Major questions over Manchester United’s £2billion Old Trafford project emerge

Manchester United’s ambitious plans to build a new 100,000-seater stadium has been called into question by a football finance expert.

Fans were left drooling after images surfaced showing what the £2billion state-of-the-art arena could look like upon completion.

Last February, the club’s minority shareholders, fronted by Ineos chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, put forward plans to build a new stadium close to Old Trafford under the tagline ‘Wembley of the North.’

Since then, plans have gathered momentum with Ratcliffe having created a taskforce consisting of former captain Gary Neville, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and Trafford Council leader Sara Todd.

This week, it was revealed that the plans had crucially gained unanimous support from Trafford Council officers.

Officials say the plans are likely to provide over 90,000 jobs, 15,000 new homes and £7.3bn to the economy with a final decision on the plans expected by the end of the season.

But despite the optimism currently surrounding the project, football finance expert Stefan Borson has expressed his concerns over whether the club has the means to deliver such plans.

“There’s a question around the funding of it,” Borson told talkSPORT’s YouTube show titled ‘How Football Works’.

“It’s all very well talking about Ineos but they are only a 20 per cent shareholder in Manchester United.

“They are not going to put a whole load of money in unless it dilutes the shares of the Glazers.

He added: “It’s not clear yet whether the Glazers are going to be prepared to accept equity investment into Manchester United to then invest in the stadium that will then dilute the Glazers or whether it’s going to have to be even more debt.

“Remember Manchester United has considerable debt already, so to layer on top of it – potentially £3bn and it’s not clear it can be done on this very tight £2bn budget.

“Is it possible United can get funding as an organisation for that amount of money? I think it’s going to be a challenge.

“There’s still big issues regarding the funding of the infrastructure build above and beyond the government intervention which I think will be an assist but not the complete answer.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves this week revealed that she will champion the regeneration project proposed by Man United’s stadium task force.

Meanwhile, Mayor Burnham has compared the ambitious proposals to that of the London 2012 Olympics.

“With our devolved powers we’re mobilising the whole Greater Manchester system to lock in growth for the next decade and reap the rewards for our city-region and UK plc,” said Burnham.

“The project around Old Trafford represents the biggest opportunity for urban regeneration this country has seen since London 2012 and is a key part of our 10-year plan to turbocharge growth across Greater Manchester.

“We look forward to working with the Government on moving freight away from the site around Old Trafford to new locations to open up capacity for our rail network and unlock massive regeneration potential – delivering benefits across the whole of the North.”

Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada added: “The delivery of a world-class stadium can be the catalyst for major regeneration of an area of Greater Manchester which requires new investment to thrive again.

“We cannot achieve that wider aim on our own, which is why we welcome the announcement by the Chancellor and the ongoing support of the Mayor of Greater Manchester and Trafford Council.

“If we work together, there is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a landmark project around Old Trafford that the whole region can be proud of.”

Liverpool vs Manchester United will go ahead despite bad weather

Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester United will go ahead on Sunday afternoon, it has been confirmed.

There were two meetings with fan safety a concern due to weather conditions in the region.

Rain, snow, and ice have blighted Liverpool and the North West in recent days.

And conditions on Sunday have seen gritters deployed in the area.

However it has been announced the game will take place as planned.

A statement read: “Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.

“We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”

Earlier a statement from Liverpool on Sunday morning said: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield.

“At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on.

“A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.

“We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds.”

A post from Liverpool City Council added: “Our gritters are now out on their 3rd run since yesterday afternoon.

“If you have to travel in your car or van, please drive carefully.”

Liverpool will be keen for the clash to go ahead to avoid a fixture pile-up later in the season.

Arne Slot’s side already boast a game in hand over their Premier League title rivals following the postponement of the Merseyside derby last month.

Their scheduled clash with Everton at Goodison Park on December 7 was called off just hours before kick-off due to bad weather.

As it stands, it remains to be seen when that match will be added to the calendar – though it will likely be squeezed into a midweek encounter under the lights.

Another postponement today would cause added heartache for Liverpool who are still fighting in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, with their FA Cup clash with Accrington Stanley on the horizon.

Liverpool have the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the table if their clash with United goes ahead

Should their game with United go ahead, Liverpool will have the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points.

Nearest challengers Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw away at Brighton on Saturday.

Meanwhile Chelsea – currently nine points the Reds – drew 1-1 against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool boast a brilliant record against United at Anfield having failed to taste defeat on their home ground since 2016.

Incredibly, Liverpool haven’t conceded against the Red Devils since their 3-1 victory in December 2018 – which led to the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Since January 2016, Liverpool have scooped four victories and have been held to four goalless draws.

Liverpool Fan insists Trent Alexander Arnold is average and wants him to leave Liverpool

One of those stalemates came in their last Anfield meeting, with Slot hoping his side will emerge victorious this time around.

