  • Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root or Kane Williamson? Ricky Ponting picks best player of the current generation

Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root or Kane Williamson? Ricky Ponting picks best player of the current generation

The debate over the greatest cricketer of this generation has long centered on four modern-day giants – Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson. Each of these batters has etched their name in cricket history with outstanding records, remarkable consistency, and game-changing performances. While Kohli dominated the previous decade with his aggressive batting and ability to chase down targets, Smith’s unorthodox technique, Root’s resurgence and Williamson’s classical stroke play have added further dimensions to this ongoing discussion.

Recently, the debate reignited after Smith reached the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket. His feat, achieved during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, cemented his place among cricket’s elite. Smith joined Australian legends Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Steve Waugh in the prestigious club.

Ricky Ponting’s choice: Best player of the current generation

Smith’s entry into the 10,000 Test runs club came in just 205 innings, making him the fifth-fastest batter to reach the landmark. Only cricketing greats Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ponting have achieved the feat in fewer innings. In the same game, Smith notched up his 35th Test century, adding yet another achievement to his already illustrious career.

Australia’s legendary captain Ricky Ponting weighed in on the debate, offering his perspective on Smith’s place among his contemporaries.

“Is he the best player of his generation? It’s hard to argue against it,” Ponting was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.

He acknowledged the brilliance of Root and Williamson, highlighting their incredible records and consistency Ponting noted that while Smith, Kohli, Williamson, and Root emerged as the “Fab Four” around the same time, Root’s transformation in the past few years has significantly elevated his standing.

“Joe Root is the other one now, and [Kane] Williamson’s record is outstanding as well. Joe’s last couple of years have elevated him right back up there, I think Five or six years ago, when this big four emerged, with [Virat] Kohli being one of those as well, Joe was probably down near the bottom part of that because he hadn’t made the hundreds the other guys had made, but he’s made 19 hundreds in the past four years,” the former Australian cricketer stated.

However, Ponting admitted that subjectivity plays a huge role in the debate.

“If you asked an Englishman, they’d say Joe Root. If you asked an Aussie, they’d say Steve Smith. If you asked a Kiwi, they’d say Kane Williamson. It’s a tough one, but on the numbers themselves, it’s hard to argue against what Smith has done,” Ponting concluded.

Can the superstar of cricket reclaim his dominance?

While Smith, Root and Williamson continue amassing records, Kohli’s form has dipped significantly, leading to questions about whether he can reclaim his once-dominant status. At 36 years old, the Indian maestro finds himself struggling to match the standards he set in the past decade. His once-unparalleled ability to dictate terms in all three formats has waned, and his recent Test performances have been underwhelming compared to his peak years.

From 2016 to 2019, Kohli was the undisputed king of world cricket, scoring runs across formats with an unmatched hunger. However, in the past few years, he has found himself grappling with inconsistency, failing to notch up big scores at the frequency he once did.

Realizing the urgency to reignite his red-ball form, Kohli has returned to domestic cricket after a 13-year absence, opting to play for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy. His presence at Arun Jaitley Stadium for Delhi’s clash against Railways created a massive buzz, with fans flocking in large numbers to witness their icon in action. The crowd erupted in deafening chants of “Kohli, Kohli,” as the Indian superstar took the field, a testament to his undying popularity despite his recent struggles.

  • Joe Root first Englishman to reach 100 Fifty-plus scores in Tests

Joe Root first Englishman to reach 100 Fifty-plus scores in Tests

Time flies by and things change in the world of cricket but only a few players have the calibre and the liking to score runs for fun. Hence, the act of breaking records becomes synonymous with them along the way. Star England batter Joe Root etched his name in the elite list of batters yet again during the ongoing second Test of the series against New Zealand, being played at the Basin Reserve, in Wellington.

This time, Root broke into record books by becoming the first English batter to score a century of fifties in the Test format. After failing to make a mark in the first innings, the 33-year-old remained unbeaten on 73* off 106 deliveries. As a result, he also became only the fourth batter in Test history to have scored fifty-plus scores. Besides, he has hit four boundaries so far and will hope to score big ahead.

Apart from Joe Root, India’s former batting legend, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring the most fifty-plus knocks during his stellar career. Notably, Tendulkar has 119 half-centuries to his name including a mind-boggling 51 centuries in the purest format of the game. The next best in the list is South Africa’s legendary all rounder Jacques Kallis who piled up 103 fifties and 45 hundreds during his illustrious Test career. While the former Australia Captain and batter, Ricky Ponting, takes the third spot with 103 fifties and 41 centuries.

