‘Unacceptable’: Arsenal boss storms out of interview, left fuming as grim PL reality sinks in

Declan Rice’s equaliser denied Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim a much-needed win but Arsenal’s faltering Premier League title challenge suffered another damaging blow in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Gunners sit 15 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, now with just one game in hand, with their focus beginning to turn to holding off the chasing pack for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick put United ahead in first-half stoppage time.

The Red Devils, though, could not hold on for just a sixth Premier League win in 16 games under Amorim as Rice swept home on 74 minutes.

United missed a string of late chances to win the game, with a point leaving them down in 14th.

“How we conceded chances in certain moments was not acceptable,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“They have so much quality and they pick the right player and normally that would end in a goal.

“We opened the gate to lose the game. there was no chance to lose the game and we opened it ourselves. I will defend my players all the time but in those moments we have to do better.”

Arteta, however, was in no mood to answer questions about the club’s failure to make signings in January amid a striker injury crisis, or about its stuttering title challenge.

The Arsenal boss awkwardly ended a post-match interview abruptly when asked about both matters.

Asked if he regrets not signing a striker in January, Arteta shook his head, said ‘no, it’s not about that’, then started trying to exit.

Stopped and asked for one more question, Arteta paused. But when the interviewer started to point out the 15 gap to Liverpool in the title race, the Spaniard said ‘no’ and completed his walk off.

Spurs salvage draw against Bournemouth | 01:30

Also feeling the heat will be United boss Amorim.

United have had three permanent managers and an interim during Arteta’s five years in charge of Arsenal.

Amorim said he knows he will not get the time Arteta did to turn around a sinking ship at Old Trafford.

The discontent among the home support could be seen around the stands with many taking part in a protest by wearing black over what they perceive as “the death” of their club.

“This club will never die, that is clear,” said Amorim. “You feel it in the streets. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it is harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.”

Arsenal had failed to score in either of their previous two league games to realistically wave goodbye to their hopes of a first title in 21 years.

Premier League wrap: Arsenal fall behind | 03:13

Despite still missing the attacking quartet of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, the Gunners hit back in stunning fashion to thrash PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Infused with fresh confidence, Arsenal started on the front foot but again missed the focal point of a natural centre-forward.

Midfielder Mikel Merino has been forced to deputise upfront in recent weeks and fired wide from the edge of the area with an early opening.

United have struggled for goals all season, but their skipper has remained a source of inspiration and Fernandes produced once more with a sumptuous free-kick just before halftime.

Questions will be asked over Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s starting position, but Fernandes still had to whip the ball over an imposing wall and back down into the visitors’ net.

Spurs suffer huge Europa League blow | 01:41

    – Raya rescues Arsenal –

If Raya was at fault for the opener, he made amends with a string of saves in the second period.

Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee were the first to be denied as United threatened a second on the counter-attack.

Arteta was able to throw on Martinelli on his return from a hamstring injury in the hunt for an equaliser.

Instead, it was Rice who matched Fernandes’ fine finish by arrowing a shot beyond Andre Onana from Jurrien Timber’s pass.

Amorim had dropped Rasmus Hojlund to the bench after a run of 19 games without a goal.

The Dane should have ended that streak when he allowed Rice to get back and make a goal-saving challenge.

More Raya heroics followed to stop Fernandes from snatching a winner as the match entered stoppage time.

However, a draw did little for Arsenal’s title challenge.

Arteta’s men edge four points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest and eight clear of Manchester City in fifth in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham lost 1-0 at AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday.

That competition represents Tottenham’s last chance of fulfilling Postecoglou’s boast that he always win a trophy in his second season.

Languishing in 13th in the Premier League, Postecoglou’s side have gone three games without a win in all competitions.

‘UNACCEPTABLE’: Arsenal boss storms out of interview, left fuming as grim PL reality sinks in

Tottenham conceded in the 42nd minute when Marcus Tavernier applied the finishing touch to Milos Kerkez’s pin-point cross after Pedro Porro carelessly conceded possession.

Bournemouth struck again in the 65th minute as Evanilson raced onto Justin Kluivert’s pass and lifted a composed finish over Guglielmo Vicario.

But Pape Sarr reduced the deficit two minutes later, the Tottenham midfielder catching out Bournemouth keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a misjudged cross that somehow dipped in at the far post.

Tottenham completed their escape in the 84th minute as Kepa conceded a penalty with a desperate lunge on Son Heung-min.

Son calmly slotted home from the spot for his first goal in 10 games, taking him to 11 in all competitions this season.

    – Spurs must show fighting spirit against Alkmaar: Postecoglou –

Ange Postecoglou urged Tottenham to replicate the fighting spirit that salvaged a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth when they return to action in Thursday’s crucial Europa League tie with AZ Alkmaar.

Postecoglou’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat in the last 16 first leg at AZ on Thursday and looked set for another loss when Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth a half-time lead on Sunday.

Cristian Romero’s return after a three-month injury absence did little to improve Tottenham’s fortunes as Evanilson doubled Bournemouth’s advantage after 65 minutes.

With the atmosphere turning toxic in north London and the pressure mounting on Postecoglou, Tottenham showed some much-needed character to scramble out of trouble.

Pape Sarr’s miscued cross crept in to give Tottenham a fortunate lifeline and Son Heung-min converted an 84th-minute penalty that the South Korean won himself.

Languishing in lower mid-table in the Premier League, Tottenham can now turn their attention to the visit of AZ on Thursday in the second leg.

“Chaotic game, for sure. We added to the chaos and it was a little bit self-inflicted, especially in the first half. Just with the ball, we were really careless with our passing,” Postecoglou said.

“At 2-0 down, it would have been very easy, particularly with the atmosphere as it was, for the boys to just let the game get away from us, but credit to them, they found a way to get back into the game and we got something out of it.

“I don’t think it was a case of being open because we were throwing men forward, we just kept giving the ball away. We certainly need to be better in the way that we execute that part of our game for Thursday.

“You can imagine the noise around if the players didn’t respond. Thursday is obviously a massive game for us.

“At least from that perspective – and even for the players themselves – we’ve obviously got a challenge, but they overcame a fairly big challenge today and hopefully we show the same kind of mindset.”

Adding to Postecoglou’s woes, Romero’s first appearance since December was followed by a pointed social-media post where he thanked the medical staff of Argentina and not Tottenham on his X account.

