The new-look Liverpool XI to rival strengthened Arsenal and Man City next term

Liverpool could be set for a summer of upheaval as three of their key players’ futures remain up in the air.

The Reds are in pole position to lift the Premier League title, but they may well have to start planning for life without Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold heading into next season.

There have been growing fears that all three stars could leave Anfield in the summer, when their current contracts set to expire.

As yet, little progress appears to have been made on new deals for the trio, and club legend Robbie Fowler believes it is highly unlikely that each of the iconic figures will stay at Liverpool.

Appearing on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan the day after the Reds’ Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle, the former striker hinted at a busy summer ahead on Merseyside.

“From a Liverpool fan point of view, you’re mega disappointed if any of them don’t sign,” Fowler said.

“I don’t think the three of them will, if I’m being totally honest. But it’s going to be one of those things with Liverpool now.

“Certainly after the performance yesterday from some of the players when they’d see him, I think Arne Slot knows that he’s maybe going to have a big summer planned because he’ll probably want to bring his own players in.

“So regardless of those players staying or going, you know that there’s going to be a few incomings anyway. So if it’s those players, so be it.”

With some huge departures potentially on the cards in the coming months, here is how Liverpool could line up next campaign without Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk.

Goalkeeper Alisson is almost certain to remain first choice between the sticks, having established himself as one of the world’s best in his position.

This is despite the imminent arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, with a deal already agreed for the Georgian keeper to join the Reds from Valencia in the summer.

Left-back is the first position where fans could see movement, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

talkSPORT previously confirmed the Hungarian is on Liverpool’s radar, with a transfer meaning that mainstay full-back Andy Robertson would have to make way for him.

With captain Van Dijk’s future hanging in the balance, having admitted he has ‘no idea‘ if he will be staying or leaving, discussions will surely be taking place over who will partner Ibrahima Konate at centre-back next term.

One player who could fill the Dutchman’s shoes is Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

According to the Mirror, the Reds are leading the race to sign the England international, who would prefer a move to the north west ahead of other potential suitors Newcastle and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, should Alexander-Arnold decide on pastures new, with Real Madrid the likely destination, head coach Slot will have to plan for life without the playmaking right-back.

But he may already have a ready-made successor here, with Conor Bradley previously proving himself a more than capable replacement.

The Northern Irishman has established himself as an important squad player since his emergence under Jurgen Klopp, including starting in last year’s Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

The midfield will likely look familiar, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all set to retain their spots.

But the league leaders may have to bolster their engine room back-up options, with Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo both being highlighted as players who could move on in the summer.

Moving into the front line, the potential departure of talisman Salah will have a huge impact on how the league leaders shape up.

While the ‘Egyptian King’ has starred from the right hand side, the Reds have no shortage of attacking firepower out wide, namely in the shape of regular starters Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.

This could prompt the Reds to deploy the pair on either wing, and instead look to replace the loss of Salah’s huge goalscoring threat by signing a new striker.

Darwin Nunez has been inconsistent leading the line, while injuries have prevented Diogo Jota from a consistent run in the role.

And Fowler has urged his old club to fill this gap by making a sensational move for Newcastle goal machine Alexander Isak.

The Swede has ranked among the Premier League’s top scorers since his move to England in 2022, and currently sits third in the goalscoring charts this term, behind Erling Haaland and Salah.

  • Ange sat on the brink of PL ruin. One $90m phone call could flip familiar Spurs script

Ange sat on the brink of PL ruin. One $90m phone call could flip familiar Spurs script

Ange Postecoglou’s job is on the line, there’s no two ways about it — but his role in securing the signature of Mathys Tel proves to be a pivotal moment in his Tottenham tenure.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

The 19-year-old was desperate for game time after playing limited minutes for Bayern Munich this season and it was Spurs, alongside Manchester United and Chelsea vying for his signature.

Tottenham officials agreed a $120m AUD fee to sign Tel, but after chairman Daniel Levy flew to Munich to pitch his vision to the young gun, he baulked and declined the move.

    That’s where Postecoglou stepped in.

The Australian picked up the phone and called Tel, offering his own view of the path forward and exactly where he saw the rising star fitting in his side.

Suddenly, Tel had a change of heart. Moving quickly, he travelled to London to initially sign on loan before he was convinced to insert a $90m AUD buy option in his contract, for a potential six-year deal.

His conversation with the former Celtic boss was a clear turning point, and that sequence of events sums up the situation Postecoglou finds himself precariously placed in.

“Remember on Friday, Spurs agreed a permanent deal with Bayern Munich but the player said he didn’t want the move and preferred a move to Arsenal, Aston Villa or Manchester United,” Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth said.

