Henderson accepts Saudi riches after ‘completing the set’ following Fergie rejection

Not much is left from Liverpool’s relatively terrible pre-Jurgen Klopp period, and Jordan Henderson has now made it a distant memory.

The last remnant in the squad from the Brendan Rodgers and Sir Kenny Dalglish periods, Henderson spanned three managers and 117 different teammates, only to leave early at the age of 33.

In a now rather awkwardly-named club documentary ‘Jordan Henderson is Never Done’ the midfielder’s teammates and manager praised the leadership of a captain that won it all.

Now though, thanks to the riches of Saudi Arabia and Al Ettifaq FC, Henderson is done far earlier than expected, stepping away from top level football at a club he helped return there.

Arriving in 2011 from boyhood side Sunderland, Henderson showed plenty of grit as an energetic right winger doing laps up and down the wing, but not much more. Eventually, he matured into the spirit of Klopp’s Liverpool team

His pathway was never straightforward, though, having to grow up in the shadow of Reds legend Steven Gerrard – who will be his new manager in the Middle East – and taking his captain’s armband in 2015.

Fabinho could follow Liverpool teammate out of Anfield as Saudi giants eye up £40m deal

He eventually did what Gerrard never could and lifted the Premier League title in 2020, a year on from taking the Champions League and sobbing uncontrollably at the scale of the achievement in Madrid.

A tattoo of the European Cup accompanied his success, as did the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, and in 2021/22 he completed the set.

Winning the FA Cup against Chelsea, Henderson lifted all seven trophies on offer as Reds captain, and forever cemented his name in not just Liverpool’s, but football’s history books.

And that all came despite an unusual running style putting a black mark next to his name for Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary Manchester United manager recalled in 2021: “We were ready to make a bid for Jordan Henderson at Sunderland. I spoke to Steve Bruce and he loved the guy,

“And then our medical department said they were not happy with his running style – he could be the type to have injuries.

“I must say it was one of my bits of management to make sure the player is always available. If you sign a player and he is not available for you, it is a waste of time so that is the point I have to make about Jordan.

“We loved him as a player and he has proved that now, he has been fantastic and all the stories I am being told, it tells me I missed out on a really good person.”

Being a good person was part of Henderson’s leadership qualities that marked him out from the rest, as he was known for picking up new signings who were yet to even speak English, taking them to training to help with integration.

During the COVID-19 pandemic he was credited with setting up the ‘Players Together’ intuitive among Premier League captains, encouraging players to donate wages to the NHS while politicians attempted to use footballers’ salaries as an easy deflection tactic.

The act earned him an MBE for his services to charity, and plaudits across the world of football, as even the biggest detractors of his footballing ability could no longer argue that he wasn’t an exceptional leader on the pitch, but off it too.

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he showed his continued support for those who have come under persecution, giving his support to a member of the LGBTQ+ community on social media, and he also expressed his admiration for the Rainbow Laces campaign.

A year earlier In 2021 he said: “Before I’m a footballer, I’m a parent, a husband, a son, a brother and a friend to the people in my life who matter so much to me.

“The idea that any of them would feel excluded from playing or attending a football match, simply for being and identifying as who they are, blows my mind.

Henderson’s move to Saudi would be a huge blow to the LGBTQ+ community he professes to support

“The idea they’d have to hide from it to be accepted? But that’s exactly how too many members of the LGBT+ community feel.

“We know this because they tell us. So we should listen, support them and work to make it better.”

Now, though, Henderson is to play his trade in a country in Saudi Arabia where sentences for homosexual acts include the death penalty.

Liverpool’s official LGBTQ+ fan group Kops Out have expressed their fear over the move saying that they hope Henderson, ‘proves to be a man of his word and stays true to the values of our club, which so far he has been an absolute embodiment of’.

A farewell video from the midfielder attempted to highlight his highs at Anfield, but it was largely flooded by comments from those despairing at money over morals.

And with a £700,000-per-week salary signed-off on, it appears even the best can be turned, and that if they weren’t already, the floodgates for Saudi’s football takeover are well and truly open.

