Awkward – Arsenal fans notice Timber’s reaction as Areteta welcomes Calafiori

Arsenal fans couldn’t help but notice how Jurrien Timber and Jakub Kiwior reacted to Riccardo Calafiori’s arrival at the club.

Arsenal signed Calafiori from Bologna this week in a deal worth an initial £38million following a spectacular season where he helped lead the Serie A outfit to fifth in the league.

The Italy international can play left-back, centre-back and defensive midfield – much like two other players manager Mikel Arteta already has in the squad.

Timber and Kiwior both play left-back and centre-back but had difficult campaigns last season.

Timber spent most of the year injured after suffering an torn ACL on his debut while Kiwior struggled for game-time ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Arteta introduced Calafiori, who has been likened to Sergio Ramos, in a heart-warming video that was released on Arsenal’s YouTube channel where the defender stands up and is applauded by his new teammates.

But Arsenal fans noticed his rivals for game time, particularly Dutchman Timber who warmly clapped his hands before darting a glance at the new recruit.

Kiwior, meanwhile, beamed a smile as he entered the room and high-fived a coach as one fan wrote: “Does he know?”

Speaking on Timber, one fan wrote: “Look at Timber.”

Another replied: “Thought I was the only one who saw it, he knows, competition just gets stiffer.”

Arsenal now have several options in defence, which was the best in the Premier League last season and conceded just 29 times.

Arteta largely stuck with the same back four when available with David Raya taking Aaron Ramsdale’s position in goal but Calafiori could become the new first-choice left-back ahead of Zinchenko.

It means that every player has a back-up with Takehiro Tomiyasu behind Ben White at right-back, Timber behind William Saliba and Kiwior behind Gabriel Magalhaes.

And as the Gunners plot a way to overthrow Manchester City at the top of the table, Arteta will need all the help he can get.

Calafiori could be the answer after Zinchenko came under fire at times throughout the season while the 22-year-old made a short speech during his first meeting with the squad.

He said: “Of course, I am really happy to be here. I waited a lot. I hope we are going to do something great this year. Just this, thank you.”

After the meeting had concluded, Arteta gave Calafiori a big hug as the full-back said: “Is this real?”

Arteta replied: “It is real, it is real.”

Arsenal’s move for Calafiori was held up by Bologna after a dispute with his former club Basel over the sell-on fee and Arteta admitted he was left frustrated.

He said: “I’m very happy. It took a while – it was a player that we have monitored for a year.

“We were really short in the backline last year in terms of numbers and we demanded so much from them. William Saliba, for example, played in every minute of the Premier League and we believe we had to be more protected.

“We identified him as a talent that can give us skill and qualities that are going to make us better. We are signing a player with a huge capacity to develop.”

Arsenal are next in action on Wednesday night against Liverpool in a pre-season friendly at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Whether Calafiori will take part remains to be seen but Arteta might give fans a little look at their latest signing.

    Mikel Arteta on Riccardo Calafiori

Arteta: “I am very happy that we’ve got Riccardo done. As I said, it was very important to have that protection in the backline because of the issues that we had, especially last year when Jurrien was injured.

“It increases the quality and the competition and it’s very good for the team.

“It was the numbers. We only had six defenders in the backline and at this level you have to be really lucky to sustain the season like this.

“We were, because William for example and Gabriel nearly played every minute, we played more than 50 per cent more minutes than the previous season and if we are able to do that consistently over the next three or four years that’s a big question mark.

“Obviously you cannot just bet on that, that’s a big bet and we don’t want to take that bet.

“[He can play] both [left-back and centre-back], especially the way we want to play and the way we want to evolve in our game models.

“He is a player who is going to fit into what we want.

“I spoke to him one or two times and I knew the other things [teams being interested].

“I wasn’t really sure if we could do it or not, but he was adamant: ‘let me know when you’re ready, my bags are ready and I just want to come to Arsenal’.

“Those were his words and when you have that feeling, someone with that willingness to join us and make us better and that determination, it’s something really powerful and as a club, we should be really proud of that.”

