‘This place is toxic’ – Troy Deeney launches into brutal Southampton take down

Troy Deeney eviscerated Southampton defender Jan Bednarek and declared the place ‘toxic’ as the club continues sleepwalking towards relegation.

The Saints slumped to their 20th defeat of the season as they lost 3-1 to Bournemouth at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Dango Outtara and Ryan Christie scored twice in as many minutes early in the first half to suck the life out of the home support.

However, Kamaldeen Sulemana sparked hopes of a surprise comeback when he scored in the 72nd minute to halve the deficit.

But Bournemouth awoke from their brief slumber as Marcus Tavernier wrapped up the three points with his 83rd-minute strike.

Deeney, who was at St Mary’s on commentary duty alongside Adrian Durham for talkSPORT, did not hold back when asked to sum up the Saints’ meek performance.

“They’re really bad, Adrian,” Deeney said.

“They are really, really bad. I’m sat here. I’ve got my wife and my son who came today, as we spent Valentine’s day down here yesterday.
And I just said to my five-year-old son, was that any good? And he said, ‘Southampton are trash, Dad’. That’s what he said to me.

“So, when you think about it, a five-year-old who’s not very up-to-date on football, he can’t see anything that they’re doing.

“And I’m sitting here as an adult who’s been around and understands the game. I can’t see where they win. I think they will win a game, but I can’t tell you how they’re going to win that game or where the goals are going to come from.”

Deeney conceded the Saints did have two bright spots in the form of Sulemana as well as teenage star Tyler Dibling, who has attracted plenty of interest from Premier League rivals.

The Watford legend also praised Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for keeping the scoreline as low as he could.

However, he was at a loss to explain why Ramsdale wanted to leave Arsenal to join the mess at St Mary’s and felt it could have major ramifications should he seek a move in the summer.

“Yes, he wanted to play,” Deeney said.

“Yes, he’s going to have a lot of shots.

“But do you think someone’s going to take him on next year, if they go down? I don’t think so.

“I think he’s made a real big gamble. Yes, he looks half good, but he doesn’t fill you with confidence that he can go on and kick and be in this England team, which is what he ultimately wanted to do.”

Although Deeney had kind words for Dibling and Sulemana, he reserved his strongest criticism for Bednarek.

The Pole started in the heart of Southampton’s defence but had an afternoon to forget.

So poor was Bednarek, Deeney felt he could still run rings around him despite having hung up the boots.

“And finally, the big centre-half, Bednarek,” Deeney said.

“I was running around him three years ago, and I haven’t run in a year. I’d put money on it, mate, that I could run past him now.”

Durham was stunned by the last comment, replying: “Wow. No disrespect to you, but that’s some indictment of the ambit.

But Deeney doubled down: “No, but I’ll be deadly serious. That’s not to give myself a big head. I haven’t ran in a year. I can run past him.”

Shane Long Claims Sadio Mané Was Horrendous When He First Came To Southampton

With the loss against Bournemouth, Southampton remain dead last in the league on nine points, ten behind 17th-placed Wolves.

Barring a spectacular run of form, the Saints appear destined for an instant return to the Championship.

However, Deeney believes the club have much bigger problems on their hands than just relegation.

    “It’s remarkable,” Deeney said.

“Again, when I come back to games, I remember playing here. It was like this. This place is toxic at the moment because there’s a massive disconnect between the board, the ownership, the players and the fans.

“What are you here to watch? I came here to do the research. I was thinking, are we going to see a solid defensive unit? Probably not.

The table paints an incredibly bleak picture for Southampton

The table paints an incredibly bleak picture for Southampton

“Are they going to be good attacking? Probably not.

“And they kind of do a little bit of nothing all the way through the game. We had a ten-minute spell where they scored. When you watch the goal, it’s more because Bournemouth completely took the foot off the gas, thinking this was job done.

“And then as soon as they scored, Bournemouth went, okay, let’s score another one and get this over and done with.

“I feel really bad for Southampton fans. I sat around a lot of them today, having a lot of talk, but I just don’t see where they’re going to get anything from.

“There’s nothing here now to build. And again, I’m not calling for the manager to be sacked because that’s not right, but I’ll put a hundred quid on it that he’s not a manager by the end of the season.”

Southampton will hope they can muster a result when they welcome Brighton to St Mary’s on February 22.

‘Worst team in history of Man Utd’: Amorim’s slams Red Devils; City hit battlers for six: PL Wrap

Manchester United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton as Old Trafford remembered the legendary Denis Law on Sunday, while Tottenham’s troubles also persisted as they lost 3-2 at Everton.