Liverpool will also be desperate to inflict more woe on United, who have suffered five Premier League defeats in their opening eight games under boss Ruben Amorim.

United, who sit seven points above the relegation zone in 14th spot, have also lost their last four matches in all competitions.

Amorim reveals what he told Maguire before Man United triggered contract clause

Manchester United will extend Harry Maguire’s contract because they are ‘starving for leaders on the pitch’.

The 31-year old had a contract that was set to expire this coming summer but it will now run until June 2026.

    2

Since signing from Leicester City in August 2019 for £80million – which was at the time a record transfer fee for a defender – Maguire has experienced many trials and tribulations.

Through his out of form moments to team struggles, Man United have rarely been settled during his time there.

Even now, Man United sit 14th in the Premier League with four losses on the bounce.

The England international has also experienced a lot of personal abuse due to sub-par performances in a United shirt, but he persisted through it.

Maguire has made 222 appearances for the Red Devils, winning two trophies: the 2022/23 Carabao Cup and 2023/24 FA Cup.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Liverpool at Anfield, Amorim was asked about the centre-back’s future and challenged him to improve.

“We are going to trigger our option,” said the new United boss.

“I spoke with him [Maguire] this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot.

“Also, he has to improve as a leader. We all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment, so we are going to trigger, happily, the option for him.”

Asked if he is a key player, Ruben continued: “When you look at our team we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”

When Amorim was appointed as head coach following the sacking of Erik ten Hag, the future of Maguire was in the balance.

Especially when considering the other options the Portuguese manager would have at his disposal: Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt.

But, to the surprise of some, Maguire has played four consecutive 90 minute matches in the Premier League and appeared a total of seven times under the new manager.

Amorim’s appointment has certainly worked in his favour. The defender has displayed some of his best performances of his career in a back-three, most notably for England, and it’s a system Amorim swears by.

He has even worn the captain’s armband in absence of Bruno Fernandes.

Amorim also confirmed Amad Diallo, whose contract is set to expire June 2025 is ‘near’ a contract renewal.

  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe brands Man United ‘mediocre’ in bombshell interview

Sir Jim Ratcliffe brands Man United ‘mediocre’ in bombshell interview

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has branded Manchester United ‘mediocre’ as he doubles down on his plan to raise standards at the club.

The INEOS owner became a minority shareholder of the Premier League giants earlier this year and has set about revamping numerous different areas of the club, including Old Trafford, ticket pricing and of course, their on-field performances.

While Ruben Amorim‘s start to life as United boss has been bright – two wins, a draw and a defeat to Arsenal in four games – there is still a long way to go.

The Red Devils are currently rooted in a mid-table position and a long way from challenging for the top four or rekindling their title-winning heyday.

In order to get back to dominating domestic and European football like it was under Sir Alex Ferguson, Ratcliffe didn’t hold back in assessing what needed to happen.

Speaking to United We Stand, he said: “To get Manchester United to where we need to get it — it’s a bit like the country.

“We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions then nothing much is going to change.

“We won’t get everything right and it won’t happen overnight, but we haven’t been sat on our hands for nine months. There has been a lot of change. Here at Carrington as you can see.

“We didn’t waste any time to get Old Trafford on the agenda. Changes in the football and executive structure. New players. Ruben [Amorim] has arrived.

“We still have a long way to go and we still have a number of difficult decisions to make but we have to do that for the better. The club has drifted for a long period of time, a decade or so.

“Manchester United has become mediocre. It’s not elite and it is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. That’s what it used to be under Alex.

“There is major change to come to achieve elite status. There has already been huge change.”

But Ratcliffe says that there's a lot of work still to do

A huge topic of frustration has been the club’s efforts in the transfer market, something that Ratcliffe didn’t shy away from addressing.

“We’ve not been good enough at recruitment, you probably agree with that,” says Ratcliffe.

“And until we’re as good as anyone in the world, then it’s not good enough for Manchester United.

“We must have the best recruitment in the world. Data Analysis comes alongside recruitment. It doesn’t really exist here. We’re still in the last century on data analysis here.

“There’s an immense amount of useful data that we can get from data analysis and we’re in the ‘very poor’ bracket with data analysis here. These things don’t happen overnight. You can’t just flick a light switch and sort out recruitment. It’s all about people and we need to find the right people.

“The other big one is we need to run the club efficiently and well. We need to sweat every pound so that we have more capacity for the investment in players. Those are the big-ticket items which take up time.

Ratcliffe is determined to lead Man United back to the top of the sport

    4

Ratcliffe is determined to lead Man United back to the top of the sport

“The other point here is how you grow the amount of money that you can spend on players. You can run the business more efficiently. And you can grow the top line.”

