“After Virat Kohli, the next in line is…” – Ravi Shastri ignores Rishabh Pant as he makes bold claim

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was highly impressed with Jasprit Bumrah’s superb performance in the ongoing Perth Test between Australia and India. Shastri even claimed that Bumrah will be the next Indian superstar in Australian media after Virat Kohli.

Jasprit Bumrah completed a five-wicket haul on Day 2 of the Perth Test when he picked up the wicket of Alex Carey in his first ball of the day. He finished with a magnificent bowling spell of 5-30 and produced a captain’s performance.

Ravi Shastri’s bold claim on Jasprit Bumrah

While speaking on commentary with Star Sports, Ravi Shastri spoke about Jasprit Bumrah’s performance in Perth. He claimed that Bumrah would earn the respect of Australian media since he has performed in their own country.

“If you can perform by looking at the eyes of Australians, then you will get that respect. After (Virat) Kohli, the next in the line is (Jasprit) Bumrah. Wherever you go, it’s Bumrah. That’s because he is a world-class fast bowler,” Ravi Shastri said.

Further speaking, the former India allrounder mentioned that Jasprit Bumrah has earned respect with his performance. The right-arm quick dismantled Australia’s batting order with his world-class performance

“There is one thing about Australian crowd and media that if someone plays good cricket in front of them, they give that respect to the player. It’s Bumrah in their front page today. If he bowls such kind of a spell, then his name will automatically come in the front page. He has earned that respect.

    Impressive captaincy from Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is leading India in the ongoing Test in the absence of Rohit Sharma, who is not part of the squad currently to be with his wife for the birth of their second child.

Bumrah has not only bowled well but also led the team exceptionally well. His bowling changes were spot on in the first innings as he kept the pressure on the opposition all the time. He received good support from Mohammed Siraj and Harshit Rana in the bowling department.

    Virat Kohli’s numbers in Australia

Virat Kohli first made a mark in Test cricket in a Test match in Australia. He struck a magnificent hundred in Adelaide during India’s 2011-12 tour of Australia, which was also his maiden Test hundred as well.

It was just the start of his Test career as he went on to achieve several milestones later. He struck twin hundreds in the Adelaide Test during the 2014-15 tour as well. Kohli has a superb record in Australia and has scored 1357 runs so far at an average of over 50 with 6 hundreds and 4 fifties.

Jasprit Bumrah announces Mohammed Shami’s inclusion in India’s BGT 2024-25 squad

India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has hinted at Mohammed Shami being a part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Bumrah mentioned that Shami can still be a part of India’s squad if everything goes well in hi favor.

Mohammed Shami was not included in India’s squad for the five-match Test series against Australia as he was not fit at the time of the squad announcement. He recently marked his return from injury with a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal.

Jasprit Bumrah hints at Mohammed Shami’s international comeback

Jasprit Bumrah attended a press conference a day before the first Test between Australia and India in Perth. During the media interaction, Bumrah revealed that India have finalized its playing combination but did not reveal it.

Bumrah further added that the Indian team management is keeping a watch on Mohammed Shami’s progress and he can be a part of the squad if everything goes nice and well.

“We have finalised our combination. You’ll come to know it tomorrow. Shami has been an integral part and the management is keeping a close eye. If everything goes well, you might see him here as well,” Bumrah was quoted as saying by RevSportz.

Mohammed Shami has been a big part of India’s fast-bowling success in the past decade or so. He has won India a no. of matches with his high skill and ability to trouble the opposition batters.

    Mohammed Shami’s numbers in Australia

The 34-year-old has loads of experience bowling in all the conditions. He has played 8 Tests in Australia and picked up 31 wickets at an average of 32.16 with 2 five-wicket hauls. In his absence, India are likely to slot in another Bengal fast bowler Akash Deep for the first Test.

While he will not play the first Test match in Perth, Mohammed Shami could be back for the second Test in Adelaide, which is also the only pink-ball Test of the series. There is a gap between the first and second Test which can enable Shami to be back for the second Test match.

Shami is currently monitored closely by the BCCI’s medical team and if everything goes well, he can be a part of India’s squad soon. His inclusion will be a big boost to India’s chances for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Jasprit Bumrah to lead Team India

Jasprit Bumrah, the designated vice-captain of the team, will lead India in the absence of the regular captain Rohit Sharma, who is not a part of the team yet for the birth of his second child. Rohit is expected to join the team before the second Test in Adelaide.