“They didn’t peruse the move. But Ange Postecoglou got on the phone, spoke to Tel personally and convinced him Spurs were the place to be.”

Multiple reports over Postecoglou’s future in north London have not been able to produce a consensus, with some putting the Australian on the brink, and others saying he’s safe for the foreseeable future.

Postecoglou himself admitted in January “I reckon there is probably a fair chunk that will say no” when asked if he will be Tottenham manager beyond the next three weeks.

However, Spurs’ Tel saga — specifically the way it ended — is suggestive of a slightly more secure future for Postecoglou than some have predicted.

Levy turned to Postecoglou in an attempt to try and finish the job he was unable to complete, while also allowing him to sign other players during his stint as manager.

Premier League legend Gary Neville said that Tel had made a good decision to join Spurs, with Postecoglou’s philosophy part of the reason.

“Tottenham are a huge draw, the stadium and the training ground – and the manager with his style of football. It’s a thrilling style that creates chances,” Sky Sports’ Neville said.

“I’m glad Tel is going there after flirting with a couple of other clubs. Tel will improve Spurs.

“They have a big couple of weeks coming up. Sometimes players like the idea of playing for a club but the important thing is to play football. That’s what Tottenham can provide him.

“They are an amazing football club with an amazing fanbase and they have some great games coming up that he can contribute in.”

Postecoglou being handed the keys to the Tel transfer, and personally speaking to the young gun in a bid to change his mind, hints at a manager who’s been backed by the club for its next phase — not one who is being sacked imminently.

Even so, managing under the rule of Levy comes with an ominous history that Postecoglou will hope his new signings can help him defy.

Sam Kerr’s criminal trial gets underway | 01:34

Levy has been in charge at Tottenham since ENIC’s takeover in 2001, winning one League Cup in 2008 during his tenure as the longest current serving chairman.

During his 24 years, he’s sacked and hired 16 managers.

Postecoglou is just the latest in a long line of mentors who have failed to deliver without the significant financial investment to compete with the Premier League’s heavyweights.

Yet he was still able to convince one of the world’s brightest talents to join him in North London, and the chairman was not.

But should Spurs’ struggles continue to close out the 2024/25 season, it will be Postecoglou who is thrown out the door — not Levy, who refuses to listen to fan’s criticisms.

Levy watched on as Postecoglou struggled to field a starting eleven in recent weeks, with injuries tallying almost every game.

Fans have protested openly against the club’s ownership in recent weeks, even staging a mass event at the Tottenham club shop to try and enact change.

However, Levy has previously said that he doesn’t listen to criticism from the club’s faithful, with former Premier League striker Chris Sutton questioning the chairman.

“Daniel Levy is such a powerful figure – he wants to win trophies, but that’s not his primary objective, he wants to make money and that’s why Tottenham fans are angry,” he said on BBC.

“But, does Daniel Levy listen to anybody? He’s a stubborn so and so, we can talk as much as we like about it but he’s such a powerful figure – what is going to change?

“You can have your banners up, you can sing Levy out – but is he really going to listen to that?”

While Levy has been the focal point of fans’ woes, former Manchester United scout Mick Brown explained prior to deadline day that Postecoglou’s position was shaping as a familiar story.

“It’s mapping out at Tottenham as it often has done over the years,” he said to Football Insider.

“The manager of the time needs players, it gets to a point where the chairman is accused of keeping his hands in his pockets, he starts getting pressure from the fans, and he sacks the manager.

“He’s sacked 15 managers during his time there. It’s ‘watch this space’ at Tottenham at the moment.

“They’ve been down this road before.

“Chairmen, particularly Daniel Levy, don’t like pressure from the fans so they react and make a decision. That’s not my opinion, it’s a fact, it’s history.”

However, Tottenham’s pair of signings could be seen as a renewed show of faith in Postecoglou.

Last month, the club was in freefall with losses in the league piling up each week, while Levy’s pursestrings remained largely tightened.

But a pressure-relieving 0-2 away win over Brentford on the weekend, followed by two key coups late in the transfer window have offered new hope for Postecoglou’s future at the club.

Alongside Tel, Lens centre back Kevin Danso has also joined the club in a timely boost for the Australian’s injury-ravaged side.

Even so it wasn’t all good news in the market for Postecoglou, he was desperate to sign a second centre back, with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi snubbing Spurs in favour of Aston Villa.

AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori also rejected the club’s approach, while Crystal Palace declined a $140m AUD bid for England representative Marc Guehi.

The Guehi move in particular highlighted the difference between Spurs and other heavyweights, refusing to up their offer to secure a player who has been a proven Premier League performer.