Micky van de Ven also returned for his first league fixture in three months and lifted a nervous crowd, which Postecoglou conceded could lead to more tension among his players in the AZ clash.

“I can’t sort of dictate to people how they sort of interact, but AZ’s crowd certainly helped them on Thursday night and we need our crowd to get behind the boys,” he said.

“To make it an atmosphere where maybe we lose some of that nervousness and anxiety within our game.

“The reality is, we as a team have to respond irrespective of the atmosphere and one may follow the other. If we start the game strong, it’ll get the place nice and loud, which will help us.”

    ARSENAL HOPES ALL OVER

Arsenal’s fading hopes of winning the Premier League suffered a fresh blow as Manchester United held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw, while Chelsea boosted their bid to qualify for the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Leicester on Sunday (Monday AEDT).

After Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Southampton moved the leaders 16 points clear at the top on Saturday, there was no margin for error when Arsenal arrived at Old Trafford 24 hours later.

But United captain Bruno Fernandes put the hosts ahead with a superb free-kick in first half stoppage-time.

Declan Rice’s clinical finish from just inside the United area hauled Arsenal level in the 74th minute.

But Mikel Arteta’s second-placed side couldn’t find a winner and now sit 15 points adrift of Liverpool.

Despite holding a game in hand on Liverpool, Arsenal look certain to miss out on the title yet again after finishing as runners-up for the last two seasons.

Liverpool are bidding to win a record-equalling 20th English title and their first since 2020 in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

The Anfield club need a maximum of 16 more points from their last nine matches to ensure they clinch the silverware.

Not for the first time, Arsenal have faded as the title pressure mounts, with a run of three league games without a win effectively gifting the trophy to Liverpool.

Troubled Manchester United are down in 14th place, with just one win in their last six games in all competitions.

Adding to the gloom around Old Trafford, thousands of United fans staged a pre-match protest against co-owners the Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe.

At Stamford Bridge, Marc Cucurella struck with a long-range rocket in the second half to lift Chelsea above Manchester City into fourth place.

The Blues are two points ahead of City in the race for the top four finish that guarantees a Champions League berth.

It was only Chelsea’s fourth victory in their last 12 league games as they responded to boss Enzo Maresca’s challenge to win all their remaining home matches.

Maresca believes that should be enough to ensure Champions League action, but Chelsea will have to improve on a spluttering performance against second-bottom Leicester.

    – Cucurella lifts Chelsea –

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer missed the first penalty of his career and was later substituted, making it seven league games without a goal or assist for the England forward.

Second-bottom Leicester have lost five successive league games and sit six points from safety as they slide towards relegation.

Victor Kristiansen’s clumsy challenge pole-axed Jadon Sancho, earning Chelsea a first half spot-kick.

Usually such a ruthless penalty taker, Palmer seized the ball, only for Mads Hermansen to deny him with a superb save.

Chelsea finally took the lead in spectacular fashion on the hour when Spanish defender Cucurella drilled into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Manchester City overcame a wasteful Tottenham 1-0 courtesy of an early goal from Erling Haaland upon his return to the starting line-up, while Arsenal and Nottingham Forest drew as Manchester United overcame some horrific defensive blunders to earn a come-from-behind win against 18th placed Ipswich Town.

    LIVERPOOL MARCH ON

Liverpool now sit 13 points clear of Arsenal, with a game in hand, as they overcame Newcastle 2-0 at Anfield despite suspended manager Arne Slot having to watch from the stands.

Dominik Szoboszlai buried an 11th minute goal after being fed through by Luis Diaz to open the scoring, and Alexis Mac Allister rifled home the second in the 63rd minute after a one-two with Mohamed Salah following a Newcastle turnover in midfield.

Liverpool continue to hog the Premier League spotlight as an almost-flawless campaign approaches a memorable climax.

The Reds look certain to win the Premier League for the first time since 2020, which will move them level with Manchester United on a record-equalling 20 English titles.

Having won 2-0 at fading champions City on Sunday 24 hours after Arsenal lost to West Ham, Slot’s men kept their foot on the gas to turn the title race into a procession.

Szoboszlai netted with a clinical finish in the 11th minute and Mac Allister’s fine strike in the 63rd minute made it 20 wins and just one defeat from 28 league games this term.

In his first season after replacing Jurgen Klopp, Slot has made an astonishing impact, which could yet include Champions League and League Cup glory as well.

The Reds play Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16 first leg next week and face a rematch with Newcastle at Wembley in the League Cup final on March 16.

    TOP FOUR RIVALS STALEMATE

Second-placed Arsenal and third-placed Nottingham Forest played out a scoreless draw at the City Ground, allowing Liverpool to extend their lead at the top.

The Gunners had the better of the match, statistically, registering 13 shots to six and having 65% possession as their midfield controlled the match.

But only one of Arsenal’s shots was on target, compared to two from Forest.

The hosts defended resolutely to make it appear as if the game would never break open, and they also never seriously threatened in attack.

A point is enough to keep Forest in third, ahead of defending champions Manchester City.

Arsenal’s title chances have been hampered by injuries suffered by Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz.

Midfielder Mikel Merino was retained by Arteta in a centre-forward role despite failing to impress in a shock 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

In the absence of fit and in-form attackers, Arsenal have been reliant on defenders coming up with big goals and Riccardo Calafiori nearly obliged.

The Italian international came closest to scoring for the visitors when his first-half effort came back off the inside of the post.

Merino forced Matz Sels into his only serious save with a header from a corner early in the second period.

Arsenal did at least limit Forest to precious little as an attacking threat. Chris Wood had the hosts’ only chance 20 minutes from time but Forest’s talisman fired too close to David Raya.

However, after three defeats in their last four league games, Nuno Espirito Santo may see this as a point gained in his side’s challenge to reach the Champions League for the first time, having last played in the European Cup in 1980.

    UNITED SURVIVE DEFENSIVE HORROR SHOW

Meanwhile, Manchester United came from behind to pick up a 3-2 win at Old Trafford against relegation battlers Ipswich Town.

The visitors scored after just four minutes courtesy of a defensive breakdown by the hosts.

United defender Patrick Dorgu ran down a long ball over the top and tried to touch it back to André Onana, but the goalkeeper had come out to collect the ball himself and Dorgu’s touch took the ball behind Onana.

The blunder was a gift for Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene who ran onto the ball and tapped it into an empty net.