Bumrah has led Team India previously as well. He led the team in 2022 against England when Rohit Sharma was out after testing positive for Covid-19. Unfortunately, India lost the match despite dominating for the most part.

Jasprit Bumrah OUT of Perth Test? Star pacer suffers huge injury scare

In a massive blow for the India National Cricket Team, the superstar pacer Jasprit Bumrah has suffered a major injury scare ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Jasprit Bumrah’s injury scare comes as a big blow because he is the stand-in skipper of the India National Cricket Team for the Test series opener, which will be beginning on November 22 in Perth.

Jasprit Bumrah hit on his shoulder

Bumrah is the designated vice-captain of the Indian team and after Rohit Sharma made the decision to skip the first Test, the leadership responsibility fell on the pacer.

Notably, Rohit Sharma didn’t travel with India to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as he and his wife were expecting their second child.

Rohit and Ritika Sajdeh were blessed with a baby boy on November 15 and the India skipper decided to stay with his family for some time. He is expected to join the team ahead of the second Test in Adelaide.

Coming back to Jasprit Bumrah, CODE Cricket journalists – Ben Horne and Dan Cherny – who were present at the stadium in Perth during the practice sessions of India and Australia, revealed that Bumrah was hit on his shoulder by a net bowler while doing the batting practice and he went down in agony.

However, they further said that the premier India pacer seemed fine after suffering the blow and was seen clicking the pictures with the net bowlers.

    He’s their X-factor – Travis Head

Bumrah has played just 40 Test matches for India National Cricket Team but is undoubtedly the most important player in the side at the moment.

His presence puts fear in the mind of the opposition, and his record against the Aussies is also very good. In 7 Tests, he has bagged 32 wickets against Australia at an average of 21.25, an economy of 2.47, and a strike rate of 51.5.

Recently, during an interaction on Fox Cricket, Travis Head labeled Bumrah as the X-factor of the Indian team. He said:

“Impossible (to face). You try to feel like you’re one step ahead, but it always feels like he’s that next step. Any format of the game, he’s incredible. He’s their X-factor, he’s the guy they go to every time, and more often than not, he’s able to produce for them. In big moments you want big players, and I think he’s their biggest.”

Much like Mitchell Johnson, he had a weird action too – Usman Khawaja

The Aussie opener Usman Khawaja, meanwhile, compared Jasprit Bumrah to Mitchell Johnson, saying that the Indian superstar also has a weird action that makes it difficult for batters to face him. He said:

“When I first faced Bumrah, I was like, ‘Oh where did that come from?’ It comes at you a little bit quicker than you expect because of the awkwardness of his action and how he releases the ball.”

“Much like Mitchell Johnson, he had a weird action too. The ball used to come out and felt like it got to you quicker because you didn’t get a look at it the whole way. Jasprit’s a little bit the same, with arms going everywhere.”

IND vs AUS: Ricky Ponting predicts the Highest Wicket Taker for Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Former Australian captain and cricket icon Ricky Ponting has named Josh Hazlewood as the standout bowler for the highly anticipated Test series between India and Australia.

Overlooking Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, and even India’s pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah, Ponting predicted that Josh Hazlewood will emerge as the top wicket-taker in the upcoming Test series.

Josh Hazlewood’s exceptional form and his consistency in recent Test matches inspired Ricky Ponting to pick the Australian pacer as the leading wicket-taker in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India, starting on November 22 in Perth.

Ricky Ponting backs Josh Hazlewood as top wicket-taker in the blockbuster India-Australia Test series

With Australia set to rotate their bowling attack due to the demanding schedule, Ponting has reckoned that Josh Hazlewood will play a key role throughout the high-voltage five-match Test series against the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team.

Hazlewood’s solid form and adaptability make him a reliable figure on both spin-friendly and seamer-friendly tracks, making him Ponting’s standout pick to lead the wickets tally in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India at home.

Hazlewood has already established himself as the Australian bowler with the most wickets in the current WTC cycle, highlighting his capability to consistently trouble and dismantle batting line-ups. With 51 wickets so far in the 2023-25 WTC cycle, Hazlewood’s effectiveness has set the stage for what could be a record-breaking series performance.

I’ll go with him for the leading wicket-taker: Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting said on the latest episode of The ICC Review: “I think Hazlewood, out of the Australian quicks, is right at the moment and is probably at the peak of his powers more than the other guys. So I’ll go with him for the leading wicket-taker.”