Spurs still sit in 14th in the Premier League, losing four-straight games before breaking that streak against Brentford.

It is therefore likely that results in a trio of cup competitions, the Europe League, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, will be pivotal in Postecoglou surviving the 2024/25 season.

    Kerr’s alleged racial harassment shown | 00:50

Spurs have a 1-0 lead after the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi finals, with the second clash with Liverpool scheduled for Friday morning.

The recent return of Micky van de Ven proves crucial for Spurs, but the likes of Christian Romero, Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario, among others, still sidelined.

Postecoglou will be desperate for Tel and Danso to hit the ground running in the hopes of helping Tottenham delve deeper into their cup campaigns.

The equation is simple for Postecoglou — win silverware and he will likely keep his job.

But the fact that he is still here to hold onto that hope represents an uptick in fortunes for a manager who, just last month, was struggling to field an XI in what some where billing as a relegation fight.

Chilwell joins Palace on loan – and Simon Jordan believes deal may impact Guehi

Ben Chilwell has ended his Chelsea nightmare under Enzo Maresca by joining Crystal Palace on loan until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old hasn’t featured in the Premier League since April 2024, with his only appearance this term coming in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup win over Barrow in September.

talkSPORT revealed over the weekend how the Eagles had offered the England international a career lifeline before the window slams shut on Monday night.

And now Oliver Glasner’s side have confirmed the transfer, with Chilwell making the switch from west to south London.

It is understood that the Blues will be paying 50 per cent of the left-back’s £200,000-a-week wages during his stay at Selhurst Park.

Chilwell will now compete with fellow Three Lions star Tyrick Mitchell for a spot in Palace‘s staring XI.

On completing the move, Chilwell said: “I’m very excited to be here. Crystal Palace are a club that’s going in a great direction.

“You look at the last few months, with the results and how the team’s playing, and it was a no-brainer to make the decision to come here.”

It remains to be seen who will be Glasner’s first-choice with Mitchell starting in each of the club’s 24 top-flight matches this campaign.

While Palace have made a deadline day signing in Chilwell, they could have lost a key player in centre-back Marc Guehi.

talKSPORT understands that Tottenham had a £70million offer knocked back by Palace, who has 18 months left on his contract.

Guehi was also the subject of multiple failed bids from Newcastle last summer.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move to bring the 24-year-old back to Stamford Bridge having sold him to Palace for around £18m in 2021.

It would see him reunited with Trevoh Chalobah, who he forged a formidable partnership with in the first half of the season before Chelsea recalled the Cobham graduate.

And former Palace owner Simon Jordan believes Palace’s acquisition of Chilwell could play a role in Chelsea once again securing Guehi’s services.

The talkSPORT co-host said on Monday: “It’s an interesting dynamic.

“People were suggesting that Palace and Chelsea would not have a great relationship after they recalled Chalobah.

“Here you have Chilwell being thrown into the mix.

“It may lead to a situation where you have Guehi going to Chelsea in the summer because Chelsea are doing Palace a favour.”

Guehi came through Chelsea’s Cobham academy but made just two appearances for the club, none of them in the Premier League.

He enjoyed a loan spell at Championship club Swansea during the 2020/21 season before completing an £18m move to Palace in the summer of 2021.

Fine performances for Palace saw him receive his first senior England call-up in March 2022.

Although he wasn’t selected for the Three Lions squad at the 2022 World Cup, Guehi made the cut for England’s Euro 2024 squad and was commended for his performance throughout the tournament, which saw England lose in the final.

ANGE’S SPURS BACK IN TEL EQUATION

After initially rejecting a move to Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou’s club have reportedly made strides in their attempts to sign French young gun Mathys Tel.

According to ESPN, the 19-year-old travelled to London on deadline day after a breakthrough in negotiations.

Tel will reportedly join Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich, however it remains to be seen how his contract will be structured.

It looms unlikely there will be an option or an obligation for the North London club to buy the rising star once the load period ends.

Chelsea and Manchester United were also reportedly interested in Tel’s services after he was seeking a move away from the German giants due to a lack of game time.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had previously flown to Munich, but was unable to convince the winger to make a permanent move to London after a $100m AUD transfer fee was agreed between clubs.

However, he reportedly had a change of heart and remained open to a loan move after speaking with coach Postecoglou.

Spurs are also keen to add more defensive recruits before the window closes.

The BBC reported Crystal Palace rejected a $140m AUD million bid from Tottenham for captain Marc Guehi, who has just 18 months left to run of his contract at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham reportedly won’t make any further bids to sign the English centre back.