Jurgen Klopp breaks silence on ‘honour’ of German national team rumours

Jurgen Klopp has finally discussed rumours linking him with the German national team job.

The Liverpool manager has had his name repeatedly put alongside the role as current incumbent Hansi Flick continues to struggle with just four wins in his last 16 games.

The pressure is cranking up on former treble-winning Bayern Munich head coach Flick, with Germany hosting Euro 2024 next summer and looking completely out-of-sorts.

So favoured is Klopp by fans in Germany, that there has even been talk of the Reds boss managing the national team just for the tournament while remaining as Liverpool manager.

Klopp has now dismissed the idea of taking over part-time while speaking in his hometown of Stuttgart, and admitted he hasn’t been approached.

“The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty,” he said.

“I can’t just leave Liverpool now and say I’ll take over Germany for a moment. That does not work. And the request isn’t even there.”

Klopp’s current deal with Liverpool lasts until 2026, but he clearly sees himself as Germany manager at some point in the future.

“The job of national coach is and would be a great honour – there’s no question about that,” he told a panel in Baden-Wurttemberg.

“If I’m supposed to do it at some point, then I have to be available. And that’s just not me at the moment.”

Despite his comments, links with the role likely won’t go anywhere soon, with 2014 World Cup-winner and former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski saying Klopp is the only man capable of providing the necessary magic Germany need next summer.

Speaking to BILD, Podolski said: “He’s the only one I see who can pull something out again.”

And fans agree, as the popular website ran a poll of who should manage Germany next summer, and Klopp took 49 per cent of the vote, with Julian Nagelsmann second on just 16 per cent.

The number might come with some pressure, just ask Naby Keita, but Szoboszlai has said why it was important to him.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after his signing, he revealed: “I have a tattoo from Steven Gerrard. That was a reason why.

“When I was a child, to be honest I didn’t watch that much football, but when it was Champions League, I watched and he was one of the biggest.”

According to an interview with index.hu in his home country, the tattoo is a quote from Gerrard which reads in Hungarian: “Talent is a blessing from God, but without incredible will and humility, it is worthless.”

The 22-year-old’s revelation would have thrilled plenty of fans, and he further garnered their love with some comments about Anfield.

Having previously played there with RB Salzburg in the Champions League during the 2019/20 season, the midfielder has now explained his rare feelings before his side lost 4-3.

“This time made me feel bad because we lost 4-3! But of course, I’ve said it before, I’ve almost never been nervous before the game, I think this was the first time in my life,” he said.

“Of course the stadium, the fans were unbelievable even [though] they were against us [Salzburg]. And we will see how it is when they are with me.

Mohamed Salah delivered a brutal assessment of Liverpool’s failure to make the Champions League, but had support from one famous fan.

The Reds will be without Europe’s top tier competition to contest for the first time in seven years, and Salah summed up the blow in an unexpected social media post.

“I’m totally devastated,” he wrote to his 18 million Twitter followers. “There’s absolutely no excuse for this.

“We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum.

“I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”

The post was accompanied with a black and white picture of Liverpool’s all-time top European goalscorer, who won the Champions League with the Reds in 2019.

Salah has been supreme in the competition, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to a further two finals, and he has a personal record of 44 goals in 79 games.

The Egyptian and his teammates had probably started dreaming of a top four finish as they strung together seven Premier League wins while United and Newcastle faltered.

But with a draw against Aston Villa last time out, the race was all-but over before their rivals added the final nails to the coffin.

It was a rare statement from Liverpool’s talisman, but he had some support from one of his most famous fans, YouTuber turned boxer, Jake Paul.

Jorg Schmadtke not out to make friends with coaches but CV shows Liverpool have an expert

Liverpool fans may be surprised to hear Jorg Schamdtke will be the club’s new sporting director, particularly given he retired in January.

But his decision to reverse that and return with Liverpool looks to be a formality, with the 59-year-old German heading to Merseyside to put pen to paper on a short-term deal.

    5

It’s been a turbulent period at management level for the Reds, with the master of much of their transfer brilliance, Michael Edwards, making way for Julian Ward, who is now leaving after a single season as sporting director.