Manchester City roared back into form with a 6-0 thrashing of Ipswich, while Nottingham Forest’s unlikely title challenge goes on after a 3-2 victory over Southampton took Nuno Espirito Santo’s men level with second-placed Arsenal.

    – ‘We are worst team in history of Man Utd’: Amorim –

Ruben Amorim made the astonishing admission that his Manchester United flops are the worst team in the club’s history after Sunday’s dismal 3-1 defeat against Brighton.

United crumbled to a sixth loss in 11 Premier League games since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim said after his side’s wretched display at Old Trafford.

“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

Man UTD legend passes away aged 84 | 00:39

Amorim’s side are languishing in 13th place and although they are 10 points above the relegation zone, they are far from certain to avoid being dragged into the survival struggle on the evidence of Sunday’s display.

Yankuba Minteh set the tone for United’s moribund performance with an early opener for Brighton.

Bruno Fernandes equalised with a penalty before half-time, but second-half goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter left United in turmoil.

United have suffered six home league defeats this season, their most from their opening 12 matches of a season since 1893-94.

They have also lost 10 of their 22 league games this season, the earliest into a top-flight campaign that they have hit double figures for defeats since 1989-90.

“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” Amorim said.

While United have not been dragged completely into the fight for survival just yet, Amorim must find a way to get results to avoid the pressure on him becoming intolerable.

The 39-year-old arrived at United in November, hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.

But his preferred 3-4-3 formation is not suited to the players in United’s squad.

Yet, while he admitted he is only thinking of avoiding relegation now, the Portuguese coach refuses to change his philosophy.

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now,” Amorim said.

United’s latest calamity came on the day the club paid a sombre tribute to Denis Law after their legendary striker passed away aged 84 on Friday.

Postecoglou: ‘Spurs need reinforcements’ | 01:11

    – ‘Everybody is underperforming’ –

Law is immortalised in a statue of United’s ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best outside Old Trafford.

Fans laid scarves and flowers at the statue in tribute to the third highest scorer in United’s history and took part in a minute’s applause for Law prior to kick-off.

What transpired after that would have shocked Law to his core as Amorim’s team once again failed to live up to the storied history of the 20-time English champions.

“In nine games in the Premier League, we won two,” Amorim said. “Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances.

“We are underperforming and have to accept that. It’s unacceptable to lose so many games, for any Premier League club, imagine Manchester United.

“So it’s a really hard moment but we have to continue, we have to continue, there is no other way.”

United have lost six of their last seven league games against Brighton in an indication of how far they have fallen since last winning the title in 2013.

Amorim’s side host Rangers in their next game on Thursday in the Europa League, with the manager desperate for a positive result to change the mood.

“I knew it was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard,” Amorim said.

“So that’s why I’m telling we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same.

“I am just here to help my players, but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records.”

Haaland signs monster deal with City | 01:21

    – Foden stars as Man City hit Ipswich for six –

Phil Foden struck twice as Manchester City climbed to fourth in the Premier League with a 6-0 rout of struggling Ipswich on Sunday.

Foden netted either side of Mateo Kovacic’s eye-catching goal as City blew Ipswich away with three first-half goals at Portman Road.

Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and James McAtee netted after the interval as City enjoyed their biggest league win this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won three of their last four league games as they begin the long climb back to respectability after a dismal start to the season.

Sterner tests lie in wait for City, including a vital Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and looming Premier League clashes with Chelsea and Arsenal.

But this was the kind of confident display City used to make look routine during their march to four successive English titles.

Winning is almost certain to prove beyond them as they trail leaders Liverpool by 12 points.

Guardiola will settle for restoring City’s pride this term as he rebuilds a team that suddenly grew old and inconsistent before his eyes.

Haaland, who has scored 112 goals in just 127 appearances for City, this week committed himself to the club until 2034 when he signed a new nine-and-a-half year deal.

But Kyle Walker was again absent from the City side amid reports that AC Milan are ready to bid for the unsettled England right-back.

In City’s first visit to Portman Road for 23 years, the champions emphasised how powerful they can still be at peak form.

    – Ruthless City –

Haaland scored a hat-trick when City beat Ipswich 4-1 in August and he threatened to net in the opening moments in Suffolk.

Kovacic’s pass split the Ipswich defence and sent Haaland clean through on goal, but the Norway striker’s shot was pushed away by Christian Walton.

Kovacic fired wastefully over after a flowing move carved open the Ipswich rearguard again.

Omari Hutchinson almost put Ipswich ahead against the run of play with a stinging strike from just inside the area that hit Haaland and flashed just over.