Meanwhile, speaking of the second Test, after New Zealand invited England to bat first, they were in a spot of bother with scores reading 43/4 at one stage. But the duo of Harry Brook (123 off 115 deliveries) and Ollie Pope (66 off 78 deliveries) stitched a match-defining 174-run stand for the fifth wicket to make a grand comeback. Consequently, England finished their first innings with 280 runs on the board.

In reply, Atkinson’s (4/31) brilliant hattrick meant that New Zealand got folded cheaply for just 125 runs. Following that, England scored 378/5 at stumps on Day 2 and gained a lead of 533 runs. Among notable performances, Ben Duckett (92), Jacob Bethell (96) and Harry Brook (55) cracked half-centuries.

  • Nasser Hussain praises Joe Root’s exceptional batting but highlights a crucial area needing improvement

Nasser Hussain praises Joe Root’s exceptional batting but highlights a crucial area needing improvement

In a recent column for the Daily Mail, former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain praised Joe Root for his outstanding batting performance in the ongoing Test series between England and Sri Lanka but pointed out a critical area for improvement for England’s star cricketer.

Nasser Hussain urges Joe Root to sharpen catching skills

Hussain’s analysis highlights both Root’s brilliance and a crucial aspect of his game that needs refinement.

Sri Lanka, much like the West Indies, does not feature prominently on the Test cricket calendar. However, with the conclusion of this series on the horizon, England has demonstrated sufficient prowess against these teams to set themselves up for a robust challenge against Australia,” Hussain wrote.

While acknowledging Root’s superb batting, which has seen him amass significant runs, Hussain stressed a need for improvement in another aspect of his game.

Although Root’s batting was nothing short of spectacular, there is one area where he must elevate his performance — his catching. He missed several chances in this Test, and with the Ashes coming up, any missed opportunity against players like Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne could prove costly,” Hussain warned.

He also discussed the conditions and the England bowling attack’s performance.

The weather on Sunday was particularly challenging, with hot and dry conditions leading to a flat pitch that offered little spin or swing. On such days, the efficiency of the bowling attack becomes crucial. Despite the absence of key bowlers like Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson, England’s ability to dismiss Sri Lanka twice on this pitch at Lord’s was a commendable achievement,” the former England skipper noted.

On Day 3 of the second Test at Lord’s, Root showcased his batting excellence, scoring his second century of the match and his 34th Test century overall. Root’s remarkable innings of 103 came on the back of his first-innings score of 143, further solidifying his status as England’s leading century-maker in Test history.

Root’s performance at Lord’s has not only added significant runs to his tally but has also cemented his legacy at the historic venue, as he became the highest run-scorer in Test matches at Lord’s. His consecutive centuries are a testament to his exceptional skill and consistency.

  • Joe Root hits 200 catches mark in Tests, nears Rahul Dravid’s historic record

Joe Root hits 200 catches mark in Tests, nears Rahul Dravid’s historic record

The 33-year-old England National Cricket Team batsman Joe Root has achieved a massive milestone as a fielder in the second Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

Sri Lanka were set a target of 483 runs to chase to win the Lord’s Test and level the series. To achieve the humongous score, Sri Lanka needed their openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka to bat well and get off to a great start.

However, they were not able to do that and Nishan Madushka fell in the 8th over itself. On the first ball of the over, Gus Atkinson bowled a back-of-a-length delivery and the ball took the outside edge of Madushka’s bat to land into Root’s hands at first slips. He was dismissed for 13 runs off 25 balls.

The catch of Madushka was his 199th in Test cricket and he didn’t take too much time to make it 200.

Joe Root achieved the historic milestone on the last ball of the 14th over when he caught Pathum Nissanka off Olly Stone’s delivery. The pacer bowled a back of a length delivery and Nissanka while trying to defend it, got the edge and the ball flew towards Root at first slip. Pathum Nissanka got out after scoring 14 runs off 24 balls, with 3 fours.

Meanwhile, Root became the first-ever England fielder to take 200 catches in the history of Test cricket. He is just 33 at the moment and there will be no surprise if he breaks Rahul Dravid’s record for most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test cricket history.