United hit back with two goals in the space of just four minutes to take the lead, however.

An own goal off Ipswich captain Sam Morsy’s head from a United free kick levelled the scores before defender Matthijis de Ligt scrambled home a rebound from a corner in the 26th minute.

But then things got chaotic again with Dorgu’s horror night ending via a red card after a dodgy tackle that missed the ball and collected Omari Hutchinson’s shins.

Reduced to ten men, United then conceded an equaliser in added time with Philogene scoring his second to head into the sheds at 2-2.

The script flipped again three minutes after the break, with Harry Maguire heading home United’s third goal, all of which have come from set pieces.

Elsewhere, Brentford drew 1-1 at home to Everton with Yoane Wissa scoring on the stroke of half time for the hosts before Jake O’Brien found an equaliser in the 77th minute.

Liverpool’s huge title statement in City humbling; four goals in 11 mins ignite top-four race: Premier League Wrap

Mohamed Salah was again Liverpool’s star performer as he opened the scoring with his 30th goal of the season before setting up Dominik Szoboszlai to double the lead before half-time.

Just days after exiting the Champions League to Real Madrid, this was another sobering defeat for the dethroned English champions, who are now 20 points adrift of the leaders.

So often during Pep Guardiola’s glorious reign, Liverpool have come up just short in English football’s great rivalry of recent years.

However, their time to match Manchester United’s record of 20 English top-flight titles now appears just months away in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

Arsenal’s shock 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday had eased the pressure on Liverpool, that had built after dropping points in two of their last three games at Everton and Aston Villa.

Newcastle hold on in SEVEN goal thriller | 01:18

A trip to the Etihad has for so long been the stiffest test of all, but City’s defensive frailties were easily exposed and they also badly missed the presence of the injured Erling Haaland in attack.

Liverpool, by contrast, had their talisman fit and firing as Salah took his staggering tally this season to 25 goals and 16 assists in 27 Premier League appearances.

The Egyptian fired the visitors in front on 14 minutes thanks to a brilliantly executed set-piece routine.

Alexis Mac Allister’s corner was flicked by Szoboszlai into Salah’s path and his shot deflected off Nathan Ake past the despairing dive of Ederson.

At the other end, City’s own Egyptian international showed his ability to finish, but Omar Marmoush had strayed off-side before being played in by Phil Foden.

City winger Jeremy Doku was skipping past Trent Alexander-Arnold at will, yet the Belgian consistently failed to deliver a telling cross or shot.

Salah was not so forgiving as he raced onto a long ball over the top and teed up Szoboszlai to wrong-foot Ederson.

The final outcome could have been much more humiliating for City had Liverpool had been as accurate on the counter-attack after the break.

Curtis Jones had a third goal ruled out by a VAR review for off-side after Szoboszlai just failed to time his run through the heart of the City defence.

“We didn’t hit the levels today!” | 01:02

Ederson was forced into a stunning save from Luis Diaz and only a brilliant last-ditch tackle from Abdukodir Khusanov denied Szoboszlai a second.

Marmoush scored a hat-trick in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Newcastle and remained a lively threat as he flashed another effort across the front of Alisson Becker’s goal.

But City lacked the end product to make nearly 70 per cent possession count. Despite an eighth league defeat of the season, Guardiola’s men remain in fourth and will be confident of securing their place in the Champions League next season with a top-five finish likely to be enough.

However, after an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles, City look like yesterday’s team with Liverpool now champions in waiting.

    – ‘We need another title’, says Salah after ‘special’ Man City win –

Mohamed Salah said Liverpool’s veterans need another Premier League title after inspiring a 2-0 win at Manchester City to surge 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Salah was central to a statement win for the Reds as he opened the scoring and then teed up Dominik Szoboszlai to double Liverpool’s lead before half-time.

Arne Slot’s men are in a commanding position to secure a record-equalling 20th English top flight title, although second-placed Arsenal have a game in hand.

City, who have won the last four Premier League titles, are now 20 points behind the leaders down in fourth.

    Spurs win 3rd straight – Gunners choke | 03:05

“It is incredible. It is a very hard place to come and play here,” said Salah after Liverpool’s first league win at the Etihad for a decade.

“They are a tough team and they have an incredible manager I am glad in the end we won the game. It is special. Especially when you are in the title race, it is incredible.

“Hopefully we keep calm because sometimes the pressure gets to us.”

Salah took his tally for an incredible season to 30 goals and 21 assists and said he is enjoying his football more than ever despite speculation over his future.

The 32-year-old, captain Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson were all part of the Liverpool side that ended a 30-year wait to win the title in 2020.

And Salah reiterated his belief that they need another Premier League winner’s medal to burnish their legacy.

“Maybe people prefer my first seasons or now but I prefer now because winning the league, helping the young players, it is special,” he added.

“We need another title. Me and the big guys in the team, we need another title.”

    – Forest felled by Isak as Newcastle bolster top four bid –

Newcastle blew Nottingham Forest away with four goals in 11 minutes as Alexander Isak’s double inspired a vital 4-3 win in the race to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

Eddie Howe’s side recovered from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s early opener to run riot with a first half goal spree at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Lewis Miley bagged Newcastle’s equaliser, sparking an astonishing spell of dominance as Jacob Murphy put the hosts ahead.

Isak netted twice in less than two minutes to reach 50 Premier League goals and leave Forest in tatters.

The Sweden striker has 19 league goals this season, taking him level with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland in second place behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in this season’s scoring chart.

Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates scored for Forest in the second half, but it was too late for an incredible escape act.

After three defeats in their previous four league games, fifth-placed Newcastle are back in the hunt to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.

The Magpies are behind fourth-placed Manchester City on goal difference, with third-placed Forest just three points above them.

“I’m trying to control my thoughts and stay positive. We won the game and that’s what we needed to do,” Howe said.

“It was a great performance in the first half, then a couple of frailties showed in terms of defending set plays.

“We can reflect on that. There are things we can do better. We pride ourselves on getting the details right.”

    Leicester lose 6th straight game | 01:21

Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo added: “In the first half I didn’t recognise our team. In the second half we were much better.

“We made mistakes. It was two totally different halves. We started well and then they just rolled over us.” Newcastle keeper Nick Pope made his first league start since early December in place of Martin Dubravka.

But Pope was partially at fault as Newcastle gifted Forest the lead in sloppy style after just six minutes Jacob Murphy lost the ball in his own half as Hudson-Odoi pressured the Newcastle midfielder into conceding possession.