Palace previously turned down a host of bids in the summer, with the final offer tabled by Newcastle at the time sitting at $130m AUD.

Their resistance to let their captain go comes after injuries in their defensive ranks, with only three fit centre backs currently in their squad.

Chelsea’s Axel Disasi has been linked with a move across London, while Spurs also completed the signing of centre-back Kevin Danso from Lens on Sunday.

CITY MAKE MOVE FOR FOURTH SIGNING

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Porto before Monday’s transfer deadline.

City’s midfield frailties without Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who is out for the season due to a serious knee injury, were exposed in a 5-1 thrashing at Arsenal on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s men find themselves in a battle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with the defending champions sitting fourth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool.

City could also use reinforcements for a blockbuster Champions League playoff round tie against holders Real Madrid later this month.

Former Barcelona midfielder Gonzalez, 23, will reportedly arrive for a fee of $100m AUD.

City have already splashed out more than $240m AUD million in January on Egypt forward Omar Marmoush and young defenders Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov.

    WEST HAM SECURE NEW MARKSMAN

West Ham on Monday signed Brighton striker Evan Ferguson on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old Ireland international will be reunited with Graham Potter, who replaced Julen Lopetegui as manager at the London Stadium last month.

Ferguson has made 13 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls this season, but most of those have been off the bench.

Brighton boss Fabian Huerzeler said the loan would give the highly rated Ferguson much-needed game time.

“Evan has had a frustrating 12 months with injuries and for him to get back to the level he’s capable of and to continue his development, he really needs to be playing regularly,” he said.

“This loan gives him that opportunity, and under a manager he knows well. We are looking forward to watching Evan’s progress over the next few months, and we wish him well.” Ferguson has made 80 appearances in all competitions for Brighton since his debut as a 16-year-old in the League Cup under Potter, scoring 17 goals.

He will boost West Ham’s attacking options in the absence of Michail Antonio and Niclas Fuellkrug, both of whom are injured.

“It feels good to be here. Seeing the stadium and being here today, I’ve got a very good feeling,” Ferguson told West Ham TV.

“I can see and know how big West Ham United is. It was a big opportunity for me to come here. I know the gaffer well and look forward to working under him again.” Potter said Ferguson had “plenty of quality attributes” that would help the team, currently 15th in the Premier League.

Chelsea consider return for Marc Guehi and Enzo Maresca could recall loanee

Chelsea’s injury crisis at centre-back could prompt them to attempt to re-sign Marc Guehi, talkSPORT understands.

It is also understood the Blues are considering recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace.

Levi Colwill and 18-year-old Josh Acheampong started in the heart of defence for Chelsea in their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Tosin Adorabioyo and Axel Disasi were unused substitutes.

The unlikely centre-back pairing follows injuries to defensive duo Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile in recent weeks as they remain sidelined with hamstring and thigh issues respectively.

Fofana was taken off in the second half of Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on December 1 and has not been sighted since.

The Frenchman’s prolonged absence sparked a worrying claim from Maresca regarding when Fofana may return to action.

“Unfortunately he could be out for the season,” Maresca said.

“We don’t know exactly for the entire season but for sure he could be out for part of it.”

With Fofana and Badiashile out, Maresca is in need of defensive reinforcements.

Guehi is one option, although he will not come cheap.

talkSPORT understands that a move for the 22-cap England international will set Chelsea back at least £50million.

Guehi moved to Selhurst Park from Chelsea in July 2021 for an estimated £18m and has made over 130 appearances for the Ealges since.

The 24-year-old was the subject of intense speculation during the summer as Newcastle United made him a priority.

Newcastle tested the Eagles’ resolve with four attempts in the summer window and culminated in a club-record bid of £65m.

However, Palace held their ground and held on to their skipper, who’s Selhurst Park contract expires in June 2026.

Ending Chalobah’s loan early would present a significantly cheaper option for Chelsea.

Chelsea’s dealings in the summer left Chalobah facing limited game time at Stamford Bridge and he joined the Eagles in August.

After missing the first five games of the season with a muscle injury, the 25-year-old has since made 14 appearances for the club at centre-back.

Chalobah has slotted in well at Palace but his stint could be curtailed

Despite the speculation, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner remains confident Chalobah will remain at Selhurst Park at the end of the window and pointed out Chelsea still had two other centre-backs on their bench in Saturday’s draw.

“I could see that there was (Axel) Disasi and Tosin (Adarabioyo) on the bench,” Glasner said.

“I don’t know if you need (more) if you play with two. I was just reading that Anselmino comes back so they have five (centre-backs).

“I don’t know if they need eight, I don’t know what they are planning. Trevoh is doing very well for us and we are planning with him.”