Most catches in Test cricket history by non-wicketkeepers/fielders:

    Rahul Dravid (Ind/ICC) – 210

    Mahela Jayawardene (SL) – 205

    Jacques Kallis (SA/ICC) – 200

    Joe Root (Eng) – 200

    Ricky Ponting (Aus) – 196

He is just ticking off records this week – Michael Vaughan on Joe Root

Former England National Cricket Team captain Michael Vaughan was on-air when Root grabbed his 200th catch in Test and looking at this he stated that the star cricketer is just ticking off records in the ongoing Test against Sri Lanka.

“Joe Root was in mid-air when he took the catch. It was a good ball from Olly Stone, it had that bit of extra bounce.200 Test match catches for Joe Root. He is just ticking off records this week,” Michael Vaughan said, as quoted by BBC Test Match Special.

Michael Vaughan also opined that Root would become dangerous with the ball for Sri Lankan left-handers.

“I think Joe Root against the left-handers from the Nursery End is a real threat. I wonder if it is worth Dan Lawrence having a bowl. He has an unorthodox action, a bit different to Joe Root. It would be good to get him back in the game.”

Meanwhile, earlier in the innings, Root smashed twin centuries to break Alastair Cook’s all-time record for most Test tons by an Englishman in history. Root now has 34 Test tons to his name.

Also, he became the fourth batter in history to smash twin tons at the Lord’s in Tests. He has been in tremendous form in Test cricket in the last few years as he has smashed 17 tons since 2021, which is as many as he smashed since his debut till 2021.

Root also completed 50 tons in international cricket, becoming 9th batter to achieve this feat. Looking at Root’s ton, Nasser Hussain was left in awe, and speaking on Sky Sports, he said that the way he gets his runs is absolutely phenomenal.

Joe Root’s record-breaking century gives England the edge over Sri Lanka on Day 3 of the Lord’s Test

On Day 3, Joe Root delivered a batting masterclass at Lord’s for England, scoring his second century of the Test and the 34th of his illustrious career. Root’s exceptional knock of 103 followed his first-innings score of 143, making him the highest century-maker in England‘s Test history, surpassing Alastair Cook‘s 33 Test hundreds. In the process, Root also became the leading Test run-scorer at Lord’s and edged closer to breaking Cook’s overall run-scoring record for England. His innings was the cornerstone of England’s strategy, as they set Sri Lanka a daunting target of 483 runs to win.

Joe Root’s record-breaking century leads England to dominance

Root’s composure was evident as he navigated the morning session with minimal trouble. His fifty came up from 65 balls, highlighted by a well-timed punch down the ground off Prabath Jayasuriya. After the interval, Root shifted gears, attacking the spinner with three boundaries in quick succession. Despite Sri Lanka’s efforts to chip away at the English batting lineup, Root remained steadfast. He was eventually the last man out, top-edging a tired heave off Lahiru Kumara to deep backward square leg. Root’s brisk half-century partnership with Harry Brook was the centerpiece of the morning session, laying a solid foundation for England’s dominance.

    Morning session and key partnerships

England’s innings resumed on 25 for 1 after Dan Lawrence‘s dismissal late on day two. Early on, they lost wickets but managed to stabilize thanks to a brisk partnership between Root and Brook. Brook’s aggressive 37 from 36 balls included a significant missed chance when Nishan Madushka dropped him on 9. Brook’s innings featured a powerful slog-sweep off Jayasuriya that cleared the Tavern Stand, though he was eventually dismissed by the spinner. England’s batting effort saw several key players dismissed under pressure. Ollie Pope, England’s stand-in captain, made 17 before falling to an uppercut shot off Asitha Fernando. Ben Duckett was the first to go in the innings, dismissed in a somewhat fortuitous manner as Angelo Mathews caught a rebound off a drop.

    Impact of Root’s knock

Root’s performance was complemented by a brisk half-century partnership with Brook. Despite the wickets falling around him, Root’s calm and controlled approach allowed England to build their total effectively. His innings was marked by a variety of strokes, including a flurry of boundaries that accelerated the scoring rate. Root’s ability to adapt and push the tempo made a significant impact, as he brought up his century off just 111 balls, marking it as his fastest Test century.

As England neared their declaration, Root was joined by Olly Stone. The pair added valuable runs before Stone was caught at fine leg. Root’s final dismissal came when he top-edged a heave off Kumara, leading to his departure with the tea interval approaching. England’s innings, while marked by Root’s brilliance, also included contributions from other batters, though they were often dismissed under pressure.

