they have overperformed already this season but this match had the feeling of where they went to the limits against City and just didn’t have enough,” Delaney wrote.

Title implications aside, City’s victory was their 11th-straight Premier League win over the Gunners, with Arteta presiding for six of those defeats since taking charge in December 2019.

Of course, they have all come against Arteta’s managerial master, Guardiola.

Earlier contests between the two English titans with Arteta and Guardiola in opposing dugouts have all ended with City having their hand raised, but there was something slightly different about this one that hints the tide is slowly turning.

For starters, City had their lowest share of the possession count (36 per cent, to be exact) in a Premier League match since Guardiola took over.

The Daily Mail’s Ian Ladyman even described it as “a new and modern Premier League rivalry.”

“But this, despite the final score line, was a contest not to settle an argument or even a title race,” Ladyman wrote.

“Instead it merely hinted at more to come from these two further down the tracks.”

City now has 15 games between now and the end of the season, with a match against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on April 26.

Ladyman notes Guardiola’s side are now in pole position, “and if they don’t stay there it will be a surprise.”

But a first Premier League title in 19 years is still in Arsenal’s hands as they can return to the summit should they win their game in hand.

Whether they can stave off City remains to be seen, but this surely won’t be the last season we see these two Premier League juggernauts trade blows.

Jack Grealish couldn’t believe it when told about Man City stats and admits Arsenal were better

Manchester City haven’t been themselves this season, but for once, that turned out to be a good thing.

A 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates has Pep Guardila’s side back at the top of the Premier League, albeit with a game extra played.

    AFP

    City took the three points

And now they’re back on top

And now they’re back on top

A masterclass from Kevin De Bruyne saw the Belgian score the opener and assist Erling Haaland, while Jack Grealish bagged the other goal in a long-overdue title showdown.

The result marked a potentially defining point in the race for the title, in a season where City have struggled.

Guardiola’s men have been below their best, while questions have been asked about Haaland fitting into their team, despite his extraordinary goalscoring record.

But against Arsenal, it was substance over style, and Guardiola might have stumbled across something.

In what appeared to be a bizarre 3-2-4-1 formation pre-match, his side struggled, and Guardiola was honest when asked what the problem was.

“My tactics!” he said. “I tried something new and it was horrible.

“We are built as a team, as a crazy team. In the second half we were more aggressive, winning duels and when that happens we are a better team.

“What’s important is winning the game in this stadium. It was good but there are many, many games to play for everyone.

“Now we are top of the league but they have one game in hand.”

Despite his switch-up, there was still plenty new for City, as the stats showed.

The Sky Blues had just 36 per cent possession in the game, the lowest total for a league match in Guardiola’s entire managerial career.

City also recorded their lowest passing accuracy under Guardiola [72.76%] and fewest successful passes [219], but still came out on top.

Guardiola thinks City showed their best in the second 45, but his record signing disagreed.

“If I’m being honest I don’t think we played that well,” Grealish said post-match.

“I think Arsenal played a lot better than us, I think they were the better team.”

When told about Guardiola’s new possession low, the winger was in shock.

“Thirty six?” he asked in disbelief. “I don’t really want to say much about that.

“That’s what I mean, though, I thought they were the better team. I thought they had a few chances.

“I think if you win titles you’ve got to come to grounds like this and win games even when you’re not at your best.”

There was a clear disconnect between the manager and his star player, and debate will certainly continue over who is right, and therefore whether City are the real deal or not this season.

All Arteta can do is hope Grealish ends up being proved correct, and not only be the better team for their final showdown in April but for the 16 games left to conquer.

City’s $90m headache despite crucial win; United silence bitter rivals in heated clash: PL Wrap

Manchester City shrugged off the uncertainty caused by a series of Premier League charges to close to within three points of Arsenal at the top of the table with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Monday (AEDT).

A cloud is hanging over the English champions after the Premier League hit the club with more than 100 charges alleging breaches of financial rules dating as far back as 2009.

If found guilty, City could face a severe points deduction or even relegation from the top flight.

But City boss Pep Guardiola came out swinging in defence of the club’s hierarchy as he pointed the finger at jealous Premier League rivals for the accusations and his players followed him with a show of defiance on the field.

Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez all struck before half-time at the Etihad to edge ominously into Arsenal’s rear-view mirror ahead of a clash between the two on Wednesday.

Arsenal still have a game in hand, but City will now move to the top of the table should they win at the Emirates in midweek.

The Gunners’ 1-1 draw at home to Brentford on Saturday opened the door for City and unlike last weekend, when the defending champions missed the chance to pounce with defeat away to Tottenham, this time they made no mistake.