Guehi defended on armband as Palace and Ipswich captains urged to clarify stance

Oliver Glasner insists Marc Guehi is ‘against discrimination and any abuse’ when quizzed on the player’s decision to write on his rainbow armband.

The Crystal Palace defender – who is the son of church minister – wrote ‘I love Jesus’ on the Stonewall armband in his side’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle last weekend.

After being warned by the Football Association for the message, he wrote ‘Jesus loves you’ with a smiley face on his rainbow armband at Portman Road for his side’s 1-0 over Ipswich on Tuesday.

The armbands are sent to clubs to be given to Premier League captains to wear in games to show support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport against Newcastle.

Glasner was asked about his captain’s decision when speaking to Amazon after the game.

“I think we should calm it down,” he said. “Everybody knows Marc, everyone knows he is a great player, he is a great personality. He is a very humble guy.

“He wore this. It’s LGBT and everyone now is about integration, no discrimination and Marc as well. I think we all have the same opinion.

“We are in sports and in sports we are always against discrimination and any kind of abuse, and Marc as well.”

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), ‘initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity’ are permitted.

However, it is forbidden to have ‘political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images’ written anywhere.

Ipswich captain Sam Morsy has also been in focus after choosing to ditch the rainbow armband totally, with the Tractor Boys citing his religious beliefs as his reason for refusing to wear it.

Egypt international Morsy is a practising Muslim.

Speaking about the pair’s decisions regarding the rainbow armbands, talkSPORT’s GameDay host Adrian Durham said on Tuesday night: “What is Morsy’s message to any gay fans or players as captain of Ipswich Town Football Club? What’s he trying to say to them?

“That needs to be clarified and if it doesn’t align with Ipswich’s club policy or the Premier League policy then Ipswich Town have a problem they need to resolve. They need to ask if their captain’s fit for the job of fulfilling all the roles required of him as a captain.

“Being a captain is more than tossing a coin in the centre circle before the game. It’s more than just shouting at your teammates. It’s about representing the club. So does your captain not wearing the armband reflect the feeling of the club?

“Has Kieran McKenna thought that through properly? Why not make someone else captain for the games with the rainbow armband?
So Morsi’s message to the LGBTQ community needs to be clarified and then Ipswich need to move forward from there.

“Same with Guehi who has written all over the rainbow armband. If Guehi’s aim was to deface and therefore devalue the message of the rainbow armband and the rainbow laces campaign then we need to ask why he would do that. Can he explain that to Stonewall?

“Could he explain that face to face with a gay Palace fan I wonder? If his message is that he’s worn the armband and supports the campaign but at the same time he loves Jesus then actually I’m okay with that. Not sure why he had to write all over the armband though.

Guehi wrote on the band for the second time on Tuesday

    5

“In both cases, as Premier League captains, they both need to make their position clear and if that then means they have to give up the captaincy because they’re not fit for the role within the club then so be it.”

Former Lionesses star and current talkSPORT co-host Lianne Sanderson agreed the captains need to come out and clarify their position.

“It’s interesting because I think people have a freedom of speech,” she said. “They can say whatever they want and people can say, ‘oh you know they shouldn’t have to wear it if they wanted to’. I think Marc Guehi equally similar to Morsy. I think they’re both in the wrong if I’m being honest.

“Marc Guehi doing that I think it was wrong. I think you know him putting you know I love Jesus on his armband. It’s an interesting one because I’m not really a religious person, Adrian.

“But I think it depends on someone’s perception of the bible and I think that’s where he’s going with that. And I love the fact that you’ve said these things Adrian because people don’t want to talk about these types of things.

“I think it’s easy for people to say, ‘oh yeah you would say that because you’re gay’ but that’s not the reality and I agree it’s how people feel. Now I don’t think someone needs to wear an armband all the time to prove they support our community.

Simon Jordan reacts to Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi writing ‘I Love Jesus’ on his rainbow armband and Ipswich Town’s Sam Morsy refusing to wear it in the Premier League

“I want campaigns to be longer than a month to be honest and I think sometimes it is very much tokenism but it does hurt our community when players don’t want to do that. Now you’re in England and that’s the campaign so do that. The same as when I go to Qatar I respect that culture.

“Qataris love me. Yes there might be different people who have different opinions about those situations but I respect that culture. So I think you know it’s a massive kick in the teeth that they did this but I think with Marc Guehi doing that he was proving a point.

“So I think they do need to come out and have something to say. I really do. They’re leaders of the club and you’re right. It’s not just about you know tossing the coin in the centre circle.