But City’s pressure was rewarded in the 27th minute when Doku and Kevin De Bruyne combined to set up Foden for a clinical close-range finish.

Foden turned provider as ruthless City doubled their lead three minutes later. Kovacic strode onto Foden’s pass on the edge of the area and smashed a superb low strike past the flat-footed Walton for his first goal since October.

Guardiola’s men were rampant and they struck again three minutes before half-time.

Set free by Doku, De Bruyne raced into the area and cut the ball back for Foden, whose shot from five yards evaded Walton’s weak attempted save.

The England forward’s fifth goal in his last four games maintained his recent improvement.

City have scored 25 first-half goals in 22 games, more than any other team in the Premier League this season.

Ipswich were powerless to stem the tide. Doku danced through their defence to score City’s fourth with a low shot that hit Dara O’Shea on its way past Walton in the 49th minute.

City showed no mercy and Haaland joined the party in the 57th minute. Jack Clarke conceded possession and Doku teed up Haaland to drill past Walton for his 22nd goal in all competitions this season.

McAtee came off the bench to bag City’s sixth in the 69th minute, the 22-year-old looping a header over Walton from Kovacic’s cross.

Forest were equally rampant in the first 45 minutes to cut the gap on leaders Liverpool to six points and consolidate their lead in the race for a place in the Champions League next season.

Elliot Anderson, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood netted before the break. Southampton salvaged some pride in the second period through Jan Bednarek and Paul Onuachu but they remain on course for an immediate return to the Championship, 10 points adrift of safety.

Southampton vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction and Betting Tips | 13th January 2023

Southampton will host Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday in a match that could have major ramifications at both ends of the Championship table.

Southampton are currently third in the Championship with 52 points from 26 matches, just three short of second-placed Ipswich Town. Leicester City’s 10-point lead at the top makes them extremely difficult to catch up with but the Saints must be ready to give Ipswich a run for their money and earn automatic promotion.

Russell Martin’s men have done well in recent months and are currently on a 19-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. Their last loss came against Middlesbrough on September 23.

Prior to their 4-0 triumph over Walsall in the FA Cup last weekend, the Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by Norwich City in their latest league outing.

Meanwhile, Danny Rohl seems to be leading Sheffield Wednesday through a period of resurgence. They have picked up four wins in their last six matches in all competitions.

They beat Cardiff City 4-0 in the FA Cup this past Saturday thanks to strikes from Josh Windass, Liam Palmer, Mallik Wilks and a Romaine Sawyers own-goal.

Sheffield Wednesday picked up crucial wins over Preston and Hull City in their latest league matches and the two victories have seen them climb to 22nd in the table. They currently have a three-point gap with Huddersfield, who are right outside the relegation zone right now.

Southampton vs Sheffield Wednesday Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

    • Southampton will host Sheffield Wednesday in a league match for the first time since a 2-0 win over them in March 2011.
    • Sheffield Wednesday have failed to win in their last seven league visits to Southampton, drawing two and losing five.
    • Southampton boast the highest average possession (66.2%), the most completed passes (15,679) and the highest passing accuracy (90%) of any Championship side this season.
    • Southampton forward Adam Armstrong has been directly involved in more Championship goals than any other player so far this term (22 goal involvements – 13 goals and nine assists).
    • Only Leicester City (22) and Southampton (18) have picked up more points in the Championship than Sheffield Wednesday (15) since the start of December.

    Southampton vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction

Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s recent upturn in form, they are likely to come up short against a high-flying Southampton side. The Saints haven’t lost in any of their last 18 league matches. Sheffield can cause problems but Martin’s men are likely to prevail here.

    Prediction: Southampton 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday

PL strugglers Southampton sack ‘best in Europe’ manager Nathan Jones after just 14 games

Nathan Jones has been sacked by Southampton after just 14 games in charge.

The Welshman, 49, succeeded former boss Ralph Hasenhuttl in November but has failed to turn the Saints’ fortunes around.

The final straw came in the shape of today’s 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Wolves at St Mary’s.

The club said in a statement: “Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with Men’s First Team Manager Nathan Jones.

“First Team Coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club.

“First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will take charge of training and prepare the team ahead of next weekend’s game against Chelsea.”

Argentine Marcelo Gallardo is one of the favourites to take over, along with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and former Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

Jones won five of his 14 games in charge in all competitions after succeeding Hasenhuttl, losing the other nine.

SunSport revealed last week that the former Luton manager had already lost the faith of many members of his squad.

Many of the club’s first team squad questioned Jones’ tactics, while feeling his coaching was not at the level of Hasenhuttl’s.

He then angered some members of the team by blaming them for his reluctance to switch to his so-called “preferred style”.