Arsenal strengthened their Premier League title challenge and made history in doing so in their resounding 4-1 win over Newcastle.

Mikel Arteta‘s side have reduced Liverpool’s lead at the top to two points as they ran riot yet again to bring up 25 goals in their last six top-flight matches.

The Gunners bounced back emphatically after being beaten 1-0 by Porto in the Champions League last-16 first leg.

They put in a faultless performance in north London on Saturday night with Newcastle reduced to scraps.

A Sven Botman own-goal kicked off the proceedings for Arsenal and Kai Havertz doubled their lead before the half-hour mark.

Newcastle did little in terms of finding a response and were made to pay in the 65th minute as Bukayo Saka scored an excellent third.

He demonstrated his fine dribbling skills before scoring his 16th goal of the season in all competitions – his best tally for a single season.

Saka is also the first English player to have scored in five consecutive games for Arsenal in the Premier League since Ian Wright in 1994.

Jakub Kiwior scored the Gunners’ fourth of the game as Newcastle began to run out of steam, with his header from a Declan Rice corner creating Premier League history.

Arsenal have become the first Premier League side to ever score at least two goals across seven consecutive halves.

Joe Willock netted a consolation goal against his former club in the final ten minutes as Newcastle fell to their 11th league defeat.

Incredibly, it was the Toon outfit’s first goal away at Arsenal since Ayoze Perez’s header in 2014.

Arsenal on the other hand remain third and have now closed the gap on Liverpool, who face Chelsea in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

Reigning champions City still sit a point ahead of them following their 1-0 win at Bournemouth earlier in the day.

However, the Gunners’ latest victory proves they are well and truly in contention for a first league title in 20 years.

  • Arsenal seal second January signing as £21m defender with ‘huge potential’ joins the league leaders

Arsenal seal second January signing as £21m defender with ‘huge potential’ joins the league leaders

Arsenal have announced that they have signed Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior, with the fee for the Poland international believed to be around £21m.

The 22-year-old played for Poland at the World Cup and he was watching on from the stands as Arsenal beat Man Ud 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Kiwior had a spell at Anderlecht earlier in his career and he has played 43 times for Spezia since 2021.

Arsenal said Kiwior, a left-sided central defender, had signed a long-term contract, with the fee reported to be in the region of £21million.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta told the club’s website: “It’s great that Jakub is joining us. He’s a young versatile defender who has shown huge potential and qualities with Spezia in Serie A and also at international level with Poland.

“Jakub is a player who will give us strength and quality to our defensive unit. We welcome Jakub and his family to Arsenal and look forward to working with him.”

Arsenal sporting director Edu added: “We’re delighted to have completed the signing of Jakub Kiwior. He’s a young talent who we’ve been monitoring for a while now.”

Speaking on his move to Arsenal, Kiwior said: “When I saw my name on an Arsenal shirt for the first time, I just laughed! I was so happy to see my name on the shirt of such a huge club. For me, it’s an incredibly happy moment and the pinnacle to play for such a big club.

“I’ve always dreamt of playing in the Premier League. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, and if I got the chance, then I knew I’d have to make the most of it because it was one of my biggest dreams. For me, it’s the best league. I’m thrilled to be here.

“It’s huge for me that Arsenal were interested and that I’m able to be here. I’m aware that Arsenal are a massive club in a top league, so I didn’t really have to think about much else. I was just ecstatic and really wanted to come.

“I love passing the ball. I like teams that move the ball and try to create chances that way. So, I’m happy that I’ve come to a team like that.”

Kiwior is Arsenal’s second January signing. They have already spent around £21m to sign Leandro Trossard from Brighton. The fee for him could rise to £27m with add-ons.

The Belgium international impressed off the bench against Man Utd over the weekend. Club legend Cesc Fabregas was full of praise for Trossard following his debut.

“Trossard is a really good player. Better at the moment than what people think he is,” the Spaniard said.

“He showed that at Brighton, he showed it today for a couple of minutes. He is different to what they have got, he plays between the lines, he can score goals, play in different positions up-front.”