It can’t be much fun replacing a man who secured Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, and also brought in an era-defining £137million for Philippe Coutinho, but that will be the task for Schmadtke.

Klopp described the former goalkeeper as a ‘very successful and smart guy’ and it’s easy to see why with a CV of restoration jobs.

Beginning his career by taking Alemannia Aachen – a second division team – to the final of the DFB Pokal and with it the UEFA Cup in 2004, there was no surprise that Hannover 96 wanted him to provide a similar turnaround, which he managed to do.

Germany’s ‘crisis club’ were taken from the relegation zone to the Europa League, a feat Shmadtke has since repeated with Cologne, but starting from the second tier.

A tie against Arsenal at the Emirates was the peak of success for the new generation of fans of the Rheinland giants, who let their sporting director know how they felt when he departed for what they believed to be the riches of Volkswagen money at Wolfsburg.

His first match back at the fierce RheinEnergieSTADION earned chants of “Schmadtke, you scammer, take three million and leave,” but they were quickly proved wrong.

He went even further with Wolfsburg, going from the relegation zone to the Champions League, but the task will be very different at Liverpool as Schmadtke reverses his decision to retire in January.

The German is as competitive on the touchline as Klopp

Particularly with a manager in Klopp who’s been at Anfield since 2015, a far longer leash than Schmadtke normally gives his head coaches.

“My job is more than making friends with coaches,” Schmadtke once said. “My job is to be successful.”

That was very much the case at his last and most successful job with Wolfsburg, where the team even looked like title challengers on occasion.

Much of that was due to the hiring of Oliver Glasner from LASK in Austria, with the Tottenham-linked boss going on to win the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, when disagreements came over transfer activity, Glasner was dismissed, which Schmadtke will argue wasn’t his fault, as the Austrian is making similar complaints in his current job in Frankfurt.

When asked about the fallout, Schmadtke replied: “The discussion that I discuss with coaches or am not on friendly terms with me after 20 years as a manager is getting on my nerves.

“I also find that disrespectful towards me.

Schmadtke ended up bidding a fond farewell to Wolfsburg

    5

“It is not a logical equation when there is harmony between management and coach and then there is success. Conversely, disharmony does not mean no success.”

Under his next appointment, Mark van Bommel, there was neither disharmony or success, though, with the Dutch former midfielder’s attritional football only lasting three months at the Volkswagen Arena.

Instead he turned to a Julian Nagelsmann of sorts with the up and coming young Florian Kohfeldt, but that almost resulted in relegation.

And when there was an attempt to deflect the blame heading into the current campaign, pundits and former players weren’t happy.

“I am sure that the crisis is not due to the coach,” said experienced Bundesliga manager Peter Neururer.

“It’s pretty clear what went wrong. It has to be how the team is put together and by whom.”

Klopp certainly won't be fired by Schmadtke

    5

Klopp certainly won’t be fired by SchmadtkeCredit: Getty

Former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel agreed, saying: “He blames his mistake on the coach [Van Bommel] and I don’t think that’s okay.

“If you get Mark van Bommel, you know what kind of football you’re going to get. Then you get Kohfeldt, who is a mix of Glasner and van Bommel. The team no longer knows what you actually want.

“What bothers me about it is that it is always said that Florian is not to blame, but the predecessor. But you got him. You got a coach who stood for a completely different type of football.”

Those problems won’t be so pronounced at Liverpool, where Schmadtke certainly won’t have the power to fire Klopp, in fact the opposite might be true.

Instead his last job may give some clues, with Schmadtke grooming his assistant Marcel Schafer to replace him at Wolfsburg, and the side are now back challenging for Europe.

Head of recruitment Dave Fallows was linked with the post Schmadtke is now taking, and with a short term contract to be signed, it may be the perfect solution to set the Reds up for a bright future.

Liverpool loanee scores critical goal for Schalke in first game after six-month injury

Liverpool loanee Sepp van den Berg had never scored a top flight goal before, but his first may be one of the most important of his career.