Sri Lanka struggles in pursuit of a massive target

Faced with the monumental task of chasing 483 runs, Sri Lanka’s second innings got off to a rocky start. Nishan Madushka was the first to fall, caught by Root off Gus Atkinson after scoring 13 runs from 25 deliveries. Dimuth Karunaratne, the captain, showed resilience with an unbeaten 23 off 48 balls, but Sri Lanka struggled to build partnerships. Pathum Nissanka also fell to Root, caught off  Stone’s bowling after scoring 14 runs from 24 balls.

At stumps, due to bad light, Sri Lanka ended the day at 53/2 after 20 overs, with Jayasuriya unbeaten on 3 runs from 23 balls alongside Karunaratne. With 430 runs still needed to win, Sri Lanka has a steep climb ahead. In the bowling department, Atkinson and Stone were the standout performers, each claiming a wicket. Atkinson conceded 15 runs in his 4 overs, while Stone gave away just 1 run in his solitary over.

Joe Root, Gus Atkinson propel England to commanding position against Sri Lanka on Day 1 of the 2nd Test

England’s initial difficulties against the new ball were overshadowed by Joe Root’s 33rd Test century and Gus Atkinson’s robust 74 on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s. Sri Lanka’s pace trio – Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and Milan Rathnayake – each claimed a couple of wickets, demonstrating their effectiveness on a challenging pitch.

England’s early struggles and Joe Root’s resilience

England, having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, faced early challenges as the Sri Lankan bowlers exploited the conditions. Although welcoming the chance to bat first, England’s captain Ollie Pope saw his top-order falter. Lahiru Kumara dismissed Dan Lawrence in the seventh over, and Asitha Fernando’s change of ends led to the removal of Pope within the first hour. Despite these setbacks, Ben Duckett scored a solid 40 before being dismissed while attempting a reverse sweep against the spin. The introduction of Harry Brook alongside Root steadied the innings, as the duo added 97 runs in 23 overs before lunch, navigating the team to 97 for three.

Harry Brook and Root’s stand and subsequent dismissals

In the second session, Brook and Root’s partnership appeared steady until Fernando’s swinging delivery deceived Brook, who was out for 33. Root, however, continued to anchor the innings, marking his 65th fifty in Test cricket. Jamie Smith, despite struggling at times, was dismissed for 21 by Milan Rathnayake, leaving England at 200/ five by tea, with Chris Woakes joining Root.

Root’s milestone and Gus Atkinson’s flourish

Woakes and Root faced a barrage of short deliveries from Lahiru Kumara, with Kumara eventually dismissing Woakes in the 59th over. Root, having faced twelve dot balls, reached his 33rd Test century, matching Sir Alastair Cook’s record for most Test centuries by an English batters. Atkinson then showcased his batting prowess with impressive lofted shots, cover drives, and powerful hits. The pair added 92 runs for the seventh wicket, propelling England past the 300-run mark. Root’s innings came to an end for 143 after an attempted reverse scoop just before the second new ball became available. Despite this, the Sri Lankan bowlers failed to capitalize on the new ball, and Matthew Potts and Atkinson added a further 50 runs before stumps, leaving England at 358/7.

  • Joe Root draws on inner Nasser Hussain for England’s hard-fought win over Sri Lanka

Joe Root draws on inner Nasser Hussain for England’s hard-fought win over Sri Lanka

In a match defined by patience and resilience, Joe Root produced a match-winning knock that led England to a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the opening Test of the three-match series at Old Trafford. England successfully chased down a target of 205 runs, though not without a few nerve-wracking moments. Root’s composed half-century played a pivotal role in anchoring the innings after early wickets left England in a precarious position.

Following the match, Root delivered a humorous yet insightful reflection on his innings, joking that he had to “channel his inner Hussain” — a nod to former England captain Nasser Hussain, known for his dogged determination rather than explosive stroke play. In a light-hearted exchange with Hussain, while discussing his performance with Hussain and Ian Ward on Sky Sports.

“I’m still ahead of your career strike rate, but today was one of those tricky ones,” Root explained.

He acknowledged the slow and testing nature of the wicket, which had lost its pace as the game wore on, making it difficult to score quickly.

“It was a long, slow, hard grind, but we got there in the end,” Root admitted.

Root’s performance wasn’t just notable for its value in runs but for the adaptability it demonstrated. Known for his fluent stroke play, the veteran batter found himself needing to adjust his game, as muscling the ball became increasingly challenging.