“It’s much more than that and I think it does affect our community and it’s unfortunate that people still feel this way. Wearing an armband like when I saw John McGinn wearing it the other night I was like, ‘that’s actually really powerful’ but I thought the days were gone Adrian where this would be a talking point because it’s just an armband but it means so much to our community.

“So I have a split like opinion on it with regards to whether I think players should have to do X, Y and Z I think they should want to do it, if I’m being honest.”

And former England striker Dean Ashton thinks Guehi and Morsy’s moves have detracted from the positive impact that Stonewall’s campaign with the Premier League does have.

    Guehi is a devout Christian

However, he believes their moves don’t signify ‘standing absolutely against’ LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.

“Well I think it’s such a great point about the captaincy itself because ultimately that is who we’re looking at,” Ashton said. “We’re looking at two players. We’re not looking at the 11 players. We’re looking at the captains because of what that armband represents certainly with this campaign and therefore if you choose to either not wear it or you write on it you are effectively making a point with that.

“But I also think at the same time if you have to sort of take into account the fact that some certain players have had for their whole life and it might be part of their religion.

“If they choose not to do something there will be other players that aren’t the captains that maybe fall in the middle where they maybe don’t want to openly support a campaign but that doesn’t mean that they ultimately are totally against it.

“So I think we have sometimes got to be careful that just because somebody doesn’t do something that automatically means they are making a stand absolutely against it. But at the same time I think you’re right there has to be some clarity.

“If they are going to do that then I think it is really important for everybody to understand why and then have a perspective on it. At the moment it’s just up in the air and left for everybody to guess.

“Then it makes it about that rather than lots of other players that are more than happy – we talked about John McGinn – and other players that are happy to openly support the campaign and that’s then kind of missed.”

Durham concluded: “I agree the clarification of the individual standpoint is everything and I do believe it’s easily resolved that if a captain doesn’t want to wear it then you give it to another player who does want to wear it and he becomes the captain.”

Ten Hag target vetoed, Arsenal transfer blow, Newcastle not giving up on Guehi

Marc Guehi’s links with a move away from Crystal Palace will not go away anytime soon, and this time there could be competition.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish has been applauded for rejecting Newcastle’s advances for Marc Guehi, but is braced for a fresh fight to keep his star defender in January and next summer.

Newcastle were confident of prising Guehi away from Selhurst Park after tabling an offer worth a club record £70million deal, only for Parish to up his asking price to £75m at the 11th hour.

The Eagles’ stance was helped by the fact Guehi, who has captained Palace in their first three Premier League games, was not actively pushing for the move.

However, talkSPORT has been told Guehi is in no rush to extend contract, which expires at the end of next season.

Not only does that open the door for Newcastle to return with a fresh offer, but will put the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea on alert.

    Ten Hag transfer request denied

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was blocked from re-signing Sofyan Amrabat by the club’s new hierarchy.

Ten Hag presented a case to bring back Amrabat, who had a mixed loan spell last season before impressing in the shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City, but sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox decided to go in a different direction.

talkSPORT understands Everton also explored a move for the Morocco international late in the transfer window, but he has since signed for Fenerbahce on loan from Fiorentina.

United spent £200m on five new face this summer, bringing in Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, and Ten Hag is understood to be fully on board with Wilcox and Ashworth leading their recruitment after the under-pressure Dutchman took a lead role in previous windows.

    Still waiting…

Southampton have been left sweating on whether Ajax completed the paperwork to sign Kamaldeen Sulemana on time.

The Ajax hierarchy believe they got the loan deal over the line seconds before the Dutch window closed on Monday.

But they are awaiting approval from FIFA to ratify the Ghana international’s move to Amsterdam.

If it goes through, there is a £17m buy option included.

Southampton splashed out on a club-record fee of £22m to sign Sulemana from Rennes in February 2023, but he has been a huge disappointment at the club having managed just two goals in 44 appearances.

Galatasaray fans go wild as they meet new loan signing Victor Osimhen at the airport at 4am after the Napoli strikers failed moves to Chelsea and Al Ahli

    Wolves star staying put

Arsenal target Dan Bentley is set to sign a new contract at Wolves.

The Gunners were keen to sign Bentley throughout the transfer window to help with their quota of homegrown players.

However, Wolves were reluctant to lose Bentley, who is expected to be number two behind new signing Sam Johnstone – ahead of Jose Sa.

Wolves are ready to trigger the two-year extension in Bentley’s contract, which is up at the end of the season.

  • Ivan Toney and Jadon Sancho among stars who could seal deadline day transfers

Ivan Toney and Jadon Sancho among stars who could seal deadline day transfers

Deadline day is here, and it promises to be a frantic end to the summer transfer window for many Premier League clubs.

