Manchester United could axe at least 10 players this summer in firesale

Manchester United will attempt to make a vast summer refresh with a colossal squad exodus incoming.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, which reveals that Old Trafford may bid farewell to a double-figure list of players.

Some of United’s big figures are anticipated to hang up their boots at the close of this season, including Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton.

Evans, at 37, hasn’t started for United in four months and last took the pitch on December 18. Meanwhile, Heaton, who will turn 39 next month, has been sidelined since early February due to an unspecified injury.

The likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof are also expected to part ways with the club.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho might be sacrificed in hopes of acquiring a new goalscorer, with Casemiro also made available for a move.

Chelsea holds an obligation to buy Sancho for between £20 million and £25 million but may consider paying a penalty clause to swerve making his season-long loan permanent.

The Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) effectively assess the value of non-academy players, determining a player’s price based on the transfer fee allocated over the duration of their contract.

Casemiro joined Manchester United for £60 million on a four-year contract in 2022, leading the club to seek £15 million for his sale to avoid a loss under PSR.

Antony was acquired for £81.3 million during the same summer on a five-year deal, costing £32.52 million, while Sancho would stand at £14.58 million if United continues to hold onto him.

Man United might also be compelled to reduce their squad as they face the prospect of a season devoid of European football, given that the Champions League and Europa League formats require an additional eight matches.

The last time United embarked on a campaign without European competition in 2014-15, they played 44 games, suffering a staggering 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup.

Already having played 46 matches this term, United is assured of at least 11 more.

In terms of goalkeepers, Altay Bayindir’s future remains uncertain. He may seek opportunities elsewhere to secure regular playing time, hoping to start for Turkey in the World Cup next year.

The Red Devils also missed out on Chelsea-bound Geovany Quenda, leaving them still searching for a new winger.

United could also bid farewell to Tyrell Malacia, currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven, who may secure a permanent transfer, while they might face challenges in offloading Luke Shaw, who hasn’t started for the club in 13 months, participating in only nine matches over the last 19 months.

The futures of promising youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho remain uncertain.

Despite not having signed a renewal, Mainoo’s current contract extends until 2028, and Garnacho faced a rejected £40 million bid from Napoli in January.

Garnacho has received consistent praise from Amorim for his adaptability, while Mainoo, despite spending nearly four months sidelined due to injuries, showcased his potential as a playmaker with a goal in the 2-0 Europa League victory over FCSB in January.

The Red Devils must also consider the long-term future of Joshua Zirkzee, who was initially signed as a support striker but is now thriving as a playmaker.

The fate of Rasmus Hojlund, too, remains to be determined.

One player significantly affected by injuries is Mason Mount, who has managed to play only 33 of a possible 98 matches for United.

Yet, he may find a second chance, as Amorim believes he could fit in his 3-4-2-1 system.

Senior sales might be complemented by homegrown departures, as Amorim has previously emphasized the need for United to enhance their efforts in selling their cultivated talents.

Last summer, United accrued £109.18 million, including add-ons, through player departures.

Since 2022, their most lucrative sales have predominantly involved academy products: Andreas Pereira, James Garner, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson, Mason Greenwood, and Scott McTominay.

Man United’s next fixture is against Nottingham Forest on April 1, with kick-off at 7pm.

Kobbie Mainoo is at a standstill with Manchester United over a new contract, talkSPORT understands.

Mainoo is keen to stay at Old Trafford, but wants a salary that recognises his value to the team.

It’s understood that he’s demanding a salary in the region of £150,000-a-week.

He is, however, wanting to extend his stay with his boyhood club.

Chelsea have been monitoring his situation with a view to a potential move.

For the Red Devils, the midfielder’s future represents a potential opportunity to cash in.

United know if they sell Mainoo this summer it would help with PSR concerns.

The Red Devils are willing to reluctantly sell homegrown players in order to comply with financial rules.