Hudson-Odoi wasn’t closed down quickly enough by Dan Burn and the winger unloaded a powerful low drive that caught Pope out of position as it flashed into the net.

Miley ensured Newcastle’s strong response to that early setback was rewarded in the 23rd minute.

    – Newcastle hold on –

With Forest’s usually rock-solid defence slow to react, Miley had time to control Lewis Hall’s pass inside the penalty area and drill his shot through a sea of legs past unsighted keeper Matz Sels.

Murphy made amends for his earlier mistake to put Howe’s team ahead two minutes after Miley’s equaliser.

Hall’s driving run was the catalyst as the defender took Isak’s return pass and hit a deflected cross that looped over Sels for Murphy to bundle home from virtually on the goal-line.

Newcastle were firing on all cylinders and they struck again in the 33rd minute. Ola Aina used his arm to block Hall’s cross, conceding a penalty that Isak dispatched past Sels with an audacious lofted effort that left the keeper sprawled on his back as he tried in vain to claw it out.

Forest had no answer to Newcastle’s intensity and it was no surprise when they conceded a fourth just 60 seconds later.

Joe Willock raced unchecked through the Forest midfield and slipped his pass to Isak, whose shot from 12 yards took a deflection on its way past the wrong-footed Sels.

Newcastle eased up in the second half and Milenkovic reduced the deficit in the 63rd minute, flicking Chris Wood’s cross past Pope from close-range.

When Yates steered home in the 90th minute, a nervous hush descended on St James’ Park, but Newcastle held on by their fingernails.

‘Very, very angry’: Arsenal coach fumes after title bid rocked; Man Utd rally amid late drama — EPL Wrap

Mikel Arteta has slammed Arsenal for being ‘nowhere near the levels’ required to win the Premier League following his side’s 1-0 loss to West Ham.

Meanwhile troubled Manchester United rallied from two goals down in a 2-2 draw at Everton.

Jarrod Bowen’s strike just before half-time at the Emirates proved to be the difference as the Gunners dropped to their third defeat of the season with their 15-game unbeaten streak coming to an end.

A red card to Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 73rd minute did little to help Arsenal’s cause as they missed out on the chance to cut Liverpool’s lead at the top to five points.

And Arteta was left bitterly frustrated as Arsenal created next to nothing as they lost at home to the Hammers for the second successive season.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “Very disappointed, obviously very angry as well.

“We didn’t hit the levels of today and I am very much responsible of that so I am very, very angry.” Arteta also refused to use the lack of attackers at his disposal as an excuse for his side’s toothless display up front.

Mikel Merino, a central midfielder, was named up top for the Gunners with Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri on the flanks.

In total, Arsenal took 20 shots, but just two of those landed on target. Yet Arteta bemoaned a lack of quality from his entire squad as the primary reason for the defeat.

“I refuse that completely because I am talking about the standards of the players and the team that we played today, me included,” he remarked.

“That was nowhere near the levels that we have to hit to have the opportunity to win a Premier League.

Match Stats “We were very consistent, yes, but football is about what you do today and today, nowhere near.” The loss to West Ham now leaves the Gunners’ title hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads.

With Liverpool drawing to Everton and Aston Villa recently, Arsenal had the chance to keep the pressure on Arne Slot‘s men.

But the loss to West Ham leaves the margin at eight points with 12 games remaining ahead of Liverpool’s clash away at Manchester City on Sunday.

“I think you have to congratulate West Ham for the victory and the game that they played,” Arteta added.

“But as well I think a lot from our side that we never got right and they didn’t allow us to get enough momentum, enough sequence of play with positive action that could deliver into situations of threat for them.” Arteta and his troops must now quickly switch focus to Wednesday’s trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest.

He will also be without Lewis-Skelly as one of his defensive options. The teenager brought down Mohamed Kudus as the Ghanaian looked to break towards goal with no defensive cover nearby.

It was initially given a yellow card, but following a VAR review, it was upgraded to a straight red.

Wild Melbourne derby ends in draw | 01:49

Lewis-Skelly’s sending off was his second in his last four league fixtures, with the other coming in a 1-0 win over Wolves. However, it was later overturned upon appeal.

At Goodison Park, United were headed for a ninth defeat in their last 13 league games as goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton two up inside 33 minutes.

Ruben Amorim’s team had not mustered a shot on target until Fernandes’ free-kick pulled a goal back 18 minutes from time before Manuel Ugarte’s equaliser salvaged a point.

More late drama was to come as Everton were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage-time, only for referee Andy Madley to overturn his decision after a VAR review.

“We just played one half and we managed to draw the game. We didn’t exist in the first half,” Amorim said after his 15th-placed side’s dismal run extended to just four wins in 15 league games.

    SPURS BACK ON TRACK

Tottenham eased the pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou with a 4-1 win at third-bottom Ipswich.

Brennan Johnson put Tottenham ahead in the 18th minute with a tap-in from Son Heung-min’s cutback.

Johnson was on target again eight minutes later, netting with a clinical strike from another Son assist.

Omari Hutchinson pulled one back for Ipswich in the 36th minute. But Djed Spence’s deflected 77th minute shot and Dejan Kulusevski’s 84th minute finish wrapped up Tottenham’s second successive victory.

Wolves boosted their survival bid with a priceless 1-0 win at 10-man Bournemouth.

Bournemouth had Illia Zabarnyi sent off late in the first half when his foul by Rayan Ait-Nouri was upgraded from a yellow to red card after VAR intervened.

Nunez shocker leaves coach breathless | 00:25

Wolves took advantage in the 36th minute as Nelson Semedo’s cross was missed by Dean Huijsen and Matheus Cunha steered his shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Vitor Pereira’s team are now five points clear of the relegation zone as fifth-placed Bournemouth’s top four hopes suffered a setback.

Joachim Andersen’s own goal put his former club Crystal Palace on course for a 2-0 win at Fulham.

Daniel Munoz’s 66th minute blast wrapped up Palace’s latest success on the road. Southampton slipped closer to relegation after a 4-0 defeat against south-coast rivals Brighton at St Mary’s.

Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood’s 82nd minute effort condemned bottom of the table Southampton to a 21st defeat in 26 league games this season.

Southampton are 13 points from safety with 12 games left to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Chelsea travel to Aston Villa looking to bolster their top four push in Saturday’s late game.