Fans have also voiced their discontent towards Jones in recent weeks.

In Saturday’s dismal defeat to Wolves, Saints supporters chanted “You’re getting sacked in the morning” to the Welshman.

One fan was even kicked out of St. Mary’s for waving a giant P45 cutout with Jones’ name on.

Potter pleads for patience at Chelsea | 01:11

Jones, 49, made two big calls prior to the defeat to Wolves – dropping regular defenders Duje Caleta-Car and Armel Bella-Kotchap from the squad entirely, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles playing at centre-back.

Saints took the lead on 24 minutes, when Carlos Alcaraz converted beyond Jose Sa.

Just three minutes later Wolves ace Mario Lemina was red carded against his former club, putting Jones and Co in a commanding position.

But the ten men came roaring back, with Jan Bednarek’s 72nd minute own goal equalising for Julen Lopetegui’s side before Joao Gomes struck an 87th minute winner.

The result saw Southampton stay bottom of the pile with just 15 points from 22 games this term.

Jones said: “I’ve compromised certain principles because of personnel, but also the way people want to play — because of fans.

“I’ve been very successful playing a fluent style, Luton were a real aggressive front-footed side.

“Statistically, there weren’t many better than me around Europe in terms of aggression, clean sheets, defending the box, balls in the box, xG, all those sort of things.

“We were pound-for-pound the best because we were spending next to nothing and producing so much. I’ve gone away from that because it’s the Premier League and due to certain players and internationals.

“I’ve had to compromise certain things and I won’t do that again.”

Saints travel to Chelsea next weekend, before a trip to Leeds the following Saturday.

They will next be in action at St Mary’s on March 1, when they take on Grimsby in the FA Cup.

Gunners boss rages as refs ‘change the rules’ in shock draw, Spurs thrashed: PL Wrap

Arsenal stumbled again as the Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford, while Tottenham’s top four hopes were dented by an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at Leicester on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side could have moved eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City with a victory at the Emirates Stadium.

But Arsenal could not hold on to the lead given to them by Leandro Trossard’s first goal for the club in his fifth appearance since his January move from Brighton.

Ivan Toney scored Brentford’s equaliser to leave Arsenal without a win in their last three games in all competitions following defeats at Manchester City in the FA Cup and Everton in the league.

The Gunners still control their destiny as they chase a first Premier League title since 2004, but champions City can move to within three points if they beat Aston Villa on Sunday.

Arsenal host City on Wednesday in a clash that will go a long way to deciding the title race.

Belgium forward Trossard came off the bench to make the breakthrough for Arsenal in the 66th minute.

Bukayo Saka floated his cross to the far post and Trossard was on hand to net with a clinical finish, his first goal for either Arsenal or Brighton since October.

But Brentford drew level eight minutes later when Toney headed into an empty net, leaving Arteta fuming that VAR failed to disallow the goal for off-side against Ethan Pinnock.

“I just looked back and it is off-side, yes,” Arteta said. “It’s too late, the goal was allowed and we dropped two points.”

He further accused officials of ‘changing the rules’.

    SPURS SHATTERED

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was back at the helm after missing last weekend’s 1-0 win against Manchester City following gallbladder surgery, but his fifth-placed side were humiliated at the King Power Stadium.

Rodrigo Bentancur put Tottenham ahead in the 14th minute, meeting Ben Davies’s flick with a close-range finish that survived a VAR check for off-side.

But Nampalys Mendy levelled in the 23rd minute and two minutes later, James Maddison produced a composed low finish.

Kelechi Iheanacho scored Leicester’s third in first half stoppage-time with a curler into the bottom corner and Harvey Barnes completed the rout in the 81st minute.

“To be consistent is a long process, it’s a mental process, you have to be better mentally and better with the approach. After we scored the goal, something changed.

“We struggled a lot and we are disappointed for that. In the team something has to change, not individually. It’s about the desire,” Tottenham assistant manager Cristian Stellini said.

    – Chelsea frustrated –

Graham Potter admitted Chelsea are still “a work in progress” after their winless Premier League run extended to three games as Joao Felix’s first goal for the Blues was cancelled out by Emerson in a 1-1 draw at West Ham.

Potter’s expensively assembled side once again failed to live up to their price tags as the pressure mounted on the Blues boss.

Portugal forward Felix put Chelsea ahead in his second appearance for the club, only for Italy defender Emerson to haunt his former team with an equaliser before halftime.

Ninth-placed Chelsea have won just one of their past eight games in all competitions and are nine points adrift of the Premier League’s top four.

“They are a good group and we are excited with the team and the potential but it is still a work in progress,” Potter said.
