    Zaheer Khan, the former Indian pacer was named as the new mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants on August 28, Wednesday. He replaced his former Indian teammate Gautam Gambhir who was the previous mentor of the franchise. He is now the head coach of the Indian team.

    Morne Morkel will now partner with Gautam Gambhir as the bowling coach of the Indian team. Gambhir was named the next head coach after Rahul Dravid’s tenure came to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024.

    Meanwhile, Zaheer Khan after his appointment as the mentor said that the real reason behind him joining LSG was the likemindedness about how they thought about the game.

    Zaheer Khan further said that since the common goal was the same hence his decision-making was smooth and swift.

That is the simple connection which I can tell you right now. Of course, there is passion and drive. On the other side, the building blocks are already in place. So the decision was very, very swift and smooth,” said Zaheer in an interaction with Cricbuzz.

    He further spoke about working with the likes of Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav. Both have had an injury-ridden career so far. Mayank was very much the find of the IPL earlier this year but his frequent injuries meant that he could only play just four matches taking seven wickets. Mohsin too has been among the finds for LSG but he too has had an injury-prone career.

    In the same interaction, Zaheer Khan spoke about working with the two youngsters if they are retained by the franchise. It is learned that Zaheer will also be involved in scouting and player-development programs during the off-season.

    “Every year you find talent. Every year, you see someone shining bright, who is a completely unknown quantity. I’m looking forward to it. I think that’s one of the reasons that I want to be part of that dugout.

    “I want to be part of that setup. I want to interact with players and share my knowledge, which hopefully will help them go the distance in some way,” said Zaheer on grooming the two youngsters.

    Zaheer had a tremendously successful international career for India. He picked up 311 Test wickets, 283 ODI wickets, and 17 T20I wickets. He was a rare left-arm pacer for India to play for more than a decade.

    Zaheer Khan played 100 matches in his IPL career playing for franchises like the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. He led the Delhi franchise for a couple of seasons and played his last IPL game in 2017.

    Before joining LSG, Zaheer Khan worked with Mumbai Indians as the director of cricket before taking on the role of head of global development.

    Team India will embark on a new journey this month with Gautam Gambhir as their new head coach. After Rahul Dravid‘s highly successful tenure came to an end last month, the former India opener has replaced him as the new head coach.

    Just like his predecessor Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir has also joined the Indian team as a head coach without the experience of coaching an international or state team. However, Dravid had served as the head coach of India and India U-19 teams.

    He had also served as an interim head coach for India’s limited-overs series in Sri Lanka in 2021 before taking charge of the team permanently. On the other hand, Gautam Gambhir has only served as a mentor in the IPL so far although he has made a big impact. 

    In 2022 and 2023, he was with Lucknow Super Giants and helped the newcomers make it to the playoffs in both seasons. In 2024, LSG failed to progress to the playoffs after parting ways with Gambhir. The former India batsman was the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders this year and helped them win the IPL title after a gap of 10 years.

    One Indian player who has seen Gambhir’s working method as a coach from close quarters is fast bowler Avesh Khan. The right-arm pacer was a part of the LSG team in 2022 and 2023 when Gambhir was the mentor and he has opened up on what makes the legendary batsman a ‘team coach’. He explained that Gambhir has a winning mentality and motivates the players to give their 100 percent each time.

    “Whatever I have learned from him, it is about the mindset that you should always look to get the better of your opponent and give your 100 percent,” Avesh Khan told BCCI ahead of India’s fourth T20I against Zimbabwe.

    “In team meetings, as well as one-on-ones, he would speak less but would convey his point as to what is to be done. He would assign tasks and roles to players and he has always been a ‘team coach’, he always wants to win and everyone to give their 100 percent,” he added.

    He is once in a generation bowler: Avesh Khan

    During the same interview, Avesh Khan also talked about India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, and hailed him as a generational bowler. The young pacer explained how Bumrah always focuses on executing the plans and urges his teammates to do the same as well.

    “Like Virat bhai said, he is a once-in-a-generation bowler, it is true and we all believe so. His style of bowling and his mindset are different, but the main (thing) is his execution, for which we all practice,” said Avesh.

    “Whenever I speak with him, he tells me to focus on the execution. If you are thinking of sending down a yorker, then it has to be a yorker; it cannot be a full toss or a half volley, a bouncer has to be on the shoulders; a length ball has to be (aimed at) the top of off (stump),” he added.

    Avesh is currently in Zimbabwe for the ongoing five-match T20I series. In 3 games, he has picked up 6 wickets and is the joint-leading wicket-taker in the series. India are currently leading the series 2-1 and will be looking to wrap it up by winning the fourth game on Saturday (July 13).

It was here that Tendulkar’s aggression came to the fore. He picked up the ball and pretended to throw it back at the stumps, an action that left Stoinis visibly amused. This moment of intense competitive spirit quickly went viral on social media, drawing attention to the young bowler’s fiery demeanour.

    Marcus Stoinis’ dismissal

    Stoinis, who managed to score 28 runs off 22 balls, including five boundaries, eventually fell on the bowling of experienced leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. The dismissal was a classic example of Chawla’s skill with the wrong’un. Delivered from just wide of the crease, the ball pitched outside off and turned in sharply, striking the right-handed batter dead in front of the middle stump as he missed the sweep completely. The umpire had no hesitation in raising the finger, marking the end of Stoinis’ innings.

    DC posted an impressive score of 208/4 in their 20 overs, showcasing a blend of aggressive and strategic batting. The innings started poorly with Jake Fraser-McGurk falling for a duck in the second ball of the match, caught by Naveen-ul-Haq off Arshad Khan‘s bowling. However, Abishek Porel‘s explosive 58 off 33 balls, which included 5 fours and 4 sixes, provided a solid foundation. Ishant Sharma‘s brilliant spell of 3/34, dismantled the top order, as he claimed the key wickets of Rahul and de Kock. Hooda fell for a duck, compounding their troubles. Despite a spirited 61 off 27 balls from Nicholas Pooran, and a resilient unbeaten 58 off 33 balls by Arshad towards the end, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Marcus Stoinis, Ayush Badoni and Pandya couldn’t provide the necessary support, and despite some late fireworks, LSG could only manage 189/9 in their 20 overs, falling short by 19 runs.

    DC’s bowlers complemented their batters efforts with a disciplined performance. Ishant led the attack with his crucial wickets upfront. Mukesh Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav supported well, each taking one wicket and maintaining a tight line, conceding 33 runs in their respective four-over spells. Khaleel Ahmed and Axar chipped in with a wicket each, while Stubbs and Gulbadin Naib kept things under control during their brief spells. The collective effort ensured that despite Pooran and Arshad Khan’s efforts, LSG never truly threatened the target, securing a well-deserved victory for DC.