‘HUGE STEP BACK’ FOR FOXES IN HISTORIC LOW

Leicester’s bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League hit a historic low as Brentford cruised to a 4-0 win at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side would have moved out of the relegation zone with a victory, but instead they remain two points from safety.

Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard all scored for Brentford in a wretched first half for second-bottom Leicester.

Fabio Carvalho netted in the closing stages and the Foxes were booed off after a 10th defeat in their last 11 league games that added to the pressure on the under-fire Van Nistelrooy.

Underlining the depth of their struggles, Leicester made unwanted history as the first ever team in the English top-flight to lose six successive home games without scoring in any of them.

“You have to acknowledge it’s a huge step back. There was hope after recent performances, the beginning of the game was hopeful with three chances,” Van Nistelrooy said.

“After the bright start we were never in the game again and at half-time the game was done. Everyone is going home gutted with the loss and disappointed with the levels we showed.” With just 12 games left to avoid relegation, Leicester are in severe danger of an immediate return to the Championship.

Enzo Maresca quit to take charge of Chelsea after masterminding Leicester’s promotion last season and the club’s Thai owners have failed to find an adequate replacement for the Italian.

Steve Cooper was sacked after just five months in charge and former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy has fared no better.

Leicester have won just four of their 26 league games this season, with Van Nistelrooy contributing only two of those victories in 15 matches.

MOYES ‘DOING A BETTER JOB’ THAN UNITED BOSS

Ruben Amorim admits David Moyes is doing a better job reviving Everton than the under-fire Manchester United boss has been able to achieve in his short spell at Old Trafford.

Amorim will go head-to-head with Everton boss Moyes on Sunday as he looks to drag United out of their shocking decline.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss has overseen just four wins and eight defeats in the Premier League since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

Moyes, who was sacked by United in 2014 after less than a season in charge, has already matched Amorim’s win total in just six league games since returning to Everton in January.

Everton, in 14th place, are above 15th-placed United in the table ahead of the clubs’ final ever meeting at Goodison Park before the Toffees move to a new stadium next season.

Asked why Everton improved their fortunes with a new boss unlike United, Amorim said: “Simple thing. David Moyes is doing a better job than me. It’s quite simple.

“And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, that belief. The pressure is also not the same.

“I don’t know but I think we have to give merit to the players of Everton and especially to the coach of Everton and that’s all. We need to do the same.” It was a candid admission from Amorim, who has previously acknowledged that Ten Hag and United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, now in charge at Leicester, did better than him at Old Trafford this season.

Moyes was sacked by United after just 10 months in charge following a 2-0 loss at Everton and a defeat this weekend would increase the pressure on Amorim, whose approach has reportedly left some players unconvinced.

“I don’t feel it in training,” Amorim said. “If you watch our games sometimes you can have that sensation, but I’m not worried about that.

“If they are not convinced, I don’t feel that. It’s my job to change their minds and I’m quite good on that.” Amorim insists he has no regrets taking a job he had initially preferred to wait for until the summer, allowing him to finish the campaign with Sporting and start afresh.

“I think that is clear, it’s common sense, when you start a season it’s completely different,” he said.

“You have time to think things, to feel the players, to have pre-season, to change things that you feel are necessary in a team, in a squad. That is clear.

“That was the choice, so I don’t want to talk like that. I had my reasons to ask for that and I have the most important reasons to accept the job.

“I knew it will be tough and the risk. I know that but it’s Manchester United and you cannot say no.” Asked if he ever questioned whether it was the right decision to join United, he said: “No. We make a decision and then we go all the way. Of course, sometimes it’s really frustrating.”

‘Need to keep backing it up’: Ange smells Spurs ‘opportunity’ amid PL streak, eased relegation fears

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou wants his side to build on back-to-back Premier League wins as Spurs’ injury crisis begins to ease.

Victories over Brentford and Manchester United have lifted Postecoglou’s men to 12th in the table and eased any fears of being drawn into a relegation battle.

Prior to that, Spurs had won just once in 11 league games to tumble down the table as injuries piled up.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and match-winner James Maddison returned to the starting line-up against United last weekend, while Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Destiny Udogie made the bench.

Centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero could return in time to face AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 of the Europa League next month.

Before then Postecoglou is keen to make more inroads into improving Spurs’ league position in games against Ipswich on Sunday before Manchester City visit north London on Thursday.

“Obviously our last two Premier League games, Brentford away and Man United at home, have been two important results for us to kind of try and arrest the form in the league,” Postecoglou told reporters. “But you need to keep backing that up.

“Tomorrow’s an opportunity to do that. It’s not easy when you’re playing away from home and in the Premier League, especially against a team that’s fighting like Ipswich are.

“But it is an opportunity for us now to get another strong performance, get another positive result, and like I said, hopefully provide a bit of a foundation for us to kick on.”

The former Australia boss hinted that the likes of Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski could be rested for the trip to Portman Road after being loaded with a heavy burden during Tottenham’s injury crisis in recent months.

“Once Europe kicks in, we know we’ve got to play midweek and weekend again, so we want to make sure we’ve got enough in the tank and we don’t want to lose any players during this period either,” added Postecoglou.

“Pedro, Kulusevski, these kind of guys, we’ve got an opportunity with the players we’ve got back to still maintain good levels of performance, but also give them a little bit of a rest.”

Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth battling the powerhouses for a Champions League place. No one predicted that.

There is only a third of the Premier League season remaining and the race for the top four has arguably never been more intriguing.

Liverpool appears set to have one hand on the title, eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand, but the next rung down is where things get fascinating.

Nottingham Forest third, Manchester City fourth and Bournemouth fifth.

The latter jumped into the top five after Forest, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle all dropped points last weekend.

Forest have won 14, drawn five and lost six, while Bournemouth have won 12, drawn seven and lost six.

It reads like a Forest or Cherries fan plugging away on Football Manager for hours to get their team to dizzying heights, but supporters in England’s midlands and on the south coast better stop pinching themselves.

They are not dreaming. This is real.

The struggles of regular top six clubs Manchester United and Tottenham, along with Champions League Round of 16 bound Villa slipping in the league, presented opportunities, and Forest and Bournemouth have snatched them with both hands.

    The Forest story is famous.

A powerhouse decades ago with back-to-back European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980 under legendary manager Brian Clough.