It was his first game since after a six-month injury

Bundesliga strugglers Schalke found themselves 1-0 down after conceding early, and with the two sides above them both avoiding defeat, things were looking bleak.

However, manager Thomas Reis took a slightly bizarre roll of the dice with 13 minutes to play, bringing on Liverpool’s Van den Berg with his team in desperate need of a goal.

The 21-year-old had only previously scored professionally in the second tier while on loan at Preston, but you wouldn’t have known as he rushed towards a clearance on the edge of the box.

Swinging his left foot at the ball, it hit the back of the net, and the lofty 6ft 4in defender reeled off in wild celebration.

Things got even better in stoppage time too, with Uruguayan Rodrigo Zalazar picking out Dominick Drexler with a sublime pass to win the match in stoppage time.

The three points provided a huge lifeline to the German giants, who could now manage to stave off a relegation that previously looked inevitable.

Klopp has admitted Liverpool can’t operate like other clubs

The England youngster had long been linked with the Reds, and looked like an ideal fit, but budget constraints and the need for an entire midfield rebuild have made the move impossible.

With Klopp’s troops in the middle of the park either ageing or injury-prone, the German will instead look to bring in two or three names according to reports, with Bellingham’s hefty £150million price tag unmanageable.

That’s not the case for many of their Premier League opponents, though, with Klopp admitting his club aren’t in the same position as many of their rivals.

“We cannot dream, we cannot be angry if we don’t get this or we don’t get that,” he said.

“It is clear other clubs can do in some situations more than us. I am the wrong person to ask about that, but that’s it.

“I am always here explaining it, and that is the bit that is not so cool to be honest. It is not my money we are talking about…

“You know how the process is, what you want to know is as I sit here, am I angry that we can’t do this or that? No, I am not. I don’t agree all the time with everything we do… but I am employed here. I am not here to be angry about things that will work out or not work out.

“If I am angry we don’t all of a sudden have more money or resources to do everything.”

Klopp was then pressed on the situation, and whether a lack of competitive funds would make him look elsewhere for employment.

“But this is my club,” he said. “This is my club. You want to suggest I quit here and wait for the next top job?”

“I’m too a much a professional. You are in this business, you make sure that’s what we can do, work with it. Done. That’s it, make the best of it. Go on the training ground.”

Klopp was also questioned on his beliefs whether Liverpool can compete for top honours again, and he had no doubts.

“Yes, we can become a team again that nobody wants to play against, and that is the starting basis,” he said.

“We don’t have to be the best football team to win the league, you don’t have to be the best football team to win anything – you just have to make sure you agree on the way you want to play and go from there, and make something special of it.”

The home team went on to win 2-0 thanks to Mark Gonzalez, but Gerrard’s goal was the biggest flashpoint of the match.

After scoring, the no.8 reeled off in celebration in front of the away end, and made sure to give it to the fans as he raised his arms and jumped in the air.

It may have seemed like an over-the-top celebration for a charity game, but it made plenty of sense due to Gerrard previously managing Rangers.

The former England captain led Celtic’s Old Firm rivals to a Scottish Premiership title win in 2021, ending an era of Hoops dominance.

And there was no love lost between the two sides of the divide, with Celtic fans responding to Gerrard’s celebration by throwing objects at the players.

One fan even took off his green and white shirt and threw it towards the 42-year-old.

One Celtic player even seemed to be heading towards the Reds captain to perhaps tell him to stop goading the fans.

The charity legends match at Anfield was taking part for the LFC Foundation, which raises money for programmes across Merseyside.

Alongside Gerrard, the match features a number of recognisable names such as Dirk Kuyt, Robbie Keane and Luis Garcia.

Speaking after the match, Gerrard said: “Listen, it feels good when I score in the back garden against Lio!

“If you love football, if you love the game, if you love this club, I’ll never get tired of that.

“There was a bit of pressure on me! I took my son to football this morning and he scored a couple, so he had said to me, ‘You best score today or you’re going to have to buy me something.’

“At least I’ll save a few quid by getting on the scoresheet!”