Man United ended last season with losses of £113.2million but are understood to be confident they remain compliant with the regulations.

This is due to being an academy graduate which mans that any fee received would represent 100 per cent profit.

Products of the club’s youth system would be sold for pure profit having been developed internally rather than bought from elsewhere.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho also falls into the same group.

Mainoo emerged as one of the Premier League’s breakout stars last season, establishing himself at the heart of the Red Devils‘ midfield and earning a spot in England‘s Euro 2024 squad.

Mainoo‘s rapid rise from promising young talent to international starter saw him nominated for the 2024 Golden Boy award, with the youngster tipped to continue his strong form this term.

However, the Englishman has struggled for consistency, with injuries and positional changes limiting his impact.

This term Mainoo has been limited to just 15 Premier League starts, while making 25 appearances in total for the Red Devils.

Having picked up an injury in training last month, Mainoo is expected to be ruled out until April.

‘It’s a mess’ – Only three United players escape Petit’s damning ‘average’ rant

The Manchester United squad is filled with ‘so many average players’.

That’s the view of ex-Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit, who only selected THREE players from their current crop to not possess his average tag.

    6

Man United sit 13th in the Premier League with just seven points and two wins from six following a limp 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham.

Pressure is once again mounting on Erik ten Hag, although talkSPORT understands he is set to stay as manager for the next two games at least.

Their poor start to the season has followed a summer in which they spent just shy of £180million on new signings, with little progress yet to show for their acquisitions.

    READ MORE ON MANCHESTER UNITED

World Cup winner and Arsenal legend Petit believes that United are a ‘mess’ and offered plaudits to just Andre Onana, Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

“I think there are so many troubles at Manchester United,” he said on talkSPORT Drive. “If you look at the pitch… On the pitch, it’s terrible to watch.

“But if you look at the work they’ve done so far for the last couple of years at Manchester United, especially in the transfer market, they’ve been wrong for ages.

“So, maybe you’re going to change the manager… If you put [Pep] Guardiola, the best manager, even [Mikel] Arteta on the bench at Manchester United, I’m not sure they’ll do better. Because, I think there are so many average players over there.”

Andy Goldstein asked if he could name the players he was referring to, but Petit said: “I think if they’re listening to us, I think they’ll understand exactly what I’m saying.”

Petit was then questioned on those he thinks are good enough to play at United, and he replied: “I think the goalkeeper [Andre Onana].

“I think at the moment he’s probably the only positive sign, and he’s been under criticism for months and months since he signed for Manchester United.

“I still believe [Marcus] Rashford is a great player but for the last two years he’s not there anymore because his mind is not there, and I’m pretty sure it’s about what happened at Manchester United but his own private things as well.

“But there is a couple of players that for me, you could see the quality of the players, but they cannot show it for weeks now because it’s a mess over there.”

One of United’s biggest summer signings was Manuel Ugarte, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that could potentially reach £50.8million but has so far struggled to make an impact.

Andy Townsend backs Manchester United legend Roy Keane to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford

Petit was on hand to praise the midfielder but hinted that his move to Old Trafford has been tough so far due to a lack of confidence.

“I’m not a big fan of Ugarte,” he said. “I like him, but I’m not a huge fan because he’s kind of a destroyer sometimes on the pitch. He’s a fighter, he’s a warrior, he can win balls, second balls, he can manage the balance of the team.

“But you can see that’s what happened at Paris Saint-Germain, it’s still in his head, you know? He lost confidence in the last six months with Paris Saint-Germain.

“Remember last season when they played away at Newcastle and they had been trashed 4-1 [in the Champions League] and after that game, he disappeared on the first XI, so I think he lost confidence.

“And he arrived in an environment which is very negative so if you bring players, you need to bring players with a lot of confidence, you know? To fight against this awful environment they actually have in the dressing room.”

Petit believes Ugarte has lost confidence dating back to his final months at PSG

Gabby Agbonlahor asked Petit if Ugarte can do the role that Rodri does at their rivals Manchester City, with the midfield powerhouse one of the best players in world football.