A year before their first continental breakthrough, Forest won the English top flight and they were runners-up the season after.

But following relegation from the Premier League in 1999, they fell into the football abyss.

Forest did not return to the Premier League until 2022 and barely avoided relegation by finishing 16th and 17th in their first two seasons back in the top tier.

Bournemouth were promoted from the Championship in the same season as Forest and initially found themselves in the bottom half of the table too.

A 12th place finish last season was preceded by coming 15th in their prior campaign.

Unlike Forest, however, Bournemouth is not a club with a rich pedigree.

Its first season in the Premier League came under now Newcastle boss Eddie Howe in 2015/16 and a ninth-place finish in their second season was the club’s best result in the top flight.

Years of mediocrity did not show too many hints of a breakout campaign in Bournemouth’s case, nor a stunning revival in Forest’s case.

But the dream of Champions League nights at the City Ground or the Vitality Stadium is alive and well, and this how they have put themselves in the hunt for midweek action against the best clubs in Europe.

Here is how they did it.

    FOREST’S KIWI FRONTMAN

Like Forest’s, Chris Wood’s story is a fairytale.

The 33-year-old captain of the New Zealand national team has remarkably played for 12 different clubs in England.

He even went through a three-year period where he was sent out on loan six times by West Bromwich Albion.

Wood bounced around the various tiers of English football after moving to the UK as a 16-year-old to chase his dreams, and now the Forest talisman is a bonified star.

The six-foot three striker is third in the golden boot race.

He has netted 18 goals so far this campaign, highlighted by a hat-trick in Forest’s 7-0 rout of Brighton earlier this month, to only sit behind Mohamed Salah (24) and Erling Haaland (19).

It is his best Premier League season, and he still has 13 more opportunities to add to his tally.

“When they talk about Mo Salah and Erling Haaland – they mention Chris Wood in the same breath – you can’t compete with that,” Wood’s high school coach former New Zealand international Mike Groom told Sky Sports.

“It’s theatrical, it’s magical, it’s the stuff of dreams and kids’ dreams are fuelled by those images and that exposure.

“We’re still a rugby-playing country, but Chris is single-handedly beginning to change that.”

Wood’s height automatically makes him an aerial threat as a target man, he has scored six headed goals this season, the most in the league, but his finishing is still underrated.

    In fact, it is lethal.

Wood has had 28 shots on target for the season, and scoring 18 of them makes him the most effective of any of the Premier League’s top strikers in front of goal.

New Zealand’s record goal scorer, who is also nearing the record for most appearances for his country, has also endeared himself to football fans because he is not blessed with all the attributes of the likes of Salah and Haaland.

    The biggest difference is pace.

Wood is not a quick player, and the fact he lacks speed seemingly contradicts the fact that Forest prefers to play counterattacking football.

But he makes it work by timing his runs perfectly and seizing big moments.

In some ways, it makes little sense but so has his entire football journey.

“It’s definitely exceeded what I dreamt of when I was a kid and hopefully, I’ve got a lot more I can achieve to make it an even better dream,” Wood told Sky Sports.

“I want to keep the path open for New Zealanders to hopefully make it into the Premier League one day – I want to grow that generation of new kids wanting to play football and wanting to dream of doing the best they can and ending up in the biggest league.”

    BOURNEMOUTH CREATE CHAOS

Bournemouth’s blueprint in attack is not dissimilar to Forest’s.

The two sides are comfortably the Premier League leaders for playing fast and direct football.

They sit back and defend resolutely, and when they win the ball back, they are off to the races.

Once the ball is in their attacking half, they press high and try to force turnovers in dangerous areas.

It makes for exciting games to watch, and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been heaped with praise this season for his tactics.

“I sometimes value much more a player carrying the ball and forcing things to happen,” Iraola said in an interview with The Independent.

“We have to prepare [positional] patterns, but we cannot just prioritise them. If you can see that you don’t have a teammate ahead, forget about the pattern, just drive the ball and try to force things to happen. I want him to attack first.”

Meanwhile premierleague.com’s Alex Keble summed up the essence of their play as “disruption”.

“High risk, high reward: that’s the mentality of Iraola and his team, whether in hounding the ball with an all-action and full-pitch press or piercing opposition lines with sharp vertical football and attacking overloads,” Keble said.

“Perhaps the best word to encapsulate their tactical approach is “disruption”.

“Disrupt the other team’s play with furious pressing, and disrupt the expected rhythms of your own attack with improvisations and surges forward in high numbers.”

That philosophy has brought out the best in Justin Kluivert, who has scored 11 goals so far this campaign, four more than last season.

The Dutchman has really found his groove in the Premier League in recent times.

He was player of the month in January for scoring five goals and recording two assists in four appearances, of which Bournemouth won three and drew one.

The highlight of his season so far was a hat-trick, and an assist, in a 4-1 away win against Newcastle who were previously unbeaten in nine matches before that January fixture.

That victory was followed up by a 5-0 victory against Forest, where Kluivert contributed a goal and an assist to help end Forest’s eight-game unbeaten run.

Knocking off several in-form teams led to Iraola taking home manager of the month, and David Brooks’ stunning volley against Everton made it a clean sweep of the awards by winning goal of the month.

All of that came amid a length injury list, including strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal.

But Kluivert’s breakout combined with the superb form of fellow attackers Dango Ouattara and Antoine Semenyo, who have scored seven goals apiece this season, has prevented injuries from being an excuse.

No matter who is on the sidelines, once Bournemouth wins the ball back there are simply too many runners for opponents to attack.

Remarkably, one would expect such a style of play to make them vulnerable at the back.

But Iraola’s side do not play a high line, and they have the equal-third best defensive record in the league, alongside Forest, conceding 29 goals so far. Only Arsenal and Liverpool have been stingier at the back.

They key has been the centre back pairing of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi, a combination Iraola landed on during the season.

In the 13 games they have started together, Bournemouth have lost once, to Liverpool.

Zabaryni is the rock that has played every minute this season, while 19-year-old Huijsen has been a revelation.

“Huijsen is undoubtedly the star of the two,” Keble wrote.

“Signed from Juventus for around £15 million last summer, his strength in the air, composure in possession, and – crucially – assertive front-foot style have catapulted Bournemouth to new heights.”

    FOREST’S ELITE DEFENCE

ESPN’s Bruce Schoenfeld summed up Forest’s defensive brilliance in writing that manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s “football has hardly changed even though instead of a relegation battle, he has European qualification in his sights”.