Guardiola also learned his lesson from an experimental line-up at Spurs. Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin De Bruyne and Gundogan were restored to the starting line-up and City looked much more like their old selves.

The City support made their feelings known before kick-off as the Premier League anthem was booed and a banner raised saluting the lawyer the club have hired to defend the charges.

Just four minutes in they had something to cheer as Rodri rose highest to power home a header from Mahrez’s corner.

Jack Grealish was in the mood to do some damage against his former club and only a brilliant finger-tip save from Emiliano Martinez denied the England international from finding the top corner.

Much was made of City’s reluctance to hit Erling Haaland early in a feeble surrender to Spurs last weekend and the Norwegian was a far more persistent threat in behind the Villa defence.

Haaland, who joined City for $90m (AUD) in the off-season, created the second as his pace beat Martinez to De Bruyne’s ball over the top and he picked out Gundogan at the far post for a simple finish.

Grealish then lured Jacob Ramsey into a clumsy challenge to win a penalty, which Mahrez slotted home as Haaland surprisingly stepped aside.

That decision was perhaps explained by Haaland’s withdrawal at half-time as he appeared to be nursing a thigh issue, which will be a concern for Guardiola.

So too will be his side’s defensive record as another clean sheet was spoiled when Douglas Luiz robbed Bernardo Silva and freed Ollie Watkins to fire into the far corner on the hour mark.

Villa substitute Jhon Duran then smashed against the bar in stoppage time, but a second-half rally was too little, too late for Unai Emery’s men.

RASHFORD’S HOT STREAK CONTINUES AS RED DEVILS BRUSH ASIDE RIVALS

Marcus Rashford extended his hot streak with the late goal that inspired Manchester United’s 2-0 win against old rivals Leeds on Monday.

After Rashford scored to spark United’s comeback from two goals down in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Leeds, Rashford tormented the Yorkshire club once again.

Rashford netted with 10 minutes left at Elland Road to make it four successive Premier League games with a goal for the England forward, who has scored in eight of his last nine appearances in the competition.

Following Alejandro Garnacho’s frustrated reaction to being substituted on Wednesday, the Argentine teenager made amends as he came off the bench to seal United’s hard-fought victory five minutes after Rashford’s goal.

United’s win was just their second in their last five league games, although they have now lost just once in their last 17 matches in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag’s side moved up to second place, although Manchester City would go back above them if they beat Aston Villa later on Sunday.

More importantly, United are seven points clear of fifth placed Tottenham in the race to qualify for the Champions League via a top four finish.

The clash was marred by offensive taunts from the stands, with Leeds fans singing about the 1958 Munich air crash that killed several United players and their rivals in the away end responding by chanting about the deaths of two Leeds fans in Istanbul in 2000.

Fourth bottom Leeds are without a win in their last nine league games and would drop into the relegation zone if Everton beat Liverpool on Monday.

Since sacking Jesse Marsch on Monday, Leeds have seen their move for Rayo Vallecano boss Andoni Iraola blocked by his club, while Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and West Brom’s Carlos Corberan ruled themselves out of contention.

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear insists the search is “well advanced”, but Michael Skubala was in charge for a second game on a caretaker basis.

Amid a cacophonous noise at Elland Road, Leeds made a frenzied start, with Crysencio Summerville firing over after a mistake from United left-back Tyrell Malacia.

In keeping with the aggressive tone of one of English football’s bitterest rivalries, there were early bookings for Summerville and Leeds team-mate Junior Firpo for a pair of crude fouls.

In the midst of a frenetic clash littered with fouls, Bruno Fernandes’s attempt to chip Illan Meslier was halted by a block from Robin Koch, with the United midfielder’s appeal for handball waved away.

Summerville was denied by David De Gea when he tried to poke home at the near post.

Fernandes wasted a golden opportunity when he ran clean through on goal after Max Wober’s mistake, only to shoot straight at Meslier.

Summerville carried the main threat for Leeds and he forced a good save from De Gea soon after the interval.

United were on the back foot and Luke Ayling went close with a shot that deflected narrowly wide off Luke Shaw.

After scoring United’s equaliser against Leeds in midweek, Jadon Sancho had been rewarded with his first league start since October, but the England forward was largely anonymous and came off after an hour.

United defender Diogo Dalot almost ended the stalemate with a fierce strike against the bar from the edge of the area.

De Gea had to make a smart save with his foot to deny Summerville’s drive from a tight angle before United finally made the breakthrough in the 80th minute.

