‘Didn’t feel the same’: Wayne Bennett’s three questions to Arnie that sealed Socceroos decision

Former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has revealed how a conversation with rugby league mastercoach Wayne Bennett convinced him that his time in charge of the national side was over.

Arnold resigned last week after six years in charge.

Speaking on Fox Sports’ The Back Page Live on Tuesday night, the 61-year-old opened up on how he came to the decision that he was no longer the right man to lead the Socceroos to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Remarkably, it started with a phone call to Bennett — a long time friend — straight after the Socceroos lost 1-0 to Bahrain on the Gold Coast, and before the side drew to Indonesia in Jakarta a fortnight ago.

“I’ve got a great relationship with Wayne and I always have,” Arnold said. “I spoke to him straight after the Bahrain game, because I’ve been feeling this way not just for one-game, I’ve been feeling this way for a number of months.

“He just asked me three questions, and he made it very simple.

“The first question was; ‘when you wake up in the morning are you excited to go to meetings and on the training pitch?’ I said, ‘no’.

“‘When you look into the players eyes what do you see? You can see in the players’ eyes if they’re really switched on, if they’re focused’. I said ‘no, I don’t think they are’.

“The last thing he said to me was; if you had a lemon and you squeezed the lemon, is there any juice left in it? I said, ‘no’.

“He said, you’ve answered your own questions and all the best.”

Arnold returned home from Indonesia, and after a conversation with Football Australia CEO James Johnson, tendered his resignation.

“Everyone thinks it was a difficult decision, but it was quite easy,” he said.

“I always put the nation first, the team first, and myself last, and I just felt that probably ever since the loss in the Asian Cup, I haven’t felt the same.

“The stomach was telling me, the gut was telling me, it was time to leave.

Popovic confirmed as new Socceroos coach | 02:27

“I feel great. I have no regrets at all.”

Football Australia moved swiftly to replace Arnold and just days later appointed Tony Popovic.

Popovic, capped 58 times by the Socceroos, had moved his family to Croatia after deciding not to renew his contract with Melbourne Victory for the looming A-League men’s season.

When asked if he was surprised at how quickly he had been replaced, Arnold ducked the question.

“I’m here to do The Back Page, I don’t want to end up on the front page.”

Popovic faces a tough task to turn the tide in this qualifying campaign.

The Aussies sit fifth in a six team group after two games during the third round. The top two ranked teams in the group will earn automatic qualification for the expanded 48-team World Cup. The third and fourth ranked sides fight on to the fourth round, where two more automatic spots are up for grabs.

There is a final chance to qualify as well in the fifth round, but Popovic and everyone at Football Australia will be hoping to avoid that drama-charged path.

“They’re two games into the third phase, they’ve still got eight games to go, and I felt that probably if I did stay on, maybe things wouldn’t go the way I wanted them to,” Arnold said.

“When you doubt yourself, that’s when you’ve got to get out, and maybe the players were feeling that a bit.

“I expect Tony to do a great job and they’ll qualify direct for the World Cup.”

As for what the future holds for Arnold? He openly admits that football in Australia has worn him out. It’s clear his next challenge, will be overseas.

“I’d like to go on a new journey.”

‘Snipers in the bushes’: PL legend lifts lid on bonkers golf experience with Donald Trump

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has lifted the lid on his bizarre experience of playing golf with former United States President Donald Trump.

The encounter took place at the Trump National Golf Club while Rooney was with Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit D.C. United.

During an interview with his former Red Devils teammate Gary Neville on The Overlap, Rooney revealed what prompted Trump, who was President at the time, to reach out.

“It was when he asked me to give his son (Barron) football lessons,” Rooney said.

“And (Barron) said ‘Do you want to see my dad?’

He took me up into the Oval Office and then from there, his PA (personal assistant) was just texting — ’do you want to play a few holes (of golf?)’”

Per The Athletic, Barron was a member of a D.C. United academy team and had previously been snapped kicking a ball around in the White House with an Arsenal jersey on.