The futures of a number of big-name stars are up in the air as Friday’s 11pm cut-off steadily approaches, with plenty of questions needing to be answered before then.

    5

Toney has two possible options – Saudi Arabia or ChelseaCredit: Getty

Here, talkSPORT.com takes a look at the deals to watch as the clock ticks down.

    Ivan Toney

Toney’s future has been one of the hot topics since before the transfer window opened.

The Brentford striker has been far from shy about his desire to move to a bigger club and must have anticipated having a plethora options after making an impact for England at the Euros.

But, despite meeting the Arsenal hierarchy, offers from the top clubs in the Premier League have been in short supply and if Toney is to leave west London a big-money switch to Saudi Arabia looks like the most likely outcome.

Toney has already verbally agreed a three-year contract worth an eye-watering £50m with Al Ahli, however they still need to agree a fee with Brentford.

talkSPORT understands that while links with Manchester United are wide of the mark, Chelsea are keeping tabs on the situation in the event they fail to land top target Victor Osimhen, himself wanted by Al Ahli.

    Marc Guehi

Newcastle were hoping to have been able to parade Guehi in a black-and-white shirt long before now, but this is another deal that will go down to the wire.

The Magpies have had numerous packages knocked back by Palace, whose chairman Steve Parish is determined to drive a hard bargain, especially after Guehi enhanced his reputation with his stellar displays for England in Germany this summer.

Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell was optimistic at the end of last week that a deal was getting closer, but talkSPORT has since learned that Palace have increased their asking price to in excess of £70m having sold centre-back partner Joachim Andersen to Fulham.

If they cannot get Guehi then Mitchell could well make a move for Chelsea defender Axel Disasi or RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan.

Newcastle have chased Guehi all summer but could be set to miss out on their top defensive target

    Jadon Sancho

He may have made peace with manager Erik ten Hag but it is pretty clear Sancho does not have a future at Old Trafford after being left out of the squad for Manchester United’s first two Premier League games of the season.

As talkSPORT reported earlier this week Juventus have been the most serious suitors for the England international – after selling Federico Chiesa to Liverpool for £12.5m – but there is still an issue over the Italian giants’ reluctance to include an obligation to buy in any loan agreement.

Chelsea are admirers of Sancho but any move to Stamford Bridge would hinge on him taking a pay cut and United being willing to sign one of the Blues’ unwanted players like £300,000-a-week Raheem Sterling. The Red Devils have already rejected a move for Ben Chilwell.

Alex Crook believes swapping Jadon Sancho for Raheem Sterling would be a good move for Manchester United

Bayern Munich and Sancho’s old club Borussia Dortmund are other potential deadline day destinations.

    Kingsley Coman

It’s been a relatively quiet summer at Arsenal with Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spain Euro 2024-winning midfielder Mikel Merino their only outfield signings.

Mikel Arteta has so far resisted Gunners fans’ urges to sign a new striker, but it has been clear for a couple of weeks now that he would be interested in recruiting another winger to ease Bukayo Saka’s workload.

Arteta is a massive fan of the quicksilver Nico Williams but it is virtually impossible to prise him away from Athletic Bilbao so late in the window.

Coman has won it all at club level - and has been offered to Arsenal

One more live option of Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman, who has been told he can leave Bavaria.

The presence of a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia means this would not be an easy deal to do, but a loan move for the French international is one to keep an eye on.

    Billy Gilmour

Brighton fans were left shocked when talkSPORT reported the Seagulls could be willing to cash in on Napoli target Gilmour if they receive an offer north of £14m.

Speculation of a deal being close to fruition has been rife ever since, but Gilmour remains a Brighton player and was one of the stars of their 2-1 victory at home to Manchester United on Saturday.

Boss Fabian Hurzeler is a fan of the Scotland international and Matt O’Riley’s ankle ligament injury means they are a new signing light in the middle of the park, but with Brighton spending more than £200m this summer and needing to trim a bloated squad the situation remains fluid heading into deadline day.

Other players who could depart the Amex include Tariq Lamptey, Jakub Moder, Yeremy Sarmiento and big earner Mahmoud Dahoud.

    Jhon Duran

The Colombian was close to joining West Ham earlier in the window, but they could not agree a fee with Aston Villa.

The Hammers retain an interest, but it would take a lot of departures for them to be able to raise the funds to reignite a deal.

Duran has been a target for West Ham for several months, but Chelsea is another possible next destination

    5

Chelsea were also engaged in active talks with Villa both in January and at the start of the summer and are desperate to sign a No.9 before the window closes.