Ratcliffe then added: “I don’t enjoy losing.

“I find that very difficult. I quite like the picture of Pep Guardiola [with marks on his head]. He does not like losing.

“Our results have not been fantastic and I don’t like where we are in the league. I like the challenge. It’s one of the biggest challenges in the sporting world, taking United back to where the club should be.

“That’s a very rewarding challenge if we get there, but it’s a rocky road with ups and downs.”

Zirkzee proved to be key in Bologna‘s fifth-place finish in Serie A last season, which qualified them for the Champions League.

He scored 12 league goals and claimed four assists as he finalises the potential he showcased while on the books at Bayern Munich.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag knows De Ligt all too well given he coached him at Ajax across two seasons.

One of those came in 2018/19 when the Dutch giants shocked European giants Real Madrid in the Champions League as they reached the semi-finals of the competition.

Since then, De Ligt has spent time with Juventus and now Bayern Munich but hasn’t quite lived up to his initial success.

He was also in Netherlands’ squad at Euro 2024 alongside Zirkzee.

  • Goldbridge: Where does Mount fit at United? He can challenge Bruno for his spot

Goldbridge: Where does Mount fit at United? He can challenge Bruno for his spot

In an exclusive column for talkSPORT.com, Mark Goldbridge delivers his verdict on the latest news coming out of Manchester United.

Mason Mount is nearing a return to fitness, but does the £55million signing have a place in Erik ten Hag‘s squad? Plus, the YouTube host responds to the ‘Solskjaer back’ brigade and where Jadon Sancho ranks in the club’s all-time flops.

    5

Mount has returned to training after fourth months out with a calf injury and may soon make his return to the field – but where will he play?Credit: Getty

    Mount-ain to climb

It’s been a write-off for Mason Mount so far at Manchester United. It’s very, very frustrating.

We’ve seen it with Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia at Chelsea and when Jurrien Timber at Arsenal – when you sign a player and then they miss basically most of their first season it’s massively frustrating and it’s easy to get frustrated with the player, the club or the manager, but it’s an injury.

So putting that aside and going back to when we bought Mount, I must admit I was confused. Where does he fit in?

I really liked Mason Mount at Chelsea, when he was good, and he was 24 at the time so he was a good signing, but I was confused where he’s going to play.

    Read more from Mark Goldbridge

I assumed he was going to play where Christian Eriksen did with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, but that’s been proven not to work. You get overrun, you need more defensive cover, and this season we’ve also seen the development of Mainoo.

So where Mount fits in when he’s back…

I look at Martin Odegaard at Arsenal and he’s a magnetic No.10, the way he looks and protects the ball – I think Man United desperately need a player like that, but then what are you doing with Bruno Fernandes?

Ideally Mount plays as the No.10 and we get a little bit more control of the pitch, but there is a big Bruno Fernandes problem there because that is Bruno’s position and he’s the captain, and I really don’t want Bruno on the right wing because that’s just putting a square peg in a round hole.

Goldbridge has previously said Fernandes' form has 'fallen off a cliff' this season - maybe Mount's return can be the push he needs to get back to his best?

    5

Goldbridge has previously said Fernandes’ form has ‘fallen off a cliff’ this season – maybe Mount’s return can be the push he needs to get back to his best?Credit: Getty

I think Mount’s best position is ahead of Mainoo and Casemiro, but what do you do with Bruno?

So I don’t really have the answer, but he can’t play in a midfield three with Bruno and Casemiro, I think that would be massively imbalanced.

But we need him back, we need competition for places, so why shouldn’t he be pushing Bruno out of the team? He’s been off it all season.

Mark Goldbridge labels Jadon Sancho as a Manchester United flop suggesting he ‘completely and utterly failed’ in the Premier League

Ole back? You’re having a laugh

I thought it was a brilliant interview with Solskjaer on The Overlap because I think it encapsulated his strengths and weaknesses – like this blind loyalty to players who weren’t good enough.

When Roy Keane smelled Ole’s drink after his Fred comments – it’s true, he spoke glowingly about players like Fred when ultimately they were not good enough to take Man United to titles, so it exposes the naivety of Solskjaer as a coach.

I don’t think he’s a very good coach to be honest, but what a guy and he is a legend of the club and he comes across how we’ve always known him to be.

There was a massive guilt thing in the fanbase to turn on Ole and say he needed to go because he’s loved so much, but you’ve got to be cruel to be kind. He was not good enough.

There was some other interesting stuff as well, he spoke about players not standing up, downing tools, not wanting the captaincy, I think that’s was really interesting, especially when that’s clearly a problem at United now.

The inconsistency, I believe, comes from a lack of mentality in the dressing room from some players… and there’s been all sorts of speculation about who these players are.