Rooney took up the invite for a round alongside Trump, but he couldn’t have predicted a single thing about what was to unfold during his time on the fairways as he was joined by the former President’s lawyer at the time, Rudy Giuliani.

“The maddest thing about it was we had Giuliani in the buggy (golf cart) behind us,” Rooney said.

“Then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security.

“There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like ‘What’s going on here?!’”

Rooney made 48 appearances and scored 23 goals during his time as a player with D.C. United before he returned to the club as coach in July 2022.

However, he lasted just 53 games in charge before a mutual parting of ways in October 2023 as Rooney was poached by Birmingham City but lasted less than three months in his gig with the Blues.

Rooney hasn’t had to wait long for a new gig though having been appointed Plymouth Argyle’s new manager on May 25.

‘Do it my way’: Ange’s ultimatum in first press Spurs conference as Aussie lifts lid on Kane talks

KANE SAGA RUMBLES ON AS EURO GIANTS TEMPTED TO LODGE THIRD BID

It’s set to be the most dominating transfer saga of the summer.

German giants Bayern Munich have already had two bids for Harry Kane turned down by Spurs, but according to ESPN, they are set to come back knocking with a third.

The report claims Kane is “keen to join” Bayern and it is this willingness that looks likely to lead the German club to lodge a third bid.

The England superstar has also reportedly met with Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel and was “attracted to the idea” of constant glory in Germany.

Kane will be out of contract next summer at Tottenham and has so far refused to extend his deal.

Spurs boss Postecoglou is yet to meet with Kane and has not given any reassurances regarding the star striker’s future, but plans to speak with him when he returns from holiday.

A chat with the Aussie boss could prove pivotal in deciding his future.

SPURS HANDED BIG BOOST AS PL RIVAL PULLS OUT OF RACE FOR DUTCH STAR

At the other end of the pitch for Spurs, Postecoglou is reportedly edging closer to bolstering his defence thanks to a Premier League rival withdrawing from the race.

According to the Liverpool ECHO, Liverpool have scrapped their plans to push for Wolfsburg defender Micky Van de Ven, paving the way for Tottenham to swoop.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had been linked with a move for the Dutchman, but the Reds boss has since met with his transfer committee and decided Van de Ven was no longer worth pursuing.

With Liverpool now out of the running, Postecoglou and Spurs have a clear running at the Wolfsburg star, who is reportedly valued at $AUD48 million.

Van de Ven is one of multiple centre-backs linked with moves to Tottenham, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet.

RED DEVILS ‘EDGING CLOSER’ TO DE GEA REPLACEMENT

Manchester United are wasting little time in securing David De Gea’s replacement as Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag looks to reunite with a former Ajax star.

Sky Sports reports United are “edging closer to an agreement” for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as the two clubs reach a compromise for a transfer fee.

The Premier League outfit’s opening bid of $74 million was rejected as Inter stuck to their $98 million valuation, but the two look certain to find a happy resolution for all.

De Gea departed the club after failing to agree terms on a new deal and is yet to find a new club of his own.

Onana moved to Inter only a year ago on a five-year deal in a free transfer from Ajax and made 41 appearances in all competitions for the Italian giants.

BRIGHTON ACE ‘CANT SAY NO’ TO PL GIANTS AS BIDDING WAR LOOMS

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has made no secret of his desire to move to Chelsea, claiming it’s a team he “can’t say no” to if they came knocking.

Caicedo was the subject of heavy interest from Arsenal in the January window but Brighton opted to reject the Gunners’ bids as they eventually secured Europa League qualification.

But the Ecuadorean now looks likely to head to a different London club and reaffirmed his ambition to play for Chelsea in an interview.

“It’s (Chelsea) a big team, that’s true,” Caicedo told TC Deportes’ Maria Jose Flores.

“A very historic team which I can’t say no [to joining] because it’s a very big, history, beautiful team.

“The city as well is beautiful. It’s got everything beautiful.”

But according to Sky Sports, Caicedo will not come cheap.

Having seen West Ham midfielder Declan Rice all but move to Arsenal in a deal just over £100 million, Brighton will reportedly hold out for a similar figure if they are to let Caicedo leave.