Apart from the bowling department, Ponting hinted at a fascinating battle for runs. He predicted that either Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant or Australia’s batting maestro Steve Smith would emerge as the leading run-scorer in the upcoming Test series.

As Steve Smith sets to return to his favored No. 4 position, Ponting backs the former captain to lead the Aussie batting line-up from the front against India. After an experimental stint at the top order, Smith’s move back to his preferred slot is expected to allow him greater stability, where his tactical prowess and shot selection can flourish in the upcoming Test series.

Ponting predicts Rishabh Pant or Steve Smith can emerge as the leading run scorer in BGT 2024-25

The Australian cricket icon further noted, “I think Smith, the fact that he’s moved back down from opener to No. 4 probably makes it feel like he’s got more of a point to prove… that maybe he shouldn’t have gone up to open in the first place and that No. 4 is his spot and where he should have probably been the whole time and where he probably finished his career now.”

Ponting signed off by saying, “And with Rishabh back in the side and probably coming into bat in the middle order when the ball’s probably lost a bit of its shine and a bit of its hardness and the form that he’s in, I’ll go for him as one of the leading run scorers as well.”

  • Sunil Gavaskar calls for a new captain if Rohit Sharma misses initial Tests against Australia

Sunil Gavaskar calls for a new captain if Rohit Sharma misses initial Tests against Australia

The legendary Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors to appoint a new captain for the upcoming Test series against Australia if Rohit Sharma is unavailable for a significant portion of the matches. With reports suggesting that Rohit may miss the first two Tests due to personal reasons, including the expectation of his second child, Gavaskar believes that clarity and stability are essential for the team’s success.

The need for leadership in BGT

Gavaskar emphasized the importance of having a consistent leader at the helm, especially following India’s recent 3-0 defeat to New Zealand.

“It will not be easy for him to take the responsibility of captaincy again. We have been reading that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first Test, perhaps he will not play in the second as well. If this is the case then I say that right now the Indian selection committee should say that you have to rest, rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them,” Indian legend told Sports Tak in an interview.

This sentiment reflects a broader understanding that a captain’s presence is crucial not just for tactical decisions but also for maintaining team morale and unity. If Rohit is unable to lead from the front, Gavaskar had advocated for vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah to take charge throughout the series. He argued that this would alleviate the pressure on Bumrah, who would otherwise be thrust into leadership mid-series under challenging circumstances.

“It is important for the captain to play the first Test. If he gets injured then it is a different matter. In such a situation, if your leader is not available in the first match, then appointing a deputy leader, the pressure that builds on him is a different kind of pressure,” Gavaskar added.

A series of high stakes for Team India

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, commencing on November 22 in Perth, holds significant implications for India’s standing in the World Test Championship (WTC). Following their recent loss to New Zealand, India find themselves in a precarious position, needing to secure four wins from five Tests against Australia to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the WTC final. Gavaskar pointed out that “there should be clarity” regarding leadership roles as the team navigates this critical juncture. The pressure of performing in Australia, particularly after a dismal home series, adds another layer of complexity.

The role of captaincy in team dynamics

Gavaskar’s insights extend beyond mere logistics; they delve into the psychological aspects of captaincy. He noted that “the captain has to unite the team,” especially after a rare home defeat. A captain’s ability to foster camaraderie and focus among players can be pivotal in high-pressure situations. With several players facing scrutiny following poor performances against New Zealand, having a steady leader could help mitigate doubts and enhance performance.

“If you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour. Because there should be clarity. It is the responsibility of the captain because when we lost 3-0 here, it is important to have a captain. Absolutely necessary,” Gavaskar explained.

As India prepares for this challenging series against a formidable Australian side, they must also contend with their own batting concerns. Rohit’s uncertain status only exacerbates these worries. The team has historically performed well in Australia, but they will need to adapt quickly to conditions and build on past experiences to succeed this time around.

  • BCCI announces Test squad for the New Zealand series, names Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain

BCCI announces Test squad for the New Zealand series, names Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand, starting on October 17 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. The selection committee has opted for continuity, retaining the same squad that recently triumphed 2-0 against Bangladesh in a two-match Test series. Currently sitting at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, India will aim to extend their dominance in the upcoming series.

Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain of Team India

One of the key highlights of the squad announcement is Jasprit Bumrah‘s appointment as vice-captain. His consistent performances in the longest format have earned him this leadership role. The pacer has been a vital asset for India across all formats, and his appointment reflects the selectors’ confidence in his ability to guide the team both on and off the field. Bumrah’s role will be crucial, especially with Mohammed Shami still recovering from an injury that has sidelined him since the 2023 World Cup final.