“No, definitely not,” said the former midfield man. “You cannot put Rodri and Ugarte on the same line.”

But when queried on whether or not he is a fan of Kobbie Mainoo, Petit responded: “Yes, definitely. When I saw the game against Spurs, he was out of the game and he was not very happy.

“So he was probably one of the good exceptions within the dressing room and all of a sudden, I think he’s losing his happiness as well.”

  • Mainoo took fast-track to Euro 2024 and could end amazing Rodri streak…again

Mainoo took fast-track to Euro 2024 and could end amazing Rodri streak…again

This was not part of the plan for England and Manchester United superstar Kobbie Mainoo.

Sixteen months is a long time in football, but Mainoo has made time move at lightspeed.

    4

Has anyone ever become an England legend after three senior starts?Credit: Getty

Think back to March 2023: an 18-year-old Mainoo was coming off the bench for England Under-19s in a qualifier against Hungary and yet to start a match in the Premier League.

Concurrently, Spain lost to Scotland in a match that would trigger Rodri‘s 74-match unbeaten streak for club and country.

Somehow, Mainoo’s path would cross with Rodri’s at the end of that run, and they will do battle on the biggest stage of all at the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday.

Mainoo’s meteoric rise to the top of football is quite remarkable, given he was barely considered a senior player at club level until November 2023.

Back in that fateful March, the Carrington academy graduate was only on the cusp of Man United’s first-team, having recently made his senior debut against Charlton in the EFL Cup and appearing as a substitute in a Premier League victory over Leicester.

For talented teenagers, this usually marks the beginning of a steady rise to prominence.

Phil Foden, for instance, played at every youth level for England, making his senior debut aged 20 and then spending years trying to establish a regular place in the Manchester City first-team.

Mainoo, though, has skipped all of that. He took the fast-track route and did not even have time to play for England’s Under-21s.

Mainoo's talent was evident as a young boy in the academy

The teenager’s heroics in the semi-final win over the Netherlands was only his third senior start for his country.

You would have never guessed if the first-half of that game was your first Mainoo experience.

Inspired by Ronaldinho and influenced by Manchester United duo Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo wants to emulate Jude Bellingham

Speaking at half-time, talkSPORT host Adrian Durham said: “This kid, who’s 19 years, 82 days old, he’s the youngest player to play in semi-finals of a major tournament for England.

“I can’t really believe what I’m seeing, how mature he is.

“Bear in mind how few first-team games he’s played for Man United.

“But he’s just playing like he belongs in a European Championship semi-final in an England shirt.”

And England legend Stuart Pearce added: “It’s the maturity, it’s the confidence, it’s the good arrogance.

“Give me the ball and I’ll look after the ball. It’s just quality to watch, to be quite honest with you.”

Mainoo bossed the Netherlands midfield for large spells on Wednesday

    4

Mainoo bossed the Netherlands midfield for large spells on Wednesday

It is not the first time, either. Man United fans will tell you he bossed Liverpool’s midfield in the FA Cup last season, too.

Having been at Old Trafford since the age of nine, a stunning breakthrough season for the Red Devils culminated in Mainoo scoring a winner in the FA Cup final against Man City.

In doing so, he broke Rodri’s incredible run of 74 games without losing a match for City – the longest invincible run by a player in history.

At 28, the Manchester City midfielder is already a football legend, with four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy locked away in his cabinet.

He has been one of the most important members of team that many consider the greatest in English football history.

And yet, a man who just arrived on the same stage could now put a second dent in Rodri’s legacy.

Mainoo has ruined Rodri's day before in a final and will be loved across the country if he does it again

    4

Suddenly, Mainoo heads to the biggest game of the football season as one of his nation’s most important players.

Rodri is still unbeaten in 470 days for Spain and major tournament success with La Roja would help crown him as the best midfielder of his generation.