Forest defends like their life depends on it.

They have comfortably made more clearances than any other team, including the equal most amount of clearances off the line.

They are level with Liverpool for the most number of clean sheets with ten.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels has punched away the aerial more than anyone else.

    They are desperate.

And they are bringing an enormous amount of pride to the club’s greats.

“I haven’t watched a better pairing at the back than Murillo and Nikola Milenkovic in my 50 years of watching Forest,” former England and Forest midfielder Steve Hodge said on BBC Radio last month.

“I really mean that – pound for pound what they are as footballers and as a pair,” he added. “They have everything. As a pair, they complement each other perfectly and they both seem to be calm characters even under severe pressure.”

Nikola Milenkovic of Nottingham Forest celebrates victory during the Premier League match between Nottingham Forest and Brighton and Hove Albion at the City Ground in Nottingham, England, on February 1, 2025. (Photo by MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

Milenkovic joined from Fiorentina last summer and the 31-year-old Serbian is in many pundits’ team of the season so far.

He is an old-fashioned, no-nonsense centre back whose heading ability has led to him scoring two goals as well as clearing many attacking threats.

But in the coming games, Forest face arguably the biggest defensive test of the season.

Away at Newcastle, home to Arsenal and home to Manchester City are their next three league games.

They passed with flying colours earlier in the season, defeating Liverpool at Anfield and taking a point from them at home.

That shows that there is little to doubt that Forest’s steeliness will remain.

    BOURNEMOUTH’S EXCELLENT ROAD RECORD

A major part of Bournemouth’s success has been their impressive away record.

The Cherries have won six, drawn four and lost three of their matches on the road this season, including going unbeaten in their last seven away games.

That streak has included a pair of 2-2 draws against rivals for the European places Chelsea and Fulham, as well as the Newcastle win mentioned earlier.

Their most recent away win was a 3-1 win against cellar dwellers Southampton in a south coast derby, and post-match Iraola identified fast starts as the reason for their away success.

“I think it’s key, especially when you play away,” he said.

“I think we are having good starts. I remember last games, Newcastle away, Everton the other day.

“Even the two goals in 16 minutes, but in the first minute I think we had two corners for us.

“It’s a good start and a message that we are coming here and we want to win this game and we are not happy with the 0-0 and we want things to happen quickly.

“Also, I think they are a team that now is aggressive in the press. I think there were spaces behind them. There were spaces behind us.

“The game could go very open and I’m happy, especially first half, I think we controlled the game very well.”

Their ability to get results on the road will be severely tested later in the season as they visit Arsenal and Manchester City in the final four games of their campaign.

They could be vital to their European hopes.

James Maddison scored the only goal on 13 minutes as Spurs moved above United in the table into 12th thanks to a third win over the Red Devils this season.

The Spurs midfielder delivered his trademark goal celebration before putting his fingers to his lips.

It appeared to be a response to stinging criticism from United legend Roy Keane who doubted Maddison’s return would do much to improve Spurs fortunes.

“People say, ‘Maddison’s the man’, but when is he going to step up to the plate? He got relegated with Leicester and [looks like] with Spurs. Maddison isn’t bad but if you think he’s going to come back and get Spurs top six, you’re in cuckoo land,” Keane said on the Stick to Football podcast this week.

“He’s a talented player, but if you’re a player in the Spurs dressing room and he’s back in the squad, you wouldn’t be looking and going, ‘James is back today – we’re going to be fine!’”

Speaking after the game Maddison hinted that his goal celebration may have been in response to Keane’s comments.

“It’s always difficult being out injured. You miss one game or 10, you are always champing at the bit to get back. I went into the game today knowing I can be the difference.

“I’m really proud of the boys, obviously it has been an up and down season, we are not where we want to be in the league table. I’m really happy for the lads and for the fans, we’re sending them home happy. I’ve always been a goalscoring midfielder.

“That’s why Spurs brought me to the club. I’m there to be that creative outlet and score goals. There was a little bit of outside noise this week. People will have their opinions. Nobody is more critical of me than myself.”

Victory eased the pressure on under-fire Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou after exiting both domestic cup competitions this month to go with their lowly league position.

EPL Wrap: Ange claims back-to-back wins | 02:53

United now find themselves down in 15th, but do enjoy a 12-point cushion over the bottom three.

Tottenham’s first home league win since November came amid a spirit of revolt among their support.

Before kick-off Spurs fans again vented their frustration towards owners ENIC and chairman Daniel Levy.

A huge banner read “24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy – Time for change” as a sizeable contingent of the home crowd joined a protest calling for Levy to go.

However, the mood for Postecoglou was lifted even before kick-off as he was able to welcome back a host of first-team regulars who have been sidelined by injury.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made his first appearance since November along with Maddison in the starting line-up, while Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert were on the bench.

United had their own injury troubles with Amad Diallo joining Lisandro Martinez on the sidelines for the rest of the season and Kobbie Mainoo ruled out for a month.

Amorim had to name eight teenagers among his nine substitutes, forcing Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee to start together up front after both were overlooked for United’s last league game, a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Hojlund had the first chance when he fired too close to Vicario before the Italian flew to his left to deny Alejandro Garnacho.

Instead it was Spurs who got the opener when Andre Onana could only parry Lucas Bergvall’s shot into the path of Maddison, who tapped into an empty net for his 10th goal of the season.

United should have been at least level by half-time as Garnacho blazed over a glorious opportunity with just Vicario to beat after being picked out by Bruno Fernandes.

Vicario continued to frustrate Garnacho with another fine save after the break. Zirkzee wasted a huge chance to equalise 20 minutes from time when the Dutch international headed Noussair Mazraoui’s cross wide with the goal gaping.

But United’s inability to put the ball in the net comes as little surprise. Only the bottom three plus Everton have scored fewer than United’s 28 goals in 25 league games this season.

At the other end, Onana kept the visitors in the game by parrying Dejan Kulusevski’s powerful effort.

But even Spurs’ makeshift backline could not be breached by Amorim’s men to allow Postecoglou to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

    – ‘This one is big’: Slot salutes Liverpool spirit in win over Wolves –

Arne Slot hailed Liverpool’s fighting spirit as the “fatigued” Premier League leaders survived a tense 2-1 win against Wolves on Sunday.