Shaw whipped over a teasing cross and Rashford found space to thump in a powerful header from 10 yards, with the forward’s 21st goal this season surviving a VAR check for offside.

Garnacho put the result beyond doubt five minutes later when he surged into the area and shot past Meslier via the near post.

  • Grealish hails two ‘unbelievable’ World Cup stars but neither play for ‘biggest threat’ to England

Grealish hails two ‘unbelievable’ World Cup stars but neither play for ‘biggest threat’ to England

England playmaker Jack Grealish has hailed Lionel Messi among two “unbelievable” players to have starred at the World Cup and named the “biggest threat” to the Three Lions going all the way in Qatar.

Grealish has come off the bench in both of England’s group matches so far and scored in the 6-2 win over Iran.

And the Manchester City forward was asked for his take on the best players at the tournament and which team he believes are England’s biggest challengers for the trophy.

He told talkSPORT: “I watch all the games to be honest. We have screens all over the place at the hotel and it’s just nice to have games on all day.

“I was watching Messi [against Mexico], unbelievable. He just showed what he’s about in that second half but then again so did Mbappe.

“I think there are lots of brilliant teams, some teams have that one player who’s just unstoppable but I think Brazil are one of the most impressive I’ve seen so far. They have so much talent, especially in those attacking areas. If you’re asking me who the biggest threat is, I’d probably say Brazil.”

Grealish also reckons the negative response to England’s 0-0 draw with the USA was a “big overreaction”.

“I think there was a big overreaction,” he added.

“Apart from Spain, are we the top scorers in the tournament? I can’t think off the top of my head if there’s anyone that’s scored more than six.

“The other day against Iran we were the best thing since sliced bread, scoring six goals, and then we go a game without scoring and there’s a bit of an overreaction. I think that’s what you get sometimes playing for England.”

Grealish will be hoping for a start in England’s final group game against Wales on Tuesday, in which the Three Lions just need to avoid a defeat by four goals or more to qualify for the last 16.

But it’s Phil Foden who the England fans are gunning for to be selected in Gareth Southgate’s XI.

In response to the clamour for Foden to start, Southgate said: “We are intending to be here as long as we can and he is a super player. We think the world of him and he is going to play a big part.

“We love Phil. He’s a super player. He’s obviously been into the first game (v Iran). We decided not to put him into the second but he is going to play an important part in this tournament for us. There is no question about that.”

Speaking on Sunday, City and England team-mate Kalvin Phillips backed Foden to “shine” when given his chance and Southgate admits he could fulfil a number of roles.

“We haven’t got any issue with Phil,” he added.

“In September he started both games for us. We put him into the game against Iran. We decided to stick with that team (for USA) and we felt the changes required something a little bit different for the game with the United States.

“He can play on the wing. He can play as a false nine and he can play behind the striker – he doesn’t do that as often for his club.

“He is very flexible. He works hard for the team and of course he has got fabulous technical ability.”

Pundit pleads with Grealish to ‘produce magic’, admitting forward ‘needs a big’ World Cup

Micah Richards wants Jack Grealish to “produce the magic” in the World Cup, as he feels the forward “needs a big tournament” to remind people of his quality.

A £100million transfer is enough to prompt some questions about the quality of any player. The best thing that can be done to quiet that noise is to perform to a high standard.

While Grealish has been solid at Manchester City, he has not lived up to the heights he was at during his time at Aston Villa. Richards feels he still has that in him, and a good World Cup campaign can show that to the world.

“He [Grealish] needs a big tournament and he needs to remind people of who he is. I watched some old clips of him at Aston Villa recently to remind myself what a special talent he is,” he told the Daily Mail.

Indeed, the winger was one of the Premier League’s very best while at Villa Park. In 62 Premier League games upon his return to the top flight for his boyhood club, the Englishman scored 14 goals and provided 20 assists.

That does not tell the full story of how he carried the side on his back for the majority of those two seasons. The fact that he was the most-fouled player in the league in consecutive seasons highlighted how dangerous he can be.

City clearly saw something big in him, leading them to drop the massive £100million sum.

Since being at the Etihad, Grealish has put in some good performances. He has scored seven goals and provided four assists in his time at the club so far.

However, he has not been the destructive, dangerous, attacking force that he was at Villa. His first World Cup could give him the opportunity to show that he can get back to that level.

“He needs to remember what he can do when he wants to destroy a defender and not think he’s just another player. Come on, Jack: produce the magic,” Richards added.

Not only would that benefit Grealish, but it would be a big bonus for England too. Having a player with a big point to prove doing his all to put in big performances is sure to lift the rest of the side and could help them go further in the tournament.