Time gives Mainoo no right to share the same stage and fight for the same heritage.

But sixteen months in the life of Mainoo shows that time means very little.

  • ‘Devastated doesn’t quite cut it’: England stars left ‘absolutely gutted’ after Euros snub

‘Devastated doesn’t quite cut it’: England stars left ‘absolutely gutted’ after Euros snub

Jack Grealish was a shock omission from England’s Euro 2024 squad as Gareth Southgate axed the Manchester City winger on Thursday after his disappointing end to the season.

Grealish paid the price for a significant dip in form in the second half of the Premier League campaign as he became the most high-profile star to be dropped from Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad.

The 28-year-old wasn’t the only big name to suffer Euros heartache as Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Tottenham playmaker James Maddison also missed out.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!

Grealish was an unused substitute during City’s FA Cup final defeat against Manchester United in May after being left out of the Premier League champions’ title-winning game against West Ham.

He did feature for England as a substitute in their win in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, but it wasn’t enough to convince Southgate to take him to Germany.

Maguire was unable to prove his fitness after struggling with a calf injury, while Maddison endured a poor end to the domestic season.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford and Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah were the other omissions from Southgate’s final 26-man squad.

The Football Association revealed the squad ahead of schedule as players who missed out made their omissions public.

“All the players took the news really respectfully. Of course, all players will think they should be in and that’s why they are top players,” Southgate told reporters.

“They have that self-belief and mindset, but the fact is we have some players who have been playing extremely well in the league all season.

“We just felt other players had stronger seasons particularly in the last six months or so.”

Maguire has been a mainstay of Southgate’s defence throughout his reign as coach.

But the 31-year-old centre-back’s failure to recover for United’s FA Cup final win against Manchester City in May – after spending several weeks on the sidelines – left him with little chance of winning his fitness battle.

“Harry has made some progress but it’s been complicated, we definitely wouldn’t have had him for the group stages,” Southgate said.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk, Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa will compete to play along Manchester City’s John Stones at the heart of England’s defence.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,” Maguire said on Instagram.

“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.”

Maddison’s recent struggles at Tottenham – combined with stiff competition in his position from Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka – delivered a fatal blow to his hopes.

“Devastated doesn’t quite cut it,” Maddison said on social media.

“Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set.”

United left-back Luke Shaw is in the squad despite not playing since February, while his club teammate Kobbie Mainoo, 19, is the youngest member of the group.

“At the moment we think he could have some involvement in the second group game, but you have to keep hitting the markers,” Southgate said of Shaw.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, 20, is included after a strong spell since his move from Blackburn in January.

England, chasing a first major trophy for 58 years, start their Euros campaign against Serbia on June 16 before facing Denmark and Slovenia in their other Group C fixtures.

Southgate, whose side host Iceland in their last warm-up on Friday, said: “It’s a very open tournament. We’re excited about our prospects.

“We’re experienced, but we know we have to deliver in this moment.”

  • The wholesome reason why United’s FA Cup hero Kobbie Mainoo is learning Spanish

The wholesome reason why United’s FA Cup hero Kobbie Mainoo is learning Spanish

FA Cup match-winner Kobbie Mainoo has been learning Spanish since last summer at Manchester United as an avid linguist.

Mainoo has enjoyed a breakout campaign at United this season, catapulting himself onto the world stage with his wonderful winner against Wolves in February.

His performances have earned the 19-year-old a spot in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad ahead of Euro 2024.

And his stunning campaign for United has ended with him scoring the eventual winner in the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City.

While the England international might have little reason to learn another language, the midfielder has revealed he has been learning Spanish for the past year.

The youngster was sidelined with injury in pre-season and decided to pick up the lingo as a hobby.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Mainoo said: “I started Spanish lessons on Zoom just to pass the time a bit.

“It’s tough to keep doing them now with the schedule being so busy. Now it’s into summer I’ll try to pick it up again because I enjoyed it.”