Changes in the squad for the New Zealand series

The only significant change to the squad is the omission of Yash Dayal, who was part of the Bangladesh series but has been left out for the New Zealand series. Meanwhile, Shami remains unavailable as he continues to recover from his ankle injury. The experienced pacer has made it clear that he will not rush back until he is fully fit, preferring to avoid the risk of long-term injury. To ensure depth, the BCCI has named four travelling reserves: Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mayank Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.

    Focus on emerging talent

Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, who didn’t feature in the Bangladesh series, have been retained for the New Zealand Tests. Both players showcased their talent during the Irani Cup 2024, with Sarfaraz scoring a remarkable double century for Mumbai and Jurel impressing with a score of 97 for the Rest of India. India may look to rotate their squad and give opportunities to these players, along with others like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, to ensure they are match-ready ahead of the highly anticipated Australia series.

  • India squad for New Zealand Test series announced, Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain

India squad for New Zealand Test series announced, Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain

The BCCI, on Friday (October 11), announced the India National Cricket Team squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand. The 15-member India squad will be led by Rohit Sharma.

High-flying India will be looking to continue their domination at home by registering another series win. Having defeated Bangladesh 2-0 a few days ago, Team India will be looking to deliver a similar performance against New Zealand. A clean sweep of the series will also all but seal India’s passage to the final of the ICC World Test Championship for the third time in a row.

India squad for New Zealand series revealed

Mohammed Shami was expected to be named in the squad but the fast-bowler has missed out once again. Shami has not played any competitive game since the World Cup final in November last year. He was sidelined with an ankle injury and is yet to make his comeback.

The selectors have decided against making too many changes to the India squad that defeated Bangladesh in the two-match Test series. Left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, who was the 16th member of the squad for the series against Bangladesh, has failed to make the cut for the New Zealand series.

The other members have retained their places in the squad. The selectors have also named as many as four traveling reserves – Nitish Reddy, Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav, and Prasidh Krishna. Both Reddy and Mayank recently made their India debut in the T20I series against Bangladesh and hit the ground running. Krishna, on the other hand, has represented India in the past while Rana is yet to play any game for India.

Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain of India squad in Tests

The biggest update in the new India squad is the appointment of Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain. Even though Jasprit Bumrah was the designated vice-captain for the series against South Africa and England earlier this year, he was not named the vice-captain for the series against Bangladesh.

There were rumors that Shubman Gill might be named as the new vice-captain. However, the selectors have named Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain once again, thus making it clear that he is being seen as Rohit Sharma’s successor.

Talking about New Zealand, they are coming to India after a dismal series defeat in Sri Lanka. They suffered heavy defeats in both the Tests against the Islanders and will be looking to make amends in the upcoming series. With only 3 wins from 8 games, they are all but out of the WTC finals race and will be looking to end their campaign on a high.

The India vs New Zealand series is scheduled to be played from October 16. The first Test will be played in Bengaluru.

India squad for the three Tests against New Zealand:

Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep

  • Ian Chappell cautions Australia against moving Travis Head up the order for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Ian Chappell cautions Australia against moving Travis Head up the order for Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has issued a stern warning to Pat Cummins and the Australian team regarding the potential move of Travis Head to the opener’s position in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.

Following the retirement of David Warner from Test cricket, Australia find themselves grappling with a dilemma at the top of the batting order. While Steve Smith temporarily filled the opener’s role, his lackluster performance—averaging just 28.5—has sparked discussions about reverting him back to his natural number four position. The shift in dynamics at the top of the order has left selectors pondering the best possible options to ensure a solid start against a formidable Indian bowling lineup.

Chappell’s insights reflect a broader concern regarding Australia’s strategy as they prepare for the high-stakes series against India. The pressure to find a reliable opener is mounting, especially given the expectations surrounding the team in a home series. With past performances weighing heavily on the players, the management must navigate this challenge carefully to build a competitive batting order.

Concerns about Travis Head’s ability to adapt

Chappell’s primary concern lies in the possibility of Head, who has enjoyed significant success at the top in white-ball formats, being tasked with the responsibility of opening in Test cricket. He emphasized that the demands of Test cricket are far more complex than those in limited-overs formats.