Goldbridge says Solskjaer's appearance on the Overlap showed Man United are still being dogged by the same problems behind the scenes

    5

Goldbridge says Solskjaer’s appearance on the Overlap showed Man United are still being dogged by the same problems behind the scenesCredit: YouTube

But the stuff about signings was brilliant, because when you’ve got managers like Jose Mourinho and now Erik ten Hag who have struggled with that and you’ve got Solskjaer coming out and saying ‘I wanted Jude Bellingham and I wanted Erling Haaland, I told them about these players and they didn’t do it’ – that is ridiculous.

I think Solskjaer said two or three times, before he even came to the club as manager, ‘Go and buy Haaland’, he then comes to the club and says Haaland has a release clause and United still ignore him, and now Haaland is doing what he’s doing – for Manchester City!

There would still be some United fans, especially with the debate about Ten Hag, who would say, ‘Bring back Ole’, which is just incredible. It’s just complete and utter nonsense and it’s red-tinted glasses ignoring the past.

I think the interview is completely about making himself look good so he can get a job elsewhere, but as a United fan I’m quite glad because it also just exposes the massive problems at the club.

We’ve got another manager under fire and Solskjaer is coming out and telling the problems he had there and, knowing they’re still there, it just highlights to United fans to enormity of the job and the massive amount of problems that have gone on over the last few years behind the scenes that make managing that club really hard no matter how good you are.

    Top of the flops?

I think Jadon Sancho has to go down as a flop, and that’s always a hard word to use, but he does.

This is a player we spent two summers trying to sign. I was really excited about it, a fantastic CV at Dortmund, but to be honest with you he completely and utterly failed in the Premier League.

Sancho put in a man-of-the-match display to help Borussia Dortmund into the Champions League quarter-finals with a win over PSV

    5

There have been flashes, but that’s not good enough, especially when you look at what players like Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka are doing.

He had this opportunity to come to the Premier League for a big, big transfer fee and wages and at a big club, and he’s failed.

There’s been a lot of stuff about blaming Ten Hag, well he wasn’t there when Sancho signed, he was with Solskjaer for a year.

In the first three months of Ten Hag’s reign the manager let him go off and deal with the issues that he had, I think he’s been well looked after by Manchester United.

He’s just another Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and every other Man United player who has failed. He’s not in an exclusive club, there are a lot of players who fail at all sorts of clubs.

There are reports Sancho could be set to stay put at Dormund in the summer following his loan return from Old Trafford

    5

I think Jadon Sancho just needs to look in a mirror, look at why he’s failed and try and rescue his career, because he’s a really talented player.

But not at Manchester United. I think the bridges are burnt. We need players who take responsibility, and I just don’t think Sancho has done that.

So I wish him all the best, but he does need to leave and move on.

  • Mark Goldbridge hits back at ‘weird’ criticism of Rasmus Hojlund interview

Mark Goldbridge hits back at ‘weird’ criticism of Rasmus Hojlund interview

Mark Goldbridge has responded to reports that his Rasmus Hojlund interview didn’t go well with some Manchester United players.

The talkSPORT host and YouTuber conducted a one-on-one with the Red Devils striker, which was seen as a huge coup for his independent YouTube channel The United Stand.

    2

Goldbridge sat down with Hojlund to discuss his fast start at United

However, during the weekend it was reported in the United We Stand fanzine that ‘a couple of players’ were disgruntled by Hojlund’s decision to talk to a YouTube channel that ‘was built on negativity and slaughtering United players’.

Responding to the story, Goldbridge told talkSPORT Breakfast: “If players don’t play well, that’s what we do, that’s what I grew up with and it’s no different now.

“It’s a load of nonsense actually, that interview took a long time to arrange, it was at Carrington [the club’s training ground], all the players, the club, the manager, everyone was fully aware of it.

“When you’ve got media commitments it’s not a secret that a journalist comes in and does an interview with a player.

“It’s just another weird leak, another weird story out of Manchester United, it’s almost as if we kidnapped Hojlund and did an interview behind their backs.”

He continued: “It took a long time to do it, because we’re not talkSPORT, it’s fan-led media.

“We had to persuade them and show them our big audience, they said OK and the player was alright with it, the club was alright with it and everything was fine.

“It was done weeks ago and then you hear this weekend that a couple of players were unhappy with it, that could be anything.

“It was well received so maybe those players are a bit jealous, I don’t know, and it might not even be true.”

Thankfully for Hojlund, he’s unlikely to lose any fans given his extraordinary form at United.

Rasmus Hojlund tells Mark Goldbridge that Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney were his Manchester United childhood idols

The £72million summer signing has seven goals and an assist in his last six Premier League games, and is certainly starting to live up to expectations.

Currently out of action with an injury picked up against Luton on February 18, the striker has a chance of returning against Liverpool in the FA Cup on March 17.