Mainoo might already be one of United’s key players in midfield, adding energy and dynamism that was severely lacking with Christian Eriksen and Casemiro coming to the end of their careers.

But the teenager is not the only youngster making an impression under Erik ten Hag, with Alejandro Garnacho – United’s other goalscorer against City at Wembley – also one of the first names on the team sheet.

The 19-year-old, who has chipped in with ten goals and five assists in 51 matches this term, come up through the academy with Mainoo, who is keen to converse with the Madrid-born starlet.

And that includes discussing goal celebrations before kick-off, leading to one shining moment this season for the Red Devils that saw Garnacho, Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund celebrate together on the advertising boards against West Ham in February at Old Trafford.

Mark Goldbridge discusses Chelsea sacking Mauricio Pochettino, Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich and Erik Ten Hag’s future as the managerial merry-go-round continues

Mainoo added: “I always ask Garna[cho] before the game what’s the celebration gonna be if he scores and he said he wasn’t gonna tell me.

“He was like, ‘I’m not telling you! I’m not telling you!’ So I’m like, ‘Okay’.

“But I saw him jump up on the advertising board when he scored and me and Rasmus just jumped up there with him. It was a nice picture.

“All of us young guys – Amad [Diallo] as well – we have a lot of fun together and we’ve definitely grown close this season.”

United will be banking on their youthful duo even more so next season after showcasing their skills this year.

There is plenty of turmoil at the club, including speculation on Ten Hag’s job, but the Red Devils put that aside to win the FA Cup on Saturday.

And they can thank Mainoo and Garnacho following their 2-1 win over City.

The duo created FA Cup history with no final previously seeing two teenagers get on the score sheet.

Ten Hag masterminds United to FA Cup glory to deny City from creating history

Manchester United have exacted the ultimate revenge on Man City by beating them 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

United fended off a late comeback from City after Jeremy Doku pulled one back late on, following Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo’s first-half strikes.

The Red Devils lost against the Citizens in last season’s showpiece match at Wembley, but came out on top this time in Erik ten Hag‘s potentially last match in charge.

It was only last weekend where City eclipsed United’s top-flight record by winning four consecutive league championships.

And United have now stopped Pep Guardiola‘s men from creating further English history, where they have failed to become the first team to win the league and FA Cup double in back-to-back campaigns.

After a slow start to the derby, the game sprung into life in the 30th minute when Garnacho capitalised on a City mix-up at the back.

Diogo Dalot sent forward a hopeful lofted pass, which saw German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega race out.

Josko Gvardiol – unaware the shot-stopper was so far off his line – then headed the ball back over the onrushing Ortega, allowing Garnacho to tap home from a few yards out.

United then doubled their lead nine minutes later in one of the team goals of the season, with Mainoo finishing off the move after being expertly picked out by Bruno Fernandes.

The goal saw United create FA Cup history, with it being the first time two teenagers have scored in a final.

It was all City in the second half, with Erling Haaland hitting the woodwork moments after the break, before substitute Julian Alvarez fired wide after being found by Phil Foden.

They finally halved the deficit in the 87th minute through Doku’s low drive, but they were unable to snatch a last-gasp equaliser.

Pitch side footage shows Kyle Walker’s heated row with Lisandro Martinez as the Argentine gets subbed off during the FA Cup final

Few gave United any chance of beating the Premier League champions after Ten Hag’s side finished eighth in the table – their lowest position in Premier League history.

But they have made sure to end their season on a high – and what a way for Ten Hag to bow out should he be relieved of his duties.

talkSPORT reported prior to Saturday’s clash that victory in the FA Cup isn’t guaranteed to keep the Dutchman in a job.

But he has now guided United to silverware in his two seasons having triumphed in the Carabao Cup last term.

And he has also become the first manager to beat Guardiola’s City in a domestic cup final since he took charge in 2016.

The young midfielder was replaced by Erik ten Hag in the 65th minute of the clash at Old Trafford with the scores tied at 0-0 at the time.