In his column for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell articulated his views, stating, “Head opening in Test cricket is based on his unbridled success facing the new ball in both 50-over and T20 cricket. There’s no doubt Head, with his ultra-aggressive style, is the ideal player to open in the two short forms of the game. However, Test cricket is an entirely different proposition.”

Chappell’s warning serves as a reminder that while Head has excelled in limited-overs formats, adapting to the nuances of Test cricket—such as handling prolonged spells from quality bowlers and adjusting to varying pitch conditions—may prove to be a significant challenge.

Risks of targeting India’s bowling attack

Chappell elaborated that moving Head to the opening position in an attempt to unsettle India’s star bowler Jasprit Bumrah would place undue pressure on the batter. He pointed out that Bumrah, along with fellow fast bowler Mohammad Siraj, are unlikely to change their attacking strategies, making the task even more daunting for Head.

“Any move to open with Head that is designed to unsettle Jasprit Bumrah is asking a lot of the batter. Bumrah, and to a lesser extent Mohammad Siraj, are unlikely to be battered into altering their attacking mentality,” Chappell added.

WATCH: Jasprit Bumrah bowls a beauty to remove Mehidy Hasan Miraz on Day 5 of Kanpur Test | IND vs BAN

On the final day of the Kanpur Test between India and Bangladesh, Jasprit Bumrah showcased his class yet again by producing a stunning delivery to dismiss Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The Bangladeshi batter was looking to build his innings but the star Indian pacer removed him to reduce the visitors 118/8.

    Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant delivery

In the 36th over of Bangladesh’s second innings, captain Rohit Sharma brought back Bumrah in search of a breakthrough, and Bumrah delivered immediately. In what was a near-identical dismissal to Mehidy Hasan’s first innings, Bumrah bowled a good-length delivery angled in that straightened after pitching. Mehidy, rooted to the crease, offered a tentative push with his bat, only to edge the ball. The edge flew to the right of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who made no mistake in collecting it cleanly.

The delivery, a classic Bumrah effort, once again highlighted the bowler’s precision and ability to execute under pressure. Bumrah’s inclusion in the attack for this over was a calculated move, as India looked to break through Bangladesh’s lower-order resistance, and his sharp bowling ensured India inched closer to victory.

India eyes victory as Bangladesh gets all out on a low score

As the final day of the Kanpur Test unfolds, India are in an excellent position to claim victory, as Bangladesh have been bundled out for 146, leaving India a target of just 96 runs. This outcome has left the Indian team in a strong position as they head into the final two sessions of play. The visitors struggled against a relentless Indian bowling attack, which capitalized on every opportunity and showcased excellent discipline throughout the innings.

Bangladesh’s batting woes were compounded by the quick loss of wickets, with India’s bowlers effectively executing their plans. As the last wicket fell, it became clear that the Indian bowlers had dominated the encounter, and the challenge for the Bangladeshi batsmen to set a competitive total fell short. Now, with their innings concluded, they are left to watch as India prepares to chase a relatively modest target.

India’s main goal should be to prioritize Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant’s fitness: Ian Chappell

India registered a dominating 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell has emphasized the importance of maintaining the fitness of key players Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant. As India leads the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, Chappell has pointed out the team’s priorities moving forward.

In the recent Test match, Bumrah played a crucial role in India’s success, claiming four wickets in the first innings and adding another in the second. Looking ahead, India has a challenging schedule in the WTC, with upcoming series against New Zealand (three Tests at home) and Australia (five Tests away).

In his column for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell stressed that while India should aim to get more players into form, the primary focus must be on ensuring the fitness of Bumrah and Pant.

“India’s main goal should be to get as many players into form as possible while avoiding major injuries. However, the focus must be on ensuring the fitness of Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant,” Chappell wrote.

Rishabh Pant has evolved into a skilled gloveman: Ian Chappell

The veteran also praised Pant’s progress as a wicketkeeper, particularly against spin bowling. He emphasized Pant’s improvement after an ultimatum from former head coach Ravi Shastri.

“A keeper who meets these demands not only enhances the team’s fielding but also allows slip fielders to spread wider and cover more ground. Before his serious injury, Pant’s ability to stand up to the stumps significantly improved after an ultimatum from Shastri. His evolution from a questionable keeper against spinners to a skilled gloveman at the stumps shows his dedication,” he added.

The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, set to begin on November 22 in Perth, will be a significant test for the Indian team. With five Tests scheduled across various venues, including a day-night match in Adelaide, the series will once again test the side.