The Blues are still trying hard to agree terms with Napoli and Victor Osimhen but Duran would appear a realistic alternative.

    Armando Broja

Broja’s move to Ipswich from Chelsea on loan with a £30m obligation if they stayed up was virtually done before a medical flagged up issues with his Achilles.

The Albanian international is still keen to leave Stamford Bridge after being one of the players stripped of their squad numbers and forced to train with the Under-23s.

Broja is part of Chelsea's 'bomb squad' and has been told he won't play this season unless he completes a move away

    5

talkSPORT has been told Everton have cooled their interest, but do not rule out a late bid from newly-promoted Leicester, who are in the hunt for more firepower.

Southampton also have a historical interest in Broja.

    James Ward-Prowse

It was only a year ago that West Ham paid Southampton £30m for their captain, but Ward-Prowse already appears to be surplus to requirements at the London Stadium.

Ward-Prowse is one of a number of players the Hammers are keen to offload along with Maxwell Cornet and Nayef Aguerd.

The England international is on decent money so a loan deal with West Ham contributing to that salary is the most likely scenario.

Interestingly, old club Saints have kept one domestic loan slot free by signing Aaron Ramsdale permanently and their boss Russell Martin is a huge Ward-Prowse advocate.

  • Newcastle identify two alternatives to Guehi as Crystal Palace hold out for £70m

Newcastle identify two alternatives to Guehi as Crystal Palace hold out for £70m

Newcastle are reportedly advancing with their contingency plans at centre-back having been knocked back multiple times for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

The Eagles have rejected several bids from the Magpies for England international Guehi as they hold out for £70million.

Newcastle have seen multiple bids turned down by Palace for Guehi this summer

Eddie Howe’s side recently had a club-record offer worth £60m plus £5m in add-ons knocked back by Palace.

And with Guehi’s centre-back partner Joachim Andersen on the brink of a move to Fulham, it could leave the south London club even less likely to part with the 24-year-old.

With time running out in the summer window, Newcastle have now stepped up their work on alternative options.

According to The Athletic, the Toon have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over Edmond Tapsoba and hold an interest in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

Tapsoba came close to a Premier League switch last season when he emerged as one of Tottenham’s main defensive targets.

However, Ange Postecoglou opted for Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven instead.

Tapsoba remained with Leverkusen and went on to play a pivotal role, making 46 appearances across all competitions as Xabi Alonso’s side went undefeated to win the Bundesliga as well as lifting the DFB-Pokal.

And the 25-year-old also scooped the German Super Cup last weekend after scoring the winning penalty in the shootout victory.

However, Newcastle may face competition for Tapsoba as the report claims several leading clubs are keeping tabs on the Burkina Faso international.

Meanwhile Disasi, who joined Chelsea from Monaco last season for £38m on a six-year contract, has also emerged as a possible option.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, the French international featured 44 times in all competitions for Chelsea.

However he missed all of the club’s pre-season action under new boss Enzo Maresca after undergoing a hernia operation.

Newcastle’s need for a new centre-back has reached a new level in the wake of their 1-0 win over Southampton last Saturday after Fabian Schar was sent off for headbutting Ben Brereton Diaz.

The BIGGEST questions for every Premier League team ahead of the new Premier League season

Schar’s red card also landed him a three-match suspension, leaving boss Eddie Howe light on options at centre-back as Sven Botman remains sidelined with a knee injury and won’t return until later this year.

Summer recruit Lloyd Kelly, who joined from Bournemouth on a free transfer, will likely replace Schar to slot in alongside Dan Burn in the heart of defence.

But it is believed that Newcastle are hoping to add someone with European pedigree.

Crystal Palace asking price revealed as Newcastle open talks with Marc Guehi

Newcastle have opened talks with Crystal Palace over a deal to sign Marc Guehi, talkSPORT understands.

The England defender has been linked with a number of top clubs this summer, including Arsenal, and the Magpies have now made their move.

    1

Guehi could be on his way to St James’ Park

However, the Eagles want at least £60million before they consider selling the highly-rated 24-year-old.

Palace signed Guehi from Chelsea for £18m in 2021, and has been ever-present since then, making 150 Premier League appearances over three seasons.

The centre-back has also become a starter for England, impressing on the nation’s run to the Euro 2024 final.

A move would make Guehi Newcastle’s fifth summer signing, joining fellow Blues academy graduate Lewis Hall, who recently made his loan move to the North East permanent in a £35million deal.

Meanwhile, Palace appear to have been prepared for the centre-back’s departure, bringing defender Chadi Riad to Selhurst Park from Barcelona for £12m plus £2m in add-ons earlier this summer.