Slot’s side moved seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal thanks to Luis Diaz’s early opener and a Mohamed Salah penalty before the interval at Anfield.

It wasn’t easy for Liverpool despite that strong start as fourth-bottom Wolves hit back impressively.

Matheus Cunha’s blast reduced the deficit and Liverpool had to hold on in the closing stages before they could celebrate a first win in three games in all competitions.

Indebted to Alisson Becker for some crucial saves, Liverpool boss Slot said: “This one is big. We needed to fight and we needed Alisson.

“Wolves took a lot of risks. In a season where you want to achieve something, you need to have wins like this as well.

“It’s never the game-plan never to create anything at all. They got better and better, we got worse and worse.

“We had to show a different mentality and got it over the line. If this is what it takes to win a game then I’m happy the players could do that again.”

Slot admitted Liverpool were running on fumes at times after Wednesday’s emotionally draining 2-2 draw at Merseyside rivals Everton, which featured a stoppage-time equaliser for the Toffees, and last weekend’s embarrassing FA Cup exit at second tier Plymouth.

“Fatigue comes from running a lot and a bit of mental fatigue a lot. We were mentally tested today. We thought we’d scored a third and then a penalty for the third but both were correct from the referee,” he said.

“Maybe it did lead to us being a bit tired. I did see for the first time this season that players were more tired than they have been.

“If you want to achieve something it is not only about bringing the ball out from the back or Mo scoring goals, it is also about defending.”

    – ‘You can never breathe’ –

Liverpool’s ability to grind out a fourth win in their last five league matches kept Arsenal at bay in the title race.

Chasing a record-equalling 20th English title and their first since 2020, Liverpool are 13 games away from the trophy.

They face significant clashes with Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle in their next three league games.

And Slot knows Arsenal — who have finished runners-up for the last two seasons — will do everything they can to take the race to a dramatic conclusion.

“If you look at the last few seasons it has mostly been a battle between two teams. As things stand now it mostly looks like between us and Arsenal,” he said.

“You can never breathe in this competition. I saw Arsenal’s 15-game unbeaten run and the gap has always been the same so that shows that we do.

“If you want to compete for something special then you have to win a lot of games in this league.” Slot was able to sit on the bench against Wolves despite being charged with abusive behaviour towards the match officials after being sent off at the end of the stormy Merseyside derby.

The Dutchman could eventually face a suspension and he said: “It is an ongoing process, it is not smart to talk about it.

“We’ve seen the comments from the referee and now we can say our part. It’s down to a panel to decide if I get a ban.”

‘Welcome to my world’: Ange’s cold response as Man United’s great lashes ‘really poor team’

There was no way Ange Postecoglou was going to feel sympathetic for Ruben Amorim after Tottenham’s 1-0 win at home against Manchester United on Sunday.

After months of being pillaged by injury, Postecoglou welcomed back first-choice Guglielmo Vicario, who made his presence known with several key saves, and James Maddison, who scored the only goal of the game when he pounced on a rebound from Lucas Bergvall’s shot, to the starting line-up.

Almost as importantly, Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert returned to the list of substitutes, with the latter two coming on in the second half.

Tottenham started to look like the side who came agonisingly close to a Champions League berth last season again.

Meanwhile, Amorim had eight teenagers among United’s nine substitutes, and he only called upon one of them.

The sole change he made was bringing on 17-year-old striker Chido Obi for his debut with three minutes remaining as they tried to snatch a point.

It was a predicament Postecoglou knows all too well.

But the Australian was not in the mood to feel sorry for his rival manager as his side defeated United for the second time this Premier League season, becoming the first Spurs outfit to do the league double against the Red Devils, and for the third time in all competitions.

“If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers, so that hasn’t happened,” Postecoglou said.

“There’s definitely a few (injury issues). I could see Ruben there, players out of position, kids on the bench. Well, welcome to my world.

“But that’s for one game. Now do that for two months. Do that for two months. Any club. Do that for two months.

“I thought Man United were good today, considering all that, and we had our days when we were good, we beat Liverpool in this spell.”

The victory was Tottenham’s second straight in the league and lifted them to 12th on table, while United dropped to 15th, 12 points clear of the relegation places.

Amorim has officially had the worst start of any United manager since the great Sir Alex Ferguson with his side recording, four wins, two draws and eight losses in the league since the Portuguese manager took over.

The Red Devils have lost 12 of their 25 league games so far, and the last time they piled up that many losses was in 1973/74 when they were relegated from the top flight.

The former Sporting CP boss said post-match he has “a lot of problems” and that his “job is so, so hard here”.

But United great Gary Neville summed up how dire the situation is by saying on Sky Sports that the best part of Amorim’s tenure has been his work in front of the cameras.

“The best thing about it has been his press conferences, and I think even today after the game, the way in which he communicates his vision and his idea, and he wants to succeed at Manchester United, and he feels he’ll get it right,” Neville said.

“I don’t think there’s anything on the pitch that I’ve seen so far, either in results or performances, that tell me we’re watching a really good team.

“This is a really poor team, this United team.

“He has died in a ditch when he said very early on that I’m not going to change my ideas, and now he can’t, and I suppose that’s an issue in some ways.

“The concern is that the players aren’t demonstrating this system yet, in any of the 20 games Ruben Amorim’s had, apart from maybe Liverpool away.”

Like Tottenham, United are clinging to the hope of silverware in the Europa League despite their poor Premier League campaign.

Both teams gained automatic passage to the Round of 16 courtesy of finishing in the top eight of the league phase, but Neville believes things are trending upwardly only for Spurs as they emerge from their injury struggles.

Speaking on Sky Sports pre-match, he was full of praise for Postecoglou and even said he hoped the Australian wins the secondary European trophy, but with a caveat.

“He’s a massive asset to the Premier League,” Neville said of Postecoglou.

“I hope they can turn it around and do well in Europe as well.

“I’d like United to win the competition but if they didn’t I would want Spurs to win it as well.”

Post-match Neville again expressed his support for the former Celtic boss.

“I don’t buy into this that everyone wants Ange Postecoglou to be sacked, or to fail, because actually, I desperately don’t,” he said.

“I think he’s one of the best styles of play I’ve seen here for a long time.

“It’s brilliant how he’s got his team to play. They’re so exciting to watch. I love it when I get a Tottenham game given to me.

“Everyone wants him to succeed, but obviously results do have to improve.”