That decision was met with boos from the Manchester United fans, who weren’t impressed at the decision to replace the wonderkid.

Alongside Mainoo, Hojlund was also subbed off with the pair being replaced by Amad Diallo and Scott McTominay.

In footage captured from a fan in the stand, the Danish striker was seen walking around the pitch to the dugout when Mainoo’s number was held up.

Responding to the decision, Hojlund could be seen tilting his head with a bemused look on his face.

Ten Hag was questioned about the decision post-match and stuck to his guns, saying: “I am the manager and have to decide what the team needs.

“It was the right decision and totally logical to bring off very young players who are in their first year of the Premier League and feel some fatigue.

“They [Mainoo and Hojlund] have both had injuries this season and I want to protect them.”

Man United went on to take the lead through Antony before Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty denied the Red Devils all three points.

That result, plus Aston Villa’s draw to Chelsea later on Saturday means Man United will not finish in the top four.

With fifth place unlikely to be awarded to the Premier League for a bonus place in the Champions League, the 20-time English champions will have to settle for either Europa League, or even Conference League football.

At just 18, Mainoo has forced his way into Manchester United‘s first team this season, making 23 appearances for Erik ten Hag’s side.

But as well as now being a regular starter, the 18-year-old has been rewarded with a call-up to England’s senior national squad.

He was handed his debut during England’s 1-0 defeat to Brazil at Wembley on Saturday, coming on in the 75th minute of the match.

While the Premier League has been stunned by Kobbie Mainoo, one of his teammates got a taste of things to come far earlier.

The Manchester United youngster has not only convinced Erik ten Hag in record time, but Gareth Southgate too.

The England manager has rewarded the 18-year-old with a first senior call-up, and Mainoo could now debut in friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

And the way things are going, it’s certainly not out of the question that he could book a spot at Euro 2024 having made himself a starting XI regular in his breakthrough season.

Last time out Mainoo impressed as he showed off against a vastly more experienced Liverpool midfield, helping United to a famous 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final win.

Many were left blown away by the teenager, but not teammate Harry Maguire, who’s had his eye on him for a long time.

“I’ve been a massive fan of Kobbie’s since he first started training with us,” the defender explained.

“I remember talking to Tom Heaton about him and I was saying, ‘I feel like this boy has got everything’.

“He can handle the ball brilliantly. He’s really strong, powerful, and you can see his progression to play that number six role, especially for United.

“The ‘six’ role is a huge responsibility and I’m sure the positional part of his game will improve drastically.”

Mainoo was arguably Man of the Match against Liverpool as a defensive midfielder alongside Scott McTominay, and showed his huge promise against a highly-rated midfield trio.

That performance may have tipped Southgate towards making the call, and Maguire thinks it’s entirely justified, especially considering his mental likeness to one other star youngster in the squad.

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo reacts to getting his first ever call-up to the England Squad

“You’ve seen the amount of ability and talent he has, and he fully deserves his call-up,” the former United captain said. “A role and responsibility for the senior players at Manchester United is to bring through academy players.

“The club is always built on giving opportunities to youngsters, we have numerous of them training with us a lot, we try to make them feel welcome and we have done that to Kobbie.

“I didn’t have  any concerns about Kobbie. It’s incredible he’s only 18, he’s so mature. He’s a bit like Jude [Bellingham] when he was a young boy. He’s got a mature head on his shoulders.

“I see day in, day out, his ability in training. I’ve congratulated him, he thoroughly deserves this. He has been excellent for us this season.”

But can Mainoo book his seat on the plan to Euro 2024?

“I don’t see why not,” Maguire added. “To play at a major tournament, it’s big to have experience but also the young ones do come in and sometimes they play with no fear and can excel.

“We have a lot of good centre-mids, players who have shown that they can do it in major tournaments.

“He’ll keep working hard, I’m sure he will, because he’s a great lad. And we will see where it goes.”