I had to accumulate runs in a slightly different way,” he explained,

The veteran cricketer also shared that his teammates had humorously begun referring to him as ‘Geoff,’ a reference to the famously defensive Geoffrey Boycott.

The lads are all calling me Geoff [Boycott] upstairs“, former Test captain said.

Root on winning the match not matter what

The right handed batter was philosophical about the challenge, stating that sometimes winning requires embracing the “ugly” side of the game.

“Hopefully, it’s a one-off, but sometimes you have to win ugly. We’ve still won with a day to go, and that shows we’re sticking to the principles we believe in as a team and evolving together,” he remarked

The Old Trafford pitch, resembling subcontinental conditions, presented England with a stiff test. Root emphasized that playing Sri Lanka in such conditions was about as close to the challenge of playing in Sri Lanka itself as you could get in England.

For us to manage that well and close it out is a really good step forward for this team,” he added.

Root’s gritty knock guides England to victory over Sri Lanka

Root’s calm under pressure was complemented by vital contributions from Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, as England steadily closed in on the target. Despite a few shaky moments, England finished on 205 for 5, securing a 1-0 lead in the series. As Root pointed out, winning on difficult surfaces was a valuable experience for the team, providing not only a boost in confidence but also a testament to the squad’s growing maturity and adaptability.

With the second Test looming, England will hope to build on this momentum, while Root’s composed knock will undoubtedly remain a defining moment in this hard-fought victory.

Ricky Ponting reveals who can break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs in Test cricket

Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in Test cricket remains an unparalleled feat in the sport. With an incredible tally of 15,921 runs, Tendulkar’s career has set a gold standard for batting excellence. His consistency, technical prowess, and longevity in the game have made this record a formidable benchmark, standing as a testament to his remarkable skill and dedication.

    Close contenders

Over the years, several legendary batters have come close to challenging Tendulkar’s record but have ultimately fallen short. Ricky Ponting himself amassed 27 Test centuries and 27,000 runs, but even his impressive career could not surpass Tendulkar’s towering achievement. Similarly, Kumar Sangakkara and Jacques Kallis, despite their extraordinary performances, couldn’t go past Tendulkar.

Ponting, who is considered as one of cricket’s all-time greats, has recently put forward a potential candidate to break Tendulkar’s record. In an interview with The ICC Review, Ponting highlighted Joe Root’s current form and career trajectory and reckoned the former England captain has the ability to go past Tendulkar.

Ponting estimated that if Root continues to play 10 to 14 Test matches annually and maintains a scoring rate of 800 to 1,000 runs per year, he could close the gap within three to four years. This would mean Root could potentially break the record by the time he is around 37 years old, provided he remains in form and injury-free during this period.

“He (Root) could potentially do that. He is 33 years of age…(more than) 3000 runs behind. It depends how many Test matches they play, but if they’re playing 10 to 14 Test matches a year and if you’re scoring 800 to 1,000 runs a year, then that sort of says he’s only three or four years off getting there. So that’ll take him to 37 (years of age),” said Ponting.

Improvement and potential for breaking Tendulkar’s record

Ponting emphasized that Root has a strong chance of breaking Tendulkar’s Test run record if he maintains his current level of motivation and form. Ponting noted that Root has significantly improved over the past few years, particularly in converting fifties into centuries, a key aspect that has strengthened his game. Unlike earlier in his career, when Root often struggled to build on his starts, he now consistently converts his fifties into big hundreds, showcasing a crucial turnaround in his performance. This enhanced ability to score big innings suggests that Root could indeed reach Tendulkar’s record if he continues to play with the same hunger and consistency.

“If his hunger’s still there, then there’s every chance that he could do it. He is someone that in the last couple of years has got better and better. There’s always talk around batters reaching their prime in their early 30s and he’s certainly done that. It’s been his conversion rates being the big thing,” reckoned the Tasmanian.

“Four or five years ago, he was making a lot of 50s and struggling to go on and make hundreds and he’s gone the other way recently. Almost every time he gets to 50 now, he goes on and makes a big hundred. So that’s been the real turnaround for him,” he added.

    Fans await the development

As Root continues to build his Test career, cricket fans are eagerly watching to see if he can achieve what many thought was insurmountable. With each innings, the excitement grows as Root nears Tendulkar’s legendary record. The cricketing world remains on edge, anticipating whether the English batter will rise to the occasion and etch his name alongside Tendulkar in the record books.
